  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to the book of Genesis.

  2. We're in Genesis chapter 3 this morning, and if it's your first time joining us,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  3. or your first time joining us in a while, we've been walking through the book of Genesis.

  4. We've taken sort of a slow walk through the garden,

  5. and now we're concluding Genesis chapter 3 this morning.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  6. And this passage explains a lot about the brokenness in our world.

  7. But even so, I hope you'll notice here that throughout this passage, with all of its judgment,

  8. there are brilliant glimmers of hope and gospel promise here in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  9. So our passage this morning is Genesis 3, verses 14 through the end of the chapter, verse 24.

    Genesis 3:14

  10. And when you found it there in God's Word, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word.

  11. Genesis 3, verses 14 through the end of the chapter,

    Genesis 3:14

  12. To the woman, he said,

  13. And to Adam, he said,

  14. Because you have listened to the voice of your wife,

  15. and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you,

  16. you shall not eat of it.

  17. Cursed is the ground because of you.

  18. In pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life.

  19. Thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,

  20. and you shall eat the plants of the field.

  21. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread,

  22. till you return to the ground.

  23. For out of it you were taken,

  24. for you are dust,

  25. and to dust you shall return.

  26. The man called his wife's name Eve,

  27. because she was the mother of all living.

  28. And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife

  29. garments of skins and clothed them.

  30. Then the Lord God said,

  31. Behold,

  32. The man has become like one of us,

  33. and knowing good and evil.

  34. Now,

  35. lest he reach out his hand,

  36. and take also of the tree of life,

  37. and eat,

  38. and live forever.

  39. Therefore the Lord God sent him out

  40. from the garden of Eden,

  41. to work the ground from which he was taken.

  42. He drove out the man,

  43. and at the east of the garden of Eden,

  44. he placed the cherubim

  45. and a flaming sword

  46. that turned every way

  47. to guard the way

  48. to the tree of life.

  49. Lord,

  50. we pray once more,

  51. now again,

  52. as we open up this passage.

  53. God,

  54. would you,

  55. would you speak today

  56. through the preaching of your word?

  57. Would you convict us of sin

  58. where there needs to be conviction?

  59. And would you draw each of us

  60. to further faith in Christ?

  61. We ask in Jesus' name.

  62. Amen.

  63. You may be seated.

  64. Sometimes in a house with three boys,

  65. and I'm not picking on them,

  66. this is probably true of every family,

  67. it's not unique to them,

  68. I want to be clear,

  69. I'm not trying to pick on them,

  70. but sometimes in a house with three boys,

  71. every now and then,

  72. something goes wrong.

  73. Somebody gets hurt,

  74. something gets broken,

  75. somebody takes something

  76. that they shouldn't,

  77. whatever the issue may be,

  78. sin shows up,

  79. and the parent steps in

  80. and ultimately says,

  81. what are you doing?

  82. What's going on here?

  83. And all at once,

  84. all at the same time,

  85. everybody starts explaining

  86. what happened,

  87. and each person usually explaining

  88. what the other person did wrong,

  89. and everybody's talking at once,

  90. and there's this moment of confusion

  91. and blame shifting

  92. until eventually,

  93. finally,

  94. mom or dad says,

  95. I've heard enough,

  96. and the judgments

  97. start to come down.

  98. You go to your room,

  99. you drop the toys,

  100. you're not playing with those anymore,

  101. you drop and give me 50 push-ups right now.

  102. The judgments start to rain down.

  103. This morning,

  104. we're picking up here

  105. in the middle of a chapter,

  106. and if you remember from last week,

  107. we left Adam and Eve

  108. pointing their fingers at each other,

  109. and at the serpent,

  110. and even ultimately at God.

  111. It's a very tense moment

  112. here in the Garden of Eden.

  113. They have sinned,

  114. they are guilty,

  115. they know that they're guilty,

  116. they're blame shifting,

  117. explaining what everybody else did wrong

  118. besides themselves,

  119. and now,

  120. in our passage this morning,

  121. God finally says,

  122. I have heard enough,

  123. and the judgments

  124. start to come down.

  125. This passage this morning

  126. teaches us a very clear,

  127. but a very unpopular truth,

  128. and it's this.

  129. Our sin earns God's judgment.

  130. Our sin has earned God's judgment,

  131. and yet at the very same time,

  132. as we read through this passage,

  133. hopefully what we'll see is that

  134. this passage,

  135. at the very same time,

  136. gives us incredible hope.

  137. Even in the midst of God

  138. pronouncing judgment for sin,

  139. there is the promise

  140. and the hope of the gospel,

  141. all the way back here

  142. in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  143. So let's look here

  144. at our passage this morning,

  145. and what we'll see

  146. is five responses of God to sin.

  147. Five responses here of God to sin.

  148. First, here in verses 14 through 15,

  149. response number one

  150. is that God judges the serpent.

