  1. Please take your Bibles and let's open them up to the book of Philippians this morning.

  2. Book of Philippians, once again, we're about halfway through chapter 3 this morning.

  3. And so, if you would, take your Bibles, open them up to Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  4. and we'll be in verse 12, all the way through chapter 4, verse 1.

  5. So when you found that in your Bibles, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word today.

  6. Paul says,

  7. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own,

  8. but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,

  9. I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  10. Let those of us who are mature think this way,

  11. and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.

  12. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

  13. Brothers, join in imitating me,

  14. and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.

  15. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears,

  16. walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.

  17. Their end is destruction,

  18. their God is their belly,

  19. and they glory in their shame with minds set on earthly things.

  20. But our citizenship is in heaven,

  21. and from it we await a Savior,

  22. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  23. who will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body,

  24. by the power that enables Him even to subject all things to Himself.

  25. Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for,

  26. my joy and my crown,

  27. stand firm thus in the Lord,

  28. my beloved.

  29. This is God's holy word.

  30. Let's pray once more.

  31. Father,

  32. we thank you for your word.

  33. We thank you for the promises contained here.

  34. We thank you for the warnings contained here.

  35. We pray now as we study this passage together,

  36. Lord, would you help our ears and our minds and our hearts

  37. to be attentive to what you would say to us this morning.

  38. We pray in Christ's name.

  39. Amen.

  40. You may be seated.

  41. We just sang one of my favorite Christmas hymns,

  42. Joy to the World,

  43. The Lord Has Come.

  44. Let earth receive her King.

  45. Let every heart prepare him room,

  46. and heaven and nature sing.

  47. This is my, again, annual petition.

  48. I do this every year.

  49. Annual petition to sing this hymn year round,

  50. not just at Christmas time,

  51. because in pinning those words,

  52. the author of Joy to the World

  53. wasn't thinking about the first coming of Christ.

  54. He was actually writing about the second coming of Christ.

  55. When the Lord, the King, would return and come home

  56. and reign as King over all the earth,

  57. and the earth would be filled with joy

  58. at the arrival of King Jesus.

  59. I, once again, request that we sing Joy to the World year round.

  60. Whether or not you realize it,

  61. you and I, we live in an incredibly unique period of human history.

  62. We live in between the two advents of Christ Jesus.

  63. Here at Christmas time, we celebrate the first coming of Christ,

  64. the first advent of Christ,

  65. and his coming as a baby, being born in a manger,

  66. but also his perfect life,

  67. and then his sacrificial death,

  68. and then his victorious resurrection,

  69. and then his ascension into heaven.

  70. All of that is in the first coming of Christ.

  71. That's past.

  72. But we also, we look forward to the second coming of Christ.

  73. There is an advent yet to come,

  74. when we will sing with fullness of joy,

  75. joy to the world,

  76. the Lord has come.

  77. And so my question for us this morning is,

  78. what is life meant to look like for Christians

  79. in between the two comings of Christ?

  80. What is life meant to look like for you and I

  81. in the in between?

  82. And the Apostle Paul, here in our passage this morning,

  83. he speaks to that question,

  84. and here's what he says.

  85. He says the faithful Christian life in the in between,

  86. it looks like working,

  87. and it looks like waiting.

  88. Faithfully, Christians in between the two comings of Christ

  89. are called to work hard,

  90. and to wait eagerly.

  91. Paul wants to make sure,

  92. especially after what he's just said

  93. in the first half of chapter three,

  94. that we understand that how you live

  95. in between the two comings of Christ,

  96. it truly, actually, really matters.

  97. You may have noticed this,

  98. as I read this morning,

  99. our passage,

  100. that our passage this morning,

  101. it picks up in the middle of Paul's train of thought.

  102. He's continuing a line of reasoning for us,

  103. and so we really need to zoom out

  104. and understand the context here

  105. of what he's saying.

  106. If you were here last week,

  107. then you heard Treg explain

  108. from verses two through 11,

  109. some of these incredible claims

  110. that Paul is making here

  111. in the first half of chapter three.

  112. He has said some pretty shocking things

  113. to the Philippians,

  114. and these are things that if you're just hearing this

  115. for the first time,

  116. it may be easy to misunderstand.

  117. These are things that you don't want to just skip right by

  118. and not really grasp the meat

  119. of what Paul has given to us.

  120. Maybe you're here,

  121. and you wouldn't necessarily even call yourself

  122. a Christian,

  123. or maybe this is all kind of new information to you.

  124. I want to encourage you this morning

  125. to pay close attention

  126. to what Paul is saying here in these verses,

  127. because if we misunderstand the gospel,

  128. then we can wind up in some pretty dangerous ditches

  129. here on either side of the road.

  130. So let's recap what he said last week.

  131. Think about this with me.

  132. Paul said up in verse three,

  133. chapter three, verse three,

  134. he said,

  135. we put no confidence in the flesh,

  136. none,

  137. no confidence in the flesh.

  138. You take all of your goodness,

  139. you take all of your obedience,

  140. you take all of your pride,

  141. and you toss it out the window.

  142. We put no confidence in the flesh.

  143. Not only this,

  144. he says to this Gentile church here in Philippi,

  145. he says,

  146. we are the circumcision,

  147. not those who are Jewish by birth only.

  148. We are the true heirs of the promises of God.

  149. We are the circumcision,

  150. not those who have kept the law of circumcision,

  151. and not those who insist that we keep the law of circumcision.

  152. We who know Christ Jesus by faith,

  153. we are the circumcision.

  154. In fact,

  155. he says that all of that,

  156. all of my confidence in the flesh,

  157. you remember,

  158. tribe of Benjamin,

  159. circumcised on the eighth day,

  160. Hebrew of Hebrews,

  161. Pharisee,

  162. as to the law,

  163. blameless under the law,

  164. all of it,

  165. Paul says,

  166. all of those trophies on my shelf,

  167. he calls it rubbish,

  168. compared to knowing Christ Jesus,

  169. my Lord.

