    1 Corinthians 15:37–58

  22. What is sown is perishable.

  23. What is raised is imperishable.

  24. It is sown in dishonor.

  25. It is raised in glory.

  26. It is sown in weakness.

  27. It is raised in power.

  28. It is sown a natural body.

  29. It is raised a spiritual body.

  30. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

  31. Thus it is written,

  32. The first man Adam became a living being.

  33. The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

  34. But it is not the spiritual that's first, but the natural and then the spiritual.

  35. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust.

  36. The second man is from heaven.

  37. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust.

  38. And as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven.

  39. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust,

  40. we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.

  41. I'll tell you this, brothers.

  42. Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God.

  43. Nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

  44. Behold, I tell you a mystery.

  45. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in a moment.

  46. In the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.

  47. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable.

  48. And we shall be changed.

  49. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable,

  50. and this mortal body must put on immortality.

  51. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality,

  52. then shall come to pass the saying that is written,

  53. Death is swallowed up in victory.

  54. O death, where is your victory?

  55. O death, where is your sting?

  56. The sting.

  57. The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

  58. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  59. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable,

  60. always abounding in the work of the Lord,

  61. knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

  62. The grass withers, and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  63. Father, we praise you for this word, and we pray again,

  64. would you fix our hope on eternity with Christ resurrected in the new heavens and new earth.

  65. We pray in Christ's name.

  66. Amen.

  67. You may be seated.

  68. Well, this is week two of our mini-series on the resurrection.

  69. Last week, Easter Sunday, we saw the glorious truth of Jesus' resurrection from the dead.

  70. And the plan is, this week and Lord willing, next week,

  71. we're going to continue exploring this truth of resurrection

  72. as we look at the implications that Jesus' resurrection has for us.

  73. And so I want to ask the question this morning,

  74. is it possible to be too spiritual?

  75. Is it possible to be too spiritually minded?

  76. You may have heard the quote before.

  77. It's often falsely attributed to C.S. Lewis.

  78. It says, you don't have a soul.

  79. You are a soul.

  80. You have a body.

  81. You don't have a soul.

  82. You are a soul.

  83. That's what you really are.

  84. You're spiritual in nature.

  85. You just have a body.

  86. The soul is what lasts forever, but this body is kind of an accessory to the soul

  87. that eventually will be discarded and done away with.

  88. Apparently, C.S. Lewis never said that, not on record at least.

  89. And to be honest, I'm not sure who originally said that.

  90. But as we look at our passage here this morning,

  91. it may as well have been somebody from the church in Corinth.

  92. Now, apparently, as we saw last week,

  93. the Corinthians are having some issues here in the church.

  94. They're having some very serious practical, moral issues

  95. that Paul addresses in this letter.

  96. They're also having some doctrinal issues here in the church.

  97. Some there in Corinth are trying to remove

  98. a key fundamental piece of Christian doctrine.

  99. You remember what it was?

  100. They could not wrap their minds around the reality

  101. of the resurrection from the dead.

  102. As we saw last time in the first half of the chapter,

  103. Paul confidently argued that if the dead are not raised,

  104. then Christ is not raised.

  105. And if Christ is not raised,

  106. then this whole structure of Christianity

  107. comes crumbling down to the ground.

  108. They had such a hard time wrapping their minds

  109. around a physical future for the people of God.

  110. It seems as if the Corinthians were just so spiritual,

  111. spiritual, so spiritually minded,

  112. so spiritually focused, so spiritually oriented

  113. that they simply could not conceive of a physical future.

  114. The physical body for them was an afterthought

  115. and the resurrection body was an absurdity.

  116. Why in the world would we need or want a new body?

  117. As I thought about this issue there in Corinth this week,

  118. I thought, you know what, that's not just a Corinthian problem, is it?

  119. I'd be willing to argue that many modern Christians

  120. are far too spiritual in their understanding of eternity.

  121. For many Christians, our view of eternity

  122. and what happens after we die,

  123. our hope for the future, ends with heaven.

  124. It ends with us escaping from this world.

  125. It ends with the separation of body and soul.

  126. It ends with us getting rid of these old bodies

  127. and going to be with the Lord.

  128. And praise God, all of that is true for you in Christ, believer.

  129. But here we see, Paul says,

  130. our future hope is even greater than that.