  151. God judges the serpent.

  152. Look there to verse 14 with me.

  153. The Lord God said to the serpent,

  154. because you have done this,

  155. cursed are you above all livestock

  156. and above all beasts of the field.

  157. On your belly you shall go,

  158. and dust you shall eat

  159. all the days of your life.

  160. I will put enmity between you and the woman,

  161. between your offspring and her offspring.

  162. He shall bruise your head,

  163. and you shall bruise his heel.

  164. Now we're gonna put our finger there

  165. in the second half of that verse,

  166. and we're gonna circle back to that at the end,

  167. because that second half of that verse

  168. is the gospel.

  169. And that is the gospel promise,

  170. and we're gonna come back to that towards the end.

  171. One of the most significant verses

  172. in the entire Bible.

  173. But here for now,

  174. let's just notice how God curses the serpent.

  175. For one, he sentences him

  176. to go on the ground, on his belly.

  177. Dust you shall eat.

  178. Go eat dust, he says to the snake.

  179. Now I have no idea what the serpent looked like

  180. before this curse, right?

  181. There's speculation.

  182. Some say maybe he had legs of some sort.

  183. Maybe he stood up on his tail.

  184. I have no idea.

  185. That's not really the point here, is it?

  186. The point is God's judgment on the snake.

  187. And you notice he didn't engage with him like Eve did.

  188. There's no conversation.

  189. There's no back and forth.

  190. The serpent doesn't even speak back to the Lord.

  191. Once he speaks, it's quiet.

  192. And God slams down the gavel.

  193. And he says, because you have done this,

  194. because you have led humanity

  195. into this rebellion against the Lord,

  196. you are now sentenced to go on your belly

  197. and eat the dust.

  198. You will be this lowly, slimy,

  199. despised creature, this ugly thing.

  200. Not only this, we see that

  201. there is now a natural dislike

  202. between the serpent and the woman.

  203. The snake won't like her

  204. and she won't like the snake.

  205. Ladies, can I get an amen?

  206. Right?

  207. I know we live in the country

  208. and some of y'all actually like snakes, right?

  209. But you should know that's not natural.

  210. That's not normal.

  211. God has put enmity,

  212. dislike,

  213. division,

  214. war,

  215. tension,

  216. hatred

  217. between the woman

  218. and the snake.

  219. My wife is a very natural example of this.

  220. Okay?

  221. If we even see a snake in the yard,

  222. I got to personally escort her to the car

  223. for like the next two or three weeks.

  224. That's just how it goes.

  225. There's enmity there.

  226. There's beef.

  227. There's conflict.

  228. But of course we know

  229. it goes deeper than this, right?

  230. Because the Lord,

  231. he's not just speaking directly

  232. to the snake, is he?

  233. He's ultimately here

  234. speaking a curse

  235. on Satan himself.

  236. Satan himself here

  237. is judged in the garden.

  238. God says that Satan himself

  239. will be a low-down,

  240. ugly,

  241. despised,

  242. cursed thing.

  243. And there will be enmity,

  244. conflict,

  245. war,

  246. hatred

  247. between the offspring of Satan

  248. and the offspring of the woman.

  249. Of course we should

  250. already be clued in here

  251. that this isn't

  252. physical offspring.

  253. Satan has no physical offspring.

  254. He's a fallen angel.

  255. He can't bear physical children.

  256. But he absolutely has

  257. spiritual offspring.

  258. In fact,

  259. as we look forward

  260. to the Gospel of John,

  261. Jesus tells us

  262. that some of the Pharisees,

  263. he tells them directly

  264. in the Gospel of John,

  265. the reason that they don't receive

  266. his word

  267. is that they are

  268. offspring of their father,

  269. the devil.

  270. Now how's that for an insult?

  271. Right?

  272. The reason you don't receive

  273. my word,

  274. Jesus says,

  275. is because you are

  276. the offspring of that snake

  277. in the garden.

  278. Here we see

  279. this is a pronouncement

  280. of a spiritual conflict,

  281. a spiritual battle

  282. that we'll see

  283. throughout the rest

  284. of Scripture.

  285. A spiritual battle

  286. between the offspring of Satan

  287. and the offspring

  288. of the woman

  289. who we know ultimately

  290. is Christ Jesus

  291. and all who belong to him.

  292. So response number one,

  293. God judges the serpent.

  294. But then we see,

  295. second,

  296. response number two,

  297. God judges the woman.

  298. Here in verse 16.

  299. Look there to verse 16 with me.

  300. And her judgment

  301. is twofold here.

  302. On the one hand,

  303. childbearing will now

  304. be incredibly painful.

  305. Verse 16.

  306. To the woman,

  307. he said,

  308. I will surely multiply

  309. your pain

  310. and childbearing.

  311. In pain,

  312. you shall bring forth children.

  313. And again,

  314. every woman in the room

  315. who's ever birthed a child

  316. can say amen.