  170. Here's the point.

  171. Paul says,

  172. the only thing that matters is knowing Christ Jesus by faith.

  173. The only thing that matters is knowing Christ Jesus by faith.

  174. And this is good news for us,

  175. church,

  176. isn't it?

  177. Because what this means for us is that ultimately,

  178. it doesn't matter ultimately what family you were born into.

  179. It doesn't matter ultimately how sinful you've been up to this point,

  180. or even how obedient you've been up to this point.

  181. It doesn't matter if you would consider yourself religious,

  182. or if you would classify yourself as rebellious.

  183. Rebellious,

  184. the only thing that matters is knowing the Lord Jesus Christ by faith.

  185. Of course,

  186. this is at the very heart of the gospel.

  187. We need to understand this.

  188. By grace,

  189. you have been saved by faith,

  190. Paul says in Ephesians 2.

  191. And this is not your own doing.

  192. Read that again,

  193. and again,

  194. and again,

  195. and again,

  196. until we get it.

  197. That is not your own doing.

  198. It's not your own doing.

  199. It's a gift of God,

  200. not by work,

  201. so that no man may boast.

  202. You all know how gifts work,

  203. right?

  204. If not,

  205. you got maybe 17 days to figure it out,

  206. okay?

  207. Gifts,

  208. you can't earn a gift.

  209. If you earn a gift,

  210. it's no longer a gift.

  211. What is it?

  212. It's a payment.

  213. It's a wage for works done.

  214. Paul says salvation is given by God

  215. to sinners who are bankrupt

  216. and couldn't afford it

  217. if they tried.

  218. It's given as a free gift

  219. of God's grace

  220. through the gift of faith

  221. in a Savior

  222. who has lived in your place,

  223. died in your place,

  224. risen in your place,

  225. so that by faith in Him,

  226. everything He's earned by right

  227. is now given to you by grace.

  228. This is the gospel.

  229. So Paul says,

  230. I want you to understand that

  231. because there's two ditches here

  232. that we need to avoid.

  233. Two ditches.

  234. Ditch number one

  235. on one side of the road.

  236. Paul,

  237. if that's true,

  238. if you already have

  239. Jesus' perfection

  240. credited to your account,

  241. and Paul,

  242. if you already know

  243. the power of His resurrection,

  244. well,

  245. then you can just

  246. take it easy.

  247. Relax.

  248. Coast your way to glory.

  249. You're already perfect in Christ.

  250. Paul,

  251. you said so,

  252. so relax.

  253. Why are you working so hard?

  254. That's ditch number one.

  255. Ditch number two

  256. on the other side of the road.

  257. Paul,

  258. if we're done with the law,

  259. if we're done with this whole system

  260. of works

  261. and earning

  262. and doing,

  263. if we're covered by grace,

  264. we're people of grace,

  265. we're saved by grace,

  266. we live in God's grace,

  267. well,

  268. then we're free to just live

  269. however we want to live,

  270. right?

  271. We can do whatever

  272. we want to do

  273. and live however

  274. we want to live.

  275. Paul wants to keep

  276. the Philippian church

  277. and us this morning,

  278. Siwe Bay,

  279. right in the middle

  280. of the road.

  281. And so he says,

  282. again,

  283. faithful Christian life

  284. here in the in-between,

  285. it looks like working

  286. and it looks like waiting.

  287. Let's see it in our passage

  288. here.

  289. First,

  290. here in the in-between,

  291. we are to be working.

  292. Look there with me

  293. to verse 12

  294. in our passage.

  295. Verse 12.

  296. Paul wants to make sure

  297. to avoid ditch number one

  298. and so he clarifies

  299. here in verse 12.

  300. He says,

  301. not that I have already

  302. obtained this

  303. or that I'm already perfect,

  304. but I press on

  305. to make it my own

  306. because Christ Jesus

  307. has made me

  308. his own.

  309. Brothers,

  310. I do not consider

  311. that I have made it

  312. my own,

  313. but one thing I do,

  314. forgetting what lies behind

  315. and straining forward

  316. to what lies ahead,

  317. I press on

  318. toward the goal

  319. for the prize

  320. of the upward call

  321. of God

  322. in Christ Jesus.

  323. That doesn't sound

  324. like Paul is taking it easy,

  325. does it?

  326. Paul wants to make it

  327. abundantly clear,

  328. doesn't he,

  329. that grace

  330. doesn't produce

  331. lazy Christians.

  332. And not if you understand

  333. it correctly.

  334. Paul says,

  335. yes,

  336. we are legally,

  337. objectively righteous

  338. in the sight of God.

  339. We are perfect

  340. in the sight of God.

  341. We are justified,

  342. declared righteous

  343. in the sight of God

  344. by faith in Christ.

  345. Yes,

  346. we are spiritually speaking,

  347. we are raised up

  348. with Christ,

  349. raised to walk

  350. in newness of life

  351. and yet,

  352. are you perfect,

  353. Christian?

  354. Do you still struggle

  355. with sin,

  356. Christian?

  357. Be honest.

  358. Do you still wrestle

  359. with temptation,

  360. Christian?

  361. Do you still struggle

  362. with anger,

  363. Christian?

  364. Do you still struggle

  365. with the sins

  366. of the flesh?

  367. Do you still struggle

  368. with weakness?

  369. I do.

  370. And Paul says,

  371. I do.

  372. And so he says,

  373. no, no, no,

  374. I don't coast my way

  375. to glory,

  376. I press on

  377. to make this perfection

  378. my own.

  379. See,

  380. the Christian life

  381. is one of active pursuit

  382. of what is already

  383. yours in Christ.

  384. You hear that?

  385. And so we're called

  386. to put off the old man

  387. and to put on

  388. the new man,

  389. as we're told

  390. in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  391. And this is the tension

  392. between the already

  393. and the not yet,

  394. isn't it?

  395. In Christ,

  396. if you're in Christ,

  397. you are already

  398. a new creation.

  399. The old is gone,

  400. behold,

  401. the new has come.

  402. And yet,

  403. not yet,

  404. we await the time

  405. when we will finally

  406. be a new creation.