  131. The hope that we have in Christ,

  132. the hope that Christ has purchased for His people

  133. by His resurrection from the dead,

  134. is that we too will be raised up like Him at the last day

  135. with new, glorified, resurrected bodies.

  136. So let's look at this this morning.

  137. I want to look at our text.

  138. I just want to ask five questions here this morning

  139. about the resurrection.

  140. This will be our outline if you're taking notes.

  141. Five questions about the resurrection.

  142. I'm sure you have way more than that,

  143. and so do I.

  144. But here's five.

  145. First, what does the Bible say about our hope?

  146. What does the Bible say about our hope?

  147. Does this really match up with what the Bible says?

  148. And if so, does our hope match up with what the Bible says?

  149. Well, I want to go to just a few other places

  150. outside of our passage here very quickly

  151. and show this to you.

  152. One place I think of is John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  153. The resurrection of Lazarus from the dead.

  154. You remember the story?

  155. The Lazarus has died.

  156. Jesus is not there.

  157. That's intentional.

  158. And by the time He does show up,

  159. Mary and Martha are there, and they're upset.

  160. You remember what they said?

  161. Lord, if you had been here,

  162. none of this would have happened.

  163. And they're feeling, they're encountering the grief

  164. and the weight of losing their brother.

  165. And how does Jesus comfort them?

  166. Do you remember what He said?

  167. If it were you and I, we might have said something like,

  168. well, Martha, Lazarus is in heaven.

  169. He believed in Jesus.

  170. He trusts the promises of God.

  171. Lazarus has died, and now he's in heaven.

  172. That would be the comfort that we would give them, right?

  173. And when I preach at a Christian funeral,

  174. often the comfort that we give is that

  175. this departed beloved friend is now with the Lord.

  176. But that's not what Jesus says.

  177. What did He say?

  178. Your brother will rise again.

  179. Now, of course, Martha didn't know that he meant

  180. in like five seconds he's about to rise again, right?

  181. But even so, her comfort in the face of death

  182. was not heaven, it was resurrection.

  183. Your brother will rise again.

  184. Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  185. Paul says to the Philippians,

  186. our citizenship is in heaven.

  187. And if we were to finish the sentence,

  188. we might say something like,

  189. our citizenship is in heaven,

  190. and one day when we die, we get to go there.

  191. What does he say?

  192. Our citizenship is in heaven,

  193. and from it we await a Savior,

  194. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  195. who will transform our lowly body

  196. to be like His glorious body

  197. by the power that enables Him

  198. to subject all things to Himself.

  199. In other words, church,

  200. we're not ultimately waiting to go there

  201. without the body.

  202. Ultimately, we're waiting for Christ

  203. to come back here

  204. and transform everything,

  205. including our bodies.

  206. That's what we have to look forward to.

  207. But one more place,

  208. 1 Thessalonians chapter 4.

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  209. Again, we're dealing with death here

  210. in 1 Thessalonians.

  211. The Thessalonians are worried

  212. about their dead friends,

  213. their dead brothers and sisters in Christ.

  214. And so Paul says in chapter 4, verse 13,

  215. we don't want you to be uninformed, brothers,

  216. about those who are asleep, dead,

  217. that you may not grieve as others do

  218. who have no hope.

  219. So what's the hope, Paul?

  220. What's the hope that we have?

  221. Why should they not grieve?

  222. And again, if we were to answer that,

  223. we might say something like,

  224. well, we don't grieve because we have the hope of heaven.

  225. What does he say?

  226. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again,

  227. even so, through Jesus,

  228. God will bring with him

  229. those who have fallen asleep.

  230. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven

  231. with a cry of command,

  232. with the voice of an archangel,

  233. with the sound of the trumpet of God,

  234. and the dead in Christ will rise first.

  235. He's coming back here.

  236. And the dead will be raised.

  237. Do you see it?

  238. In other words, believer,

  239. our hope is not just spiritual.

  240. It is also very, very physical and tangible.

  241. We will receive new resurrected bodies

  242. at the return of Christ.

  243. Praise God.

  244. And so then my question is,

  245. back to our passage,

  246. question number two,

  247. well, what then will it be like?

  248. This is the question we all have, isn't it?

  249. Tell us what this resurrected body

  250. is going to be like.

  251. And in fact, it looks like Paul,

  252. he anticipates that question in our passage,

  253. doesn't he?

