  1. Well, would you please take your Bibles and open them up again to the book of Genesis?

  2. We're still in chapter 1.

  3. Somebody asked me, I won't tell you who, this morning, if it was really going to take 10

  4. years for us to get through Genesis.

  5. Lord willing, will not.

  6. But the first three chapters here, as we've said, are so foundational for us that we are

  7. going to spend a good bit of time walking slowly through these first three chapters.

  8. And today we're looking at the sixth day of creation, that's Genesis chapter 1, verses

    Genesis 1:24–31

  9. 24 through 31.

  10. And so when you found that in your Bibles, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's

  11. word this morning from Genesis chapter 1, verses 24 through 31, sixth day of creation.

    Genesis 1:24–31

  12. And God said, let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds, livestock

  13. and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.

  14. And it was so.

  15. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to

  16. their kinds and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind.

  17. And God saw that it was good.

  18. Then God said, let us make man in our image after our likeness and let them have dominion

  19. over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over

  20. all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

  21. So God created man in his own image.

  22. In the image of God, he created him male and female.

  23. He created them and God blessed them.

  24. God said to them, be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion

  25. over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing

  26. that moves on the earth.

  27. And God said, behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all

  28. the earth and every tree with seed and its fruit.

  29. You shall have them for food.

  30. And to every beast of the earth and every bird of the heavens and everything that creeps

  31. on the earth and everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant

  32. for food.

  33. And it was so.

  34. And God saw everything that he had made.

  35. And behold, it was very good.

  36. And there was evening and there was morning.

  37. The sixth day.

  38. Would you pray with me once more?

  39. Lord, what an honor it is to be made in your image and to be remade into your image through

  40. your son, Jesus.

  41. And so we pray now as we look to this text, God, would you shape us further into your image

  42. through the word by the power of your spirit this morning, we ask in Jesus' name.

  43. Amen.

  44. You may be seated.

  45. You may remember seeing the headline about a year ago last week, actually, is January 28,

  46. 2024.

  47. And the headline read, Outrage as iconic Mona Lisa painting defaced by protesters.

  48. This is possibly the most famous image in the world painted by probably one of the most famous

  49. artists ever to live, Leonardo da Vinci.

  50. And apparently a group of protesters wanted to raise awareness about food insecurity in

  51. France.

  52. And the best way they could think to do that was to cover the Mona Lisa with a bunch of

  53. pumpkin soup.

  54. I threw it all over the famous picture.

  55. This isn't the first time that somebody has attacked the Mona Lisa.

  56. I read this week that apparently over the years she has been stabbed by a razor blade.

  57. And she's had acid poured on her.

  58. She was kidnapped once for two years.

  59. Nobody knew where the Mona Lisa was.

  60. For two years, an employee of the Louvre kidnapped her and kept her hidden.

  61. She's had rocks thrown at her.

  62. She's had mugs thrown at her.

  63. She's even had pastries smeared all over her.

  64. But amazingly, through it all, some 500 years later, the image still remains.

  65. Last week, we began to look at this first week of creation and we saw God create the skies

  66. and the earth and the sea and the sun and the moon and the stars.

  67. He worked like an architect.

  68. He was forming this unformed universe.

  69. And then he worked like an artist.

  70. You remember, he was filling this universe with life and beauty over the first five days.

  71. But now we come to this sixth day on day six and we see God is doing something different here on day six

  72. than the rest of his five days of creation.

  73. God, the artist of all creation, here on day six, makes mankind in his glorious image.

  74. This is the most impressive image in all the earth and is made by the most impressive, most glorious, most famous artist in all the universe.

  75. But as we know, over the years, this image has been attacked, has been marred, has been defaced,

  76. it has been drugged through the mud.

  77. But even still today, through it all, the image of God remains on every boy, every girl, every man, every woman.

  78. It is so important that we understand this high honor that you and I are made in God's image.

  79. And so what I want to do this morning is I want to look to this text and ask the question,

  80. well, what does it mean that you and I and everybody else, we are made in the image of God?

  81. What does that mean?

  82. What does that mean for our worth and our dignity and our roles and our responsibility?

  83. What does it mean for us to be humans made in the image of God?

  84. And we'll see three answers to that question here this morning.

  85. Three answers.

  86. Being in God's image means that you were made to resemble him,

  87. that you represent him,

  88. and that you receive from him your identity and your dignity.

