  1. Well, good morning. It is my great privilege this morning to open God's holy word with you and be able to preach this morning.

  2. You know, we're in a transition week for the last six weeks we've been in Daniel.

  3. We're at a good point in Daniel to put a pause on it.

  4. We're heading into the Psalms. We will preach out of the book of Psalms during the summer.

  5. But this transition week allows me the opportunity to preach from whatever passage I want to preach from.

  6. You know how it is. You tend to go where your passions are.

  7. And that's exactly what I looked at this week.

  8. And I would say this. My passion is this.

  9. Is that I deeply desire to live for Christ.

  10. I deeply desire to be committed to him, to be surrendered to him, to know him more,

  11. to be more intimate in my relationship with him.

  12. That is very real for me.

  13. And so I look at the scripture.

  14. You know, there's a bunch of passages that say that.

  15. And so it was a little bit hard to land on a passage.

  16. But this morning we will look at Romans 6, the whole chapter of Romans 6.

  17. And we'll look at it as an overview of what's said in chapter 6 of Romans.

  18. Romans 6.

  19. And I just acknowledge before you that God's powerful word is my prayer that it speaks to our hearts this morning.

  20. And that it spurs us to live for him.

  21. So if you would, if you're able, I would ask that you would stand with me this morning

  22. as we read from the book of Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  23. And we will read again the whole chapter.

  24. So read with me.

  25. Hopefully you've got the Bible in hand in some form so that you can read along with us.

  26. And as we look at it this morning, I will ask you to turn back many times and look at certain verses.

  27. So I encourage you to keep it open this morning.

  28. Chapter 6, verse 1.

  29. And what shall we say then?

  30. Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

  31. By no means.

  32. How can we who died to sin still live in it?

  33. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

  34. We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death in order that,

  35. just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father,

  36. we too might walk in newness of life.

  37. For if we have been united with him in a death like his,

  38. we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

  39. We know that our old self was crucified with him

  40. in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing

  41. so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

  42. For one who has died has been set free from sin.

  43. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

  44. We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again.

  45. Death no longer has dominion over him.

  46. For the death he died, he died to sin once for all.

  47. But the life he lives, he lives to God.

  48. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

  49. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body to make you obey its passions.

  50. Do not present your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness,

  51. but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life

  52. and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.

  53. For sin will have no dominion over you since you are not under the law but under grace.

  54. What then?

  55. Are we to sin because we are not under the law but under grace?

  56. It's by no means.

  57. Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves,

  58. you are slaves of the one whom you obey,

  59. either of sin, which leads to death,

  60. or of obedience, which leads to righteousness.

  61. But thanks be to God that you were once slaves to sin.

  62. I'll say that again.

  63. I missed a word.

  64. But thanks be to God that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart

  65. to the standard of teaching to which you were committed.

  66. And having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

  67. I'm speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations.

  68. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness,

  69. leading to more lawlessness,

  70. so now present your members as slaves to righteousness,

  71. leading to sanctification.

  72. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.

  73. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed?

  74. For the end of those things is death.

  75. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God,

  76. the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.

  77. For the wages of sin is death.

  78. But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  79. Let's pray.

  80. Father, how powerful your word is.

  81. The truths here are amazing to me, Father,

  82. that you've done an amazing work in each of our lives,

  83. those of us who are born again who know you as Lord and Savior.

  84. God, I pray that whatever words would come from me this morning, Father,

  85. they would just fly away and not land anywhere.

  86. But Father, I pray that your word would cement itself deep in our hearts this morning.

  87. And I pray this in the name of Jesus.

  88. Amen.

  89. Amen.

  90. Y'all can have a seat.

  91. As Paul speaks to the Roman church,

  92. I just want to remind us he's speaking to Christians.

  93. And Paul has spent five chapters talking about this thing, this topic,

  94. justification by faith alone.

  95. And now as we step into chapter 6, it transitions.

  96. And he asks a question that I think is needful for us to ask as well.

  97. And here's the question that Paul would ask and ask of them.

  98. Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

  99. Christian, Roman Christian,

  100. are we to continue in sin in order that we would cause the grace to rise?

  101. How would you answer that?

  102. It doesn't seem right that we would even consider walking in sin, does it?

  103. Yes, Christians, as those who have been made aware of our sin,

  104. you know, as part of the process of coming to Christ,

  105. we became aware of the sinfulness in our life

  106. and the need for reconciliation,

  107. the need for redemption,

  108. the need for forgiveness.

  109. How is it that when God showed us how ugly our sin was

  110. and how our sin separates us from a holy God,

  111. why is it that we would continue in it?

  112. Why would we continue to live in sinful ways?

  113. Why would we allow it a place in our life?

  114. And so Paul here addresses this question.

  115. Should we sin more

  116. in order that the grace of God would be elevated,

  117. his forgiveness would be elevated?

  118. And Paul says this,

  119. by no means.

  120. By no means.

  121. You know, I would ask this question of us,

  122. do we struggle at times with sin?

  123. Are we even drawn to it?

  124. Are we even drawn by our culture or by our flesh?

  125. Are we drawn to walk in sin?

  126. Do we know sins that are in our life that are habitual?

  127. Are there things that we've allowed to reside in our lives

  128. that we know should not be there as Christians?

  129. And Paul shares these truths with him.

  130. This morning, I want us to focus on three words

  131. out of this text.

  132. Here are the three words.

  133. Know, consider, and present.

  134. These three words.

  135. To know, consider, and present.

  136. And we see those words here in the text.

  137. In this first word, to know,

  138. it's interesting how Paul makes his case

  139. in answering this question about sin.

  140. Should we, Christian, continue in sin?

  141. No, no, no, he would say.

  142. By no means should we continue in sin.

  143. It's not compatible with who we now are.

  144. As Christians.

  145. It makes no sense that we would walk in sin

  146. and allow sin to reside in our lives.

  147. And so Paul makes this statement.

  148. He actually asks a question,

  149. then he makes a statement.

  150. How can we who died to sin still live in it?

  151. Do you not know, Christian?

  152. Do you not know?

  153. Know what, Paul?

  154. He's about to share with us

  155. these five things,

  156. these five items,

  157. these five truths

  158. that he is about to share

  159. in reference to this word know.

