  1. Amen. Well, you can please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to the book of Psalms.

  2. The book of Psalms. If you did not bring a Bible with you, that's okay.

  3. We have Bibles there in the seat back in front of you, and you're going to need one this morning.

  4. We're going to be flipping to several different places, because as I mentioned, I was not here last week,

  5. and so I'm preaching two Psalms this morning. I'm making up for lost time.

  6. We're going to do Psalm 14 and also Psalm 53, and we'll see the reason why, Lord willing, as we begin.

  7. But we're going to stand in honor of the reading of God's Word as I read Psalm chapter 14 this morning.

    Psalms 14 chapter mention

  8. Let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word.

  9. To the choir master of David, the fool says in his heart,

  10. There is no God.

  11. They are corrupt.

  12. They do abominable deeds.

  13. There is none who does good.

  14. The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand,

  15. who seek after God.

  16. They have all turned aside.

  17. Together they have become corrupt.

  18. There is none who does good.

  19. Not even one.

  20. Have they no knowledge?

  21. All the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the Lord.

  22. There they are in great terror.

  23. For God is with the generation of the righteous.

  24. You would shame the plans of the poor, but the Lord is his refuge.

  25. Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion.

  26. When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice.

  27. Let Israel be glad.

  28. This is God's holy word.

  29. Let's pray once more.

  30. Lord, we thank you for your word.

  31. Father, it is good.

  32. It is true.

  33. It is pure.

  34. And it is necessary for us even when it hurts.

  35. So we pray, Father, would you teach us this morning through your word.

  36. We pray in Jesus' name.

  37. Amen.

  38. You may be seated.

  39. Well, several years ago I was playing basketball outside.

  40. And I did what I had done a thousand times before.

  41. I shifted my weight onto one leg.

  42. And I went to jump off of that leg.

  43. But instead of going up into the air, my leg gave out on me.

  44. And I went down to the ground.

  45. And I lay there for a minute, but eventually got up.

  46. And I hobbled my way to the car.

  47. And I drove home.

  48. And I cleaned myself up.

  49. And I tried to convince myself that things were not as bad as it seemed.

  50. Maybe it's just a sprain.

  51. Maybe it'll get better.

  52. Well, a week or two went by.

  53. And it still didn't get better.

  54. The pain had gotten a little bit better.

  55. But it still didn't feel quite right.

  56. And I had to be careful how I moved, how I shifted.

  57. Because if I shifted just the wrong way, the pain would come back.

  58. And my leg would give out.

  59. But even still, I'm stubborn.

  60. So I refused.

  61. And I continued to try and convince myself I'm fine.

  62. Things will get better.

  63. Things will improve.

  64. It's not that bad.

  65. Well, eventually a couple of months went by.

  66. And Amanda, like a good wife does, gave me an ultimatum.

  67. She said, if it's not better, by X day, you are going to go to the doctor.

  68. And you're going to get this thing looked at.

  69. So the day came.

  70. Still, it was not any better.

  71. And so reluctantly, I went to the doctor.

  72. And he began to assess the damage.

  73. He began to shift my leg back and forth.

  74. He took my leg and my knee and shifted it all around.

  75. And then he scheduled an X-ray, which I knew was a waste of time.

  76. Because I knew there were no bones broken.

  77. But that's the next step in the process.

  78. So we did an X-ray.

  79. And when we confirmed there were, in fact, no bones broken, we scheduled the MRI.

  80. Which was to get a good look at what is going on inside of me.

  81. So we did the MRI.

  82. And eventually, once the doctor got his hands on the results, he called me back into the office to confirm what I had hoped was not the case.

  83. Things were worse than I thought.

  84. And they were worse than I had tried to pretend that they were.

  85. I had torn my ACL in my good knee.

  86. And now, now that I knew the truth of what was wrong with me, what was going on inside of me, now I would have to decide how we would go about fixing the problem.

  87. Let me tell you something.

  88. I did not enjoy that conversation.

  89. Nobody enjoys conversations like this.

  90. Nobody wants to hear what is wrong with us.

  91. Nobody wants to hear that things are worse than you thought.

  92. Or worse than maybe you're pretending that they are.

  93. But sometimes, you come across a passage in God's Word that functions like a truthful doctor.

  94. It tells us exactly what is going on with us.

  95. That's exactly what Psalm 14 does.

  96. Psalm chapter 14 is like an honest doctor with no bedside manner.

    Psalms 14 chapter mention

  97. It is direct.

  98. It is uncomfortable.

  99. It is honest.

  100. It is a straightforward diagnosis of a sickness, a condition that's going on not just in some people here and there, but in all people, in every single one of us.