  89. And we'll walk through all three of these together.

  90. First, we see being made in God's image means that you and I, in a very real way, we resemble God.

  91. Look there with me to verse 24.

  92. And just like on the third day of creation, there are two acts here on the sixth day.

  93. These are parallels here.

  94. First, we see God calls for the earth to bring forth living creatures according to their kinds.

  95. And he says three categories of these land animals are mentioned as livestock.

  96. These are the large domesticated animals.

  97. And then there's the creeping things.

  98. Those are all the animals you don't want in your house.

  99. And then there's the wild beasts of the earth.

  100. Those are the wild animals.

  101. And just as with the rest of creation, everything here is put in its order, isn't it?

  102. Each with its kind.

  103. Each in its place.

  104. And again, just as with the first five days of creation,

  105. God sees what he's made and he declares over it that what he's made is good.

  106. But then we see here that we're showing something happens that's different than what's happened here on the first five days.

  107. Something totally unique and distinct happens here in verse 26.

  108. Then God said, let us make man in our image and after our likeness.

  109. So, verse 27 says, so God created man in his own image.

  110. In the image of God, he created him.

  111. Male and female, he created them.

  112. This repetition here is intentional.

  113. It's meant to draw our attention here that something special, something unique,

  114. something important is happening here in the making of man.

  115. This is the grand finale of the week of creation.

  116. This is the end of the fireworks show.

  117. That all of this has been building up to this moment, which is incredible.

  118. Because when you think about it, you compare us to the rest of creation.

  119. And I'm sure you've seen the same images that I've seen of Hubble telescope images of the galaxy.

  120. These pictures of the Milky Way.

  121. You've seen images of the stars and of the sun and of the planets.

  122. You look up at the sun and how bright and powerful it is.

  123. I'm sure each of you has been to some part of God's creation.

  124. It just makes your jaw drop and hit the floor in awe at what God has done.

  125. But here we see that all of this is just the opening act.

  126. His crowning work.

  127. The grand finale of all his creation is us.

  128. Why?

  129. Because unlike any other part of creation, man and woman distinctly bear the image of God.

  130. We are made to resemble him.

  131. I do want you to notice here also, by the way, clearly mankind is not a part of the animal kingdom.

  132. I know that's different from what you learn in elementary school science.

  133. But clearly here, mankind is set apart in a class of his own.

  134. He's distinct.

  135. He doesn't belong in any of these three categories of the land animals.

  136. He's set aside in a category of his own.

  137. And there's not a hint here that he might just be an elevated, evolved form of any of these creatures.

  138. Or just one of the creatures that just happened to develop a little bit further, a little bit faster and turn into man.

  139. From the very beginning, we see mankind is set apart with this distinction.

  140. That he and he alone, out of all creation, is made in the image of God.

  141. In fact, verse 26, we see mankind is given authority and dominion over all the rest of the animals.

  142. Over the fish of the sea and the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth.

  143. Over all the creeping things that you don't want in your house.

  144. Mankind is given dominion.

  145. There's an undeniable distinction here.

  146. In the value, in the worth, in the role of humanity over all the rest of creation.

  147. He is not one of them.

  148. He's certainly not less than them.

  149. He's not equal with them.

  150. He is in a class of his own.

  151. Why?

  152. Because we, in a very unique way, are made to resemble God.

  153. I remember growing up.

  154. More than once, somebody would tell me that I looked like my father.

  155. I was David's son.

  156. There's no denying it.

  157. And then I started to lose my hair.

  158. And even more, I heard I was David's son.

  159. There's no denying it.

  160. And then we had Cobb.

  161. And here's the same thing.

  162. He, in a very real way, resembles me.

  163. You look just like your father.

  164. You must belong to him.

  165. And in a way, he bears my image.

  166. But, you know, of course, God has no physical being like we do.

  167. And so we don't share our father's nose or his ears or his eye or his hairline.

  168. Right?

  169. So how do we resemble God?

  170. Well, we share some of his distinct qualities.

  171. Like God, you and I are relational.

  172. We can speak and communicate.

  173. We can speak and communicate with God himself.

  174. This is a very big part of what it means to be human,

  175. is that we can have a relationship with God, speak with him, relate to him.

  176. And like God, we're rational creatures, sometimes at least.

  177. Right?

  178. And we can think and we can reason.

  179. We can understand.

  180. We can gain knowledge and gain understanding.

  181. We can gain wisdom.

  182. We have personality.

  183. We have capacity for moral understanding and decision making.

  184. We have capacity to understand and obey the law of God.

  185. In a reflective sort of way, we can, as his creatures made in his image,

  186. we can share and experience and reflect his love, his goodness, his kindness.

  187. We have capacity for holiness and for justice and for graciousness

  188. and for faithfulness, for patience, for wisdom.

  189. These are all what we call the communicable attributes of God.

  190. Now, that's a big word, isn't it?

  191. And all that simply means is those descriptions of God that he shares with those who are made in his image.

  192. These are ways that we can be like God.

  193. So when we see these qualities in people around us, even in non-believers,

  194. we ought to see them as mirror-like reflections of the glory of God.

