  1. Well, as I mentioned earlier, we are beginning a new series this morning in the book of Genesis,

  2. and I joked last week with you that we would probably spend something like the next 10 years or so together in Genesis.

  3. That's not really true, but we will take a good bit of time to go through this together,

  4. especially so in the first three chapters of Genesis.

  5. And we really want to take our time here because these first chapters of Genesis are foundational for our faith.

  6. Foundational. They're significant for us.

  7. And so if you would, please take your Bibles and open them up to the book of Genesis this morning.

  8. If you don't have a Bible, if you didn't bring one with you, feel free to use one of those in the seat backs in front of you.

  9. If you don't have a Bible at all of your own, feel free to take that one home with you as our gift to you.

  10. It should be easy to find our passage this morning.

  11. It's the first book of the Bible, the first chapter of the first book of the Bible,

  12. and first verse of the first chapter of the first book of the Bible.

  13. Genesis 1 verse 1.

    Genesis 1:1

  14. And so when you found it, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word this morning.

  15. Genesis 1 verse 1.

    Genesis 1:1

  16. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  17. Let's pray again.

  18. Lord, Father, these words are familiar to us, but they, again, are so important for us.

  19. And so we pray, Lord, would you speak to us today and reveal yourself to us through the preaching of your Word.

  20. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  21. Amen.

  22. You may be seated.

  23. Every good builder knows that in order to build a sturdy house, you have to first lay a firm foundation.

  24. And if you don't, sooner or later, you're pretty much guaranteed to run into some significant issues.

  25. And sometimes you may not even know that the foundation is off.

  26. And maybe you move into a new house and you think everything is just fine.

  27. But then eventually you start noticing the walls are starting to crack.

  28. The floors are starting to buckle.

  29. The doorways are a little bit tilted.

  30. And you realize these are symptoms of a bigger issue.

  31. The foundation needs to be corrected.

  32. This morning we begin a new series in the book of Genesis.

  33. And you may be wondering, why in the world are we going to spend so much time together in the book of Genesis?

  34. Or even you may be wondering, well, how in the world could this old book,

  35. the very first book of the Old Testament,

  36. how could that have any relevance to my life at all?

  37. Well, one reason is Genesis is the foundation for the rest of the Bible.

  38. It's the very first book.

  39. If you want to read and understand your Bible better,

  40. one way to do so is to really study and read and understand the book of Genesis.

  41. Everything from the prophets to the gospels all the way to the book of Revelation,

  42. it's all built up on this foundation.

  43. Ken Matthews, one commentator, he says,

  44. if we possessed a Bible without Genesis,

  45. we would have a house of cards without foundation or mortar.

  46. It's also true theologically.

  47. As you think about all the major church doctrines, theological doctrines,

  48. one of my former professors, John Currid,

  49. he said almost every important church doctrine is found in seed form here in the book of Genesis.

  50. It's here in this book that we're introduced to God and man,

  51. good and evil, sin and temptation, law and grace, justice and mercy.

  52. There's themes of kingdom and covenant, blessing and cursing.

  53. The foundation for all of it is laid right here.

  54. And I would argue, again, that most of these themes are established for us

  55. even in the first chapters of the book of Genesis.

  56. It's not only that.

  57. It's not the only reason we want to turn to this book.

  58. As you look around us at our culture, hopefully you see what I see.

  59. There are cracks in the walls.

  60. The floors are buckling.

  61. The doorways are tilted.

  62. And when we look outside of these walls and we see issues around us,

  63. we ought to realize that these are ultimately, they are foundation issues.

  64. And so really, I'm hard pressed to find a more relevant book than this old book of Genesis.

  65. We see issues of human sexuality and identity.

  66. The value and the dignity of human life.

  67. We see the purpose and the meaning of life and the meaning of work and labor.

  68. We see the institution of marriage.

  69. All of it is right here, even in the first pages of the book of Genesis.

  70. I truly believe that rightly understood, the truths that we'll see here in this book are the foundation of a flourishing society.

