  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up to Genesis chapter 3, and this morning we're

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  2. coming to one of the most infamous chapters of the entire Bible.

  3. If you're just now joining us for the first time, we've been walking through the book

  4. of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, and up to this point things have been great.

  5. But now this morning what we see is this good creation that we've seen up to this point

  6. is about to be drastically changed for the worse with the entrance of sin into the world.

  7. So Genesis chapter 3, our passage this morning is verses 1 through 13, and when you found

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  8. that in the Bible, then let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word, Genesis 3, 1

  9. through 13.

  10. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

  11. He said to the woman, did God actually say, you shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  12. And the woman said to the serpent, we may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but

  13. God said, you shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden,

  14. neither shall you touch it, lest you die.

  15. But the serpent said to the woman, you will not surely die, for God knows that when you

  16. eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

  17. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the

  18. eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and

  19. ate, and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate.

  20. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed fig

  21. leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

  22. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the

  23. man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

  24. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, where are you?

  25. And he said, I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked,

  26. and I hid myself.

  27. He said, who told you that you were naked?

  28. Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?

  29. The man said, the woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me the fruit of the tree,

  30. and I ate.

  31. Then the Lord God said to the woman, what is this that you have done?

  32. And the woman said, the serpent deceived me, and I ate.

  33. And Father God, as we open up your word, we pray that we would see clearly here our sin,

  34. our separation from you.

  35. Lord, this is the root cause of all evil in the world and all evil in us.

  36. And so Lord, we pray that we would see it clearly and that it would drive us to Christ in faith.

  37. We pray in Jesus' name.

  38. Amen.

  39. Amen.

  40. You may be seated.

  41. I got lunch with somebody this week who was new to the area, and because it had warmed up just a little bit,

  42. the tiniest bit, we sat outside.

  43. But because we live where we live, we weren't out there long before we were absolutely eaten up by no-see-ums,

  44. and they are back with a vengeance.

  45. I don't know if you noticed.

  46. And as we sat there, he wondered out loud, well, why in the world are these things so bad here?

  47. And I didn't have a scientific explanation to give him.

  48. I'm sure there is one.

  49. But the only explanation I could give him was because all the way back here in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  50. Adam and Eve disobeyed the word of the Lord and plunged God's perfect creation and all of us in it into something called sin.

  51. I don't want to be overly simplistic this morning, but sin is the fundamental explanation for everything that is bad and broken in the world.

  52. All the way from minor inconveniences and things that annoy us like no-see-ums and mosquitoes and poison ivy and things like that,

  53. all the way to the most difficult and terrible things that face all of us in this life.

  54. Questions like, why is my marriage so difficult?

  55. Questions like, well, why do I feel so alone and depressed?

  56. Questions like, well, why do we deal with things like cancer?

  57. Why do we have to face things like death?

  58. And of course, as we think about this on a spiritual level this morning, it's the answer to questions like,

  59. well, why does the Bible say that each and every one of us are by nature separated from God?

  60. Enemies of God.

  61. And why are all of us by nature enemies and under his wrath?

  62. Why does anybody die?

  63. And why does anybody go to this place called hell?

  64. All of these terribly unpopular topics that no one really wants to think about and talk about.

  65. The most basic answer and explanation that we can give for all of these questions is found right here in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  66. With the entrance of sin into the world.

  67. So let's look here at this passage together.

  68. And what we're going to see here this morning is the entrance and the effects of sin.

  69. And this will be our outline this morning.

  70. If you're taking notes, that might help you to follow along.

  71. We'll see the entrance of sin and the effects of sin this morning.

  72. First, we see here the entrance of sin.

  73. Look there with me starting in verse 1.

  74. Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

  75. The tone kind of shifts here in chapter 3, doesn't it?

  76. We've had God's good, perfect paradise up to this point.

  77. And now the presence of this crafty serpent comes onto the scene.

  78. And I'll just go ahead and tell you that there are questions that we have that Genesis simply does not answer.

  79. And it doesn't intend to answer questions like about the origins of evil itself.

  80. Or questions about maybe the fall of Satan.

  81. Genesis doesn't intend to answer these questions.

  82. It puts us after all of that.

  83. And by the time we meet this serpent in the garden, he is already wicked.

  84. And he's already bent on twisting God's good creation.

  85. The focus here is on humanity and how humanity first sinned.

  86. And the effects of that sin on all of creation and on all of us.

  87. So this crafty serpent who we know is Satan, he comes to disrupt this perfect garden paradise.

  88. And he comes with this tried and true playbook of temptation.

  89. And I want you to look with me starting in verse 2.

  90. And I want you to notice four tactics that Satan uses here in the garden.

  91. And I want you to pay attention to this because these are tactics that he still uses today on each and every one of us.