  101. And what's the condition?

  102. The condition is that we are sinners.

  103. That we have, all of us, rebelled against a holy God.

  104. We have denied Him.

  105. We have rejected Him.

  106. We have become corrupt.

  107. We are sick.

  108. Nobody wants to have this conversation.

  109. Because we think that we're better off than we are.

  110. We try and convince ourselves that it's not so bad.

  111. But then passages like this come along and they show us the obvious truth of the situation.

  112. This is our diagnosis.

  113. And we see it in three parts this morning.

  114. Three parts.

  115. Here we see the foolishness, the lawlessness, and the pervasiveness of rejecting God.

  116. This will be our outline this morning.

  117. If you're taking notes, we're going to see the foolishness, the lawlessness, and the pervasiveness of rejecting God.

  118. And here's the payoff.

  119. If you can stick with me through the bad news, okay?

  120. And if you can stick with me through the uncomfortable bad news of our diagnosis,

  121. I promise you we will get to some good news of how we can fix it at the end.

  122. Okay?

  123. The first, rejection of God is foolishness.

  124. Rejection of God is foolishness.

  125. Look there to verse 1.

  126. He says,

  127. The fool says in his heart,

  128. There is no God.

  129. David says,

  130. Atheism is foolishness.

  131. And that's a fairly bold claim, isn't it?

  132. Because what it means is that many of our higher elites,

  133. academic professors and scholars, scientists, politicians,

  134. those who we might think would be the smartest and most elite among us,

  135. actually, David says, if they deny God, actually they are fools.

  136. Richard Dawkins,

  137. Niels Bohr,

  138. Alfred Nobel,

  139. Sigmund Freud,

  140. Carl Rogers,

  141. Stephen Hawking,

  142. some of the brightest, most intelligent,

  143. most influential minds in human history,

  144. according to David,

  145. have been fools.

  146. Why?

  147. Because although they study his creation,

  148. and although they live within his creation every day,

  149. although they have studied it,

  150. and in many ways understand it at a far deeper level than you and I probably ever will,

  151. they completely miss the message.

  152. Psalm 19 tells us that creation has a message.

  153. Creation speaks a message.

  154. Psalm 19 says,

  155. The heavens declare the what?

  156. The glory of God.

  157. The skies above proclaim his handiwork.

  158. Day to day pours out speech.

  159. Night to night reveals knowledge.

  160. There is no speech,

  161. nor are there words,

  162. whose voice is not heard.

  163. Their voice goes out through all the earth,

  164. and their words go to the end of the world.

  165. In other words,

  166. everyone has heard the voice of creation.

  167. Every single person who lives underneath the sky

  168. has enough evidence available to them day in and day out

  169. to know for a fact that there is a God who made the world and everything in it.

  170. If you live in creation,

  171. you have evidence of the existence and the glory and the creative power of God.

  172. So then the question becomes,

  173. well then,

  174. why don't all people acknowledge him?

  175. Why is it that so many people deny this God?

  176. If the evidence is so readily available,

  177. why do so many brilliant people deny him?

  178. Romans chapter 1 speaks to that question.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  179. Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  180. I want you to flip there with me,

  181. because we're going to come back to Romans here in just a minute.

  182. I want you to keep a finger there.

  183. We're going to come back there again in just a minute.

  184. But Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  185. starting in verse 18,

  186. Paul says,

  187. The wrath of God is revealed from heaven

  188. against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men

  189. who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

  190. Did you hear that?

  191. It is not that they don't know the truth.

  192. The heavens itself declares it.

  193. That's what Psalm 19 told us.

  194. But by their unrighteousness,

  195. they suppress the truth.

  196. They know that there's a God.

  197. And Paul says they know that there's a God.

  198. This is a shocking common knowledge

  199. that exists within every person on the planet.

  200. Paul says there's not a single person on the planet,

  201. Christian, atheist, or otherwise,

  202. who doesn't know deep down in their hearts

  203. that there is a God.

