  1. Please take your Bibles and let's open them up this morning to Genesis chapter 5.

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

  2. ! If you are just joining us for the first time, we've been preaching through the book of Genesis.

  3. We started chapter 1 verse 1 and we've made our way all the way to chapter 5.

  4. And one of the benefits of preaching the way that we do, working through books of the Bible,

  5. is that I feel like it really gives us a good understanding of the book as a whole.

  6. And it teaches us to read our Bible and understand passages in context.

  7. One of the challenges is I can't skip over difficult passages.

  8. And that's good and bad.

  9. So this morning, we get to preach a passage, I get to preach a passage,

  10. that if I were just picking a text on my own, I probably never would wind up here in Genesis chapter 5.

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

  11. But I hope what we'll see as we dive in together is that all Scripture is God-breathed.

  12. and is useful for teaching, correcting, rebuking.

  13. That the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  14. This Scripture is good for you.

  15. The Lord has good in it for us to see this morning.

  16. So if you would, let's turn to Genesis chapter 5.

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

  17. And I will read from chapter 5 through chapter 6 verse 8.

  18. A little bit of a longer passage this morning.

  19. If you're physically able, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word this morning.

  20. This is the book of the generations of Adam.

  21. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God.

  22. Male and female, he created them.

  23. And he blessed them and named them man when they were created.

  24. When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness.

  25. After his image, he named him Seth.

  26. The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters.

  27. Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.

  28. When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh.

  29. Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years, and he had other sons and daughters.

  30. Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.

  31. When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan.

  32. Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years, and he had other sons and daughters.

  33. Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.

  34. When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel.

  35. Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years, and he had other sons and daughters.

  36. Thus the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.

  37. When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared.

  38. Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared 830 years, and had other sons and daughters.

  39. Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.

  40. When Jared had lived 162 years, he fathered Enoch.

  41. Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years, and had other sons and daughters.

  42. Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.

  43. When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah.

  44. Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years, and had other sons and daughters.

  45. Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years.

  46. Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.

  47. When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech.

  48. Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years, and had other sons and daughters.

  49. Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.

  50. When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son and called his name Noah,

  51. saying,

  52. Out of the ground that the Lord had cursed,

  53. this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.

  54. Lamech lived after he fathered Noah 595 years, and had other sons and daughters.

  55. Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.

  56. After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

  57. When man began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them,

  58. the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive,

  59. and they took as their wives any they chose.

  60. Then the Lord said,

  61. My spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh.

  62. His days shall be 120 years.

  63. The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward,

  64. when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man, and they bore children to them.

  65. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

  66. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth,

  67. and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

  68. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth,

  69. and it grieved him to his heart.

  70. So the Lord said,

  71. I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land,

  72. man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens,

  73. for I am sorry that I have made them.

  74. But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

  75. The grass withers and the flower fades,

  76. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  77. Father, we praise you for your word.

  78. We praise you, Father, for your spirit.

  79. And we pray now as we receive this word,

  80. would you speak to us through the preaching of your word?

  81. Would you empower it by your spirit so that we might see Christ in it?

  82. We pray in Jesus' name.

  83. Amen.

  84. Amen.

  85. You may be seated.

  86. Well, you may have heard the phrase,

  87. big problems require big solutions.

  88. Or maybe you've heard it like this,

  89. band-aids don't fix bullet holes.

  90. Now, the bigger the problem is,

  91. oftentimes the more drastic the solution needs to be.

  92. And parents realize this as we raise our kids.

  93. Sometimes a small infraction just requires a little bit of discipline.

  94. But as problems start to mount,

  95. instincts ought to kick in.

  96. And you ought to realize something drastic has to happen here.

  97. Big changes need to be made.

  98. You see it in businesses.

  99. Every now and then a business will run into issues.

  100. They'll start to flounder and fail.

  101. And when that happens,

  102. sometimes the only hope is that somebody recognizes it before it's too late

  103. and steps in and starts to make some drastic changes.

  104. We see it happening in our government right now.

  105. Whatever side of the political aisle you may find yourself on,

  106. we can all agree our current regime recognizes,

  107. believes that there are serious issues,

  108. and they're taking some pretty drastic measures to correct it.

  109. Well, here in our passage this morning,

  110. we are seeing with more and more and more increasing clarity

  111. that we have a big problem on our hands.

  112. Now, we're backing all the way up again,

  113. all the way back to Adam,

  114. and we're seeing this terrible reign of sin,

  115. starting with Adam and continuing on down the line

  116. in every single individual born of the line of Adam.

  117. Things are not getting better here.

  118. Things are getting worse,

  119. and we see that a band-aid solution is not going to fix the problem.

  120. And the big idea here as we look at our text is that God will judge sin.

  121. God will address the problem of sin.

  122. And the only hope for sinful people is that God Himself will provide a solution to our sin.

  123. That God Himself will be gracious to sinners like us.

  124. So let's look at our text,

  125. and I want to look first at this genealogy in chapter 5.

  126. We touched on it last time.

  127. We were in Genesis two weeks ago.

  128. And what I want to do here is let's just make a few observations here,

  129. and then we'll spend the bulk of our time in the first eight verses of chapter 6.

  130. So let's look at this genealogy here.

  131. And I have three observations for us.

  132. For one, I want you to remember here,

  133. and this is important,

  134. This genealogy is tracing promise.

  135. You remember this from last time.

  136. The genealogy is a long list of names.

  137. It's not just tracing history,

  138. although it is history.

  139. It's tracing promise.

  140. We now know,

  141. Genesis 3 verse 15,

    Genesis 3:15

  142. God has promised us that a sin-defeating,

  143. curse-destroying,

  144. snake-crushing Messiah

  145. is going to come.

