  20. Philippians 3, verse 13-86.

  21. open our eyes to behold wondrous things out of your word.

  22. Lord, would you transform us in this moment as we meet with you.

  23. Now we pray in Christ's name. Amen.

  24. You may be seated.

  25. This morning I want to take you all the way back to the early church father, St. Augustine.

  26. St. Augustine. Many of you probably are familiar with that name,

  27. but you might not know that St. Augustine battled with all sorts of sin in the flesh.

  28. He wrestled especially with sexual sin,

  29. but he would tell you he wrestled also with pride and with greed and with gluttony.

  30. He wrote about his struggle in his book called Confessions.

  31. It's an honest portrayal of his battle with sin and then his eventual conversion to Christ.

  32. And here's what he said. He said, I was bound down by this disease of the flesh.

  33. Its deadly pleasures were a chain that I dragged along with me, yet I was afraid to be freed from it.

  34. In fact, he said that in his youth he used to pray,

  35. give me chastity and give me continency, only not yet.

  36. In other words, I want to be holy, I think.

  37. I want to be like you, I think.

  38. I want to follow you, I think.

  39. I want to obey you, I think, but not yet.

  40. Not until I'm done chasing after my sin.

  41. Christ, I want to be satisfied in Christ after I'm done being satisfied with the sins of my flesh.

  42. And maybe you've prayed something like that,

  43. or even if you haven't prayed that, maybe you've felt something like that.

  44. I want to get serious about the Lord at some point, but maybe not quite yet.

  45. Well, if that's you, you should know, not yet will never come.

  46. And the call of our passage this morning is a call from the Apostle Paul

  47. to follow Christ with all of your heart,

  48. all of your soul, all of your mind, all of your strength.

  49. This is a call to total obedience to Christ right now.

  50. So our passage this morning is, we see the call,

  51. and then Paul makes a case.

  52. The call to pursue total obedience,

  53. and then the case for why and how that's even possible for sinners like us

  54. to meet such a high calling.

  55. So first, let's see the call here.

  56. Look with me to verse 12.

  57. Paul says,

  58. We saw last week, over the past several weeks really,

  59. this call for Christians.

  60. We are called to lay down our lives

  61. in radical, selfless, humble, sacrificial love for others.

  62. You remember this from last week.

  63. Out of the example and the power of Christ Jesus for us,

  64. we are called to go and die for the good of others.

  65. Christ Jesus has humbled himself.

  66. He who is God has set aside this right,

  67. this divine right to become a servant of sinners.

  68. And now Paul says,

  69. You likewise, if you are in Christ,

  70. you go and serve others as well.

  71. So now in our passage today,

  72. he says,

  73. In light of this,

  74. in light of this example,

  75. and in light of the power of Christ's sacrifice,

  76. therefore,

  77. you go,

  78. work out your own salvation.

  79. Now what in the world does this mean?

  80. I'll tell you what it doesn't mean.

  81. It does not mean work for your salvation.

  82. Work to achieve your salvation.

  83. Our salvation is based on the finished work of Christ Jesus alone.

  84. Not a single one of us can work for our salvation.

  85. That's not what it means.

  86. Others have taken this to mean,

  87. well,

  88. work out whether you are saved or not.

  89. Find some evidence for your salvation.

  90. Determine whether or not you are actually a Christian.

  91. And I don't think that that's exactly what he means either.

  92. Although that application is here.

  93. Here's what I think he means.

  94. I think that in light of what he's calling them to do here

  95. in pursuing total obedience,

  96. he's calling them and us to work out your salvation,

  97. meaning to live it out.

  98. To work it out in your life.

  99. Show the outworking of what Christ has done in your life.

  100. Faith is invisible,

  101. but obedience is not.

  102. Faith is internal.

  103. It's invisible,

  104. but our obedience,

  105. our following Christ,

  106. the fruit of our salvation,

  107. is visible.

  108. And so he says,

  109. Christian,

  110. if you're in Christ,

  111. live it out.

  112. Work it out.

  113. Show the outwork.

  114. Let God's grace play out in your life.

  115. Pursue full obedience.

  116. Genuine faith,

  117. it has to be lived.

  118. It's got to be worked out in your life.

  119. A few places,

  120. a few references here.

  121. James,

  122. we know,

  123. tells us,

  124. faith without works is what?

  125. It's dead.

  126. If you say you have faith in Christ,

  127. but then that faith in Christ

  128. isn't paired with genuine pursuit of obedience,

  129. not perfect,

  130. not perfect,

  131. but genuine pursuit of obedience,

  132. something's not adding up here.