  71. But not only for a flourishing society, but also for a flourishing church.

  72. I truly believe that many churches and many Christians would do well to take a slow walk through the Garden of Eden.

  73. To reinforce our foundation.

  74. Make certain that as things have gone by, as time has passed, that nothing has shifted or eroded as time has gone on.

  75. So here again, it's my prayer as we begin this book together.

  76. That God would lay for us a firm foundation for our faith.

  77. Amen?

  78. Would you pray again with me briefly one more time as we begin?

  79. And ask God to do that for us.

  80. Lord, we want to see and understand all things from a God-centered perspective.

  81. And so we pray and we ask again, Lord, would you lay for us a firm foundation for our faith?

  82. We commit this series, this sermon, this time together in Genesis to you.

  83. And we ask God that you would show us Christ.

  84. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  85. Amen.

  86. I see three foundational truths here about God in the first verse of Genesis.

  87. Three foundational truths about God.

  88. Number one, first we see that God is the focus of all things.

  89. God is the focus of all things.

  90. In the beginning, God, Derek Kinner says,

  91. It is no accident that God is the subject of the first sentence of the Bible.

  92. In fact, this word, God, dominates the whole chapter and catches the eye at every point of the page.

  93. It's used some 35 times in just as many verses of the story.

  94. So we won't spend too much time here, but I do just want to make this point.

  95. It's obvious, I think, but it needs to be said, the Bible begins with God.

  96. As we start off this journey in Genesis, you really can't miss this, can you?

  97. God is the main character of this book.

  98. If you were to pick up the Bible with no knowledge of Christianity, no knowledge of religion whatsoever,

  99. no knowledge of anything else that this book contained,

  100. if you were to pick it up and start reading at the very beginning,

  101. the very first person you would be introduced to is God.

  102. These first four words of the Bible, they teach us an incredibly important truth, and it's this.

  103. The world that we live in, it does not revolve around us.

  104. It revolves around God.

  105. It's not about us.

  106. We're not the king of the universe.

  107. God is the king of the universe.

  108. We're not the point of this story.

  109. God is the point of this story.

  110. God doesn't exist for us.

  111. We exist, along with everything else in the universe, for God.

  112. We have to understand this, and it's easy, again, it's obvious to see it,

  113. but it's impossible, apart from his grace, for us to really get this right.

  114. Because all of us, myself included, all of us in our sin nature, you know what we want to do?

  115. We want to make everything about us.

  116. And we want to be at the center.

  117. We want to be the focus.

  118. We want to be made much of.

  119. We want our desires to be affirmed.

  120. We want our ambitions to be celebrated.

  121. And our sin nature really doesn't like it any other way.

  122. But here again, in the beginning, we're reminded God is the focus.

  123. And it's his desires that are ultimate, not ours.

  124. And it's his words and it's his glory that are the center of the universe.

  125. And church, there's so many ways to apply this truth.

  126. There's application for our worship services here as we gather together for worship.

  127. When we gather together, again, in our sinful flesh, we might want to hear about us.

  128. We might want to sing about us.

  129. We might want to worship however we want to worship.

  130. We might want to come in and do whatever makes us feel good.

  131. But we ought to be reminded again, our time gathering here for worship isn't ultimately about us.

  132. And our wants and our preferences and our tastes.

  133. It is about God.

  134. And we ought to come in here expecting and desiring and wanting to meet with him.

  135. There's application for our times of private devotion and Bible reading.

  136. When we come to this book, the Bible, we ought to acknowledge it's for us.

  137. It's for our good, but it is not about us.

  138. We are not the focus of the Bible.

  139. God is the focus of the Bible.

  140. When we have our times of private devotion, the point of those times is to meet with God.

  141. Even as we look ahead to the great work of redemption at the cross of Christ, to the gospel.

  142. Again, although it is for you, it is not about you and how great you are.

  143. It is about God and how great God is.

  144. We apply it to our own life.

  145. And this is a big realization.

  146. Every part of your life, your career, your marriage, your families, your ambitions.

  147. Again, these are wonderful gifts to us, but they are not ultimately about us.

  148. We exist to magnify the glory of God in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  149. And you remember from last week, what we saw last week from Matthew chapter 28.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  150. The first task of every believer is to magnify the glory of God.

