  2. Well, if you would, please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to Daniel chapter 4.

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  3. Daniel chapter 4.

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  4. If you're just visiting with us, if this is your first time, second time, third time, joining us for worship,

  5. you know, the type of preaching that we do here is called biblical exposition.

  6. And so typically how we do this is we walk through books of the Bible.

  7. And so if you're wondering why here on Mother's Day I'm preaching a sermon called Pride Mercifully Cut Down,

  8. I want you to know it doesn't have anything to do with your mom.

  9. All right?

  10. It's because last week we were in Daniel chapter 3.

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  11. And so this week we are in Daniel chapter 4.

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  12. When you found that, if you would, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's word.

  13. Daniel chapter 4.

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  14. King Nebuchadnezzar, to all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth,

  15. peace be multiplied to you.

  16. It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has done for me.

  17. How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders.

  18. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion endures from generation to generation.

  19. I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and prospering in my palace.

  20. I saw a dream that made me afraid.

  21. As I lay in bed, the fancies and the visions of my head alarmed me.

  22. So I made a decree that all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before me,

  23. that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.

  24. Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers came in,

  25. and I told them the dream, but they could not make known to me its interpretation.

  26. At last Daniel came in before me, he who was named Belshazzar after the name of my God,

  27. and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods.

  28. And I told him the dream, saying,

  29. O Belshazzar, chief of the magicians,

  30. because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you,

  31. and that no mystery is too difficult for you,

  32. tell me the visions of my head that I saw and their interpretation.

  33. The visions of my head as I lay in bed were these.

  34. I saw and behold a tree in the midst of all the earth,

  35. and its height was great.

  36. The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven,

  37. and it was visible to the end of the whole earth.

  38. Its leaves were beautiful, and its fruit abundant,

  39. and in it was food for all.

  40. The beasts of the field found shade under it,

  41. and the birds of the heavens lived in its branches,

  42. and all flesh was fed from it.

  43. I saw in the visions of my head as I lay in bed,

  44. and behold a watcher, a holy one, came down from heaven.

  45. He proclaimed aloud and said thus,

  46. Chop down the tree, and lop off its branches.

  47. Strip off its leaves, and scatter its fruit.

  48. Let the beasts flee from under it, and the birds from its branches,

  49. but leave the stump of its roots in the earth,

  50. bound with a band of iron and bronze,

  51. amid the tender grass of the field.

  52. Let him be wet with the dew of heaven.

  53. Let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth.

  54. Let his mind be changed from a man's,

  55. and let a beast's mind be given to him,

  56. and let seven periods of time pass over him.

  57. The sentence is by the decree of the watchers,

  58. the decision by the word of the holy ones,

  59. to the end that the living may know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men,

  60. and gives it to whom he will,

  61. and sets over it the lowliest of men.

  62. This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw,

  63. and you, O Belshazzar, tell me the interpretation,

  64. because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation,

  65. but you are able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.

  66. Then Daniel, whose name was Belshazzar, was dismayed for a while,

  67. and his thoughts alarmed him.

  68. The king answered and said,

  69. Belshazzar, let not the dream or the interpretation alarm you.

  70. Belshazzar answered and said,

  71. My lord, may the dream be for those who hate you,

  72. and its interpretation for your enemies.

  73. The tree you saw, which grew and became strong,

  74. so that its top reached to heaven,

  75. and it was visible to the end of the whole earth,

  76. whose leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant,

  77. and in which was food for all,

  78. under which beasts of the field found shade,

  79. and whose branches the birds of the heavens lived.

  80. It is you, O king,

  81. who have grown and become strong.

  82. Your greatness has grown and reaches to heaven,

  83. and your dominion to the ends of the earth.

  84. And because the king saw a watcher, a holy one,

  85. coming down from heaven and saying,

  86. Chop down the tree and destroy it,

  87. but leave the stump of its roots in the earth,

  88. bound with a band of iron and bronze,

  89. in the tender grass of the field,

  90. and let him be wet with the dew of heaven,

  91. and let his portion be with the beasts of the field,

  92. till seven periods of time pass over him.

  93. This is the interpretation, O king.

  94. It is a decree of the Most High God,

  95. which has come upon my lord the king,

  96. that you shall be driven from among men,

  97. and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field.

  98. You shall be made to eat grass like an ox,

  99. and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven,

  100. and seven periods of time shall pass over you,

  101. till you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men,

  102. and gives it to whom he will.

  103. And as it was commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree,

  104. your kingdom shall be confirmed for you,

  105. from the time that you know that heaven rules.

  106. Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you.

  107. Break off your sins by practicing righteousness,

  108. and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed,

  109. that there may be perhaps a lengthening of your prosperity.

  110. All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar.

  111. At the end of twelve months,

  112. he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon,

  113. and the king answered and said,

  114. Is not this great Babylon,

  115. which I have built by my mighty power,

  116. as a royal residence for the glory of my majesty?

  117. While the words were still in the king's mouth,

  118. there fell a voice from heaven.

  119. O king Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken.

  120. The kingdom has departed from you,

  121. and you shall be driven from among men,

  122. and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field,

  123. and you shall be made to eat grass like an ox,

  124. and seven periods of time shall pass over you,

  125. until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men,

  126. and gives it to whom he will.

  127. Immediately, the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar.

  128. He was driven from among men,

  129. and ate grass like an ox,

  130. and his body was wet with the dew of heaven,

  131. till his hair grew as long as eagle's feathers,

  132. and his nails were like bird's claws.

  133. At the end of the days,

  134. I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven,

  135. and my reason returned to me,

  136. and I blessed the Most High,

  137. and praised and honored him who lives forever.

  138. For his dominion is an everlasting dominion,

  139. and his kingdom endures from generation to generation.

  140. All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing,

  141. and he does according to his will among the hosts of heaven,

  142. and among the inhabitants of the earth.

  143. And none can stay his hand or say to him,

  144. What have you done?

  145. At the same time, my reason returned to me,

  146. and for the glory of my kingdom,

  147. my majesty and splendor returned to me.