  195. We ought to celebrate these glimpses of God's character in ourselves and in one another.

  196. And when Christians put these qualities on,

  197. and when we pursue these God-like characteristics and put them on,

  198. we are showing forth to the watching world what God is like.

  199. This is an incredible distinction, an incredible honor that God has given us.

  200. Mankind is made to resemble God, which comes, second, with a big responsibility.

  201. Second, being made in God's image means that we represent him.

  202. We represent him.

  203. Look there with me to verse 28.

  204. Mankind is given a task here.

  205. It says God blessed them and he said to them, which that's new, by the way.

  206. God hasn't spoken directly to any part of his creation up until now,

  207. but now he speaks directly to mankind, blesses mankind, and now he gives us a job.

  208. Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it.

  209. Have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens

  210. and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

  211. So now we see that at least part of our imaging forth of God to the world

  212. is in our God-given responsibilities.

  213. We're not just meant to look like him.

  214. We're meant to act like him.

  215. We're meant to function like him.

  216. We're meant to work like him, even to work as an extension of him here on the earth.

  217. You know, ancient kings in this time, they used to set up statues

  218. on the borders of their territory.

  219. They would put up images of themselves on the borderlines of their territory

  220. to show, well, this land here is mine.

  221. These images here, they represent me.

  222. They represent my rule and my authority.

  223. And so now here, in a similar way, God is setting forth his images in his domain.

  224. And he says, go fill the earth with my image.

  225. They're commanded to go fill the domain of God.

  226. Now, I want you to think about these commands here.

  227. Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, subdue it.

  228. In light of what we've seen God do already in the first five days of creation.

  229. Because this is a command to continue the work of God

  230. as his representatives here on earth.

  231. Think about it with me.

  232. All of this, all of this is reproducing God's own creative activity.

  233. You remember last week, right?

  234. How God was busy giving shape and form to the formless.

  235. And then he was filling up the emptiness.

  236. And he was ruling over his creation by the power of his word.

  237. And now, what does he say?

  238. He says, you get to go be a part of this.

  239. You get to go represent me by continuing my work in the world.

  240. So go give form to the formless.

  241. Go maintain the structure and the order of the earth.

  242. Go rule over creation.

  243. Go subdue creation.

  244. Go have dominion.

  245. And order all things by my word.

  246. You get to work as God's representatives here on earth.

  247. You know, I think this really,

  248. it gives shape to the way that we think about work

  249. and vocation and labor, doesn't it?

  250. Work in and of itself and labor in and of itself

  251. isn't inherently bad.

  252. You think about this tomorrow morning when you go clock in to work, okay?

  253. Before sin enters the world and makes work difficult

  254. and bears thorns and thistles,

  255. it's hard for us to do labor.

  256. Before any of this happens,

  257. work in and of itself is a gift of God.

  258. It's a blessing for the glory of God.

  259. And so Christians are called to whatever they do,

  260. they're called to work heartily as for the Lord and not for men.

  261. And whatever work we involve ourselves in,

  262. it's meant to be an extension of the work of God.

  263. As we form the formless,

  264. order all things by His word.

  265. And then we see here this command to be fruitful and multiply,

  266. fill the earth, subdue it.

  267. That's a command to work as God's own representatives

  268. and see that the ends of the earth are filled with His glory.

  269. We're called, like God, to fill the earth with image bearers.

  270. Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth.

  271. When a husband and a wife come together and they say,

  272. let us make a child in our own image,

  273. who does that sound like to you?

  274. They're representing and extending the work of God.

  275. And in a beautiful act of creation,

  276. an eternal soul is now formed and brought into the world.

  277. An image bearer is formed.

  278. And God's image is multiplied on the earth

  279. through this blessing of childbearing.

  280. There's another spiritual dimension to these commands here

  281. that I want us to see, isn't there?

  282. Because some of y'all are tuning me out.

  283. Some of y'all who think that you're past the age of childbearing

  284. have already stopped listening.

  285. I want you to come back to me, okay?

  286. And some of you who have retired from your day jobs

  287. have already tuned me out and stopped listening.

  288. So you come back here with me too

  289. because there's work for you to do still.

  290. Listen to this.

  291. Remember again how it is that God brings beauty and order out of chaos.

  292. How was it?

  293. It's through the power of His Word, right?

  294. How is it that He forms the formless

  295. and He fills the earth with beauty and with life?

  296. It's through the power of His Word.

  297. How is it that He rules over all things in His domain?

  298. It's through the power of His Word.

  299. So how is it that you think that we as His representatives

  300. are to continue this work of God

  301. and to rule over all things and to bring order out of chaos

  302. and to fill the earth with His glory?