  407. In Christ,

  408. if you know Christ Jesus

  409. by faith,

  410. you are already

  411. declared perfect

  412. in the sight of God.

  413. And yet,

  414. who here is perfect?

  415. And yet,

  416. we await

  417. a final perfection.

  418. If you are in Christ

  419. by faith,

  420. your salvation is secure,

  421. you are saved

  422. by the grace of God,

  423. and yet,

  424. not yet,

  425. we await a final,

  426. perfect,

  427. complete salvation

  428. at the day of Christ

  429. when He returns.

  430. We're here in the already

  431. and the not yet

  432. in between the two

  433. comings of Christ.

  434. We look backwards

  435. to see what's already done

  436. and we look forwards

  437. to see

  438. not yet.

  439. And here in the in between,

  440. Paul says,

  441. I press on

  442. to make the not yet

  443. my own right now.

  444. And he gives us

  445. two images here,

  446. two images here

  447. to drive that message home.

  448. The first is

  449. of a soldier in battle.

  450. A soldier in battle.

  451. Look to verse 12.

  452. The language here

  453. in verse 12

  454. is military language.

  455. He says,

  456. I press on

  457. to make it my own,

  458. verse 12.

  459. Another way to say that

  460. is I pursue it

  461. and I overtake it.

  462. This is wartime language.

  463. And Paul understands

  464. that the view

  465. from the air,

  466. okay,

  467. the view from the air

  468. is that the city

  469. has been taken,

  470. the victory is secured,

  471. but he also knows

  472. that as a soldier

  473. on the ground,

  474. it's not time

  475. to put away his gun yet.

  476. There's still a battle

  477. to be fought.

  478. There's still dangers

  479. out there

  480. to be avoided.

  481. The soldier on the ground

  482. still has to fight

  483. even though the view

  484. from the air,

  485. the battle has been won.

  486. So in the same way,

  487. Paul can say

  488. in the same breath,

  489. he says,

  490. Christian,

  491. the fight's been won already

  492. and yet,

  493. not yet.

  494. Go fight.

  495. Go press on.

  496. Go make it your own

  497. until he comes again.

  498. Image number two

  499. is of an athlete

  500. in competition.

  501. Look there

  502. to verse 13.

  503. He says,

  504. one thing I do,

  505. forgetting what lies behind

  506. and straining forward

  507. to what lies ahead,

  508. I press on

  509. toward the goal

  510. for the prize

  511. of the upward call

  512. of God

  513. in Christ Jesus.

  514. This straining forward,

  515. pressing on

  516. toward a goal,

  517. pursuing a prize,

  518. that's athlete language,

  519. isn't it?

  520. Paul knows

  521. that the Christian life

  522. is a little bit

  523. like a race.

  524. Now,

  525. I'm not a runner

  526. at all.

  527. You won't see me

  528. running laps anywhere,

  529. anytime soon,

  530. but I know this,

  531. I know you don't ease up

  532. after just a few laps

  533. of a race,

  534. do you?

  535. You don't slow down

  536. to look behind you.

  537. If you do,

  538. you're going to get overtaken.

  539. If you slow down

  540. and think about

  541. the last ten steps,

  542. that's not what

  543. a good runner does.

  544. The good runner

  545. doesn't think about

  546. the steps he's already taken.

  547. He thinks about

  548. the next step

  549. and the next step

  550. and the next step

  551. and ultimately

  552. he's thinking about

  553. the prize

  554. of completing the race

  555. and running that race

  556. as fast

  557. and as hard

  558. and as diligently

  559. as he possibly can.

  560. Paul is giving us

  561. this image to say,

  562. I'm not resting

  563. in what I've already done.

  564. I press on

  565. toward the prize

  566. of the goal

  567. of the upward call

  568. of God

  569. in Christ Jesus.

  570. Paul also knows

  571. he's smart

  572. like a good coach.

  573. He knows that

  574. the only way

  575. to really motivate

  576. Christians

  577. like you and me

  578. to get up

  579. and to work

  580. and to press on

  581. and to pursue

  582. in this way

  583. is not just to yell

  584. at them to do better.

  585. He gives us

  586. both the prize

  587. to pursue

  588. and the power

  589. to pursue it.

  590. What's the prize?

  591. What's the prize?

  592. It's the upward

  593. call of God

  594. in Christ Jesus.

  595. How is that

  596. for a goal?

  597. New Year's

  598. is just around

  599. the corner.

  600. Some of y'all

  601. make some

  602. New Year's resolutions.

  603. It's a good time

  604. to make some goals

  605. to evaluate your life

  606. and to make a few goals

  607. that you might

  608. be ambitious towards

  609. over the new year.

  610. Let's add this one

  611. to the list.

  612. I want to hear

  613. God say to me,

  614. well done,

  615. good and faithful servant.

  616. I want to run

  617. the race

  618. that's set before me

  619. so that at the return

  620. of Christ

  621. I will hear

  622. the voice of the Lord

  623. say,

  624. this one is mine.

  625. Come into the joy

  626. of your master.

  627. I want to press on

  628. towards glory.

  629. I want to press on

  630. towards perfection.

  631. I want to press on

  632. towards resurrection.

  633. I want to press on

  634. towards Christ.

  635. I don't want to coast

  636. my way to glory.

  637. I want to make mine

  638. what Christ has already

  639. purchased for me.

  640. How's that for a goal?

  641. How will we do it?

  642. What's the power?

  643. He says in verse 12.

  644. Look there again.

  645. I wonder if you caught this.

  646. Verse 12.

  647. He says,

  648. I press on

  649. to make it my own

  650. because

  651. Christ Jesus

  652. has made me

  653. his own.

  654. Do you hear that?

  655. The power

  656. for your pursuit

  657. of Christ

  658. lies entirely

  659. in the power

  660. of Christ's pursuit

  661. of you.

  662. This is the only power

  663. that we have

  664. to run the race

  665. that's set before us.

  666. You and I have

  667. zero power

  668. to pursue Christ

  669. apart from

  670. Christ's pursuit

  671. of us.