  317. Right?

  318. A childbirth is pain.

  319. I've seen this firsthand

  320. with three different children

  321. brought into the world.

  322. It looks hard.

  323. They call it labor

  324. for a reason.

  325. It is painful

  326. for the woman

  327. to bring forth children.

  328. Of course,

  329. there's advancements

  330. in medicine

  331. and every woman's

  332. experience is different.

  333. But as a general statement,

  334. now on this side

  335. of the fall,

  336. childbearing is painful.

  337. But we should know,

  338. again,

  339. this pain goes beyond

  340. just the physical act

  341. of birthing a child,

  342. doesn't it?

  343. Now,

  344. because of sin,

  345. there is pain

  346. and difficulty

  347. with the entire experience

  348. of bearing children.

  349. Now,

  350. don't misunderstand me.

  351. Children are an incredible blessing

  352. from the Lord.

  353. Amen?

  354. Now,

  355. they are an incredible blessing

  356. from the Lord.

  357. But now,

  358. because of sin,

  359. there are all sorts of reasons

  360. why this good thing

  361. is incredibly difficult

  362. and complicated

  363. and even painful.

  364. Now,

  365. on this side of the fall,

  366. because of sin,

  367. now there are issues

  368. of infertility.

  369. Couples who desperately desire

  370. to be fruitful

  371. and multiply

  372. but can't just seem

  373. to make that work.

  374. And now,

  375. because of sin,

  376. on this side of the fall,

  377. sometimes that desire

  378. to get married

  379. and have children

  380. for whatever reason

  381. is frustrated

  382. and a woman stays single

  383. far longer

  384. than she would ever want.

  385. And now,

  386. because of sin,

  387. on this side of the fall,

  388. sometimes children

  389. bring grief

  390. upon their parents.

  391. I mean,

  392. you talk about pain

  393. and childbearing.

  394. Now,

  395. because of sin,

  396. there's this experience

  397. of grieving,

  398. wayward children.

  399. Disobedient children

  400. bring grief

  401. upon their parents.

  402. All of this

  403. is because of sin

  404. in the world.

  405. Now,

  406. because of sin,

  407. there's brokenness

  408. in this area

  409. of childbearing.

  410. And I'd be willing

  411. to bet

  412. that every woman

  413. who's born a child

  414. has some experience

  415. and can relate to this.

  416. in some way.

  417. And one of Eve's

  418. primary tasks

  419. in the garden

  420. was to be,

  421. as Adam names her here,

  422. the mother of all living.

  423. Fill the earth

  424. and subdue it.

  425. Fill the earth

  426. with the image of God.

  427. Be fruitful

  428. and multiply.

  429. But now,

  430. that task

  431. is made so much harder

  432. by the presence

  433. of sin

  434. in the world.

  435. The pain,

  436. it doesn't just stop

  437. at childbearing,

  438. does it?

  439. There's a whole

  440. other aspect here.

  441. The second part

  442. of this judgment

  443. on the woman

  444. is that now,

  445. because of sin,

  446. her relationship

  447. with her spouse

  448. will be broken.

  449. Eve was made,

  450. remember,

  451. to be Adam's helper

  452. in the garden.

  453. But now,

  454. this is also

  455. made difficult

  456. by the presence

  457. of sin.

  458. God says here,

  459. your desire

  460. shall be

  461. for your husband

  462. and he shall

  463. rule over you.

  464. Now,

  465. at first glance,

  466. that sounds like

  467. it's not so bad,

  468. does it?

  469. Your desire

  470. shall be

  471. for your husband.

  472. We ought to

  473. want our spouse

  474. to desire us,

  475. right?

  476. Amen?

  477. You can say yes,

  478. that's okay.

  479. We ought to want that,

  480. but not like this.

  481. If you look

  482. just a few paragraphs

  483. later,

  484. it might be

  485. on the next page

  486. or just down

  487. a few paragraphs

  488. here in your Bible.

  489. Genesis 4,

    Genesis 4:7

  490. verse 7.

  491. Genesis 4,

    Genesis 4:7

  492. verse 7.

  493. We see this exact

  494. same combination

  495. of words here

  496. and it clues us

  497. in to what's meant

  498. back here in chapter 3.

  499. Here in Genesis 4,

  500. God is speaking

  501. to Cain.

  502. You remember this story?

  503. Right before Cain

  504. is about to commit

  505. the very first murder

  506. in human history.

  507. What does God say

  508. to Cain?

  509. It's the exact

  510. same language.

  511. Listen to this.

  512. Sin is crouching

  513. at the door.

  514. Its desire

  515. is for you,

  516. but you must

  517. rule over it.

  518. Of course,

  519. we know what

  520. happens next.

  521. But here's the thing.

  522. Sin doesn't

  523. desire you

  524. in a good way.

  525. Sin doesn't

  526. want you

  527. in a good way.

  528. It doesn't want

  529. to cuddle up

  530. with you

  531. and love you.