  92. I know we're talking about the very first sin.

  93. But unfortunately, the first sin is not the last sin, is it?

  94. This first temptation is not the last temptation.

  95. What we see here is a mirror-like representation of something that each and every one of us faces in our day-to-day life.

  96. Tactic number one, Satan attacks God's good design.

  97. We've seen over the past several weeks, haven't we, how God ordered and structured his creation in Genesis 1 and 2.

  98. It all began with God.

  99. He is at the top.

  100. He's at the center of all things.

  101. His word is ultimate.

  102. And then God creates Adam and he gives his word to Adam.

  103. And then God creates Eve to be Adam's helper.

  104. And Adam and Eve together are called to rule over the animal kingdom.

  105. You see that structure and that order.

  106. But here's what happens.

  107. It's all completely reversed, isn't it?

  108. The animal comes to the person.

  109. The serpent comes up to the woman.

  110. The woman takes her cues from an animal.

  111. And then Adam takes his cues from the woman.

  112. And nobody's listening to God at all.

  113. Satan is disrupting, upending God's good design from the very beginning.

  114. And he absolutely loves to do this.

  115. Anywhere you see sin present, you will see an attack on God's good design.

  116. We saw last week how we see the effects of this in marriages.

  117. Husbands struggle to lead and to love their wives as they were designed to do.

  118. Wives struggle to help and submit to their husbands as they were designed to do.

  119. Sin comes in and jumbles up and confuses the whole thing.

  120. We see it in churches.

  121. Women stepping into roles of teaching and authority that are reserved for biblically qualified men.

  122. Scripture is not unclear about this.

  123. But again, sin comes in and disrupts God's good design.

  124. But most often, you know where we see this most clearly?

  125. You know where we see this order and this design of God attacked most often?

  126. It's in our own sinful personal rebellion against God.

  127. And we see it in our own lives.

  128. When you and I walk in sin, what we are doing is we're saying to God that you're not the authority here.

  129. I am.

  130. That's what sin is.

  131. Sin isn't just some minor little mistake, a little slip up here and there, doing something that we shouldn't do.

  132. R.C. Sproul, he says that sin is cosmic treason.

  133. Every sin, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is an act of rebellion against the sovereign God who reigns and rules over us.

  134. And as such, is an act of treason against the cosmic king.

  135. Sin always attacks and confuses God's design.

  136. Always.

  137. Wherever you see that order disrupted, you can trace it all the way back right here to the garden.

  138. Tactic number two.

  139. He questions the word of God.

  140. He questions the word of God.

  141. We see that plainly enough here, I think.

  142. But it's so interesting to me.

  143. When you slow down and pay attention to the dialogue here in this account,

  144. you'll begin to notice that this temptation ultimately is a battle over the word of the Lord.

  145. Look at this, verse one.

  146. He says, did God actually say you shall not eat of any tree in the garden?

  147. Now stop there.

  148. Okay, this is a test.

  149. Everybody look up.

  150. Eyes on me.

  151. Don't look at the book.

  152. Okay, I don't tell you to do that often.

  153. Look up at me.

  154. Is that what God said?

  155. Did God actually say you may not eat of any tree?

  156. Is that what God said?

  157. Yes or no?

  158. What God said, you can look back down,

  159. was that they could eat freely of every tree in the garden.

  160. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,

  161. they should not eat of it.

  162. For in the day that they eat of it,

  163. they will surely die.

  164. From the beginning here,

  165. the enemy completely misrepresents the word of the Lord, doesn't he?

  166. Now look at how Eve responds.

  167. Which by the way, first of all,

  168. that's mistake number one.

  169. Because she shouldn't have responded at all.

  170. Okay, word of wisdom to you.

  171. If a talking serpent comes up and starts speaking to you,

  172. you don't have to have a dialogue with it.

  173. You just run away and pray.

  174. And that's what Eve should have done here.

  175. That's what we should do when we face temptation.

  176. You know, you don't have to engage it.

  177. You don't have to have a dialogue with it.

  178. You don't have to enter into a conversation.

  179. With it, you are well within your rights

  180. to simply say no and run away.

  181. But Eve speaks.

  182. And to her credit, she does correct him, doesn't she?

  183. She says,

  184. We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,

  185. but now look what she says.

  186. God said,

  187. You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree

  188. that is in the midst of the garden,

  189. neither shall you touch it,

  190. lest you die.

  191. Stop there.

  192. Is that what God said?

  193. This is like one of those pictures in the magazine

  194. where you have side by side

  195. and you got to spot the differences here.

  196. It's subtle.

  197. Do you spot the differences?

  198. God never said,

  199. Don't touch the tree.

  200. She added that herself.

  201. She adds to the word of the Lord.

  202. And on top of that,

  203. this is a little bit harder to see in the English,

  204. but what she also does is

  205. she minimizes the consequence of disobedience.

  206. Hebrew language does this thing

  207. where when they want to emphasize something,

  208. they'll sometimes say it twice.

