  1. Well, please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to the book of Daniel.

  2. The book of Daniel. If you're just joining us for the first time or the first time in a while,

  3. we are nine or ten weeks now into our series through the book of Daniel.

  4. And what we tend to do is work our way through books of the Bible.

  5. And so this morning we have come to Daniel chapter 9 and verses 20 through 27.

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  6. And here's my disclaimer, is this is one of the most difficult, one of the most mysterious,

  7. one of the most debated, at times one of the most divisive passages of Scripture.

  8. And you get to enjoy me struggling through it this morning.

  9. But what I pray is that we would be encouraged by the truths that we hear from God's Word this morning.

  10. If you didn't bring a Bible, that's okay. We have a few Bibles there in front of you.

  11. And I don't know who planned this as we go through these 77s in Daniel chapter 9,

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  12. but this can be found, our passage can be found on page 700 of those few Bibles there in front of you this morning.

  13. But let's turn there now, Daniel 9, 20 through 27.

  14. And when you found it, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word.

  15. While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel,

  16. and presenting my plea before the Lord my God for the holy hill of my God,

  17. while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first,

  18. came to me in swift flight at the time of the evening sacrifice.

  19. He made me to understand speaking with me, saying,

  20. O Daniel, I have now come out to give you insight and understanding.

  21. At the beginning of your pleas for mercy, a word went out,

  22. and I have come to tell it to you, for you are greatly loved.

  23. Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision.

  24. Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city,

  25. to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin,

  26. and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness,

  27. to seal both vision and profit, and to anoint a most holy place.

  28. Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem,

  29. to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks.

  30. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time.

  31. And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing.

  32. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.

  33. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war.

  34. Desolations are decreed.

  35. And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week,

  36. and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering.

  37. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate

  38. until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.

  39. This is God's holy word.

  40. Let's pray once more.

  41. Father, this is a difficult text, and we pray, Lord, I pray for wisdom.

  42. We pray for understanding.

  43. And if nothing else this morning, may Christ and the gospel be clear.

  44. We pray in Jesus' name.

  45. Amen.

  46. You may be seated.

  47. What is your hope?

  48. A few years ago, Amanda and I planned to take the boys to their first theme park.

  49. And we had been to a few different fairs and kind of pop-up carnival-type rides before,

  50. but we had never before spent an entire day at a theme park.

  51. And so we planned it all out.

  52. We bought the tickets.

  53. We'd even shown the boys some YouTube videos of rides that they could ride when they got there.

  54. And when we finally got there and got inside the park,

  55. I asked one of them, well, how many, excuse me, what ride would you like to ride first?

  56. And one of them looked up at me, I'll never forget, and he asked me, well, how many can we do?

  57. And it was a fair question because all that they had reference for before that moment

  58. was a ride or two here and there, cheap parents who don't want to buy too many fair and carnival rides for them to enjoy.

  59. They had no point of reference for a full day at the theme park

  60. getting to do whatever in the world they wanted to do.

  61. And so I'll never forget that conversation,

  62. that dawning realization on his face when he looked up and I got to explain to them,

  63. no, no, no, no, no.

  64. You have full access all day long to ride as much as you want,

  65. whatever you want to do.

  66. In that moment, they had their hopes expanded.

  67. They were being brought to an even greater experience of joy and delight

  68. than what they had previously thought was possible.

  69. We're here in our passage this morning in a similar way.

  70. I believe that this is what God is doing for Daniel.

  71. Daniel, you remember from last week and the week before,

  72. he has been praying and hoping and anticipating this return from exile into the promised land.

  73. Seventy years was the time that was almost up.

  74. Jeremiah had prophesied seventy years.

  75. The return was getting closer.

  76. And so we saw last week that Daniel prayed and he confessed

  77. and he sought the mercy of God to bring the people back to the land.

  78. And here in verses 20 and 23, God answers.

  79. Gabriel comes again to assure Daniel of God's love for him,

  80. to give him insight and understanding.

  81. And then what he shows Daniel is that, yes, 70 years is almost up.

  82. Everything that you're waiting for is about to happen,

  83. but that's not your ultimate hope.

  84. I have something even better in store for you.

  85. This passage is an expansion of Daniel's hope.

  86. So my prayer for us as we look into this difficult text this morning

  87. is that we would fix our hope on the promises made to Daniel here in these verses.

  88. So we'll take a look here at Daniel 9, verses 20 through 27.

    Daniel 9:20–27

  89. And we're going to see this in three parts this morning.

  90. I try to make it easy for you to follow along.

  91. Three parts this morning.

  92. If you're taking notes, this will be our outline.

  93. We're going to see the promise in verse 24.

  94. What is it that's being promised here?

  95. What is that better hope?

  96. We're going to see the process in verse 25.

  97. How is it going to happen?

  98. And then we're going to see the price in verses 26 and 27.

  99. What is it going to cost?

  100. First, what is the promise?

  101. Look there to verse 24 with me.

  102. Verse 24 serves as sort of the summary for the whole message.

  103. This is the main point.

  104. Gabriel says,

  105. 70 weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city.