  254. Look there to verse 35.

  255. He says,

  256. someone's going to ask,

  257. how are the dead raised?

  258. With what kind of body do they come?

  259. And how does he answer?

  260. You foolish person.

  261. Doesn't Paul just drive you crazy?

  262. You foolish person.

  263. It sounds a little bit harsh to me, doesn't it?

  264. I think what this response shows us

  265. is that Paul is expecting the Corinthians

  266. just to write this whole thing off

  267. completely as absurd.

  268. He knows that they're just so obsessed

  269. with being spiritual people

  270. that the whole idea of resurrecting the body

  271. is just ridiculous to them.

  272. I mean, how are the dead going to be raised?

  273. Paul, are you serious?

  274. What kind of body are they going to get?

  275. You actually believe this, Paul?

  276. And Paul says,

  277. yes, in fact, I do.

  278. In fact, you already have all around you,

  279. if you would pay attention,

  280. you already have examples

  281. of what I'm trying to talk about here.

  282. If you will just look around you

  283. at the world you live in,

  284. you have examples all around you

  285. of transformation.

  286. Think of the seeds that you sow into the ground.

  287. For the believer,

  288. death is like sowing seeds.

  289. Y'all know I'm not much of a gardener

  290. or a farmer.

  291. Amanda, my wife, likes to garden.

  292. I like to eat what comes out of the garden.

  293. That's about the extent of my involvement there.

  294. But I know this,

  295. the seeds,

  296. when you buy seeds at a store,

  297. they don't look like the final product,

  298. do they?

  299. In fact, you get a little packet

  300. and it has a picture on the packet

  301. for simple people like me

  302. so that we know

  303. what should come out of the ground

  304. if it's successful.

  305. The final product comes from the seed,

  306. but if you were to hold up a seed

  307. and the final product

  308. hand by hand,

  309. side by side together,

  310. you can hardly believe

  311. that this end product

  312. comes from this little seed.

  313. I mean,

  314. you hold up a sunflower seed

  315. next to a full-grown sunflower,

  316. you can hardly believe

  317. that this came from that thing.

  318. Paul says,

  319. so it is

  320. with our bodies.

  321. God has put into nature itself

  322. examples of life,

  323. death,

  324. resurrection,

  325. and transformation.

  326. So don't write it off.

  327. You see it every day.

  328. Not only that,

  329. he says you also see

  330. examples of distinction

  331. and different kinds of bodies

  332. all around you.

  333. You do have a point of reference

  334. for this.

  335. It's not as absurd as you think.

  336. Look at all around you.

  337. Not all flesh is the same.

  338. Birds have wings

  339. so they can fly in the air.

  340. Fish have fins and gills

  341. so that they can swim in the water.

  342. They are fit for the water.

  343. God knows

  344. how to give each part

  345. of his creation

  346. a body that they need

  347. for the realm

  348. that they live in.

  349. And you have an earthly body

  350. that's fit for your life

  351. here on earth.

  352. And yes,

  353. you will have

  354. a heavenly body

  355. that's fit

  356. for your life

  357. in eternity.

  358. So if that's true,

  359. Paul,

  360. then again,

  361. we need to ask,

  362. well,

  363. what in the world

  364. will it be like?

  365. And look there,

  366. starting in verse 42.

  367. Because here on,

  368. he begins to describe

  369. this new body to us.

  370. He says,

  371. your resurrected body,

  372. the body that believers in Christ

  373. have to look forward to,

  374. he says,

  375. your resurrected body

  376. will be imperishable.

  377. Look there at verse 42.

  378. What's sown is perishable,

  379. but what is raised

  380. is imperishable.

  381. Now,

  382. we all know that

  383. this present body

  384. is perishable.

  385. I don't have to tell you that.

  386. Our bodies age,

  387. they hurt,

  388. they bruise,

  389. they bleed,

  390. they get sick,

  391. they have runny noses

  392. and sore throats.

  393. They got to go to the doctor

  394. and eventually,

  395. for every single one of us,

  396. eventually the time comes

  397. when they simply cannot keep going

  398. and they perish.

  399. Paul says,

  400. I got good news for you.

  401. Our resurrected body

  402. is going to be imperishable.

  403. This body that we get to enjoy

  404. for the rest of eternity

  405. is not subject to pain

  406. or decay

  407. or deterioration.