  148. My counselors and my Lord sought me,

  149. and I was established in my kingdom,

  150. and still more greatness was added to me.

  151. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar,

  152. praise and extol and honor the King of heaven.

  153. For all his works are right,

  154. and his ways are just,

  155. and those who walk in pride,

  156. he is able to humble.

  157. This is God's holy, perfect word.

  158. Would you pray with me once more?

  159. Lord, we pray now as we open your word,

  160. would you speak to us through it?

  161. Would you show us what truth you would have us to learn from it this morning?

  162. Would you teach us?

  163. Would you humble us this morning?

  164. Would you lead us to Christ in honor and praise?

  165. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  166. Amen.

  167. You may be seated.

  168. Well, one of my favorite parts about being a pastor,

  169. and being your pastor,

  170. is that I get to hear all of your testimonies

  171. of how you came to faith in the Lord.

  172. I get to share my own testimony fairly often,

  173. and as a part of becoming a member of our local church here,

  174. I get to hear all of your testimonies.

  175. And for many of us, there's a common theme.

  176. Our story begins with us observing the work of God in someone else's life.

  177. We see, by our nearness to them,

  178. the work that God's doing in them.

  179. We observe something incredible that God's done in their life,

  180. but then all of a sudden, something starts to happen,

  181. and the Lord begins to work in us.

  182. And now all of a sudden, we begin to trust the Lord.

  183. And now all of a sudden, it's not just what God's doing for them,

  184. it's what God is doing to us.

  185. Our heart is changed.

  186. We begin to thank the Lord.

  187. We begin to praise the Lord.

  188. We begin to love the Lord.

  189. It moves from what God is doing for them to what God is now doing for me.

  190. As we come this morning to Daniel chapter 4,

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  191. it seems to me that that is what's happening here with Nebuchadnezzar.

  192. Now, through three chapters of Daniel,

  193. Nebuchadnezzar has seen the Lord work.

  194. He's been impressed with the way that Daniel has trusted God for wisdom.

  195. He's witnessed secondhand.

  196. He's witnessed the Lord save three men through the fire.

  197. But now, here in chapter 4, I think that a shift has taken place.

  198. In chapter 3, it ended with Nebuchadnezzar making a decree

  199. that no peoples, nations, and languages should ever speak a negative word

  200. against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  201. But now, here in chapter 4, King Nebuchadnezzar,

  202. he speaks to all peoples, nations, and languages again.

  203. But now, it's not in response to what God has done for someone else.

  204. Verse 2, it says that it has seemed good to me

  205. to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has done for me.

  206. Something has changed in Nebuchadnezzar.

  207. What we see here in chapter 4, I believe,

  208. is Nebuchadnezzar's personal testimony of God's work in his life.

  209. This is his personal testimony.

  210. It's not a pretty story.

  211. We're going to see that here in just a moment.

  212. But it is a beautiful story of God's mercy towards prideful sinners.

  213. This is a story of God's mercy towards prideful sinners like Nebuchadnezzar,

  214. prideful sinners like me,

  215. and prideful sinners like you.

  216. It's a story of pride mercifully cut down to the praise and glory of God.

  217. The big idea for us this morning here in Daniel chapter 4

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  218. is that God is merciful to save prideful sinners like us.

  219. That's the big idea.

  220. So we're going to see three acts of God's mercy towards the proud this morning.

  221. Daniel chapter 4.

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  222. If you're a note taker, if that helps you to follow along,

  223. we try to make it easy for you.

  224. So we're going to have three acts of God's mercy towards the proud this morning.

  225. First, first act of God's mercy towards the proud

  226. is that God mercifully reveals his sovereignty to the proud.

  227. God mercifully reveals his sovereignty.

  228. Look there to verse 4 with me.

  229. Here we find Nebuchadnezzar dreaming again.

  230. If you're getting deja vu,

  231. if you've been with us throughout the book of Daniel,

  232. this might sound familiar to you

  233. because we've been here before, haven't we?

  234. We're on familiar ground.

  235. Do you remember from Daniel chapter 2,

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  236. Nebuchadnezzar had this terrifying dream.

  237. He called in all the wise men of Babylon,

  238. all the sorcerers and the magicians and the Chaldeans,

  239. and the wisdom of Babylon.

  240. Was it successful?

  241. No, it failed.

  242. They were unable to tell him both the dream and its interpretation.

  243. That was Daniel chapter 2.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  244. And so he calls in Daniel,

  245. and Daniel was able by the wisdom of his God

  246. to reveal both the dream and its interpretation.

  247. Well, we don't know exactly how much time has passed

  248. between chapter 2 and here in chapter 4,

  249. but here we are again.

  250. And Nebuchadnezzar, again, is having a nightmare,

  251. a bad dream, and he wants to understand what he's seeing

  252. as he sleeps in his bed at night,

  253. and apparently this one caught him off guard.

  254. It came when he was least expecting it.

  255. He said that he was at ease in his house.

  256. He's prospering in his palace.

  257. He falls asleep, no doubt,

  258. his belly full and happy,

  259. and he's terrified by a vision and a dream.

  260. And so once again,

  261. he calls for the wise men of Babylon to come,

  262. and once again they fail.

  263. And so verse 8,

  264. he calls in Daniel,

  265. who he's renamed Belt-Shazar after the name of his God.

  266. Nebuchadnezzar tells him his dream,

  267. and he says in verse 10,

  268. the visions of my head as I lay in bed were these.

  269. He sees a great tree in the midst of all the earth.

  270. Its height was great.

  271. This tree grew and became strong.

  272. Its top reached up to the heavens.

  273. It was visible to the end of the whole earth.

  274. The leaves of the tree were beautiful.

  275. Its fruit was abundant,

  276. and it was food for all.

  277. The beasts of the field,

  278. they all came and found shade under the tree.

  279. And the birds of the heavens,

  280. they lived in its branches.

  281. All flesh was fed from this tree.

  282. This tree was an incredible,

  283. beautiful, life-giving,

  284. strong, fruitful tree.