  204. They know it, but they suppress it.

  205. It would be ignorance to not know the truth,

  206. but it's foolishness to know the truth

  207. and to suppress it.

  208. Listen to this, verse 19 of Romans 1.

  209. He says,

  210. The fool says in his heart,

  211. There is no God.

  212. Atheism is foolishness.

  213. But I want you to look and notice back in Psalm 14

  214. where the fool says this.

  215. Where does the fool say that there is no God?

  216. It's not with his lips, is it?

  217. In Psalm 14, he's not saying this out loud with his lips.

  218. Where does he say it?

  219. It's in his heart.

  220. The fool says in his heart there is no God.

  221. This type of atheism goes deeper than just verbal atheism.

  222. This is a denying, a suppressing of the truth of God

  223. within your own heart.

  224. It's not just verbal atheism.

  225. It's as the English Puritan, Stephen Sharnock, would call it.

  226. He called it a practical atheism.

  227. Do you realize you can claim all the right things with your lips?

  228. You can acknowledge that there is a God with your lips

  229. and yet deny him in your heart.

  230. Do you realize this?

  231. You cannot be a verbal atheist,

  232. but you may be a practical atheist

  233. if you know there's a God

  234. and yet suppress the truth of his existence within your own heart.

  235. What could possibly cause someone to do something so foolish?

  236. What could possibly cause someone to suppress the truth of the existence of God

  237. and pretend like he doesn't even exist?

  238. The answer is our condition.

  239. It's sin.

  240. It's foolishness.

  241. Sin does not behave rationally.

  242. It is a sickness.

  243. Our sin, what it does is it turns us away from God and his glory

  244. and drives us instead to ourself.

  245. And not only we don't want what God wants,

  246. we want what we want.

  247. We don't want God's fame.

  248. We want our fame.

  249. And it's so much easier to pursue the passions of our flesh

  250. if we can convince ourselves that there is no God,

  251. that we're not accountable to anyone.

  252. This is foolishness, David says.

  253. The fool says in his heart there is no God

  254. and they are without excuse.

  255. Not only this, but second.

  256. Second, we see the result of this rejection.

  257. Second, this rejection of God produces lawlessness.

  258. Verse 1 says they are corrupt.

  259. They do abominable deeds.

  260. There is none who does good.

  261. In verse 4, David, he just throws up his hands.

  262. He says, have they no knowledge?

  263. All the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread

  264. and do not call upon the Lord,

  265. don't they know better?

  266. Why do they do the things that they do?

  267. David can't wrap his mind around all the wicked behavior that he sees.

  268. But look again and ask yourself,

  269. what is at the root of their wicked behavior?

  270. Why are they corrupt?

  271. Why do they do abominable deeds?

  272. It's because they have rejected the Lord.

  273. Rejection of God is at the root,

  274. is at the foundation of all lawlessness.

  275. All wickedness at the very foundation

  276. has at its root a rejection of God.

  277. Again, Stephen Sharnock, he says,

  278. all sin is founded in a secret atheism.

  279. Atheism is the spirit of every sin.

  280. Church, we have to remember this.

  281. When we look around at our culture,

  282. and we look around at our friends,

  283. when we look around at our family members

  284. who aren't believers,

  285. and when we just toss up our hands

  286. and we say, well, why are they acting this way?

  287. Don't they know better?

  288. Why are they doing the things that they do?

  289. We have to remember that external actions

  290. are just the symptoms,

  291. but the sickness is actually a rejection of God.

  292. David says,

  293. this denial of God has produced in them

  294. all sorts of corruption.

  295. They actively do abominable deeds,

  296. and at the same time,

  297. they do not do what is good.

  298. They actively pursue evil,

  299. and they resist doing good.

  300. This rejection of God has flipped everything upside down,

  301. and again,

  302. that's what sin does, isn't it?

  303. Sin is a foolish rejection of God

  304. that twists and distorts our desires

  305. and our ambitions,

  306. so that we hate what is good,

  307. and we love what is evil.

  308. So that we resist what is good,

  309. and we pursue what is abominable.

  310. So that we reject God and His glory,

  311. and we worship instead all sorts of false gods

  312. of our own making.

  313. And this is, again,

  314. exactly what Paul tells us in Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  315. Hopefully you still have your finger there.