  303. Well, it's through the power of His Word.

  304. Spiritually speaking, on this side of the fall into sin,

  305. on this side of the chaos of sin in the world,

  306. one of the main ways that we rule over and subdue the world

  307. is by making certain that the world doesn't rule over and subdue us.

  308. And how do we do that?

  309. We guard ourselves by the power of His Word.

  310. It's by living according to His Word in our own lives,

  311. not letting the chaos of sin rule in your life,

  312. but instead you rule over it by the Word.

  313. Not letting the weeds grow in your mind and in your heart,

  314. but fighting for the purity of Eden in your own heart and in your life.

  315. Not letting the chaos rule over your family and rule over your marriage,

  316. but instead making the Word of God central in your marriage.

  317. This is how we bring form to the chaos here on this side of the fall.

  318. Letting the Word of Christ dwell in you richly,

  319. and then out of that, letting the Word shape and form your life at home

  320. and at work and wherever you may go.

  321. Also, on this side of the fall,

  322. one of the main ways that Christians, all Christians, young and old,

  323. can be fruitful and multiply is not just by having lots of babies,

  324. although that's good,

  325. it's by going and making disciples.

  326. Bearing spiritual children.

  327. Investing in the next generation of believers.

  328. Sharing the Gospel with those who don't know the Lord.

  329. And when they come to faith in Christ,

  330. guess what happens in them?

  331. They are reborn as children of God.

  332. The best way for you to fill the earth

  333. with the domain and the rule and the reign of God,

  334. to fill the earth with His image,

  335. is to share the Gospel and make disciples.

  336. And pray that through your faithful evangelism,

  337. the Lord would bring many spiritual children into the world

  338. by faith in Christ.

  339. This is God's means, ultimately,

  340. of filling the earth with His image,

  341. with His glory.

  342. Church, each one of us has been given this responsibility

  343. to rule and to reproduce.

  344. To order all things by His word

  345. and to fill the earth with His image.

  346. This is a high honor, is it not?

  347. Finally, third,

  348. being made in God's image means that we receive from Him

  349. our identity and our dignity.

  350. I wanted to shift gears here for a minute

  351. away from what we're called to do

  352. and instead focus here on this last point

  353. with who we are.

  354. With our identity in Christ.

  355. The fact that you are made in God's image.

  356. This is the building block for our identity.

  357. You realize this?

  358. And this is the foundational building block

  359. for who you are.

  360. Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  361. You don't have to turn there with me,

  362. but maybe just mark this down for later.

  363. The Pharisees and the Herodians,

  364. they come to Jesus.

  365. You may know this story.

  366. And they ask Him a question.

  367. It's a trick question.

  368. They're trying to trip Him up.

  369. They're trying to catch Him.

  370. And they say,

  371. Teacher, we know that you are true

  372. and do not care about anyone's opinion.

  373. For you are not swayed by appearances,

  374. but truly teach the way of God.

  375. So here's the question.

  376. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?

  377. Should we pay them or should we not?

  378. But knowing their hypocrisy,

  379. He said to them,

  380. Why put me to the test?

  381. Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.

  382. And they brought Him one.

  383. And He said to them,

  384. Whose likeness and inscription is this?

  385. Whose picture is on this coin?

  386. And they said to Him,

  387. Caesar's.

  388. And Jesus said to them,

  389. Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's,

  390. and to God the things that are God's.

  391. What's the point?

  392. Well, the coin bore Caesar's image.

  393. And so in a way,

  394. the coin belonged to Him.

  395. Jesus had no problem telling people

  396. they should pay their taxes.

  397. I know we don't like to hear that

  398. this time of year, right?

  399. He said that belongs to Him.

  400. It bears His image.

  401. But there's a bigger point here

  402. that Jesus is making.

  403. Render to God the things that are God's.

  404. Well, what's that?

  405. What bears God's image?

  406. You do.

  407. And so what does that mean for you?

  408. It means that you and I belong to Him.

  409. He gets to determine who you are.

  410. He gets to determine your identity.

  411. He gets to give you,

  412. and He gets to determine your value and your worth.

  413. You belong to God.

  414. This is the fundamental identity shaper

  415. that we all need to understand.

  416. We bear His image,

  417. so we belong to Him.

  418. Everything else around us,

  419. you realize this, don't you?

  420. Everything else around you

  421. is competing with God

  422. for that place of being able to shape

  423. and form your identity.

  424. Everything around you

  425. is wanting to boot God out of the way

  426. and have the main voice

  427. in determining who you are.

  428. Everything around you

  429. wants to help shape your worth

  430. and your sense of identity

  431. and belonging and being.

