  1. Amen. Well, let's open up our Bibles this morning to the Book of Psalms. Book of Psalms. We are

  2. diving into our summer series in the Book of Psalms this morning, beginning again. We preached

  3. Psalms chapters 1 through 9 last summer, and we're beginning in chapter 10 this summer. And for the

    Psalms 1 chapter mention

  4. next 11 weeks, we'll be walking through the Book of Psalms, chapters 10 through 20. We paused our

    Psalms 10 chapter mention

  5. series in Daniel. We were preaching Daniel chapter 1 through 6, and we'll pick that up, Lord willing,

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  6. in the fall. But this morning, we begin with Psalm chapter 10. So when you found that in your Bibles,

    Psalms 10 chapter mention

  7. if you would, let's stand together in honor of God's Word as I read Psalm chapter 10.

    Psalms 10 chapter mention

  8. Why, O Lord, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? In arrogance,

  9. the wicked hotly pursue the poor. Let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised.

  10. For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces

  11. the Lord. In the pride of his face, the wicked does not seek him. All his thoughts are, there is no

  12. God. His ways prosper at all times. Your judgments are on high, out of his sight. As for all his foes,

  13. he puffs at them. He says in his heart, I shall not be moved. Throughout all generations, I shall not

  14. meet adversity. His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression. Under his tongue are

  15. mischief and iniquity. He sits in ambush in the villages. In hiding places, he murders the innocent.

  16. His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless. He lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket.

  17. He lurks that he may seize the poor. He seizes the poor when he draws him into his net. The helpless

  18. are crushed, sink down, and fall by his might. He says in his heart, God has forgotten. He has hidden

  19. his face. He will never see it. Arise, O Lord. O God, lift up your hand. Forget not the afflicted.

  20. Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, you will not call to account?

  21. But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands.

  22. To you, the helpless commits himself. You have been the helper of the fatherless.

  23. Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer. Call his wickedness to account until you find none.

  24. The Lord is king forever and ever. The nations perish from his land. O Lord, you hear the desire of the

  25. afflicted. You will strengthen their heart. You will incline your ear to do justice to the fatherless and

  26. the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. Lord, we thank you again for your

  27. good and holy word. And we pray for ears to hear it and hearts to receive it and to understand it. We pray in Christ's name. Amen.

  28. You may be seated.

  29. You may have heard and seen a missions organization in the news over the past few weeks called Missions in Haiti, Inc.

  30. And the website for Missions in Haiti, Inc. says that its goal as an organization is to see the gospel of Christ make a difference in the lives of Haiti's young people.

  31. And so the organization, it seeks specifically to share the gospel with the youth in Haiti because as they said on their website,

  32. they said although the entire nation is steeped in poverty, the children suffer the worst.

  33. Thousands are malnourished, uneducated, and headed for hopeless lives apart from Christ. That's the situation in Haiti.

  34. The organization has started a home called the House of Compassion that houses 18 boys and 18 girls

  35. through their schooling age all the way until they are independent and able to provide for themselves.

  36. They've started another boys' home that has 22 young boys there cared for,

  37. along with a church that they've established there in Haiti and a school with over 240 students,

  38. all with the goal of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and the love of Jesus Christ with the young and the weak and the vulnerable there in Haiti.

  39. That's what Christians do. That's what God has done for us in Christ.

  40. And so we share that heart of compassion for the weak.

  41. But if you saw them in the news, then you know that they weren't in the news for the incredible work that they've been doing.

  42. They were in the news because three of their leaders, Davy and Natalie Lloyd, age 23 and 21,

  43. as well as Jude Montice, the country's director for Missions in Haiti, Inc.,

  44. were ambushed as they left their church and eventually were gunned down and murdered by a gang.

  45. And the sad truth is that this is the world that we live in.

  46. The world that we live in is broken and it's cursed by sin.

  47. And events like this, like what happened in Haiti, are commonplace.

  48. They happen every day all over the globe.

  49. And we know this. We know that this happens.

  50. But even still, when we hear things like this, we have to ask,

  51. why does this happen?

  52. And our heart feels the injustice of situations like this.

  53. And we want to cry out, God, that's not fair.

  54. God, don't you see?

  55. God, don't you care?

  56. Where is God when things like this happen?

  57. Where is God when the wicked attack?

  58. Does he not see what's happening here?

  59. Why does he not step in and act and make things right?

  60. Well, thankfully, none of us in the room, as far as I'm aware,

  61. have experienced that level of attack and injustice.