  146. God promised us this in Genesis 3 verse 15.

    Genesis 3:15

  147. There is hope now that things won't always be this way.

  148. What's been broken will one day be restored.

  149. There's hope that on this side of the fall,

  150. things are going to get better,

  151. even if at the moment it looks impossible.

  152. God's promised it.

  153. And what we've seen is that this promised offspring

  154. will come through the line of Seth,

  155. which is why, if we look here again in chapter 5,

  156. we're going backwards all the way to Adam,

  157. and then he goes from Adam,

  158. not to Cain,

  159. and not to Abel,

  160. but from Adam to Seth.

  161. He's tracing this line of promise

  162. now through the line of Seth.

  163. And from Seth on down the line,

  164. ultimately now to Noah.

  165. And did you notice just the tone of Lamech

  166. as he talked about his son Noah?

  167. Did you hear what he said?

  168. Look at his words there in verse 29 of chapter 5.

  169. He said,

  170. This one will bring us relief.

  171. This one will bring us rest from our painful toil,

  172. relief from the thorns and thistles

  173. that have come because of sin.

  174. He's longing for the rest and the relief

  175. that ultimately only the promised seed of the woman

  176. is going to come and to give.

  177. So, the line is tracing promise.

  178. Another observation here,

  179. number two,

  180. notice the presence of death.

  181. Notice the reign of death

  182. over all that are born from Adam.

  183. Hope deferred makes the heart sick.

  184. Every offspring of the woman

  185. here in the line of Adam,

  186. here in the line of Seth,

  187. came with this expectation

  188. that maybe this will be the one,

  189. but tragically what we see

  190. is death reigns over all of them.

  191. It's interesting, you know,

  192. as we read this,

  193. you know what stands out to us?

  194. It's those long spans of life, isn't it?

  195. And that's what stands out most to us.

  196. We got 930 years of life.

  197. These guys are waiting

  198. until they're like 500 years

  199. before they get married and have kids.

  200. 930 years, 807 years, 912 years.

  201. That's what stands out to us,

  202. but we should remember where we are.

  203. We are inches away from the Garden of Eden.

  204. We are just steps away from the tree of life

  205. and this promise of eternal life.

  206. Death is the stranger here.

  207. Death is the disruption here.

  208. Death is not normal.

  209. Death is not a normal part of life.

  210. Death is a enemy.

  211. And yet we see it reigning here over all.

  212. All that is except for one.

  213. So third observation here,

  214. we notice the presence of hope.

  215. Verse 24, chapter 5.

  216. The strange story of Enoch.

  217. Enoch walked with God

  218. and he was not.

  219. For God took him.

  220. We have this constant refrain.

  221. Generation after generation after generation.

  222. He was born.

  223. He fathered children.

  224. And he died.

  225. And he died.

  226. And he died.

  227. And he died.

  228. And now Enoch,

  229. he was not.

  230. For God took him.

  231. Now again,

  232. I don't know exactly what this looked like,

  233. but all I can say is this.

  234. Enoch here gives us hope

  235. that even on this side of the fall,

  236. it is possible,

  237. by the grace of God,

  238. for sinners like you and me,

  239. by the grace of God,

  240. to walk with the Lord

  241. and escape the curse of sin and death.

  242. There is hope here

  243. with the story of Enoch.

  244. But of course,

  245. what we see here is that

  246. Enoch is the exception.

  247. Sin and death are reigning over all humanity.

  248. And as we look now to chapter 6,

  249. we get to see just how big of a problem this is

  250. and exactly what God is going to do about it.

  251. So look there with me to chapter 6.

  252. And I have three questions here

  253. about chapter 6, verses 1 through 8.

  254. And as you read these verses,

  255. you probably have a lot more questions than that.

  256. All right,

  257. but I got three for us

  258. and I'll do my best.

  259. So we see the effect of sin here in chapter 5.

  260. But now we're getting kind of a zoomed in picture,

  261. an in-depth look at exactly what's going on here.

  262. And I'll just go ahead and tell you,

  263. all right,

  264. this is my disclaimer to you.

  265. These verses are hard, okay?

  266. And these are some verses

  267. that Christians sometimes back and forth

  268. and they don't always agree

  269. on the particulars of what's going on.

  270. We agree big picture, right?

  271. Sin is bad.

  272. God is good.

  273. God is going to judge sin.

  274. We agree big picture.

  275. But as we dive in,

  276. in the particulars of interpretation here,

  277. there are different camps, okay?

  278. So let's read it again

  279. and then I'm going to give you my best shot, all right?

  280. Look there again to chapter 6, verse 1.

  281. And I want to ask this question.

  282. What's the problem?

  283. Question number one is,

  284. what's the big issue here?

  285. What's going on?

  286. What's the big problem?

  287. When man began to multiply on the face of the land

  288. and daughters were born to them,

  289. the sons of God saw that the daughters of man

  290. were attractive

  291. and they took as their wives any they chose.

  292. Then the Lord said,

  293. My spirit shall not abide in man forever,

  294. for he is flesh.

  295. His days shall be 120 years.

  296. And the Nephilim were on the earth in those days

  297. and also afterward

  298. when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man

  299. and they bore children to them.

  300. These were the mighty men who were of old,

  301. the men of renown.

  302. The problem, we can agree clearly,

  303. is that the sons of God married the daughters of man.

  304. What's not so immediately clear is who these two groups of people are.

  305. Who are the sons of God and who are the daughters of man

  306. and why is this a problem?

  307. So I'll tell you one popular way to understand this,

  308. one popular interpretation,

  309. and then I'll tell you why I don't think that this is the best way to understand it.