  160. Christian, do you not know

  161. that you were baptized into Christ?

  162. Do you see it?

  163. In verse three,

  164. do you not know

  165. that all of us

  166. who were baptized into Christ

  167. were baptized into his death?

  168. Christian, do you not know

  169. that you were baptized into the Christ?

  170. What does that mean

  171. to be baptized into Christ?

  172. Well, one thing it might mean

  173. is that when someone comes to faith

  174. in this body of believers,

  175. then we'll put a pool,

  176. we'll just call it a pool,

  177. outside,

  178. we'll fill it with water

  179. and we will baptize a new believer.

  180. And when we baptize them,

  181. what we're doing is,

  182. in a sense,

  183. we're symbolically saying

  184. that that person,

  185. as he goes under the water,

  186. dies.

  187. And he's buried under the water

  188. and then when we're bringing back

  189. out of the water,

  190. then he is raised in newness of life.

  191. Now, that phraseology

  192. would come from this very text.

  193. The concept of being baptized into Christ

  194. is this concept

  195. that we're baptized into communion

  196. with Jesus.

  197. We're baptized into fellowship

  198. with Jesus.

  199. We're baptized into relationship

  200. with Christ.

  201. And so Paul says,

  202. do you not realize

  203. that you're now in Christ?

  204. Do you not realize

  205. what has happened,

  206. what has transacted in your life?

  207. Do you not realize now

  208. that you're a part of Christ?

  209. That you're in communion with Christ?

  210. He goes on to say this,

  211. do you not know,

  212. and that's number one,

  213. do you not know you've been baptized?

  214. Number two,

  215. do you not know that you died?

  216. Now, we would understand

  217. that he's not saying,

  218. do you not realize

  219. that you died physically?

  220. That's not what Paul's saying.

  221. He's speaking to the church.

  222. But he's saying,

  223. do you not realize

  224. that you have died,

  225. past tense,

  226. done act?

  227. For those of y'all

  228. who understand

  229. the tenses of the verbs

  230. in the original language,

  231. the tense of the verb here

  232. is an aoris tense,

  233. meaning it's not something

  234. that continues on,

  235. it's something that was done,

  236. it's a one-time act

  237. that was accomplished

  238. and finalized.

  239. Do you not realize,

  240. Christian,

  241. that you died?

  242. What is he saying?

  243. What is Paul saying?

  244. Well, we get a glimpse of it

  245. if we look into verse 5.

  246. And he says this,

  247. we know that our old self

  248. was crucified.

  249. So in what way,

  250. Paul,

  251. did we die?

  252. Well,

  253. it's the guy we were before

  254. who has died.

  255. What guy?

  256. The guy who was enslaved to sin.

  257. The guy who couldn't do anything

  258. but sin.

  259. And we see that truth

  260. again at the end of verse 6.

  261. We know that our old self

  262. was crucified with him

  263. in order that the body of sin

  264. might be brought to nothing

  265. so that we would no longer

  266. be enslaved to sin.

  267. Do you catch that?

  268. We would no longer be.

  269. You know what it implies?

  270. That there was a time

  271. when we were enslaved to sin.

  272. You know what it means

  273. to be enslaved?

  274. That means you can't do anything else.

  275. If you're enslaved to something,

  276. that's what you do.

  277. If we glance ahead at verse 17,

  278. Paul makes this statement,

  279. you who were once slaves of sin.

  280. Verse 20,

  281. you were slaves of sin.

  282. Do we see ourselves like that?

  283. Christian?

  284. Christian?

  285. Do you understand

  286. that there was a time in your life

  287. before you came into the kingdom

  288. where you were absolutely enslaved to sin?

  289. every act,

  290. every thought

  291. was self-focused and not righteous.

  292. God says when he views sin,

  293. anything that's not righteous is sin.

  294. And as an unbeliever,

  295. we are not able to do one righteous act.

  296. Romans 3 declares

  297. there's none righteous,

  298. no, not one.

  299. And so Paul is declaring

  300. that that man,

  301. that old self,

  302. the guy we once were,

  303. died.

  304. Now it's a beautiful picture

  305. in the book of Ezekiel

  306. about the changed person that we are.

  307. In Ezekiel,

  308. and I won't read the whole context,

  309. I'm just going to read this verse.

  310. Y'all will recognize this verse.

  311. God's saying,

  312. I will give you a new heart

  313. and a new spirit

  314. I will put within you.

  315. I will give you a new heart

  316. and a new spirit

  317. I will put within you.

  318. When,

  319. God,

  320. will you do that?

  321. Here's when.

  322. When we recognize our sin,

  323. our separation from a holy God,

  324. our need for salvation,

  325. our recognition that Jesus died

  326. in our place on the cross.

  327. When we accept that truth by faith,

  328. we embrace it with all of our being

  329. that we have no hope

  330. apart from the resurrection,

  331. the life, death, burial,

  332. and resurrection of Jesus.

  333. Apart from what Jesus did on the cross,

  334. on our behalf,

  335. in our place,

  336. we would have no hope.

  337. And by faith,

  338. we embrace that truth.

  339. And when we do,

  340. the word of God says,

  341. you will be changed.

  342. That I will put my spirit within you

  343. and you will be a different person.

  344. The desires you used to have,

  345. you will no longer have.

  346. Those temptations,

  347. you will still be subjected to,

  348. but the heart is different.

  349. Christian,

  350. is that true for you?

  351. Do you recognize

  352. that there's different desires

  353. within your heart?

  354. You know,

  355. there's a time in my life

  356. that I walked in sin

  357. in such a way

  358. that it didn't bother me.

  359. Some of the things I did

  360. didn't bother me.

  361. You know those same things

  362. now bother me?

  363. There's conviction that happens.

  364. The Holy Spirit whispers in my heart,

  365. in my spirit,

  366. He says,

  367. no, no, no, no, no.

  368. Don't walk that way.

  369. That's not the way to honor God.

  370. That's not the way

  371. I want you to live.

  372. You'll never experience

  373. my joy

  374. and my peace

  375. and my contentment

  376. and my love.

  377. You'll never experience that

  378. if you walk in those sinful ways

  379. because those sinful ways

  380. separate you

  381. from the joy

  382. that I desire

  383. to fill you with.