  62. But I'd be willing to bet that all of us on some level have seen or experienced some sort of injustice.

  63. You know what unfair feels like, don't you?

  64. And maybe you've been taken advantage of or treated unfairly.

  65. Maybe you've been hurt and you feel like you did nothing to deserve it.

  66. All of us in the world that we live in have come in close contact with wickedness.

  67. And if you've ever asked these questions,

  68. God, where are you?

  69. God, why don't you act?

  70. God, do you care?

  71. God, do you see?

  72. God, are you hearing my prayers?

  73. If you've ever asked these questions, well, guess what?

  74. You have a lot in common with King David here in Psalm chapter 10.

    Psalms 10 chapter mention

  75. In fact, this entire section of Psalms that we're beginning this morning,

  76. Psalms chapter 10 through 14,

    Psalms 10 chapter mention

  77. they give us an up close and personal view into the lives of the wicked.

  78. And they describe for us what wickedness looks like here in our world.

  79. And it gives us the response of the righteous to the wicked as well as God's response to the wicked.

  80. Here in Psalm chapter 10, David shows us the response of the king to the actions of the wicked.

    Psalms 10 chapter mention

  81. And we're going to see that response in three parts here this morning.

  82. If you're taking notes, this helps you to follow along.

  83. We see three responses here to the wicked.

  84. We have the question in verse 1.

  85. We have the case in verses 2 through 11.

  86. And lastly, we'll see the confidence in verses 12 through 18.

  87. The question, the case, and the confidence.

  88. First, verse 1, it gives us the question.

  89. It really is two questions, isn't it?

  90. Look there to verse 1.

  91. David is looking out at the actions of the wicked,

  92. and we'll see exactly what those actions were here in just a moment.

  93. But he looks out at the actions of the wicked, and he calls out to God,

  94. God, why are you not doing something about this?

  95. God, where are you?

  96. And sometimes when we see the wickedness in the world, we want to cry out,

  97. why is it that the wicked seem to be able to do whatever it is they want to do,

  98. and they prosper?

  99. Why is it that the wicked get to take advantage of the poor and the vulnerable?

  100. Why is it that the wicked seem to run rampant,

  101. and God doesn't seem to do anything about it?

  102. They don't suffer any sort of consequence.

  103. Why is it that the wicked seem to prosper while the righteous seem to suffer?

  104. But you know, it's interesting here, the questions David asks.

  105. He doesn't ever ask why the wicked do what they do.

  106. That question never crosses his mind.

  107. He understands that the wicked are wicked.

  108. He doesn't need anybody to explain why the wicked act wickedly.

  109. His questions, they're directed to the Lord.

  110. You see this too, don't you?

  111. You know, aren't you seeing the same thing that I'm seeing?

  112. So why does it seem as if you've hidden yourself?

  113. Why do you stand far away while the wicked go and they do whatever they want to do?

  114. You know, at first glance, as we read this, these questions,

  115. they seem on the surface like they might be offensive to the Lord

  116. or irreverent to ask these questions.

  117. But really, what I want you to see here is that

  118. these questions are rooted in what David knows

  119. and believes to be true about God and his character.

  120. David knows that God is just,

  121. so therefore, why is he letting all of this slide?

  122. David knows that God sees all.

  123. He knows that he's sovereign,

  124. so therefore, why does it seem like God has hidden himself?

  125. David knows that God is good,

  126. so therefore, he asks God,

  127. God, where are you?

  128. See, these questions, they aren't attacks on God's character.

  129. These questions, these are questions of faith.

  130. These are expressions of confidence in the character of God.

  131. The wicked may ask,

  132. where is your God?

  133. And they ask in disbelief,

  134. not thinking that God will ever call them to account,

  135. but the righteous,

  136. they look out and they see the wicked running rampant,

  137. and they ask,

  138. God, where are you?

  139. Not because they don't believe God is there,

  140. but because they do believe he's there.

  141. So they ask these questions in faith.

  142. You know, these questions are rooted in a tension

  143. that I'm confident all of us feel.

  144. Am I alone in this?

  145. All of us feel this tension here on this side of eternity.

  146. We know that God is good.

  147. We know that God is sovereign.

  148. We know that God is just.

  149. We know that God will right every wrong.

  150. We know that God sees and he cares,

  151. and yet, here and now,

  152. the wicked seem to get away with a whole lot, don't they?

  153. And the wicked are often successful in their efforts.

  154. They pile up money.

  155. They get promoted at work.

  156. They seem like they can do whatever they want to do without any consequence.

  157. Those who know the Lord, we feel this tension.

  158. We know God is good.

  159. So where is he?

  160. Where is he when three missionaries are gunned down by wicked men in Haiti?

  161. And how can they just get away with it?

  162. We know the names of the dead, but we have no idea the names of the attackers.

  163. Why?

  164. Because they're off running free.

  165. When will a good God step in and make things right?

  166. This is the tension that David is feeling.

  167. Do you feel it?

  168. And I know that we understand these questions too, church.

  169. This isn't just an abstract concept for us.

  170. You know, we pray together every week in Sunday school,

  171. and as we meet together in different venues,

  172. and I hear your struggles.