  151. How?

  152. It is by enjoying Him.

  153. By delighting in Him.

  154. So we have to ask here as we begin this book together.

  155. Is He the very center of your life and your joy?

  156. Or do you fight Him for control of that position in your life?

  157. You hear that question?

  158. Is God and His glory at the very center of your life and your joy and your ambition?

  159. Or do you wrestle with Him and try to replace Him as the center of your life?

  160. Listen to this from Jonathan Edwards.

  161. He says,

  162. This is the difference between the joy of the hypocrite and the joy of the true saint.

  163. The hypocrite rejoices in himself.

  164. Self is the first foundation of his joy.

  165. The true saint rejoices in God.

  166. True saints have their minds in the first place inexpressibly pleased and delighted with the sweet ideas

  167. and the glorious and amiable nature of the things of God.

  168. And this is the spring of all their delights and the cream of all their pleasures.

  169. But the dependence of the affections of the hypocrites is in contrary order.

  170. They first rejoice that they are made so much of by God.

  171. And then on that ground, He seems lovely to them.

  172. You see the difference?

  173. Church, God is the focus of this story.

  174. The Bible begins with God.

  175. Fully satisfied.

  176. Fully content.

  177. Fully God before anything else in the universe is made.

  178. And in this first introduction to the person of God,

  179. we're told some very important truths about who He is.

  180. And so second, second foundational truth here,

  181. we see that God is the sovereign, eternal creator of all things.

  182. Second foundational truth.

  183. And we'll spend most of our time here on this point.

  184. God is the sovereign, eternal creator of all things.

  185. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  186. You know, it is interesting for me to think about the context of the Israelites

  187. as they would have first heard and received this text.

  188. I mean, put yourself in their shoes just for a moment.

  189. You might remember Moses wrote Genesis.

  190. And of course, they knew these truths through oral tradition,

  191. but they would have received this text and read it for the first time

  192. as they were making their way into the promised land.

  193. And you remember what that time was like for them.

  194. We just got done studying Joshua in the Sunday school hour.

  195. You remember what that time was like for them as they journeyed into the promised land.

  196. They are being called out of the world.

  197. They're being called to be a distinct people of God.

  198. They're being marked off as His distinct people.

  199. But you remember also how they're constantly tempted to look just like all the nations around them.

  200. They're tempted to bow down and to worship false gods.

  201. They're surrounded by enemies at every turn.

  202. And so they're tempted even to fear the strength of the gods of the nations,

  203. to fear the power of these false gods.

  204. And you think about what these false gods were like.

  205. All of these ancient Near Eastern cultures around them,

  206. they associated different parts of creation with the gods.

  207. And so they worshiped the God of the sun and the God of the moon

  208. and the God of the stars and the God of the water.

  209. As they looked around them, they spiritualized these aspects of creation

  210. and they worshiped them as something divine and something powerful.

  211. Think about how powerful and reassuring it would be for them to hear,

  212. No, no, no, no, no, no.

  213. In the beginning, before any of these things were made,

  214. God was there.

  215. Your God, the God who is creating you as His people,

  216. is the same God who created the heavens and the earth.

  217. These gods of the nations are no gods at all.

  218. These gods of the nations, they're the creation of the one true God.

  219. Everything that these other cultures worship,

  220. the one true God has made.

  221. He created it.

  222. He rules over these little G gods.

  223. They serve Him.

  224. They exist by His will.

  225. Why would you turn and serve any of these other things,

  226. other created things,

  227. when God, the creator of it all,

  228. calls you to serve Him?

  229. Why would you fear any of these other parts of creation,

  230. when God is the sovereign king of all creation?