  106. 70 weeks, the word literally there in the original is 77s.

  107. 77s.

  108. We'll get there to that in just a minute.

  109. But again, you remember Daniel's hope was in these 70 years.

  110. Right?

  111. A return from exile.

  112. And God answers this prayer by expanding that hope.

  113. Not just what God can do in 70 years, but in 77s.

  114. Let's look at what God promises.

  115. God makes six glorious promises here and what he will do in these 77s.

  116. Listen to this.

  117. Listen to this.

  118. God says,

  119. I will finish transgression.

  120. All evil, all sin, all rebellion will cease.

  121. All the transgression that got you here into exile in the first place will be gone.

  122. Done with.

  123. No more.

  124. I will put an end to sin.

  125. All sin will be totally wiped away from my people for good.

  126. As far as east is from the west.

  127. So far will I remove your sin from you.

  128. Sin will be totally done.

  129. All the effects of sin will be totally peeled back.

  130. Can you imagine that?

  131. I will atone for iniquity.

  132. I'm not only ending your sin.

  133. I'm going to pay for it.

  134. Full atonement.

  135. Which means full reconciliation with God.

  136. Full appeasement of God's wrath against sin.

  137. And I will do all of this.

  138. But not only this.

  139. Guess what?

  140. I will bring in everlasting righteousness.

  141. So they're not just cleaned up for a moment until they leave and then they go sin again the next hour.

  142. Everlasting forever.

  143. Everlasting forever.

  144. They're covered in this forever righteousness that cannot be removed.

  145. Cannot be stained.

  146. Cannot be lost.

  147. Cannot be tainted.

  148. This cycle of sin and judgment.

  149. Sin and judgment.

  150. Sin and judgment.

  151. Will be done.

  152. You will be righteous forever.

  153. I will seal up both vision and profit.

  154. Why?

  155. Because everything they've looked forward to will be fulfilled.

  156. They're no longer needed.

  157. Lastly, I will anoint a most holy place.

  158. Literally, a most holy one.

  159. In other words, not a place, but a person will be anointed.

  160. Well, who is that?

  161. It's the Messiah.

  162. Messiah.

  163. The Messiah.

  164. The anointed one.

  165. You cannot read this promise.

  166. This list of six glorious promises as a Christian and miss what's being held out here for us.

  167. Can you?

  168. This is the work of Christ.

  169. These are the promises of the new covenant in his blood.

  170. This is what the gospel of Jesus Christ has purchased for all of his people.

  171. God is laying out a plan of a much greater, much more glorious hope than a simple return from exile.

  172. This is the hope of the gospel.

  173. You know, if you've been with us for some time and you wonder why in the world we talk about the gospel so much.

  174. And why in the world we make such a big deal about the gospel.

  175. What makes the gospel such good news?

  176. Well, here it is.

  177. The gospel is the good news that all of these promises that God made to Daniel are available to you can be had right now through faith in the Messiah.

  178. Do you want to have your sins forgiven?

  179. Put your faith in Christ.

  180. Do you want everlasting righteousness that can't be messed up?

  181. Put your faith in Christ.

  182. You receive perfect righteousness.

  183. His perfect righteousness.

  184. You want to be sure and certain that your sins are no longer counted against you, but they are paid in full?

  185. Come to Christ.

  186. That's the gospel.

  187. These promises that God is making here are available to you now through faith in Christ.

  188. You cannot dream up a better hope than this.

  189. Christ, the anointed one, has come and has fulfilled every word that the prophets have spoken about him.

  190. And all of these promises, all of them, are available to you right now by the grace of God to be received by faith.

  191. That is a glorious hope, church.

  192. And here, God holds this out for Daniel as if to say,

  193. I love you, I hear your heart, I will answer your prayers, I will fulfill my word.

  194. Yes, I will bring you back to the promised land.

  195. But Daniel, that is not even a fraction of what I have planned for you.

  196. You want to go back to the promised land, that's fine.

  197. But Daniel, I'm promising you a new Eden.

  198. A better Eden that you can't ruin with your sin.

  199. You want to come out of your exile, that's good.

  200. But don't forget, your true exile didn't begin in 597.

  201. It began all the way back in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  202. You want freedom from your slavery?

  203. Well, guess what, Daniel?

  204. Your true slavery isn't slavery to the Babylonians.

  205. It's slavery to sin.

  206. And your ultimate hope is not the promised land.

  207. It's the promised Messiah.

  208. These promises, no sin, no judgment, no transgression, no more separation between God and man, everlasting righteousness.

