  1. Well, would you please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to Genesis chapter 4.

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  2. It's my privilege to preach this morning and continue our series in Genesis.

  3. We've made our way to chapter 4, and I told you the first three chapters would be a slow walk through the garden.

  4. Now we're outside of the garden, and we're going to pick up our pace just a little bit.

  5. So we'll read all of chapter 4 this morning, and I plan to hit on chapter 5 as well.

  6. But as we stand and read God's Word, I will read chapter 4, verses 1 through 26.

  7. So when you've found it, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word.

  8. Genesis 4, 1 through 26.

  9. Now Adam knew his wife, Eve, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying,

  10. I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.

  11. And again she bore his brother Abel.

  12. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground.

  13. In the course of time, Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground,

  14. and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions.

  15. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard.

  16. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.

  17. The Lord said to Cain,

  18. Cain, why are you angry?

  19. Why has your face fallen?

  20. If you do well, will you not be accepted?

  21. And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door.

  22. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.

  23. Cain spoke to Abel his brother,

  24. and when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.

  25. Then the Lord said to Cain,

  26. Where is Abel your brother?

  27. He said,

  28. I do not know.

  29. Am I my brother's keeper?

  30. And the Lord said,

  31. What have you done?

  32. The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground.

  33. And now you are cursed from the ground,

  34. which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.

  35. When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength.

  36. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.

  37. Cain said to the Lord,

  38. My punishment is greater than I can bear.

  39. Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground,

  40. and from your face I shall be hidden.

  41. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth,

  42. and whoever finds me will kill me.

  43. Then the Lord said to him,

  44. Not so.

  45. If anyone kills Cain,

  46. vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.

  47. And the Lord put a mark on Cain,

  48. lest any who found him should attack him.

  49. Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord

  50. and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

  51. Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch.

  52. When he built a city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch.

  53. To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mahuajel,

  54. and Mahujael followed Methusel, excuse me,

  55. and Methusel fathered Lamech, and Lamech took two wives.

  56. The name of the one was Ada, and the name of the other, Zillah.

  57. Ada bore Jabal.

  58. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.

  59. His brother's name was Jubal.

  60. He was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.

  61. Zillah also bore Tubal-Cain.

  62. He was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron.

  63. The sister of Tubal-Cain was Nema.

  64. Lamech said to his wives,

  65. Ada and Zillah, hear my voice.

  66. You wives of Lamech, listen to what I say.

  67. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.

  68. If Cain's revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech's is seventy-sevenfold.

  69. And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth.

  70. For she said, God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.

  71. To Seth also was born a son, and he called his name Enosh.

  72. At that time, people began to call upon the name of the Lord.

  73. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  74. Father, we praise you for your word.

  75. We praise you for the promise of your word, of the gospel of Christ.

  76. And we pray now as we sit to receive your word, would you speak to us today?

  77. We pray in Christ's name.

  78. Amen.

  79. You may be seated.

  80. One of my favorite verses comes from the book of Proverbs.

  81. It's Proverbs 13, 12.

  82. It says this,

  83. Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.

  84. Now, I first memorized this verse when I was in college,

  85. and I thought about it often in the months that followed,

  86. especially as Amanda and I got engaged, and we had a promise to be married.

  87. We put our hope in that coming day, and there's this long waiting period where it felt like each and every day that passed,

  88. that hope was deferred.

  89. And we see the same thing with expectant parents, don't we?

  90. Now, you're expecting a child, but there's this built-in waiting period of about nine months

  91. where you're hoping and longing and waiting for that coming day,

  92. but hope day after day after day, month after month is put off, it's deferred,

  93. until the moment finally comes and the baby is born,

  94. and you get to hold that newborn baby in your hands,

  95. and nothing is like that experience of a longing finally fulfilled,

  96. a desire fulfilled.

  97. It's a tree of life, the Proverbs says.

  98. Last week, we saw in the midst of the judgment of God for sin,

  99. God made this big promise in Genesis 3.15.

  100. You remember what he said, Genesis 3.15.

  101. This verse is a key verse for the whole book of Genesis,

  102. but not just the book of Genesis.

  103. As we go through the Scriptures, what we see is that this promise is unfolded

  104. throughout the rest of the Scriptures leading up to the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

  105. Here's what he said.

  106. God said to the serpent,

  107. I will put enmity between you and the woman,

  108. between your offspring and her offspring.

  109. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.

  110. This promise in the midst of the judgment is hope,

  111. and in the midst of this brokenness in the garden,

  112. God will send someone born of the woman

  113. who will come and crush the head of the serpent.

  114. This promised offspring is going to come,

  115. and he's going to make all things right.

  116. He's going to come and fix what's been broken by sin.

  117. And this promise is what gave Adam and Eve hope,

  118. even outside of the garden in a sin-cursed world.