  231. None of these things can harm you apart from His will.

  232. This very first line,

  233. along with everything that follows,

  234. is a reorientation for the Israelites

  235. to give them a God-centered worldview.

  236. As Israel journeyed into the promised land

  237. and prepared to set up civilization

  238. as God's people and God's kingdom,

  239. they needed to be reminded,

  240. God is the sovereign king of the universe.

  241. And you know what, church?

  242. Here, a few thousand years later,

  243. the church needs to be reminded

  244. of that very same message.

  245. You realize God has called us out of this world

  246. to be His distinct people.

  247. God has recreated us, the church,

  248. as His own people.

  249. We are marching forwards

  250. towards the true promised land.

  251. And all around us are false gods.

  252. All around you are created things

  253. that tempt you and that threaten you.

  254. And we too need to be reminded

  255. that there is one God

  256. who stands before all

  257. and He is the sovereign king of the universe.

  258. Not only this,

  259. but He's the eternal king of the universe.

  260. Have you ever thought about the fact

  261. that God is eternal?

  262. I hope you had your coffee this morning.

  263. This is a lot.

  264. Stephen Sharnock,

  265. he sums it up like this.

  266. He says that the fact that God is eternal,

  267. it means that He has no beginning,

  268. He has no end,

  269. and He has no temporal secession of time.

  270. God has no beginning,

  271. and no end,

  272. and has no temporal secession.

  273. My family went to the mountains for Thanksgiving.

  274. We were talking about it this morning.

  275. And as we were driving up

  276. and going up these long and winding roads

  277. up into the mountains,

  278. the boys were looking out the windows

  279. and just seeing these beautiful mountains

  280. in western North Carolina.

  281. It's dangerous how beautiful it is,

  282. especially for the driver, right?

  283. Because you shouldn't look out the windows.

  284. But as we went up these mountains,

  285. I was reminded of Psalm 90, verse 2.

    Psalms 90:2

  286. And it became our theme verse for the week.

  287. Psalm 90, verse 2.

    Psalms 90:2

  288. Before the mountains were brought forth,

  289. wherever you had formed the earth and the world,

  290. from everlasting to everlasting,

  291. you are God.

  292. God.

  293. In the beginning,

  294. God.

  295. God is there.

  296. Before anything else was there.

  297. Before these mountains,

  298. He was there totally complete,

  299. totally satisfied,

  300. totally glorious,

  301. totally content in and of Himself.

  302. He was there.

  303. And one billion years from now,

  304. guess what?

  305. God is there.

  306. From everlasting to everlasting,

  307. He is God.

  308. He has no beginning.

  309. He has no end.

  310. But listen,

  311. even if we could begin to understand that

  312. and wrap our minds around that,

  313. it's the third description

  314. that throws me for a loop.

  315. I don't know about you.

  316. In Him,

  317. there is no secession of time.

  318. You know,

  319. we can't,

  320. we can't even begin to conceive of this

  321. because we exist in time,

  322. don't we?

  323. And we measure everything,

  324. by time.

  325. We have a beginning.

  326. We age,

  327. and we progress.

  328. We change.

  329. We have a past.

  330. We have a future.

  331. We measure years by months,

  332. and months by weeks,

  333. and weeks by days,

  334. and days by hours,

  335. and minutes and seconds,

  336. and we can't escape time.

  337. We live within it.

  338. But for God,

  339. there is no past.

  340. There is no future.

  341. For God,

  342. there is only eternally right now.

  343. God isn't different today

  344. than He was a hundred million years ago.

  345. God won't be different a hundred million years

  346. in the future as He is right this minute.

  347. God was just as present with me there in the mountains

  348. as He was the moment they were created,

  349. as He will be when they dissolve.

  350. That's what it means to be eternal.

  351. You know,

  352. church,

  353. we,

  354. sometimes I fear that we take these truths for granted.

  355. That we know them intellectually.

  356. We know in the beginning God.

  357. The right response to a God like this

  358. is that we ought to marvel

  359. at a God like this.

