  1. Can I just say I love to hear the sounds of children in this room. I'm so serious.

  2. This is a blessing to hear children in a church, and it's a sign of life, and there's no better place for them to be than right here.

  3. And by design, we want families to come here and to worship together, and there's no better place for a child to learn what it means to be a part of the church

  4. and to learn what it means to worship than to be right beside mom or dad or grandpa or grandma and to see them worshiping.

  5. So those little coos and awes don't bother me at all. I love it, and the Lord loves it as well.

  6. If you would, let's turn to Genesis. Open up our Bibles to the book of Genesis this morning.

  7. We're continuing our series in Genesis. If this is your first time joining us with us in a while,

  8. we've been walking through the book of Genesis together, so you've missed a little bit, but not that much

  9. because we're in Genesis chapter 2 this morning. We finished our look at this week of creation,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  10. and now we get to see what life was like in the Garden of Eden.

  11. And so our passage this morning is Genesis chapter 2, verses 4 through 17.

    Genesis 2:4–17

  12. If you don't have your own Bible with you, that's okay. We provide Bibles in the seat backs,

  13. either behind you or in front of you.

  14. But I would recommend you to have a copy of God's Word open in front of you as we walk through this passage together.

  15. Genesis 2, verses 4 through 17.

    Genesis 2:4–17

  16. And when you found it, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word this morning.

  17. These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created,

  18. in the day that the Lord God made the earth into heavens.

  19. When no bush of the field was yet in the land, and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up,

  20. for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground,

  21. and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the face of the ground.

  22. Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground,

  23. and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.

  24. And the man became a living creature.

  25. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east,

  26. and there he put the man whom he had formed.

  27. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up

  28. every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.

  29. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden,

  30. and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

  31. A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden,

  32. and there it divided and became four rivers.

  33. The name of the first is the Pishon.

  34. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.

  35. And the gold of that land is good.

  36. Bidellium and onyx stone are there.

  37. The name of the second river is the Gihon.

  38. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush.

  39. And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria.

  40. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

  41. The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

  42. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying,

  43. You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,

  44. but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat.

  45. For in the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die.

  46. Father, we thank you and we praise you for your word.

  47. And we ask now as we sit under it, God, would you teach us and draw us to Christ?

  48. We pray in Jesus' name.

  49. Amen.

  50. Amen.

  51. You may be seated.

  52. For a brief season early on in our marriage before having kids,

  53. I developed a nightly routine where whatever else I was doing,

  54. whatever I had done during that day,

  55. seven o'clock came and I stopped whatever it was I had to do.

  56. I would find my way to the couch and I would turn on the television

  57. and I would watch Wheel of Fortune every single weeknight.

  58. In fact, I got so into Wheel of Fortune that I auditioned for Wheel of Fortune

  59. and I made my way past several preliminary rounds before I was eventually eliminated.

  60. But that's another story for another day.

  61. If you've ever watched Wheel of Fortune, you know that one of the most painful parts of the show

  62. is when it comes to the very last puzzle and the person is there,

  63. all the pressure of the world is on them to solve that last puzzle

  64. and the time is ticking and then it ends and they haven't done it

  65. and they fail to achieve the prize.

  66. And Pat Sajak does this cruel thing where he makes them look at the prize they could have won

  67. had they succeeded.

  68. Sometimes it's a car, sometimes it's a trip,

  69. sometimes it's a whole bunch of money and everybody in the audience

  70. and everybody watching at home just lets out this exasperated groan

  71. as they look at what could have been.

  72. That's a little bit like how it feels reading our passage this morning in Genesis chapter 2,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  73. this picture of a perfect paradise.

  74. It's a picture of a perfect world free from sin.

  75. It's beautiful.

  76. Everything that mankind needs is here.

  77. God is here with man.

  78. It's absolutely perfect.

  79. And it almost hurts to read it because we know deep down

  80. that is how things are supposed to be.

  81. This is what we should be enjoying right now.

  82. But you and I and Adam in our place, we have lost out on the prize.

  83. What we see here in Genesis chapter 2 is a brief glimpse,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  84. this window into a perfect world.

  85. This is a brief glimpse of what the world looked like before sin comes in

  86. and wrecks the whole thing.

  87. And we see a brief glimpse of God's design for the universe.

  88. And the big picture for our passage this morning is this.

  89. God created man to enjoy paradise with him in covenant relationship.

  90. That's the big idea this morning.

  91. I'll say it again.

  92. God created man to enjoy paradise with him in covenant relationship.

  93. So let's look at our text and we'll see what was life like in the Garden of Eden.

  94. First, we see life in the Garden came with great blessing.

  95. Life in the Garden came with great blessing.

  96. Look there with me starting in verse 4.

  97. And you notice that it begins with this heading here.

  98. It says,

  99. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created

  100. in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

  101. This is sort of like a header of a new section of the book.

  102. You'll see this over and over and over again as we walk our way through Genesis.

  103. And it's an organizational tool.

  104. That's a good reminder.

  105. It's a good indicator for us that we're entering into a new section of the book.

  106. Which explains in part why we're circling back now to some of the topics that we've already addressed.

  107. And we finished last week, this whole week of creation.

  108. God worked six days in creating the world.

  109. And then he rested on the seventh day.

  110. But now it's like we're going backwards, aren't we?

  111. And we get another look here at the world being formed.

  112. He says,

  113. When no bush of the field was yet in the land,

  114. and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up,

  115. for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land,

  116. and there was no man to work the ground,

  117. and a mist was going up from the land,

  118. and was watering the whole face of the ground.