  119. But here as we come to our passage this morning,

  120. now in chapter 4,

  121. tragically, this hope is deferred.

  122. In fact, for a brief moment,

  123. it looks like there's no hope at all.

  124. The hope in a snake-crushing son of the woman

  125. has been snuffed out with the first murder in human history.

  126. And as we read this account,

  127. as we read this chapter,

  128. we're left wondering,

  129. will God's promises come to pass?

  130. Will God bring forth this promised offspring of the woman?

  131. For a moment,

  132. it looks like the offspring of the serpent is winning the battle.

  133. Will God's promise prevail even in the midst of darkness?

  134. Well, what we see,

  135. the answer that we get here from Genesis chapter 4,

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  136. and as we zoom out throughout the rest of the scriptures,

  137. is that God's promise always prevails.

  138. So let's look at our text this morning.

  139. And first, what we see here is hope provided.

  140. Hope provided.

  141. Look there with me to verse 1.

  142. And again, remember where we are,

  143. the context of this passage.

  144. We are now outside of the garden.

  145. Adam and Eve have sinned against the Lord.

  146. They've been thrust out away from the presence of the Lord.

  147. They're banished from the garden of Eden.

  148. And yet, even there in a sin-cursed world,

  149. we see that God provides hope for them.

  150. In obedience to God's command,

  151. to be fruitful and multiply,

  152. they have children.

  153. These children are offspring of the woman.

  154. Eve conceived and bore Cain,

  155. and again she bore another son,

  156. his brother Abel.

  157. So now,

  158. now we have two image bearers born into the world.

  159. And now in light of this promise that God has made,

  160. we have two distinct possibilities.

  161. The question is,

  162. will either one of these children be the snake crusher?

  163. Will either one of these be the one who will come and set right what's been destroyed by sin?

  164. Now that God has made this promise,

  165. every offspring of the woman comes with this weight of expectation and anticipation.

  166. Could this be the one?

  167. Some of y'all I know follow the royal family.

  168. And I don't have anything to do with it.

  169. I don't understand people that follow them as closely as they do,

  170. but I know some people really, really do.

  171. And you know that every time a child is born into the royal family,

  172. there's all this attention and just focus given to this child.

  173. Why?

  174. Because of the possibility that one day this child who's just been born,

  175. this baby may one day grow up to be the king.

  176. They may grow up to be the queen.

  177. This child may grow up to rule and to reign.

  178. The same anticipation is given here.

  179. There's a sense of anticipation.

  180. Every time a son is born of the woman,

  181. will this be the one who will come and reign and rule and defeat sin in the grave?

  182. Will he be the one to crush the head of the serpent?

  183. And hope is provided here with these two children.

  184. What we see, though, is from the very beginning,

  185. these two children take two very different paths, don't they?

  186. And isn't it funny how two kids born of the same parents,

  187. raised in the same environment,

  188. can come out so different from one another,

  189. with different personalities and different interests and different skill sets.

  190. So we see that play out here with Cain and Abel, don't we?

  191. Verse 2 tells us Abel is a keeper of the sheep.

  192. He's a shepherd.

  193. Cain is a worker of the ground.

  194. He's a farmer.

  195. And just notice already here with this new earth,

  196. with these new people,

  197. a very minimal population here in the world,

  198. we're already beginning to see diversity

  199. and gifting and skill set and variety on display, aren't we?

  200. Verse 3 tells us these two brothers,

  201. with their two different vocations,

  202. bring to the Lord two different offerings,

  203. and the Lord has two very different responses.

  204. Now, here's the tension in the passage.

  205. Look there with me.

  206. Cain brings an offering of the fruit of the ground,

  207. and Abel brings an offering of the firstborn of his flock with the fat portions.

  208. And how does the Lord respond?

  209. Look there.

  210. The Lord had regard for Abel and his offering,

  211. but for Cain and his offering, he had no regard.

  212. And we should ask, well, why not?

  213. Why is the Lord accepting one offering and not accepting the other?

  214. It makes complete sense to me, at least on the surface,

  215. given their vocations.

  216. Abel's a shepherd.

  217. He brings some sheep.

  218. Cain is a farmer.

  219. He brings some fruit.

  220. Why would the Lord regard one and not the other?

  221. We're going to answer that.

  222. But before we do,

  223. I want you to notice here,

  224. we should notice that it is the Lord,

  225. it is the Lord who decides what offering is acceptable to him.

  226. The Lord dictates what is and what is not right and good and acceptable worship.

  227. We need to understand this,

  228. especially in our man-centered society,

  229. that worship ultimately is not catered to our preferences.

  230. True and genuine worship is not about us and our wants.

  231. It is about the Lord and his wants.

  232. True worship isn't man-centered.

  233. It is God-centered.

  234. And the question of true worship is not ultimately what's pleasing to me.

  235. It's what is pleasing to the Lord.

  236. And here we see a basic fundamental distinction here

  237. between true and false worship.