  432. One of my professors used to say,

  433. the most important part about you

  434. is not who you are,

  435. but it's whose you are.

  436. It's to whom do you belong?

  437. Church, I think we need to cling to this

  438. as the foundational roots

  439. for our identity,

  440. and especially so

  441. because in our time,

  442. and especially amongst younger generations,

  443. there is one primary identity shaper

  444. that's taken over

  445. just about everything else,

  446. and it's sexual orientation

  447. and gender identity.

  448. I believe that this is

  449. one of the main cultural issues

  450. that we face,

  451. and we really need to understand

  452. what God's word says about this

  453. because it's not silent about this,

  454. is it?

  455. Look with me to verse 27 again.

  456. God created man in his own image.

  457. In the image of God,

  458. he created him,

  459. male and female.

  460. He created them.

  461. We learn here that from the beginning,

  462. God created us,

  463. male and female.

  464. We are embodied,

  465. gendered beings.

  466. Sexuality is a good part of God's design.

  467. We bear God's image

  468. as embodied,

  469. gendered beings,

  470. as male or as female,

  471. and it's good,

  472. it's very good,

  473. he says,

  474. that we're made in his image,

  475. male and female.

  476. Humanity here is created binary,

  477. which means,

  478. if anybody is confused

  479. about their gender identity,

  480. our response as Christians,

  481. we shouldn't encourage them

  482. to be who they feel like they are.

  483. Instead,

  484. we ought to graciously,

  485. lovingly,

  486. patiently,

  487. and clearly

  488. point them back to God's good design,

  489. how they were created.

  490. We receive our identity

  491. from our creator.

  492. You belong to him.

  493. But not only this,

  494. look here with me,

  495. I want you to see this.

  496. All of us

  497. also receive our dignity

  498. from our creator.

  499. Our sense of worth

  500. and our value,

  501. our dignity

  502. comes from the fact

  503. that we are made

  504. in the image of God.

  505. You remember Israel

  506. read this text

  507. as they're coming out of Egypt

  508. and heading to the promised land

  509. and they knew

  510. that in Egypt,

  511. Pharaoh was considered

  512. to be the image of God.

  513. Pharaoh was the embodiment

  514. of God.

  515. He was very God in the flesh

  516. according to the Egyptians.

  517. But here in Genesis,

  518. Genesis corrects this

  519. on two levels.

  520. For one,

  521. nobody is God in the flesh here.

  522. And none of us

  523. are the full embodiment

  524. of God.

  525. It brings everybody

  526. down to the same level.

  527. But at the same time,

  528. it raises all of us up

  529. with this incredible dignity

  530. that all of us

  531. are made in the image

  532. of God.

  533. So you Hebrew slaves,

  534. guess what?

  535. You share the same level

  536. of dignity and worth

  537. as Pharaoh himself.

  538. You women here

  539. who had little to no status

  540. in the ancient Near East,

  541. you are just as valuable

  542. and dignified as men.

  543. He made us in his image,

  544. male and female.

  545. He created them.

  546. This message is completely radical

  547. in this context.

  548. All mankind bears the image

  549. of God.

  550. Which means that all people

  551. are owed our utmost honor

  552. and respect

  553. as men and women

  554. born in his image.

  555. This means all people.

  556. All people born

  557. and unborn

  558. are made in the image

  559. of God.

  560. Those inside the womb

  561. or outside the womb,

  562. your location doesn't change

  563. your worth.

  564. They're still image bearers

  565. from the moment

  566. of conception.

  567. People with

  568. and people without

  569. all sorts of disabilities,

  570. equally made

  571. in the image of God,

  572. equally valuable

  573. and worthy

  574. of honor and respect.

  575. People of every race

  576. and every color of skin

  577. that doesn't change

  578. your dignity and worth.

  579. Every ism

  580. that you can think of

  581. is shattered right here,

  582. isn't it?

  583. Because the image of God

  584. is upon every person.

  585. Ageism,

  586. sexism,

  587. racism,

  588. any type of attitude

  589. that might put you

  590. above somebody else,

  591. it gets shattered here.

  592. Because our dignity

  593. as a human race

  594. at a basic level

  595. is not determined

  596. or defined

  597. by our usefulness

  598. to society.

  599. It is not determined

  600. by our ability

  601. or by anything

  602. in us at all.

  603. It's determined

  604. by the image

  605. of God

  606. upon us.

  607. I love how

  608. Derek Kidner

  609. puts it.

  610. He says that

  611. this requires

  612. us

  613. to take

  614. all human beings

  615. infinitely seriously.

  616. It requires us

  617. to show honor

  618. to all people

  619. as God's own

  620. royal representatives.

  621. I wonder

  622. if we see

  623. people this way.