  133. John Calvin says,

  134. we're saved by faith alone,

  135. but the faith that saves is never alone.

  136. In other words,

  137. it's always paired with this outworking of our faith in our lives.

  138. One of the Lutheran confessions,

  139. it says,

  140. good works always follow justifying faith

  141. and are surely found with it,

  142. if it be true and living.

  143. For it is never alone,

  144. but always has with it love and hope.

  145. So Luther himself,

  146. he says,

  147. idle faith is not justifying faith.

  148. You hear the call here,

  149. don't you?

  150. This is a call to live out your faith in Christ,

  151. to show it,

  152. to work it out by pursuing full obedience.

  153. Paul says,

  154. work it out in your life.

  155. If you're a Christian,

  156. if you claim Christ,

  157. show it in your life,

  158. show it to be true,

  159. live it,

  160. walk in the good works

  161. that your Father's prepared for you beforehand,

  162. that you should walk in them.

  163. Let me see your progress

  164. and your joy in the faith.

  165. And not only while I'm there with you,

  166. he says,

  167. but also while I'm gone,

  168. I'm in prison,

  169. I'm not able to be there to oversee you.

  170. And that's the real test,

  171. isn't it?

  172. That's one thing to obey

  173. in the presence of some oversight.

  174. It's a whole other thing

  175. when you think nobody's there watching you,

  176. right?

  177. Maybe you've seen some of these videos

  178. of parents testing the obedience of their children.

  179. I think that this is cruel,

  180. okay?

  181. But they will set up a camera somewhere in the room.

  182. They'll put their children there

  183. in front of a big bowl of candy.

  184. And they'll sit there with them

  185. and they'll say,

  186. I gotta go take a call real quick.

  187. Don't eat any of this.

  188. And then they find an excuse

  189. to get up and leave.

  190. Camera's rolling,

  191. right?

  192. And they see whether or not

  193. their child will obey

  194. in the absence of their immediate oversight.

  195. Believers,

  196. Paul says,

  197. believers

  198. are to work out their faith.

  199. They're to live out their faith.

  200. They're to obey at all times,

  201. right?

  202. And with fear and trembling,

  203. not just because Paul cares about their obedience,

  204. but because we live our lives

  205. in the oversight of a sovereign God

  206. who loves us

  207. and calls us

  208. to constant pursuit of holiness.

  209. Church,

  210. how is this going for you?

  211. How is it going for you?

  212. What part of your faith

  213. needs to be worked out in your life?

  214. What are you struggling with obeying?

  215. What part of the Christian call

  216. seems difficult for you to put on?

  217. You know,

  218. Paul,

  219. he calls us to a high call here.

  220. It's not just things big

  221. and obvious,

  222. obvious sins to put to death,

  223. obvious things Christians ought to do.

  224. He applies this

  225. all the way down

  226. to the attitudes of the heart,

  227. even the way that we speak.

  228. Here at verse 14.

  229. Do all things

  230. without grumbling

  231. or disputing.

  232. How are we doing?

  233. I failed this morning.

  234. Multiple times.

  235. Do all things

  236. without grumbling

  237. or disputing.

  238. You know,

  239. we laugh at that.

  240. We think it's a small thing.

  241. We maybe roll our eyes at it.

  242. Why would Paul

  243. make such a big deal out of this?

  244. But let me tell you,

  245. even the slightest

  246. little bit of grumbling

  247. is sin

  248. that must be put to death.

  249. Especially when we think

  250. about the effect

  251. that it can have

  252. on a church family.

  253. Now you remember Paul's goal

  254. here.

  255. He's writing.

  256. He's fighting.

  257. He's urging them

  258. to pursue unity

  259. in the church,

  260. to work together,

  261. to link arms together.

  262. He wants to see them

  263. have joy in the church

  264. and unity.

  265. The slightest

  266. little bit of grumbling

  267. will disrupt

  268. the unity of the church.

  269. Before a church

  270. burns down

  271. in a bonfire,

  272. a bonfire of disunity,

  273. you know where it starts,

  274. church?

  275. The slightest little flicker

  276. of a grumble.

  277. The slightest little argument

  278. that never gets dealt with.

  279. The slightest little bit

  280. of friction

  281. that we just let time go by

  282. and we'll never handle it.

  283. Paul says,

  284. no, no, no, no, no.

  285. Let everything you do

  286. be done without grumbling

  287. or disputing.

  288. All the way down

  289. to the slightest grumble.

  290. We have to put our sin

  291. to death.

  292. This is a call

  293. to total obedience

  294. to Christ.

  295. And that's a high call,

  296. is it not?