  209. And so when God gave this command,

  210. what it says is,

  211. In the day that you eat of it,

  212. you shall surely die.

  213. In the Hebrew, that is,

  214. you will die, die.

  215. That's serious.

  216. You're going to die, die.

  217. It's for emphasis.

  218. Don't eat it or you will surely die.

  219. But what does Eve say?

  220. Don't eat it.

  221. Don't touch it.

  222. Or you'll die.

  223. She adds to his word.

  224. She takes away from his word.

  225. She adds to it

  226. to make it sound more restrictive than it is.

  227. And then she minimizes the consequence

  228. and makes it sound less severe

  229. and less serious than it is.

  230. You see, this temptation is a battle

  231. over the word of the Lord.

  232. And she is losing.

  233. Church, if you want to guard yourself from sin,

  234. get yourself in the word of the Lord.

  235. If you expect to fight against the temptation of the enemy,

  236. you must know the word of the Lord.

  237. So that if somebody says,

  238. Did God really say this?

  239. You can look at him and say,

  240. Well, no, he didn't.

  241. And actually feel like you know what you're talking about

  242. because you know the word of the Lord.

  243. Or you could say,

  244. Well, yes, he did.

  245. And here's where he says it.

  246. And here's why he says it.

  247. And here's what it means.

  248. Because I'm so immersed in the word of the Lord

  249. that I can't be led astray by these subtle lies.

  250. If we would fight against temptation,

  251. we'd better be armed with the word of God.

  252. Not the word as we want it to be,

  253. but the word as it is.

  254. No additions,

  255. no subtractions.

  256. The enemy here questions the word of God.

  257. But he doesn't stop there, does he?

  258. Tactic number three.

  259. He outright lies to your face.

  260. Look at how Satan responds.

  261. Verse four.

  262. You will not surely die.

  263. You will not die.

  264. Die, he says.

  265. The serpent quotes the word of God.

  266. He knows it more accurately than Eve does.

  267. And he denies it completely.

  268. Surely, you will not surely die.

  269. That's an absolute lie.

  270. And of course, it doesn't seem like it at first.

  271. Adam and Eve, they don't immediately die, do they?

  272. No, not physically at least.

  273. But we know that this death,

  274. this consequence of the sin here

  275. is much more than just physical death.

  276. The apostle Paul says in Romans chapter five

  277. that sin came into the world through one man,

  278. that's Adam,

  279. and death through sin.

  280. So death spread to all men

  281. because all sinned.

  282. They will die physically eventually,

  283. and we die physically because of sin.

  284. Church, death is a terrible enemy.

  285. The more I see it,

  286. the closer I get to it,

  287. the more I experience it,

  288. the more I hate it.

  289. Death is a terrible enemy.

  290. The devil lies here.

  291. They will die.

  292. But an even bigger issue here

  293. is that sin brings spiritual death.

  294. Adam and Eve are about to be banished

  295. from the presence of God.

  296. And for the first time,

  297. that close, intimate communion with the Lord

  298. that they've enjoyed

  299. and God's perfect paradise

  300. is about to be broken.

  301. They may be alive, technically,

  302. but they are dead.

  303. You know, to be physically alive,

  304. but spiritually dead,

  305. that's not much of a life at all, is it?

  306. It's a mirage.

  307. It's a lie.

  308. To be physically alive,

  309. but spiritually dead,

  310. sadly, that's the natural state

  311. of every single person

  312. that's born of Adam.

  313. You realize,

  314. it is possible for you

  315. to be physically alive,

  316. breathing, thinking, acting,

  317. walking, sitting here,

  318. listening,

  319. sitting here,

  320. singing the songs,

  321. and hearing the word.

  322. It's possible for you

  323. to be physically alive,

  324. but spiritually dead.

  325. And this is our natural state

  326. because of sin,

  327. which is why Jesus says,

  328. you must be born again

  329. to enter the kingdom of God.

  330. The devil lies.

  331. You will not surely die.

  332. He tells him another lie in verse 5.

  333. God knows that when you eat of it,

  334. your eyes will be opened

  335. and you will be like God,

  336. knowing good and evil.

  337. Just zoom out

  338. and think about how ridiculous this is.

  339. Adam and Eve

  340. are made in the image of God,

  341. are they not?

  342. They are the only creatures

  343. in the world

  344. that are made in the image of God.

  345. No one else,

  346. no creature in all of creation

  347. is more like God than them.

  348. They don't need to take cues

  349. from a talking snake

  350. on how to be made like God.

  351. It's a lie.

  352. Church, we should know

  353. that the devil was a liar

  354. from the beginning.

  355. And everywhere he exerts his influence,

  356. he does it through lies.

  357. And you see what he does here.

  358. He oversells the benefits

  359. and he undersells

  360. the consequence of sin.