  316. Romans 1.

  317. And we'll pick right up where we left off.

  318. Paul says,

  319. Those who reject God are without excuse for,

  320. verse 21.

  321. Listen to this.

  322. For although they knew God,

  323. that is in a general, intellectual way,

  324. they knew He was there.

  325. Although they knew God,

  326. they did not honor Him as God,

  327. or give thanks to Him.

  328. But they became futile in their thinking,

  329. and their foolish hearts were darkened.

  330. Claiming to be wise,

  331. they became fools,

  332. and exchanged the glory of the immortal God

  333. for images resembling mortal man,

  334. and birds,

  335. and animals,

  336. and creeping things.

  337. Therefore,

  338. God gave them up

  339. in the lust of their hearts

  340. to impurity,

  341. to the dishonoring of their bodies

  342. among themselves.

  343. Why?

  344. Verse 25.

  345. Because they exchanged the truth

  346. about God for a lie,

  347. and worshipped and served the creature

  348. rather than the Creator,

  349. who is blessed forever.

  350. Amen.

  351. Listen to this.

  352. Verse 26.

  353. Their women exchanged natural relations

  354. for those that are contrary to nature.

  355. And the men likewise gave up

  356. natural relations with women,

  357. and were consumed with passion

  358. for one another.

  359. Men committing shameless acts with men,

  360. and receiving in themselves

  361. the due penalty for their error.

  362. Verse 29.

  363. They were filled with all manner

  364. of unrighteousness,

  365. evil,

  366. covetousness,

  367. malice.

  368. They are full of envy,

  369. murder,

  370. strife,

  371. deceit,

  372. maliciousness.

  373. They are gossips,

  374. slanderers,

  375. haters of God,

  376. insolent,

  377. haughty,

  378. boastful,

  379. inventors of evil,

  380. disobedient to parents,

  381. foolish,

  382. faithless,

  383. heartless,

  384. ruthless.

  385. Though they know God's righteous decree

  386. that those who practice such things

  387. deserve to die,

  388. they not only do them,

  389. but give approval to those who practice them.

  390. Does this sound familiar to anybody else?

  391. Romans chapter 1 reads like America's obituary.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  392. How in the world

  393. could something written almost 2,000 years ago

  394. in a different country,

  395. in a different place,

  396. in a different time

  397. sound so familiar

  398. and so true to our culture

  399. right here and right now?

  400. I'll tell you.

  401. It rings true to us

  402. because

  403. this same sickness

  404. that existed in David's day,

  405. that existed in Paul's day,

  406. exists right here

  407. and right now

  408. in our day.

  409. What is it?

  410. It's the sickness

  411. of sinful rejection

  412. of God.

  413. Do you see the root issue here?

  414. At the root,

  415. at the foundation

  416. of every sinful behavior

  417. is denial

  418. and rejection

  419. of the glory

  420. of God.

  421. This rejection

  422. is the root cause

  423. of all sexual perversion.

  424. We deny God

  425. and we pursue

  426. the desires

  427. of our own flesh.

  428. It's the foundation

  429. of all greed

  430. and theft.

  431. We deny God

  432. and we worship money.

  433. It's the foundation

  434. of all covetousness.

  435. We deny the worth

  436. of God

  437. and we deny

  438. the satisfaction

  439. that can be found

  440. in Him alone

  441. so we crave more.

  442. We crave satisfaction

  443. in some earthly good,

  444. some bigger home,

  445. a better job,

  446. a nicer car,

  447. a dream vacation,

  448. whatever it may be.

  449. It's the foundation

  450. of rebelliousness

  451. in children.

  452. We deny the structures

  453. of order and authority

  454. God has given us

  455. and we all want

  456. to be God

  457. of our own world.

  458. Denial of God

  459. is the foundation

  460. of every evil pursuit.

  461. Are we in agreement?

  462. That's good.

  463. Because it's third point.

  464. Before we point our finger

  465. out at everybody else

  466. and shake our head

  467. at the sin in our culture

  468. and in our world

  469. and the sin of our neighbor,

  470. we have to realize

  471. point number three,

  472. rejection of God

  473. is pervasive.

  474. It's pervasive.

  475. In other words,

  476. it's not just a them problem.

  477. It's a us problem.

  478. It's not just an out there issue

  479. where other people

  480. are sinning

  481. and we are not.