  238. We read a passage earlier in Hebrews

  239. that I think helps us understand the difference.

  240. And I'm going to read it again here.

  241. Hebrews 11 verse 4

    Hebrews 11:4

  242. says,

  243. By faith,

  244. Abel offered a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain,

  245. through which he was commended as righteous.

  246. God commending him by accepting his gifts.

  247. And through his faith,

  248. though he died,

  249. still he speaks.

  250. By faith,

  251. Abel offered to God

  252. a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain.

  253. Two brothers,

  254. two vocations,

  255. two offerings,

  256. one is accepted,

  257. one is disregarded.

  258. What's the difference?

  259. Only one was offered up to the Lord by faith.

  260. True and acceptable worship

  261. in the sight of the Lord

  262. must come from a heart of faith.

  263. Without faith,

  264. it is impossible to please him.

  265. True and acceptable worship

  266. must come from a heart of faith,

  267. meaning a heart that trusts him,

  268. latches onto him,

  269. loves him,

  270. honors him,

  271. seeks him above all else

  272. and disregards self.

  273. That's what faith is.

  274. These two offerings,

  275. ultimately,

  276. they reveal two completely different postures of the heart.

  277. This is the difference between faith,

  278. which is trusting God,

  279. and self,

  280. works,

  281. trusting self.

  282. It's the difference between a heart that seeks the Lord

  283. and a heart that just comes and does whatever you think you have to do.

  284. Go through the motions.

  285. Do you realize that two people can sit in the same place

  286. and sing the same songs

  287. and hear the same scriptures

  288. and receive the same sermon

  289. and come to the same worship service

  290. and one person's offering of worship

  291. be accepted

  292. and the others not?

  293. You may say,

  294. well,

  295. I'm here,

  296. I'm standing,

  297. I'm singing,

  298. I'm giving,

  299. I'm doing all the things.

  300. Why would God accept one and not the other?

  301. The difference,

  302. I'll say it again,

  303. the only acceptable worship

  304. in the sight of the Lord

  305. is worship that comes from a heart of faith.

  306. we need to ask ourselves,

  307. as we come in,

  308. as we gather for worship,

  309. as we prepare ourselves for this holy moment

  310. of receiving the word of the Lord,

  311. of offering up praise to him,

  312. are we offering up a sacrifice of praise

  313. that comes from a heart of faith

  314. or are we simply checking the box,

  315. going through the motions?

  316. We see here God has provided hope

  317. with these two children

  318. and already we see their paths begin to diverge

  319. and what we see happens next

  320. is that tragically this hope that was provided

  321. for a moment is deferred.

  322. So second,

  323. second,

  324. we see hope deferred.

  325. Look there with me to verse five.

  326. Verse five,

  327. it says,

  328. Cain,

  329. in response to the Lord

  330. disregarding his sacrifice,

  331. how does he respond?

  332. Cain is very angry,

  333. it says,

  334. and his face fell.

  335. And the Lord said to Cain,

  336. why are you angry?

  337. Why has your face fallen?

  338. If you do well,

  339. will you not be accepted?

  340. And if you do not do well,

  341. here's the warning,

  342. sin is crouching at the door.

  343. It's desire is for you,

  344. but you must rule over it.

  345. Now your version might say something like,

  346. it's desire is contrary to you.

  347. It's the same idea,

  348. isn't it?

  349. We saw this language in chapter three.

  350. You can flip back there

  351. or look back there

  352. to verse 16 of chapter three

  353. and you remember from last week,

  354. Eve,

  355. it said,

  356. Eve,

  357. your desire will be for your husband,

  358. but he will rule over you.

  359. And so now,

  360. just like with Eve's desire,

  361. to rule over her husband,

  362. now God warns Cain,

  363. sin wants to rule over you.

  364. Sin wants to overcome you.

  365. It wants to overpower you.

  366. It is coming to destroy you.

  367. But he tells Cain,

  368. you must rule over it.

  369. This is a test here,

  370. isn't it?

  371. This is a moment of opportunity,

  372. a moment of testing,

  373. rule or be ruled.

  374. Kill or be killed.

  375. Hunt or be hunted.

  376. John Owen,

  377. he used to say,

  378. be killing sin

  379. or sin will be killing you.

  380. This is what Cain is facing here.

  381. All hope hangs in the balance.

  382. Will Cain prove to be obedient to the Lord?

  383. Will he trust and obey the word of the Lord?

  384. Will he keep the possibility alive

  385. that perhaps,

  386. maybe,

  387. just maybe,

  388. he will be the one to triumph over sin?

  389. Here we see verse 8.

  390. All hope in Cain

  391. is shattered.