  297. So now let's turn

  298. our attention

  299. to the case.

  300. The case.

  301. Because Paul never leaves

  302. it just as an empty command.

  303. He never does.

  304. He anticipates

  305. that we're going to ask,

  306. well, how do I do that?

  307. Why should I do that?

  308. What's the reason

  309. why we're called

  310. to live like that?

  311. How can sinners like us

  312. even begin

  313. to put sin to death?

  314. And he gives us

  315. three parts here

  316. to this case.

  317. And I'm going to work it

  318. backwards from the bottom up.

  319. Okay?

  320. So why pursue

  321. full obedience?

  322. First reason is,

  323. this is Paul's aim

  324. as your brother.

  325. Philippians,

  326. why do all things

  327. without grumbling

  328. or complaining?

  329. Well, Paul says,

  330. this is what I want for you.

  331. This is why I labored for you.

  332. This is my aim

  333. as your brother.

  334. This is why I'm laying

  335. down my life for you.

  336. This is,

  337. to say it more broadly,

  338. this is the aim

  339. of Christian ministry.

  340. My aim for you,

  341. church,

  342. is not just that

  343. I would see you

  344. come to faith in Christ

  345. and then stay there

  346. as a baby Christian.

  347. Never grow up.

  348. My aim is to see

  349. Christ fully formed

  350. in you.

  351. I want to see you

  352. grow as disciples

  353. of Christ.

  354. I want to see you

  355. progress in maturity.

  356. And none of us

  357. will ever reach

  358. full maturity

  359. until glory.

  360. But we all have

  361. a next step

  362. that we can take

  363. in putting sin to death

  364. and pursuing full obedience.

  365. This is the aim

  366. of Christian ministry.

  367. He says he wants them

  368. to approve

  369. what's excellent

  370. and so be pure

  371. and blameless

  372. for the day of Christ.

  373. Filled with the fruit

  374. of righteousness

  375. that comes through

  376. Jesus Christ

  377. to the glory

  378. and praise of God.

  379. That's chapter 1

  380. verses 10 and 11.

  381. He says in chapter 4,

  382. what you've learned

  383. and received

  384. and heard

  385. and seen in me,

  386. practice these things.

  387. Practice these things.

  388. How much practice

  389. does it take

  390. to go and grumble

  391. and complain?

  392. We don't need

  393. to practice that,

  394. do we?

  395. That comes naturally.

  396. I've got to share

  397. the story.

  398. I was one of my boys

  399. who I will not tell you

  400. which one

  401. was playing a game.

  402. He was pretending.

  403. He was in front

  404. of a mirror

  405. and he was yelling

  406. at that guy

  407. in the mirror

  408. because he was copying him.

  409. Stop copying me.

  410. You're imitating me.

  411. Stop it.

  412. Cut it out.

  413. Cut it out.

  414. I said,

  415. you know what, son?

  416. Maybe if you would

  417. just ask him nicely,

  418. he might calm down too.

  419. You don't have to practice

  420. yelling and grumbling

  421. and arguing.

  422. That comes naturally.

  423. We've got to practice

  424. these things.

  425. We've got to practice

  426. holiness.

  427. We've got to practice

  428. making peace

  429. with one another.

  430. Full obedience

  431. is the goal

  432. of Paul's ministry.

  433. Romans 1.

  434. He says,

  435. he received grace

  436. and apostleship.

  437. Why?

  438. To bring about

  439. the obedience

  440. of faith

  441. for the sake

  442. of his name

  443. among all the nations.

  444. It's faith

  445. and it's the

  446. outworking of faith.

  447. That's his goal.

  448. We go to Matthew 28.

  449. Back it all the way up

  450. to the Great Commission

  451. and see,

  452. what did Jesus

  453. command his disciples?

  454. What's the mission

  455. of the church?

  456. Go and make disciples

  457. of all nations,

  458. baptizing them

  459. in the name

  460. of the Father

  461. and the Son

  462. and the Holy Spirit

  463. and teaching them

  464. to what?

  465. To obey

  466. most of what

  467. I commanded you.

  468. everything

  469. to obey all

  470. that I have

  471. commanded you.

  472. This is Paul's goal.

  473. In fact,

  474. he says,

  475. I'd be willing

  476. to die for this.

  477. Even if I'm going

  478. to be poured out

  479. as a sacrificial offering,

  480. as a sacrificial offering

  481. of your faith,

  482. I'm glad

  483. and will rejoice

  484. with you all.

  485. I will give my life,

  486. he says,

  487. for your progress

  488. and joy

  489. in the faith.

  490. We see this

  491. all over Scripture.