  119. This is sort of a recap, isn't it?

  120. And you might wonder,

  121. well, why are we coming back to that same material again?

  122. And why does it sound just a little bit different than the first account?

  123. And again, this is just sort of how Hebrew literature works.

  124. It's not linear in a straight line like you and I tend to think.

  125. It's more circular.

  126. It comes back around,

  127. and it focuses in on something in more detail,

  128. or from a different perspective.

  129. That's what we see here.

  130. And the point is, in this section,

  131. is to show us, again, the prize that we should have won.

  132. This is the good, perfect creation that we, by design, are meant to enjoy.

  133. This is what we could have had.

  134. Now, look with me at all the blessings that Adam gets to enjoy here in the garden.

  135. For one, Adam gets to enjoy the blessing of God's design in the garden.

  136. He gets to enjoy the blessing of God's formation of the universe by His Word.

  137. If you remember from chapter 1, we saw that, again, God is the main character of this story.

  138. The Bible begins with God.

  139. He's the focus of the Bible.

  140. He's the focus of creation.

  141. The whole Bible is not about us.

  142. It's about God.

  143. The creation is not about us.

  144. It's about God.

  145. He's the main actor.

  146. And we see Him acting time and time and time again throughout this account.

  147. The plants haven't grown because God hasn't caused it to rain, verse 5.

  148. God forms the man from dust, verse 7.

  149. He breathes life into him, verse 7.

  150. God plants a garden, verse 8.

  151. He puts man in the garden, verse 8.

  152. God makes the trees to spring up, verse 9.

  153. God speaks and He gives commands to the man, verse 16.

  154. It is clear to me that the emphasis here is that this is God's world.

  155. God's at the center of it.

  156. He's the main character of the story, and Adam simply gets to enjoy it.

  157. It's a blessing for man.

  158. He simply gets to receive and enjoy the world that God has made.

  159. But before he can do that, we see another blessing.

  160. Adam gets to enjoy the blessing of life.

  161. Look there to verse 7 with me.

  162. I love this picture of God creating man.

  163. Look there with me at verse 7.

  164. It says,

  165. The Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground

  166. and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life,

  167. and the man became a living creature.

  168. You know, we should realize that life itself is a blessing

  169. and a gift from God.

  170. Amen?

  171. Life itself is a blessing from God,

  172. an undeserved blessing from God.

  173. We tend to think that life itself is a right, don't we?

  174. Our Declaration of Independence, what does it say?

  175. We hold these truths to be self-evident,

  176. that all men have this fundamental right to life and liberty

  177. and the pursuit of happiness, it says.

  178. And while that may be true on a horizontal man-to-man level

  179. between us and God, that is not true.

  180. God does not owe us life.

  181. God does not owe us liberty.

  182. God does not owe us pursuit of any sort of joy or happiness.

  183. All of this is a good blessing and a gift from God.

  184. Every day that we have life is a gift.

  185. We shouldn't presume upon our next breath.

  186. We shouldn't presume upon our waking up tomorrow morning.

  187. And every moment we have is a gift and a blessing from God.

  188. We get to see this clearly here.

  189. We also get to see where man comes from.

  190. This is sort of mankind's origin story here.

  191. It says we come from the dust of the ground.

  192. God has taken mankind like a potter with clay

  193. and molded us as his creation.

  194. There's a song that we sometimes sing here.

  195. It's called,

  196. My Worth is Not in What I Own.

  197. And it's got this line that I love.

  198. He says,

  199. Two wonders here that I confess.

  200. My worth and my unworthiness.

  201. And we see both represented here, don't we?

  202. We're dust.

  203. Our unworthiness is on display here.

  204. We come from the dust.

  205. We're not evolved creatures.

  206. We can't find our origins in anything in the animal kingdom.

  207. That's actually a step too high, isn't it?

  208. We come from the dust of the ground.

  209. We ought to be humbled by this.

  210. And yet, we also see that God has taken us from dust

  211. and he's molded us and he's embedded within each one of us

  212. this undeniable worth.

  213. That every single one of us,

  214. man, woman, boy, girl, child, adult, believer, non-believer,

  215. every single one of us is made in the image of God.

  216. Adam gets to enjoy this blessing of life from God himself.

  217. And then we see that Adam gets to enjoy the blessing of a perfect land.

  218. The Garden of Eden is a perfect paradise for him to enjoy.

  219. We see verses 8 through 14 show us this glorious garden paradise.

  220. Look there with me to verse 8.

  221. It says, God planted a garden.

  222. Just imagine that with me.

  223. God planted a garden.

  224. In my family, when we lived in Myrtle Beach area,

  225. we used to go to Brook Green Gardens.