  285. And you see,

  286. it kept growing and growing and growing,

  287. which of course,

  288. that seems like a good thing, doesn't it?

  289. That would mean more beauty,

  290. more provision,

  291. more life,

  292. more strength,

  293. more glory.

  294. That sounds like a good thing

  295. for this tree to grow.

  296. But then verse 13,

  297. he sees something else.

  298. He says,

  299. Behold, a watcher,

  300. a holy one,

  301. and we can understand this to be an angel,

  302. came and said,

  303. Chop down the tree

  304. and lop off its branches,

  305. strip off its leaves,

  306. scatter its fruit,

  307. let the beast flee out from under it,

  308. let the birds fly away from its branches.

  309. Why in the world would anybody do this

  310. to this great tree?

  311. All the environmentalists

  312. are quaking in their boots right now, right?

  313. Why in the world

  314. would we chop down this beautiful,

  315. strong,

  316. life-giving,

  317. fruitful tree?

  318. We'll see why in just a moment.

  319. But the watcher goes on

  320. with more to the vision.

  321. He says,

  322. But leave the stump of its roots

  323. in the earth,

  324. bound with a band of iron

  325. and bronze,

  326. leave it there amid the tender grass of the field,

  327. let him be wet with the dew of heaven,

  328. let his portion be with the beast

  329. in the grass of the earth,

  330. and let his mind be changed from a man's,

  331. and let a beast's mind be given to him,

  332. and let seven periods of time pass over him.

  333. Now it's clear at this point

  334. that we're not talking about a tree, right?

  335. This beautiful, strong, abundant,

  336. life-giving tree

  337. is really one person,

  338. him,

  339. who's going to be cut down.

  340. The tree is cut down in the vision,

  341. but that tree is symbolic of a person

  342. who will be cut down

  343. to the stump.

  344. Why?

  345. Well, here's the point of the dream.

  346. To the end,

  347. that the living may know

  348. that the Most High rules the kingdom of men

  349. and gives it to whom he will

  350. and sets over it the lowliest of men.

  351. You hear that?

  352. That's the point of this dream.

  353. Well, Daniel hears this dream

  354. and he's dismayed.

  355. It says he's alarmed

  356. and he tells Nebuchadnezzar

  357. that this tree in the dream

  358. is you, Nebuchadnezzar.

  359. Your greatness has grown.

  360. You've become strong,

  361. but Nebuchadnezzar,

  362. you are about to be chopped down

  363. to the stump.

  364. Again, verse 25,

  365. till you know

  366. that the Most High rules the kingdom of men

  367. and gives it to whom he will.

  368. All this is going to happen to you

  369. until you know, Nebuchadnezzar,

  370. that heaven rules.

  371. Now, we'll see the fulfillment

  372. of this dream in just a moment.

  373. But for now,

  374. we need to understand

  375. this big picture purpose of the vision.

  376. We need to understand

  377. the big picture message of the dream.

  378. This is God mercifully revealing

  379. his sovereignty to a prideful sinner.

  380. Do you see that?

  381. This is God mercifully revealing

  382. his sovereignty.

  383. Now, I realize that we've said that word,

  384. sovereignty.

  385. I haven't defined it yet for you.

  386. So, it's a Christian, theological,

  387. biblical word,

  388. but it's very simple in its meaning.

  389. Sovereignty simply means control.

  390. Sovereignty means God rules.

  391. If you're sovereign,

  392. you're the one in charge.

  393. If you're sovereign,

  394. you are in control.

  395. If you're sovereign,

  396. then you're the one that's ruling.

  397. So, to say that God is sovereign

  398. means God is in control.

  399. It means God is ruling.

  400. Kings of the earth,

  401. they have a limited geographical territory

  402. with a limited number of people

  403. under their charge,

  404. and their reign is for a limited amount of time.

  405. But God has total, complete,

  406. absolute sovereignty

  407. over everyone, everywhere,

  408. at all times, in all places.

  409. In fact, that's a lot of the point

  410. of the book of Daniel.

  411. It's to teach us

  412. that God is sovereign

  413. over all of human history.

  414. He raises up kings,

  415. and He sets them down.

  416. As kingdoms come,

  417. and as kingdoms go,

  418. the Lord is working out all things

  419. to usher in His perfect kingdom.

  420. And it works opposite

  421. as the way that the kingdoms

  422. of this world work, doesn't it?

  423. The kingdoms of this world,

  424. they grow big and strong,

  425. and eventually,

  426. they're cut down to the root.

  427. But the kingdom of God,

  428. what happens?

  429. It starts as small as a mustard seed,

  430. and it grows,

  431. and grows,

  432. and grows,

  433. and grows,

  434. until it's the greatest tree

  435. that covers the whole earth.

  436. To say that God is sovereign

  437. is to say that all peoples,

  438. all places,

  439. all kings,

  440. all nations,

  441. every minute of every day

  442. of your life and mine

  443. is under God's sovereign control,

  444. which means,

  445. Nebuchadnezzar,

  446. God is in charge,

  447. not you.

  448. Which means,

  449. you and me,

  450. God is in charge,

  451. not us.

  452. Here's what we need to understand.

  453. Understanding that God

  454. is totally sovereign,

  455. absolutely in control,

  456. is crucial to killing our pride.

  457. We have to get to that point

  458. of attributing absolute sovereignty

  459. to Him.

  460. Our pride,

  461. it wants to hold on

  462. to some level of control,

  463. to hold on to some sphere

  464. of influence,

  465. but God,

  466. He's merciful

  467. to strip everything away

  468. so that we see

  469. that we are not in control,

  470. but He is.

  471. Now,

  472. I wonder,

  473. how much sovereignty

  474. do you attribute

  475. to the Lord?

  476. Listen to what the Scriptures

  477. have to say.

  478. I just want to point you

  479. to just a few places.

  480. This is all over the Bible.

  481. I just want to show you

  482. just a few places

  483. that talk about

  484. God's sovereignty.

  485. Psalm 115,

    Psalms 115:3

  486. verse 3.