  392. He does not rule over sin.

  393. Sin rules over Cain.

  394. Cain spoke to Abel, his brother.

  395. I don't know what he said.

  396. I don't believe it was pleasant.

  397. And when they were out in the field,

  398. Cain rose up against his brother,

  399. Abel,

  400. and killed him.

  401. This is the first murder

  402. in human history.

  403. Now we read something like this

  404. and we're almost,

  405. we're just so numb

  406. and desensitized to violence.

  407. We live in it every day.

  408. We see it every day on the news.

  409. We read about it.

  410. We hear about it.

  411. There's violence all around us.

  412. We're just so numb

  413. to the weight

  414. and the heaviness,

  415. the heaviness,

  416. the severity of the sin.

  417. This is the first murder

  418. in the history of mankind.

  419. And just look how far we've fallen

  420. in just a short period of time.

  421. Cain proves to be a sinner

  422. and a murderer

  423. and a rebel to the word of God

  424. just like his parents before him.

  425. But even more than that,

  426. the deeper issue here

  427. is that Cain proves himself

  428. to be an offspring of the serpent.

  429. And Cain and Abel may be physically

  430. members of the same family.

  431. They're brothers physically by blood.

  432. But spiritually speaking,

  433. they are from two entirely different families.

  434. One is of faith

  435. and the other is faithless.

  436. This murder.

  437. We have to understand this story

  438. in chapter 4,

  439. this murder of one brother

  440. against another.

  441. This is the first chapter

  442. of the unfolding conflict

  443. between the seed of the woman

  444. and the seed of the serpent.

  445. And for just a brief moment,

  446. it looks like the offspring

  447. of the serpent is winning.

  448. It looks like hope is lost.

  449. And for just a brief moment,

  450. Adam and Eve are wondering

  451. how in the world

  452. will God's promises come to pass?

  453. In one act of violence,

  454. Cain has snuffed out hope

  455. that either one of these children

  456. might be the snake crusher

  457. God has promised.

  458. For a moment here,

  459. hope is deferred.

  460. Hope is crushed.

  461. And we should notice

  462. how familiar all of this story sounds.

  463. This is a replay

  464. of what Adam and Eve

  465. just experienced in the garden,

  466. isn't it?

  467. Did you notice the similarities here

  468. between these stories?

  469. That we saw a replay of the sin.

  470. Cain disregarded the word of the Lord

  471. just like Adam and Eve did.

  472. And we see a replay

  473. of the Lord's pursuit of the sinner.

  474. Verse 9,

  475. The Lord said to Cain,

  476. Where is Abel your brother?

  477. Do you hear the echoes?

  478. Where are you, Adam?

  479. Who told you you were naked?

  480. We see a replay of the sinner

  481. hiding his sin.

  482. I don't know.

  483. Am I my brother's keeper?

  484. This woman you gave me,

  485. she gave me the fruit.

  486. The man and the woman hid

  487. and covered themselves.

  488. You see the echoes here.

  489. Cain hides his sin from the Lord,

  490. but it goes a step further,

  491. doesn't it?

  492. He lies straight to the Lord's face.

  493. We see a replay of the Lord's judgment

  494. on the sinner.

  495. The Lord said,

  496. What have you done?

  497. The voice of your brother's blood

  498. is crying to me from the ground,

  499. and now you are cursed from the ground,

  500. which has opened its mouth

  501. to receive your brother's blood

  502. from your hand.

  503. When you work the ground,

  504. it shall no longer yield to you its strength.

  505. You shall be a fugitive

  506. and a wanderer on the earth.

  507. All of this

  508. is a sad reenactment

  509. of the garden,

  510. which shows us

  511. that this problem of sin

  512. is not just an isolated incident.

  513. And it doesn't even reset

  514. with each generation.

  515. We don't come in on a blank slate.

  516. This problem of sin

  517. is a virus.

  518. It's a sickness.

  519. It's a power

  520. that enslaves and corrupts.

  521. It's passed down

  522. from generation to generation,

  523. and things are not getting better here.

  524. They're getting worse.

  525. You wonder,

  526. why in the world

  527. the world we live in

  528. is so broken?

  529. You watch the news

  530. and you see the violence

  531. that we see every single day,

  532. and you wonder,

  533. how could anybody

  534. hate somebody so much?

  535. The answer is,

  536. we sin

  537. because we are sinners,

  538. both by nature

  539. and by choice.

  540. We have inherited

  541. the same sin

  542. that Cain has inherited

  543. from his brother,

  544. from his father, Adam.

  545. And yet,

  546. just as we saw

  547. in the garden,

  548. we see here,

  549. despite it all,

  550. replayed once again,

  551. God is merciful

  552. to sinners.

  553. Verse 13,

  554. Cain grieves

  555. his judgment

  556. and says to the Lord,

  557. my punishment

  558. is greater

  559. than I can bear.