  360. The God of the Bible is beyond our comprehension.

  361. I wonder,

  362. are you okay with that?

  363. Right away,

  364. in the very first book of the Bible,

  365. we are faced with truths

  366. that we cannot begin to comprehend.

  367. The truth is,

  368. I can describe that to you.

  369. God's eternal,

  370. but I can't fully wrap my mind around it.

  371. I can't fully explain it.

  372. Right here,

  373. at the beginning of the Bible,

  374. we are introduced

  375. to a God who is greater than us.

  376. Who is beyond us.

  377. To a God who is indescribable

  378. and incomprehensible

  379. and incomparable.

  380. And we aren't dealing here

  381. with a God that fits within the limits

  382. of our natural understanding.

  383. And sometimes you and I,

  384. we get frustrated

  385. when we come upon something

  386. in the Bible

  387. that we can't understand.

  388. And can I just suggest

  389. that maybe that ought to lead us

  390. to awe

  391. and wonder

  392. rather than frustration.

  393. God is beyond our comprehension.

  394. We can jump into that ocean of His glory

  395. and swim down as deep

  396. as we possibly can

  397. and guess what?

  398. You will never reach the bottom.

  399. In fact,

  400. this is what we have to look forward to

  401. in eternity

  402. in Christ.

  403. This is what we have been brought into

  404. by the grace of God

  405. through faith in Christ.

  406. If you are a Christian,

  407. listen to what you have to look forward to.

  408. This is what it means

  409. to be a Christian,

  410. by the way.

  411. To be a Christian

  412. is to be brought

  413. into relationship

  414. with this sovereign,

  415. eternal God

  416. by faith in Christ.

  417. And so now,

  418. for the rest of eternity,

  419. guess what you get to do?

  420. You get to plunge

  421. the depths

  422. of the glory of God

  423. and never exhaust His goodness.

  424. That's what it means

  425. to enjoy everlasting life.

  426. I used to think

  427. everlasting life

  428. sounded a little bit boring.

  429. Right?

  430. What in the world

  431. do you do

  432. with all that time?

  433. I had too small

  434. a view of God.

  435. It will take

  436. all of eternity

  437. for an eternal God

  438. to reveal Himself to you.

  439. New glories

  440. will unfold

  441. every moment,

  442. every hour of the day.

  443. New reasons to rejoice

  444. for the rest of eternity.

  445. New reasons

  446. to worship

  447. for the rest of eternity.

  448. New reasons

  449. to be satisfied

  450. in God

  451. for the rest of eternity.

  452. There is no end

  453. to His goodness.

  454. So there's no end

  455. to our pleasure in Him

  456. for the rest of eternity.

  457. An eternal God

  458. is reason to rejoice

  459. and to marvel,

  460. church.

  461. One of my favorite passages

  462. of Scripture

  463. is Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  464. Paul tells us

  465. in Ephesians 2,

  466. you were dead in sin.

  467. But God,

  468. being rich in mercy,

  469. because of the great love

  470. with which He loved us

  471. even when we were dead

  472. in our trespasses,

  473. made us alive

  474. together with Christ.

  475. By grace,

  476. you have been saved

  477. and raised us

  478. up with Him

  479. and seated us

  480. with Him

  481. in the heavenly places

  482. in Christ Jesus.

  483. Why?

  484. What's the point?

  485. What's the point?

  486. What's the end of it?

  487. What's this headed towards?

  488. Verse 7.

  489. So that

  490. in the coming ages

  491. He might show

  492. the immeasurable

  493. riches

  494. of His grace

  495. and kindness

  496. toward us

  497. in Christ Jesus.

  498. How long

  499. do you think

  500. that'll take,

  501. church?

  502. It'll take

  503. all of eternity

  504. for us to drink

  505. in the fullness

  506. of the immeasurable

  507. riches

  508. of God's grace

  509. and kindness

  510. towards us

  511. in Christ Jesus.