  487. It says,

  488. Our God is in the heavens.

  489. He does all that He pleases.

  490. You hear that?

  491. That's sovereignty.

  492. If you get to do

  493. whatever you want to do,

  494. you are sovereign.

  495. Now,

  496. we want to act like that,

  497. don't we?

  498. When we try to do

  499. all that we please,

  500. is that good or bad?

  501. Normally,

  502. that doesn't work out

  503. so well for us.

  504. That's sinful for us,

  505. but that's sovereignty for God.

  506. Our God is in the heavens.

  507. He does whatever He wants.

  508. Isaiah 46,

    Isaiah 46:9

  509. verses 9 and 10.

  510. We've already seen in Daniel,

  511. God has planned out

  512. all of human history

  513. from beginning to end.

  514. Isaiah 46,

    Isaiah 46:9

  515. verses 9 and 10.

  516. He says,

  517. I am God,

  518. and there is none like me,

  519. declaring the end

  520. from the beginning,

  521. and from ancient times

  522. things not yet done,

  523. saying,

  524. My counsel shall stand,

  525. and I will accomplish

  526. all my purpose.

  527. You know,

  528. there's only one way

  529. that you can declare

  530. the end from the beginning,

  531. is if you know

  532. what the end's going to be,

  533. but He says,

  534. He doesn't just leave it at that.

  535. He says,

  536. I'm going to accomplish

  537. everything I want to do

  538. in the meantime.

  539. He's not just looking

  540. to see how the end's

  541. going to play out.

  542. He doesn't just write

  543. the last page of the book,

  544. read the last page of the book.

  545. God writes all of human history

  546. to accomplish all His purposes.

  547. And then in the pages of Scripture,

  548. He tells us how it's going to play out.

  549. He's sovereign

  550. over all of human history.

  551. Revelation chapter 4,

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  552. it tells us,

  553. You created all things,

  554. and by Your will

  555. they existed

  556. and were created.

  557. He's sovereign in creation.

  558. Paul says in Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:11

  559. chapter 1 verse 11,

  560. He works all things

  561. according to the counsel

  562. of His will.

  563. All things.

  564. Which means He's sovereign

  565. in providence

  566. and the working out

  567. of our daily lives

  568. within His own sphere

  569. of creation.

  570. He's sovereign in creation.

  571. He's sovereign in providence.

  572. He's sovereign in salvation.

  573. 2 Timothy 1 verse 9,

    2 Timothy 1:9

  574. God saved us

  575. and called us

  576. to a holy calling,

  577. not because of our works,

  578. but because of His own purpose

  579. and grace,

  580. which He gave us

  581. in Jesus Christ

  582. when,

  583. when,

  584. before the ages began.

  585. He's sovereign in creation

  586. and providence

  587. and salvation.

  588. He's sovereign over every

  589. roll of the dice

  590. in every board game

  591. you play with your kids,

  592. Mom.

  593. Proverbs 16 verse 33,

    Proverbs 16:33

  594. The lot is cast into the lap,

  595. but as every decision

  596. is from the Lord.

  597. The point is,

  598. God is totally,

  599. completely,

  600. absolutely,

  601. without limit,

  602. universally

  603. sovereign.

  604. Which means

  605. He's sovereign over you.

  606. He's sovereign over me.

  607. He's sovereign over

  608. your family.

  609. He's sovereign over

  610. your struggle,

  611. whatever that may be

  612. this morning.

  613. He's sovereign over your job.

  614. He's sovereign over your sickness.

  615. He's sovereign over your,

  616. your prosperity

  617. and your wellness.

  618. He's sovereign

  619. over everything.

  620. We have to get this message.

  621. And it's an easy one,

  622. it's an easy one

  623. for prideful people

  624. to just shut out of our minds.

  625. Because again,

  626. prideful people

  627. want control.

  628. We want to contribute

  629. in some way

  630. to our salvation.

  631. We want to control

  632. and be in charge

  633. of our life.

  634. We want to manage

  635. our own little sphere

  636. of influence.

  637. And this is my kingdom.

  638. This is my life.

  639. This is what I have control

  640. of right here.

  641. Church,

  642. listen to me.

  643. Until we realize

  644. that God is in control,

  645. not you,

  646. you will be proud

  647. when things go well

  648. and you will be devastated

  649. when things fall apart.

  650. The message of God's sovereignty

  651. is good news for us

  652. because ultimately

  653. it means it's not about us.

  654. Has he shown you

  655. that you are not sovereign?

  656. That he is.

  657. God reveals this

  658. to Nebuchadnezzar here

  659. as an act of divine mercy.

  660. God is merciful

  661. to show us

  662. that prideful sinners

  663. like us

  664. are not in control.

  665. He is.

  666. Not only this,

  667. second,

  668. second act of God's mercy

  669. towards prideful people

  670. like us

  671. is that God

  672. mercifully rebukes

  673. our sin.

  674. God mercifully

  675. rebukes

  676. our sin.

  677. In light of God's

  678. revealed plan here

  679. through this dream,

  680. Daniel's counsel

  681. to Nebuchadnezzar

  682. was pretty clear,

  683. wasn't it?

  684. Pretty bold, too,

  685. to say this to the king.

  686. Verse 27

  687. says,

  688. Therefore, O king,

  689. let my counsel

  690. be acceptable to you.

  691. Break off your sins

  692. by practicing righteousness

  693. and your iniquities

  694. by showing mercy

  695. to the oppressed

  696. that there may perhaps

  697. be a lengthening

  698. of your prosperity.

  699. In other words,

  700. king,

  701. repent.

  702. Repent of your pride.

  703. Humble yourself.

  704. Stop basking

  705. in your greatness.

  706. Be merciful to others.

  707. Give some of your greatness

  708. away to the oppressed.

  709. Give to the poor.

  710. Break off your sins

  711. and practice righteousness.

  712. Why?

  713. Because you're not as great

  714. as you think you are.

  715. Yeah,

  716. the meaning of the dream

  717. was clear.

  718. I think Daniel's counsel

  719. was clear.