  408. The mind doesn't fade.

  409. The body doesn't weaken.

  410. Achy knees and arthritis,

  411. bad backs,

  412. bad breath,

  413. carpal tunnel,

  414. cancer,

  415. all of it's gone.

  416. Praise God.

  417. God,

  418. if you're suffering

  419. physically,

  420. and most of us are

  421. in some way,

  422. if you are suffering

  423. physically,

  424. Paul has good news.

  425. Yes,

  426. you who are in the Lord

  427. get to go to heaven

  428. and be done with it all,

  429. but then

  430. you will be made new

  431. with a new body

  432. that will be totally alive

  433. for the first time.

  434. No pain,

  435. no suffering,

  436. no threat of death.

  437. D.A. Carson

  438. says,

  439. you're not suffering

  440. from anything

  441. that a good resurrection

  442. can't fix.

  443. Amen.

  444. Our new bodies

  445. will be imperishable.

  446. Not only this,

  447. Paul says,

  448. your resurrected body

  449. will be glorious.

  450. Verse 43,

  451. it's sown in dishonor,

  452. but it's raised in glory.

  453. When we rise,

  454. our new bodies

  455. will be perfect.

  456. Are you in search

  457. of the perfect body?

  458. You want a plan

  459. to get the perfect body?

  460. Put your faith in Christ

  461. and hope in eternity.

  462. Our new bodies,

  463. he says,

  464. will be glorious.

  465. We'll be finally free

  466. from the presence

  467. and the power

  468. and the penalty

  469. of sin in the flesh.

  470. We will be

  471. as the bride of Christ

  472. presented to him

  473. without blemish.

  474. Spotless,

  475. and pure

  476. and glorious

  477. and radiant.

  478. We will be holy

  479. as he is holy

  480. at last.

  481. Praise God.

  482. In fact,

  483. he says,

  484. this new body

  485. will be powerful.

  486. Verse 43,

  487. it's sown in weakness

  488. and it's raised up

  489. in power.

  490. It will be raised

  491. in spiritual power.

  492. You think of the garden

  493. as Christ went to pray

  494. before his crucifixion?

  495. What did he say

  496. to the disciples?

  497. You remember?

  498. He tells his disciples,

  499. stay awake

  500. and pray

  501. that you might not

  502. enter into temptation.

  503. Why?

  504. Because he says,

  505. the spirit indeed

  506. is willing,

  507. but what?

  508. Help me.

  509. That flesh is weak.

  510. All of us experience this.

  511. Paul agrees

  512. in Romans chapter 7.

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  513. Paul says,

  514. I know that nothing good

  515. dwells in me

  516. that is in my flesh,

  517. for I have the desire

  518. to do what's right,

  519. but I don't have the ability

  520. to carry it out.

  521. That's the tension

  522. that every genuine believer

  523. in Christ feels

  524. in their battle with sin

  525. deep down

  526. by the grace of God.

  527. We desire to live

  528. for the Lord,

  529. but in our flesh

  530. we're so weak,

  531. but not in the resurrection.

  532. In the resurrection

  533. we will be raised up

  534. in power.

  535. Why?

  536. Because ultimately

  537. Paul says,

  538. the natural body

  539. will be put to death

  540. and we will be raised up

  541. a spiritual body.

  542. Verse 44.

  543. It is sown a natural body.

  544. It is raised a spiritual body.

  545. In other words, church,

  546. our hope is that

  547. because we are united

  548. to Jesus Christ by faith,

  549. in our resurrection

  550. we will be made like Jesus.

  551. Made like Him.

  552. Like Him we rise.

  553. We just sang.

  554. That's an incredible hope,

  555. isn't it?

  556. Our hope is not just

  557. that we can die

  558. and escape all the bad stuff

  559. in this life.

  560. Anybody can hope in that.

  561. In fact, non-believers

  562. all over the planet

  563. have hope like that.

  564. That's why they rob

  565. from our comfort

  566. when death comes

  567. at their door.

  568. When death comes

  569. around a non-believer

  570. they say things like,

  571. well, they're in a better place.

  572. They're resting in peace.

  573. Anybody can hope in that.

  574. That's not the extent

  575. of our hope.

  576. Our hope is that

  577. we will be with Christ.