  384. I don't want you

  385. walking like that anymore.

  386. And you know,

  387. our heart,

  388. our new heart

  389. desires different things.

  390. Is that true for y'all?

  391. Do you acknowledge

  392. that you're a different person?

  393. Do you see things

  394. happen in your life, Frank?

  395. I remember you saying

  396. in Sunday school

  397. how I'm not the same guy I was.

  398. There's something amazing

  399. that has changed in my life.

  400. God has given me a desire.

  401. He's changed the way

  402. I interact with people.

  403. You know why?

  404. It's because your old man died.

  405. Your old man was crucified.

  406. In a sense,

  407. your old man,

  408. the person you were,

  409. was crucified

  410. on the cross with Jesus.

  411. There's a link

  412. between our new life

  413. and Jesus

  414. that's inseparable.

  415. And Paul says here

  416. this second truth.

  417. We've been baptized

  418. into Christ.

  419. We have died.

  420. The old man has died.

  421. And we go on

  422. and we look.

  423. It says,

  424. Do you not know

  425. that all of us

  426. who've been baptized

  427. into Christ

  428. were baptized

  429. into his death?

  430. We were buried

  431. therefore with them

  432. by baptism

  433. into death

  434. in order that

  435. just as Jesus

  436. was raised from the dead

  437. by the glory of the Father,

  438. we too might walk

  439. in newness of life.

  440. Do you hear

  441. the identification

  442. of the believer

  443. with Jesus?

  444. We know

  445. as we've studied

  446. scripture

  447. that Jesus lived

  448. a godly,

  449. holy,

  450. sinless life.

  451. And he willingly

  452. went to the cross

  453. as a criminal

  454. in the eyes of Herod

  455. in the Jewish nation.

  456. He was elevated

  457. on a cross.

  458. He was crucified,

  459. dead.

  460. He was buried

  461. in the tomb

  462. of Joseph

  463. of Arimathea.

  464. And on the third day

  465. what happened?

  466. The stone was rolled away.

  467. Jesus was resurrected

  468. no longer

  469. to fight

  470. the flesh.

  471. No longer

  472. to be tempted

  473. by the flesh

  474. into this newness

  475. of life.

  476. Died,

  477. he was buried,

  478. he was resurrected.

  479. Do you know

  480. that Paul

  481. is saying

  482. that we

  483. have been

  484. identified

  485. with Christ

  486. in this very way?

  487. He's saying

  488. that you have died,

  489. this old man

  490. has died,

  491. the old person

  492. you were

  493. has been buried

  494. and the new person

  495. you are

  496. has been raised

  497. to newness

  498. of life.

  499. Look at it.

  500. Verse 4,

  501. just as Christ

  502. was raised

  503. from the dead

  504. by the glory

  505. of the Father,

  506. we too might walk

  507. in newness

  508. of life.

  509. You know

  510. we're no longer

  511. slaves to sin?

  512. do you realize

  513. who you are?

  514. Do you realize

  515. who you were?

  516. Let me just

  517. flip over

  518. to Ephesians,

  519. Paul speaking

  520. to the church

  521. at Ephesus.

  522. I want you

  523. to hear

  524. who we were

  525. and I wonder

  526. if you embrace

  527. this truth.

  528. Do you know

  529. Christian

  530. who you were?

  531. Do you know

  532. Christian

  533. who you are?

  534. That's so

  535. important

  536. in order

  537. to live

  538. in a godly way.

  539. Listen to the words

  540. of chapter 2

  541. in Ephesians

  542. that says this.

  543. He's speaking

  544. to Christians

  545. in Ephesus

  546. and he says

  547. you Christian

  548. were dead

  549. in the trespasses

  550. and sins

  551. in which

  552. you once

  553. walked.

  554. following

  555. the course

  556. of this

  557. world.

  558. You hear

  559. what he's

  560. saying?

  561. Christian

  562. you used

  563. to walk

  564. just like

  565. the worldly

  566. ones.

  567. You used

  568. to walk

  569. or live

  570. in a worldly

  571. way.

  572. You used

  573. to live

  574. for worldly

  575. pleasures.

  576. That's who

  577. you were

  578. and he goes

  579. on to say

  580. this.

  581. Following

  582. the prince

  583. of the power

  584. of the air.

  585. Who is that?

  586. Satan.

  587. Christian

  588. you used

  589. to live

  590. like the world

  591. in a worldly

  592. way.

  593. You used

  594. to honor

  595. and follow

  596. Satan

  597. as your

  598. leader.

  599. As the

  600. one who

  601. moved you

  602. to chase

  603. after worldly

  604. things.

  605. Following

  606. the prince

  607. of the power

  608. of the air

  609. the spirit

  610. that is now

  611. at work

  612. in the sons

  613. of disobedience

  614. among whom

  615. we all once

  616. lived

  617. in the passions

  618. of our flesh.

  619. Christian

  620. do you realize

  621. that's who

  622. you were?

  623. have you

  624. yet embraced

  625. the depth

  626. of our

  627. sinfulness?

  628. Have we

  629. recognized

  630. who we

  631. were that

  632. we were

  633. enemies

  634. of God?

  635. We were

  636. following

  637. the ways

  638. of Satan.

  639. We were

  640. walking

  641. in worldliness.

  642. That's who

  643. we were.

  644. That is

  645. the old

  646. man.

  647. For every

  648. single one

  649. of us.

  650. He goes

  651. on to say

  652. this.

  653. Carrying

  654. out the

  655. desires

  656. of the

  657. body

  658. and the

  659. mind

  660. and were

  661. by nature

  662. children

  663. of wrath.

  664. What do

  665. you mean

  666. children

  667. of wrath?

  668. We were

  669. in rebellion

  670. against a

  671. holy God.

  672. In a sense

  673. we were

  674. saying I

  675. don't care

  676. what you

  677. think.

  678. I don't

  679. care who

  680. you are.

  681. I don't

  682. believe in

  683. you at

  684. all.

  685. I'm

  686. living how

  687. I want

  688. to live

  689. and I

  690. could

  691. care

  692. less

  693. who

  694. you

  695. are.