  532. Sin wants

  533. to overcome

  534. you.

  535. Sin wants

  536. to destroy

  537. you.

  538. And God

  539. is saying here,

  540. you must

  541. rule over it.

  542. Now,

  543. because of sin,

  544. on this side

  545. of the fall,

  546. the wife

  547. will desire

  548. to rule

  549. over her husband.

  550. Now,

  551. because of sin,

  552. a God-honoring

  553. marriage

  554. where the husband

  555. loves and leads

  556. well and the wife

  557. respects and submits

  558. well,

  559. that is hard

  560. to come by.

  561. And now,

  562. because of sin,

  563. the wife,

  564. she won't like

  565. those old-fashioned

  566. words like

  567. submission

  568. or helper.

  569. She'll want

  570. to overcome

  571. her husband

  572. and rule

  573. over him

  574. and that desire

  575. on this side

  576. of the fall

  577. will often

  578. be frustrated

  579. by an authoritarian

  580. husband who

  581. will rule

  582. over her.

  583. We should know

  584. again that

  585. all of this

  586. is a result

  587. of sin.

  588. And everywhere

  589. you see

  590. broken marriages

  591. and broken

  592. families,

  593. broken households,

  594. tensions

  595. and power

  596. struggles

  597. and arguments

  598. and fights,

  599. all of this

  600. can be traced

  601. back here

  602. to the garden.

  603. The result

  604. of sin

  605. in the world.

  606. But ladies,

  607. he's not just

  608. singling you out.

  609. And now,

  610. third,

  611. we see God's

  612. judgment

  613. on the man.

  614. Look there

  615. to verses 17

  616. through 19.

  617. Here we see

  618. God's judgment

  619. on the man.

  620. He says

  621. in verse 17,

  622. because you

  623. have listened

  624. to the voice

  625. of your wife.

  626. Now stop there

  627. just a minute.

  628. I mean,

  629. this is a test,

  630. okay?

  631. If you're sitting

  632. next to your wife,

  633. you better answer

  634. this very carefully,

  635. okay?

  636. I'm going to ask

  637. you a question.

  638. Should you listen

  639. to the voice

  640. of your wife?

  641. You can answer.

  642. Yeah?

  643. It's not a trick

  644. question.

  645. The answer is

  646. yes.

  647. Yes.

  648. Yes.

  649. Yes.

  650. You should listen

  651. to the voice

  652. of your wife.

  653. I'll be the first

  654. to tell you,

  655. man.

  656. I try.

  657. I try to listen

  658. to the voice

  659. of my wife,

  660. and she can tell you

  661. depending on the day,

  662. the week,

  663. how good of a job

  664. I'm doing.

  665. Husbands ought

  666. to listen

  667. to the voice

  668. of their wives.

  669. They have a good,

  670. different perspective,

  671. offer different gifting,

  672. different wisdom.

  673. It's a complimentary

  674. relationship.

  675. Men ought to listen

  676. to their wives.

  677. Pastors ought

  678. to listen

  679. to wise women

  680. in their congregation.

  681. Simply listening

  682. isn't the issue

  683. here,

  684. is it?

  685. The issue

  686. is that

  687. leader Adam,

  688. head Adam,

  689. leader Adam,

  690. listened to the voice

  691. of his wife

  692. as she led him

  693. into sin.

  694. That's the issue.

  695. The issue

  696. is that Adam

  697. allowed the voice

  698. of his wife

  699. to steer the ship,

  700. and she steered

  701. the whole thing

  702. right into an iceberg.

  703. This is God

  704. addressing passive Adam.

  705. Men,

  706. husbands,

  707. do not be passive Adam.

  708. Take up your call

  709. to love

  710. and to lead your wife,

  711. to love your wife

  712. as Christ loved the church,

  713. gave himself up for her.

  714. Because you have listened

  715. to the voice

  716. of your wife

  717. and have eaten

  718. of the tree

  719. of which I command you,

  720. you shall not eat of it.

  721. Cursed is the ground

  722. because of you.

  723. In pain

  724. you shall eat of it

  725. all the days

  726. of your life.

  727. Thorns and thistles

  728. it shall bring forth

  729. for you,

  730. and you shall eat

  731. the plants

  732. of the field.

  733. By the sweat

  734. of your face

  735. you shall eat bread

  736. till you return

  737. to the ground,

  738. for out of it

  739. you were taken,

  740. for you are dust,

  741. and to dust

  742. you shall return.

  743. Now,

  744. because of sin,

  745. Adam's task

  746. to rule over the world

  747. and to guard

  748. and to keep the garden,

  749. to rule

  750. and subdue the earth,

  751. now that task

  752. is made

  753. much more difficult.

  754. Now because of sin

  755. on this side

  756. of the fall,

  757. instead of only

  758. bearing fruit,

  759. now his work

  760. bears thorns

  761. and thistles.

  762. In other words,

  763. now because of sin

  764. on this side

  765. of the fall,

  766. work is really,

  767. really hard.