  512. If you enjoy

  513. God right now,

  514. friend,

  515. you don't know

  516. the half of it.

  517. He's beyond

  518. our comprehension

  519. and yet,

  520. and yet,

  521. here in the first

  522. verse of Scripture

  523. we see that

  524. God,

  525. the sovereign,

  526. eternal King

  527. of the universe,

  528. He has acted

  529. and He has

  530. spoken

  531. and He has

  532. created

  533. all things.

  534. So we should ask,

  535. why?

  536. Why did this

  537. sovereign,

  538. eternal God

  539. create all things?

  540. And we see the answer

  541. throughout the rest

  542. of Scripture

  543. and it's this.

  544. He has created

  545. all things

  546. in order that

  547. this infinite,

  548. eternal,

  549. glorious God

  550. might be known

  551. and His glory

  552. magnified

  553. in all the earth.

  554. So third,

  555. third foundational truth

  556. here about God

  557. is this,

  558. that all things

  559. exist for His glory.

  560. This God

  561. is worthy

  562. of our worship.

  563. That's the point

  564. of creation.

  565. That's the end

  566. of all of this.

  567. And again,

  568. we return right back

  569. to where we started,

  570. don't we?

  571. He created it all

  572. that He might be

  573. the focus

  574. of it all.

  575. God created

  576. all things

  577. that in all things

  578. He might display

  579. His glory.

  580. God created all things

  581. that in all things

  582. He might magnify

  583. the glory of God

  584. generally in creation,

  585. but specifically

  586. and especially

  587. in the gospel

  588. of Jesus Christ.

  589. A creation

  590. is for us,

  591. is for our good,

  592. we benefit from it,

  593. we enjoy it,

  594. but it is not

  595. about us,

  596. it's about Him

  597. and His glory.

  598. The point of creation

  599. is the magnification

  600. of the glory of God

  601. for from Him

  602. and to Him

  603. and through Him

  604. are all things

  605. to Him

  606. be the glory

  607. forever.

  608. He created all things

  609. that in all things

  610. He might put

  611. His glorious power

  612. on display.

  613. Psalm chapter 19,

    Psalms 19 chapter mention

  614. you know this text.

  615. The heavens

  616. declare

  617. the glory of God.

  618. The sky above

  619. proclaims

  620. His handiwork.

  621. Day to day

  622. pours out speech

  623. and night to night

  624. reveals knowledge.

  625. There's no speech

  626. nor are there words

  627. whose voice

  628. is not heard.

  629. Their voice goes

  630. throughout all the earth

  631. and their words

  632. to the end of the world.

  633. In them

  634. He has set a tent

  635. for the sun

  636. which comes out

  637. like a bridegroom

  638. leaving its chamber

  639. and like a strong man

  640. runs its course

  641. with joy.

  642. Its rising

  643. is from the end

  644. of the heavens

  645. and its circuit

  646. to the end of them

  647. and there is nothing

  648. hidden from its heat.

  649. Creation

  650. is proclaiming

  651. a message

  652. which

  653. it will never

  654. cease to amaze me

  655. how anyone

  656. could go outside

  657. and look up

  658. at the sky

  659. and think

  660. all of this

  661. is just an accident

  662. and some

  663. product of

  664. randomness.

  665. How in the world

  666. could anyone

  667. go to the beach

  668. to the ocean

  669. go walk in the woods

  670. put their feet

  671. in the grass

  672. go to the mountains

  673. and think

  674. that all of this

  675. just showed up

  676. on its own

  677. just random

  678. explosions

  679. of matter

  680. that apparently

  681. appeared on their own

  682. without any real

  683. explanation

  684. I mean

  685. it takes a great

  686. leap of faith

  687. to believe something

  688. like that.

  689. Creation

  690. itself

  691. is speaking

  692. a message

  693. it's telling you

  694. that it has been

  695. made

  696. by a good

  697. and glorious

  698. eternal

  699. sovereign

  700. God.

  701. Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  702. Paul says

  703. God's invisible

  704. attributes

  705. namely

  706. his eternal

  707. power

  708. and divine

  709. nature

  710. have been

  711. clearly

  712. perceived

  713. ever since

  714. the creation

  715. of the world

  716. in the things

  717. that have been

  718. made.