  361. You see that?

  362. You'll be like God.

  363. You'll be wise.

  364. Think about how it'll benefit you.

  365. And don't worry about the consequence.

  366. You won't die.

  367. He oversells the benefits

  368. and he undersells the consequence.

  369. And church,

  370. isn't that always how it is

  371. when we face temptation?

  372. You think about whatever that is for you.

  373. Whatever you tend to be led astray by,

  374. be that pride,

  375. or lust,

  376. greed,

  377. or anger,

  378. or selfishness,

  379. sins of the tongue

  380. and of speech

  381. like we spoke about this morning

  382. in Sunday school.

  383. In that moment of temptation,

  384. you're not talking,

  385. you're not thinking about consequence.

  386. You're thinking about benefit.

  387. How can this serve me?

  388. Take a step back

  389. and you realize

  390. it's always a lie.

  391. Sins,

  392. pleasures,

  393. are never worth it.

  394. The enemy baits the hook.

  395. He doesn't want you to see the hook.

  396. He covers it up

  397. with this delicious,

  398. appealing bait.

  399. Whatever it is

  400. that appeals to us,

  401. which is what we see

  402. in this fourth tactic here.

  403. Number four,

  404. the enemy plays

  405. to our desires.

  406. This is how temptation works.

  407. Look at verse six.

  408. When the woman saw

  409. that the tree was good for food

  410. and that it was a delight

  411. to the eyes

  412. and that the tree

  413. was to be desired

  414. to make one wise,

  415. she took of its fruit

  416. and ate.

  417. And she also gave some

  418. to her husband

  419. who was with her

  420. and he ate.

  421. First of all,

  422. can we talk about Adam

  423. here for a minute?

  424. Where was Adam

  425. the whole time

  426. this was going on?

  427. Where was Adam

  428. the leader?

  429. Where was Adam

  430. the head?

  431. Where was Adam

  432. the husband?

  433. Where was the guardian there?

  434. The man in the garden?

  435. He's supposed to be

  436. the godly authority,

  437. the protector.

  438. Where was Adam

  439. this whole time?

  440. He was right there

  441. with her.

  442. He just stands by

  443. and lets it all happen.

  444. Passive Adam

  445. stands by

  446. and watches

  447. as this snake

  448. lies about God

  449. and then tricks his wife.

  450. But both of them here

  451. make this fatal mistake.

  452. This is what they do.

  453. Listen to this.

  454. They make this fatal mistake

  455. of trusting their desires.

  456. others.

  457. You know we live

  458. in a culture

  459. that will tell you

  460. things like

  461. follow your heart.

  462. Right?

  463. If it feels good,

  464. it's okay.

  465. If I want to do something

  466. or like something

  467. or be something,

  468. if it's what I desire,

  469. nobody can say no to me

  470. or it's not affirming to me.

  471. It's not loving to me

  472. to deny me

  473. of my desire.

  474. Listen,

  475. our desires

  476. cannot always be trusted.

  477. Our feelings

  478. cannot always be trusted.

  479. Our emotions,

  480. how we feel about something

  481. cannot always be trusted.

  482. Feelings

  483. and desires

  484. and emotions

  485. are wonderful things

  486. when they follow

  487. the truth.

  488. Only

  489. when they follow

  490. the truth.

  491. Otherwise,

  492. don't trust them.

  493. James tells us

  494. each person

  495. is tempted

  496. when he is

  497. lured

  498. and enticed

  499. by his own desire.

  500. Then desire,

  501. when it has conceived,

  502. gives birth to sin

  503. and sin,

  504. when it is fully grown,

  505. brings forth

  506. death.

  507. Here we see

  508. Eve is

  509. tempted

  510. by the lust

  511. of the flesh.

  512. She sees

  513. that it's good

  514. for food.

  515. She's tempted

  516. by the lust

  517. of the eyes.

  518. It looks

  519. good.

  520. And she's tempted

  521. by the lust

  522. of pride.

  523. It's desired

  524. to make me wise,

  525. make me like God.

  526. And all of it

  527. is too much.

  528. So we see

  529. that she saw

  530. it was good

  531. to be desired.

  532. She took it,

  533. she ate it,

  534. and her husband

  535. who was with her

  536. who should have

  537. stopped the whole thing

  538. took

  539. and he ate.

  540. And now,

  541. second,

  542. we see the tragic

  543. effects

  544. of sin.

  545. Look there with me

  546. starting in verse 7.

  547. We see these

  548. effects of sin.

  549. We'll see this

  550. throughout the rest

  551. of the chapter.

  552. I had to stop

  553. somewhere.

  554. We're going to stop

  555. at verse 13.

  556. Well, for one,

  557. they felt shame.

  558. Verse 7,

  559. Then the eyes

  560. of both

  561. were opened

  562. and they knew

  563. that they were naked.

  564. And they sewed

  565. fig leaves together

  566. and made themselves

  567. loincloths.