  696. Now

  697. some

  698. of us

  699. went to

  700. church

  701. and some

  702. of us

  703. had a

  704. religious

  705. bent

  706. but do

  707. you realize

  708. they're still

  709. in the

  710. heart of

  711. hearts

  712. the old

  713. man

  714. desires

  715. to

  716. satisfy

  717. and

  718. please

  719. and

  720. gratify

  721. self.

  722. We might

  723. put on

  724. this image

  725. that says

  726. yes I'm

  727. a religious

  728. person.

  729. I'll just

  730. share about

  731. me is that

  732. I grew up

  733. going to

  734. church

  735. and from

  736. the time

  737. I was

  738. born I

  739. don't ever

  740. remember a

  741. time when I

  742. wasn't

  743. regularly

  744. attending

  745. church.

  746. I go to

  747. college and

  748. I find a

  749. church.

  750. I regularly

  751. attend

  752. church but

  753. it wasn't

  754. until I

  755. finished

  756. college at

  757. 22 years

  758. old that

  759. I realized

  760. I was

  761. in trouble.

  762. That I

  763. realized I

  764. was separated

  765. from a

  766. holy God.

  767. That I

  768. realized that

  769. I still

  770. don't know

  771. the depth

  772. of my

  773. sin but

  774. I saw

  775. it in

  776. a way

  777. that I

  778. was shocked.

  779. I thought

  780. I was a

  781. moral good

  782. guy and

  783. God says

  784. your morality

  785. that you

  786. so trust

  787. in you

  788. look

  789. underneath

  790. it and

  791. what you'll

  792. find behind

  793. it is

  794. a motive

  795. that is

  796. pointed right

  797. back to

  798. you.

  799. You want

  800. people to

  801. clap for

  802. you.

  803. You want

  804. people to

  805. applaud.

  806. You want

  807. people to

  808. pat you

  809. on the

  810. back.

  811. You want

  812. to impress.

  813. Do you

  814. see Treg

  815. how sinful

  816. that is?

  817. Do you

  818. see how

  819. ugly that

  820. is in

  821. my eyes?

  822. Do you

  823. see that

  824. all your

  825. motives are

  826. underneath

  827. this umbrella

  828. of pride?

  829. You think

  830. you're good.

  831. You think

  832. that you

  833. honor me.

  834. You think

  835. that you're

  836. doing spiritual

  837. righteous

  838. things.

  839. You're

  840. not.

  841. Because

  842. everything

  843. you're

  844. doing is

  845. pride-filled

  846. self-filled

  847. and it

  848. doesn't do

  849. anything for

  850. my kingdom.

  851. You know

  852. in an

  853. interest

  854. in a

  855. moral

  856. person

  857. thinks

  858. that

  859. they're

  860. in

  861. right

  862. standing

  863. with

  864. God

  865. I'm

  866. good.

  867. Some

  868. would

  869. say

  870. I'm

  871. okay.

  872. God

  873. will

  874. surely

  875. let

  876. a

  877. good

  878. person

  879. into

  880. his

  881. kingdom.

  882. We

  883. don't

  884. have

  885. the

  886. eyes

  887. of

  888. God.

  889. He

  890. sees

  891. through

  892. what

  893. we

  894. think

  895. is

  896. goodness

  897. and

  898. he

  899. looks

  900. at

  901. the

  902. motive.

  903. He

  904. looks

  905. at

  906. the

  907. heart

  908. and

  909. he

  910. sees

  911. sin,

  912. sin,

  913. sin,

  914. sin,

  915. sin,

  916. sin.

  917. You know

  918. what he

  919. sees?

  920. This

  921. person

  922. enslaved

  923. to sin.

  924. Like

  925. Paul

  926. is sharing

  927. with the

  928. Ephesians

  929. that we

  930. in truth

  931. were

  932. enemies

  933. of God.

  934. But

  935. now I

  936. ask you

  937. who are

  938. you now?

  939. Who

  940. are you

  941. now?

  942. Have

  943. you

  944. experienced

  945. the life

  946. change

  947. that God

  948. gives

  949. when we

  950. bow our

  951. knee,

  952. when we

  953. accept

  954. him by

  955. faith,

  956. when we

  957. say I

  958. see who

  959. I am.

  960. I see

  961. now my

  962. sinfulness

  963. away I

  964. never

  965. knew

  966. before.

  967. God

  968. thank you

  969. that you

  970. would

  971. open my

  972. eyes,

  973. but now

  974. I see

  975. I'm in

  976. trouble.

  977. I

  978. entrust

  979. myself

  980. to you.

  981. I

  982. entrust

  983. myself

  984. to the

  985. work of

  986. Jesus

  987. in my

  988. place,

  989. his

  990. substitutionary

  991. death

  992. for me.

  993. I see

  994. the gift

  995. that you

  996. offer,

  997. and I

  998. reach out

  999. to you

  1000. and say,

  1001. God,

  1002. I'm not

  1003. worthy,

  1004. I don't

  1005. deserve

  1006. any of

  1007. it,

  1008. but by

  1009. your

  1010. grace

  1011. would you

  1012. love me,

  1013. would you

  1014. forgive

  1015. me,

  1016. would you

  1017. change

  1018. me,

  1019. would you

  1020. be my

  1021. God,

  1022. would you

  1023. be my

  1024. king?

  1025. Who were

  1026. we?

  1027. Sinners

  1028. separated from

  1029. the holy

  1030. God.

  1031. Who are

  1032. we?

  1033. Those

  1034. whose lives

  1035. have been

  1036. transformed.

  1037. We actually

  1038. have died,

  1039. we've been

  1040. buried,

  1041. and we've

  1042. been raised

  1043. to walk

  1044. in newness

  1045. of life.

  1046. What does

  1047. that look

  1048. like?

  1049. we go

  1050. back to

  1051. Paul's

  1052. question.

  1053. Are we

  1054. to continue

  1055. in sin

  1056. that grace

  1057. may abound?

  1058. What?

  1059. What are

  1060. you talking

  1061. about?

  1062. Who would

  1063. even think

  1064. that it

  1065. would be

  1066. okay to

  1067. walk in

  1068. a sinful

  1069. way before

  1070. a holy

  1071. God who's

  1072. forgiven us

  1073. a debt

  1074. that we

  1075. couldn't

  1076. repay?