  720. But apparently,

  721. the message

  722. didn't stick.

  723. And the fact is,

  724. our pride is not easily killed,

  725. is it?

  726. It runs deep within us.

  727. You would have thought

  728. that by this point,

  729. after seeing all that he's seen,

  730. Nebuchadnezzar might have

  731. gotten the message by now,

  732. but it's clear that he didn't.

  733. It's not a problem

  734. with the clarity

  735. of the message.

  736. It's a problem

  737. with the hardness

  738. of Nebuchadnezzar's heart.

  739. I read a story

  740. this week

  741. from Sinclair Ferguson.

  742. He told a story

  743. about the Welsh evangelist

  744. John Elias.

  745. And he said that

  746. there was a time

  747. when the local blacksmith

  748. bought a new dog.

  749. And shortly afterwards,

  750. when Elias visited

  751. the blacksmith's shop,

  752. the dog could be heard

  753. just barking

  754. and barking

  755. and barking

  756. fiercely

  757. as the blacksmith's hammer

  758. beat down on the metal.

  759. As often as he

  760. whacked that hammer

  761. down to the anvil,

  762. that dog would be barking.

  763. Well,

  764. as time went on,

  765. the hammering continued,

  766. but the barking

  767. got quieter

  768. and quieter,

  769. less frequent,

  770. less often

  771. until one day

  772. Elias looked

  773. inside the shop.

  774. He saw the blacksmith

  775. hammering away

  776. at the anvil

  777. and there was the dog

  778. by his side

  779. asleep by the fire.

  780. He had grown numb

  781. to the hammering

  782. on the anvil.

  783. In a similar way here,

  784. Nebuchadnezzar,

  785. he's heard the banging

  786. of this truth before,

  787. hasn't he?

  788. He's come face to face

  789. with God's power

  790. and God's might

  791. and God's sovereignty

  792. and God's goodness

  793. over and over

  794. and over and over

  795. again,

  796. but he's grown numb

  797. to it.

  798. He's asleep by the fire,

  799. so to speak.

  800. He says he's at ease

  801. in his palace,

  802. he's comfortable

  803. in his prosperity,

  804. but all of that

  805. is about to change

  806. because as you probably

  807. know,

  808. if God wants to get

  809. your attention,

  810. he's going to do it.

  811. The easy way

  812. or the hard way?

  813. Nebuchadnezzar chooses

  814. the hard way here.

  815. So verse 28,

  816. it says,

  817. all this came upon

  818. King Nebuchadnezzar.

  819. At the end of 12 months,

  820. he was walking on the roof

  821. of the royal palace

  822. of Babylon

  823. and it says that he said,

  824. is not this great Babylon

  825. which I have built

  826. by my mighty power

  827. as a royal residence

  828. for the glory

  829. of my majesty.

  830. You hear how humble he is?

  831. This is after the dream.

  832. Can you believe this?

  833. He looks out

  834. and admires his kingdom

  835. which no doubt

  836. was very impressive,

  837. right,

  838. by all accounts,

  839. historical accounts

  840. of the ancient city

  841. of Babylon.

  842. It was very impressive.

  843. Nebuchadnezzar,

  844. he did play a large role

  845. in the building

  846. and the greatness

  847. of this city.

  848. The records show

  849. that he rebuilt

  850. 12 temples

  851. he finished

  852. the construction

  853. of the great city wall.

  854. He built this royal palace

  855. that he was walking

  856. on the roof of

  857. and attached

  858. to the royal palace

  859. was the hanging gardens

  860. of Babylon,

  861. right,

  862. which if you've heard

  863. of that,

  864. that's one of the

  865. seven wonders,

  866. great wonders

  867. of the ancient world.

  868. He was incredibly

  869. accomplished

  870. and he knew it.

  871. And I want to say,

  872. too,

  873. that there's nothing

  874. wrong whatsoever

  875. with accomplishing

  876. great things.

  877. There's nothing wrong

  878. with putting your skill

  879. and your mind

  880. and your labor

  881. to work

  882. and accomplishing

  883. great things

  884. and achieving

  885. great goals,

  886. but it makes

  887. all the difference

  888. in the world

  889. who it's for

  890. and who gets

  891. the credit.

  892. Listen again

  893. to what Nebuchadnezzar

  894. said.

  895. He said,

  896. I built this

  897. by my power

  898. for my glory.

  899. You hear that?

  900. Verse 31,

  901. it says that

  902. while these words

  903. were still in his mouth,

  904. he heard a voice.

  905. King Nebuchadnezzar,

  906. to you it is spoken,

  907. the kingdom has departed

  908. from you.

  909. You shall be driven

  910. from among men.

  911. Your dwelling shall be

  912. with the beasts

  913. of the field.

  914. You shall eat grass

  915. like an ox

  916. and seven periods

  917. of time shall pass

  918. over you

  919. until you know

  920. that the Most High

  921. rules the kingdom

  922. of men

  923. and gives it

  924. to whom

  925. he will.

  926. Immediately,

  927. it says,

  928. the word was fulfilled

  929. against Nebuchadnezzar.

  930. Can you imagine?

  931. One minute,

  932. he's standing

  933. on his palace

  934. and he's looking

  935. out over his kingdom.

  936. He's boasting

  937. in all this great

  938. accomplishment,

  939. great achievements,

  940. patting himself

  941. on the back,

  942. thinking about

  943. all that he's done

  944. and the next moment

  945. he's an animal

  946. out in the field

  947. eating grass

  948. like an ox.

  949. His body's wet

  950. with the water

  951. and the dew.

  952. His hair grows out

  953. as long as eagle's feathers.

  954. His nails

  955. are like bird's claws

  956. and Ferguson,

  957. again,

  958. he says,

  959. he becomes externally

  960. what he's proven

  961. himself to be

  962. internally.

  963. A beast.

  964. For seven periods

  965. of time,

  966. all of it

  967. was stripped

  968. away.

  969. And we don't know

  970. how long

  971. those seven periods

  972. of time are.

  973. Days,

  974. minutes,

  975. weeks,

  976. months,

  977. years.