  492. I want to take you

  493. to one more place

  494. where maybe you haven't

  495. considered the connection

  496. here.

  497. It's to Jesus'

  498. parable of the sower.

  499. You know the story.

  500. The parable of the sower.

  501. He shares this parable

  502. in Luke chapter 8.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  503. He shares it in several

  504. of the Gospels.

  505. Luke chapter 8,

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  506. starting in verse 5,

  507. he says this,

  508. A sower went out

  509. to sow his seed

  510. and as he sowed,

  511. some fell along the path

  512. and was trampled underfoot

  513. and the birds of the air

  514. devoured it

  515. and some fell on the rock

  516. and as it grew up

  517. it withered away

  518. because it had no moisture.

  519. Some fell among thorns

  520. and the thorns grew up

  521. with it and choked it

  522. and some fell into good soil

  523. and that soil grew

  524. and it yielded a hundredfold

  525. and as he said these things,

  526. he called out,

  527. He who has ears to hear,

  528. let him hear.

  529. He explains it

  530. down in verse 11.

  531. He says,

  532. Now the parable is this,

  533. the seed is the word of God.

  534. The ones along the path

  535. are those who have heard

  536. and then the devil comes

  537. and he takes away

  538. the word from their hearts

  539. so that they may not believe

  540. and be saved.

  541. And the ones on the rock

  542. are those who

  543. when they hear the word

  544. they receive it with joy

  545. but these have no root.

  546. They believe for a while

  547. and then at the time

  548. a testing comes

  549. and they fall away.

  550. As for what fell

  551. among the thorns,

  552. they are those

  553. who hear the word

  554. but as they go on their way

  555. they are choked

  556. by the cares

  557. and the riches

  558. and the pleasures of life

  559. and their fruit

  560. does not mature.

  561. But there's another category.

  562. Verse 15.

  563. As for that

  564. in the good soil,

  565. they are those

  566. who hearing the word

  567. hold it fast

  568. in an honest

  569. and good heart

  570. and bear fruit

  571. with patience.

  572. church,

  573. I'm sad to say

  574. that

  575. I have seen

  576. every single one

  577. of these categories

  578. play out.

  579. And Paul knows

  580. that there is

  581. such a thing

  582. as a false

  583. profession of faith.

  584. There is such a thing

  585. as someone

  586. who says

  587. I believe,

  588. I want to

  589. know Christ

  590. and then

  591. for whatever reason

  592. time goes by

  593. the cares of the world

  594. choke it out.

  595. The enemy

  596. takes it away.

  597. They're distracted

  598. by something

  599. and there is no fruit,

  600. no obedience,

  601. no life in Christ.

  602. It is snuffed

  603. out completely.

  604. And so Paul says

  605. my desire for you

  606. Philippians

  607. is that you not

  608. just receive the word

  609. for a minute

  610. and then it's gone.

  611. And that you fall away.

  612. He says

  613. my desire,

  614. I want to be able

  615. to look at you

  616. in the day of Christ

  617. and be proud

  618. that I didn't waste

  619. my time ministering

  620. to you.

  621. I want to be proud

  622. in the day of Christ

  623. that you are fully

  624. formed in him.

  625. That on that day

  626. when every knee

  627. will bow

  628. and every tongue

  629. confess that Christ

  630. is Lord,

  631. I'll look at you

  632. and see that you're

  633. ready to receive him

  634. as king.

  635. My aim,

  636. my goal

  637. in my ministry

  638. is that when he comes

  639. you will be standing

  640. there ready

  641. in the day of Christ.

  642. That's his aim.

  643. How will they do it?

  644. Church,

  645. how will you do it?

  646. How will you

  647. make sure

  648. that the cares

  649. of the world

  650. don't snuff it out?

  651. How will you

  652. make sure

  653. that the temptations

  654. of the enemy

  655. don't draw you astray?

  656. What does he say?

  657. Hold fast

  658. to the word

  659. of life.

  660. Hold fast

  661. to the word

  662. of life.

  663. How does a gospel

  664. minister make sure

  665. his church is growing

  666. even when he's not

  667. there to see it,

  668. to help him,

  669. to minister to him?

  670. He says,

  671. you have the word.

  672. Hold fast

  673. to the word

  674. of life.

  675. This is Paul's aim

  676. in his ministry,

  677. not only this.

  678. Second,

  679. full obedience

  680. is meant to be

  681. your aim

  682. as God's child.

  683. Meant to be your aim

  684. as God's child.

  685. Look there with me

  686. to verse 14 again.