  173. Where is God when evil men hack into our bank accounts and steal our money?

  174. Steal our identity.

  175. Make our lives difficult.

  176. Where is God when someone lets their dogs loose on our property?

  177. Wreak havoc.

  178. Destroy what belongs to us.

  179. Where is God when a contractor takes all of our money and doesn't come to finish the job?

  180. Why is he not stepping in and coming to the rescue like he did with Daniel?

  181. We've been studying Daniel.

  182. And Daniel was tossed into the lion's den.

  183. The scheme of the wicked was to destroy him.

  184. God intervened, redeemed him immediately.

  185. Why does he do that all the time?

  186. You know, the hard truth is that that sort of miraculous intervention of divine justice,

  187. like what we saw with Daniel, is the exception rather than the rule.

  188. Often, unfortunately, we don't get justice here.

  189. Often, unfortunately, the wicked seem to win.

  190. And unfortunately, we may never fully have these questions answered on this side of eternity,

  191. at least not in the way that we want them to be.

  192. But if anything, this first verse of Psalm chapter 10, I think David shows us that these questions are okay to ask.

    Psalms 10 chapter mention

  193. These questions are okay for us to ask as we look out and we see the wickedness around us.

  194. But more than that, I believe that if you are grieved by injustice that you see here in the world,

  195. if you're bothered by wickedness,

  196. if you're personally affected by any sort of injustice or wickedness,

  197. it is good and it is right for us as God's people to cry out in prayer and call upon the Lord to act.

  198. Not doubting who he is, not doubting his goodness, but appealing to his goodness.

  199. God, would you see and would you do something about this?

  200. David shows us that it's okay to ask these questions in faith

  201. and appeal to God's holiness and his justice

  202. and to ask, Lord, I know you're good, I know you're sovereign, I know you're just,

  203. so will you act?

  204. David asks these questions in verse 1 and then 2nd, in verses 2 through 11,

  205. David lays out his case before the Lord.

  206. This is our second point.

  207. The second response is the case.

  208. David is fully aware of the wickedness around him

  209. and so he begins to call it out.

  210. It's as if he's acting like a prosecuting attorney.

  211. He's bringing his case before the judge.

  212. He's listing out all the offenses,

  213. all the ways that the wicked are guilty.

  214. Verses 2 through 11 are exhibit A through Z.

  215. So what is it that has David so bothered?

  216. Well, we don't know exactly the specific situation,

  217. what the issue was here,

  218. but we do know clearly that these wicked people

  219. were taking advantage of the poor.

  220. Look there to verse 2.

  221. Verse 2 says,

  222. In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor.

  223. In verse 8,

  224. it says,

  225. He sits in ambush in the villages,

  226. in hiding places.

  227. He murders the innocent.

  228. His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless.

  229. He lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket.

  230. David says,

  231. The wicked lurks that he may seize the poor

  232. and draws him into his net.

  233. The helpless are crushed,

  234. sink down,

  235. and fall by his might.

  236. The wicked are attacking the poor.

  237. Why would they do this?

  238. It's because the poor are vulnerable.

  239. They're an easy target.

  240. And these wicked people aren't pursuing the rich.

  241. They're not pursuing the strong.

  242. They're not pursuing anybody

  243. who might theoretically be able to defend themselves.

  244. They're taking advantage of the weak and the vulnerable.

  245. It says that they lurk like a lion.

  246. I don't know if you've ever watched a National Geographic show

  247. and seen a lion go on the hunt.

  248. Lions go after the weak, don't they?

  249. And the vulnerable,

  250. they take the first easy meal they can get.

  251. If a zebra falls away from that pack,

  252. if they start to slow down,

  253. if they break their leg,

  254. they don't keep running for the strong,

  255. what do they do?

  256. They attack the weak.

  257. That's who the lion is after.

  258. In a similar way,

  259. David says,

  260. The wicked are hunting down the poor

  261. and the vulnerable

  262. because to them,

  263. they're easy targets.

  264. This is evil behavior.

  265. This is far from the heart of God.

  266. The Lord cares for the orphan and the widow.

  267. The Lord has a heart that cares for the fatherless,

  268. for the poor,

  269. for the helpless,

  270. for the oppressed,

  271. and he calls his people to do the same.

  272. But to the wicked,

  273. they don't see a need to meet

  274. or a person to love.

  275. They see an opportunity to exploit.

  276. And apparently,

  277. their weapon of choice here,

  278. verse 7,

  279. it says,

  280. is their words.