  672. We got to get this

  673. order correct

  674. because we don't

  675. pursue Christ

  676. in order for Christ

  677. to make us his own.

  678. No, no, no.

  679. Paul says,

  680. we press on

  681. because

  682. Christ Jesus

  683. has made me

  684. his own.

  685. We put on

  686. what belongs

  687. to us

  688. in Christ.

  689. We pursue

  690. Christ with our lives

  691. because Christ

  692. has already

  693. pursued us

  694. with his.

  695. And so,

  696. Christian,

  697. are you pursuing?

  698. Are you

  699. pressing forward?

  700. Are you

  701. straining

  702. forward?

  703. Are you

  704. striving to know

  705. more and more

  706. and more

  707. of the Lord?

  708. Not to earn

  709. his favor

  710. but because

  711. he has come

  712. and he has

  713. pursued you

  714. by the grace

  715. of God.

  716. The Christian

  717. life is to be

  718. characterized

  719. by working.

  720. Paul says

  721. in verse 15,

  722. let those of us

  723. who are mature

  724. think this way.

  725. And if

  726. in anything

  727. you think

  728. otherwise,

  729. God will

  730. reveal that

  731. also to you.

  732. Do you

  733. think this

  734. way?

  735. It's

  736. interesting

  737. how he

  738. says,

  739. let those

  740. of us

  741. who are

  742. mature

  743. think this

  744. way.

  745. Literally,

  746. you know

  747. what it

  748. says,

  749. literally,

  750. the word

  751. there for

  752. mature?

  753. It's

  754. perfect.

  755. Let

  756. those of

  757. us

  758. who are

  759. perfect

  760. think this

  761. way.

  762. It's a

  763. wordplay.

  764. It's the

  765. same wording

  766. as in

  767. Matthew 5

  768. 48,

  769. where Jesus

  770. says,

  771. you therefore

  772. must be

  773. perfect,

  774. as your

  775. heavenly

  776. father is

  777. perfect.

  778. Let those

  779. of us

  780. who are

  781. mature,

  782. perfect,

  783. think this

  784. way.

  785. So let

  786. me sum

  787. up

  788. point one

  789. like this.

  790. Paul says,

  791. if you

  792. are perfect,

  793. you will

  794. know that

  795. you're not

  796. perfect.

  797. So because

  798. Christ has

  799. made you

  800. perfect,

  801. you press

  802. on until

  803. you are

  804. made

  805. perfect at

  806. the day

  807. of Christ.

  808. That's the

  809. Christian

  810. life here

  811. in the

  812. in-between.

  813. Not only

  814. this,

  815. second,

  816. second,

  817. here in

  818. the in-between

  819. the Christian

  820. life is

  821. one of

  822. waiting.

  823. One of

  824. waiting.

  825. You remember

  826. ditch number

  827. two,

  828. don't you?

  829. Ditch number

  830. two,

  831. I am

  832. righteous,

  833. objectively

  834. righteous,

  835. and so I

  836. can live

  837. however I

  838. want.

  839. I am

  840. covered by

  841. the grace

  842. of God.

  843. We are

  844. grace people.

  845. We live

  846. in grace,

  847. not by

  848. works,

  849. and so it

  850. doesn't really

  851. ultimately matter

  852. how I

  853. live,

  854. right?

  855. Paul?

  856. Paul says,

  857. no,

  858. no,

  859. no,

  860. no,

  861. no,

  862. no,

  863. no.

  864. Here in

  865. the in-between,

  866. you are

  867. called to

  868. live a life

  869. of holy

  870. waiting.

  871. Holy

  872. waiting.

  873. You are a

  874. servant

  875. waiting on

  876. your master

  877. to return.

  878. As you

  879. wait,

  880. you are,

  881. we've already

  882. seen this,

  883. you're called

  884. to work out

  885. your salvation

  886. with fear

  887. and trembling

  888. because it's

  889. God who

  890. works in

  891. you to

  892. will and

  893. to work

  894. for his

  895. good

  896. pleasure.

  897. We're

  898. to live

  899. lives

  900. worthy

  901. of the

  902. gospel

  903. of

  904. Christ.

  905. Again,

  906. not to

  907. earn

  908. his

  909. favor,

  910. but because

  911. he's

  912. come and

  913. purchased

  914. this for

  915. you in

  916. Christ.

  917. Look there

  918. with me

  919. starting in

  920. verse 17

  921. because

  922. Paul contrasts

  923. two groups

  924. of people

  925. here in

  926. verses 17

  927. through 21.

  928. There's

  929. one group

  930. here that

  931. walk as

  932. enemies of

  933. the cross

  934. of Christ

  935. he says

  936. verse 18.

  937. And then

  938. there's

  939. those who

  940. walk according

  941. to the

  942. example of

  943. Paul

  944. and

  945. Timothy

  946. verse 17.

  947. You see the

  948. contrast there.

  949. He says,

  950. brothers join

  951. in imitating

  952. me and keep

  953. your eyes

  954. on those

  955. who walk

  956. according

  957. to the

  958. example

  959. that you

  960. have in

  961. us.

  962. That's one

  963. way of

  964. walking

  965. here in

  966. the in

  967. between.

  968. for many

  969. verse 18

  970. of whom

  971. I've often

  972. told you

  973. and now

  974. tell you

  975. even with

  976. tears

  977. walk

  978. as enemies

  979. of the

  980. cross

  981. of Christ.

  982. That's another

  983. way of

  984. walking

  985. here in

  986. the in

  987. between.

  988. And he

  989. says,

  990. be like

  991. this group

  992. not like

  993. this group.

  994. You see

  995. the contrast.

  996. Be like

  997. those who

  998. are waiting

  999. for the

  1000. return of

  1001. Christ

  1002. not like

  1003. those who

  1004. are rebelling.

  1005. Don't

  1006. walk like

  1007. them.

  1008. Don't use

  1009. grace as

  1010. an excuse

  1011. to walk

  1012. in sin.

  1013. Don't walk

  1014. like them.