  310. Okay?

  311. The one popular belief

  312. is that the sons of God

  313. are fallen angels

  314. and the daughters of man

  315. are human women.

  316. And so in this view,

  317. in this interpretation,

  318. these fallen angels,

  319. they see that the human daughters are attractive,

  320. they marry them,

  321. and then the product of that relationship,

  322. verse 4,

  323. is the Nephilim,

  324. which in this view is this hybrid race

  325. of like half angel,

  326. half human,

  327. giant warrior people.

  328. Okay?

  329. That's one interpretation.

  330. And so verse 3,

  331. in response to this,

  332. God saw this as wicked

  333. and he brings judgment on the earth for this sin.

  334. Now again,

  335. just so I'm clear,

  336. there are many who hold this view.

  337. Many who are much smarter than me.

  338. Okay?

  339. And that's not saying much,

  340. but many who are more intelligent than me

  341. hold this view.

  342. People I respect,

  343. people that have studied into this

  344. probably deeper and harder than I have.

  345. If you hold this view,

  346. we can still be members of the same church,

  347. that we can still be friends,

  348. we can still get along.

  349. Okay?

  350. But let me tell you why I don't think

  351. this is the best way to understand it.

  352. For one,

  353. Jesus tells us angels don't get married.

  354. Matthew 22,

    Matthew 22:30

  355. verse 30,

  356. Jesus tells us that

  357. in the resurrection,

  358. people are like angels.

  359. How are they like angels,

  360. Jesus?

  361. They are like angels

  362. in the sense that

  363. they don't marry

  364. or are given in marriage.

  365. That's one.

  366. Another reason.

  367. Verse 4

  368. clearly tells us

  369. that the Nephilim,

  370. whoever they are,

  371. whatever they are,

  372. they are not the result

  373. of this relationship.

  374. Read it again.

  375. Verse 4.

  376. He tells us the Nephilim

  377. were on the earth

  378. in those days.

  379. What days?

  380. in the days

  381. when all of this happened.

  382. When the sons of God

  383. bore children

  384. with the daughters of man

  385. and also afterward.

  386. So the Nephilim,

  387. are you tracking with me?

  388. The Nephilim can't be

  389. the result of this relationship

  390. because he tells us

  391. they're already there.

  392. Both before and after.

  393. They're these mighty warrior men,

  394. this warrior race

  395. of violent people

  396. that the Israelites

  397. would have been well familiar with.

  398. One more objection here.

  399. And to me,

  400. this is the biggest issue

  401. for me here.

  402. If this is the problem,

  403. if the problem is

  404. that angels are coming down

  405. and marrying human wives,

  406. then why is God's judgment

  407. not directed towards the angels?

  408. We know what's coming,

  409. don't we?

  410. We know what's coming next.

  411. Everything that follows

  412. is that God is going to wipe away

  413. the entire population

  414. of the earth.

  415. All mankind

  416. will be destroyed

  417. with a flood

  418. of God's judgment

  419. with the exception

  420. of Noah and his family.

  421. Clearly,

  422. this judgment

  423. isn't directed

  424. towards angels

  425. and their wickedness.

  426. It is directed

  427. against humans

  428. and our wickedness.

  429. Why?

  430. Because,

  431. verse 5,

  432. the Lord saw

  433. that the wickedness

  434. of man

  435. was great in the earth

  436. and that every intention

  437. of the thoughts

  438. of his heart

  439. was only evil.

  440. Continually,

  441. we'll come back to that.

  442. So,

  443. if that's not

  444. what's happening here,

  445. then what's the problem?

  446. What's going on here?

  447. And this is,

  448. again,

  449. this is why context

  450. is so important.

  451. Church.

  452. The Bible

  453. is not just

  454. a bunch of loosely

  455. connected,

  456. mishmash,

  457. just assembly

  458. of random stories.

  459. The Bible

  460. is not like

  461. a greatest hits album

  462. that's just composed

  463. of singles

  464. and put together

  465. in one CD here.

  466. The book

  467. holds together.

  468. And if you ever

  469. wonder what a passage

  470. means,

  471. what a difficult passage

  472. means,

  473. question number one

  474. for you ought to be,

  475. well,

  476. what would context

  477. lead me to believe?

  478. The problem

  479. in my understanding here,

  480. the problem

  481. is that the one

  482. supposedly

  483. godly line,

  484. the line of Seth,

  485. the line of promise

  486. that was supposed

  487. to be a glimmer of hope

  488. in the midst

  489. of a dark

  490. and fallen world,

  491. this line of promise

  492. is now intermarrying

  493. with non-believers.

  494. They are proving

  495. themselves

  496. to be just like

  497. everyone else.

  498. In my understanding,

  499. the sons of God

  500. here aren't fallen angels,

  501. the sons of God

  502. who,

  503. as we saw last time

  504. from chapter 4,

  505. these are those

  506. who began to call

  507. upon the name

  508. of the Lord.

  509. The sons of God

  510. are the chosen

  511. line of Seth.

  512. They are the faithful,

  513. at least they're

  514. supposed to be.

  515. And the daughters

  516. of man

  517. are those who are

  518. faithless,

  519. the ungodly,

  520. and the wicked.

  521. The problem here

  522. is that there is

  523. no distinction

  524. between the righteous

  525. and the wicked.

  526. They've all become wicked.

  527. All of them

  528. are polluted

  529. with sin.

  530. Now you see

  531. how this is a big problem.

  532. I mean,

  533. just think about

  534. going forward

  535. throughout the rest

  536. of Scripture,

  537. how the Lord

  538. makes it abundantly clear

  539. there must be

  540. a distinction

  541. between the righteous

  542. and the wicked.

  543. Between my people

  544. and between

  545. all the rest.