  209. These are the promises of the new covenant.

  210. And again, this is where context is so helpful for us.

  211. Because you remember, last week, Treg drew this out for us.

  212. Daniel has been reading his Bible and he's been reflecting on two passages in particular, in Jeremiah and in Deuteronomy.

  213. You remember this from last week?

  214. He had read about the 70 years in Jeremiah 25.

  215. But it's as if God says,

  216. Keep on reading to the better promises of Jeremiah 31.

  217. I will put my law within them.

  218. I will write it on their hearts.

  219. I will be their God.

  220. They shall be my people.

  221. No longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying,

  222. Know the Lord, for they shall all know me from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord.

  223. For I will forgive their iniquity and I will remember their sin no more.

  224. He had read about the blessings and the curses of the covenant in Deuteronomy chapter 29.

    Deuteronomy 29 chapter mention

  225. But it's as if God says,

  226. Keep on reading to the better hope of Deuteronomy chapter 30,

    Deuteronomy 30 chapter mention

  227. where it says,

  228. The Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring,

  229. so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,

  230. that you may live.

  231. These are the promises of the gospel.

  232. And God says,

  233. Daniel, look there.

  234. Put your hope there.

  235. That is your ultimate hope.

  236. But how will it happen?

  237. What's the process?

  238. This is our second point this morning.

  239. Look with me to verse 25.

  240. We'll see the process.

  241. You know,

  242. A reasonable question for Daniel might have been,

  243. When?

  244. When?

  245. And Gabriel,

  246. amazingly,

  247. he answers that question,

  248. doesn't he?

  249. Except he doesn't say,

  250. Next Thursday at 12 o'clock.

  251. What does he say?

  252. He says,

  253. Seventy sevens.

  254. Seventy sevens.

  255. What in the world are we talking about here?

  256. Seventy sevens.

  257. Well,

  258. we're not told what these sevens are.

  259. In our translation,

  260. the ESV,

  261. it says 70 weeks.

  262. But again,

  263. what it literally says there is 77s.

  264. We are not told if these are sevens of years,

  265. or months,

  266. or days,

  267. or weeks,

  268. or if they're more theologically oriented

  269. than chronologically oriented.

  270. It is really not clear.

  271. All I know is I don't talk this way.

  272. And when somebody asks me what time our service starts,

  273. I don't measure in sevens.

  274. I don't say 10 sevens, 11 sevens.

  275. It's just not how we speak.

  276. But clearly,

  277. what we could say is,

  278. is these 77s,

  279. whatever they are,

  280. they're divided into three blocks of time.

  281. Seven,

  282. 62,

  283. and one.

  284. Verse 25,

  285. it says literally,

  286. it says,

  287. from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem

  288. until the coming of Messiah Prince,

  289. there will be seven sevens and 62 sevens.

  290. The first seven,

  291. it seems to be exactly what Daniel was praying for.

  292. A word was going to be sent forth to rebuild Jerusalem.

  293. This is good news for Daniel.

  294. This is what he's been hoping in.

  295. And we see,

  296. again,

  297. as we look back in the pages of history,

  298. if we look back to 2 Chronicles chapter 36,

    2 Chronicles 36 chapter mention

  299. that's exactly what happened.

  300. Cyrus makes a decree in 539,

  301. 538 B.C.

  302. to go,

  303. again,

  304. begin this rebuilding effort in Jerusalem.

  305. Now,

  306. I believe that Cyrus' decree is both the end of Jeremiah's 70 years

  307. and the beginning of Daniel's 77s.

  308. And again,

  309. this would be a huge relief for Daniel,

  310. wouldn't it?

  311. The city and the temple

  312. and with it,

  313. everything that he had hoped for and longed for

  314. was about to be rebuilt,

  315. even though,

  316. of course,

  317. he says it would be in a troubled time.

  318. And we see that story told for us

  319. in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah.

  320. But again,

  321. that's not where the story ends,

  322. is it?

  323. The Bible doesn't end with the books of Ezra and Nehemiah.

  324. The city and the temple will be rebuilt

  325. and it will remain for 62 more sevens.

  326. But,

  327. that temple

  328. and that city

  329. aren't the end of the story.

  330. They aren't the point of the story.

  331. What's the point?

  332. All of this is leading us forwards,

  333. pointing us forwards

  334. to what will happen

  335. after those 62.

  336. What's going to happen?

  337. The Messiah will come.

  338. The Messiah will come.

  339. God is orienting Daniel

  340. towards the coming of this promised Messiah.

  341. And what will he do when he comes?

  342. He will purchase

  343. all of these glorious covenant promises

  344. in verse 24.

  345. For all of his people.

  346. 69 sevens

  347. until the coming of the anointed Messiah.