  1015. Why?

  1016. Well,

  1017. look at how

  1018. he describes

  1019. this first

  1020. group of

  1021. people here.

  1022. And I

  1023. want you

  1024. to ask

  1025. yourself

  1026. as we

  1027. walk

  1028. through

  1029. this,

  1030. ask

  1031. yourself,

  1032. does

  1033. any of

  1034. this

  1035. describe

  1036. me?

  1037. He

  1038. says,

  1039. they are

  1040. enemies

  1041. of the

  1042. cross

  1043. of Christ.

  1044. This

  1045. is the

  1046. dividing

  1047. line

  1048. between

  1049. all

  1050. people.

  1051. Which

  1052. side

  1053. of the

  1054. cross

  1055. of

  1056. Christ

  1057. are

  1058. you

  1059. on?

  1060. Do you

  1061. look at

  1062. the

  1063. cross

  1064. of

  1065. Christ

  1066. where

  1067. Jesus

  1068. paid

  1069. for

  1070. the

  1071. sins

  1072. of

  1073. his

  1074. people?

  1075. Where

  1076. Jesus

  1077. bore

  1078. the wrath

  1079. of God

  1080. against

  1081. our

  1082. sin?

  1083. Where

  1084. the

  1085. perfect

  1086. son

  1087. of

  1088. God

  1089. was

  1090. made

  1091. sin

  1092. for

  1093. us

  1094. so

  1095. that

  1096. in

  1097. him

  1098. we

  1099. might

  1100. become

  1101. the

  1102. righteousness

  1103. of

  1104. God?

  1105. Do

  1106. you

  1107. look

  1108. at

  1109. the

  1110. cross

  1111. of

  1112. Christ

  1113. and

  1114. say,

  1115. yes,

  1116. that's

  1117. my

  1118. only

  1119. hope.

  1120. That's

  1121. my

  1122. only

  1123. hope

  1124. for

  1125. good

  1126. standing

  1127. and

  1128. salvation

  1129. and

  1130. righteousness.

  1131. That's

  1132. my

  1133. only

  1134. hope

  1135. to

  1136. know

  1137. God.

  1138. That's

  1139. my

  1140. only

  1141. hope

  1142. to

  1143. be

  1144. washed

  1145. clean

  1146. of

  1147. my

  1148. sin.

  1149. Do

  1150. you

  1151. look

  1152. at

  1153. that

  1154. and

  1155. cling

  1156. to

  1157. the

  1158. cross

  1159. and

  1160. say,

  1161. that's

  1162. life

  1163. for

  1164. me?

  1165. Or

  1166. do

  1167. you

  1168. look

  1169. at

  1170. the

  1171. cross

  1172. of

  1173. Christ

  1174. and

  1175. say,

  1176. it's

  1177. not

  1178. for

  1179. me.

  1180. I

  1181. could

  1182. take

  1183. it

  1184. or

  1185. leave

  1186. it.

  1187. It's

  1188. nothing

  1189. special

  1190. to

  1191. me.

  1192. It's

  1193. just

  1194. some

  1195. religious

  1196. stuff.

  1197. I've

  1198. heard

  1199. it

  1200. before.

  1201. I'm

  1202. not

  1203. impressed.

  1204. You

  1205. need to

  1206. know

  1207. that if

  1208. that's

  1209. how you

  1210. feel,

  1211. you are

  1212. not

  1213. neutral.

  1214. Paul

  1215. says,

  1216. you are

  1217. an

  1218. enemy

  1219. of

  1220. the

  1221. cross

  1222. of

  1223. Christ.

  1224. And

  1225. as

  1226. an

  1227. enemy

  1228. of

  1229. the

  1230. cross

  1231. of

  1232. Christ,

  1233. you

  1234. are

  1235. an

  1236. enemy

  1237. of

  1238. the

  1239. living

  1240. God.

  1241. Paul

  1242. says,

  1243. many

  1244. are

  1245. walking

  1246. this

  1247. way.

  1248. And

  1249. he

  1250. says

  1251. it

  1252. with

  1253. tears.

  1254. Don't

  1255. walk

  1256. this

  1257. way.

  1258. Don't

  1259. walk

  1260. this

  1261. way.

  1262. I'm

  1263. begging

  1264. you,

  1265. if you

  1266. are

  1267. here

  1268. as

  1269. an

  1270. enemy

  1271. of

  1272. the

  1273. cross

  1274. of

  1275. Christ,

  1276. do

  1277. not

  1278. leave

  1279. here

  1280. thinking

  1281. that

  1282. you

  1283. are

  1284. neutral

  1285. and

  1286. all

  1287. is

  1288. well.

  1289. Do

  1290. not

  1291. walk

  1292. this

  1293. way.

  1294. He

  1295. says

  1296. this

  1297. first

  1298. group

  1299. of

  1300. people

  1301. has

  1302. their

  1303. minds

  1304. set

  1305. on

  1306. earthly

  1307. things.

  1308. They're

  1309. consumed

  1310. with

  1311. earthly

  1312. things.

  1313. And

  1314. you

  1315. and I

  1316. know

  1317. this

  1318. as

  1319. well

  1320. as

  1321. I

  1322. do.

  1323. It's

  1324. far

  1325. too

  1326. easy

  1327. as

  1328. we

  1329. wait

  1330. on

  1331. the

  1332. return

  1333. of

  1334. Christ

  1335. that

  1336. we

  1337. can't

  1338. see,

  1339. that

  1340. we

  1341. don't

  1342. know

  1343. when

  1344. it's

  1345. coming,

  1346. it's

  1347. mysterious,

  1348. it's

  1349. invisible

  1350. to us,

  1351. it's

  1352. far

  1353. too

  1354. easy

  1355. for us

  1356. to be

  1357. distracted

  1358. by

  1359. things

  1360. that

  1361. we

  1362. can

  1363. see,

  1364. that

  1365. we

  1366. can

  1367. taste,

  1368. and

  1369. that

  1370. we

  1371. can

  1372. touch

  1373. with

  1374. our

  1375. hands,

  1376. that's

  1377. visible

  1378. and

  1379. tangible

  1380. here.