  482. This is an us problem.

  483. Look there to verse two.

  484. Verse two shifts

  485. to the Lord's perspective

  486. on all of this.

  487. Look what he says.

  488. It says,

  489. The Lord,

  490. he looks down from heaven

  491. on the children of man

  492. to see if there are

  493. any who understand.

  494. If there are any

  495. who seek after God.

  496. And verse three

  497. gives us the answer.

  498. They have all turned aside.

  499. Together they have become corrupt.

  500. There is none

  501. who does good.

  502. Not even one.

  503. One.

  504. Let me tell you

  505. how we tend to read this.

  506. Our natural inclination

  507. is to read this

  508. and say,

  509. Yeah, I agree.

  510. It is terrible out there.

  511. Right?

  512. All those sinners

  513. out there.

  514. Why can't they

  515. get it all together?

  516. But look what it says again.

  517. It says,

  518. There is none

  519. who does good.

  520. None understand.

  521. No one seeks after God.

  522. Not even one.

  523. Not even me.

  524. Not even you.

  525. This is a universal issue.

  526. You and I

  527. and everyone else

  528. are all guilty

  529. of making the same

  530. foolish exchange.

  531. We are guilty

  532. of rejecting God.

  533. It's our very nature

  534. to do so.

  535. All we like sheep

  536. have gone astray.

  537. We have turned

  538. everyone to his own way.

  539. And that is exactly

  540. Paul's point

  541. in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  542. Flip there back with me

  543. again one last time.

  544. I've had us

  545. looking at Romans

  546. because Paul has been

  547. building up

  548. to this point.

  549. Paul quotes

  550. Psalm 14

  551. in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  552. He spends all

  553. of chapter 1

  554. illustrating

  555. the sinfulness

  556. of the nations,

  557. the Gentiles

  558. who have rejected God

  559. and who have followed

  560. their own passions,

  561. who have chased

  562. after idols.

  563. And he says,

  564. hey,

  565. we all agree

  566. that the judgment

  567. of God rightly

  568. falls on people

  569. who does stuff

  570. like that,

  571. right?

  572. We all agree

  573. that that's wrong

  574. and I just imagine

  575. all the Jews

  576. nodding their head.

  577. Yep,

  578. I get it.

  579. Yes,

  580. of course.

  581. How could they do that?

  582. They've rejected God.

  583. The judgment of God

  584. rightly falls on them.

  585. They deserve

  586. to be punished.

  587. And then Paul

  588. turns the tables

  589. on them.

  590. And he says,

  591. therefore,

  592. you have no excuses,

  593. oh man.

  594. Every one of you

  595. who judges,

  596. for in passing judgment

  597. on another,

  598. you condemn yourself

  599. because you,

  600. the judge,

  601. practice the very

  602. same things

  603. as it is written,

  604. chapter 3,

  605. verse 10,

  606. as it is written,

  607. none is righteous,

  608. no,

  609. not one.

  610. No one understands.

  611. No one seeks for God.

  612. All have turned aside.

  613. Together,

  614. they have become worthless.

  615. No one does good,

  616. not even one.

  617. In other words,

  618. church,

  619. this is our problem.

  620. This problem

  621. is universal.

  622. So he asks,

  623. well what then?

  624. Are we Jews

  625. any better off?

  626. I mean,

  627. surely we Jews

  628. are better off,

  629. right?

  630. Romans 3,

    Romans 3:9

  631. verse 9,

  632. no,

  633. not at all.

  634. You fill in the blank

  635. however you like.

  636. Whatever you think

  637. makes you superior

  638. to anybody else,

  639. you fill it in right there.

  640. What then?

  641. Are we Americans

  642. any better off?

  643. Any better off

  644. than the Iraqis

  645. or the Russians?

  646. Are we any better off?

  647. No,

  648. not at all.

  649. What about us Republicans?

  650. Are we better off,

  651. right?

  652. Surely,

  653. than the Democrats,

  654. right?

  655. No,

  656. not at all.

  657. Democrats,

  658. we're better off,

  659. right?

  660. We're better than the Republicans.

  661. Not at all.

  662. Why not?

  663. Because you,

  664. me,

  665. and everybody else

  666. all have sinned

  667. and fallen short

  668. of the glory of God,

  669. every one of us.

  670. Our sin nature

  671. is the great equalizer.