  578. Not only that we'll be with Him,

  579. but that we will be made

  580. like Christ.

  581. Look there to verse 47.

  582. It says,

  583. The first man, Adam,

  584. was from the earth,

  585. a man of dust.

  586. The second man,

  587. the second Adam,

  588. that's Christ,

  589. is from heaven.

  590. As was the man of dust,

  591. so also are those

  592. who are of the dust.

  593. And as is the man of heaven,

  594. so also are those

  595. who are of heaven.

  596. Here's the key.

  597. Just as we have borne

  598. the image of the man of dust,

  599. so also we shall bear

  600. the image of the man of heaven.

  601. I know we just had Easter

  602. last Sunday,

  603. but we need to talk

  604. about Christmas

  605. and the glory,

  606. the miracle of the incarnation

  607. of Jesus.

  608. The wonder of what happened there

  609. at the birth of Christ

  610. is that for the first time

  611. in all eternity,

  612. the Son of God

  613. took on human flesh.

  614. The Word became flesh

  615. and dwelt among us.

  616. We are made in the image of God.

  617. Paul says in Colossians

  618. that He is the very image

  619. of the invisible God.

  620. He took on flesh.

  621. Why did He do it?

  622. In order to redeem His people.

  623. He came to be as we are.

  624. He came to live in the place

  625. of His people,

  626. die in the place of His people,

  627. and then rise up from the grave

  628. bodily with a new,

  629. imperishable,

  630. powerful,

  631. glorious,

  632. spiritual body

  633. so that we might be made like Him.

  634. He came to be as we are

  635. so that we might go to be as He is.

  636. Made like Him,

  637. like Him,

  638. we rise.

  639. Robert Candlish,

  640. he says it like this.

  641. He says,

  642. He is risen for them.

  643. Then they rise in Him.

  644. They rise because He has risen.

  645. They rise as He is risen.

  646. They rise to be as He is

  647. and where He is now that He is risen.

  648. They rise as His body,

  649. the fullness of Him

  650. that filleth all in all.

  651. Our hope

  652. is not just that we get to be with Him,

  653. but that we get to be like Him.

  654. We who trust in Christ by faith

  655. will be raised up from the dead,

  656. physically,

  657. in new,

  658. glorified bodies.

  659. That's our hope, church.

  660. So third question,

  661. why must it happen?

  662. Never think about that.

  663. Why is this whole thing even necessary?

  664. Why do we need that sort of transformation?

  665. Look there to verse 50.

  666. Verse 50 tells us,

  667. Paul says,

  668. I tell you this, brothers,

  669. flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God,

  670. nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

  671. In other words,

  672. we are not currently in our present state

  673. fit for eternity.

  674. Something's got to change.

  675. The kingdom of God itself

  676. is imperishable

  677. and glorious

  678. and full of power

  679. and spiritual.

  680. And for it to be filled with citizens,

  681. those who are made to enjoy it

  682. for the rest of eternity,

  683. well, then they too

  684. must be made imperishable,

  685. glorious,

  686. full of power,

  687. and spiritual.

  688. This is the key issue, isn't it?

  689. Our flesh and blood,

  690. as it currently is right now,

  691. cannot inherit the kingdom of God.

  692. We must be transformed.

  693. Our capacity

  694. and our capability

  695. is far too limited

  696. in our current state

  697. to enjoy all that God has in store

  698. for us who believe.

  699. Yeah, every now and then,

  700. we have a meal around here.

  701. It's about time for another one.

  702. A potluck

  703. or a Thanksgiving feast

  704. and there's never once

  705. been a shortage of food,

  706. right?

  707. Not in my time, at least.

  708. Every time we go,

  709. there are meats

  710. and veggies

  711. and casseroles

  712. and pies

  713. and cakes.

  714. There's more food

  715. than we could possibly

  716. begin to enjoy.

  717. And then we got that whole table

  718. of desserts.

  719. It's all there.

  720. Now, I will never understand it.

  721. Every time we do it,

  722. I stand up right here

  723. and I say,

  724. if you don't have lunch plans already,

  725. come and join us.

  726. We want you to come.

  727. There's a feast back there

  728. for you to enjoy.

  729. There's a seat at a table for you.

  730. Come and enjoy it.

  731. And every time,

  732. there are people

  733. who leave hungry

  734. without eating.