  978. We're not told

  979. how to measure

  980. those seven periods

  981. of time.

  982. I think it's more

  983. likely than not

  984. that Daniel's

  985. showing us

  986. with seven

  987. being the number

  988. of perfection

  989. and completion

  990. that whatever

  991. the actual amount

  992. of time was,

  993. it was just

  994. the right amount

  995. of time

  996. prescribed by

  997. a sovereign God

  998. until this king

  999. got it.

  1000. Until he knew

  1001. that the Most High

  1002. rules the kingdom

  1003. of men.

  1004. Now just think

  1005. about how humiliating

  1006. this must have been

  1007. for King Nebuchadnezzar.

  1008. The king has been

  1009. reduced to an animal.

  1010. Today,

  1011. doctors would

  1012. diagnose this

  1013. as clinical

  1014. lycanthropy.

  1015. Have you ever

  1016. heard of this?

  1017. It's an actual,

  1018. I'm not joking,

  1019. it's a medical

  1020. condition.

1021. You can look it up.

  1022. It's a mental

  1023. illness where

  1024. an individual,

  1025. he genuinely

  1026. believes that

  1027. they have

  1028. transformed

  1029. into an animal.

  1030. Sometimes it's

  1031. long lasting,

  1032. sometimes it's

  1033. short periods

  1034. of just mental

  1035. illness.

  1036. There are all

  1037. sorts of medical

  1038. cases.

  1039. You can go home

  1040. and read.

  1041. They understand

  1042. it to be an

  1043. extremely rare

  1044. form of psychosis

  1045. and it is

  1046. fascinating.

  1047. But you just

  1048. imagine the

  1049. king.

  1050. You would never

  1051. imagine the

  1052. king to be

  1053. reduced to that

  1054. level of

  1055. sickness and

  1056. weakness and

  1057. humility.

  1058. One who's

  1059. mentally and

  1060. physically impressive,

  1061. who's accomplished

  1062. all sorts of

  1063. incredible feats

  1064. during his reign.

  1065. All of a sudden

  1066. he's stripped

  1067. down to

  1068. nothing.

  1069. driven out in

  1070. the fields to

  1071. go eat grass

  1072. like an

  1073. animal.

  1074. If I didn't

  1075. know any

  1076. better, I

  1077. would say that

  1078. this looks like

  1079. judgment,

  1080. doesn't it?

  1081. How in the

  1082. world can this

  1083. be merciful?

  1084. We say this is

  1085. the Lord

  1086. mercifully rebuking

  1087. Nebuchadnezzar's

  1088. sin.

  1089. How in the

  1090. world is this

  1091. an act of

  1092. God's mercy?

  1093. Well, there's

  1094. one word there

  1095. that gives us

  1096. hope.

  1097. You see it?

  1098. That word

  1099. until.

  1100. All this will

  1101. come upon you.

  1102. All this will

  1103. happen until

  1104. you know that

  1105. God is king.

  1106. That God

  1107. rules.

  1108. This may look

  1109. on the surface

  1110. like judgment,

  1111. but if the end

  1112. purpose, if the

  1113. purpose of this

  1114. condition is

  1115. redemptive, then

  1116. it is mercy,

  1117. even if it

  1118. hurts.

  1119. Of course, God

  1120. does judge

  1121. pride.

  1122. We're going

  1123. to see this

  1124. more clearly

  1125. next week with

  1126. the story of

  1127. Belshazzar.

  1128. He's well

  1129. within his

  1130. rights to

  1131. judge pride.

  1132. God does

  1133. not owe

  1134. anybody an

  1135. until.

  1136. Do you

  1137. understand me?

  1138. God does

  1139. not owe

  1140. anybody one

  1141. more minute to

  1142. repent of their

  1143. pride.

  1144. God does

  1145. not owe

  1146. anybody

  1147. patience.

  1148. He doesn't

  1149. owe anybody

  1150. seven periods

  1151. of time until

  1152. they get it.

  1153. God does

  1154. not owe

  1155. anyone tomorrow

  1156. to repent of

  1157. your sin.

  1158. God doesn't

  1159. owe anyone

  1160. warning after

  1161. warning after

  1162. warning after

  1163. warning.

  1164. He doesn't

  1165. have to give

  1166. us an

  1167. until, but

  1168. here, in

  1169. his heart of

  1170. mercy, he

  1171. does.

  1172. As sovereign

  1173. king of the

  1174. universe, he

  1175. chooses to

  1176. show mercy to

  1177. Nebuchadnezzar by

  1178. rebuking his

  1179. pride until he

  1180. humbles himself

  1181. and honors the

  1182. Lord.

  1183. Now, I wonder

  1184. if this seems

  1185. like mercy to

  1186. you.

  1187. to be driven

  1188. away from your

  1189. comforts, to

  1190. be cut down to

  1191. the stump,

  1192. right?

  1193. That might seem

  1194. harsh to you,

  1195. but I want you

  1196. to listen because

  1197. we need to

  1198. understand that

  1199. our pride is

  1200. like a cancerous

  1201. growth in our

  1202. heart.

  1203. If we keep

  1204. it, it will

  1205. kill you.

  1206. it may be

  1207. today, it may

  1208. be tomorrow, it

  1209. may be ten

  1210. years from now, I

  1211. don't know when, but

  1212. if we are

  1213. harboring this

  1214. sickness of pride in

  1215. our heart, it

  1216. will kill you.

  1217. God is

  1218. merciful to

  1219. serve as a

  1220. surgeon and cut

  1221. us open and cut

  1222. that out of our

  1223. hearts.

  1224. As painful as that

  1225. might be, it's

  1226. mercy for the

  1227. Lord to remove it

  1228. from us now, while

  1229. there's still time to

  1230. repent, than for us

  1231. to wait and be

  1232. prideful until the

  1233. return of the

  1234. Lord when we will

  1235. be humbled, without

  1236. the opportunity to

  1237. repent.