  226. I can hardly pronounce it.

  227. You know what I'm talking about.

  228. Brook Green Gardens is beautiful.

  229. We love to walk around there and see the plants

  230. and the beauty of this garden.

  231. Man can create some beautiful gardens,

  232. but just imagine God planted a garden.

  233. Man, we see that he caused to spring up every tree that's pleasant to the sight.

  234. It's beautiful to look at.

  235. It's pretty.

  236. It's full of color and life and vibrant.

  237. And it says it's good for food.

  238. It's not just good to look at.

  239. It's good to eat.

  240. Adam could take food whenever he pleased.

  241. Everything Adam needed was right there at arm's reach.

  242. You see, the land was well watered.

  243. You have these four rivers flowing through.

  244. It's full of gold and precious gems.

  245. It's just absolutely beautiful.

  246. You imagine this.

  247. Anything Adam could have possibly wanted or needed,

  248. God had already thought of it.

  249. And he placed it right there for him to enjoy in the garden.

  250. Now, stop for just a minute

  251. and think about how Israel would have responded to this

  252. when they read this account.

  253. Do you remember where they are?

  254. Do you remember where they are when they're receiving the book of Genesis?

  255. Moses is compiling this for them

  256. and they're reading this as they're in the wilderness,

  257. in the desert,

  258. journeying through the desert.

  259. On the way to the promised land.

  260. How would they feel as they read this account

  261. of this lush and beautiful and abundant garden

  262. with all the food they need?

  263. It's green.

  264. It's lovely.

  265. It's pretty.

  266. And they're here in the desert.

  267. Surely they would just groan and feel this sense of sorrow.

  268. How in the world could we have lost all of this?

  269. What happened?

  270. This is what we could have had?

  271. This is what we were made for?

  272. And look how far we've fallen from this state of blessing.

  273. Now to this.

  274. There is this infinite gulf between what Adam enjoyed in the Garden of Eden

  275. and what Israel endured in the desert.

  276. And here as we zoom forward to us a few thousand years later,

  277. that gulf is still there, isn't it?

  278. I don't know about you.

  279. I don't live in a perfect garden paradise.

  280. My life is not perfect.

  281. The place where I live is not perfect.

  282. There's things that aren't quite right.

  283. I don't have everything that I think I need.

  284. There's an infinite gulf between what Adam enjoyed in the Garden

  285. and what we experience, isn't there, in our day-to-day life.

  286. We should read this text

  287. and feel a sense of loss.

  288. This is what could have been.

  289. This is what should be.

  290. C.S. Lewis has this quote.

  291. I'm going to butcher it.

  292. He says something like,

  293. if we find ourselves to have a desire

  294. that nothing in this world can satisfy,

  295. the most probable explanation

  296. is that we were made for another world.

  297. It's the world that we see in Genesis chapter 2.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  298. We were made to enjoy paradise

  299. in covenant relationship with God, our Creator,

  300. but because of our sin,

  301. we have forfeited our right to the prize.

  302. You know, it's tempting sometimes, isn't it?

  303. When we look at our lives

  304. and we look around at the world that we live in

  305. and we see all the broken things inside of us

  306. and without,

  307. it's tempting for us to blame God for all of that, isn't it?

  308. I mean, Israel did that.

  309. Lord, why have you brought us out into the wilderness

  310. to die out here?

  311. It's tempting for us to look out and to blame God,

  312. but we look at Genesis 2

  313. and an honest reading would show us

  314. that God has designed blessing for us.

  315. God's design is that

  316. we were made to enjoy paradise with Him

  317. in covenant relationship.

  318. But second,

  319. second, what we see here in verses 15 through 17

  320. is that all of this was conditional.

  321. There are conditions

  322. that must be met

  323. for Adam to continue in this garden paradise.

  324. So second,

  325. second, we see life in the garden

  326. came with great responsibility.

  327. Life in the garden came with great responsibility.

  328. Verse 15, look there with me.

  329. He says,

  330. Then the Lord God took man

  331. and put him in the garden

  332. to cultivate it and keep it.

  333. The Lord God commanded the man,

  334. saying,

  335. From any tree of the garden

  336. you may eat freely,

  337. but from the tree of the knowledge

  338. of good and evil

  339. you shall not eat,

  340. for in the day that you eat from it

  341. you will surely die.

  342. God here is very clearly

  343. laying out the conditions here for Adam.

  344. This is the word of the Lord.

  345. Adam's enjoyment of this garden paradise

  346. was conditional.

  347. If he obeys the word of the Lord perfectly,

  348. then he gets to enjoy the blessings

  349. of this garden paradise forever.

  350. But if he disobeys the word of the Lord,

  351. even in one part,

  352. the day you eat of it again,

  353. you shall surely die.

  354. This is the word of God.

  355. And we should realize also,

  356. this is a blessing here as well,

  357. isn't it?

  358. Here before the fall,

  359. here before sin enters the world,

  360. the presence of God

  361. is here with Adam

  362. and the word of God

  363. is there.