  546. He says,

  547. purge the evil

  548. from among you,

  549. he says in Deuteronomy.

  550. As we go to

  551. the New Testament,

  552. 2 Corinthians,

  553. Paul tells us,

  554. do not be

  555. unequally yoked

  556. with unbelievers.

  557. A Christian

  558. ought not

  559. marry

  560. a non-Christian,

  561. Paul says.

  562. Why not?

  563. He says,

  564. for what partnership

  565. has righteousness

  566. with lawlessness?

  567. These things

  568. don't go together.

  569. What fellowship

  570. has light

  571. with darkness?

  572. There's a difference.

  573. There's a distinction.

  574. What accord

  575. has Christ

  576. with Belial?

  577. What portion

  578. does a believer

  579. share with an unbeliever?

  580. What agreement

  581. has the temple

  582. of God

  583. with idols?

  584. For we,

  585. church,

  586. are the temple

  587. of the living God.

  588. As God said,

  589. I will make

  590. my dwelling

  591. among them

  592. and walk

  593. among them

  594. and I will be

  595. their God

  596. and they shall

  597. be my people.

  598. Therefore,

  599. go out

  600. from their midst

  601. and be separate

  602. from them,

  603. says the Lord,

  604. and touch

  605. no unclean

  606. thing.

  607. Then I will

  608. welcome you

  609. and I will be

  610. a father to you

  611. and you shall be

  612. sons and daughters

  613. to me,

  614. says the Lord

  615. God Almighty.

  616. Do you hear

  617. the distinction

  618. the Lord's making?

  619. There is to be

  620. a dividing line,

  621. a clear

  622. and obvious

  623. distinction

  624. between the

  625. righteous

  626. and the

  627. wicked.

  628. In fact,

  629. this is what

  630. was happening

  631. here in the

  632. local church.

  633. This is what

  634. church membership

  635. does.

  636. It's an affirmation

  637. that you belong

  638. to the Lord.

  639. You are marked

  640. off from the

  641. unbelieving world.

  642. The church

  643. are those who

  644. have been brought

  645. out of darkness

  646. and into his

  647. marvelous light

  648. through faith

  649. in the Messiah.

  650. God.

  651. The problem

  652. here, I believe,

  653. is that this

  654. faithful, this

  655. line of promise

  656. is now intermarrying

  657. with non-believers.

  658. They are not

  659. marrying within

  660. the believing

  661. community, those

  662. who call upon

  663. the name of the

  664. Lord.

  665. They are going

  666. outside of those

  667. who worship

  668. Yahweh and

  669. picking for

  670. themselves wives,

  671. whatever wives

  672. that they want.

  673. They aren't

  674. seeking mates

  675. primarily based

  676. on spiritual

  677. priorities, but

  678. rather based

  679. on external

  680. appearance.

  681. And you

  682. recognize this

  683. is the same

  684. sin of the

  685. garden repeated,

  686. isn't it?

  687. Just as Eve

  688. saw that the

  689. fruit was to be

  690. desired, saw

  691. that it was

  692. good and she

  693. took it, so

  694. now the sons

  695. of God see

  696. the forbidden

  697. women, they

  698. see that they

  699. look good and

  700. they take for

  701. themselves wives

  702. as they choose.

  703. You see the

  704. issue.

  705. all are

  706. wicked.

  707. All are

  708. ruled by

  709. sin.

  710. There is no

  711. distinction

  712. whatsoever.

  713. So now

  714. question number

  715. two.

  716. What is the

  717. Lord's response?

  718. What is the

  719. Lord's response?

  720. Look there with

  721. me to verse

  722. five, chapter

  723. six.

  724. The Lord saw

  725. that the

  726. wickedness of

  727. man was great

  728. in the earth

  729. and that

  730. every intention

  731. of the thoughts

  732. of his heart

  733. was only evil

  734. continually.

  735. Can we just

  736. stop there?

  737. Let us let that

  738. sink in.

  739. How bad has it

  740. gotten?

  741. Every intention

  742. of every thought,

  743. of every heart,

  744. of every man

  745. is only evil

  746. all the time.

  747. That's the problem.

  748. the problem

  749. here is that

  750. all men

  751. and women

  752. and children

  753. have within

  754. them this

  755. dreadful

  756. sickness

  757. of sin.

  758. And friend,

  759. apart from the

  760. grace of God,

  761. that is our

  762. problem.

  763. the second

  764. London

  765. Baptist

  766. confession

  767. says it like

  768. this,

  769. says our

  770. first parents,

  771. Adam and Eve,

  772. by this sin

  773. fell from their

  774. original righteousness

  775. and communion

  776. with God

  777. and we

  778. in them,

  779. we

  780. in

  781. them,

  782. whereby

  783. death came

  784. upon

  785. all.

  786. You want to

  787. know why we

  788. die?

  789. This is why.

  790. All becoming

  791. dead in

  792. sin,

  793. not just

  794. physical death,

  795. spiritual death,

  796. and wholly

  797. defiled in

  798. all the

  799. faculties and

  800. parts of

  801. soul and

  802. body.

  803. Every intention

  804. of every

  805. thought,

  806. of every

  807. heart,

  808. of every

  809. man,

  810. only evil

  811. all the

  812. time.

  813. Our own

  814. statement of

  815. faith says

  816. something similar,

  817. says this,

  818. here's what we

  819. confess to

  820. believe,

  821. as a result

  822. of the

  823. disobedience

  824. of our

  825. first parents,

  826. Adam and

  827. Eve,

  828. all humanity

  829. are now

  830. sinners,

  831. not by

  832. constraint,

  833. but by

  834. choice,

  835. being by

  836. nature,

  837. utterly

  838. devoid of

  839. the holiness

  840. required by

  841. God,

  842. and completely

  843. inclined to

  844. evil.