  560. You've driven me today

  561. away from the ground

  562. and away from your face.

  563. I shall be hidden.

  564. I shall be a fugitive

  565. and a wanderer

  566. on the earth.

  567. And he worries,

  568. whoever will find me

  569. will kill me.

  570. But listen to this,

  571. the Lord responds

  572. with this provision

  573. of mercy.

  574. Not so.

  575. If anyone kills Cain,

  576. vengeance shall be taken

  577. on him sevenfold.

  578. The Lord mercifully

  579. put a mark on Cain,

  580. lest any who found him

  581. should attack him.

  582. And then Cain

  583. went away

  584. from the presence

  585. of the Lord,

  586. like Adam and Eve

  587. before him,

  588. and settled

  589. in the land of Nod,

  590. east of Eden.

  591. Abel is gone.

  592. Cain is banished.

  593. Neither one of them

  594. are the snake crusher

  595. that God has promised.

  596. And again,

  597. the question comes

  598. to the forefront.

  599. Will God accomplish

  600. what he's promised?

  601. Will the promises

  602. of God prevail

  603. even in this bleak darkness?

  604. forgiveness?

  605. Third,

  606. third,

  607. we see hope

  608. is restored.

  609. Look there with me

  610. to verse 17.

  611. Hope is restored.

  612. Here,

  613. starting in verse 17

  614. and through the rest

  615. of the chapter

  616. and then even on

  617. to chapter 5.

  618. Again,

  619. the question is,

  620. will the promised one

  621. come through Cain?

  622. We know that Cain's

  623. a murderer.

  624. We know that Cain

  625. is wicked

  626. and Cain belongs

  627. to the offspring

  628. of the evil one

  629. but could it be

  630. that the snake crusher

  631. will come through

  632. his line?

  633. And what we see here

  634. in the rest of chapter 4

  635. is two distinct legacies.

  636. Look there with me

  637. at the legacy

  638. of Cain's line.

  639. Verse 17.

  640. Cain knew his wife

  641. and she conceived

  642. and bore Enoch

  643. and when he built a city

  644. he called the name

  645. of the city

  646. after the name

  647. of his son,

  648. Enoch.

  649. Enoch bore Irad

  650. and Irad,

  651. Mahujael

  652. and Mahujael

  653. and Methusael

  654. and Methusael

  655. Lamech.

  656. Lamech took two wives.

  657. One was Ada,

  658. the other Zillah.

  659. Ada bore Jabal

  660. He was the father

  661. of those who dwell

  662. in tents

  663. and have livestock

  664. and his brother's name

  665. was Jubal

  666. and he was the father

  667. of those who play

  668. the lyre and the pipe.

  669. Zillah also bore Tubal Cain

  670. and he was the forger

  671. of all instruments

  672. of bronze and iron

  673. and the sister

  674. of Tubal Cain

  675. was Nema.

  676. Do you hear

  677. what he's tracing here?

  678. He's outlining

  679. the legacy

  680. of the line of Cain

  681. and by all accounts

  682. the contributions

  683. of the family of Cain

  684. are impressive,

  685. aren't they?

  686. These are city builders

  687. and the first musicians

  688. come from this line.

  689. Forgers of instruments

  690. and tools,

  691. these guys are making

  692. some monumental contributions

  693. to the world.

  694. We see development here

  695. of culture and art.

  696. They make incredible contributions

  697. to this developing society,

  698. don't they?

  699. But despite these contributions,

  700. what we see

  701. is that ultimately

  702. at the root,

  703. the legacy of Cain's line

  704. is wickedness.

  705. Look there to verse 23.

  706. Lamech said to his wives,

  707. he's a polygamist.

  708. Well, this is new.

  709. This is a new development

  710. of sin and wickedness.

  711. Sin is progressing.

  712. The virus is spreading.

  713. He says to his wives,

  714. Ada and Zillah,

  715. hear my voice,

  716. you wives of Lamech.

  717. Listen to what I say.

  718. I have killed a man

  719. for wounding me.

  720. He's not just a polygamist,

  721. he's a murderer.

  722. And the murders

  723. don't stop with Cain.

  724. He has a legacy of violence.

  725. It runs in the family.

  726. I've killed a young man

  727. for striking me.

  728. He's not just a murderer.

  729. He's vengeful.

  730. He's bloodthirsty.

  731. This isn't equal justice.

  732. It's not an eye for an eye

  733. and a tooth for a tooth.

  734. He kills a young man

  735. for wounding me,

  736. a young man for striking me.

  737. This is over and above the top.

  738. You hurt me,

  739. I kill you.

  740. Again,

  741. we see sin

  742. and wickedness

  743. is multiplying here

  744. on the earth.