  735. I stay.

  736. All right?

  737. And every time,

  738. as I stay,

  739. I run into the same two problems.

  740. For one,

  741. my plate is always too small.

  742. Miss Ann breaks out

  743. the heavy plates.

  744. We can't mess with the flimsy ones

  745. for Thanksgiving meal.

  746. We get the heavy plates out.

  747. We know we got to hold some weight.

  748. But even so,

  749. try as I may,

  750. even with a big plate,

  751. my appetite can't handle all of it.

  752. I simply,

  753. as much as I might want to,

  754. I cannot try.

  755. I can't enjoy all of the feasts

  756. that's laid out before me.

  757. My capacity is too small.

  758. Well, friend,

  759. in the gospel,

  760. we are called,

  761. invited,

  762. invited,

  763. to come and to feast

  764. on the goodness of God.

  765. That's what I stand up

  766. and do every single week.

  767. I say,

  768. come,

  769. repent of your sins.

  770. And by faith in Christ,

  771. you get to enjoy

  772. all that God

  773. has to offer

  774. now and into eternity.

  775. I make that invitation

  776. every week.

  777. And every week,

  778. there's some who walk away hungry.

  779. But for those who

  780. have come to faith in Him

  781. by the grace of God,

  782. what happens in us

  783. is that we've been given

  784. a desire for the Lord.

  785. It's a hunger for Him.

  786. Now,

  787. that didn't come from us.

  788. That came from Him.

  789. And it's evidence of new life

  790. that you've been born again.

  791. We desire Him

  792. and we love Him

  793. and we lose our appetite for sin.

  794. We gain an appetite for Christ.

  795. But in this present life,

  796. we simply don't have the capacity

  797. to enjoy all that He has in store for us.

  798. The feast is there,

  799. but our plates are too small.

  800. The desire in a believer is there.

  801. Our appetite is limited.

  802. One prayer that we all

  803. ought to pray regularly is,

  804. Lord, would You increase

  805. my desire for You?

  806. Lord, would You increase

  807. my appetite for You?

  808. Lord, would You increase

  809. my capacity to enjoy You?

  810. We pray that now.

  811. But when we are resurrected,

  812. guess what?

  813. We won't have to pray

  814. that prayer anymore.

  815. Why?

  816. Because we will be made

  817. capable of enjoying God

  818. in His eternal kingdom

  819. for the rest of eternity.

  820. That's what awaits us in Christ.

  821. The more you spend time

  822. thinking on that

  823. and meditating on it

  824. and putting your hope in it,

  825. the more you desire it

  826. and the more you ask,

  827. well, when will this happen?

  828. When will this come?

  829. When can I come

  830. and enjoy God forever

  831. in the new heavens

  832. and the new earth?

  833. When will I eat and drink

  834. with Christ Himself

  835. in the kingdom of God?

  836. And that's our fourth question.

  837. When will it happen?

  838. Look there to verse 51 with me.

  839. Paul says,

  840. Behold, I tell you a mystery.

  841. We shall not all sleep,

  842. but we shall all be changed

  843. in a moment,

  844. in the twinkling of an eye,

  845. at the last trumpet.

  846. For the trumpet will sound

  847. and the dead in Christ

  848. will be raised imperishable

  849. and we shall be changed.

  850. For this perishable body

  851. must put on the imperishable.

  852. And this mortal body

  853. must put on immortality.

  854. When the perishable

  855. puts on the imperishable

  856. and the mortal puts on immortality,

  857. then shall come to pass the saying.

  858. Then shall come to pass

  859. the saying that is written,

  860. Death is swallowed up in victory.

  861. O death, where is your victory?

  862. O death, where is your sting?

  863. The sting of death is sin

  864. and the power of sin is the law.

  865. But thanks be to God

  866. who gives us the victory

  867. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  868. Now Paul is quoting here

  869. from the book of Isaiah,

    Isaiah 25 chapter mention

  870. chapter 25.

  871. I'll read the passage to you.

  872. He says,

  873. On this mountain,

  874. the Lord of hosts

  875. will make for all peoples

  876. a feast of rich food,

  877. a feast of well-aged wine,

  878. of rich food,

  879. full of marrow,

  880. of aged wine,

  881. well-refined.