  348. And that is the point.

  349. So God says,

  350. look there.

  351. Pay attention here.

  352. Look to these promises.

  353. This is where your attention needs to be.

  354. Seven sevens

  355. to get you back to the land.

  356. Then 62 more sevens

  357. until Messiah.

  358. That's where your focus

  359. needs to be.

  360. Like a kid on the way

  361. to a theme park

  362. on a road trip.

  363. He ought to be asking,

  364. well,

  365. are we there yet?

  366. Are we there yet?

  367. Are we there yet?

  368. When will Messiah come?

  369. How long are 69 sevens?

  370. And here,

  371. here we have to decide

  372. whether we understand these

  373. chronologically

  374. or theologically.

  375. In other words,

  376. are all these sevens

  377. meant to tell Daniel

  378. when he's coming exactly

  379. or what he's accomplishing exactly.

  380. And cards on the table,

  381. okay,

  382. I believe that it is

  383. the latter.

  384. Some,

  385. who I love

  386. and respect,

  387. take this to mean

  388. years.

  389. And they understand

  390. these sevens

  391. to be expressing

  392. a precise time

  393. in years.

  394. And so,

  395. seven sevens

  396. is 49 years

  397. and 62 sevens

  398. is 434 years

  399. and altogether,

  400. 70 sevens

  401. is 490 calendar years.

  402. But there's

  403. several reasons

  404. why I don't think

  405. that that's the best way

  406. to understand this.

  407. For one,

  408. again,

  409. there's nothing

  410. in the text

  411. to make me think

  412. we have to understand

  413. it that way.

  414. Seven sevens

  415. is what it says.

  416. It doesn't say

  417. seven sevens of years.

  418. On top of that,

  419. there really aren't

  420. any great calculations

  421. that get us

  422. from a proclamation

  423. to build Jerusalem

  424. and then to the Messiah

  425. in 483 years,

  426. although some get close

  427. but not exact

  428. and you do have to do

  429. some gymnastics

  430. to get there.

  431. But the biggest problem

  432. for me

  433. is what in the world

  434. do you do

  435. with that last seven?

  436. Because you and I both know

  437. it's been a little bit more

  438. than seven years

  439. since Jesus walked

  440. the earth,

  441. hasn't it?

  442. Going on almost

  443. 2,000 years now,

  444. in fact.

  445. Here's where

  446. in the name

  447. of literal interpretation,

  448. my friends,

  449. who again,

  450. I respect and love,

  451. they say,

  452. well,

  453. there must be

  454. a gap

  455. between the 69th

  456. and the 70th seven

  457. and that's a gap

  458. that's lasted

  459. for almost 2,000 years now

  460. and it's a gap

  461. that as hard

  462. as I look,

  463. I just,

  464. it's nowhere to be found

  465. in this passage.

  466. So all of this

  467. leads me to think

  468. that there is

  469. theological weight

  470. to these 70-7s.

  471. So what is it?

  472. Well,

  473. we hear,

  474. we hear seven

  475. and almost automatically,

  476. immediately,

  477. our mind should think

  478. of perfection

  479. and completion

  480. and Sabbath rest,

  481. right?

  482. But there's one more

  483. place in particular

  484. that I want us to look

  485. and if you turn there,

  486. it's fine,

  487. you can turn there,

  488. you can write it down

  489. to flip there later

  490. but I want you to turn

  491. to the book of Leviticus

  492. and this is why

  493. you don't skip Leviticus

  494. in your annual reading plan.

  495. I know that's the widow maker

  496. of our annual Bible reading plans

  497. but really,

  498. there's some good stuff.

  499. Leviticus chapter 25

    Leviticus 25 chapter mention

  500. and I'm just going to focus here

  501. on verses 8 through 12.

  502. Leviticus 25,

  503. 8 through 12.

  504. This chapter

  505. is about the jubilee year

  506. in Israel.

  507. Once they were

  508. to enter the promised land,

  509. they were told to count,

  510. listen to this,

  511. seven weeks of years.

  512. Seven times seven years.

  513. So that the time

  514. of the seven weeks of years

  515. shall give you 49 years

  516. and then

  517. you shall sound

  518. the loud trumpet

  519. on the tenth day

  520. of the seventh month.

  521. On the day of atonement

  522. you shall sound

  523. the trumpet

  524. throughout all your land

  525. and you shall consecrate

  526. that fiftieth year

  527. and proclaim liberty

  528. throughout the land

  529. to all its inhabitants.

  530. It shall be a jubilee

  531. for you

  532. when each of you

  533. shall return

  534. to his property

  535. and each of you

  536. shall return

  537. to his clan.

  538. That fiftieth year

  539. shall be a jubilee

  540. for you.