  364. They're guiding Adam.

  365. God delivers the word of the Lord

  366. to Adam here

  367. even before sin enters the world.

  368. It's a blessing.

  369. Man from the beginning

  370. is given the word of the Lord.

  371. He is bound to the word of God.

  372. He's governed by the word of God.

  373. He's subject to it.

  374. Here in the beginning,

  375. God declares by his word

  376. for Adam what's good

  377. and what's right.

  378. And Adam is created

  379. with the capacity

  380. to listen

  381. and to obey the word of the Lord.

  382. and the expectation

  383. that he should,

  384. he must do so.

  385. All of this is very good.

  386. It's God's design.

  387. Sometimes the law of the Lord especially,

  388. it gets a bad rap, doesn't it?

  389. And we kind of talk about the law

  390. like it's a burden

  391. and our sin,

  392. especially on this side of the fall,

  393. it makes us say,

  394. well, that's restrictive.

  395. That's too much.

  396. Why can't God just let us do what we want?

  397. But the law of the Lord,

  398. when we understand it rightly,

  399. it's not a burden,

  400. it's a blessing

  401. and a gift.

  402. And we go home this afternoon

  403. and read Psalm 119

  404. and you tell me

  405. the impression you get

  406. of how Israel and David

  407. felt about the law of the Lord.

  408. Blessed are those

  409. whose way is blameless,

  410. who walk in the law of the Lord,

  411. he says.

  412. I will praise you

  413. with an upright heart

  414. when I learn your righteous rules.

  415. How can a young man

  416. keep his way pure?

  417. By guarding it

  418. according to your word.

  419. With my whole heart,

  420. I seek you.

  421. Let me not wonder

  422. from your commandments.

  423. I have stored up your word

  424. in my heart

  425. that I might not sin

  426. against you.

  427. Blessed are you,

  428. O Lord.

  429. Teach me your statutes.

  430. With my lips,

  431. I declare all the rules

  432. of your mouth.

  433. In the way of your testimonies,

  434. I delight as much

  435. as in all riches.

  436. I will meditate

  437. on your precepts

  438. and fix my eyes

  439. on your ways.

  440. I will delight

  441. in your statutes.

  442. I will not forget

  443. your word.

  444. The law of the Lord

  445. is a wonderful gift

  446. for God's people.

  447. I wonder if you love

  448. the word like this

  449. or if it feels

  450. like a burden

  451. to you.

  452. The law of the Lord

  453. here is a blessing.

  454. It's a gift for Adam

  455. and Adam is meant

  456. to live by it.

  457. And again,

  458. if he does perfectly,

  459. if he perfectly obeys

  460. the law of the Lord,

  461. he gets to enjoy

  462. all of these

  463. wonderful blessings.

  464. And we see here

  465. there's a positive command

  466. and a negative command,

  467. isn't there?

  468. There is something to do

  469. and something not to do.

  470. What must he do?

  471. Verse 15.

  472. Literally,

  473. verse 15,

  474. it says,

  475. God put man in the garden

  476. to serve and obey.

  477. And we saw a couple

  478. of weeks ago,

  479. didn't we?

  480. This blessing of work.

  481. Man was made

  482. in God's image

  483. and he's given this task

  484. of filling the earth

  485. and subduing it,

  486. ruling over it

  487. as God's image bearers.

  488. He was meant

  489. to work as an extension

  490. of God's work

  491. in the world.

  492. That's what he must do.

  493. But there's also

  494. this command

  495. what he must not do,

  496. isn't there?

  497. Look there again

  498. to verse 16.

  499. You may surely eat

  500. of every tree

  501. of the garden,

  502. but from the tree

  503. of the knowledge

  504. of good and evil

  505. you shall not eat.

  506. For in the day

  507. you eat of it

  508. you shall surely die.

  509. Now,

  510. we've got to think

  511. about this for a second.

  512. Because there is

  513. something here

  514. in the garden

  515. of Eden,

  516. in perfect paradise,

  517. that man is told

  518. he must not do.

  519. Have you ever thought

  520. about this?

  521. We need to grasp this.

  522. Because for many of us,

  523. our idea of paradise,

  524. if we could draw up

  525. our perfect paradise,

  526. our version of Eden,

  527. it would be that

  528. nobody can tell us

  529. what to do

  530. or not to do.

  531. Our vision of perfection,

  532. our vision of paradise

  533. is that we are

  534. absolutely free

  535. and autonomous.

  536. We are a law

  537. unto ourselves.

  538. Our vision of

  539. a perfect paradise

  540. is that nobody

  541. can tell us what to do

  542. and nobody can deny me

  543. of what I want.

  544. but here in a perfect world,

  545. here in paradise

  546. before the fall,

  547. God tells man,

  548. don't do that.

  549. God,

  550. by his word,

  551. he put boundaries

  552. and limits in place

  553. that are good for us,

  554. for our flourishing

  555. and for our life

  556. that we might thrive

  557. with him in relationship.

  558. He tells the oceans

  559. to go here

  560. and no further.

