  1. Amen. Well, please take your Bibles and let's open them up this morning to the book of Romans.

  2. The book of Romans. This is week three, the final week in our mini-series on the resurrection. We'll be back in Genesis, Lord willing, next Sunday.

  3. But for this week, we're in Romans, in Romans chapter 6, verses 1 through 14.

    Romans 6:1–14

  4. Romans 6, 1 through 14. And when you found it, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word this morning.

  5. Amen.

  6. What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means. How can we who have died to sin still live in it?

  7. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

  8. We were buried, therefore, with Him by baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

  9. For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His.

  10. We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

  11. For one who has died has been set free from sin.

  12. Now, if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him.

  13. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again.

  14. Death no longer has dominion over Him.

  15. For the death He died, He died to sin once for all, but the life He lives, He lives to God.

  16. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

  17. Let not sin, therefore, reign in your mortal body to make you obey its passions.

  18. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life,

  19. and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.

  20. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law, but under grace.

  21. This is the word of the Lord.

  22. Father, we thank You for this word.

  23. We thank You for freedom in Christ.

  24. We thank You, Lord, that for those who are in Christ, sin no longer enslaves us, no longer rules us.

  25. That there is freedom, truly, and power.

  26. By the power of Your resurrection, there's power to walk in newness of life.

  27. We pray, Lord, that we would see it, take hold of it by faith this morning.

  28. We pray in Jesus' name.

  29. Amen.

  30. You may be seated.

  31. Again, this is week three of our series here on the resurrection.

  32. Our final week looking at the resurrection and its implications for us.

  33. Week one was Easter Sunday.

  34. We looked at Jesus' resurrection.

  35. We saw how His resurrection shapes our faith.

  36. Because Christ, in fact, has been raised from the dead.

  37. We are not in our sins.

  38. Our faith is not futile.

  39. We're not worthy of pity.

  40. His resurrection changes everything.

  41. That was Easter Sunday.

  42. Last week we saw how His resurrection shapes our future.

  43. We look ahead and see that because He is risen, we too, who are united to Him by faith,

  44. we too will be risen, resurrected to be with Him and like Him.

  45. We will be raised up with new, glorified, resurrected, perfected bodies,

  46. made fit for eternity with Him.

  47. This week, today, as we look here to Romans chapter 6,

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  48. we get to look at the implications of His resurrection for life in the in-between.

  49. Right now.

  50. And we get to see how His resurrection shapes our fight with sin.

  51. In other words, church, His resurrection, it matters for us right now in our fight with sin.

  52. Because Jesus Christ has raised from the dead,

  53. those who are united to Him by faith are also raised to walk in newness of life.

  54. Because Jesus Christ is raised from the dead,

  55. then those who are united to Him by faith are right now empowered to live right now in resurrection power.

  56. Victory over sin.

  57. Now, I assume that you recognize that we are in a war with sin here and now.

  58. Do we understand this?

  59. J.C. Ryle, the bishop, J.C. Ryle, he says,

  60. We must not conceal from ourselves that true Christianity brings with it a daily cross in this life,

  61. while it offers us a crown of glory in the life to come.

  62. The flesh must be daily crucified.

  63. The devil must be daily resisted.

  64. The world must be daily overcome.

  65. There is a warfare to be waged and a battle to be fought.

  66. And all this is the inseparable accompaniment of true religion.

  67. Heaven is not to be won without it.

  68. Never was there a truer word spoken than the old saying,

  69. No cross, no crown.

  70. If we never found this out by experience, our souls are in a poorer condition.

  71. He goes on.

  72. The true Christian is called to be a soldier and must behave as such from the day of his conversion to the day of his death.

  73. He is not meant to live a life of religious ease, laziness, and security.

  74. He must never imagine for a moment that he can sleep and doze along the way to heaven,

  75. like on traveling in an easy carriage.

  76. If the Bible is the rule of his faith and practice,

  77. he will find his course laid down very plainly in this matter.

  78. He must fight.

  79. So this morning, as we look to Paul in Romans chapter 6,

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  80. we get to see how we are to fight.

  81. And we'll see three ways that the resurrection shapes our fight with sin.

  82. This will be our outline this morning if you're taking notes.

  83. There's three ways that the resurrection of Jesus shapes our fight with sin.

  84. First, we see the resurrection of Jesus gives us a new identity.

  85. The resurrection of Jesus gives us a new identity.

  86. Look, they're starting in verse 1.

  87. Paul says in chapter 6, verse 1, he says,

  88. What shall we say then?

  89. Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

  90. Now, obviously, I need to give a little bit of context here

  91. because we're jumping into the middle of a book,

  92. in the middle of an argument.

  93. Paul, in the first five chapters of Romans,

  94. has been laying out the riches of the gospel of Jesus Christ

  95. in these first five chapters.