  672. we have to understand this,

  673. church.

  674. A rejection of God

  675. is a universal condition

  676. which ought to lead

  677. to a complete demolition

  678. of any streak of pride

  679. in our hearts.

  680. We are all in the same boat here.

  681. We can't read this

  682. and place ourselves

  683. in any group

  684. that we think

  685. is outside

  686. of this natural condition.

  687. We are not exempt.

  688. We gotta wipe our hearts clean

  689. of any idea

  690. of superiority

  691. to anyone else.

  692. Why?

  693. We all share

  694. this same

  695. natural condition.

  696. Jew and Gentile alike,

  697. Republican and Democrat alike,

  698. black,

  699. white,

  700. Hispanic,

  701. American citizen,

  702. illegal,

  703. alien,

  704. rich,

  705. poor,

  706. Auburn,

  707. Clemson,

  708. USC,

  709. University of Georgia.

  710. All of us are in this

  711. same broad category

  712. of sinners.

  713. That college too,

  714. whichever one

  715. you just mentioned

  716. right there.

  717. I didn't hear what it was,

  718. but you're included.

  719. We have all turned aside.

  720. Together,

  721. we have become corrupt.

  722. This is all of our problem.

  723. We have to start thinking

  724. in biblical terms.

  725. Understanding the world

  726. and everything in it,

  727. everyone else in it,

  728. and ourselves as well

  729. in biblical terms.

  730. This is hard.

  731. It's hard to shake off

  732. all the other things

  733. that try to determine

  734. our identity

  735. and our worth

  736. and to put us

  737. in buckets and categories.

  738. The Bible teaches us

  739. there are only two types

  740. of people.

  741. Only two types of people

  742. in the world.

  743. It's not us and them,

  744. whatever your definition

  745. of us might be.

  746. It is those who have been

  747. forgiven of their sin

  748. and those who remain in it.

  749. those who have been forgiven

  750. of our rejection of God

  751. and those who continue

  752. still to reject Him.

  753. Those who have been forgiven

  754. of our natural rebellion

  755. against the Lord

  756. and those who continue

  757. to rebel.

  758. understanding these two categories

  759. of people

  760. is absolutely crucial

  761. to understanding the Psalms

  762. and understanding

  763. what's going on here

  764. in Psalm chapter 14.

    Psalms 14 chapter mention

  765. We've seen it over and over

  766. and over and over and over again

  767. throughout the book of Psalms.

  768. There are only two types of people.

  769. You remember what they are?

  770. It's the righteous

  771. and the wicked.

  772. Look back there with me

  773. to Psalm 14.

  774. And once you're there,

  775. put a finger there

  776. and flip over to Psalm 53.

  777. This is why I wanted to preach

  778. two Psalms this morning.

  779. Psalm 14 and Psalm 53.

  780. I want you to make your way

  781. to Psalm 53

  782. and I want you to tell me

  783. if this sounds familiar

  784. at all to you.

  785. Psalm 53.

  786. Psalm 53 goes like this.

  787. The fool says in his heart

  788. there is no God.

  789. They are corrupt

  790. doing abominable iniquity.

  791. There is none who does good.

  792. God looks down from heaven

  793. on the children of man

  794. to see if there are any

  795. who understand,

  796. who seek after God.

  797. They have all fallen away

  798. and together they have become corrupt.

  799. There is none who does good,

  800. not even one.

  801. Have those who work evil

  802. no knowledge,

  803. who eat up my people

  804. as they eat bread

  805. and do not call upon God.

  806. Stop there.

  807. Does that sound familiar

  808. to you yet?

  809. These two Psalms

  810. are almost identical.

  811. Why are we repeating

  812. the same thing?

  813. Why is David going back

  814. and saying the same thing

  815. in Psalm 14 and Psalm 53?

  816. That's the question.

  817. And the answer is found

  818. in the one verse

  819. that's different.

  820. Psalm 53 and Psalm 14

    Psalms 14:5

  821. verse 5.

  822. There's only one verse

  823. that's completely different.

  824. Verse 5 of Psalm 53 says,

  825. There they are in great terror

  826. where there is no terror.

  827. For God scatters the bones

  828. of him who encamps against you.

  829. You put them to shame

  830. for God has rejected them.