  1381. Waiting

  1382. on

  1383. his

  1384. return,

  1385. it

  1386. means

  1387. fixing

  1388. your

  1389. eyes

  1390. there

  1391. on

  1392. him,

  1393. not

  1394. on

  1395. things

  1396. here

  1397. on

  1398. the

  1399. earth.

  1400. Set

  1401. your

  1402. mind

  1403. on

  1404. Christ,

  1405. where

  1406. Christ

  1407. is,

  1408. seated

  1409. at the

  1410. right

  1411. hand

  1412. of

  1413. God.

  1414. Take

  1415. your

  1416. eyes

  1417. off

  1418. of

  1419. earthly

  1420. things

  1421. and

  1422. fix

  1423. your

  1424. eyes

  1425. on

  1426. Christ.

  1427. Don't

  1428. consume

  1429. yourself

  1430. with

  1431. stress

  1432. and

  1433. with

  1434. worry

  1435. about

  1436. things

  1437. that

  1438. are

  1439. just

  1440. going

  1441. to be

  1442. burned

  1443. up

  1444. like

  1445. chaff

  1446. on

  1447. the

  1448. last

  1449. day.

  1450. This

  1451. is

  1452. why

  1453. Paul

  1454. calls

  1455. us

  1456. in

  1457. chapter

  1458. 4

  1459. verse

  1460. 8.

  1461. Whatever

  1462. is

  1463. true,

  1464. whatever

  1465. is

  1466. honorable,

  1467. whatever

  1468. is

  1469. just,

  1470. whatever

  1471. is

  1472. pure,

  1473. whatever

  1474. is

  1475. lovely,

  1476. whatever

  1477. is

  1478. commendable,

  1479. if there's

  1480. any

  1481. excellence,

  1482. if there's

  1483. anything

  1484. worthy

  1485. of

  1486. praise,

  1487. think

  1488. about

  1489. these

  1490. things.

  1491. Don't

  1492. think so

  1493. much

  1494. about

  1495. money.

  1496. Don't

  1497. think so

  1498. much

  1499. about

  1500. sex.

  1501. Don't

  1502. think so

  1503. much

  1504. about

  1505. pleasure.

  1506. Don't

  1507. think so

  1508. much

  1509. about

  1510. entertainment.

  1511. Don't

  1512. think so

  1513. much

  1514. about

  1515. earthly

  1516. things.

  1517. Fix

  1518. your

  1519. mind

  1520. on

  1521. Christ.

  1522. Not

  1523. only this,

  1524. Paul says

  1525. also,

  1526. that they

  1527. glory in

  1528. their shame.

  1529. The things

  1530. that they

  1531. ought to be

  1532. ashamed of,

  1533. they celebrate.

  1534. How many

  1535. beers can I

  1536. drink?

  1537. How many

  1538. women can I

  1539. sleep with?

  1540. How much

  1541. money can I

  1542. hide from

  1543. the tax

  1544. man?

  1545. what are

  1546. you glorying

  1547. in now

  1548. that you

  1549. will be

  1550. ashamed

  1551. of at

  1552. the day

  1553. of

  1554. Christ?

  1555. And he

  1556. says here,

  1557. their God

  1558. is their

  1559. belly.

  1560. Now he

  1561. didn't have

  1562. to do

  1563. this right

  1564. at the

  1565. holiday

  1566. season.

  1567. I

  1568. didn't

  1569. plan this.

  1570. But in

  1571. God's

  1572. providence,

  1573. here we

  1574. are,

  1575. right?

  1576. Here's

  1577. the idea.

  1578. They

  1579. give their

  1580. appetite

  1581. whatever it

  1582. wants.

  1583. They

  1584. serve their

  1585. appetite and

  1586. feed it

  1587. whatever it

  1588. wants.

  1589. That belly

  1590. rules their

  1591. life.

  1592. They are

  1593. slaves to

  1594. their physical

  1595. cravings.

  1596. It makes

  1597. it a God.

  1598. The end

  1599. of all of

  1600. this,

  1601. Paul says

  1602. again with

  1603. tears,

  1604. with tears,

  1605. he says the

  1606. end of all

  1607. of this is

  1608. destruction.

  1609. Friend,

  1610. I'll ask you

  1611. again.

  1612. Are you

  1613. headed for

  1614. destruction?

  1615. Don't

  1616. leave this

  1617. place headed

  1618. for destruction.

  1619. temptation.

  1620. Here in

  1621. between we

  1622. live in a

  1623. time of

  1624. God's

  1625. mercy and

  1626. grace towards

  1627. sinners.

  1628. This invitation

  1629. of the cross

  1630. of Christ is

  1631. for you.

  1632. Praise God

  1633. that you're

  1634. here to hear

  1635. it this

  1636. morning.

  1637. God says

  1638. turn from

  1639. your sin,

  1640. repent and

  1641. put your

  1642. faith in

  1643. Christ and

  1644. you too

  1645. will live.

  1646. Don't

  1647. walk this

  1648. way.

  1649. Don't

  1650. walk this

  1651. way.

  1652. Instead,

  1653. Paul says,

  1654. instead walk

  1655. like this.

  1656. Walk like

  1657. those who are

  1658. waiting.

  1659. for his

  1660. return.

  1661. Walk like

  1662. those who

  1663. know the

  1664. king is

  1665. coming soon.

  1666. Walk like

  1667. those who

  1668. know that

  1669. the Lord is

  1670. coming and

  1671. with him.

  1672. He's

  1673. wrath for

  1674. his enemies

  1675. and life

  1676. for his

  1677. people.

  1678. He says

  1679. in verse

  1680. 17,

  1681. he says,

  1682. walk like

  1683. me.

  1684. Now that's

  1685. a bold

  1686. thing to

  1687. say.

  1688. For

  1689. somebody who

  1690. just says,

  1691. no,

  1692. I'm not

  1693. perfect.