  541. In it you shall neither

  542. sow nor reap

  543. what grows of itself

  544. nor gather the grapes

  545. from the undressed vines

  546. for it is a jubilee.

  547. It shall be holy to you.

  548. You may eat

  549. the produce

  550. of the field.

  551. Now think about this

  552. with me.

  553. That would be

  554. a glorious celebration,

  555. wouldn't it?

  556. 49 years

  557. of anticipation

  558. and then the trumpet

  559. sounds.

  560. The slaves

  561. are freed.

  562. The land

  563. is renewed.

  564. The curse

  565. is peeled back.

  566. Daniel

  567. is looking

  568. at 77s.

  569. These 77s

  570. are 10 times

  571. that great jubilee

  572. celebration.

  573. 10 being a number

  574. of perfect completion.

  575. In other words,

  576. what God

  577. has planned

  578. with these 77s

  579. is the ultimate

  580. jubilee.

  581. The ultimate

  582. Sabbath rest.

  583. The ultimate

  584. deliverance

  585. from exile

  586. when the Messiah

  587. comes in

  588. to bring in

  589. all the promises

  590. of the new covenant.

  591. In other words,

  592. church,

  593. we are in

  594. the final seven.

  595. The Messiah

  596. has come,

  597. has inaugurated

  598. the kingdom of God.

  599. We belong to it

  600. in Christ

  601. and so now

  602. we await

  603. its final

  604. consummation

  605. at the sound

  606. of the final

  607. trumpet blast.

  608. The jubilee

  609. of jubilees

  610. at the return

  611. of Christ.

  612. There's

  613. much more

  614. to be said there

  615. than we have time

  616. to say it.

  617. Let's move on.

  618. How

  619. will these promises

  620. be secured?

  621. How will these promises

  622. be secured?

  623. What will it

  624. cost?

  625. Let's look there

  626. to verses

  627. 26 and 27

  628. and here we see

  629. the price

  630. that will be paid

  631. to secure

  632. this covenant.

  633. Gabriel says

  634. within this

  635. final seven

  636. which again

  637. began

  638. with the arrival

  639. of Christ

  640. he says

  641. two key events

  642. will happen.

  643. Two key events

  644. will happen.

  645. Look there with me

  646. to verses 26

  647. and 27

  648. and it's my

  649. understanding

  650. that these two

  651. verses

  652. they run

  653. parallel

  654. to each other.

  655. This is key

  656. for our understanding

  657. this passage.

  658. This will really

  659. help us

  660. get what's happening.

  661. It's not

  662. A, B, C, D

  663. it's A, B, A, B

  664. okay?

  665. It's not

  666. 1, 2, 3, 4

  667. it's 1, 2

  668. generally

  669. and then 1, 2

  670. a little bit more

  671. specifically.

  672. This is classic

  673. Hebrew parallelism.

  674. Verse 26

  675. is a little bit

  676. more general

  677. verse 27

  678. is a little bit

  679. more specific

  680. but they are

  681. speaking about

  682. the same

  683. thing.

  684. So let's look

  685. two key events

  686. what are they?

  687. They are the death

  688. of the Messiah

  689. and the end

  690. of the temple.

  691. The death

  692. of the Messiah

  693. and the end

  694. of the temple.

  695. So let me read

  696. them again

  697. look there with me

  698. to verse 26.

  699. He says

  700. after the 62 weeks

  701. an anointed one

  702. shall be cut off

  703. and shall have

  704. nothing.

  705. Death of the Messiah

  706. and the people

  707. of the prince

  708. who is to come

  709. shall destroy

  710. the city

  711. and the sanctuary

  712. its end

  713. shall come

  714. with a flood

  715. and to the end

  716. there shall be war.

  717. Desolations

  718. are decreed

  719. end of the temple.

  720. That's the general

  721. picture.

  722. Get more specific

  723. verse 27

  724. and he shall

  725. make a strong

  726. covenant

  727. with many

  728. for one week

  729. and for half

  730. of the week

  731. he shall put

  732. an end

  733. to sacrifice

  734. an offering

  735. death

  736. of the Messiah

  737. and on the

  738. wing of abominations

  739. shall come one

  740. who makes desolate

  741. until the decreed

  742. end is poured

  743. out on the

  744. desolator

  745. end of

  746. the temple.

  747. First event

  748. after 62

  749. weeks

  750. God says

  751. this Messiah

  752. prince

  753. will be

  754. cut off

  755. and have

  756. nothing.

  757. This is

  758. shocking

  759. language.

  760. The Messiah

  761. will be

  762. cut off

  763. and have

  764. nothing.

  765. The language

  766. here is

  767. describing

  768. a brutal

  769. death.

  770. This is the

  771. death of a

  772. lawbreaker.

  773. This is death

  774. penalty language

  775. but interestingly

  776. enough it's

  777. the same

  778. language

  779. that's used

  780. to make

  781. or to

  782. cut

  783. a covenant.