  831. But Psalm 14 verse 5,

    Psalms 14:5

  832. you flip back there,

  833. it says,

  834. There they are in great terror

  835. for God is with the generation

  836. of the righteous.

  837. You would shame

  838. the plans of the poor,

  839. but the Lord is his refuge.

  840. Do you see the difference?

  841. Stay with me here.

  842. Do you see it?

  843. Psalm 53

  844. is God's response

  845. of judgment

  846. on the wicked.

  847. He says,

  848. You have rejected me,

  849. I have rejected you.

  850. That's what our sins deserve.

  851. We are at odds

  852. with a holy God

  853. and justice demands

  854. that our sins be dealt with.

  855. Psalm 53

  856. is God's response

  857. to the wicked.

  858. But look at the focus

  859. in Psalm 14.

  860. Psalm 14 says,

  861. You have rejected me,

  862. all have turned aside,

  863. and I will be your refuge.

  864. You are guilty,

  865. you are in the all here

  866. who have become corrupt,

  867. and yet I will shield you

  868. from what your sins deserve.

  869. You have denied me,

  870. I will call you righteous

  871. even though you're guilty.

  872. Two types of people.

  873. You see it?

  874. Again, Psalm 53 says,

  875. All have sinned,

  876. the wicked will be judged.

  877. Psalm 14 says,

  878. All have sinned,

  879. and God is with the righteous.

  880. How in the world

  881. do we understand this?

  882. The answer is found

  883. only in the gospel

  884. of Jesus Christ.

  885. Listen to this.

  886. The difference between

  887. these two people,

  888. the righteous

  889. and the wicked,

  890. is not whether or not

  891. you are guilty.

  892. We are all guilty.

  893. The answer is whether or not

  894. you are in Christ.

  895. Listen to this.

  896. The gospel is the bad news

  897. that all of us

  898. are guilty of rebelling

  899. against God,

  900. but it is the unthinkably

  901. good news

  902. that God

  903. pardons

  904. guilty sinners

  905. by punishing

  906. His own Son

  907. in our place.

  908. The gospel

  909. is the bad news

  910. that yes,

  911. we are guilty,

  912. every one of us,

  913. but it's the good news

  914. that Jesus Christ

  915. came for the guilty.

  916. It's the bad news

  917. that we're sinners,

  918. we are sick,

  919. we share this condition,

  920. we have all done

  921. abominable deeds,

  922. we have rejected God,

  923. we have become corrupt,

  924. but the good news

  925. is that Christ Jesus

  926. came into the world

  927. to save sinners

  928. of whom I am the foremost.

  929. The bad news,

  930. this psalm describes

  931. all of our fallen

  932. sinful nature,

  933. but the good news

  934. of the gospel,

  935. Christ Jesus

  936. came to give us

  937. a new nature.

  938. The bad news

  939. is that our sins

  940. deserve death,

  941. but the good news

  942. is Christ Jesus

  943. died for us,

  944. and more than that,

  945. rose from the grave

  946. and defeated death

  947. so that any sinner

  948. who turns from their sin

  949. and puts their faith

  950. in Christ

  951. can be made righteous

  952. and live forever

  953. in the sight of God.

  954. That's the gospel

  955. and it's our only hope.

  956. That is the cure

  957. for our condition.

  958. You know,

  959. our natural response

  960. to a text like this,

  961. to Psalm 14

  962. or Psalm 53

  963. is either to point the finger

  964. out at other people

  965. or to pretend like

  966. it's not so bad.

  967. And if you felt that tendency

  968. this morning to say,

  969. I'm not that bad.

  970. That doesn't describe me.

  971. Or if you read through this

  972. and you thought of somebody else

  973. and not of yourself,

  974. you've missed it.

  975. But if you hear this

  976. and you are pricked

  977. to the heart

  978. and you know

  979. that you're sick

  980. and you know

  981. that you've sinned

  982. against the Lord,

  983. I have good news for you.

  984. Jesus says,

  985. those who are well

  986. have no need

  987. of a physician

  988. but those

  989. who are sick.

  990. I came not

  991. to call the righteous

  992. those who think

  993. they're doing alright,

  994. but I've come

  995. to call sinners.

  996. God's word

  997. has shown us

  998. this morning

  999. that we are broken.

  1000. Now,

  1001. you can choose

  1002. to pretend

  1003. that it's better

  1004. than it is

  1005. and you can try

  1006. to deny it

1007. as long as you can.