  687. He says,

  688. do all things

  689. without grumbling

  690. or disputing

  691. that you may be

  692. blameless and innocent

  693. children of God

  694. without blemish

  695. in the midst

  696. of a crooked

  697. and twisted generation

  698. among whom you shine

  699. as lights

  700. in the world.

  701. Here's the idea,

  702. church.

  703. Our identity

  704. shapes

  705. our actions.

  706. Our identity

  707. shapes

  708. our behaviors.

  709. Our identity

  710. shapes our thoughts

  711. and the way

  712. we go about

  713. our life.

  714. If we see ourselves

  715. as part of this world,

  716. as belonging

  717. to this world,

  718. guess what you're

  719. going to act like?

  720. You're going to act

  721. just like this world.

  722. Paul says,

  723. you,

  724. by the grace of God,

  725. have been brought

  726. out of belonging

  727. to this world.

  728. That's what it means

  729. to be a Christian.

  730. You realize this,

  731. right?

  732. To be a Christian

  733. means that by the grace

  734. of God,

  735. you have been given

  736. faith in Christ

  737. and with that faith

  738. in Christ,

  739. you've been given

  740. a new identity

  741. in Christ.

  742. You've been adopted

  743. out of belonging

  744. to this world.

  745. You've been adopted

  746. now as a son

  747. or a daughter

  748. of the living God.

  749. So you're no longer

  750. a part of this crooked

  751. and twisted generation.

  752. You are a part

  753. of the family

  754. of God.

  755. We all know

  756. that any parent

  757. in the room

  758. understands this,

  759. right?

  760. Your children

  761. come to you,

  762. maybe they see

  763. something that

  764. they see somebody

  765. else doing

  766. that they want

  767. to do

  768. or in my family

  769. it's normally

  770. they see somebody

  771. else eating

  772. something that

  773. they want to eat

  774. and so they come

  775. and they say,

  776. well,

  777. dad,

  778. but so and so

  779. is doing it.

  780. So and so

  781. gets to eat

  782. that dessert

  783. and what's my

  784. response?

  785. It's dad.

  786. They're not my

  787. child.

  788. You're my child

  789. and as my child

  790. I expect you

  791. to follow my rules

  792. and I expect you

  793. to obey me

  794. as your father.

  795. You're not a part

  796. of their family.

  797. You're a part

  798. of my family

  799. and so God

  800. says,

  801. as my child

  802. as my child

  803. shine as lights

  804. in the world

  805. in the midst

  806. of a crooked

  807. and twisted generation.

  808. You know how normal

  809. it is to grumble,

  810. church?

  811. You know how normal

  812. it is to hear

  813. grumbling

  814. and conversations?

  815. I mean,

  816. you turn on the TV

  817. it doesn't matter

  818. what station,

  819. right?

  820. Politics,

  821. you turn on TV

  822. Fox News,

  823. CNN,

  824. MSNBC,

  825. it doesn't matter

  826. what station it is,

  827. what do you hear?

  828. You hear grumbling

  829. and disputing,

  830. don't you?

  831. You turn on sports,

  832. ESPN,

  833. what do you hear?

  834. You hear grumbling.

  835. I'm about to grumble

  836. about this.

  837. I wasn't going

  838. to say anything

  839. but now I can't

  840. get it out of my head.

  841. All you hear

  842. is grumbling

  843. and disputing.

  844. You can't get away

  845. from it.

  846. You turn on the radio

  847. on the way to work,

  848. what do you hear?

  849. You hear grumbling,

  850. you hear disputing,

  851. you hear arguing.

  852. God says,

  853. not my children.

  854. Not my children.

  855. You belong to me.

  856. The way that we speak,

  857. the way that we act,

  858. the way that we live,

  859. the way that we treat

  860. one another,

  861. the way that we serve

  862. one another,

  863. honors God our Father

  864. when we do it like Christ.

  865. Meant to be our aim

  866. as God's children

  867. but not only this.

  868. Third,

  869. third and finally,

  870. pursue full obedience

  871. because this is God's aim

  872. as your Savior.

  873. This is God's aim

  874. as your Savior.

  875. You realize I have,

  876. I've spent this whole time

  877. telling you what to do

  878. but I haven't given you

  879. power to do it yet.

  880. Here it is.

  881. Look there again

  882. to verse 13.

  883. Actually,

  884. let me back up

  885. to verse 12.

  886. Again,

  887. the command is,

  888. therefore my beloved

  889. as you have always obeyed,

  890. so now,

  891. not only as in my presence

  892. but much more in my absence,

  893. work out your own salvation

  894. with fear and trembling.