  624. I wonder

  625. if we

  626. speak

  627. to people

  628. this way.

  629. Not just one another.

  630. We love each other

  631. here in this room.

  632. I get that.

  633. People that we don't know.

  634. Is this how we

  635. treat and honor

  636. and speak about

  637. people that we don't know?

  638. How about

  639. how you treat

  640. and honor

  641. and speak to

  642. people online?

  643. It's real easy

  644. to be mean online.

  645. How about

  646. how we speak

  647. and honor

  648. and treat people

  649. that we don't

  650. really like

  651. too much?

  652. That we disagree

  653. with?

  654. That we didn't

  655. vote for?

  656. There's a basic

  657. level of honor

  658. here that's owed

  659. to all

  660. people.

  661. Because all

  662. people bear

  663. the image

  664. of God.

  665. God

  666. this

  667. is the most

  668. glorious

  669. image

  670. in all

  671. the earth

  672. imprinted

  673. on us

  674. by the most

  675. glorious

  676. creator

  677. and artist

  678. in all

  679. the universe.

  680. Look what he says

  681. about it here

  682. in verse 31.

  683. Over

  684. and over

  685. and over

  686. and over

  687. again

  688. throughout this week

  689. as he creates

  690. he says

  691. it was good

  692. it was good

  693. it was good

  694. and now

  695. for the seventh

  696. time

  697. God says

  698. it was good

  699. but not just

  700. good

  701. what does he say?

  702. It was very

  703. good

  704. but not

  705. for long.

  706. As we'll see

  707. in just a few

  708. weeks

  709. something

  710. has happened

  711. that has

  712. defaced

  713. this very

  714. good image.

  715. Sin

  716. has

  717. entered

  718. into the

  719. world

  720. and corrupted

  721. this very

  722. good image.

  723. Sin didn't

  724. destroy the

  725. image of God

  726. it's still

  727. there

  728. but it

  729. has

  730. smeared

  731. it

  732. and dragged

  733. it through

  734. the mud

  735. and thrown

  736. rocks

  737. at it

  738. and tried

  739. everything

  740. that it

  741. can

  742. to make

  743. it almost

  744. unrecognizable

  745. at times

  746. so that

  747. now

  748. it's

  749. defaced

  750. the image.

  751. Something

  752. is off

  753. we can

  754. agree about

  755. this

  756. can't we?