  1077. Who's

  1078. given us

  1079. life,

  1080. who's

  1081. made us

  1082. a son,

  1083. who's

  1084. caused us

  1085. to be

  1086. an heir

  1087. of his

  1088. kingdom?

  1089. Who's

  1090. listen,

  1091. church,

  1092. do you

  1093. understand,

  1094. do we

  1095. understand

  1096. that we're

  1097. children of

  1098. light?

  1099. We're

  1100. children of

  1101. the king.

  1102. We've

  1103. been adopted

  1104. into the

  1105. family of

  1106. God.

  1107. We've

  1108. been forgiven

  1109. completely.

  1110. We've

  1111. been given

  1112. a hope

  1113. of heaven.

  1114. There's a

  1115. place for

  1116. us in

  1117. heaven.

  1118. Christ

  1119. is going

  1120. to prepare.

  1121. He will

  1122. return,

  1123. and when

  1124. he returns,

  1125. he will

  1126. take us

  1127. to that

  1128. place as

  1129. the bride.

  1130. he's

  1131. purifying.

  1132. We're

  1133. now this

  1134. person that's

  1135. no longer

  1136. enslaved.

  1137. The old

  1138. man was

  1139. enslaved,

  1140. but when

  1141. the Holy

  1142. Spirit came

  1143. to live in

  1144. our life,

  1145. you know

  1146. what happened

  1147. is he

  1148. transformed

  1149. who we

  1150. are.

  1151. He put

  1152. a new

  1153. spirit

  1154. within

  1155. us.

  1156. And that

  1157. new spirit

  1158. doesn't

  1159. desire to

  1160. pursue sin

  1161. anymore.

  1162. the new

  1163. spirit

  1164. desires to

  1165. honor and

  1166. worship God.

  1167. We see

  1168. him in a

  1169. growing way,

  1170. his holiness.

  1171. I love

  1172. what Moses

  1173. said.

  1174. Show me

  1175. your glory.

  1176. Show me

  1177. your glory,

  1178. God.

  1179. You know

  1180. what he

  1181. said?

  1182. He said,

  1183. you can't

  1184. see all

  1185. my glory.

  1186. I'm glad

  1187. that you

  1188. desire to

  1189. see my

  1190. glory,

  1191. but you

  1192. don't

  1193. understand the

  1194. greatness of

  1195. my glory.

  1196. But I

  1197. will allow

  1198. just a

  1199. remnant of

  1200. my glory to

  1201. pass by and

  1202. allow you to

  1203. see it.

  1204. And the

  1205. effect on

  1206. his life

  1207. was dramatic.

  1208. So we

  1209. follow the

  1210. train of

  1211. thinking that

  1212. Paul is

  1213. sharing here.

  1214. He says,

  1215. don't you

  1216. know,

  1217. don't you

  1218. recognize who

  1219. you now

  1220. are?

  1221. And he

  1222. says this,

  1223. if we look

  1224. down in

  1225. verse 11,

  1226. verse 10.

  1227. You know,

  1228. I can't do

  1229. that.

  1230. I'm going to

  1231. have to go

  1232. back to

  1233. nine.

  1234. We know

  1235. that Christ

  1236. being raised

  1237. from the dead

  1238. will never

  1239. die again.

  1240. Death no

  1241. longer has

  1242. dominion over

  1243. him.

  1244. Do you

  1245. know that,

  1246. Christian?

  1247. It's done.

  1248. He conquered

  1249. the grave.

  1250. He conquered

  1251. the devil.

  1252. He conquered

  1253. sin.

  1254. He conquered

  1255. death.

  1256. It's done.

  1257. He is a

  1258. conquering king.

  1259. It says,

  1260. for the death

  1261. he died,

  1262. he died to

  1263. sin.

  1264. He died,

  1265. why?

  1266. Because he

  1267. took on our

  1268. sin.

  1269. And he

  1270. carried it

  1271. to the

  1272. cross,

  1273. and he

  1274. died in

  1275. our place.

  1276. That that

  1277. sin would

  1278. not be

  1279. counted on

  1280. our account.

  1281. And it

  1282. goes on,

  1283. the death

  1284. he died,

  1285. he died to

  1286. sin once for

  1287. all,

  1288. but the

  1289. life he

  1290. lives,

  1291. he lives

  1292. to God.

  1293. So you

  1294. also must

  1295. consider,

  1296. Christian,

  1297. you must

  1298. consider

  1299. yourselves

  1300. dead to

  1301. sin.

  1302. and alive

  1303. to God

  1304. in Christ

  1305. Jesus.

  1306. So the

  1307. first word

  1308. we talked

  1309. about is

  1310. to know.

  1311. Do you

  1312. know who

  1313. you were?

  1314. Do you

  1315. know who

  1316. you are?

  1317. The second

  1318. word to

  1319. consider this

  1320. morning is

  1321. this word

  1322. consider.

  1323. Consider.

  1324. What does

  1325. it mean to

  1326. consider?

  1327. Paul says,

  1328. do you

  1329. know who

  1330. you are?

  1331. And then

  1332. he's saying,

  1333. consider

  1334. these things.

  1335. Let me

  1336. just share

  1337. an illustration

  1338. if I can.

  1339. Some of

  1340. y'all might

  1341. know that

  1342. I used

  1343. to play

  1344. golf.

  1345. I don't

  1346. know if

  1347. he would

  1348. call it

  1349. golf anymore,

  1350. but I'll

  1351. try to

  1352. still play.

  1353. But in

  1354. the earlier

  1355. days when

  1356. I was

  1357. young and

  1358. I was

  1359. chasing

  1360. that dream

  1361. of playing

  1362. golf

  1363. professionally

  1364. one day,

  1365. that I

  1366. would spend

  1367. hours upon

  1368. hours upon

  1369. hours practicing

  1370. chipping,

  1371. practicing

  1372. putting,

  1373. getting on

  1374. the range

  1375. and just

  1376. hitting ball

  1377. after ball,

  1378. playing as

  1379. often as

  1380. much as I

  1381. could in

  1382. order to

  1383. get to the

  1384. place where

  1385. I'd be good

  1386. enough.

  1387. On occasion,

  1388. I would

  1389. often go to

  1390. tournaments,

  1391. but on

  1392. occasion I

  1393. would be in

  1394. a tournament

  1395. and I would

  1396. play horribly.