  568. for the first time,

  569. mankind,

  570. they felt this

  571. awareness

  572. and the shame

  573. of their nakedness.

  574. You know,

  575. we have all felt

  576. this with our sin.

  577. Have we not?

  578. Even non-believers,

  579. you know deep down

  580. that your rebellion

  581. against the Lord

  582. is wrong.

  583. And when the temporary

  584. pleasure of that sin

  585. washes away

  586. and passes away,

  587. often what we're left

  588. with at the end

  589. is shame.

  590. And notice what

  591. they do with it.

  592. Look how they try

  593. to handle it.

  594. They go and they try

  595. and cover themselves up.

  596. They grab whatever

  597. they can find.

  598. They sew fig leaves

  599. together.

  600. They make themselves

  601. loincloths.

  602. They try by their own

  603. efforts to cover up

  604. their shame.

  605. Every single one of us

  606. does this,

  607. don't we?

  608. We feel shame.

  609. We sin and we feel

  610. that shame.

  611. And instead of running

  612. to the Lord

  613. as we ought,

  614. we try some man-made

  615. method of covering

  616. it up.

  617. Sometimes this is just

  618. how sin works.

  619. Sometimes the very thing

  620. that brings us shame

  621. is the same thing

  622. that we turn to

  623. to try and cover it up

  624. and make us feel better.

  625. It's this tragic,

  626. endless cycle.

  627. We self-medicate

  628. with drugs

  629. or with alcohol

  630. or with pornography.

  631. It's this endless

  632. depressing cycle.

  633. Or on the other end

  634. of the spectrum,

  635. maybe we try and cover

  636. ourselves up

  637. with good things,

  638. things that we think

  639. will please God

  640. with religion

  641. or good works.

  642. Maybe if I just try harder.

  643. Maybe if I just do more.

  644. Maybe if I'm just

  645. a little bit better

  646. next time.

  647. Listen,

  648. that's not the answer either.

  649. All of these

  650. are feeble attempts

  651. to cover up

  652. our fundamental problem,

  653. which is this.

  654. We are all sinners.

  655. We are naked

  656. and exposed

  657. and guilty

  658. in the sight of God

  659. and the answer for us

  660. isn't just to try

  661. and do something

  662. to cover it up

  663. as much as we want to.

  664. We can't do anything

  665. to cover up our shame.

  666. The answer

  667. is come to Christ.

  668. Only Jesus

  669. can cover our shame.

  670. He bore our shame.

  671. They experience shame

  672. in the garden.

  673. We also see that

  674. because of their sin

  675. for the first time

  676. they experience

  677. separation

  678. from the Lord.

  679. Verse 8

  680. They heard the sound

  681. of the Lord

  682. walking in the garden

  683. in the cool of the day

  684. and the man and his wife

  685. hid themselves

  686. from the presence

  687. of the Lord God

  688. among the trees

  689. of the garden.

  690. For the first time

  691. there is now

  692. distance

  693. separation

  694. between them

  695. and God.

  696. For the first time

  697. they are afraid

  698. of the Lord

  699. and they try

  700. and hide themselves

  701. away from them

  702. and what a foolish

  703. thing that is.

  704. Can you imagine?

  705. The Lord God

  706. who owns all

  707. and sees all

  708. and knows all

  709. you cannot hide

  710. yourself from God

  711. but what a tragedy

  712. it is that they even

  713. thought of this

  714. for the very first time

  715. sin has entered in

  716. and severed

  717. the relationship

  718. between man and God

  719. and they are afraid.

  720. I know this has never

  721. happened to you

  722. but it's kind of like

  723. when you're driving

  724. down Highway 17

  725. going about 25-30 miles

  726. an hour

  727. too fast

  728. and you hear a siren

  729. behind you

  730. and what do you do?