  561. He tells the sun

  562. to stay there

  563. and to shine.

  564. He tells the stars

  565. to go here

  566. and he tells man,

  567. don't eat of that tree

  568. because the second

  569. he does so,

  570. here's the warning.

  571. All of this blessing

  572. for him

  573. is lost

  574. but not just for him.

  575. Here's what we need

  576. to understand.

  577. This is why this account

  578. matters for you,

  579. for us this morning.

  580. Not just for him.

  581. All of this will be lost

  582. for him

  583. and all of this

  584. will be lost

  585. for us.

  586. Our hope

  587. of enjoying

  588. this garden paradise

  589. with God,

  590. it hangs in the balance

  591. on whether or not

  592. Adam can do

  593. what he's told to do.

  594. And the reason why

  595. is because third,

  596. third,

  597. life in the garden

  598. is defined

  599. by something called

  600. covenant.

  601. It's defined

  602. by covenant.

  603. covenant.

  604. You remember

  605. the big picture

  606. here?

  607. God created man

  608. to enjoy paradise

  609. with him

  610. in covenant

  611. relationship.

  612. Covenant

  613. relationship.

  614. We tend to

  615. complicate this.

  616. It seems like

  617. an overwhelming,

  618. scary topic

  619. to talk about

  620. but really

  621. it's not that

  622. complicated

  623. because everything

  624. that we just

  625. described

  626. this whole time

  627. we've been sitting

  628. here

  629. is what it means

  630. to be in

  631. covenant.

  632. In the Bible

  633. covenants

  634. define

  635. relationships.

  636. And we just

  637. got done with

  638. Valentine's Day.

  639. Right?

  640. All over the world

  641. men and women

  642. are thinking

  643. they need to sit

  644. down and have

  645. the DTR talk.

  646. You know what that is?

  647. They need to define

  648. the relationship.

  649. We need to

  650. come to terms

  651. on how I relate

  652. to you

  653. and you relate

  654. to me.

  655. I need to understand

  656. the relationship here.

  657. Are we boyfriend,

  658. girlfriend?

  659. What is this

  660. relationship that

  661. we're in?

  662. In the Bible

  663. God defines

  664. the relationship

  665. by way of

  666. covenant.

  667. Ligon Duncan

  668. defines it like this.

  669. He says a covenant

  670. is a special

  671. relationship

  672. established

  673. and bestowed

  674. by God

  675. that has

  676. blessings

  677. and obligations.

  678. And it is

  679. of life

  680. and death

  681. significance.

  682. significance.

  683. You may feel

  684. like your

  685. boyfriend,

  686. girlfriend's

  687. situation

  688. is of life

  689. and death

  690. significance.

  691. It's not

  692. quite there.

  693. In the Bible

  694. though,

  695. a covenant

  696. is a special

  697. relationship

  698. established

  699. and bestowed

  700. by God

  701. that has

  702. blessings

  703. and obligations

  704. and is

  705. of life

  706. and death

  707. significance.

  708. And isn't

  709. that what we

  710. see here

  711. in the

  712. garden?

  713. Isn't

  714. that what

  715. we've

  716. just seen?

  717. Here in

  718. the garden

  719. of Eden

  720. we see

  721. that God

  722. has defined

  723. the relationship

  724. between him

  725. and Adam

  726. in what we

  727. call the

  728. covenant

  729. of works.

  730. God

  731. initiates

  732. this

  733. relationship.

  734. God

  735. establishes

  736. the terms.

  737. God

  738. makes

  739. these big

  740. promises.

  741. Eternal

  742. life.

  743. Life

  744. forever

  745. in the

  746. garden.

  747. And God

  748. says here

  749. is what

  750. you must

  751. do in

  752. order to

  753. enjoy

  754. all of

  755. this.

  756. If you

  757. succeed

  758. you get

  759. to enjoy

  760. all the

  761. benefits

  762. of

  763. eternal

  764. life

  765. and

  766. paradise.

  767. But if

  768. you

  769. fail

  770. then

  771. guess

  772. what?

  773. You

  774. die.

  775. But again

  776. not just

  777. you,

  778. not just

  779. Adam,

  780. it's you

  781. and everyone

  782. whom you

  783. represent.

  784. You and

  785. everyone

  786. who descends

  787. from you.

  788. This covenant

  789. here in the

  790. garden with

  791. all of its

  792. promised

  793. blessings

  794. and all

  795. of its

  796. promised

  797. consequences

  798. it

  799. includes

  800. us.

  801. It

  802. defines

  803. our

  804. relationship

  805. with God.

  806. You want

  807. to know

  808. why we're

  809. not in

  810. the garden

  811. of Eden

  812. this morning?

  813. It's

  814. because

  815. Adam

  816. has

  817. failed

  818. in our

  819. place.

  820. You want

  821. to know

  822. why we

  823. don't

  824. enjoy

  825. perfect

  826. paradise

  827. and

  828. in

  829. right

  830. relationship

  831. with

  832. the

  833. Lord?

  834. It's

  835. because

  836. we

  837. are

  838. included

  839. by

  840. natural

  841. right

  842. in

  843. Adam.

  844. Adam

  845. has

  846. failed

  847. as our

  848. representative

  849. and so

  850. now

  851. his

  852. sin

  853. is

  854. our

  855. sin.