  281. Verse 7 says,

  282. Their mouths are filled with cursing

  283. and deceit

  284. and oppression.

  285. And under his tongue

  286. are mischief

  287. and iniquity.

  288. The weapon that the wicked

  289. use to trap the poor

  290. and the vulnerable

  291. is a net of lying words.

  292. And I know I don't have to tell you

  293. that here,

  294. some 3,000 years later

  295. in the year 2024,

  296. not much has changed.

  297. It's a sad truth,

  298. but we know this.

  299. You cannot believe

  300. everything somebody tells you.

  301. You cannot believe

  302. everything you see on television.

  303. You cannot trust

  304. every word that you read.

  305. You cannot trust

  306. every person that you meet.

  307. Now, we don't need to be

  308. jaded

  309. and distrust anybody

  310. and everything.

  311. We don't need to be

  312. overly skeptical

  313. of everybody

  314. and everything that we hear,

  315. but we do need to be

  316. wise as serpents

  317. and innocent as doves.

  318. We do need to understand

  319. that wicked people then

  320. and wicked people now

  321. still want to trap you

  322. with lying words.

  323. I almost got caught

  324. the other day.

  325. Everywhere you turn,

  326. there's a new scam

  327. to fall into.

  328. I don't know how many times

  329. I've been called

  330. saying that I owe back taxes

  331. or need a new insurance plan.

  332. It's about every day now.

  333. I saw somebody

  334. giving away a guitar.

  335. They said that

  336. they had the sob story.

  337. It was moving.

  338. Their son had died

  339. in a car crash

  340. and they had this guitar

  341. at their home

  342. that they wanted to go

  343. to a good home.

  344. They didn't want to sit there

  345. and look at it anymore.

  346. And they said,

  347. I will give this guitar

  348. away for free

  349. if you will just give me

  350. your payment information

  351. so that you can pay

  352. shipping for it,

  353. but you get the instrument

  354. for free, right?

  355. Should have known better.

  356. But the fact is

  357. there are scams

  358. everywhere you turn.

  359. There's people wanting

  360. to take advantage of you

  361. everywhere you turn.

  362. Elder fraud

  363. is increasingly common

  364. and the FBI actually says

  365. that senior citizens

  366. lose over $3 billion

  367. every year

  368. to elder fraud.

  369. And I won't tell you

  370. who fits in this category

  371. and who doesn't?

  372. You can do that yourself.

  373. But I will just say this.

  374. We need to be aware.

  375. People want to take

  376. advantage of you.

  377. They'll call you

  378. and tell you

  379. that you've won a sweepstakes

  380. for just a small fee

  381. you can collect.

  382. And they'll sell you insurance

  383. or some policy

  384. you don't really need

  385. or that may not exist.

  386. They'll call you

  387. and tell you

  388. a loved one is in jail

  389. and need money

  390. to be bailed out.

  391. There are a million ways

  392. that you can get

  393. taken advantage of.

  394. The possibilities are endless

  395. and increasingly endless

  396. for a wicked person

  397. to make a quick dime

  398. off of somebody vulnerable.

  399. And David's bothered

  400. by this.

  401. David's upset

  402. about this.

  403. And David says

  404. that ultimately

  405. this type of wickedness,

  406. you know where it begins?

  407. Ultimately,

  408. this type of wickedness

  409. is rooted in a

  410. heart rejection

  411. of God.

  412. Verse 3.

  413. It says,

  414. the wicked boast

  415. of the desires

  416. of his soul.

  417. He's prideful.

  418. And the one greedy

  419. for gain

  420. curses

  421. and renounces

  422. the Lord.

  423. In the pride

  424. of his face,

  425. the wicked does not

  426. seek him.

  427. All of his thoughts

  428. are there is no God.

  429. You know,

  430. another way to translate that,

  431. you might have a footnote

  432. there at the bottom,

  433. is that in the pride

  434. of his anger,

  435. the wicked says

  436. he will not

  437. call to account.

  438. In other words,

  439. God won't do

  440. anything about this.

  441. I can do

  442. whatever

  443. I want.

  444. And God

  445. won't

  446. call it

  447. to account.

  448. And David says,

  449. God,

  450. don't you see

  451. what they're doing?

  452. Here in verses

  453. 2-11,

  454. it's as if David

  455. is pointing

  456. all of this out.

  457. He's laying it all out

  458. before the Lord.

  459. And he's saying,

  460. God,

  461. they say you won't

  462. judge them

  463. because you

  464. haven't judged them.

  465. They're saying

  466. there's no consequence

  467. for their actions

  468. because there haven't

  469. been any consequences

  470. for their actions.