  768. Amen?

  769. Fellas,

  770. I know you understand

  771. what I'm saying.

  772. Work is hard.

  773. I hear some of y'all

  774. talk about your work.

  775. I get tired

  776. just listening to you

  777. talk about your work.

  778. You get up early,

  779. you grind yourself

  780. to the bone

  781. all day long,

  782. you come back home,

  783. you eat,

  784. you sleep,

  785. you go do it all

  786. again the next day.

  787. On this side

  788. of the fall,

  789. work is still good.

  790. Work is still good

  791. but it bears thorns

  792. and thistles.

  793. And these thorns

  794. can take a lot

  795. of different shapes,

  796. can't they?

  797. It can come in the form

  798. of a job

  799. you don't even like doing.

  800. Do you know

  801. you just have to do something

  802. to make ends meet

  803. so that you can eat

  804. the bread of the ground?

  805. It can come in the form

  806. of labor

  807. that just seems meaningless

  808. or unfulfilling.

  809. You don't even know

  810. why you're doing

  811. what you're doing.

  812. You just know

  813. you have to have a job.

  814. You have to do something

  815. with your life.

  816. And maybe

  817. you have a hard time

  818. seeing how your work

  819. fits in

  820. with the grand plan

  821. of God

  822. for you

  823. and the world

  824. and you don't see

  825. how your labor

  826. means anything

  827. ultimately

  828. with God

  829. and His glory.

  830. It could be

  831. your work environment,

  832. your boss,

  833. your co-workers

  834. can be thorns

  835. in your side.

  836. Amen?

  837. Right?

  838. We've all experienced

  839. this in our time

  840. at work.

  841. Whatever it may be

  842. now on this side

  843. of the fall,

  844. work is hard.

  845. This is the result

  846. of sin.

  847. And I'll tell you

  848. the worst job

  849. I ever had

  850. was for one summer,

  851. praise God,

  852. just one summer.

  853. I was a landscape architect

  854. in Daytona Beach,

  855. Florida

  856. at a golf course.

  857. And if you know

  858. anything about me,

  859. I do not do yard work.

  860. I'm not skilled

  861. in that way.

  862. It was blazing hot.

  863. There were gators

  864. on just about

  865. every single hole.

  866. The course itself

  867. was going bankrupt.

  868. So they didn't even

  869. have money

  870. to provide

  871. the right tools

  872. and really ultimately

  873. they just didn't

  874. even care.

  875. Every time I showed up,

  876. there's a new leak

  877. on a new hole

  878. that I had to go fix

  879. every single morning

  880. for a summer.

  881. I'd clock in

  882. and they would hand me

  883. a bucket,

  884. a shovel,

  885. and a clamp.

  886. And they'd tell me

  887. go fix the hole.

  888. Go fix the leak

  889. on hole 13,

  890. whatever it was.

  891. The clamp was for the leak

  892. once I found it.

  893. But the problem was

  894. wherever you see water

  895. coming up out of the ground

  896. isn't necessarily

  897. where the leak is.

  898. You know,

  899. water runs.

  900. The pipes were about

  901. five feet under the ground.

  902. That's what the shovel

  903. was for.

  904. And by the time I found

  905. where the water

  906. was coming from,

  907. they didn't even bother

  908. to turn off the water.

  909. That's what the bucket

  910. was for.

  911. Every day

  912. for an entire summer,

  913. I did meaningless,

  914. repetitive,

  915. frustrating,

  916. difficult work,

  917. and I felt it

  918. more than ever.

  919. Thorns and thistles.

  920. Thorns and thistles.

  921. By the sweat

  922. of your brow.

  923. Adam's work here

  924. is made incredibly

  925. difficult.

  926. But church,

  927. that's not even

  928. the worst part,

  929. is it?

  930. Look there

  931. with me

  932. verses 22-24.

  933. The worst effect

  934. of all

  935. falls on both of them.

  936. Here in verses 22-24

  937. and here we see

  938. forth

  939. God's judgment

  940. on all

  941. people.

  942. Then the Lord God

  943. said,

  944. Behold,

  945. the man has become

  946. like one of us

  947. in knowing good

  948. and evil.

  949. Now lest he

  950. reach out his hand

  951. and take also

  952. of the tree of life

  953. and eat

  954. and live forever.

  955. Therefore,

  956. the Lord God

  957. sent him out

  958. of the Garden of Eden

  959. to work the ground

  960. from which he was taken.

  961. He drove out the man

  962. and at the east

  963. of the Garden of Eden

  964. he placed the chair of him

  965. and the flaming sword

  966. that turned every way

  967. to guard the way

  968. to the tree of life.

  969. Now,

  970. because of sin,

  971. on this side

  972. of the fall,

  973. Adam and Eve

  974. and all mankind

  975. with them

  976. are now driven

  977. out of the Garden.