  895. For,

  896. verse 13,

  897. for,

  898. here's the basis,

  899. here's the power,

  900. for,

  901. it is God who works in you

  902. both to will

  903. and to work

  904. for His good pleasure.

  905. Here's the good news

  906. for sinners

  907. and for failures

  908. and for strugglers,

  909. those of us

  910. who are struggling

  911. to live the Christian life.

  912. Here's some really good news

  913. for you this morning.

  914. The power

  915. for the Christian life

  916. from beginning to end

  917. comes from God.

  918. You can't do it.

  919. The power

  920. to put grumbling

  921. to death

  922. cannot come from us.

  923. You can't do it.

  924. If all you hear

  925. this morning

  926. is try harder,

  927. be better,

  928. you've missed it.

  929. You can't do it.

  930. It's God

  931. who works in you

  932. to will

  933. and to work

  934. for His good pleasure.

  935. Paul says work.

  936. Paul says obey.

  937. Paul says pursue

  938. full obedience.

  939. Why?

  940. Because it's God

  941. who works it in you.

  942. This verse is just

  943. absolutely stunning

  944. and it's really

  945. not hard to understand

  946. if we just read it

  947. simply

  948. and so that's what

  949. I'm going to try

  950. to do here, okay?

  951. He tells us

  952. both our working

  953. and our willing

  954. is from God.

  955. Isn't that what he says?

  956. Both our working

  957. and our willing

  958. is from God.

  959. He says your working

  960. is from God.

  961. All the bearing fruit,

  962. all the putting sin

  963. to death,

  964. all the loving

  965. your brother,

  966. all the holding

  967. your tongue

  968. when you want

  969. to grumble

  970. and complain,

  971. all the counting

  972. others more significant

  973. than yourselves.

  974. Where does that

  975. power come from?

  976. Only from God.

  977. It's God

  978. who works it in you,

  979. Paul says.

  980. It's like when I

  981. want to build something

  982. or have some project

  983. I'm doing at the house.

  984. Maybe I'm hanging blinds

  985. or maybe I'm building

  986. a table

  987. and I say,

  988. son,

  989. come build this table

  990. with me.

  991. What are they going

  992. to say?

  993. I can't do that.

  994. I can't do that.

  995. I say,

  996. you just hold this drill

  997. and I put it in their hands

  998. and my hands

  999. go on top of his hands

  1000. and together

  1001. we place the bit

  1002. into the screw

  1003. and then together

  1004. with my fingers

1005. on top of his fingers

  1006. together we drive

  1007. in that screw

  1008. into the wood

  1009. and I use some

  1010. of my dad's strength

1011. to get it in there

1012. because he can't do it

  1013. on his own

  1014. and then it's done

  1015. and he leaves

  1016. and says,

  1017. guess what?

  1018. I built a table.

  1019. Yeah, you did.

1020. But it was the Father.

  1021. The Father's work

  1022. in you.

  1023. And when a Christian

  1024. say they hear

  1025. God's command

  1026. go and share

  1027. the gospel

  1028. with your neighbor

  1029. and go bring

  1030. this word of life

  1031. to somebody

  1032. who doesn't know it

  1033. and so they work

  1034. up the courage.

  1035. They take a risk.

  1036. They have this gospel

  1037. conversation with somebody

  1038. that doesn't know Jesus

  1039. and they put themselves

  1040. out there

  1041. for some social rejection.

  1042. They say,

1043. this is the only way

  1044. a sinner is saved

1045. is by faith in Christ

  1046. and that person responds

  1047. and says,

  1048. you know,

  1049. I want to hear

  1050. some more about that.

  1051. They go home rejoicing

1052. at what God has done

  1053. in and through them.

  1054. It's God who works

  1055. in you to work

  1056. for his good pleasure

  1057. but not only that.

  1058. Paul says,

  1059. even your willing

  1060. is from God.

  1061. Here's where my analogy

1062. breaks down a little bit,

  1063. right?

  1064. Because I can't change

  1065. anybody's will.

  1066. Paul can't change

  1067. anybody's will.

1068. I can make my son

1069. come and do what I ask.

1070. I can kind of force

  1071. some obedience

  1072. but I cannot change

  1073. the human will.

  1074. But here,

  1075. Paul again,

  1076. plainly,

  1077. he says,

  1078. God works in you

  1079. to will

  1080. for his good pleasure.

  1081. Now,

1082. this is a little bit

  1083. controversial,

  1084. isn't it?

  1085. You get into

  1086. conversations about

  1087. human will

  1088. and free will

  1089. and God's sovereignty

  1090. and everybody starts

1091. to get a little bit tense

  1092. and so,

  1093. y'all just take a deep breath.