  471. They're rich

  472. and fat

  473. and happy

  474. and successful

  475. and they're doing great

  476. while your people

  477. are struggling.

  478. Why don't you

  479. do something about it?

  480. His ways

  481. prosper at all times,

  482. he says in verse 5.

  483. And because of this,

  484. because of this

  485. complete lack

  486. of consequence,

  487. he says in his heart,

  488. I shall not be moved.

  489. Throughout all generations,

  490. I shall not meet

  491. adversity.

  492. The issue here

  493. is that God's

  494. inaction

  495. in the face

  496. of injustice

  497. makes the wicked

  498. feel invincible.

  499. evil.

  500. They've assumed

  501. that God's inaction

  502. means God's indifference.

  503. But we know

  504. that that's a fatal mistake.

  505. And we know

  506. God is not

  507. indifferent

  508. to the actions

  509. of the wicked.

  510. And the Bible

  511. speaks about God's

  512. delaying judgment

  513. not as a sign

  514. of indifference

  515. but as a demonstration

  516. of his patience.

  517. It's our issue

  518. and when we look out

  519. and when we see

  520. wickedness

  521. all around us,

  522. when we see the wicked

  523. being successful

  524. in their efforts

  525. to exploit the poor,

  526. when we see the wicked

  527. doing whatever

  528. they want to do

  529. and it seems like

  530. God isn't doing

  531. anything about it,

  532. our issue

  533. isn't that we

  534. are more just

  535. than God

  536. or that we

  537. are more holy

  538. than God

  539. or that we

  540. are more aware

  541. of the situation

  542. than God.

  543. but that we

  544. are far less

  545. patient

  546. than God.

  547. God

  548. is infinitely

  549. just.

  550. He is infinitely

  551. holy.

  552. He is

  553. totally

  554. aware

  555. of every

  556. situation

  557. in his domain

  558. everywhere

  559. on the earth

  560. at all times

  561. and in all places

  562. and yet

  563. God is

  564. patient

  565. towards the wicked.

  566. God is

  567. long

  568. suffering

  569. towards the wicked.

  570. He delays

  571. judgment

  572. but not

  573. forever.

  574. He is not

  575. infinitely

  576. patient

  577. towards the wicked

  578. and one day

  579. that bill

  580. will come

  581. due.

  582. And so it's

  583. because of this

  584. that David

  585. calls out to the

  586. Lord third

  587. with confidence.

  588. here in

  589. verses 12

  590. through 18

  591. this is the

  592. third response

  593. of the king

  594. the Lord

  595. David

  596. calls out

  597. in confidence

  598. to the Lord.

  599. Look there

  600. to verse 12.

  601. David turns

  602. his attention

  603. from the wicked

  604. now to the Lord

  605. and he prays

  606. arise

  607. arise O Lord

  608. O God

  609. lift up

  610. your hand

  611. forget not

  612. the afflicted

  613. why does the

  614. wicked

  615. renounce God

  616. and say in his

  617. heart you will

  618. not call to

  619. account

  620. but you do

  621. see

  622. you note

  623. mischief

  624. and vexation

  625. that you may

  626. take it into

  627. your hands

  628. to you

  629. the helpless

  630. commits himself

  631. you have been

  632. the helper

  633. of the fatherless

  634. break the arm

  635. of the wicked

  636. and evil doer

  637. call his wickedness

  638. to account

  639. till you find

  640. none

  641. this is a call

  642. for God

  643. to take action

  644. why?

  645. because again

  646. David is confident

  647. in the holy

  648. character of God

  649. and once again

  650. we've come

  651. full circle here

  652. you see that?

  653. once again

  654. we're back

  655. to the holy

  656. righteous

  657. character of God

  658. the sovereign

  659. kingship

  660. of a good

  661. and holy God

  662. the same

  663. character

  664. the same

  665. confidence

  666. in the character

  667. of God

  668. that led David

  669. to ask

  670. the question

  671. where are you?