  745. Things aren't getting better.

  746. They're getting much,

  747. much worse.

  748. And he boasts in it,

  749. doesn't he?

  750. If Cain's revenge

  751. is sevenfold,

  752. then Lamech's revenge

  753. is seventy-sevenfold.

  754. He's arrogant.

  755. Boastful.

  756. It's a mixed bag here

  757. with Cain's legacy,

  758. isn't it?

  759. Some very good,

  760. some incredible,

  761. wonderful,

  762. good contributions

  763. mixed up with great wickedness.

  764. And we can look at our own culture

  765. and see the same thing,

  766. can't we?

  767. Men and women of all stripes,

  768. believer and non-believer alike,

  769. are capable of making

  770. incredible contributions

  771. to society.

  772. Even non-believers

  773. are capable of making

  774. incredible contributions

  775. to art and culture

  776. and science

  777. and technology.

  778. And as they do so,

  779. what they're doing,

  780. willingly or not,

  781. whether they're aware

  782. of it or not,

  783. is they are imaging forth,

  784. they're representing,

  785. they're shining forth

  786. the glory of God,

  787. even non-believers.

  788. When Stephen Hawking

  789. explains astronomy

  790. and physics,

  791. now we may,

  792. with our limited understanding,

  793. disagree with some

  794. of what he says,

  795. but even in the exercise

  796. of the brilliance

  797. of his mind,

  798. he's demonstrating

  799. some of the glory of God.

  800. John Lennon

  801. and Paul McCartney,

  802. an atheist

  803. and an agnostic,

  804. when they come together

  805. and they write a song,

  806. the whole world recognizes

  807. that's beautiful.

  808. It's wonderful.

  809. It's art.

  810. It's music.

  811. And yet,

  812. they reject him

  813. and their use

  814. of the gifts of God.

  815. This is called

  816. common grace.

  817. But,

  818. despite their incredible

  819. contributions,

  820. because at the root

  821. of their offerings

  822. is not faith,

  823. before the Lord,

  824. ultimately,

  825. it is disregarded.

  826. Ultimately,

  827. here,

  828. as we trace

  829. the line of Cain,

  830. what we see is

  831. his legacy

  832. is wickedness.

  833. But here in verse 25,

  834. look there with me.

  835. once again,

  836. hope is renewed.

  837. It says,

  838. Adam knew his wife again,

  839. and she bore a son

  840. and called his name Seth.

  841. For she said,

  842. God has appointed for me

  843. another offspring

  844. instead of April.

  845. For Cain killed him.

  846. another offspring.

  847. Again,

  848. hope is restored.

  849. Hope is renewed

  850. here through the line

  851. of Seth.

  852. And look at his legacy.

  853. It's not ultimately

  854. art or medicine

  855. or music

  856. or science

  857. or any of this.

  858. Verse 26,

  859. what's his legacy?

  860. To Seth also

  861. was born a son,

  862. and he called his name

  863. Enosh,

  864. and at that time,

  865. people began

  866. to call upon

  867. the name

  868. of the Lord.

  869. This

  870. is the first

  871. formal,

  872. gathered,

  873. official

  874. Yahweh worship

  875. in the history

  876. of the world.

  877. The legacy

  878. of Seth's line,

  879. like Abel before him,

  880. is one of faith

  881. and genuine

  882. worship

  883. of the Lord.

  884. See here

  885. the distinction.

  886. Do you see it?

  887. See here

  888. the difference

  889. between these two lines?

  890. I want you to

  891. see here

  892. the difference

  893. between faith

  894. and faithlessness.

  895. Between wickedness

  896. and righteousness.

  897. between duty

  898. and delight.

  899. Between boasting

  900. in self

  901. and boasting

  902. in the Lord.

  903. Between external

  904. impressiveness

  905. and a singular

  906. devotion to please

  907. and worship

  908. the Lord alone.

  909. Do you see the difference?

  910. The question

  911. for us

  912. this morning,

  913. church,

  914. is which

  915. one

  916. will we

  917. be?

  918. To which

  919. family

  920. do you

  921. belong?

  922. belong?

  923. Every single

  924. one of us

  925. and every single

  926. person in the world

  927. belongs to

  928. one of these

  929. two distinct

  930. families.

  931. We are either

  932. offspring of the

  933. serpent

  934. by nature

  935. or we are

  936. children of God

  937. by grace.

  938. And what's the

  939. difference between

  940. the two?

  941. Faith

  942. in the promise

  943. of God.

  944. We are

  945. saved by grace

  946. through faith.

  947. You know,

  948. that's the same

  949. way any Old

  950. Testament believer

  951. was saved too,

  952. by the way.

  953. They are saved

  954. by grace

  955. through faith

  956. in the promises

  957. of God.