  978. They are now

  979. driven away

  980. from the presence

  981. of God.

  982. They are banished

  983. from the Garden of Eden

  984. with no way

  985. back in,

  986. no way back

  987. to purity,

  988. no way back

  989. to innocence,

  990. no way back

  991. to God.

  992. And this angel

  993. stands there

  994. with a flaming sword

  995. to make certain

  996. there is no way

  997. they could possibly

  998. come back

  999. even if they tried.

  1000. now that sin

  1001. has entered in,

  1002. childbearing

  1003. is difficult,

  1004. marriage is difficult,

  1005. work is difficult,

  1006. life is difficult,

1007. but we ought to recognize

  1008. the worst part

  1009. of all of it

  1010. is that now

  1011. on this side

  1012. of the fall,

  1013. our relationship

  1014. with God

  1015. is difficult.

  1016. Not just difficult,

  1017. but for sinners

  1018. our relationship

  1019. with God

  1020. is impossible

  1021. so long

  1022. as sin

  1023. remains.

  1024. You know,

  1025. we are often

  1026. so aware

  1027. of all of these

  1028. other effects

  1029. of sin,

  1030. aren't we?

  1031. We all live

  1032. on this side

  1033. of the garden,

  1034. we all live

  1035. on this side

  1036. of the fall,

  1037. outside of the

  1038. Garden of Eden,

  1039. we know the effects

1040. of sin in the world

  1041. firsthand.

  1042. It's no secret

  1043. that childbirth

  1044. is painful,

  1045. it's no secret

  1046. that work is hard,

  1047. that marriage

  1048. is often hard,

  1049. that we have

  1050. tensions and difficulties

  1051. and problems

  1052. in every sphere

  1053. of life,

  1054. we realize

  1055. that things

  1056. aren't quite right

  1057. and we complain

  1058. about it,

  1059. but this judgment

  1060. is the worst

  1061. of them all

  1062. and so many people

  1063. go through life

  1064. without giving it

  1065. a single thought.

  1066. We should realize

  1067. that the worst

  1068. possible effect

  1069. of sin

  1070. isn't our broken

  1071. relationship

  1072. with our spouse,

  1073. it isn't our

  1074. broken relationship

  1075. with our children,

  1076. it's not our

  1077. terrible jobs

  1078. or poor health,

  1079. it isn't even

  1080. death itself.

  1081. The worst effect

  1082. of sin

  1083. is that we

  1084. are by nature

  1085. banished from

  1086. the presence

  1087. of God

  1088. and under

  1089. His wrath.

  1090. We see it here

  1091. in the garden,

  1092. don't we?

  1093. Sinful people

  1094. cannot safely

  1095. dwell in the

  1096. presence of a

  1097. holy God.

  1098. We are separated

  1099. from God

  1100. because of

  1101. our sin.

  1102. I told you

  1103. this was an

  1104. unpopular truth.

  1105. This is

  1106. hard pill

  1107. to swallow,

  1108. isn't it?

  1109. Sinners

  1110. like me,

  1111. like you,

  1112. by nature

  1113. and by choice

  1114. are separated

  1115. from a holy God,

  1116. but we praise

  1117. God

  1118. that because

  1119. of His

  1120. great mercy

  1121. and grace

  1122. to sinners

  1123. like us,

  1124. it doesn't

  1125. have to be

  1126. that way.

  1127. Here,

  1128. even in this

  1129. passage filled

  1130. with judgment,

  1131. we get glimmers

  1132. of hope,

  1133. don't we?

  1134. We're going to

  1135. walk back through

  1136. and see these

  1137. glimmers of hope

  1138. that maybe

  1139. somehow,

  1140. someway,

  1141. God is going

  1142. to do something

  1143. to make all

  1144. of this right.

  1145. God is going

  1146. to step in

  1147. and do something

  1148. to fix what's

  1149. been broken.

  1150. God is going

  1151. to do something

  1152. to bring sinners

  1153. like us

  1154. back into

  1155. His presence

  1156. and this

  1157. was His

  1158. plan

  1159. all along.

  1160. So,

  1161. fifth,

  1162. let's look

  1163. back through

  1164. and see

  1165. God responds

  1166. to sin

  1167. with mercy

  1168. and with hope.

  1169. You know

  1170. what mercy

  1171. is.

  1172. Mercy

  1173. is God

  1174. withholding

  1175. what we

  1176. deserve

  1177. for our

  1178. sin.

  1179. That's what

  1180. mercy is.

  1181. He's holding

  1182. back what we

  1183. deserve in this

  1184. passage.

  1185. Again,

  1186. although it's

  1187. full of

  1188. judgment,

  1189. it is

  1190. absolutely

  1191. bursting

  1192. with mercy.

  1193. Where do I

  1194. see that?

  1195. Look back

  1196. at the text

  1197. with me.

  1198. For one

  1199. thing,

  1200. Adam and

  1201. Eve don't

  1202. drop dead

  1203. the minute

  1204. they sin,

  1205. do they?