  672. is the same

  673. character

  674. and confidence

  675. that leads

  676. David now

  677. to call God

  678. to action

  679. David shows us

  680. that the confidence

  681. of the righteous

  682. in the face

  683. of wickedness

  684. and injustice

  685. is that

  686. the Lord

  687. is king

  688. verse 16

  689. the Lord

  690. is king

  691. forever

  692. and ever

  693. the nations

  694. perish

  695. from his land

  696. oh Lord

  697. you hear

  698. the desire

  699. of the afflicted

  700. you will

  701. strengthen

  702. their heart

  703. you will

  704. incline

  705. your ear

  706. to do justice

  707. to the fatherless

  708. and the oppressed

  709. so that man

  710. who is of the earth

  711. may strike terror

  712. no more

  713. church

  714. God's

  715. kingship

  716. is our

  717. ultimate confidence

  718. in the face

  719. of wickedness

  720. and injustice

  721. David the king

  722. he looks up

  723. and he

  724. he rests

  725. in the truth

  726. that ultimately

  727. God

  728. the king

  729. does what a good

  730. king ought to do

  731. that God

  732. the king

  733. makes certain

  734. that justice

  735. is done

  736. that God

  737. the king

  738. makes certain

  739. that the afflicted

  740. one

  741. is cared for

  742. and restored

  743. that God

  744. the king

  745. makes certain

  746. that all his enemies

  747. are dealt with

  748. in full

  749. he rests

  750. in the truth

  751. that God

  752. the king

  753. is both

  754. strong

  755. and tender

  756. he is a terror

  757. to the wicked

  758. but a helper

  759. to the fatherless

  760. this is both

  761. a word of

  762. warning for the wicked

  763. and a word of comfort

  764. for the afflicted

  765. God

  766. is king

  767. and God

  768. sees

  769. all

  770. it's a warning

  771. for the wicked

  772. that when we think

  773. that no one

  774. is watching

  775. when we think

  776. that we've

  777. successfully hidden

  778. our sin

  779. maybe we can hide

  780. things from one another

  781. maybe we can deceive

  782. one another

  783. but the Lord

  784. is not fooled

  785. the Lord

  786. takes note

  787. of every evil deed

  788. this is a call

  789. for the wicked

  790. to repent

  791. because no one

  792. can hide their sin

  793. from the Lord

  794. the only place to run

  795. is to him

  796. for mercy

  797. it's a warning

  798. to the wicked

  799. and at the same time

  800. it's a comfort

  801. for those

  802. who are afflicted

  803. God

  804. the king

  805. will take

  806. your affliction

  807. into his

  808. own

  809. hands

  810. God

  811. hears

  812. your cries

  813. God

  814. sees

  815. your struggle

  816. verse 14

  817. says

  818. you will take

  819. it into

  820. your

  821. hands

  822. you break

  823. the arm

  824. of the wicked

  825. and the

  826. evildoer

  827. you call

  828. his wickedness

  829. to account

  830. till you find

  831. none

  832. how liberating

  833. is that truth

  834. some of us

  835. have a hard time

  836. with this

  837. as we get

  838. this

  839. this pent up

  840. anger

  841. and frustration

  842. we call it

  843. righteous

  844. anger

  845. we get so

  846. mad

  847. and so

  848. worked up

  849. and we

  850. turn on the

  851. news

  852. and we

  853. see injustice

  854. everywhere

  855. we look

  856. but listen

  857. to this

  858. and just rest

  859. in this truth

  860. Christian

  861. our confidence

  862. is that

  863. God

  864. the king

  865. will himself

  866. take up

  867. the cause

  868. of the weak

  869. God

  870. himself

  871. will take up

  872. the cause

  873. of the afflicted

  874. and the poor

  875. God

  876. himself

  877. will defend

  878. his people

  879. and God

  880. himself

  881. will repay

  882. every wicked

  883. deed

  884. which means

  885. we don't have

  886. to go around

  887. breaking the arms

  888. of the wicked

  889. and evildoers

  890. as much as

  891. we may like to

  892. God

  893. will do it

  894. we can

  895. turn the other

  896. cheek

  897. when we're

  898. wronged

  899. not because

  900. justice is not

  901. important

  902. but because

  903. we are

  904. confident

  905. God

  906. our king

  907. has seen

  908. it

  909. and God

  910. our king

  911. will

  912. address it

  913. if any

  914. of us

  915. have been

  916. wronged

  917. we

  918. we rest

  919. in the

  920. sovereign

  921. reign