  1094. Okay?

  1095. Again,

1096. my goal is to make

  1097. scripture be plain.

  1098. Paul says,

  1099. it is God

  1100. who works in you

  1101. to will

  1102. and to work

  1103. for his good pleasure.

  1104. That doesn't mean

  1105. that we don't make

  1106. a choice.

  1107. Of course not.

  1108. You're involved

  1109. in the choices

  1110. you make

  1111. but we make choices,

  1112. we need to know

  1113. we make choices

  1114. in accordance

  1115. with our nature

  1116. and by nature.

  1117. Sinners outside

  1118. of Christ

  1119. are dead

  1120. in the trespasses

  1121. and sins.

  1122. We're spiritually

  1123. dead.

  1124. We're unable

  1125. to will

  1126. the will of God.

  1127. Spiritually dead

  1128. sinners cannot

  1129. desire God.

  1130. Those who are

  1131. in the flesh,

  1132. Paul says

  1133. in Romans 8,

  1134. cannot please God.

  1135. We're not neutral

  1136. towards him either.

  1137. We're hostile

  1138. towards God

  1139. in the flesh.

  1140. Those who are

  1141. in the flesh

  1142. cannot please God,

  1143. he says.

  1144. The mind that's

  1145. set on the flesh

  1146. is hostile to God.

  1147. It does not submit

  1148. to God's law.

  1149. Indeed,

  1150. it cannot.

  1151. Martin Luther,

  1152. he says that

  1153. the human will

  1154. is like a beast.

  1155. We'll call it a horse.

  1156. The human will

  1157. is like a horse.

  1158. And that horse

  1159. is standing

  1160. in between

  1161. two riders.

  1162. If God rides,

  1163. he says,

  1164. it goes where

  1165. God wills.

  1166. If Satan rides,

  1167. he says,

  1168. it goes and it

  1169. wills where

  1170. Satan wills.

  1171. And here's the point.

  1172. The beast,

  1173. the horse,

  1174. can't choose

  1175. who rides it.

  1176. The riders themselves

  1177. fight for control

  1178. and possession

  1179. of the will.

1180. And so what God does

  1181. when he saves

  1182. a sinner

  1183. is he kicks

  1184. that old rider off

  1185. and he occupies

  1186. your will.

  1187. He gives you

  1188. a new will.

  1189. He enlivens

  1190. the sinner's will.

  1191. He resurrects

  1192. your old,

  1193. dead,

  1194. sin-chained will

  1195. and frees it

  1196. to love

  1197. and to do

  1198. the will of God

1199. to the glory of God.

  1200. He gives you

  1201. a new heart

  1202. that loves Christ

  1203. and loves

  1204. the law of God

  1205. and loves

  1206. to obey the Lord

  1207. and desires holiness.

1208. And where in the world

  1209. did that come from?

1210. It didn't come from you.

  1211. It is God

  1212. who works in you

  1213. to will

  1214. for his good pleasure.

  1215. The amazing thing

  1216. about the Christian life

1217. is that it is God

  1218. from beginning to end.

  1219. If you,

  1220. this morning,

  1221. have any desire

  1222. for the Lord

  1223. in your heart,

1224. if you hear these words

1225. and you want to grow

  1226. in obedience,

1227. if you want to know

  1228. the Lord

1229. and you want to pursue

  1230. him with your life,

  1231. praise God.

1232. That is his work in you.

  1233. By grace,

  1234. you have been saved

  1235. through faith.

1236. It is not of your own doing.

1237. It is the gift of God.

1238. Not a result of works

  1239. that no man

  1240. may boast.

  1241. It begins this way

  1242. in conversion.

  1243. God speaks

  1244. and dead bones live.

  1245. Jesus calls

  1246. and Lazarus

1247. walks out of the grave.

  1248. The invitation

  1249. is cast

  1250. to sinners

  1251. and they hear

1252. by the grace of God

1253. and they are made alive

1254. to the glory of God

1255. in the face of Christ.

  1256. It begins this way

  1257. in conversion

  1258. and it continues

  1259. this way

  1260. all the way

  1261. until glory

  1262. and the long

  1263. duty of sanctification

  1264. as God works

  1265. holiness

  1266. in you.

  1267. You realize

  1268. any victory

  1269. you have

  1270. in the Christian life,

  1271. any sin

  1272. that you put

  1273. to death

  1274. this week,

  1275. any obedience

  1276. that you go

1277. and you do a good work

1278. for the glory of God,

1279. you know where that comes from?

  1280. It's God

  1281. who works in you

  1282. both to will

  1283. and to work

  1284. for his good pleasure.