  731. Well you

  732. you just kind of

  733. inch over

  734. to the right hand lane

  735. and hope maybe

  736. just maybe

  737. they'll just pass

  738. right by you

  739. and show you

  740. some mercy

  741. maybe they won't

  742. see you

  743. maybe they're not

  744. they're not coming

  745. for you

  746. you hide

  747. but you know

  748. in your heart

  749. that they have

  750. every right

  751. to pull you over

  752. and write you a ticket

  753. you know that you're guilty

  754. you just hope

  755. that he passes you by

  756. you know there's an echo

  757. of this account

  758. here in Genesis

  759. with Adam and Eve

  760. hiding amongst the

  761. trees of the garden

  762. hiding because of

  763. their sin

  764. there's an echo

  765. of this all the way

  766. at the end of the book

  767. in Revelation

  768. the return of the Lord

  769. the day of the Lord

  770. the wicked hide themselves

  771. in rocks

  772. and in caves

  773. and they beg

  774. that the rocks

  775. might cover them up

  776. that they might be hidden

  777. from the wrath

  778. of the Lord

  779. but for them

  780. it's too late

  781. here God

  782. we see he doesn't

  783. pass them by

  784. and God certainly

  785. could have come

  786. in wrath

  787. right away

  788. that very minute

  789. but instead

  790. look how he

  791. look how he approaches them

  792. he comes

  793. gently

  794. and graciously

  795. asking these

  796. these probing

  797. rhetorical questions

  798. he's like a parent

  799. with a disobedient

  800. child

  801. son what were you

  802. thinking

  803. son why did you

  804. do this

  805. where

  806. where are you

  807. who told you

  808. not to eat

  809. of the tree

  810. who told you

  811. who told you

  812. that you were naked

  813. have you eaten

  814. of the tree

  815. which I commanded

  816. you not to eat

  817. and we know

  818. that the day

  819. of God's wrath

  820. is coming

  821. but here

  822. we see

  823. this is

  824. this is the Lord

  825. graciously

  826. pursuing

  827. sinners

  828. but even so

  829. the effect

  830. of their sin

  831. is obvious

  832. their sin

  833. has brought

  834. separation

  835. between them

  836. and God

  837. and so it is

  838. with each

  839. and every

  840. one

  841. of us

  842. our sin

  843. has earned

  844. us

  845. separation

  846. from God

  847. and we

  848. cannot hide

  849. ourselves

  850. from him

  851. Hebrews chapter 4

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  852. says no creature

  853. is hidden

  854. from his sight

  855. but all

  856. are naked

  857. and exposed

  858. to the eyes

  859. of him

  860. to whom

  861. we must

  862. give

  863. an account

  864. but instead

  865. of coming

  866. to him

  867. and owning

  868. their sin

  869. and repenting

  870. to him

  871. look what they do

  872. here in verse 12

  873. we see another

  874. effect here

  875. of their sin

  876. look what they do

  877. they blame

  878. shift

  879. they shift

  880. the blame

  881. onto anybody

  882. and everybody

  883. else besides

  884. themselves

  885. look how quickly

  886. Adam goes

  887. from rejoicing

  888. over his bride

  889. here in chapter 2

  890. to throwing her

  891. right under the bus

  892. here in chapter 3

  893. this woman

  894. not just this woman

  895. but this woman

  896. that you

  897. gave me

  898. she gave me

  899. the fruit

  900. and I ate

  901. y'all the honeymoon

  902. is over

  903. he blames

  904. his wife

  905. and essentially

  906. he blames

  907. God

  908. this defective

  909. helper

  910. that you

  911. gave me

  912. that's the

  913. problem

  914. it's her fault

  915. the Lord

  916. turns his

  917. attention

  918. to the woman

  919. and he says

  920. what is this

  921. that you

  922. have done

  923. what does

  924. she do

  925. well she

  926. turns and

  927. points the

  928. finger at the

  929. serpent

  930. the serpent

  931. deceived me

  932. and I ate

  933. Adam points

  934. his finger

  935. at his wife

  936. he says

  937. it's her fault

  938. he points

  939. his finger

  940. at God

  941. he says

  942. it's your fault

  943. she points

  944. the finger

  945. at the serpent

  946. says it's his fault

  947. no one

  948. here is owning

  949. their sin

  950. before the Lord

  951. no one

  952. confesses

  953. no one

  954. repents

  955. no one

  956. takes full

  957. responsibility

  958. for their

  959. own sin

  960. I wonder

  961. when was

  962. the last

  963. time that