  1238. Church, I would

  1239. rather the Lord cut

  1240. away every temporary

  1241. comfort, every

  1242. temporary pleasure,

  1243. every temporary

  1244. accomplishment, every

1245. source of pride in my

  1246. life right now, that

  1247. I might humble

  1248. myself before Him

  1249. now, than for Him

  1250. to enact judgment

  1251. by letting us sleep

  1252. by the fire.

  1253. And be

  1254. temporarily

  1255. comfortable,

  1256. temporarily happy,

  1257. temporarily rich,

  1258. temporarily proud on

  1259. our way to eternal

  1260. judgment.

  1261. Friend, which would

  1262. you prefer?

  1263. We're called to

  1264. humble yourselves

  1265. before the Lord, and

  1266. He will exalt you.

1267. Maybe in this life, but

  1268. certainly at the

  1269. return of our Lord.

  1270. God is merciful to

  1271. show us His

  1272. sovereignty, to teach

  1273. us that He's in

  1274. control, not us, and

  1275. God is merciful to

  1276. strip us of our

  1277. pride, cut away our

  1278. sin.

  1279. And third, finally,

  1280. ultimately, God is

  1281. merciful to redeem

  1282. our soul.

1283. It's the third act of

  1284. God's mercy here with

  1285. Nebuchadnezzar.

  1286. God mercifully

  1287. redeems His soul.

  1288. Look here to verse

  1289. 34.

  1290. Nebuchadnezzar, we

  1291. see he endures this

  1292. discipline.

  1293. Everything is taken

  1294. out from him.

  1295. But verse 34 says,

1296. at the end of the

  1297. days, I, Nebuchadnezzar,

  1298. lifted my eyes to

  1299. heaven, and my reason

  1300. returned to me.

  1301. And I blessed the

  1302. Most High and praised

  1303. and honored Him who

  1304. lives forever.

  1305. Now, you might be

  1306. surprised to hear there

  1307. is disagreement here,

  1308. right, with Christian

  1309. scholars and those who

  1310. interpret this passage

  1311. over whether or not

  1312. Nebuchadnezzar was

  1313. actually truly converted.

1314. And I guess on the one

  1315. hand, right, it's

  1316. probably impossible to

  1317. know for sure.

  1318. He's given some lip

  1319. service to the Lord

  1320. before.

1321. But in my opinion, I

  1322. think something just

  1323. seems different here,

  1324. don't you?

  1325. And again, this whole

  1326. chapter is Nebuchadnezzar

  1327. taking the initiative to

  1328. share with the whole

1329. world what God has done

  1330. for him.

1331. And look what he says

  1332. here.

  1333. He personally praises the

  1334. Lord.

  1335. He realizes that finally,

1336. finally he sees that his

1337. reign is limited, but for

1338. the Lord, his dominion is

  1339. an everlasting dominion.

  1340. He recognizes that

  1341. Nebuchadnezzar, his reign

1342. will come to an end, but

1343. for the Lord, his kingdom

  1344. endures from all

  1345. generations to all

  1346. generations.

1347. He realizes that for all

  1348. his greatness, for all

  1349. his accomplishments, even

  1350. the greatest, most

  1351. accomplished on the earth

  1352. are nothing compared to

  1353. the Lord.

  1354. All the inhabitants of

  1355. the earth are accounted

1356. as nothing, he says in

  1357. verse 35.

1358. He praises the Lord for

  1359. his unstoppable sovereign

  1360. will.

1361. He does according to his

1362. will among the host of

  1363. heaven.

  1364. And among the inhabitants

1365. of the earth, and none

1366. can stay his hand or say

1367. to him, what have you

  1368. done?

1369. He says in verse 36 that

1370. at the same time when he

1371. finally got it, when he

1372. looked up and lifted his

1373. eyes to heaven to honor the

1374. Lord and to give glory to

1375. the God of heaven, he says

1376. my reason returned to me.

1377. And for the glory of my

1378. kingdom, my majesty and my

  1379. splendor returned to me.

  1380. My counselors, my lords

  1381. returned to me.

  1382. They sought me.

1383. I was established in my

  1384. kingdom and still more

1385. greatness was added to me.

1386. The tree began to grow

  1387. again.

  1388. But there was one

  1389. difference.

  1390. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar,

1391. praise and extol and honor

  1392. the king of heaven.

1393. For all his works are

1394. right and all his ways are

  1395. just.

1396. And take it from me, those

1397. who walk in pride, he is

  1398. able to humble.

1399. Church, I could be wrong, but

  1400. I've heard a lot of

  1401. testimonies.

  1402. This sounds like the

1403. testimony of a believer to

  1404. me.

1405. And I wonder as we read

1406. these words, friend, do you

1407. have a testimony like this?

1408. Maybe not so dramatic, maybe

1409. you've never risen so high or

1410. fallen so low, but I wonder

1411. as we read this chapter and

1412. consider the work of God.

1413. Has the Lord worked in your

1414. life to humble your pride?

1415. Has the Lord worked in your

1416. heart to strip away every

1417. ounce of me, me, me, me,

1418. my control, my life, my work,

1419. my effort, my achievement, my

  1420. accomplishment.

1421. Has he stripped that away from

  1422. you yet?

1423. So that you look to him as your

  1424. only hope?

1425. It may be that you don't have a

1426. testimony of God's work in your

  1427. life at all.

1428. You may still be proud, you may

1429. still be clinging on to something

1430. that you think you have to offer

  1431. God.

1432. Maybe you still think you have

1433. something to contribute to your

1434. salvation in some way, your

  1435. works, your effort, your

  1436. riches, your upbringing, whatever

  1437. it may be.

1438. If that's you, I want you to hear

1439. the voice of Daniel again.

  1440. Break off your sins.

  1441. Repent of your pride.

1442. Or better yet, hear the words of

  1443. Jesus, friend.

1444. Repent and believe the gospel.

1445. The good news of the gospel of

1446. Jesus Christ is that we have

1447. absolutely nothing to bring to the

  1448. table.

1449. It doesn't sound like good news,

  1450. does it?

