    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  57. from slavery to sin.

  58. Jesus is the one who truly puts an end to our labors.

  59. In Christ, we receive his righteousness by grace through faith,

  60. not by our efforts.

  61. It's Jesus who went to the cross on our behalf,

  62. and on Friday when his work was complete,

  63. what did he say?

  64. It is finished.

  65. His work was done.

  66. He ceased from the work of redemption.

  67. And on Saturday, he rested in the grave.

  68. And on Sunday, he rose again as the beginning of a new age,

  69. a new creation,

  70. ushering in a new covenant

  71. and doing away with the old covenant for good.

  72. Scott Hubbard, he says,

  73. When the stone rolled away from Jesus' tomb on Easter morning,

  74. true Sabbath rest arrived,

  75. and a new day dawned.

  76. So fifth,

  77. lastly,

  78. let's bring it to us.

  79. Where does this leave us?

  80. Church, we are not obligated to keep the Sabbath

  81. because we see that everything the Sabbath was meant to teach us

  82. is found in Christ.

  83. The Sabbath was his big arrows,

  84. as pointing to Jesus,

  85. and now Jesus has come.

  86. Israel, the old covenant,

  87. the Sabbath,

  88. all these are shadows,

  89. but Christ is the substance.

  90. These are all blurry,

  91. black and white images,

  92. but now Christ has come,

  93. and all of his new covenant people,

  94. we get to enjoy the fullness of God's rest in him.

  95. Yes, God still calls you to rest in him,

  96. but no longer by simply setting aside one day out of seven,

  97. but by coming to Christ in faith.

  98. The early church had to wrestle with this, too.

  99. This is one of the questions that they had to settle,

  100. and they had to discuss,

  101. is do we still observe the Sabbath day?

  102. That was a question they had to ask right up there alongside.

  103. Do we still have to be circumcised

  104. in order to be a part of the people of God?

  105. And here's what they said.

  106. Paul says in Colossians chapter 2,

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  107. Let no one pass judgment on you

  108. in questions of food and drink,

  109. or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.

  110. These are a shadow of the things to come,

  111. but the substance belongs to Christ.

  112. And he tells the church in Rome,

  113. Romans 14, verse 5,

    Romans 14:5

  114. he says,

  115. One person esteems one day as better than another,

  116. while another esteems all days alike.

  117. Look, each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

  118. That would not fly in the old covenant, would it?

  119. It used to be do this or die.

  120. And now he says,

  121. Christ has come and you are free.

  122. Don't judge each other.

  123. Live in the freedom that Christ has purchased for you in the gospel.

  124. Live according to your convictions.

  125. Something has happened that has drastically changed this dynamic

  126. and this concept of Sabbath rest.

  127. And that something clearly is the resurrection of Jesus.

  128. In fact, the early church,

  129. they began a totally new practice

  130. in light of the resurrection of Jesus.

  131. They began to gather

  132. and to worship together on the Lord's day.

  133. Sunday.

  134. You wonder why we as Christians gather

  135. and worship on Sunday morning

  136. and not on Saturday.

  137. Sunday is the Lord's day.

  138. This is resurrection day.

  139. It wasn't a new Sabbath day.

  140. The Sabbath didn't just move forward 24 hours in the clock

  141. from Saturday to Sunday.

  142. This was an entirely new practice.

  143. Gathering with the church

  144. to worship the risen Lord Jesus on the Lord's day.

  145. And guess what, church?

  146. That is a command for Christians.

  147. The author of Hebrews tells us

  148. to not neglect the meeting together

  149. as is the habit of some,

  150. but encourage one another.

  151. And all the more as you see the day drawing near.

  152. And it's here together

  153. that we as a church,

  154. we come together

  155. and we get a foretaste

  156. of the rest of heaven.

  157. For a brief moment in our week,

  158. we set aside our work.

  159. And we join together

  160. with the angels in heaven

  161. and singing songs of praise to the Lord.

  162. We put down our tools.

  163. We pick up our Bibles.

  164. We remember,

  165. we're reminded that God is our creator.

  166. That we are set apart for Him.

  167. That Jesus has come to redeem us

  168. by His own blood.

  169. What a gift we're given.

  170. God extends true rest to us in Christ.

  171. The rest that you and I were made for

  172. is found in Christ.

  173. The early church father, St. Augustine,

  174. he would say it like this.

  175. He said,

  176. our hearts are restless

  177. until we find rest in Thee.

  178. Friend, if you are not a Christian,

  179. Christ invites you this morning.

  180. This invitation is yours.

  181. Come to me.

  182. All who are weary and heavy laden,

  183. come to me.

  184. All you who are burdened down by your sin,

  185. come to me.

  186. All you who are separated from me

  187. by your sin,

  188. come to Christ

  189. and I will give you true rest.

  190. And Christian,

  191. as we grow in our walk with the Lord,

  192. we're constantly bid to do the same thing.

  193. Come to Christ.

  194. Come to Christ.

  195. Come to Christ.

  196. We're called to rest in Him

  197. and it's only in Him,

  198. only by faith in Him

  199. that you will find true rest.

  200. I want you to turn with me

  201. to one more passage as we close.