  784. In other

  785. words

  786. all of these

  787. promises

  788. of verse 24

  789. forgiveness

  790. of sin

  791. everlasting

  792. righteousness

  793. these covenant

  794. blessings

  795. are given

  796. freely

  797. to God's

  798. people

  799. but they

  800. cost

  801. something

  802. infinitely

  803. precious.

  804. They are

  805. secured

  806. by the

  807. cutting

  808. off

  809. the

  810. death

  811. of the

  812. Messiah

  813. to

  814. come.

  815. The

  816. Messiah

  817. is the

  818. one

  819. who

  820. shall

  821. make

  822. a

  823. strong

  824. covenant

  825. with

  826. many

  827. by

  828. his

  829. death.

  830. Just as

  831. Isaiah

  832. prophesied

  833. in Isaiah

    Isaiah 53:8

  834. 53

  835. verse 8

  836. what does

  837. he say?

  838. He was

  839. cut

  840. off

  841. out of

  842. the

  843. land

  844. of the

  845. living

  846. stricken

  847. for the

  848. transgression

  849. of my

  850. people.

  851. His death

  852. wasn't

  853. a

  854. defeat

  855. for the

  856. Messiah

  857. was it?

  858. Far from

  859. it.

  860. It's

  861. through

  862. this

  863. death

  864. that

  865. he

  866. secures

  867. or makes

  868. certain

  869. or makes

  870. strong

  871. a covenant

  872. for many.

  873. Isaiah

  874. 53

  875. again

  876. verse 11

  877. out of

  878. the anguish

  879. of his

  880. soul

  881. he shall

  882. see

  883. and be

  884. satisfied

  885. by his

  886. knowledge

  887. shall he

  888. the

  889. righteous

  890. one

  891. my

  892. servant

  893. make

  894. the

  895. many

  896. to be

  897. accounted

  898. righteous

  899. and he

  900. shall bear

  901. their

  902. iniquities.

  903. God

  904. has

  905. been

  906. promising

  907. Daniel

  908. this

  909. new

  910. covenant

  911. and he

  912. reminds

  913. Daniel

  914. this is

  915. your

  916. hope

  917. but how

  918. will it

  919. be

  920. accomplished?

  921. At

  922. great

  923. cost.

  924. What does

  925. Jesus

  926. himself

  927. say as

  928. he

  929. pours

  930. the wine

  931. into the

  932. cup

  933. and passes

  934. it from

  935. disciple

  936. to disciple

  937. to disciple

  938. what does

  939. he say?