  845. Every

  846. intention,

  847. of every

  848. heart,

  849. of every

  850. man,

  851. is only

  852. evil all

  853. the time.

  854. Do you

  855. see that

  856. for what

  857. it is?

  858. Do you

  859. believe that

  860. to be true

  861. about you,

  862. apart from

  863. the grace

  864. of God?

  865. Do you

  866. believe that

  867. to be

  868. true about

  869. you naturally,

  870. by nature

  871. and by

  872. choice,

  873. apart from

  874. God's

  875. grace?

  876. This isn't

  877. just a

  878. them

  879. problem,

  880. this is

  881. us,

  882. apart from

  883. the grace

  884. of God,

  885. by nature.

  886. Every

  887. intention,

  888. of every

  889. thought,

  890. of your

  891. heart,

  892. and my

  893. heart,

  894. is only

  895. evil all

  896. the time,

  897. apart from

  898. the grace

  899. of God.

  900. Do you

  901. believe

  902. that?

  903. sin is

  904. not like

  905. what Thomas

  906. Aquinas

  907. and the

  908. Catholics

  909. said.

  910. They said

  911. that sin

  912. just wounds

  913. us.

  914. It's a

  915. wound,

  916. a wound

  917. that can

  918. be patched

  919. up and

  920. covered up

  921. and cleaned

  922. up.

  923. It's a

  924. wound that

  925. can be

  926. bandaged.

  927. We prefer

  928. to think

  929. about it

  930. like that,

  931. don't we?

  932. Because we

  933. want something

  934. that we

  935. can just

  936. improve

  937. upon and

  938. make better

  939. and just

  940. dust off

  941. and try

  942. harder tomorrow

  943. and everything

  944. will be

  945. okay.

  946. The

  947. biblical

  948. understanding

  949. of sin

  950. is not

  951. that

  952. optimistic.

  953. The

  954. Bible

  955. tells us

  956. sin has

  957. not just

  958. wounded

  959. us,

  960. sin has

  961. killed

  962. us.

  963. By

  964. nature,

  965. we are

  966. dead

  967. in our

  968. trespasses

  969. and sins.

  970. We are

  971. not just

  972. in need

  973. of a

  974. bandage.

  975. We need

  976. to be

  977. born

  978. again

  979. by the

  980. grace

  981. of

  982. God.

  983. We have

  984. to understand

  985. the depth

  986. of this

  987. condition

  988. that runs

  989. through each

  990. and every

  991. one of us

  992. because apart

  993. from this,

  994. we will

  995. never

  996. understand

  997. the Lord's

  998. response

  999. to our

  1000. sin.

  1001. Look there

  1002. to verse

  1003. six.

  1004. It says,

  1005. the Lord

  1006. regretted

  1007. that he

  1008. had made

  1009. man on

  1010. the earth

  1011. and it

  1012. grieved

  1013. him

  1014. to his

  1015. heart.

  1016. Now,

  1017. you all

  1018. know I

  1019. like to

  1020. be

  1021. theologically

  1022. precise

  1023. and theological

  1024. precision

  1025. requires

  1026. here that

  1027. I say

  1028. something like

  1029. God is

  1030. totally

  1031. sovereign

  1032. and a

  1033. sovereign

  1034. eternal

  1035. God has

  1036. no regrets.

  1037. God is

  1038. infinitely

  1039. satisfied,

  1040. infinitely

  1041. happy.

  1042. He is

  1043. happy

  1044. within

  1045. himself,

  1046. within

  1047. the

  1048. Godhead

  1049. for all

  1050. of

  1051. eternity

  1052. and an

  1053. infinitely

  1054. happy

  1055. God

  1056. feels

  1057. no grief

  1058. like we

  1059. do.

  1060. That's

  1061. correct.

  1062. But don't

  1063. miss the

  1064. point that

  1065. he's making

  1066. here.

  1067. What he's

  1068. doing is

  1069. he's using

  1070. as the

  1071. Bible often

  1072. does in

  1073. an attempt

  1074. to explain

  1075. to finite

  1076. creatures

  1077. with limited

  1078. understanding.

  1079. The Bible

  1080. often

  1081. condescends

  1082. to our

  1083. level of

  1084. understanding

  1085. in order

  1086. to describe

  1087. to us

  1088. an infinite

  1089. and incomprehensible

  1090. God.

  1091. He's using

  1092. human

  1093. experience,

  1094. human

  1095. language

  1096. and human

  1097. emotion

  1098. to communicate

  1099. a truth

  1100. to us

  1101. that we

  1102. don't need

  1103. to miss.

  1104. Our sin

  1105. grieves

  1106. the Lord

  1107. who made

  1108. us.

  1109. God is

  1110. grieved

  1111. by our

  1112. sin.

  1113. He is

  1114. opposed

  1115. to our

  1116. sin.

  1117. He's

  1118. offended

  1119. by our

  1120. sin.

  1121. He sees

  1122. it and

  1123. it grieves

  1124. him.

  1125. He's against

  1126. us in

  1127. our sin.

  1128. Clearly

  1129. this is a

  1130. big problem

  1131. and that

  1132. big problem

  1133. requires a

  1134. big solution.

  1135. So here

  1136. the Lord

  1137. says,

  1138. I will

  1139. blot

  1140. out man

  1141. whom I

  1142. have

  1143. created

  1144. from the

  1145. face of

  1146. the land.

  1147. Man

  1148. and animals

  1149. and creeping

  1150. things and

  1151. birds of the

  1152. heavens for

  1153. I am

  1154. sorry

  1155. that I

  1156. have

  1157. made

  1158. them.