  964. you

  965. simply

  966. fully

  967. completely

  968. owned

  969. your

  970. sinfulness

  971. before the

  972. Lord

  973. you didn't

  974. blame

  975. shift

  976. point the

  977. finger

  978. at someone

  979. else

  980. you didn't

  981. say I'm

  982. sorry

  983. but

  984. you didn't

  985. give any

  986. excuse

  987. any extra

  988. explanation

  989. you simply

  990. before the

  991. Lord

  992. said I

  993. am a

  994. sinner

  995. you see

  996. my sin

  997. I know

  998. my guilt

  999. and I

  1000. bring it

  1001. before you

  1002. would you

  1003. have mercy

  1004. on me

  1005. a sinner

  1006. let me

  1007. ask it like

  1008. this

  1009. when's the

  1010. last time

  1011. you really

  1012. practiced

  1013. repentance

  1014. and faith

  1015. those are

  1016. two pretty

  1017. key terms

  1018. that we

  1019. need to

  1020. understand

  1021. church

  1022. repentance

  1023. and faith

  1024. because this

  1025. is what it

  1026. means to

  1027. be a

  1028. Christian

  1029. to be

  1030. a Christian

  1031. you must

  1032. repent

  1033. of your

  1034. sin

  1035. and put

  1036. your faith

  1037. in Christ

  1038. Jesus

  1039. if you

  1040. have not

  1041. done this

  1042. you are

  1043. not a

  1044. Christian

  1045. and if you

  1046. are a

  1047. Christian

  1048. then you

  1049. start to

  1050. realize

  1051. this

  1052. this is a

  1053. whole

  1054. lifetime

  1055. worth of

  1056. faith

  1057. and repentance

  1058. I need

  1059. to repent

  1060. every day

  1061. I need

  1062. to remind

  1063. myself

  1064. to trust

  1065. in the

  1066. Lord

  1067. every

  1068. single

  1069. day

  1070. but it

  1071. happens

  1072. it starts

  1073. now

  1074. it starts

  1075. once

  1076. have you

  1077. have you

  1078. repented

  1079. and believed

  1080. the gospel

  1081. repentance

  1082. begins

  1083. with

  1084. fully

  1085. owning

  1086. your

  1087. sin

  1088. confess

  1089. it

  1090. own

  1091. it

  1092. I am

  1093. a sinner

  1094. I blew

  1095. it

  1096. I'm totally

  1097. powerless

  1098. to defeat

  1099. it

  1100. I can't

  1101. cover

  1102. myself

  1103. up

  1104. I can't

  1105. hide

  1106. it

  1107. from

  1108. you

  1109. you see

  1110. me

  1111. for exactly

  1112. who I

  1113. am

  1114. and so

  1115. what can

  1116. I do

  1117. but lay

  1118. myself

  1119. out

  1120. before

  1121. you

  1122. and ask

  1123. you

  1124. to

  1125. completely

  1126. just have

  1127. mercy

  1128. on a

  1129. sinner

  1130. like

  1131. me

  1132. that's

  1133. repentance

  1134. and then

  1135. faith

  1136. is

  1137. completely

  1138. trusting

  1139. Jesus

  1140. Christ

  1141. in

  1142. your

  1143. place

  1144. say I

  1145. failed

  1146. I'm a

  1147. sinner

  1148. I

  1149. cannot

  1150. come back

  1151. into the

  1152. presence of

  1153. God

  1154. on my

  1155. own

  1156. account

  1157. and so

  1158. I

  1159. trust

  1160. what

  1161. Jesus

  1162. has

  1163. done

  1164. is

  1165. sufficient

  1166. that's

  1167. faith

  1168. I

  1169. trust

  1170. what

  1171. Jesus

  1172. has

  1173. done

  1174. he

  1175. has

  1176. done

  1177. it

  1178. for

  1179. me

  1180. I

  1181. trust

  1182. that

  1183. Jesus

  1184. is

  1185. the

  1186. true

  1187. and

  1188. better

  1189. Adam

  1190. and I

  1191. want

  1192. to be

  1193. counted

  1194. in

  1195. him

  1196. have

  1197. you

  1198. trusted

  1199. in

  1200. Jesus

  1201. are

  1202. you

  1203. trusting

  1204. him

  1205. right

  1206. now

  1207. we

  1208. just

  1209. sang

  1210. the

  1211. words

  1212. to

  1213. this

  1214. new

  1215. song

  1216. new

  1217. to

  1218. us

  1219. anyway

  1220. let

  1221. me

  1222. let

  1223. me

  1224. remind

  1225. you

  1226. of

  1227. what

  1228. we

  1229. just

  1230. sang

  1231. Christ

  1232. the

  1233. true

  1234. and

  1235. better

  1236. Adam

  1237. son

  1238. of

  1239. God

  1240. and

  1241. son

  1242. of

  1243. man

  1244. who

  1266. dying

  1267. he

  1268. reversed

  1269. the

  1271. and

  1272. rising

  1273. crushed

  1274. the

  1277. Christians

  1278. are those

  1279. who

  1281. by

  1282. faith

  1283. that

  1284. Christ

  1285. Jesus

  1286. is

  1287. the

  1291. Adam

  1292. who

  1293. succeeded

  1294. in

  1297. where

  1298. the

  1299. first

  1300. Adam

  1310. read

  1311. earlier

  1312. this

  1314. from

  1315. Matthew

  1316. chapter

  1317. four