  940. This

  941. is my

  942. blood

  943. of the

  944. covenant

  945. which is

  946. poured

  947. out

  948. for

  949. many

  950. for

  951. the

  952. forgiveness

  953. of

  954. sins

  955. in

  956. order

  957. to

  958. secure

  959. the

  960. covenant

  961. everlasting

  962. righteousness

  963. true

  964. sabbath

  965. rest

  966. atonement

  967. for

  968. sins

  969. God

  970. himself

  971. will

  972. pay

  973. the

  974. price

  975. and

  976. the

  977. son

  978. of

  979. God

  980. will

  981. be

  982. cut

  983. off

  984. for

  985. many

  986. and

  987. in

  988. doing

  989. so

  990. look

  991. what

  992. happens

  993. look

  994. what

  995. happens

  996. the

  997. Messiah

  998. will

  999. put

  1000. an

  1001. end

  1002. to

  1003. sacrifice

  1004. and

  1005. offering

  1006. can

  1007. you

  1008. imagine

  1009. Daniel

  1010. trying to

  1011. understand

  1012. all of

  1013. this

  1014. and

  1015. trying to

  1016. wrap his

  1017. mind

  1018. around

  1019. all of

  1020. this

  1021. Daniel

  1022. is a

  1023. faithful

  1024. Jew

  1025. he's

  1026. built

  1027. his

  1028. whole

  1029. life

  1030. around

  1031. this

  1032. sacrificial

  1033. system

  1034. this

  1035. system

  1036. of

  1037. law

  1038. and

  1039. sacrifice

  1040. his

  1041. whole

  1042. life

  1043. has

  1044. been

  1045. oriented

  1046. towards

  1047. the

  1048. temple

  1049. and

  1050. temple

  1051. worship

  1052. and

  1053. getting

  1054. back

  1055. to

  1056. the

  1057. land

  1058. he

  1059. couldn't

  1060. wait

  1061. to

  1062. get

  1063. back

  1064. to

  1065. the

  1066. land

  1067. and

  1068. get

  1069. back

  1070. to

  1071. the

  1072. temple

  1073. and

  1074. now

  1075. God

  1076. reminds

  1077. him

  1078. Daniel

  1079. there's

  1080. an

  1081. even

  1082. better

  1083. hope

  1084. than

  1085. that

  1086. ahead

  1087. of

  1088. you

  1089. the

  1090. fulfillment

  1091. of

  1092. the

  1093. temple

  1094. the

  1095. fulfillment

  1096. of

  1097. the

  1098. sacrifices

  1099. the

  1100. fulfillment

  1101. of

  1102. the

  1103. offerings

  1104. that's

  1105. coming

  1106. in

  1107. the

  1108. Messiah

  1109. Daniel

  1110. might

  1111. ask

  1112. well

  1113. what

  1114. does

  1115. that

  1116. mean

  1117. for

  1118. the

  1119. temple

  1120. what

  1121. does

  1122. that

  1123. mean

  1124. for

  1125. the

  1126. sacrifices

  1127. and here's

  1128. the answer

  1129. it means

  1130. they are

  1131. null

  1132. and void

  1133. the

  1134. death

  1135. of

  1136. Jesus

  1137. Christ

  1138. the

  1139. anointed

  1140. Messiah

  1141. is the

  1142. end

  1143. of

  1144. God

  1145. honoring

  1146. sacrifice

  1147. it is

  1148. the

  1149. end

  1150. of

  1151. God

  1152. honoring

  1153. temple

  1154. worship

  1155. why

  1156. because

  1157. the

  1158. ultimate

  1159. purpose

  1160. of the

  1161. temple

  1162. has been

  1163. fulfilled

  1164. the

  1165. ultimate

  1166. purpose

  1167. of this

  1168. whole

  1169. system

  1170. of

  1171. sacrifice

  1172. and

  1173. offering

  1174. was to

  1175. point

  1176. forward

  1177. towards

  1178. him

  1179. and now

  1180. that

  1181. he's

  1182. come

  1183. all of

  1184. these

  1185. shadows

  1186. and

  1187. pointers

  1188. can go

  1189. away

  1190. their

  1191. purpose

  1192. is

  1193. finished

  1194. he

  1195. has

  1196. offered

  1197. himself

  1198. as a

  1199. perfect

  1200. sacrifice

  1201. once

  1202. and for

  1203. all

  1204. we don't

  1205. need

  1206. any

  1207. more

  1208. sacrifice

  1209. praise

  1210. God

  1211. he

  1212. is

  1213. the

  1214. true

  1215. temple

  1216. we

  1217. don't

  1218. ever

  1219. need

  1220. to

  1221. have

  1222. another

  1223. temple

  1224. again

  1225. praise

  1226. God

  1227. in

  1228. fact

  1229. now

  1230. that

  1231. the

  1232. Messiah

  1233. has

  1234. come

  1235. any

  1236. idea

  1237. of

  1238. returning

  1239. going

  1240. back

  1241. returning

  1242. to

  1243. temple

  1244. worship

  1245. and

  1246. sacrifices

  1247. is an

  1248. idolatrous

  1249. abomination

  1250. in the

  1251. sight

  1252. of

  1253. God

  1254. there

  1255. is

  1256. a

  1257. new

  1258. covenant

  1259. to

  1260. enjoy

  1261. when

  1262. this

  1263. Messiah

  1264. was

  1265. cut

  1266. off

  1267. you

  1268. remember

  1269. what

  1270. happened

  1271. in

  1272. the

  1273. temple

  1274. the

  1275. curtain

  1276. of

  1277. the

  1278. temple

  1279. was

  1280. torn

  1281. in

  1282. two

  1385. came

  1386. and

  1459. of

  1460. God

  1461. he

  1462. was

  1463. cut