  757. If something

  758. is terribly

  759. off

  760. the image

  761. is distorted

  762. so none

  763. of us

  764. fully

  765. resemble

  766. God

  767. like we

  768. should

  769. there's

  770. parts in

  771. all of

  772. us

  773. that

  774. you got

  775. all this

  776. other stuff

  777. mingled

  778. in

  779. there's

  780. anger

  781. that

  782. shouldn't

  783. be

  784. there

  785. there's

  786. greed

  787. that

  788. shouldn't

  789. be

  790. there

  791. there's

  792. attitudes

  793. of the

  794. heart

  795. that

  796. just

  797. are

  798. nasty

  799. and prideful

  800. there's

  801. lust

  802. that

  803. shouldn't

  804. be

  805. there

  806. and

  807. none

  808. of us

  809. represent

  810. him

  811. fully

  812. as we

  813. should

  814. we

  815. don't

  816. rule

  817. over

  818. the

  819. world

  820. we

  821. become

  822. slaves

  823. to

  824. sin

  825. we

  826. let

  827. the

  828. world

  829. rule

  830. over

  831. us

  832. the

  833. question

  834. that

  835. we

  836. come

  837. back

  838. to

  839. time

  840. and

  841. time

  842. and

  843. time

  844. again

  845. is

  846. how

  847. can

  848. this

  849. tarnished

  850. image

  851. be

  852. restored

  853. back

  854. to

  855. his

  856. original

  857. glory

  858. is

  859. it

  860. possible

  861. and

  862. the

  863. good

  864. news

  865. of

  866. the

  867. gospel

  868. yes

  869. it

  870. can

  871. Christ

  872. Jesus

  873. has

  874. come

  875. to

  876. restore

  877. us

  878. fully

  879. into

  880. the

  881. image

  882. of

  883. God

  884. this

  885. is

  886. the

  887. good

  888. news

  889. of

  890. the

  891. gospel

  892. is

  893. that

  894. Jesus

  895. Christ

  896. has

  897. come

  898. to

  899. restore

  900. what

  901. was

  902. lost

  903. and

  904. broken

  905. and

  906. tarnished

  907. by

  908. sin

  909. and

  910. it

  911. is

  912. in

  913. him

  914. and

  915. him

  916. alone

  917. that

  918. there's

  919. hope

  920. that

  921. this

  922. image

  923. of

  924. God

  925. that's

  926. so

  927. hard

  928. to

  929. even

  930. recognize

  931. at

  932. times

  933. can

  934. be

  935. brought

  936. back

  937. to

  938. its

  939. former

  940. glory

  941. and

  942. preserved

  943. for

  944. the

  945. rest

  946. of

  947. eternity

  948. Christ

  949. alone

  950. can

  951. do

  952. this

  953. because

  954. Colossians 1

  955. tells us

  956. he is

  957. the

  958. image

  959. of

  960. the

  961. invisible

  962. God

  963. no one

  964. has

  965. looked

  966. more

  967. like

  968. God

  969. than

  970. him

  971. all

  972. of

  973. the

  974. glorious

  975. attributes

  976. of

  977. God

  978. his

  979. kindness

  980. his

  981. faithfulness

  982. his

  983. gentleness

  984. his

  985. mercy

  986. his

  987. grace

  988. are

  989. on

  990. full

  991. display

  992. in

  993. Jesus

  994. Christ

  995. he

  996. perfectly

  997. resembled

  998. God

  999. because

  1000. he

  1001. is

  1002. the

  1003. image

  1004. of

  1005. the

  1006. invisible

  1007. God

  1008. and

  1009. he

  1010. and

  1011. he

  1012. alone

  1013. has

  1014. totally

  1015. perfectly

  1016. ruled

  1017. over

  1018. the

  1019. chaos

  1020. of

  1021. this

  1022. present

  1023. evil

  1024. age

  1025. he's

  1026. ruled

  1027. over

  1028. and

  1029. conquered

  1030. sin

  1031. and

  1032. darkness

  1033. and even

  1034. the

  1035. grave

  1036. so to

  1037. him

  1038. is given

  1039. dominion

  1040. over

  1041. all

  1042. things

  1043. in

  1044. heaven

  1045. and

  1046. on

  1047. earth

  1048. all

  1049. authority

  1050. in

  1051. heaven

  1052. and

  1053. on

  1054. earth

  1055. has

  1056. been

  1057. given

  1058. to

  1059. him

  1060. and

  1061. now

  1062. what's

  1063. he

  1064. doing

  1065. he's

  1066. filling

  1067. the

  1068. earth

  1069. with

  1070. children

  1071. of

  1072. God

  1073. who

  1074. are

  1075. remade

  1076. in

  1077. the

  1078. image

  1079. of

  1080. God

  1081. by

  1082. faith

  1083. in

  1084. Christ

  1085. this

  1086. is

  1087. why

  1088. Christ

  1089. came

  1090. this

  1091. is

  1092. the

  1093. eternal

  1094. plan

  1095. of

  1096. God

  1097. for

  1098. those

  1099. whom

  1100. he

  1101. foreknew

  1102. he

  1103. also

  1104. predestined

  1105. to

  1106. be

  1107. conformed

  1108. to

  1109. the

  1110. image

  1111. of

  1112. his

  1113. son

  1114. in

  1115. order

  1116. that

  1117. he

  1118. might

  1119. be

  1120. the

  1121. first

  1122. born

  1123. among

  1124. many

  1125. brothers

  1126. and

  1127. those

  1128. whom

  1129. he

  1130. predestined

  1131. he

  1132. also

  1133. called

  1134. and

  1135. those

  1136. whom

  1137. he

  1138. called

  1139. he

  1140. also

  1141. justified

  1142. and

  1143. those

  1144. whom

  1145. he

  1146. justified

  1147. he

  1148. also

  1149. glorified

  1150. and

  1151. our

  1152. future

  1153. hope