  719. He made

  720. all things

  721. to demonstrate

  722. and to

  723. communicate

  724. his eternal

  725. power

  726. and his

  727. divine nature

  728. that they

  729. might be

  730. perceived

  731. and in

  732. being perceived

  733. that they

  734. might be

  735. rejoiced

  736. in

  737. that he

  738. might be

  739. exalted

  740. and glorified.

  741. But not only

  742. this

  743. there's a

  744. greater purpose

  745. here

  746. for creation.

  747. Ultimately

  748. God

  749. made

  750. all

  751. things

  752. in order

  753. that he

  754. might

  755. redeem

  756. all things

  757. through his

  758. son Jesus

  759. Christ.

  760. creation

  761. in and of

  762. itself

  763. it can

  764. show forth

  765. his power

  766. and his

  767. divine nature

  768. and his

  769. creativity

  770. and his

  771. intelligence

  772. but the

  773. gospel

  774. of Jesus

  775. Christ

  776. shows us

  777. his grace

  778. and his

  779. love towards

  780. sinners

  781. and his

  782. heart of

  783. mercy

  784. as well

  785. as his

  786. wrath

  787. and his

  788. holiness

  789. and his

  790. justice.

  791. As we

  792. begin here

  793. in the

  794. book of

  795. Genesis

  796. we have

  797. to keep

  798. this in

  799. view

  800. that all

  801. of this

  802. everything else

  803. that we'll

  804. see in this

  805. book together

  806. ultimately

  807. all of it

  808. is about

  809. the glory

  810. of God

  811. in the

  812. gospel

  813. of Jesus

  814. Christ.

  815. Colossians

  816. 1

  817. 16 and

  818. 17

  819. says

  820. by him

  821. that is

  822. Jesus

  823. by him

  824. all things

  825. were created

  826. in heaven

  827. and on

  828. earth

  829. visible

  830. and invisible

  831. whether

  832. thrones

  833. or dominions

  834. or rulers

  835. and authorities

  836. all things

  837. were created

  838. through him

  839. and for

  840. him

  841. through

  842. Jesus

  843. and for

  844. Jesus

  845. and he

  846. is before

  847. all things

  848. and in

  849. him

  850. all things

  851. hold together

  852. where is

  853. Jesus in the

  854. first pages

  855. of the Bible

  856. he is there

  857. creating all

  858. things

  859. he is holding

  860. it all

  861. together

  862. he's ruling

  863. over creation

  864. as king

  865. of the

  866. universe

  867. John

    John 1 chapter mention

  868. chapter 1

  869. says

  870. in the

  871. beginning

  872. was

  873. the word

  874. the word

  875. was with

  876. God

  877. and the

  878. word

  879. was

  880. God

  881. he was

  882. in the

  883. beginning

  884. with

  885. God

  886. all

  887. things

  888. were made

  889. through him

  890. and without

  891. him

  892. was not

  893. anything

  894. made

  895. that was

  896. made

  897. and this

  898. eternal

  899. word

  900. he goes

  901. on to

  902. tell us

  903. this

  904. word

  905. became

  906. flesh

  907. and dwelt

  908. among us

  909. and to

  910. all who

  911. receive him

  912. who

  913. believe in

  914. his name

  915. he gives

  916. the right

  917. to become

  918. children

  919. of God

  920. Jesus

  921. is the

  922. focus

  923. of all

  924. things

  925. Jesus

  926. is the

  927. sovereign

  928. eternal

  929. creator

  930. of it

  931. all

  932. and Jesus

  933. is worthy

  934. of our

  935. worship

  936. all things

  937. exist for

  938. the glory

  939. of king

  940. Jesus

  941. Jesus

  942. is the

  943. lamb

  944. who was

  945. slain

  946. from before

  947. the foundation

  948. of the

  949. world