  882. And He will swallow up

  883. on this mountain

  884. the covering that is cast

  885. over all peoples,

  886. the veil that is spread

  887. over all nations.

  888. He will swallow up death forever.

  889. And the Lord God

  890. will wipe away tears

  891. from all faces.

  892. And the reproach of His people

  893. He will take away

  894. from all the earth,

  895. for the Lord has spoken.

  896. It will be said on that day,

  897. Behold, this is our God.

  898. We have waited for Him

  899. that He might save us.

  900. This is the Lord.

  901. We have waited for Him.

  902. Let us be glad

  903. and rejoice

  904. in His salvation.

  905. And believers have

  906. hoped in this

  907. for hundreds of years.

  908. This is the days of Isaiah.

  909. When will it happen?

  910. When will death

  911. be swallowed up?

  912. When will the Lord

  913. wipe away every tear?

  914. When will we get

  915. to enjoy this feast?

  916. When will we be resurrected?

  917. When will all things

  918. be made new?

  919. At the return

  920. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  921. That's our hope, church.

  922. Revelation picks up on this.

  923. John says in Revelation chapter 21,

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  924. I saw a new heaven

  925. and a new earth.

  926. For the first heaven

  927. and the first earth

  928. had passed away

  929. and the sea was no more.

  930. And I saw the holy city,

  931. New Jerusalem,

  932. coming down out of heaven

  933. from God,

  934. prepared as a bride

  935. adorned for her husband.

  936. And I heard a loud voice

  937. from the throne saying,

  938. Behold,

  939. the dwelling place of God

  940. is with man.

  941. He will dwell with them

  942. and they will be His people.

  943. God Himself will be with them

  944. as their God.

  945. He will wipe away

  946. every tear from their eyes

  947. and death shall be no more.

  948. Neither shall there be mourning

  949. nor crying

  950. nor pain anymore

  951. for the former things

  952. have passed away.

  953. And He who was seated

  954. on the throne said,

  955. Behold,

  956. I am making all things new.

  957. Church,

  958. the realization of our hope,

  959. the end of death,

  960. the end of suffering,

  961. the renewal of all things,

  962. the full enjoyment

  963. of the presence of the Lord

  964. in His eternal kingdom

  965. will come at the return

  966. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  967. Christ,

  968. our hope

  969. is not simply

  970. that we would escape

  971. from this world

  972. and get away from all of it,

  973. but that Jesus Christ

  974. would come and finish

  975. what He started.

  976. That He would come

  977. and finally put an end

  978. to sin

  979. and an end to death

  980. and an end to the devil

  981. and that we would be made

  982. fit for eternity with Him

  983. in the new heavens

  984. and the new earth.

  985. That's what awaits us

  986. who believe in Christ.

  987. Our hope is not just heaven

  988. as good as that will be.

  989. It is the new heavens

  990. and the new earth

  991. and we,

  992. the new Jerusalem,

  993. fully prepared

  994. and adorned

  995. for all eternity

  996. with the Lord.

  997. Friend,

  998. is that your hope?

  999. If not,

  1000. then you're called

  1001. right this moment

  1002. to turn

1003. and to put your faith

  1004. in Christ

1005. and receive this certain hope

1006. of life forever with Him.

  1007. And if so,

1008. if this is your hope,

  1009. then friend,

  1010. we need to ask

  1011. one final question here

  1012. as we close.

  1013. Fifth.

  1014. Fifth question.

  1015. So what?

  1016. So what?

  1017. You know,

  1018. Paul is never content

1019. to just give us doctrine

  1020. without application.

  1021. He wants theology

  1022. that walks.

  1023. What difference

1024. does all of this make?

1025. God wants you to look there

  1026. to verses 57

  1027. and following.

  1028. And here,

  1029. Paul closes out

  1030. with four applications.

  1031. Application number one,

  1032. thank God

  1033. for the gospel

  1034. of Jesus Christ.

  1035. Thank God.

1036. If this is what awaits us,

1037. then we ought to live

  1038. a life of thankfulness

  1039. to God in Christ

  1040. right now.

  1041. Thanks be to God,

  1042. he says,

  1043. who gives us victory

1044. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1045. Thank you,

  1046. God,

  1047. for rescuing me

1048. from this body of death.

  1049. Thank you,

  1050. God,

1051. for hope beyond the grave.