  1206. The wages

  1207. of sin

  1208. is what?

  1209. It's death.

  1210. What did

  1211. God tell

  1212. them?

  1213. When you

  1214. eat of the

  1215. fruit of

  1216. the tree,

  1217. you will

  1218. surely die

  1219. and yet here

  1220. we see

  1221. they're

  1222. alive.

  1223. Sinners,

  1224. rebels with

  1225. breath in

  1226. their lungs,

  1227. sinners who

  1228. get to enjoy

  1229. so many of

  1230. the good

  1231. gifts of

  1232. God.

  1233. Even on

  1234. this side

  1235. of the

  1236. fall,

  1237. there's a

  1238. glimmer of

  1239. hope here.

  1240. Even in

  1241. the way

  1242. Adam names

  1243. his wife,

  1244. she's the

  1245. mother of

  1246. the living.

  1247. There's a

  1248. glimmer of

  1249. hope here

  1250. that even

  1251. though they're

  1252. banished from

  1253. the garden,

  1254. even though

  1255. they now

  1256. live in

  1257. the sin

  1258. cursed

  1259. world,

  1260. even though

  1261. they've

  1262. blown it

  1263. and they

  1264. know they

  1265. deserve

  1266. judgment,

  1267. yet God

  1268. is merciful

  1269. to sinners.

  1270. I see his

  1271. mercy there

  1272. in verse

  1273. 22.

  1274. The Lord

  1275. himself prevents

  1276. Adam and

  1277. Eve from

  1278. eating of

  1279. the tree

  1280. of life.

  1281. God himself

  1282. takes measures

  1283. to make

  1284. certain that

  1285. Adam and

  1286. Eve aren't

  1287. stuck in

  1288. this state

  1289. of sin for

  1290. the rest of

  1291. eternity.

  1292. There's a

  1293. possibility here,

  1294. even with

  1295. death looming in

  1296. the background,

  1297. maybe God

  1298. will make

  1299. another way.

  1300. All over this

  1301. passage, even in

  1302. judgment, God is

  1303. showing mercy

  1304. to sinners.

  1305. Yes, we

  1306. believe God

  1307. is just.

  1308. Yes, we

  1309. believe God

  1310. is full of

  1311. wrath against

  1312. sin, but we

  1313. also believe God

  1314. is merciful to

  1315. sinners.

  1316. He's slow to

  1317. anger, abounding

  1318. in steadfast love

  1319. and faithfulness.

  1320. He is patient

  1321. towards sinners,

  1322. not willing that

  1323. any should perish,

  1324. but that all

  1325. should reach

  1326. repentance.

  1327. If you are not

  1328. a believer, you

  1329. should recognize

  1330. that you are

  1331. absolutely swimming

  1332. in an ocean of

  1333. God's mercy, even

  1334. this very minute.

  1335. But please don't

  1336. presume upon it.

  1337. This judgment

  1338. here is delayed.

  1339. We don't know

  1340. for how long, but

  1341. the time of

  1342. judgment will

  1343. come.

  1344. And this delay

  1345. between our sin

  1346. and His judgment,

  1347. that delay is

  1348. meant to call

  1349. you to repentance.

  1350. repentance.

  1351. He's not done,

  1352. is He?

  1353. Look there, look

  1354. there, what else

  1355. God does for

  1356. sinners here.

  1357. In the midst of

  1358. judgment, verse 21,

  1359. we also, we see

  1360. hints of atonement.

  1361. The Lord God

  1362. made for Adam

  1363. and his wife

  1364. garments of

  1365. skins and

  1366. clothed them.

  1367. You remember how

  1368. they responded

  1369. earlier in the

  1370. chapter?

  1371. When they sinned

  1372. against the Lord

  1373. and they realized

  1374. they were naked,

  1375. what did they do?

  1376. They went

  1377. grabbing for

  1378. anything they

  1379. could find to

  1380. cover up their

  1381. sin.

  1382. They grabbed some

  1383. fig leaves and

  1384. they sewed them

  1385. together to try

  1386. and cover up

  1387. their shame.

  1388. They tried to

  1389. cover up their

  1390. own sin and

  1391. shame by their

  1392. own feeble

  1393. efforts.

  1394. But here, God

  1395. says, that's not

  1396. going to cut it.

  1397. You can't cover up

  1398. your own shame.

  1399. You can't do

  1400. anything to cover

  1401. up your sin and

  1402. hide your sin from

  1403. me.

  1404. You can't cover

  1405. yourself, but I

  1406. I can cover

  1407. you.

  1408. And how does

  1409. he do it?

  1410. He covers up

  1411. their shame here

  1412. by sacrifice.

  1413. Garments of

  1414. skins.

  1415. And don't you

  1416. see here an echo

  1417. of the gospel?