  1318. did

  1319. you

  1320. make

  1321. the

  1322. connection

  1323. where

  1324. the

  1325. devil

  1326. comes

  1327. and

  1328. he

  1329. takes

  1330. Jesus

  1331. up

  1332. to

  1333. the

  1334. mountaintop

  1335. you

  1336. remember

  1337. how

  1338. Jesus

  1339. has

  1340. been

  1341. fasting

  1342. in

  1343. the

  1344. wilderness

  1345. for

  1346. 40

  1347. days

  1348. at

  1349. this

  1350. point

  1351. he

  1352. is

  1353. worn

  1354. out

  1355. he

  1356. not

  1357. well

  1358. fed

  1359. he

  1360. is

  1361. not

  1362. in

  1363. a

  1364. paradise

  1365. like

  1366. Adam

  1367. was

  1368. he

  1369. is

  1370. out

  1371. in

  1372. the

  1373. desert

  1374. about

  1375. as

  1376. tired

  1377. and

  1378. hungry

  1379. as

  1380. a

  1381. person

  1382. can

  1383. be

  1384. and

  1385. right

  1386. in

  1387. the

  1388. midst

  1389. of

  1390. his

  1391. vulnerability

  1392. here

  1393. comes

  1394. that

  1395. snake

  1396. again

  1397. the

  1398. devil

  1399. we're

  1400. meant

  1401. to

  1402. read

  1403. this

  1404. story

  1405. right

  1406. alongside

  1407. the

  1408. story

  1409. here

  1410. in

  1411. Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1412. chapter

  1413. 3

  1414. the

  1415. devil

  1416. comes

  1417. and he

  1418. tempts

  1419. Jesus

  1420. with the

  1421. same

  1422. old

  1423. tired

  1424. playbook

  1425. the

  1426. exact

  1427. same

  1428. way

  1429. he

  1430. tempted

  1431. Adam

  1432. and

  1433. Eve

  1434. in

  1435. the

  1436. same

  1437. way

  1438. that

  1439. he

  1440. tempts

  1441. us

  1442. the

  1443. tempter

  1444. came

  1445. to

  1446. him

  1447. and

  1448. said

  1449. if

  1450. you

  1451. are

  1452. the

  1453. son

  1454. of

  1455. God

  1456. command

  1457. these

  1458. stones

  1459. to

  1460. become

  1461. loaves

  1462. of

  1463. bread

  1464. take

  1465. and

  1466. eat

  1467. he's

  1468. tempted

  1469. with a

  1470. lust

  1471. of

  1472. the

  1473. flesh

  1474. but

  1475. he

  1476. answered

  1477. it

  1478. is

  1479. written

  1480. man

  1481. shall

  1482. not

  1483. live

  1484. by

  1485. bread

  1486. alone

  1487. but

  1488. by

  1489. every

  1490. word

  1491. that

  1492. comes

  1493. from

  1494. the

  1495. mouth

  1496. of

  1497. God

  1498. how

  1499. does

  1500. Jesus

  1501. battle

  1502. the

  1503. enemy

  1504. is

  1505. with

  1506. the

  1507. word

  1508. of

  1509. the

  1510. Lord

  1511. the

  1512. devil

  1513. comes

  1514. and he

  1515. tries

  1516. another

  1517. tactic

  1518. he

  1519. tries

  1520. the

  1521. lust

  1522. of

  1523. pride

  1524. he

  1525. took

  1526. him

  1527. to

  1528. the

  1529. holy

  1530. city

  1531. and

  1532. set

  1533. him

  1534. on

  1535. the

  1536. pinnacle

  1537. of

  1538. the

  1539. temple

  1540. and

  1541. said

  1542. to

  1543. him

  1544. if

  1545. you

  1546. are

  1547. the

  1548. son

  1549. of

  1550. God

  1551. throw

  1552. yourself

  1553. down

  1554. for

  1555. it

  1556. is

  1557. written

  1558. he

  1559. will

  1560. command

  1561. his

  1562. angels

  1563. concerning

  1564. you

  1565. and

  1566. on

  1567. their

  1568. hands

  1569. they

  1570. will

  1571. bear

  1572. you

  1573. up

  1574. lest

  1575. you

  1576. strike

  1577. your

  1578. foot

  1579. against

  1580. a

  1581. stone

  1582. and

  1583. now

  1584. the

  1585. devil

  1586. is

  1587. quoting

  1588. scripture

  1589. last

  1590. tactic

  1591. the

  1592. devil

  1593. took

  1594. him

  1595. up

  1596. to

  1597. the

  1598. very

  1599. high

  1600. mountain

  1601. and

  1602. showed

  1603. him

  1604. all

  1605. the

  1606. kingdoms

  1607. of

  1608. the

  1609. world

  1610. and

  1611. their

  1612. glory

  1613. that's

  1614. the

  1615. lust

  1616. of

  1617. sight

  1618. and

  1619. he

  1620. said

  1621. to

  1622. him

  1623. all

  1624. these

  1625. I

  1626. will

  1627. give

  1628. you

  1629. if

  1630. you

  1631. will

  1632. fall

  1633. down

  1634. and

  1635. worship

  1636. me

  1637. Jesus

  1638. said

  1639. to

  1640. him

  1641. be

  1642. gone

  1643. Satan

  1644. for

  1645. it

  1646. is

  1648. you

  1649. shall

  1650. worship

  1651. the

  1652. Lord

  1653. your

  1654. God

  1655. and

  1656. him

  1657. !

  1679. Jesus

  1680. perfectly

  1681. obeys

  1682. the

  2014. see

  2015. it

  2022. as

  2023. life