  1052. Thank you,

  1053. God,

1054. for the hope of freedom

  1055. from the pain

  1056. and the aches

  1057. and the suffering

1058. that I feel in this life.

  1059. Thank you,

  1060. God,

  1061. for the certain hope

  1062. of eternity forever

  1063. in a physical,

  1064. real,

  1065. tangible,

  1066. remade universe.

  1067. Second application.

  1068. Therefore,

  1069. my beloved brothers,

  1070. be steadfast.

  1071. be steadfast.

  1072. In the midst

  1073. of an ever-changing world,

  1074. our culture

  1075. changes day by day,

  1076. ever-changing expectations

  1077. and norms

  1078. for what's wrong,

  1079. what's right,

  1080. what's acceptable,

  1081. what's not.

  1082. The certain hope

  1083. of eternity

  1084. with the Lord

  1085. in an unshakable,

  1086. unchanging kingdom

  1087. encourages God's people

  1088. to be faithful.

1089. Life is just a vapor.

  1090. And then,

  1091. eternity.

  1092. Be steadfast,

  1093. believer.

  1094. Third application,

  1095. he says,

  1096. be immovable.

  1097. Be immovable.

  1098. You know,

  1099. when your heart

  1100. and your mind

  1101. and your soul

  1102. are so anchored

  1103. anchored in eternity,

  1104. you will not be

  1105. easily shaken

  1106. by the present.

  1107. When you're so full

  1108. of hope

  1109. and eager expectation

  1110. for the joys

  1111. of the kingdom

  1112. to come,

  1113. you will not

  1114. be easily uprooted

  1115. by the trials

  1116. of the present.

  1117. When your mind

  1118. is steadfastly

  1119. fixed on the truth,

  1120. you will not be

  1121. easily swept away

  1122. by every wind

  1123. and wave

  1124. of false doctrine.

  1125. Be immovable,

  1126. believer,

  1127. as you hope

  1128. in your certain future.

  1129. Application number four.

  1130. He says,

  1131. always abound

  1132. in the work

  1133. of the Lord.

  1134. Always

  1135. abound

  1136. in the work

  1137. of the Lord.

  1138. Church,

  1139. we have a mission

  1140. here in this life.

  1141. We have a mission

  1142. that Christ

  1143. has given us

  1144. as the church

  1145. here in this world.

1146. So long as we have

  1147. life and breath

  1148. in this physical body,

  1149. we are to be

  1150. always abounding

  1151. in the work

  1152. of the Lord.

  1153. We have a mission

  1154. to accomplish.

  1155. Y'all know

  1156. the mission

  1157. of our church.

  1158. We exist

  1159. to magnify

  1160. the glory of God

  1161. in the gospel

  1162. of Jesus Christ.

  1163. Three ways

  1164. we do it.

  1165. As we enjoy God,

  1166. as we equip

  1167. the saints,

  1168. as we evangelize

  1169. the lost,

  1170. our hope

  1171. in our certain future

  1172. does not mean

  1173. that we just

  1174. check out

  1175. and wait for death

  1176. and wait for eternity

  1177. with the Lord.

  1178. No.

  1179. We know

  1180. that we ought

  1181. to always abound

  1182. in the work

  1183. of the Lord,

1184. knowing that in the Lord

  1185. your labor

  1186. is not in vain,

  1187. but will echo

  1188. into eternity

  1189. to the praise

  1190. and glory of God.

  1191. Let's pray.

  1192. Lord,

  1193. Lord,

  1194. God,

  1195. we thank you

  1196. for the hope

  1197. of eternity

  1198. with Christ.

  1199. We thank you

  1200. that Christ

  1201. has come to be

  1202. as we are,

  1203. that he might

  1204. make us

  1205. as he is

  1206. in resurrection

  1207. power.

  1208. We thank you,

  1209. Lord,

  1210. for the certain

  1211. hope that we have

  1212. that we get

  1213. to enjoy you,

  1214. feast forever

  1215. on all of

  1216. your glory,

  1217. all of your grace,

  1218. that we'll be made

  1219. fit for eternity.

  1220. Lord,

  1221. we pray that

  1222. in light of this

  1223. we would hope

1224. in what you've given us

  1225. and that we would

  1226. always abound

  1227. in the work

  1228. of the Lord.

  1229. We pray this

  1230. in Jesus' name.

  1231. Amen.