  958. The only

  959. difference is

  960. they are

  961. looking forward

  962. to when

  963. this promise

  964. might one

  965. day be

  966. fulfilled

  967. while we

  968. get to

  969. look backwards

  970. to Christ

  971. Jesus

  972. in the gospel

  973. and see how

  974. every promise

  975. of God

  976. finds our

  977. yes and

  978. amen

  979. in Him.

  980. Here with

  981. the birth

  982. of Seth,

  983. hope is

  984. renewed,

  985. but unfortunately

  986. for Eve,

  987. as we know

  988. as we zoom

  989. out from this

  990. account,

  991. it is a long

  992. way to go

  993. here before

  994. that desire

  995. is fulfilled.

  996. The rest

  997. of the Bible

  998. will trace

  999. these two

  1000. lines

  1001. and these

  1002. two conflicting

  1003. families.

  1004. The seed

  1005. of the woman

  1006. against the

  1007. seed of the

  1008. serpent

  1009. and the

  1010. seed of the

  1011. serpent

  1012. will continue

  1013. to try

  1014. and try

  1015. and try

  1016. and try

  1017. to snuff

  1018. out the

  1019. seed of the

  1020. woman.

  1021. But through

  1022. a long

  1023. and painful

  1024. and bleak

  1025. history of

  1026. sin and

  1027. apparent

  1028. hopelessness,

  1029. the good

  1030. news of

  1031. the gospel

  1032. is that

  1033. God's

  1034. promises

  1035. always

  1036. prevail.

  1037. I want

  1038. you to

  1039. just look

  1040. at chapter

  1041. five with

  1042. me and

  1043. take a look

  1044. at this

  1045. genealogy and

  1046. I realize

  1047. even as I

  1048. say that,

  1049. right,

  1050. some of you

  1051. are afraid.

  1052. I know

  1053. that this

  1054. is part

  1055. of what you

  1056. just skip

  1057. over this

  1058. in your

  1059. Bible reading

  1060. plan.

  1061. I get

  1062. that,

  1063. I know.

  1064. But what

  1065. I want you

  1066. to understand

  1067. is that this

  1068. list of names

  1069. here is not

  1070. just tracing

  1071. history.

  1072. These

  1073. genealogies

  1074. are tracing

  1075. promise.

  1076. Put your

  1077. finger there

  1078. in Genesis

  1079. five and

  1080. I want you

  1081. to turn

  1082. over to

  1083. Luke chapter

  1084. three.

  1085. And here

  1086. we find

  1087. another

  1088. genealogy.

  1089. And these

  1090. two long

  1091. lists of

  1092. names,

  1093. they trace

  1094. the very

  1095. same promise.

  1096. They tell

  1097. the same

  1098. exact story.

  1099. the only

  1100. difference is

  1101. that Genesis

  1102. five ends

  1103. with hope

  1104. deferred,

  1105. but Luke

  1106. chapter three

  1107. shows us

  1108. desire

  1109. fulfilled.

  1110. All of

  1111. chapter five

  1112. is summarized

  1113. there in Luke

  1114. chapter three.

  1115. We have to

  1116. read it

  1117. backwards,

  1118. the bottom

  1119. to top.

  1120. God

  1121. to Adam,

  1122. Adam

  1123. to Seth,

  1124. Seth

  1125. to Enos,

  1126. Enos

  1127. to Canaan,

  1128. Canaan

  1129. to Mahalel,

  1130. Mahalel to

  1131. Jared,

  1132. Jared to

  1133. Enoch,

  1134. Enoch to

  1135. Methuselah,

  1136. Methuselah to

  1137. Lamech,

  1138. Lamech to

  1139. Noah,

  1140. Noah to

  1141. Shem.

  1142. That's where

  1143. Genesis five

  1144. stops.

  1145. But here in

  1146. Luke three,

  1147. it keeps going.

  1148. And we trace

  1149. this promise

  1150. deferred,

  1151. this hope

  1152. deferred,

  1153. ultimately to

  1154. Noah,

  1155. eventually to

  1156. Abraham,

  1157. from Abraham

  1158. eventually to

  1159. David,

  1160. from David

  1161. eventually down

  1162. the line until

  1163. we get to

  1164. Joseph.

  1165. And from

  1166. Joseph and

  1167. Mary to

  1168. Jesus,

  1169. the Messiah,

  1170. Luke is

  1171. telling us,

  1172. finally,

  1173. at long

  1174. last,

  1175. in Jesus,

  1176. the promise

  1177. has been

  1178. fulfilled.

  1179. Our desire

  1180. has been

  1181. fulfilled

  1182. in Jesus.

  1183. Jesus

  1184. is the one

  1185. who will come,

  1186. now we know,

  1187. through the line

  1188. of Seth,

  1189. and crush the

  1190. head of the

  1191. serpent.