  1154. our

  1155. confidence

  1156. through the

  1157. resurrection

  1158. of Christ

  1159. is that

  1160. just as we

  1161. have borne the

  1162. image of the

  1163. man of

  1164. dust

  1165. so we

  1166. also

  1167. shall bear

  1168. the image

  1169. of the

  1170. man

  1171. of heaven

  1172. Jesus

  1173. came

  1174. so that

  1175. any

  1176. ruined

  1177. broken

  1178. dirty

  1179. sinner

  1180. like me

  1181. who

  1182. trusts

  1183. in

  1184. Christ

  1185. would

  1186. be

  1187. remade

  1188. into

  1189. the

  1190. image

  1191. of

  1192. Christ

  1193. who

  1194. is

  1195. the

  1196. image

  1197. of

  1198. God

  1199. friend

  1200. if you're

  1201. not a

  1202. believer

  1203. I have

  1204. good news

  1205. for you

  1206. there is a

  1207. way

  1208. for you

  1209. to be

  1210. restored

  1211. back to

  1212. your

  1213. original

  1214. design

  1215. to be

  1216. forgiven

  1217. totally

  1218. of all

  1219. the many

  1220. ways

  1221. you don't

  1222. look like

  1223. God

  1224. and to

  1225. begin to

  1226. see

  1227. his

  1228. glorious

  1229. image

  1230. restored

  1231. in

  1232. you

  1233. and it's

  1234. this

  1235. would you

  1236. come to

  1237. Christ

  1238. and repent

  1239. of your

  1240. sin

  1241. and trust

  1242. fully

  1243. in him

  1244. and believer

  1245. you are

  1246. called

  1247. to be

  1248. conformed

  1249. to the

  1250. image

  1251. of his

  1252. son

  1253. you are

  1254. called

  1255. to

  1256. exercise

  1257. dominion

  1258. you are

  1259. called

  1260. to put

  1261. sin

  1262. to death

  1263. and you

  1264. are called

  1265. to fill

  1266. the earth

  1267. with the

  1268. image

  1269. of God

  1270. by multiplying

  1271. and making

  1272. disciples

  1273. of all

  1274. nations

  1275. and so

  1276. we have

  1277. to ask

  1278. ourselves

  1279. don't

  1280. we

  1281. how are

  1282. we doing

  1283. here

  1284. are we

  1285. putting

  1286. on

  1287. what looks

  1288. like our

  1289. father

  1290. are we

  1291. representing

  1292. him

  1293. in our

  1294. families

  1295. and in the

  1296. world

  1297. are we

  1298. allowing

  1299. anything

  1300. else

  1301. to define

  1302. us

  1303. and give

  1304. us our

  1305. worth

  1306. and shape

  1307. our identity

  1308. other than

  1309. the glorious

  1310. good news

  1311. that we

  1312. belong to

  1313. him

  1314. through faith

  1315. in Christ

  1316. to be

  1317. made in

  1318. his image

  1319. is an

  1320. incredible

  1321. gift

  1322. what an

  1323. honor

  1324. and when

  1325. we think

  1326. about this

  1327. take the

  1328. time to

  1329. meditate

  1330. on this

  1331. our response

  1332. ought to be

  1333. like the

  1334. psalmist

  1335. in psalm

    Psalms 8 chapter mention

  1336. chapter 8

  1337. I want to

  1338. close by

  1339. reading this

  1340. to you

  1341. oh lord

  1342. our lord

  1343. how majestic

  1344. is your name

  1345. in all the

  1346. earth

  1347. you have set

  1348. your glory

  1349. above the

  1350. heavens

  1351. out of the

  1352. mouth of

  1353. babies and

  1354. infants you

  1355. have established

  1356. strength because

  1357. of your foes

  1358. to still the

  1359. enemy and the

  1360. avenger

  1361. when I look

  1362. at your

  1363. heavens

  1364. the work

  1365. of your

  1366. fingers

  1367. the moon

  1368. and the

  1369. stars which

  1370. you have set

  1371. in place

  1372. what is

  1373. man that

  1374. you are

  1375. mindful of

  1376. him and

  1377. the son of

  1378. man that

  1379. you care

  1380. for him

  1381. yet you

  1382. have made

  1383. him a little

  1384. lower than

  1385. the heavenly

  1386. beings and

  1387. crowned him

  1388. with glory

  1389. and honor

  1390. you have

  1391. given him

  1392. dominion over

  1393. the works

  1394. of your

  1395. hands

  1396. you have

  1397. put all

  1398. things under

  1399. his feet

  1400. all sheep

  1401. and oxen

  1402. and also the

  1403. beasts of

  1404. the field

  1405. the birds

  1406. of the heavens

  1407. the fish

  1408. of the sea

  1409. whatever

  1410. passes along

  1411. the paths

  1412. of the seas

  1413. oh lord

  1414. our lord

  1415. how majestic

  1416. is your name

  1417. in all the

  1418. earth

  1419. let's pray

  1420. father god

  1421. what a

  1422. incredible

  1423. privilege

  1424. that we

  1425. would bear

  1426. your image

  1427. what an

  1428. incredible

  1429. responsibility

  1430. that we

  1431. have to

  1432. represent you

  1433. here on

  1434. earth as

  1435. your royal

  1436. representatives

  1437. in all

  1438. creation

  1439. and what an

  1440. incredible gift

  1441. it is

  1442. that the

  1443. image of

  1444. god

  1445. himself

  1446. came to

  1447. remake

  1448. what's been

  1449. broken and

  1450. lost in the

  1451. fall

  1452. we love

  1453. you lord

  1454. we pray

  1455. that we

  1456. would honor

  1457. you as

  1458. your image

  1459. bearers

  1460. we ask

  1461. this in

  1462. jesus name

  1463. amen