  1397. And I'm like,

  1398. what is going

  1399. on?

  1400. That's something.

  1401. I ought to be

  1402. able to show

  1403. up and just

  1404. play consistently

  1405. every time I'm

  1406. out, but

  1407. sometimes I would

  1408. show up and I

  1409. would play and

  1410. the ball's just

  1411. flying left and

  1412. it's flying right.

  1413. I'm hitting the

  1414. ground when I'm

  1415. trying to chip.

  1416. I'm like, what in

  1417. the world is going

  1418. on?

  1419. And I get

  1420. home and you

  1421. know if you're

  1422. like me and

  1423. you play tournament

  1424. golf, these

  1425. things just spin

  1426. around in your

  1427. head.

  1428. And so I get

  1429. home and I'm

  1430. like, what in

  1431. the world?

  1432. Good grief.

  1433. I'm going over

  1434. my swing.

  1435. I'm saying, how

  1436. did it happen?

  1437. And I'm thinking

  1438. about, wait a

  1439. minute, okay, my

  1440. arm's got to be

  1441. straight.

  1442. I've got to go

  1443. back.

  1444. I've got to put

  1445. my weight here.

  1446. And I'm thinking

  1447. about all these

  1448. little factors in

  1449. the golf game are

  1450. important.

  1451. I'm saying, okay,

  1452. here, I've got to

  1453. go.

  1454. Oh, that's

  1455. what I wasn't

  1456. doing.

  1457. I was letting

  1458. that knee move.

  1459. Well, of course I

  1460. was going

  1461. everywhere.

  1462. I knew how to

  1463. do it.

  1464. I had trained my

  1465. body how to play

  1466. golf.

  1467. I played at a

  1468. high level of

  1469. golf.

  1470. But that day, I

  1471. wasn't playing

  1472. well.

  1473. There was a

  1474. reason.

  1475. I had to bring

1476. all of that up to

  1477. the forefront of

  1478. my mind and say,

  1479. oh, yeah, that's

  1480. why I didn't play

  1481. good.

  1482. I had to

  1483. consider what it

  1484. might have been.

  1485. I had to bring

  1486. the truths.

  1487. To me, they were

  1488. so seeded in my

  1489. life and my golf

  1490. game that I didn't

1491. think about a lot of

  1492. these basics anymore.

1493. I just went out and

  1494. just played.

  1495. But every now and

1496. I have to bring the

  1497. basics back and

  1498. remind myself what

  1499. the basics are.

  1500. Christian, you know

  1501. that that's important

  1502. as we live for

  1503. Christ, that we

  1504. have to take every

  1505. thought captive to

  1506. the obedience of

  1507. Christ?

  1508. Do you know that

  1509. we have to remind

  1510. ourselves who we

  1511. are?

  1512. When temptation

  1513. flies at us and

  1514. we are tempted to

  1515. think, oh, man,

  1516. that would be great.

1517. You know, if I go

  1518. do that, oh, man,

1519. it's going to be so

  1520. fun.

  1521. I think if I could

  1522. just do that, it's

  1523. oh, we're enticed

  1524. by sin.

  1525. And sometimes we

  1526. forget who we are.

  1527. Why would we, who

  1528. have died to sin,

1529. why would we go out

  1530. and participate in

  1531. it?

  1532. It makes no sense.

  1533. And in those

  1534. moments when the

  1535. temptation comes, or

  1536. in those moments when

  1537. our flesh is stirring

  1538. and wanting to do

  1539. something for self,

  1540. we have to remind

  1541. ourselves, no, no,

  1542. that doesn't make

  1543. any sense.

  1544. the old man died.

  1545. The guy who wanted

  1546. to sin died.

  1547. God, forgive me for

  1548. even contemplating

  1549. that.

  1550. You've called me to

  1551. live for your

  1552. kingdom and to seek

  1553. your righteousness.

  1554. God, forgive me.

  1555. Give me strength to

  1556. say no.

  1557. You know there's no

  1558. sin such as common

  1559. to man, according to

  1560. Corinthians, where God

1561. has not given us a

  1562. way of escape.

1563. Do you know that God

1564. always gives us a way

1565. of escape, even in the

  1566. most difficult of

  1567. temptations?

  1568. Sometimes we just have

  1569. to remember who we

  1570. are.

1571. We have to consider the

  1572. basics.

  1573. No, that's not me.

  1574. That's not who I am.

  1575. I'm a son of God.

  1576. I'm an ambassador of

  1577. his kingdom.

  1578. I'm a saint.

  1579. Let me ask this,

  1580. church.

  1581. Do you see

  1582. yourselves as saints or

1583. do you see yourselves as

  1584. a sinner?

1585. You know, I ask that

  1586. question to many people

  1587. and they say, I'm a

  1588. sinner.

  1589. I've got sin that

  1590. happens on a regular

  1591. basis.

  1592. I mean, I just find

  1593. myself failing and

  1594. failing and failing and

  1595. failing again.

1596. They say, I know the

  1597. Bible says I'm a saint,

  1598. but I don't feel like a

  1599. saint.

1600. Because I trip up all

  1601. the time.

1602. These things that I do,

1603. let me just clarify for

  1604. us, church.

  1605. You're not a sinner.

1606. The essence of who you

  1607. were was a sinner.

1608. The old man was a

  1609. sinner.

  1610. The old man was

  1611. enslaved to sin.

  1612. That guy died.

  1613. You're not a sinner

  1614. anymore.

  1615. You know what?

  1616. You're a saint.

  1617. You're in Christ.

  1618. You're born again.

  1619. You bought with his

  1620. blood.

  1621. You're changed.

1622. Inside of you is a

  1623. desire to honor and

  1624. worship God.

  1625. Do you know it?

  1626. Do you experience it?

  1627. Does it move you?

1628. Does God give you this

1629. desire to live for him?

  1630. Christian, I sure hope

  1631. that's true.

  1632. Doctrinally speaking,

  1633. it's absolutely true

  1634. because you've been

  1635. raised in union with

  1636. Christ.

  1637. You've been united with

  1638. Christ.

  1639. You've been baptized.

  1640. You've died.

  1641. You've been buried.

  1642. You've been resurrected

  1643. in Christ.