  856. His

  857. failure

  858. is

  859. our

  860. failure.

  861. His

  862. punishment

  863. is

  864. our

  865. punishment.

  866. We

  867. don't

  868. enter

  869. the

  870. world

  871. on

  872. neutral

  873. terms

  874. with

  875. God.

  876. We

  877. enter

  878. the

  879. world

  880. in

  881. covenant

  882. with

  883. God

  884. that's

  885. been

  886. broken

  887. already

  888. in

  889. Adam.

  890. This is

  891. bad news.

  892. Is it

  893. not?

  894. This is

  895. bad news.

  896. God

  897. if it

  898. sounds

  899. unfair

  900. to

  901. you

  902. that

  903. we

  904. might

  905. enter

  906. on

  907. negative

  908. terms

  909. with

  910. God

  911. that

  912. we

  913. might

  914. have

  915. no

  916. chance

  917. in

  918. our

  919. own

  920. right

  921. of

  922. earning

  923. our

  924. way

  925. to

  926. right

  927. relationship

  928. with

  929. the

  930. Lord.

  931. Just wait

  932. till I

  933. tell you

  934. about

  935. the

  936. good

  937. news.

  938. The

  939. good

  940. news

  941. of the

  942. gospel

  943. is

  944. that

  945. God

  946. has

  947. made

  948. a

  949. way

  950. to

  951. bring

  952. us

  953. back

  954. into

  955. covenant

  956. relationship

  957. with

  958. him

  959. by

  960. sending

  961. his

  962. own

  963. son

  964. Jesus

  965. as

  966. the

  967. head

  968. of

  969. a

  970. new

  971. and

  972. better

  973. covenant.

  974. So

  975. Jesus

  976. Christ

  977. has

  978. come

  979. to

  980. redeem

  981. what

  982. Adam

  983. has

  984. lost.

  985. This

  986. is

  987. why

  988. we

  989. call

  990. Jesus

  991. the

  992. true

  993. and

  994. better

  995. Adam.

  996. Did

  997. you

  998. hear

  999. what

  1000. we

  1001. just

  1002. sang

  1003. moments

  1004. ago?

  1005. He

  1006. the

  1007. true

  1008. and

  1009. better

  1010. Adam

  1011. come

  1012. to

  1013. save

  1014. the

  1015. hell

  1016. bound

  1017. man

  1018. Jesus

  1019. is

  1020. the

  1021. true

  1022. and

  1023. better

  1024. Adam

  1025. because

  1026. unlike

  1027. us

  1028. Jesus

  1029. doesn't

  1030. inherit

  1031. Adam's

  1032. natural

  1033. guilt.

  1034. He's

  1035. born

  1036. of a

  1037. virgin.

  1038. He's

  1039. born

  1040. without

  1041. our

  1042. sin

  1043. nature.

  1044. And

  1045. what we

  1046. see

  1047. is that

  1048. unlike

  1049. Adam

  1050. and

  1051. unlike

  1052. all

  1053. of

  1054. us

  1055. Christ

  1056. Jesus

  1057. has

  1058. perfectly

  1059. obeyed

  1060. the

  1061. law

  1062. of

  1063. God.

  1064. Positive

  1065. and

  1066. negative.

  1067. He

  1068. has

  1069. positively

  1070. obeyed

  1071. everything

  1072. God

  1073. commanded

  1074. !

  1075. And

  1076. he

  1077. has

  1078. avoided

  1079. !

  1080. Every

  1081. temptation

  1082. and

  1083. every

  1084. sin.

  1085. He's

  1086. tempted

  1087. and

  1088. tried

  1089. in

  1090. every

  1091. way

  1092. as

  1093. we

  1094. are

  1095. yet

  1096. without

  1097. sin.

  1098. And

  1099. Jesus

  1100. Christ

  1101. the

  1102. true

  1103. and

  1104. better

  1105. Adam

  1106. he

  1107. lived

  1108. the

  1109. perfect

  1110. life

  1111. that

  1112. you

  1113. and

  1114. I

  1115. should

  1116. have

  1117. lived

  1118. !

  1119. And

  1120. he

  1121. died

  1122. the

  1123. sinner's

  1124. death

  1125. that

  1126. you

  1127. and

  1128. I

  1129. deserve

  1130. to

  1131. die.

  1132. You

  1133. want

  1134. to

  1135. talk

  1136. about

  1137. unfair?

  1138. This

  1139. is

  1140. unfair!

  1141. Jesus

  1142. says

  1143. how

  1144. about

  1145. I

  1146. take

  1147. on

  1148. all

  1149. of

  1150. the

  1151. punishment

  1152. that

  1153. you

  1154. have

  1155. earned

  1156. and

  1157. I'll

  1158. just

  1159. give

  1160. you

  1161. all

  1162. of

  1163. the

  1164. eternal

  1165. life

  1166. and

  1167. righteousness

  1168. that

  1169. I've

  1170. earned!