  1694. He's not

  1695. saying I'm

  1696. perfect,

  1697. so imitate

  1698. me completely.

  1699. He says,

  1700. I am

  1701. trying my

  1702. darndest to

  1703. follow Christ.

  1704. I'm

  1705. pursuing it

  1706. with everything

  1707. I have.

  1708. Don't look

  1709. at me as

  1710. a savior,

  1711. but look

  1712. at me as

  1713. an example.

  1714. Walk like

  1715. me and keep

  1716. your eyes on

  1717. those who

  1718. walk according

  1719. to our

  1720. example.

  1721. Look how

  1722. I'm living.

  1723. I believe

  1724. in grace.

  1725. Don't you

  1726. think Paul

  1727. knows a

  1728. thing or two

  1729. about grace?

  1730. He says,

  1731. I believe

  1732. that I am

  1733. totally

  1734. justified.

  1735. I believe

  1736. that I have

  1737. Christ's

  1738. righteousness

  1739. in full

  1740. right now,

  1741. that I am

  1742. objectively

  1743. perfect,

  1744. and yet

  1745. look at

  1746. me.

  1747. I am

  1748. straining

  1749. forwards

  1750. towards this

  1751. perfection

  1752. ahead of

  1753. me.

  1754. I am

  1755. pressing

  1756. on to

  1757. know the

  1758. Lord.

  1759. Look at

  1760. me and

  1761. imitate my

  1762. example.

  1763. Live

  1764. waiting on

  1765. the return

  1766. of Christ.

  1767. This first

  1768. group of

  1769. people belongs

  1770. to the world.

  1771. They're headed

  1772. for destruction,

  1773. but he says,

  1774. here's the

  1775. contrast.

  1776. You,

  1777. Christian,

  1778. look there

  1779. to verse

  1780. 20.

  1781. Here's the

  1782. contrast.

  1783. But our

  1784. citizenship is

  1785. in heaven,

  1786. and from

  1787. it we

  1788. await a

  1789. Savior,

  1790. Jesus Christ,

  1791. who will

  1792. transform our

  1793. lowly body

  1794. to be like

  1795. his glorious

  1796. body by the

  1797. power that

  1798. enables him

  1799. even to

  1800. subject all

  1801. things to

  1802. himself.

  1803. Church,

  1804. would you

  1805. just do one

  1806. thing for me

  1807. this week?

  1808. Would you

  1809. memorize that

  1810. verse?

  1811. Would you

  1812. commit this

  1813. verse to

  1814. memory?

  1815. Would you

  1816. meditate on

  1817. it and

  1818. think on

  1819. it?

  1820. Because in

  1821. this verse,

  1822. Paul,

  1823. he gives us

  1824. a picture of

  1825. what we are

  1826. waiting for.

  1827. He says,

  1828. here in the

  1829. in-between,

  1830. we are

  1831. waiting for

  1832. home.

  1833. However good

  1834. your earthly

  1835. home is on

  1836. this side of

  1837. eternity,

  1838. listen,

  1839. there is a

  1840. much better,

  1841. more permanent,

  1842. more lasting,

  1843. more glorious

  1844. home ahead of

  1845. you.

  1846. However

  1847. difficult your

  1848. home life is,

  1849. maybe your

  1850. family is

  1851. difficult,

  1852. maybe there's

  1853. tensions in

  1854. the home,

  1855. maybe you

  1856. grew up in

  1857. a broken

  1858. home,

  1859. put your

  1860. faith and

  1861. your hope

  1862. in a

  1863. coming,

  1864. permanent

  1865. home for

  1866. all those

  1867. who know

  1868. the Lord.

  1869. Paul says

  1870. your citizenship

  1871. in Philippi,

  1872. your citizenship

  1873. in America,

  1874. all of that

  1875. is very,

  1876. very temporary,

  1877. it's fading

  1878. away,

  1879. it's momentary,

  1880. you are

  1881. citizens and

  1882. saints of

  1883. an eternal

  1884. kingdom of

  1885. glory to

  1886. come.

  1887. It's hard

  1888. to imagine

  1889. anything like

  1890. this,

  1891. isn't it?

  1892. A home

  1893. that's

  1894. imperishable,

  1895. undefiled,

  1896. unfading,

  1897. kept in

  1898. heaven for

  1899. you,

  1900. Peter says.

  1901. A home

  1902. that's free

  1903. from the

  1904. shackles of

  1905. sin and

  1906. death,

  1907. but Paul

  1908. says it's

  1909. ahead of you

  1910. and in

  1911. order for

  1912. you to

  1913. receive it,

  1914. guess what?

  1915. You too

  1916. must be

  1917. made

  1918. imperishable,

  1919. undefiled,

  1920. unfading,

  1921. and you too

  1922. must be

  1923. freed from

  1924. the shackles

  1925. of sin

  1926. and death.

  1927. And so

  1928. Paul says

  1929. ahead of you

  1930. Christian,

  1931. guess what?

  1932. We're waiting

  1933. for the

  1934. transformation

  1935. of our

  1936. bodies.

  1937. We're waiting

  1938. for

  1939. transformation.

  1940. I heard

  1941. a conversation,

  1942. overheard a

  1943. conversation the

  1944. other day

  1945. between two

  1946. children,

  1947. I won't tell

  1948. you again

  1949. which children

  1950. they were,

  1951. and one

  1952. asked the

  1953. other,

  1954. if you

  1955. could only

  1956. have one

  1957. thing for

  1958. Christmas,

  1959. for the rest

  1960. of your

  1961. life,

  1962. what would

  1963. it be?

  1964. And the

  1965. kid thought

  1966. about it and

  1967. then he

  1968. said,

  1969. I want to

  1970. be able to

  1971. drive,

  1972. and then I

  1973. want a

  1974. cyber truck.

  1975. He understood

  1976. something very

  1977. important that

  1978. we need to

  1979. understand,

  1980. church,

  1981. which is this,

  1982. just a

  1983. cyber truck,

  1984. that's no

  1985. good for a

  1986. kid,

  1987. is it?