  922. of God

  923. and we

  924. trust

  925. that God

  926. himself

  927. will take

  928. up

  929. our

  930. cause

  931. commit

  932. yourself

  933. to him

  934. and our

  935. confidence

  936. and David's

  937. confidence

  938. is that

  939. God

  940. the king

  941. will execute

  942. justice

  943. God

  944. the king

  945. will

  946. relieve

  947. his

  948. people

  949. and he

  950. will

  951. judge

  952. the

  953. wicked

  954. but I

  955. have one

  956. more

  957. question

  958. here

  959. for us

  960. which is

  961. when

  962. when

  963. we believe

  964. that God

  965. will do

  966. this

  967. we believe

  968. that there's

  969. relief coming

  970. for his

  971. people

  972. we believe

  973. that there's

  974. a day

  975. coming

  976. when judgment

  977. will be

  978. brought upon

  979. the wicked

  980. but when

  981. I'd like you

  982. to flip over

  983. to 2nd

  984. Thessalonians

  985. as we close

  986. chapter 5

  987. through 9

  988. excuse me

  989. chapter 1

  990. verses 5

  991. through 9

  992. Paul writes

  993. this is evidence

  994. of the righteous

  995. judgment of

  996. God

  997. that you may

  998. be considered

  999. worthy of the

  1000. kingdom of

  1001. God

  1002. for which

  1003. you are also

  1004. suffering

  1005. since indeed

  1006. God considers

  1007. it just

  1008. to repay

  1009. with affliction

  1010. those who

  1011. afflict you

  1012. and to grant

  1013. relief to you

  1014. who are afflicted

  1015. as well as

  1016. to us

  1017. when

  1018. when will

  1019. justice come

  1020. when will

  1021. God repay

  1022. his enemies

  1023. and relieve

  1024. his afflicted

  1025. people

  1026. look there

  1027. when the

  1028. Lord

  1029. Jesus

  1030. is revealed

  1031. from heaven

  1032. with his

  1033. mighty angels

  1034. and flaming

  1035. fire

  1036. inflicting

  1037. vengeance

  1038. on those

  1039. who do

  1040. not know

  1041. God

  1042. and on

  1043. those who

  1044. do not

  1045. obey

  1046. the gospel

  1047. of our

  1048. Lord

  1049. Jesus

  1050. they will

  1051. suffer the

  1052. punishment

  1053. of eternal

  1054. destruction

  1055. away from

  1056. the presence

  1057. of the

  1058. Lord

  1059. and from

  1060. the glory

  1061. of his

  1062. might

  1063. when

  1064. when he

  1065. comes on

  1066. that day

  1067. to be glorified

  1068. in his

  1069. saints

  1070. and to be

  1071. marveled at

  1072. among all

  1073. who have

  1074. believed

  1075. because our

  1076. testimony

  1077. to you

  1078. was believed

  1079. church our

  1080. ultimate

  1081. hope

  1082. for justice

  1083. is not

  1084. here

  1085. and now

  1086. we may

  1087. never

  1088. get

  1089. perfect

  1090. justice

  1091. here

  1092. and now

  1093. we may

  1094. suffer loss

  1095. here

  1096. and now

  1097. we will

  1098. be cheated

  1099. and we

  1100. will be

  1101. wronged

  1102. and the

  1103. wicked

  1104. will look

  1105. like they're

  1106. getting

  1107. away with

  1108. it

  1109. but our

  1110. hope

  1111. and our

  1112. confidence

  1113. is not

  1114. in the

  1115. here

  1116. and now

  1117. ultimately

  1118. our

  1119. confidence

  1120. is in

  1121. the day

  1122. of the

  1123. Lord

  1124. when our

  1125. King

  1126. Jesus

  1127. Christ

  1128. will return

  1129. to relieve

  1130. his

  1131. saints

  1132. and to

  1133. afflict

  1134. his

  1135. enemies

  1136. for

  1137. final

  1138. and

  1139. complete

  1140. justice

  1141. it's

  1142. then

  1143. that the

  1144. wicked

  1145. will finally

  1146. be judged

  1147. and the

  1148. righteous

  1149. will finally

  1150. be

  1151. delivered

  1152. here in

  1153. part

  1154. but then

  1155. in

  1156. full

  1157. that's

  1158. our

  1159. hope

  1160. so

  1161. church

  1162. our

  1163. call

  1164. as we

  1165. face

  1166. all sorts

  1167. of wickedness

  1168. here

  1169. in this

  1170. world

  1171. our

  1172. call

  1173. is to

  1174. rest

  1175. in the

  1176. reign

  1177. of

  1178. King

  1179. Jesus

  1180. and to

  1181. call upon

  1182. him

  1183. for

  1184. that

  1185. future

  1186. coming

  1187. justice

  1188. to break

  1189. its way

  1190. into

  1191. the

  1192. present

  1193. but we

  1194. know

  1195. that

  1196. justice

  1197. will only

  1198. come in

  1199. full

  1200. on that