  202. Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  203. Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  204. Right before this chapter,

  205. the author of Hebrews,

  206. he reminds us that

  207. that many in Israel

  208. failed to enter the promised rest.

  209. That rest in the land of Canaan

  210. was never ultimate.

  211. The invitation was there.

  212. The land was right there in front of them.

  213. But he says that they heard the voice of God

  214. and they hardened their hearts.

  215. And so they didn't enter

  216. because of their unbelief.

  217. Therefore, he says chapter 4.

  218. While the promise of entering His rest

  219. still stands,

  220. let us fear

  221. lest any of you

  222. should seem to have failed to reach it.

  223. For good news came to us

  224. just as to them.

  225. But the message they heard

  226. did not benefit them

  227. because they were not united by faith

  228. with those who listened.

  229. For we who have believed

  230. enter that rest.

  231. As he has said,

  232. verse 6.

  233. Since therefore it remains

  234. for some to enter it.

  235. And those who formerly received

  236. the good news

  237. failed to enter

  238. because of disobedience.

  239. Again,

  240. he appoints a certain day.

  241. Today.

  242. Saying through David

  243. so long afterward.

  244. And the words already quoted.

  245. Today.

  246. If you hear his voice,

  247. do not harden your hearts.

  248. For if Joshua had given them rest,

  249. God would not have spoken

  250. of another day later on.

  251. So then,

  252. there remains

  253. a Sabbath rest

  254. for the people of God.

  255. For whoever has entered

  256. God's rest

  257. has also rested

  258. from His works

  259. as God did

  260. from His.

  261. Let us therefore

  262. strive

  263. to enter

  264. that rest

  265. so that no one

  266. may fall

  267. by the same sort

  268. of disobedience.

  269. Church,

  270. as we

  271. think on this theme

  272. of God's rest,

  273. we can make all sorts

  274. of applications

  275. about resting

  276. and working,

  277. taking a day off

  278. every now and then,

  279. getting a nap,

  280. turning off your phone,

  281. going for a walk

  282. in the woods.

  283. All of that is well

  284. and good.

  285. But there's something

  286. infinitely more serious

  287. at stake here.

  288. I need you to listen.

  289. God has spoken

  290. to you today

  291. through His Word.

  292. And He has extended

  293. to you

  294. this promise.

  295. Here it is again.

  296. Come to Christ.

  297. Come to Christ

  298. and find true rest.

  299. Leave behind

  300. the chaos

  301. and the striving

  302. of this world.

  303. Lay aside

  304. the burden

  305. of sin.

  306. Come to Christ

  307. and He will give you

  308. true rest

  309. for your souls.

  310. He is the rest

  311. that you were made for.

  312. Today you have heard

  313. His voice.

  314. Do not harden

  315. your hearts.

  316. Those who believe

  317. will enter

  318. the rest

  319. God has provided

  320. for us in Christ.

  321. Those who believe

  322. will enter

  323. His rest.

  324. Today,

  325. if you hear

  326. His voice,

  327. do not

  328. harden

  329. your hearts.

  330. rest,

  331. there remains

  332. a Sabbath rest

  333. for the people

  334. of God.

  335. And today,

  336. today you may

  337. enter true rest

  338. by faith in Christ.

  339. A perfect rest

  340. that we who know

  341. the Lord

  342. will enjoy

  343. in full

  344. at His return

  345. in a new

  346. and better Eden.

  347. But we who

  348. know the Lord

  349. can enjoy

  350. and enter that rest

  351. and taste it

  352. even partially

  353. here right now

  354. through faith

  355. in Christ.

  356. let us

  357. therefore strive

  358. to enter that rest

  359. by hearing

  360. and believing

  361. by coming

  362. to Christ

  363. the Lord

  364. of the Sabbath.

  365. Let's pray.

  366. Father,

  367. what a joy

  368. it is

  369. and what a

  370. restful thing

  371. it is to know

  372. that our sins

  373. are forgiven.

  374. in Christ.

  375. That our deepest

  376. and hardest

  377. and greatest

  378. efforts

  379. our best works

  380. it can't bring us

  381. one inch closer

  382. to you

  383. but you've provided

  384. perfect

  385. righteousness

  386. received

  387. not by our

  388. doing

  389. but received

  390. by grace

  391. through faith

  392. and a perfect

  393. Savior

  394. who just bids us

  395. come.

  396. Lord,

  397. we pray

  398. if there are

  399. any with us

  400. this morning

  401. who do not

  402. know you

  403. would you

  404. would you

  405. lead them

  406. Lord

  407. to believe

  408. to listen

  409. to this

  410. invitation

  411. and to come

  412. to Christ

  413. and Father

  414. for the church

  415. for us believers

  416. we pray

  417. God

  418. that we would

  419. not be

  420. prone to

  421. wander back

  422. into this

  423. rhythm of

  424. work

  425. and work

  426. and work

  427. of deeds

  428. and deeds

  429. and deeds

  430. of effort

  431. and effort

  432. and effort

  433. but that we

  434. would rest

  435. in Christ.

  436. we love

  437. you Lord

  438. we pray

  439. this in

  440. Jesus name

  441. Amen

  442. Amen