  1644. You've been given a new

  1645. heart by God.

  1646. And that new heart

  1647. genuinely desires to

1648. honor him and serve him

  1649. and worship him and

  1650. enjoy him.

  1651. You're not a sinner.

  1652. You're a saint.

1653. Now let me just say

  1654. this.

  1655. Saints sometimes sin.

1656. Is that true for you?

  1657. Yeah.

1658. Well how do we deal

  1659. with this thing?

  1660. How do we deal

  1661. with this plague?

  1662. This constant barrage

  1663. from Satan and the

  1664. dark kingdom,

  1665. from the worldly

1666. ways, the ways of our

  1667. world, from the fleshly

  1668. cravings of our body.

1669. How do we deal with

  1670. those things?

  1671. Here's how you deal

  1672. with it.

1673. Look with me in verse

  1674. 12.

  1675. Starting in verse 12.

1676. This is our third word.

  1677. Present.

  1678. Verse 12.

  1679. Let not sin therefore

  1680. reign in your mortal

  1681. body.

  1682. I'll talk about that

1683. word reign in just a

  1684. minute.

1685. Let not sin reign in

  1686. your mortal body to

  1687. make you obey its

  1688. passions.

  1689. Do you hear that?

  1690. There's an influence

  1691. that's pressing itself

1692. in your life that wants

  1693. you to obey that

  1694. influence.

  1695. let it not happen.

1696. Let not sin reign in

  1697. your mortal body that

  1698. you would obey its

  1699. passion.

  1700. Rather do this.

  1701. Do not present your

  1702. members to sin as

  1703. instruments of

  1704. unrighteousness but

  1705. present yourselves to

1706. God as those who have

  1707. been brought from death

  1708. to life and your

  1709. members to God.

  1710. Present yourselves to

  1711. God.

  1712. Present your members to

  1713. God.

  1714. Christian.

  1715. Know who you are.

  1716. Know what has changed

  1717. in your life.

1718. Know that you walk in

  1719. newness of life.

1720. And consider it in the

  1721. moment when these

  1722. passions, these urges,

  1723. these outward forces

1724. come at you to entice

  1725. you into sin.

1726. To entice you to walk

  1727. after the world and

  1728. after the enemy.

  1729. Consider in those

  1730. moments who you are

  1731. and resist it.

  1732. Don't present yourselves

1733. to sin to live that

  1734. way.

1735. The word of God says

  1736. present yourselves to

  1737. God.

  1738. Present your members to

  1739. God.

1740. What does that look like?

  1741. Church?

1742. How do you present your

  1743. members to God?

  1744. Here's my hand, God.

  1745. I don't want to do

  1746. anything that's going to

  1747. offend you or that's

  1748. going to be self-motivated,

  1749. that's going to be

  1750. self-seeking.

  1751. I don't want to do any

  1752. of that.

  1753. God, I don't want to

  1754. look at anything that

  1755. would bring dishonor to

  1756. your kingdom.

  1757. I don't want to look at

  1758. anything that's going to

  1759. cause me to lust.

  1760. God, I don't want to

  1761. walk in places I

  1762. shouldn't walk.

  1763. I don't want to say

  1764. words I shouldn't say.

  1765. I don't want to listen

  1766. to things I shouldn't

  1767. listen to.

1768. I want to present every

1769. bit of who I am to you

  1770. for your kingdom.

1771. You know, he talks about

1772. that in the Sermon on the

  1773. Mount.

1774. One of the verses that

1775. has meant much to me

  1776. through the years is

  1777. Matthew 6.33.

  1778. Seek ye first the

  1779. kingdom of God and

  1780. his righteousness.

  1781. Seek ye first his

  1782. kingdom and his

  1783. righteousness.

  1784. You know that's where

  1785. our heart should be.

  1786. We should present our

  1787. members as instruments

  1788. for his kingdom, for

  1789. his glory, for his

  1790. honor.

  1791. That's the call, the

1792. high call of God in

1793. Christ Jesus is to not

  1794. live like the world.

1795. God is to live like

  1796. Christ, empowered by

  1797. Christ.

1798. You know, Paul says in

  1799. Galatians, it's no longer

1800. I who live, but Christ

1801. Jesus who lives in me.

  1802. And the life I live, I

1803. don't live by my own

1804. strength, but I live by

  1805. his power.

1806. Do you know he's given

1807. us everything we need for

  1808. life and godliness?

  1809. Everything we need for

  1810. life and godliness.

1811. He's already given it to

  1812. us.

  1813. There's no temptation

  1814. that's going to overtake

  1815. you.

  1816. He's provided a way of

  1817. escape.

1818. You know we need each

  1819. other to be faithful?

  1820. Have you ever been

  1821. inspired by someone who's

1822. in the kingdom to walk

  1823. more faithfully?

  1824. Have you ever been

  1825. blessed by somebody in

1826. times of pain that comes

1827. up and wraps their arm

  1828. around, doesn't say a

1829. word, they just care for

  1830. you.

  1831. They just love you.

  1832. You know, the

  1833. accountability that comes

  1834. would be in communion

  1835. together, to be in

  1836. fellowship together, to be

  1837. in a church body

  1838. together, to be involved

  1839. in each other's lives.

  1840. You know that's an

  1841. accountability for us, it's

  1842. a blessing for us, it's a

  1843. benefit.

1844. We need the strength of

1845. this body to be faithful.

1846. Left on our own on an

  1847. island, Satan's gate, it

1848. just takes one gun, doesn't

  1849. it?

1850. Boom, I'll get him this

  1851. time.

1852. You put us all together

  1853. and we're doing life

  1854. together, and somebody that

1855. knows me well knows that

  1856. that's a weak area of my

  1857. life, and Brother Bill

1858. says, hey man, don't do

  1859. that.

  1860. What do you mean?

  1861. Dog, yeah, okay, thanks.

  1862. Come on.

1863. And you help me in the

1864. blind spots and the weak

1865. spots in my life to be

1866. faithful in my walk to

  1867. God.

1868. You know we need each

  1869. other.

1870. That we might be faithful

  1871. to do what?

1872. To do this, to present our

  1873. members as instruments to

  1874. God.

  1875. Christian, know who you

  1876. are.