  1418. It's as if God

  1419. is telling them

  1420. and us, in

  1421. order for your

  1422. sin to be

  1423. covered, it's

  1424. going to require

  1425. sacrifice and I

  1426. have to be the

  1427. one to do it.

  1428. the same echo

  1429. will continue

  1430. through the

  1431. sacrifice of

  1432. bulls and

  1433. goats in the

  1434. temple and

  1435. these sacrifices

  1436. that cover the

  1437. sins and remove

  1438. the shame of the

  1439. people temporarily

  1440. until Christ

  1441. Jesus, the

  1442. lamb who was

  1443. slain from

  1444. before the

  1445. foundation of

  1446. the world,

  1447. comes and

  1448. gives his life

  1449. as a perfect

  1450. sacrifice to

  1451. bear our shame

  1452. and to atone

  1453. for our sin.

  1454. Do you see

  1455. God's mercy

  1456. in this

  1457. passage?

  1458. There's an

  1459. even clearer

  1460. picture of

  1461. his mercy

  1462. and his hope

  1463. here.

  1464. Circle back

  1465. with me to

  1466. verse 15

  1467. here as we

  1468. close.

  1469. Verse 15

  1470. is as I

  1471. said here

  1472. we see the

  1473. clearest display

  1474. of God's

  1475. mercy towards

  1476. sinners in

  1477. this promise

  1478. of the gospel.

  1479. Look at

  1480. verse 15.

  1481. I will put

  1482. enmity between

  1483. you and the

  1484. woman,

  1485. between your

  1486. offspring and

  1487. her offspring.

  1488. He shall

  1489. bruise your

  1490. head and

  1491. you shall

  1492. bruise his

  1493. heel.

  1494. This verse

  1495. is the promise

  1496. of the gospel.

  1497. God promises

  1498. that all of

  1499. this pain

  1500. that you and

  1501. I feel on

  1502. this side of

  1503. the fall,

  1504. out here,

  1505. out of the

  1506. garden,

  1507. all of the

  1508. brokenness that

  1509. you and I

  1510. experience,

  1511. all of the

  1512. difficulties of

  1513. life,

  1514. all of the

  1515. tragedies and

  1516. the griefs and

  1517. the toil and

  1518. the labor,

  1519. all of it will

  1520. be done away

  1521. for good because

  1522. I will send

  1523. someone born of

  1524. the woman who

  1525. will crush the

  1526. head of the

  1527. serpent.

  1528. We rejoice

  1529. that despite

  1530. Satan's best

  1531. efforts to keep

  1532. this promise from

  1533. coming to pass,

  1534. God has done

  1535. exactly what

  1536. he promised.

  1537. Jesus Christ

  1538. is the

  1539. promised

  1540. offspring of

  1541. the woman.

  1542. Jesus Christ,

  1543. the serpent

  1544. struck his

  1545. heel at the

  1546. cross,

  1547. but Jesus

  1548. crushed the

  1549. serpent's head

  1550. by rising from

  1551. the grave,

  1552. never to die

  1553. again,

  1554. so that now

  1555. sinners like you

  1556. and I can be

  1557. counted as sons

  1558. and daughters of

  1559. God by faith in

  1560. him.

  1561. This promised

  1562. seed of the

  1563. woman,

  1564. he wore a

  1565. crown of

  1566. thorns upon

  1567. his brow.

  1568. He bore

  1569. our curse

  1570. so that now

  1571. he stands to

  1572. say to

  1573. banished sinners

  1574. like us,

  1575. all that the

  1576. Father gives

  1577. to me will

  1578. come to me

  1579. and whoever

  1580. comes to me

  1581. I will never

  1582. cast out.

  1583. Friend,

  1584. the bad news

  1585. is our sin

  1586. has earned

  1587. God's judgment.

  1588. But the

  1589. good news of

  1590. the gospel

  1591. is that God

  1592. is merciful

  1593. to sinners.

  1594. His mercy

  1595. and his love

  1596. and his grace

  1597. towards sinners

  1598. like me and

  1599. like you is

  1600. seen and

  1601. found only

  1602. in the

  1603. promised seed

  1604. of the woman,

  1605. Jesus Christ.

  1606. Lord, we

  1607. praise you for

  1608. this promise of

  1609. the gospel.

  1610. We praise you

  1611. that Christ has

  1612. come, that he

  1613. has crushed

  1614. the head

  1615. of the serpent.

  1616. And Lord, we

  1617. praise you that

  1618. he will come

  1619. again to finish

  1620. what he started.

  1621. And Lord, we

  1622. ask now as we

  1623. engage in this

  1624. spiritual battle

  1625. as sons and

  1626. daughters of God,

  1627. Lord, we ask

  1628. for your strength

  1629. and we ask that

  1630. we would walk

  1631. in the victory

  1632. that Christ has

  1633. won for us

  1634. at the cross.

  1635. We pray this

  1636. in Jesus' name.

  1637. Amen.

  1638. Amen.

  1639. Amen.