  1159. Verse

  1160. 3,

  1161. My spirit

  1162. shall not

  1163. abide in

  1164. man forever

  1165. for he

  1166. is flesh.

  1167. His days

  1168. shall be

  1169. 120 years.

  1170. In other

  1171. words,

  1172. the time

  1173. is set.

  1174. Problem

  1175. won't go

  1176. on forever.

  1177. The Lord

  1178. has set

  1179. a day.

  1180. The Lord

  1181. has set

  1182. a time.

  1183. The rebellion

  1184. will not

  1185. last forever.

  1186. The sin

  1187. will not

  1188. endure

  1189. forever.

  1190. God

  1191. will address

  1192. it in

  1193. 120

  1194. years.

  1195. The clock

  1196. goes off

  1197. and judgment

  1198. will come

  1199. upon the

  1200. world.

  1201. By a

  1202. flood of

  1203. judgment,

  1204. he will

  1205. wipe

  1206. mankind

  1207. from the

  1208. face of

  1209. the planet.

  1210. I wonder,

  1211. does that

  1212. sound severe

  1213. to you?

  1214. In the

  1215. coming weeks,

  1216. Lord willing,

  1217. we'll get a

  1218. sense of just

  1219. how devastating

  1220. this was,

  1221. this worldwide

  1222. flood.

  1223. All but

  1224. eight people.

  1225. But you

  1226. can imagine

  1227. it now.

  1228. The whole

  1229. world.

  1230. This is an

  1231. undoing of

  1232. creation.

  1233. He is just

  1234. wiping the

  1235. slate clean.

  1236. He told

  1237. them that

  1238. the day

  1239. they ate

  1240. of the

  1241. fruit of

  1242. the tree,

  1243. they would

  1244. surely die.

  1245. And now,

  1246. he says,

  1247. within 120

  1248. years,

  1249. that bill

  1250. is going

  1251. to come

  1252. due.

  1253. Whatever

  1254. your sense

  1255. of how

  1256. devastating

  1257. and terrible

  1258. that was,

  1259. know two

  1260. things.

  1261. For one,

  1262. that judgment

  1263. was 100%

  1264. just.

  1265. Our sin

  1266. deserves

  1267. judgment.

  1268. And two,

  1269. this flood,

  1270. as horrible,

  1271. as devastating

  1272. as it was,

  1273. is just a

  1274. small,

  1275. small picture

  1276. of a greater

  1277. judgment to

  1278. come at the

  1279. return of the

  1280. Lord Jesus

  1281. Christ.

  1282. Let me read

  1283. to you this

  1284. passage from

  1285. 2 Peter.

  1286. We read part

  1287. of it this

  1288. morning already.

  1289. He's referencing

  1290. the flood.

  1291. He says this,

  1292. scoffers will

  1293. come in the

  1294. last days

  1295. with scoffing,

  1296. following their

  1297. own sinful

  1298. desires.

  1299. And they

  1300. will say,

  1301. where is the

  1302. promise of

  1303. his coming?

  1304. Where is

  1305. Jesus?

  1306. You said

  1307. Jesus was

  1308. coming back.

  1309. Where is

  1310. he?

  1311. For ever

  1312. since the

  1313. fathers fell

  1314. asleep,

  1315. all things

  1316. are continuing

  1317. as they were

  1318. from the

  1319. beginning of

  1320. creation.

  1321. They deliberately

  1322. overlook this

  1323. fact that the

  1324. heavens existed

  1325. long ago,

  1326. and the

  1327. earth was

  1328. formed out

  1329. of water

  1330. and through

  1331. water by

  1332. the word

  1333. of God,

  1334. and that by

  1335. means of

  1336. these the

  1337. world that

  1338. then existed

  1339. was deluged

  1340. with water

  1341. and perished.

  1342. Listen to

  1343. this.

  1344. But by the

  1345. same word,

  1346. the heavens

  1347. and earth

  1348. that now

  1349. exist are

  1350. stored up

  1351. for fire,

  1352. being kept

  1353. until the

  1354. day of

  1355. judgment and

  1356. destruction of

  1357. the ungodly.

  1358. In other

  1359. words,

  1360. there is a

  1361. greater day

  1362. of judgment

  1363. yet to

  1364. come.

  1365. There is a

  1366. more horrible

  1367. moment of

  1368. God's wrath

  1369. yet to

  1370. come.

  1371. There is a

  1372. greater

  1373. destruction of

  1374. the ungodly

  1375. and the

  1376. wicked yet

  1377. to come.

  1378. When we

  1379. look back

  1380. at this

  1381. and we're

  1382. in horror

  1383. of a

  1384. global flood

  1385. that wipes

  1386. out all

  1387. but eight,

  1388. we ought to

  1389. look forward

  1390. to this day

  1391. of God's

  1392. wrath and

  1393. tremble.

  1394. There's a

  1395. day of

  1396. judgment

  1397. yet to

  1398. come.

  1399. we should

  1400. look at

  1401. this wickedness

  1402. and realize

  1403. by nature

  1404. this is

  1405. our

  1406. wickedness.

  1407. Every

  1408. intention

  1409. of every

  1410. thought,

  1411. of every

  1412. heart,

  1413. of every

  1414. man,

  1415. always evil

  1416. all the

  1417. time.

  1418. That is

  1419. us.

  1420. We should

  1421. look at

  1422. God's

  1423. posture

  1424. towards

  1425. this sin,

  1426. towards our

  1427. sin and

  1428. realize by

  1429. nature,

  1430. God is

  1431. opposed to

  1432. us.

  1433. We should

  1434. look at

  1435. this promise

  1436. of coming

  1437. judgment and

  1438. realize there

  1439. is a

  1440. greater judgment

  1441. yet to

  1442. come.