1877. Consider it at the moment

  1878. of temptation, the moment

  1879. of struggle, and then

1880. make a choice to present

1881. your life to God as a

  1882. living sacrifice.

1883. You know what Romans 12,

  1884. 1 and 2 says?

  1885. Listen to it.

1886. And this is the same

  1887. book.

1888. This is Paul, after he's

  1889. talking about all these

1890. truths, he gets to chapter

  1891. 12 and he says,

  1892. therefore, in light of

  1893. everything I've just shared

1894. with you, in light of this

  1895. truth that you've been

  1896. justified by faith, in

1897. light of this truth that

  1898. you've been united with

1899. Jesus in a way that is

  1900. amazing, to even consider

  1901. that we're in Christ,

  1902. united with him, in

  1903. relationship with him, we've

  1904. received everything that

  1905. was accomplished by his

  1906. death, we've received.

  1907. We've been imputed as

  1908. righteous.

1909. He said, in light of all

  1910. this, church, listen to

  1911. verse 12.

  1912. I appeal to you,

  1913. therefore, brothers, by

1914. the mercies of God, to

1915. present your bodies as a

  1916. what?

  1917. As a living sacrifice.

1918. If you ever in your mind

  1919. seen yourself climbing up

1920. on the altar that Isaac

1921. was placed on, you know,

1922. Abraham took Isaac and God

1923. said, you need to give

1924. away your son, you need to

  1925. sacrifice him to me.

1926. So he goes way out in the

  1927. wilderness and God says,

1928. I want you to sacrifice

  1929. your son.

  1930. Why?

1931. His son potentially was an

  1932. idol in his life.

1933. And he said, I want you

  1934. to sacrifice him.

  1935. And Isaac did what?

1936. He willingly laid on a

1937. cross and said, if that's

  1938. what it takes, I'm

  1939. willing.

  1940. Have you ever seen

  1941. yourself as stepping up

1942. onto an altar and laying

1943. yourself on the altar and

1944. say, here I am, God.

  1945. I'm all yours.

1946. I sacrifice myself to your

  1947. kingdom.

1948. I present myself to you,

  1949. God, in heart.

1950. I present myself to you as

  1951. a living sacrifice.

1952. Today, I'm going to be

  1953. lived for your kingdom.

  1954. Tomorrow, I'm going to

  1955. live for your kingdom.

1956. Next week, I'm going to

  1957. live for your kingdom.

1958. God, by your strength and

1959. your grace and your power,

  1960. I can't do it myself.

  1961. But I know you've given me

1962. everything I need for life

  1963. and guidance.

1964. And God, I cling to you to

1965. help me be faithful because I

1966. can't be faithful on my own.

  1967. I see my weakness.

1968. And what did Paul say?

1969. He said, when I'm weak, then

  1970. am I strong.

  1971. Why?

1972. Because I recognize that in

  1973. my own strength, I can't

  1974. accomplish anything that

  1975. honors God, anything that's

  1976. faithful.

  1977. When I'm weak, then I'm

  1978. strong.

  1979. Why?

  1980. It's because then I turned to

  1981. God and said, help.

  1982. Help me, Lord.

1983. Help me to be faithful.

1984. Help me to say no to sin.

1985. Help me to present my life

  1986. to you.

1987. Help me not to turn away.

1988. Help me not to walk after

1989. the ways of the world.

1990. God, I need your help.

  1991. I'm weak.

1992. And it's not until we see

1993. ourselves as weak that we'll

1994. understand John 15 that says

  1995. this.

1996. It's apart from me, Jesus

1997. speaking, apart from me, you

  1998. can do nothing.

1999. Apart from me, you can't add

  2000. anything to my kingdom.

2001. You can't benefit my kingdom.

2002. You can't do anything that is

  2003. righteous.

  2004. Even as a Christian, I can't do

2005. anything apart from the indwelling

2006. power of God in my life.

2007. We need to quit living for self,

2008. and we need to present our lives

2009. as a living sacrifice, which is

  2010. spiritual worship.

  2011. worship.

2012. You know, we come on Sunday

2013. mornings to sing, and it's my

2014. hope that we're singing from the

2015. heart and just not from the

  2016. mouth.

2017. When we sing these words, and we

2018. are very careful to pick out

2019. songs that are doctrinally sound,

2020. when we sing those, are we singing

  2021. from the heart?

  2022. Are we worshiping?

2023. Are we recognizing the truths of

  2024. those songs?

  2025. What is real worship?

2026. You know what worship is?

2027. Say, God, I so worship you that I

2028. desire to do your will and your

  2029. will alone.

  2030. Here I am.

2031. Use me in any way you choose.

2032. You empower me to be faithful to

  2033. live for your kingdom.

  2034. Church, that's what he's called us

  2035. to.

2036. Is it a high call?

2037. Does that make you nervous?

2038. Do you feel like you're going to be

2039. successful tomorrow living for him

  2040. in that way?

  2041. Know, consider, and present.

2042. By his power, present yourself to

2043. him that he might be glorified, that

2044. he might be exalted, that he might

  2045. be worshiped.

  2046. Let's pray.

2047. Father, as I share these truths this

2048. morning, the thing that strikes me at

2049. this moment is my weakness, God.

2050. I just confess to you that I often

2051. run after, and I'm sure it's true for

2052. us this morning, many of us, is that we

2053. often run after selfish things.

2054. We often try to live this Christian life

2055. in our own strength, by our own ability.

2056. And God, I just confess to you that I

2057. recognize the weakness more now than

  2058. ever before.

2059. And I hope that's true for all of us.

2060. God, I pray that you would show us our

  2061. weakness.

2062. And God, we desire to cling to you.

2063. We desire to latch our hands on to you,

2064. knowing that, God, if you don't do it in

2065. and through us, we'll never honor you.

2066. We'll never live for you.

2067. So, God, do a work in our life that would be

  2068. powerful.

2069. God, help us to live for you, to present

2070. our members as instruments of righteousness,

2071. to offer ourselves as living sacrifices,

2072. that we might live fully for you.

2073. Do that work in our life, I pray in Christ's name.

  2074. Amen.

  2075. Amen.

  2076. Amen.

  2077. Amen.

  2078. Amen.

  2079. Amen.