  950. for the

  951. salvation

  952. of a

  953. people

  954. who are

  955. chosen

  956. in him

  957. before

  958. the

  959. foundation

  960. of the

  961. world

  962. that we

  963. might

  964. inherit

  965. a kingdom

  966. prepared

  967. for us

  968. from before

  969. the foundation

  970. of the

  971. world

  972. and enjoy

  973. the glory

  974. of God

  975. who existed

  976. before

  977. the foundation

  978. of the

  979. world

  980. for the

  981. rest

  982. of

  983. eternity

  984. this

  985. is why

  986. he

  987. created

  988. the

  989. world

  990. and this

  991. is why

  992. he

  993. created

  994. you

  995. is this

  996. how you

  997. see the

  998. world

  999. around

  1000. you

  1001. is this

  1002. how you

  1003. understand

  1004. the

  1005. universe

  1006. and all

  1007. that exists

  1008. within it

  1009. do you

  1010. understand

  1011. all things

  1012. in the

  1013. universe

  1014. including

  1015. you

  1016. and your

  1017. life

  1018. including

  1019. you

  1020. and your

  1021. plans

  1022. including

  1023. you

  1024. and your

  1025. desires

  1026. including

  1027. you

  1028. and your

  1029. ambitions

  1030. do you

  1031. understand

  1032. that all

  1033. of it

  1034. all of it

  1035. exists for

  1036. him

  1037. and his

  1038. glory

  1039. friend

  1040. if the

  1041. walls are

  1042. cracking

  1043. the floors

  1044. are buckling

  1045. the doors

  1046. are tilting

  1047. and the house

  1048. is leaning

  1049. let's make

  1050. certain

  1051. the foundation

  1052. is solid

  1053. it may be

  1054. that you

  1055. have built

  1056. your life

  1057. on another

  1058. foundation

  1059. whatever

  1060. that may

  1061. be

  1062. if you

  1063. have

  1064. done

  1065. so

  1066. it's

  1067. my

  1068. invitation

  1069. my

  1070. call

  1071. to you

  1072. this

  1073. morning

  1074. would you

  1075. repent

  1076. and put

  1077. your faith

  1078. in Christ

  1079. would you

  1080. boot yourself

  1081. out of the

  1082. focus and

  1083. center of

  1084. your life

  1085. and instead

  1086. turn to

  1087. Christ

  1088. and make

  1089. God and

  1090. his glory

  1091. the foundation

  1092. and the center

  1093. of your life

  1094. and church

  1095. it may just

  1096. be that time

  1097. has gone

  1098. on and things

  1099. have settled

  1100. a little bit

  1101. and we need

  1102. some reinforcement

  1103. this morning

  1104. whatever that

  1105. may be

  1106. church

  1107. it's my

  1108. desire

  1109. that each

  1110. one of us

  1111. would live

  1112. with God

  1113. and his

  1114. glory

  1115. in Christ

  1116. right at the

  1117. center of our

  1118. lives

  1119. let's pray

  1120. father

  1121. worthy are you

  1122. oh lord

  1123. and god

  1124. to receive

  1125. glory and

  1126. honor and

  1127. praise and

  1128. power

  1129. and worthy

  1130. are you

  1131. for you

  1132. created all

  1133. things and

  1134. by your

  1135. will they

  1136. existed and

  1137. were created

  1138. father you

  1139. are worthy

  1140. of our

  1141. lives

  1142. we exist

  1143. for you

  1144. not for

  1145. ourselves

  1146. we're made

  1147. to serve

  1148. and to

  1149. honor you

  1150. and and

  1151. there's no

  1152. greater joy

  1153. and delight

  1154. than to know

  1155. you father

  1156. now and to

  1157. the rest of

  1158. eternity

  1159. and so we

  1160. pray god

  1161. would you be

  1162. central to

  1163. our lives

  1164. we ask this

  1165. in jesus name

  1166. amen