  1443. And if

  1444. we are

  1445. wicked,

  1446. friend,

  1447. it is

  1448. coming for

  1449. us.

  1450. This

  1451. problem is

  1452. our problem.

  1453. And if

  1454. that is

  1455. true,

  1456. then we

  1457. have to

  1458. ask,

  1459. is there

  1460. any hope

  1461. at all

  1462. for the

  1463. wicked?

  1464. Is there

  1465. any hope

  1466. at all

  1467. for sinners

  1468. like us?

  1469. All of

  1470. us have

  1471. sinned and

  1472. fallen short

  1473. of the

  1474. glory of

  1475. God.

  1476. Every

  1477. single one

  1478. of us

  1479. is guilty.

  1480. Is there

  1481. any hope

  1482. at all

  1483. for a

  1484. sinner?

  1485. And we

  1486. know,

  1487. those who

  1488. know the

  1489. gospel say,

  1490. praise God,

  1491. the answer

  1492. is a

  1493. resounding

  1494. yes.

  1495. So question

  1496. number three,

  1497. what is

  1498. our hope?

  1499. Friend,

  1500. our only

  1501. hope is

  1502. the grace

  1503. of God

  1504. towards

  1505. sinners

  1506. like us.

  1507. The only

  1508. hope for

  1509. a sinner

  1510. like me

  1511. is that

  1512. God would

  1513. be gracious

  1514. to me,

  1515. a sinner.

  1516. That God

  1517. would show

  1518. mercy to

  1519. me.

  1520. In the

  1521. midst here

  1522. of this

  1523. universal

  1524. wickedness

  1525. and coming

  1526. judgment,

  1527. there is a

  1528. single ray

  1529. of hope

  1530. here in

  1531. verse 8.

  1532. Look there

  1533. with me.

  1534. You see

  1535. what it

  1536. says?

  1537. Judgment

  1538. is coming,

  1539. but Noah

  1540. found favor

  1541. in the eyes

  1542. of the

  1543. Lord.

  1544. just like

  1545. Enoch,

  1546. Noah

  1547. here gives

  1548. us hope

  1549. that even

  1550. on this

  1551. side of

  1552. the fall,

  1553. even here

  1554. outside of

  1555. the garden,

  1556. even here

  1557. with sin

  1558. running rampant

  1559. through us

  1560. and everybody

  1561. else,

  1562. there is

  1563. the possibility

  1564. that God

  1565. might show

  1566. favor to

  1567. sinners like

  1568. me.

  1569. We'll see

  1570. soon enough

  1571. that Noah

  1572. is a sinner

  1573. too.

  1574. Noah has

  1575. the same

  1576. problem

  1577. that we

  1578. do.

  1579. He has

  1580. the same

  1581. sin running

  1582. through his

  1583. veins that

  1584. we do.

  1585. He is

  1586. just as

  1587. deserving

  1588. of the

  1589. wrath of

  1590. God as

  1591. I am

  1592. and everybody

  1593. else,

  1594. but Noah

  1595. by the

  1596. mercy and

  1597. the grace

  1598. of God,

  1599. a sinner

  1600. found favor

  1601. in the eyes

  1602. of the

  1603. Lord.

  1604. God.

  1605. This is

  1606. the glorious

  1607. grace of

  1608. God on

  1609. display and

  1610. this is our

  1611. only hope.

  1612. This but

  1613. Noah, it

  1614. can be phrased

  1615. in a different

  1616. way and I

  1617. want you to

  1618. think about it

  1619. like this because

  1620. the emphasis

  1621. isn't so much

  1622. on Noah.

  1623. The point is

  1624. the astounding

  1625. grace of God

  1626. toward a sinner

  1627. like Noah.

  1628. Read it like

  1629. this and you

  1630. tell me if it

  1631. sounds familiar

  1632. to you.

  1633. Noah was

  1634. as good as

  1635. dead because

  1636. of sin,

  1637. but God

  1638. showed favor

  1639. to Noah.

  1640. Noah is a

  1641. sinner deserving

  1642. judgment,

  1643. but God

  1644. showed him

  1645. unmerited,

  1646. undeserved

  1647. favor.

  1648. Noah had

  1649. earned himself

  1650. death, he

  1651. was guilty,

  1652. but God

  1653. gave him

  1654. life.

  1655. If you're a

  1656. Christian, that

  1657. ought to sound

  1658. real familiar

  1659. to you because

  1660. that's your

  1661. story.

  1662. Your story,

  1663. Christian.

  1664. is what we

  1665. sang just a

  1666. few moments

  1667. ago.

  1668. I once was

  1669. lost in

  1670. darkest night.

  1671. I thought I

  1672. knew the way,

  1673. the sin that

  1674. promised joy

  1675. and life led

  1676. me to the

  1677. grave.

  1678. I had no

  1679. hope that you

  1680. would own a

  1681. rebel to your

  1682. will and if you

  1683. had not loved

  1684. me first, I

  1685. would refuse you

  1686. still.

  1687. But as I ran

  1688. my hellbound

  1689. race, indifferent

  1690. to the cost,

  1691. you looked upon

  1692. my helpless

  1693. state and

  1694. you led me

  1695. to the cross.

  1696. You did it.

  1697. And I beheld

  1698. God's love

  1699. displayed.

  1700. You suffered

  1701. in my place.

  1702. You bore the

  1703. wrath reserved

  1704. for me.

  1705. Now all I

  1706. know is

  1707. grace.

  1708. Hallelujah.

  1709. All I have

  1710. is Christ.

  1711. Hallelujah.

  1712. What's the

  1713. response?