  1171. How

  1172. about

  1173. that

  1174. deal?

  1175. I

  1176. will

  1177. become

  1178. a

  1179. curse

  1180. for

  1181. you

  1182. so

  1183. that

  1184. in

  1185. me

  1186. you

  1187. might

  1188. become

  1189. the

  1190. righteousness

  1191. of

  1192. God

  1193. who

  1194. can

  1195. be

  1196. blessed

  1197. in

  1198. me

  1199. he

  1200. says

  1201. he

  1202. made

  1203. him

  1204. who

  1205. knew

  1206. no

  1207. sin

  1208. to

  1209. become

  1210. sin

  1211. for

  1212. us

  1213. so

  1214. that

  1215. in

  1216. him

  1217. we

  1218. might

  1219. become

  1220. the

  1221. righteousness

  1222. of

  1223. God

  1224. all

  1225. you

  1226. have

  1227. to

  1228. do

  1229. is

  1230. simply

  1231. repent

  1232. of your

  1233. sin

  1234. and

  1235. trust

  1236. in

  1237. Christ

  1238. come

  1239. to

  1240. him

  1241. in

  1242. faith

  1243. you

  1244. know

  1245. this

  1246. is

  1247. why

  1248. try

  1249. harder

  1250. just

  1251. this

  1252. doesn't

  1253. cut

  1254. it

  1255. does

  1256. it

  1257. any

  1258. sort

  1259. of

  1260. works

  1261. righteousness

  1262. I'm

  1263. just

  1264. trying

  1265. to

  1266. be

  1267. a

  1268. better

  1269. Christian

  1270. I'm

  1271. trying

  1272. to

  1273. better

  1274. myself

  1275. I

  1276. just

  1277. want

  1278. to be

  1279. a good

  1280. Christian

  1281. person

  1282. none

  1283. of that

  1284. none

  1285. of that

  1286. works

  1287. it

  1288. doesn't

  1289. cut

  1290. it

  1291. you

  1292. can't

  1293. better

  1294. yourself

  1295. into

  1296. paradise

  1297. it's

  1298. impossible

  1299. no

  1300. amount

  1301. of

  1302. effort

  1303. you

  1304. put

  1305. in

  1306. will

  1307. get

  1308. you

  1309. one

  1310. inch

  1311. closer

  1312. to

  1313. God

  1314. why

  1315. because

  1316. covenant

  1317. defines

  1318. the

  1319. relationship

  1320. you

  1321. are

  1322. either

  1323. in

  1324. Adam

  1325. or

  1326. you

  1327. are

  1328. in

  1329. Christ

  1330. and

  1331. all

  1332. of

  1333. your

  1334. best

  1335. efforts

  1336. in

  1337. Adam

  1338. are

  1339. worthless

  1340. you

  1341. must

  1342. simply

  1343. come

  1344. to

  1345. Christ

  1346. in

  1347. faith

  1348. and

  1349. say

  1350. I

  1351. can't

  1352. do

  1353. this

  1354. my

  1355. greatest

  1356. efforts

  1357. are

  1358. not

  1359. enough

  1360. I'm

  1361. guilty

  1362. I'm

  1363. a

  1364. sinner

  1365. and

  1366. I

  1367. need

  1368. you

  1369. to

  1370. save

  1371. me

  1372. you

  1373. are

  1374. either

  1375. in

  1376. Adam

  1377. or

  1378. you

  1379. are

  1380. in

  1381. Christ

  1382. Paul

  1383. says

  1384. in

  1385. Romans

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  1386. chapter

  1387. 5

  1388. therefore

  1393. to

  1394. condemnation

  1395. for

  1396. all

  1398. so

  1399. one

  1400. act

  1401. of

  1402. righteousness

  1403. leads

  1404. to

  1405. justification

  1406. and

  1407. life

  1408. for

  1409. all

  1410. men

  1411. for

  1412. as

  1414. the

  1497. the

  1498. free

  1511. that

  1512. free

  1513. gift

  1514. is

  1515. found

  1516. only

  1517. by

  1518. faith

  1519. in

  1520. Jesus

  1521. Christ

  1522. the

  1523. call for

  1524. us

  1525. this

  1526. morning

  1527. church

  1528. if

  1529. you're

  1530. not

  1531. a

  1532. believer

  1533. the

  1534. call

  1535. for

  1536. you

  1537. is

  1538. come

  1539. to

  1540. faith

  1541. in

  1542. Christ

  1543. repent

  1544. of

  1545. your

  1546. sin

  1547. turn

  1548. from

  1549. your

  1550. wicked

  1551. ways

  1552. and

  1553. put

  1554. your

  1555. faith

  1556. in

  1557. the

  1558. Lord

  1559. stop

  1560. trying

  1561. to

  1562. better

  1563. yourself

  1564. you

  1565. can't

  1566. you

  1567. need

  1568. a

  1569. new

  1570. representative

  1571. not

  1572. Adam

  1573. but

  1574. Christ

  1575. Christ

  1576. stands

  1577. here

  1578. with

  1579. open

  1580. arms

  1581. and

  1582. says

  1583. come

  1584. to

  1585. me

  1586. come

  1587. to

  1588. me

  1589. come

  1590. receive

  1591. my

  1592. righteousness

  1593. and

  1594. come

  1595. receive

  1596. eternal