1451. It starts with the bad news that

1452. all we have to offer the Lord is

1453. our sin that requires salvation.

1454. All we have to bring to the table is

1455. our darkness and our debt and our

  1456. rebellion.

1457. You got nothing good to offer him.

1458. But the true king, the only one who

1459. truly can boast in how perfect and

1460. how glorious and how great he is,

1461. the true king who created all

1462. things, who built the world and

1463. reigns and rules over everyone and

1464. everything and now all places

  1465. everywhere.

1466. The true king took the form of a

1467. servant and humbled himself to die in

  1468. our place.

1469. So that prideful sinners like us might

  1470. receive salvation.

1471. Not because of anything you've done.

1472. Not because of anything you've built in

  1473. your life.

1474. Not because of anything you've

  1475. accomplished or accumulated.

1476. You receive what he has done by God's

1477. grace through simple faith in the

  1478. true king, Jesus Christ.

1479. Have you come to the place where you've

1480. repented of your pride and cast

1481. yourself wholly on the work of Jesus

  1482. Christ alone?

  1483. Have you done that?

1484. Has God done that in you?

1485. And we sing a song.

  1486. Jesus paid it all.

1487. All to him I owe.

1488. My sin, my sin has left a crimson stain.

1489. He washed it white as snow.

1490. Friend, what do we have to boast in?

  1491. What have we received?

1492. What have we earned that we have not

  1493. received?

1494. Friend, repent and believe the gospel.

1495. And Christian, Christian, don't be fooled to

1496. think that that repentance ends the moment

  1497. you come to Christ.

1498. That lingering sickness of pride is alive

1499. and well in every one of our hearts.

1500. Beware of the temptation to pride in

  1501. your life right now.

1502. Where do we need to repent?

1503. Where do we need to humble ourselves?

1504. A prideful Christian is an oxymoron.

1505. Those two things don't belong together.

1506. If we understand the grace of God,

1507. if we understand the work of Christ,

1508. why should we be proud?

1509. It may be true of us that we have nothing

1510. to boast in but what Christ Jesus has done

1511. for us and what he does in us and through us,

1512. not for our sake but for his glory.

1513. And the testimony of every Christian in the

  1514. room is this.

1515. I was dead in my trespasses and sins in which

  1516. I once walked.

  1517. Spiritually dead.

  1518. Totally dead.

1519. All I could do was be dead.

1520. But God, by his mercy, by his grace,

1521. made me alive with Christ.

  1522. That's your story, Christian.

1523. I wonder, when's the last time you stopped

1524. and reflected on how God saved you?

1525. If you're a believer in the room,

1526. when's the last time that you stopped

1527. and just really gave time to think

  1528. about your testimony?

1529. And I would challenge you just by way of

  1530. application this week,

1531. as you leave from this place,

1532. as you reflect on what God's done here

  1533. in Daniel chapter 4,

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

1534. as you reflect on what God's done in your life,

  1535. I would challenge you,

1536. even just write it down.

1537. Put pen to paper this week.

1538. Write down the story of how God saved you.

1539. And I'm not talking about something cool

1540. God's done in your life.

1541. It's something interesting you see God doing

  1542. in somebody else.

1543. I'm talking specifically about the testimony

1544. of how God has humbled your pride

1545. and given you faith in Jesus Christ.

1546. Would you think on that this week?

1547. And then application number two,

1548. as you reflect on what God's done for you,

  1549. would you share it?

1550. These things aren't meant to be kept

1551. close to the chest, church.

1552. If God has done a work in your life

  1553. to save your soul,

1554. that's meant to be shouted

  1555. from the rooftops,

1556. to be shared with our family,

1557. to be shared with our friends,

1558. to be shared with our neighbors,

1559. to be shared with our coworkers,

1560. to be shared with that random person

1561. in line with you at the checkout aisle.

1562. Let's be like King Nebuchadnezzar

  1563. and say,

1564. it seemed good to me,

1565. all nations, peoples, and languages,

  1566. to share with you

1567. what God has done for me.

1568. We're going to conclude our time this morning

  1569. as we always do,

1570. singing a song of response.

1571. And as we do, again,

1572. I want you to consider the words

1573. that we're going to sing.

1574. And I want you to ask yourself again,

1575. is this true of me?

  1576. And if it's not,

  1577. as you sing,

1578. would you pray and ask the Lord,

1579. would you make it true of me?

1580. When I survey the wondrous cross

1581. on which the Prince of Glory died,

1582. my richest gain I count but loss,

1583. and pour contempt on all my pride.

  1584. Forbid it, Lord,

  1585. that I should boast,

1586. save in the death of Christ my God.

1587. All the vain things that charm me most,

1588. I sacrifice them to His blood.

1589. Were the whole realm of nature mine,

1590. if I owned it all,

  1591. if I had everything I needed,

  1592. everything I wanted,

1593. were the whole realm of nature mine,

1594. that were a present far too small.

  1595. Love so amazing,

  1596. so divine,

  1597. demands my soul,

  1598. my life,

  1599. my all.

1600. Is that true of you?

  1601. Let's pray.

  1602. Father,

1603. make it true of us.

1604. Make it true of us.

1605. For those who have not yet bowed the knee

  1606. to King Jesus,

1607. would you work your grace in our heart

  1608. now this moment

  1609. to humble us,

1610. that we might trust fully,

  1611. cast ourselves fully

1612. on the finished work of Jesus.

1613. And for those who you've done that work

  1614. in our lives,

  1615. Lord,

1616. we pray that we would rejoice

  1617. in what you've done,

1618. that you would continue to kill

1619. the pride in our heart,

  1620. that we would boast

1621. in the cross of Christ,

  1622. that we would share

1623. the good news of the gospel

  1624. with those around us.

1625. To the praise of your glorious name,

1626. we ask this in Jesus' name.

  1627. Amen.

  1628. Amen.

  1629. Amen.

  1630. Amen.

  1631. Amen.

  1632. Amen.

  1633. Amen.

  1634. Amen.

  1635. Amen.

  1636. Amen.

  1637. Amen.

  1638. Amen.