  1714. Hallelujah.

  1715. Hallelujah.

  1716. Jesus is my

  1717. life.

  1718. That is the

  1719. anthem of the

  1720. Christian soul.

  1721. I was dead.

  1722. I deserve

  1723. judgment.

  1724. I'm guilty.

  1725. I am wicked

  1726. to the core.

  1727. But God

  1728. has been

  1729. gracious and

  1730. has shown

  1731. mercy to me

  1732. a sinner.

  1733. Paul says

  1734. something similar

  1735. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1736. chapter 2.

  1737. You were dead

  1738. not wounded.

  1739. Dead in the

  1740. trespasses and

  1741. sins in which

  1742. you once

  1743. walked.

  1744. Not sick.

  1745. Not wounded.

  1746. Not hurt.

  1747. Not able to

  1748. brush yourself

  1749. off.

  1750. Not in need

  1751. of a band-aid.

  1752. Not able to

  1753. turn over a

  1754. new leaf.

  1755. You were

  1756. dead.

  1757. Following the

  1758. course of this

  1759. world.

  1760. Following the

  1761. prince of the

  1762. power of the

  1763. air.

  1764. The spirit

  1765. that is now

  1766. at work in

  1767. the sons of

  1768. disobedience.

  1769. Among whom

  1770. we all once

  1771. lived in the

  1772. passions of

  1773. our flesh.

  1774. Carrying out

  1775. the desires of

  1776. the body and

  1777. the mind and

  1778. were by nature

  1779. children of

  1780. wrath like the

  1781. rest of

  1782. mankind.

  1783. But God

  1784. being rich in

  1785. mercy because

  1786. of the great

  1787. love with which

  1788. he loved us

  1789. even when we

  1790. were dead in

  1791. our trespasses

  1792. made us alive

  1793. together with

  1794. Christ.

  1795. By grace you

  1796. have been

  1797. saved.

  1798. Raised us

  1799. up with

  1800. him and

  1801. seated us

  1802. with him in

  1803. the heavenly

  1804. places in

  1805. Christ Jesus

  1806. so that in

  1807. the coming

  1808. ages he

  1809. might show

  1810. the immeasurable

  1811. riches of

  1812. his grace in

  1813. kindness toward

  1814. us in

  1815. Christ Jesus.

  1816. Is that your

  1817. story friend?

  1818. Do you see

  1819. here your

  1820. wickedness?

  1821. Do you see

  1822. here your

  1823. sin and

  1824. your depravity?

  1825. Do you see

  1826. your guilt and

  1827. God's response

  1828. to your sin?

  1829. Do you see it?

  1830. Do you see

  1831. your need for

  1832. grace?

  1833. If so

  1834. call out to

  1835. the Lord and

  1836. ask him

  1837. Lord would you

  1838. would you show

  1839. mercy on a

  1840. sinner like me?

  1841. Would you be

  1842. gracious to a

  1843. sinner like me?

  1844. Would you

  1845. would you lead

  1846. me to trust in

  1847. the only provision

  1848. for my sin which

  1849. is the Savior

  1850. Jesus Christ?

  1851. Big problems

  1852. require big

  1853. solutions.

  1854. God's

  1855. solution for

  1856. the problem of

  1857. sin ultimately

  1858. as we'll see

  1859. over the next

  1860. several weeks is

  1861. not a flood.

  1862. This flood

  1863. as terrible as

  1864. it is is a

  1865. band-aid on

  1866. the bullet hole

  1867. of our sin.

  1868. The problem of

  1869. sin it needs a

  1870. much bigger

  1871. solution than

  1872. that to crush

  1873. the head of

  1874. the serpent.

  1875. God will

  1876. crush his own

  1877. son in our

  1878. place.

  1879. To peel back

  1880. the curse of

  1881. sin Christ

  1882. Jesus himself

  1883. will become a

  1884. curse for us.

  1885. On the cross

  1886. for our sake

  1887. for sinners

  1888. sake he made

  1889. him who knew

  1890. no sin to

  1891. become sin for

  1892. us so that in

  1893. him by faith

  1894. in him sinners

  1895. like us might

  1896. become the

  1897. righteousness of

  1898. God.

  1899. God's

  1900. solution for

  1901. the problem of

  1902. sin is the

  1903. gospel of Jesus

  1904. Christ.

  1905. The perfect

  1906. life, the

  1907. sacrificial death,

  1908. the victorious

  1909. resurrection of

  1910. the promised seed

  1911. of the woman so

  1912. that by grace

  1913. undeserving sinners

  1914. like us by

  1915. faith in him

  1916. can now walk

  1917. with God and

  1918. escape the curse

  1919. of sin and

  1920. death.

  1921. Amen.

  1922. Father we

  1923. praise you for

  1924. the gospel.

  1925. There's no hope

  1926. for sinners like

  1927. us apart from

  1928. your grace.

  1929. There's no hope

  1930. for us apart

  1931. from the

  1932. sacrifice, from

  1933. the life, from

  1934. the resurrection

  1935. of Jesus.

  1936. So we thank you

  1937. and we praise you

  1938. Lord for this

  1939. fulfilled promise,

  1940. the seed of the

  1941. woman who has

  1942. conquered sin and

  1943. conquered the

  1944. grave and

  1945. defeated our

  1946. enemy.

  1947. And we pray

  1948. Lord if there

  1949. are any who

  1950. don't know you

  1951. Lord who are

  1952. still wicked in

  1953. your sight God

  1954. would you by

  1955. your grace call

  1956. them to put their

  1957. faith in Christ

  1958. even this moment.

  1959. We pray all

  1960. this in Jesus

  1961. name.

  1962. Amen.

  1963. Amen.