  1597. life

  1598. by

  1599. faith

  1600. alone

  1601. in

  1602. Christ

  1603. alone

  1604. if

  1605. you're

  1606. not

  1607. a

  1608. believer

  1609. come

  1610. to

  1611. Christ

  1612. and it's

  1613. true that

  1614. as

  1615. sinners

  1616. we look at

  1617. Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

1618. and we grieve what we've lost

  1619. but as Christians

  1620. church we can

  1621. look at this passage

  1622. and rejoice

1623. at what Christ has done

  1624. to give us

  1625. in him

  1626. a certain

  1627. hope of a new

  1628. and better

  1629. paradise to come

  1630. where we

  1631. his covenant

  1632. people can enjoy

  1633. God forever

  1634. in paradise

  1635. I want to

  1636. close this

  1637. morning by

  1638. reading from

  1639. Revelation

1640. we're going from the very

  1641. first two chapters

  1642. of the Bible

  1643. to the very last

  1644. two chapters

  1645. of the Bible

  1646. this morning

1647. and I just want you to

  1648. notice again how

  1649. familiar this

  1650. should sound

  1651. this is what

  1652. awaits all of us

  1653. in Christ

  1654. John says

  1655. then I saw a new

  1656. heaven and a new

  1657. earth

  1658. for the first

  1659. heaven and the first

  1660. earth had passed

  1661. away and the sea

  1662. was no more

  1663. and I saw the

  1664. holy city

  1665. the new Jerusalem

  1666. coming down out of

  1667. heaven from God

  1668. prepared as a bride

  1669. !

  1670. I was

  1671. adorned for her

  1672. husband

  1673. and I heard a loud

  1674. voice from the throne

  1675. saying behold

  1676. the dwelling place

  1677. of God

  1678. is with man

  1679. he will dwell

  1680. with them

  1681. and they will be

  1682. his people

  1683. and God himself

  1684. will be with them

  1685. as their God

  1686. he will wipe away

  1687. every tear from

  1688. their eyes

  1689. and death

  1690. shall be no more

  1691. neither shall there

  1692. be mourning

  1693. nor crying

  1694. nor pain

  1695. anymore

  1696. for the former

  1697. things have

  1698. passed away

  1699. and he who is

  1700. seated on the

  1701. throne

  1702. said behold

  1703. I am making

  1704. all things

  1705. new

  1706. chapter 22

  1707. then the angel

  1708. showed me the

  1709. river of the

  1710. water of life

  1711. bright as crystal

  1712. flowing from the

  1713. throne of God

  1714. and of the Lamb

  1715. through the middle

  1716. of the street

  1717. of the city

  1718. also on either

  1719. side of the river

  1720. the tree of life

  1721. with its twelve

  1722. kinds of fruit

  1723. yielding its fruit

  1724. each month

  1725. the leaves of the

  1726. tree were for the

  1727. healing of the

  1728. nations

  1729. no longer will

  1730. there be anything

  1731. accursed

  1732. but the throne

  1733. of God

  1734. and of the Lamb

  1735. will be in it

  1736. and his servants

  1737. will worship

  1738. him

  1739. they will see

  1740. his face

  1741. and his name

  1742. will be on

  1743. their foreheads

  1744. and night

  1745. will be no

  1746. more

  1747. they will need

  1748. no light

  1749. of lamp

  1750. or sun

  1751. for the Lord

  1752. God will be

  1753. their light

  1754. and they will

  1755. reign

  1756. forever

  1757. and ever

  1758. father

  1759. we thank you

  1760. for sending

  1761. Christ

  1762. in our place

  1763. the true

  1764. and better

  1765. Adam

  1766. who lived

  1767. in our place

  1768. and perfectly

  1769. fulfilled

  1770. the law

  1771. of God

  1772. where none

  1773. of us

  1774. can

  1775. Lord

  1776. none of us

  1777. can knock

  1778. down the doors

  1779. of paradise

  1780. but Christ

  1781. has entered

  1782. in on our

  1783. behalf

  1784. so he says

  1785. like he said

  1786. to the thief

  1787. on the cross

  1788. today

  1789. if you believe

  1790. in me

  1791. today

  1792. you will be

  1793. with me

  1794. in paradise

  1795. we thank you

  1796. for Jesus

  1797. Lord

  1798. we confess

  1799. our sin

  1800. to you

  1801. and we thank

  1802. you that

  1803. Jesus

  1804. welcomes

  1805. sinners

  1806. into the

  1807. presence

  1808. of God

  1809. by his

  1810. blood

  1811. the new

  1812. covenant

  1813. we love

  1814. you Lord

  1815. we pray

  1816. this in

  1817. Jesus name

  1818. amen

  1819. through