  1285. So church,

  1286. let's close

  1287. by coming back

  1288. to Augustine.

  1289. If you're

  1290. struggling

  1291. with coming

  1292. to Christ

  1293. this morning,

  1294. maybe you just,

  1295. if you're being honest,

  1296. you don't desire

  1297. him at all.

  1298. You desire sin,

  1299. you desire

  1300. the world,

  1301. you desire

  1302. anything else

  1303. other than the glory

  1304. of God

  1305. and the gospel

  1306. of Christ.

  1307. Or Christian,

  1308. if you are

  1309. wrestling

  1310. and struggling

  1311. with putting

  1312. some sin

  1313. to death,

  1314. you just don't know

  1315. how in the world

  1316. you can grow out

  1317. of this,

  1318. wrestling with

  1319. giving yourself

  1320. completely to him,

  1321. maybe if that's you,

  1322. you could pray

  1323. something like

  1324. what Augustine

  1325. prayed in confessions.

  1326. He prayed this,

  1327. Grant what thou

  1328. dost command

  1329. and then command

  1330. what thou wilt.

  1331. You remember

  1332. his struggle.

  1333. I want to follow

  1334. you but not yet.

1335. I want to be holy

  1336. but not yet.

  1337. I want to follow

  1338. Christ but not yet.

  1339. Augustine struggled

  1340. to come to faith

  1341. in Christ

  1342. and once he came

  1343. to faith in Christ

  1344. he struggled

  1345. to fully obey.

  1346. He struggled

  1347. like we do

  1348. but then he had

  1349. this life-changing

  1350. realization.

1351. You know what it was?

  1352. He realized

  1353. he couldn't

  1354. do it.

  1355. So he said,

  1356. you command

  1357. self-control.

  1358. You command

  1359. holiness.

  1360. God,

  1361. you command

  1362. that I love

  1363. Christ.

  1364. You command

  1365. that I follow

  1366. Christ but I realize

1367. no one can do it

  1368. unless God

  1369. gives it.

  1370. And so I prayed,

  1371. give me the grace

1372. to do as you command

  1373. and then command

  1374. me to do

  1375. whatever you want.

  1376. It might be that.

  1377. Some of you here

1378. are wrestling in this way

  1379. and so here's my

  1380. encouragement to you.

  1381. Non-believer,

  1382. your prayer this morning

  1383. might sound like this.

  1384. You've commanded me

  1385. to repent and follow

  1386. Christ but I realize

  1387. I cannot do it

  1388. so Lord,

  1389. I ask now,

  1390. would you give me

  1391. the grace to do

  1392. as you command

1393. and then bid me come.

  1394. And for you Christian,

  1395. the Christian life

  1396. is impossible

  1397. apart from the work

  1398. of God.

  1399. So for that sin

1400. that lingers in the flesh,

  1401. for that command

  1402. that you just struggle

  1403. to find the courage

  1404. and the power

  1405. to obey,

  1406. for that part

  1407. of the Christian life

  1408. that just seems

  1409. impossible for you

  1410. to put on,

  1411. pray,

  1412. Lord,

  1413. would you give me

  1414. the grace

1415. to do as you command

  1416. and ask whatever

  1417. you want.

  1418. The power

  1419. for the Christian life

  1420. is from God

  1421. and God alone.

  1422. Let's pray.

  1423. Lord,

  1424. we need you.

  1425. We come to you

  1426. this morning weak.

  1427. We come to you

  1428. this morning powerless

  1429. to do anything

  1430. that you've commanded

  1431. us to do.

  1432. God,

1433. each week I stand up here

1434. and I ask the impossible

  1435. Lord in the flesh

  1436. you must do it.

  1437. Father,

  1438. would you give

  1439. new life

1440. to those who are dead

  1441. in their sins

  1442. this morning?

  1443. God,

  1444. would you bring faith

1445. to those who don't know

  1446. you this morning?

  1447. Would you cause them

  1448. this morning

1449. to call out to you

1450. to have a renewed will

  1451. that desires life

  1452. in Christ?

  1453. Would you do that

  1454. this morning?

  1455. And Father,

  1456. for this church

1457. that I long to see

  1458. grow in holiness

  1459. and obedience,

  1460. Lord,

  1461. I can't make it happen.

  1462. So Father,

1463. I ask that you would do it.

  1464. I ask all this

  1465. in Jesus' name.

  1466. Amen.

  1467. Amen.

  1468. He is here.

  1469. Amen.

  1470. Thank you.

  1471. Amen.

  1472. Amen.

  1473. Amen.

  1474. Amen.

  1475. Amen.