  1201. day

  1202. when he

  1203. returns

  1204. and so

  1205. we live

  1206. each

  1207. day

  1208. now

  1209. in light

  1210. of that

  1211. coming

  1212. day

  1213. if

  1214. you're

  1215. not

  1216. a

  1217. follower

  1218. of

  1219. Jesus

  1220. Christ

  1221. the

  1222. application

  1223. for you

  1224. from this

  1225. passage

  1226. is to

  1227. repent

  1228. and to

  1229. call upon

  1230. him in

  1231. faith

  1232. to bend

  1233. the knee

  1234. to King

  1235. Jesus

  1236. to trust

  1237. in him

  1238. and he

  1239. will not

  1240. turn even

  1241. the most

  1242. wicked

  1243. sinner

  1244. away

  1245. and if

  1246. you are

  1247. afflicted

  1248. if you're

  1249. tired

  1250. of seeing

  1251. injustice

  1252. every single

  1253. day

  1254. here in

  1255. this

  1256. present

  1257. age

  1258. our

  1259. application

  1260. this

  1360. to

  1361. close

  1362. this

  1363. morning

  1364. by

  1365. pointing

  1366. you

  1367. to

  1368. a

  1369. passage

  1370. that

  1371. we

  1388. our

  1389. hope

  1390. that

  1391. we

  1407. to

  1408. look

  1409. forward

  1410. to

  1411. when

  1412. Christ

  1413. returns

  1414. Revelation

  1415. 22

  1420. of God

  1421. is with

  1422. man

  1423. he will

  1424. dwell

  1425. with them

  1426. and they

  1427. will be

  1428. his

  1430. and

  1431. God

  1432. himself

  1433. will

  1434. be

  1435. with

  1436. them

  1437. as

  1438. their

  1439. God

  1440. he

  1441. will

  1442. wipe

  1443. away

  1444. every

  1445. tear

  1446. from

  1447. their

  1448. eyes

  1449. and

  1450. death

  1451. shall

  1452. be

  1453. no

  1454. more

  1455. neither

  1456. shall

  1457. there

  1458. be

  1459. mourning

  1460. nor

  1461. crying

  1462. nor

  1464. anymore

  1465. for

  1474. will there

  1475. be

  1476. anything

  1477. accursed

  1478. but

  1479. the throne

  1480. of God

  1481. and of

  1482. the

  1483. lamb

  1484. will

  1485. be

  1486. in

  1487. it

  1488. and

  1489. his

  1490. servants

  1492. worship

  1493. him

  1494. they

  1495. will

  1496. see

  1497. his

  1498. face

  1499. and

  1500. here's

  1501. how

  1502. it

  1503. ends

  1504. he

  1505. who

  1506. testifies

  1507. to

  1508. these

  1509. things

  1510. says

  1511. surely

  1512. I

  1513. am

  1514. coming

  1515. soon

  1516. surely

  1517. I

  1518. am

  1519. coming

  1520. soon

  1521. surely

  1522. I

  1523. am

  1524. coming

  1525. soon

  1526. if you

  1527. are

  1528. walking

  1529. in

  1530. wickedness

  1531. the

  1532. day

  1533. of

  1534. judgment

  1535. is

  1536. coming

  1537. soon

  1538. and

  1539. if

  1540. you

  1541. are

  1542. afflicted

  1543. if

  1544. you

  1545. are

  1546. tired

  1547. of

  1548. injustice

  1549. if

  1550. you

  1551. are

  1552. ready

  1553. for

  1554. wickedness

  1555. to be

  1556. dealt

  1557. with

  1558. surely

  1559. I

  1560. am

  1574. desire

  1575. for

  1576. wickedness

  1577. in

  1578. this

  1579. day

  1580. to

  1581. be

  1582. dealt

  1583. with

  1584. Lord

  1585. it's

  1586. our

  1587. heart

  1588. desire

  1589. that

  1590. you

  1591. would

  1592. bring

  1593. justice

  1594. and

  1595. we

  1596. thank

  1597. you

  1598. Father

  1599. for

  1600. the

  1601. hope

  1602. of

  1603. Christ

  1604. that

  1605. you

  1606. have

  1607. shown

  1608. us

  1609. at

  1610. the

  1611. cross

  1612. how

  1613. seriously

  1614. you

  1615. take

  1616. sin

  1617. that

  1618. you

  1619. have

  1620. shown

  1621. us

  1622. perfect

  1623. justice

  1624. and

  1625. given

  1626. us

  1627. certain

  1628. hope

  1629. for

  1630. salvation

  1631. at

  1632. the

  1633. cross

  1634. and

  1635. Lord

  1636. the

  1637. great

  1638. hope

  1639. that

  1640. we

  1641. have

  1642. of

  1643. his

  1644. return

  1645. that

  1646. he

  1647. will

  1648. come

  1649. and

  1650. reign

  1651. forever

  1652. no

  1653. longer

  1654. will

  1655. there

  1666. pain

  1667. Father

  1668. we

  1669. we

  1670. pray

  1671. God

  1672. that

  1673. if

  1674. there

  1676. any

  1677. who

  1678. do

  1679. not

  1680. know

  1681. you

  1682. Lord

  1683. would

  1684. you

  1685. draw

  1686. them

  1687. to

  1688. yourself

  1689. and

  1690. give

  1691. them

  1692. the

  1693. hope

  1694. of

  1695. Christ

  1696. this

  1697. morning