  1988. He has to

  1989. be made

  1990. fit,

  1991. has to be

  1992. made capable

  1993. of enjoying

  1994. the gift.

  1995. He has to

  1996. be qualified

  1997. and transformed

  1998. in some way

  1999. so that he

  2000. can actually

  2001. receive it

  2002. and enjoy it

  2003. and not just

  2004. look at it.

  2005. In the same

  2006. way,

  2007. Paul is telling

  2008. us that

  2009. eternity with

  2010. God,

  2011. this promise

  2012. of a forever

  2013. home free

  2014. from sin,

  2015. this promise

  2016. of eternity

  2017. with the Lord

  2018. Jesus Christ,

  2019. we can't enjoy

  2020. it in this

  2021. physical fleshly

  2022. body that we

  2023. have right

  2024. now.

  2025. This body

  2026. is prone

  2027. to decay

  2028. and corruption,

  2029. it's weak,

  2030. it's perishable,

  2031. but good news,

  2032. Jesus Christ

  2033. has risen

  2034. from the dead,

  2035. he has been

  2036. raised with

  2037. an imperishable

  2038. glorious body,

  2039. and he says

  2040. if you are

  2041. united to me

  2042. by faith,

  2043. guess what?

  2044. You get one

  2045. too.

  2046. You will be

  2047. transformed

  2048. to be made

  2049. like him.

  2050. You will be

  2051. made fit

  2052. to enjoy

  2053. eternity

  2054. with him.

  2055. Just as we

  2056. have borne the

  2057. image of the

  2058. man of dust,

  2059. so also we

  2060. will bear the

  2061. image of the

  2062. man of heaven.

  2063. But friend,

  2064. that's not even

  2065. the best part.

  2066. What are we

  2067. waiting for?

  2068. Ultimately,

  2069. church,

  2070. we are waiting

  2071. for King

  2072. Jesus.

  2073. We are waiting

  2074. for Christ

  2075. Jesus himself.

  2076. Our citizenship,

  2077. is in heaven,

  2078. and from it

  2079. we await

  2080. a Savior,

  2081. the Lord

  2082. Jesus Christ,

  2083. more precious

  2084. than a forever

  2085. home,

  2086. more valuable

  2087. than an undying

  2088. glorified body.

  2089. Christ himself

  2090. is the greatest

  2091. treasure of heaven.

  2092. We are waiting

  2093. for the return

  2094. of Christ

  2095. that we might

  2096. see him

  2097. and we might

  2098. know him

  2099. in full,

  2100. that we might

  2101. be with him

  2102. forever.

  2103. That's what

  2104. we're waiting

  2105. for,

  2106. and so here

  2107. in between,

  2108. that's what

  2109. we are to

  2110. pursue

  2111. right now.

  2112. Are you

  2113. waiting for

  2114. him?

  2115. Are you

  2116. pressing on

  2117. to know

  2118. him,

  2119. the power

  2120. of his

  2121. resurrection

  2122. right now?

  2123. Church,

  2124. this Christmas

  2125. season as we

  2126. sing and as we

  2127. think about the

  2128. first coming

  2129. of Christ,

  2130. all the years

  2131. of waiting

  2132. and longing

  2133. and anticipating

  2134. this fulfillment

  2135. of God's

  2136. promises

  2137. and the

  2138. coming of

  2139. Christ,

  2140. please don't

  2141. just leave

  2142. it there.

  2143. I want you

  2144. to sing

  2145. and to worship

  2146. and to long

  2147. for and to

  2148. wait on the

  2149. time when he

  2150. will come

  2151. again,

  2152. when in

  2153. fullness

  2154. together

  2155. we'll sing

  2156. joy to the

  2157. world,

  2158. the Lord

  2159. has come.

  2160. Let earth

  2161. receive her

  2162. king.

  2163. Let every

  2164. heart prepare

  2165. him room

  2166. in heaven

  2167. and nature

  2168. sing.

  2169. O come,

  2170. O come,

  2171. Emmanuel,

  2172. and ransom

  2173. captive Israel

  2174. that mourns

  2175. in lonely

  2176. exile here

  2177. until the

  2178. Son of God

  2179. appear.

  2180. Come thou

  2181. long-expected

  2182. Jesus,

  2183. born to set

  2184. thy people

  2185. free.

  2186. From our

  2187. fears and

  2188. sins,

  2189. release us.

  2190. Let us find

  2191. our rest

  2192. in thee.

  2193. Father,

  2194. we praise

  2195. you for what

  2196. you've done

  2197. in the first

  2198. coming of

  2199. Christ.

  2200. We praise

  2201. you for the

  2202. cross of

  2203. Christ.

  2204. And we

  2205. praise you for

  2206. the certain

  2207. return of

  2208. Christ and

  2209. for the

  2210. kingdom to

  2211. come,

  2212. of which we

  2213. are citizens

  2214. and saints

  2215. if we know

  2216. him by faith

  2217. right now.

  2218. And so we

  2219. pray, Lord,

  2220. for those of

  2221. us that have

  2222. been saved by

  2223. grace through

  2224. faith, would

  2225. you lead us

  2226. to press on,

  2227. lead us to

  2228. persevere,

  2229. lead us to

  2230. press on to

  2231. make that

  2232. perfection and

  2233. righteousness

  2234. ours that

  2235. already belongs

  2236. to us in

  2237. Christ.

  2238. And for

  2239. those of

  2240. us who

  2241. are walking

  2242. now as

  2243. enemies of

  2244. the cross

  2245. of Christ,

  2246. would you

  2247. cause us

  2248. this moment

  2249. to repent

  2250. and put our

  2251. faith in a

  2252. holy savior

  2253. who loves us

  2254. and loves

  2255. sinners like

  2256. us, came

  2257. for sinners

  2258. like us.

  2259. We love

  2260. you,

  2261. Father, we

  2262. pray this in

  2263. Jesus' name.

  2264. Amen.

  2265. Amen.

  2266. Amen.

  2267. Amen.

  2268. Amen.

  2269. Amen.

  2270. Amen.