  1464. off

  1465. so

  1466. that

  1467. everything

  1468. that

  1469. he

  1470. has

  1471. earned

  1472. might

  1478. purely

  1479. by

  1493. what

  1494. did

  1495. it

  1496. cost

  1497. Daniel

  1498. and

  1499. his

  1500. people

  1501. it

  1502. cost

  1503. everything

  1504. that

  1505. they

  1506. based

  1507. their

  1508. identity

  1509. on

  1510. everything

  1511. that

  1512. they

  1513. held

  1514. sacred

  1515. everything

  1516. that

  1517. they

  1518. used

  1519. to

  1520. put

  1521. their

  1522. hope

  1523. in

  1524. they

  1525. had

  1526. to

  1527. let

  1528. that

  1529. old

  1530. hope

  1531. go

  1532. to

  1533. grab

  1534. a

  1535. hold

  1536. of

  1537. a

  1538. better

  1539. hope

  1540. what

  1541. will

  1542. it

  1543. cost

  1544. you

  1545. Christian

  1546. to

  1547. follow

  1548. Christ

  1549. it

  1550. will

  1551. cost

  1552. you

  1553. everything

  1554. else

  1555. you

  1556. might

  1557. base

  1558. your

  1559. identity

  1560. on

  1561. it

  1562. will

  1563. cost

  1564. you

  1565. everything

  1566. else

  1567. that

  1568. you

  1569. hold

  1570. sacred

  1571. apart

  1572. from

  1573. Christ

  1574. it

  1575. will

  1576. cost

  1577. you

  1578. everything

  1579. else

  1580. you

  1581. used

  1582. to

  1583. put

  1584. your

  1585. hope

  1586. in

  1587. that's

  1588. what

  1589. it

  1590. will

  1591. cost

  1592. I

  1593. wonder

  1594. what

  1595. that

  1596. is

  1597. for

  1598. you

  1599. I

  1600. don't

  1601. know

  1602. if

  1603. anybody

  1604. exemplified

  1605. this

  1606. lesson

  1607. more

  1608. than

  1609. the

  1610. apostle

  1611. Paul

  1612. he

  1613. was

  1614. the

  1615. ideal

  1616. Jew

  1617. he

  1618. had

  1619. it

  1620. all

  1621. going

  1622. he

  1623. had

  1624. reason

  1625. to

  1626. boast

  1627. in

  1628. the

  1629. flesh

  1630. it

  1631. was

  1632. Paul

  1633. but

  1634. what

  1635. does

  1636. he

  1637. say

  1638. in

  1639. the

  1640. book

  1641. of

  1642. Philippians

  1643. circumcised

  1644. on

  1645. the

  1646. eighth

  1647. day

  1648. of

  1649. the

  1650. people

  1651. of

  1652. Israel

  1653. of

  1654. the

  1655. tribe

  1656. of

  1657. Benjamin

  1658. a

  1659. Hebrew

  1660. of

  1661. Hebrews

  1662. as

  1663. to

  1664. the

  1665. law

  1666. of

  1667. Pharisee

  1668. as

  1669. to

  1670. zeal

  1671. a

  1672. persecutor

  1673. of

  1674. the

  1675. church

  1676. as

  1677. to

  1678. righteousness

  1679. under

  1680. the

  1681. law

  1682. blameless

  1683. but

  1684. when

  1685. he

  1686. came

  1687. to

  1688. know

  1689. the

  1690. Lord

  1691. what

  1692. happened

  1693. he

  1694. left

  1695. it

  1696. all

  1697. behind

  1698. to

  1699. grab

  1700. hold

  1701. of

  1702. a

  1703. better

  1704. hope

  1705. whatever

  1706. gain

  1707. I

  1708. had

  1709. I

  1710. counted

  1711. as

  1712. loss

  1713. for

  1714. the

  1715. sake

  1716. of

  1717. Christ

  1718. indeed

  1719. I

  1720. count

  1721. everything

  1722. as

  1723. loss

  1724. because

  1725. of the

  1726. surpassing

  1727. worth

  1728. of

  1729. knowing

  1730. Christ

  1731. Jesus

  1732. my

  1733. Lord

  1734. church

  1735. there is

  1736. no

  1737. greater

  1738. hope

  1739. than

  1740. Jesus

  1741. Christ

  1742. there is

  1743. no

  1744. greater

  1745. joy

  1746. than

  1747. knowing

  1748. him

  1749. there is

  1750. no

  1751. greater

  1752. freedom

  1753. than

  1754. knowing

  1755. that

  1756. your

  1757. sins

  1758. have

  1759. been

  1760. paid

  1761. in

  1762. full

  1763. and

  1764. that

  1765. you

  1766. have

  1767. received

  1768. by

  1769. the

  1770. grace

  1771. of

  1772. God

  1773. the

  1774. everlasting

  1775. righteousness

  1776. of

  1777. Christ

  1778. to

  1779. know

  1780. I

  1781. am

  1782. forgiven

  1783. he

  1784. has

  1785. come

  1786. he

  1787. has

  1788. died

  1789. in

  1790. my

  1791. place

  1792. and

  1793. not

  1794. only

  1795. this

  1796. he

  1797. has

  1798. risen

  1799. and

  1800. he

  1801. is

  1802. coming

  1803. again

  1804. to

  1805. usher

  1806. in

  1807. our

  1808. ultimate

  1809. hope

  1810. and

  1811. I

  1812. will

  1813. enjoy

  1814. him

  1815. forever

  1816. there is

  1817. no

  1818. greater

  1819. hope

  1820. than

  1821. the

  1822. hope

  1823. of

  1824. the

  1826. is

  1827. this

  1843. you

  1844. at

  1845. great

  1846. cost

  1847. church

  1848. do

  1849. not

  1850. settle

  1851. for

  1852. anything

  1853. less

  1854. let's

  1855. pray

  1856. Lord

  1857. there is

  1858. no

  1864. of