  1192. The question for

  1193. us this morning,

  1194. church,

  1195. is this,

  1196. will we

  1197. trust him

  1198. even if

  1199. for a

  1200. moment

  1201. hope is

  1202. deferred?

  1203. Will we

  1204. trust him

  1205. now by

  1206. faith even

  1207. when we

  1208. cannot yet

  1209. see him

  1210. by sight?

  1211. Will we

  1212. trust him

  1213. to return

  1214. and put an

  1215. end to

  1216. sin and

  1217. death and

  1218. darkness in

  1219. the devil even

  1220. while here and

  1221. now are so

  1222. often so

  1223. overwhelmed by

  1224. these things

  1225. here and

  1226. now?

  1227. Will you

  1228. trust him

  1229. by faith

  1230. that despite

  1231. the darkness

  1232. and despite

  1233. the opposition,

  1234. despite the

  1235. apparent hopelessness

  1236. of the moment,

  1237. despite the

  1238. delay,

  1239. that God's

  1240. promise will

  1241. prevail?

  1242. This conflict

  1243. between the

  1244. seed of the

  1245. woman and

  1246. the seed of

  1247. the serpent,

  1248. it hit its

  1249. climax at the

  1250. cross of

  1251. Christ.

  1252. And in a

  1253. moment of

  1254. darkness and

  1255. apparent

  1256. hopelessness,

  1257. for a moment

  1258. it looked as

  1259. if all hope

  1260. was lost.

  1261. The serpent

  1262. struck the

  1263. heel of the

  1264. son of the

  1265. woman and

  1266. all were left

  1267. wondering,

  1268. will God's

  1269. promises come

  1270. to pass?

  1271. At the

  1272. cross of

  1273. Christ it

  1274. looked like

  1275. the serpent

  1276. had won,

  1277. like the

  1278. battle had

  1279. been lost.

  1280. Will God's

  1281. promises prevail

  1282. even in the

  1283. midst of

  1284. darkness?

  1285. And the

  1286. answer that

  1287. we see is

  1288. yes!

  1289. God's

  1290. promises

  1291. prevail in

  1292. Christ.

  1293. Christ Jesus

  1294. rose from

  1295. the grave

  1296. and crushed

  1297. the serpent's

  1298. head so

  1299. that now by

  1300. faith,

  1301. sinners like

  1302. us can be

  1303. transferred,

  1304. delivered from

  1305. the domain of

  1306. darkness and

  1307. might become

  1308. sons and

  1309. daughters of

  1310. the living

  1311. God.

  1312. By faith in

  1313. the promised

  1314. seed of the

  1315. woman,

  1316. despite the

  1317. darkness and

  1318. apparent hopelessness

  1319. of the present,

  1320. we believe by

  1321. faith that

  1322. his promises

  1323. will prevail

  1324. one day soon

  1325. and very soon

  1326. church.

  1327. The Lord

  1328. will return.

  1329. Sin will be

  1330. no more.

  1331. Death will be

  1332. finished.

  1333. That cursed

  1334. serpent will be

  1335. done for good.

  1336. The sheep

  1337. will be

  1338. separated from

  1339. the goats.

  1340. These two

  1341. families,

  1342. these two

  1343. spiritual lines

  1344. will be

  1345. separated at

  1346. last and

  1347. the children

  1348. of God

  1349. will be

  1350. separated from

  1351. the children

  1352. of the

  1353. enemy.

  1354. The dead

  1355. will be

  1356. raised and

  1357. we who

  1358. know him

  1359. by faith

  1360. will live

  1361. with him

  1362. forever

  1363. in a new

  1364. and better

  1365. Eden,

  1366. a new

  1367. heavens

  1368. and the

  1369. new earth.

  1370. Is this

  1371. your hope

  1372. church?

  1373. Will you

  1374. trust his

  1375. promises

  1376. promises?

  1377. Even in

  1378. the midst

  1379. of darkness?

  1380. Father,

  1381. we praise

  1382. you that

  1383. all of the

  1384. promises of

  1385. God find

  1386. their yes

  1387. and amen

  1388. in Jesus

  1389. Christ.

  1390. We praise

  1391. you that

  1392. even now

  1393. as we live

  1394. in between

  1395. some promise

  1396. and fulfillment,

  1397. Lord, we pray

  1398. that we would

  1399. live by faith

  1400. and walk

  1401. by faith,

  1402. that we would

  1403. look back to

  1404. the cross

  1405. and the

  1406. resurrection

  1407. and be

  1408. reminded that

  1409. you have been

  1410. faithful to us

  1411. already and

  1412. surely you

  1413. will be

  1414. faithful again.

  1415. Lord, we pray

  1416. now, Lord, as we

  1417. stand to worship

  1418. you, would we

  1419. worship you by

  1420. faith?

  1421. We pray this in

  1422. Jesus' name.

  1423. Amen.