  1008. You can walk

  1009. with a limp

  1010. or

  1011. you can cast yourself

  1012. totally,

  1013. helplessly,

  1014. completely,

  1015. confidently

  1016. into the arms

  1017. of Jesus,

  1018. the great physician

  1019. who came

  1020. to take

  1021. your sin

  1022. away.

  1023. And to give

  1024. you

  1025. his righteousness.

  1026. Here's the point,

  1027. church.

  1028. This is the thought

  1029. that I want

  1030. to leave you with

  1031. as we leave

  1032. this place.

  1033. Our sinful condition

  1034. is far worse

  1035. than we could

  1036. possibly think.

  1037. But the grace

  1038. of God

  1039. towards us

  1040. in Christ

  1041. is far greater

  1042. than we could

  1043. possibly imagine.

  1044. So what's our

  1045. response then

  1046. as we close?

  1047. Two-fold.

  1048. Two-fold.

  1049. Pray for salvation

  1050. and rejoice

  1051. in what God

  1052. has done.

  1053. This is how

  1054. David closes

  1055. this psalm.

  1056. Psalm 14,

    Psalms 14:7

  1057. verse 7.

  1058. He says,

  1059. Oh,

  1060. that salvation

  1061. for Israel

  1062. would come

  1063. out of Zion.

  1064. When the Lord

  1065. restores the fortunes

  1066. of His people,

  1067. let Jacob rejoice.

  1068. Let Israel

  1069. be glad.

  1070. Pray for salvation.

  1071. if you have

  1072. experienced

  1073. the saving

  1074. grace of God.

  1075. Pray,

  1076. pray,

  1077. pray,

  1078. and pray

  1079. some more

  1080. that the Lord

  1081. would extend

  1082. that same

  1083. saving grace

  1084. to others

  1085. around you.

  1086. How do we

  1087. expect to see

  1088. the Lord reach

  1089. this community

  1090. of all and all?

  1091. We desire to see

  1092. the Lord save

  1093. many in this

  1094. community,

  1095. don't we?

  1096. The way He's

  1097. going to do it

  1098. is through

  1099. your prayers

  1100. and through

  1101. faithful evangelism.

  1102. Pray

  1103. that the Lord

  1104. would save,

  1105. forgive,

  1106. and convert

  1107. even the most

  1108. unlikely,

  1109. most rebellious

  1110. sinner you know.

  1111. And pray for

  1112. salvation and pray

  1113. for the coming

  1114. day when the Lord

  1115. will return and

  1116. bring final and

  1117. total salvation

  1118. for all of His

  1119. people.

  1120. Not only this,

  1121. if you have

  1122. received the

  1123. grace of God,

  1124. rejoice in what

  1125. God has done.

  1126. rejoice and be

  1127. glad.

  1128. Christians of

  1129. all people

  1130. ought to be

  1131. full of joy

  1132. and gladness.

  1133. We of all

  1134. people ought to

  1135. be rejoicing.

  1136. Why?

  1137. Because we

  1138. have received

  1139. an eternal

  1140. inheritance that

  1141. none of us

  1142. deserve.

  1143. We've been

  1144. healed by the

  1145. grace of God

  1146. through the

  1147. gospel of

  1148. Jesus Christ.

  1149. Let's pray.

  1150. Lord,

  1151. Father,

  1152. we confess we

  1153. have sinned and

  1154. fallen short of

  1155. your glory.

  1156. There's not a

  1157. person in this

  1158. room who can

  1159. claim that we've

  1160. lived perfectly as

  1161. you desire.

  1162. Father,

  1163. we praise you

  1164. that you sent

  1165. Christ to live

  1166. in our place as

  1167. we should have

  1168. lived, to die in

  1169. our place as we

  1170. deserve to die,

  1171. and to rise from

  1172. the grave that we

  1173. might have certain

  1174. hope of eternal

  1175. life through

  1176. faith in him

  1177. alone.

  1178. God, we pray if

  1179. there are any

  1180. here who do

  1181. not know you,

  1182. Lord, would you

  1183. give them the

  1184. gift of salvation

  1185. this morning?

  1186. God, we pray

  1187. for salvation,

  1188. and we pray that

  1189. we would rejoice

  1190. in what you've

  1191. done.