  96. And he has just finished insisting that we are saved,

  97. not by our works, not by our effort,

  98. and not by our birthright, not by anything in us,

  99. but sheerly by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

  100. We are justified, declared righteous in the sight of God,

  101. not by our goodness, not by our effort,

  102. not by our law-keeping,

  103. not by our cultural identity, as the Jews insisted,

  104. but rather, Paul's been saying here,

  105. we are declared righteous in the sight of God

  106. apart from anything in us,

  107. completely apart from our own obedience,

  108. separate from it.

  109. We are declared righteous in the sight of God

  110. simply by receiving Christ's righteousness in our place.

  111. So then the objection that he anticipates

  112. to such free grace is this.

  113. Well, if that's how this whole thing works, Paul,

  114. then I guess I can just keep on sinning.

  115. In fact, Paul, if grace is the whole deal,

  116. if grace is what magnifies the glory of God,

  117. if God is so eager to show sinners grace,

  118. why don't we just keep on sinning

  119. so that God can be gracious to us,

  120. and then He gets the glory?

  121. Why not just walk in sin if we're so covered by grace?

  122. You see the issue here.

  123. How does Paul respond?

  124. By no means.

  125. No.

  126. Absolutely not.

  127. That's not how Christians ought to think.

  128. That's not how Christians ought to live

  129. or how they ought to act.

  130. We don't just keep on living in sin.

  131. Why?

  132. Because if you are united to Christ by faith,

  133. then you have been given a new identity in Christ.

  134. That used to be who you were who walked in sin,

  135. but now, if you're in Christ,

  136. that's you no longer.

  137. In fact, he says in verse 2,

  138. the new you is now dead to sin.

  139. There in verse 2.

  140. How can we who have died to sin still live in it?

  141. In other words, it doesn't add up here.

  142. It doesn't make any sense.

  143. Paul says there is something fundamentally off,

  144. something fundamentally inconsistent

  145. with somebody who claims to be a Christian

  146. and yet lives in unrepentant, persistent sin.

  147. Why?

  148. Because that old person who once lived in unrepentant,

  149. persistent sin, who walked in it,

  150. that old person is dead.

  151. We've died to it.

  152. We no longer live to sin.

  153. We no longer live for sin.

  154. That's what it means to be a Christian.

  155. That you have died to sin.

  156. Now, let me be clear because I want you to notice

  157. what I said and what I did not say.

  158. I did not say that if you're a Christian,

  159. you will never sin again.

  160. Raise your hand if you've known that to be true

  161. in your own life.

  162. That's every one of us.

  163. Clearly, Christians still sin.

  164. You're looking at a Christian who still sins.

  165. In fact, the more I walk with the Lord,

  166. the closer I walk with Him,

  167. the more I see His holiness,

  168. the more I see the depth of my sin in my life.

  169. Every single week, I mean, my goodness,

  170. I see my attitudes to be sinful.

  171. The way I respond to my wife and my children

  172. is often sinful.

  173. I see the depth of my selfishness,

  174. the way I allocate my time.

  175. I am a sinful, sinful person.

  176. I am not without sin and neither are you.

  177. Paul is not demanding perfection here.

  178. Okay, I want to be clear.

  179. There is a difference, though,

  180. between battling with sin

  181. and living in sin.

  182. Do we see the difference?

  183. There is a difference between wrestling with your sin

  184. and walking in sin.

  185. There is a difference between recognizing sin in your life

  186. by the grace of God

  187. and repenting of it

  188. and grieving it when you see it

  189. and saying,

  190. Lord, I need your help with it

  191. and saying,

  192. well, this is just who I am.

  193. You have your own flaws.

  194. I have mine.

  195. Nothing to see here.

  196. I can do what I want.

  197. I can live what I want.

  198. I'm covered by grace

  199. because I can live however I want

  200. because I prayed a prayer at VBS

  201. when I was six years old.

  202. I can live however I want

  203. because 20 years ago,

  204. I walked down an aisle

  205. and said,

  206. I want to be a Christian.

  207. Paul says,

  208. if you are in Christ,

  209. if that's genuine,

  210. then you have died to sin

  211. as a power over you.

  212. It doesn't reign over you any longer

  213. if you're in Christ.

  214. In fact, he says,

  215. don't you know that your baptism

  216. is a picture of this new life?

  217. Look at verse 3.

  218. Do you not know,

  219. verse 3,

  220. do you not know

  221. that all of us

  222. who have been baptized

  223. into Christ Jesus

  224. were baptized into his death?

  225. We were buried with him,

  226. therefore,

  227. by baptism into death

  228. in order that,

  229. just as Christ was raised

  230. from the dead

  231. by the glory of the Father,

  232. we too might walk

  233. in newness of life.

  234. Now,

  235. I can't miss this opportunity

  236. to teach a little bit

  237. about baptism.

  238. Okay,

  239. so we're going to divert here

  240. just for a second.

  241. We'll come back.

  242. Notice here

  243. that he just assumes

  244. that everybody

  245. in the church of Rome,

  246. every member of the church

  247. in Rome

  248. has been baptized.

  249. That's the assumption.

  250. Now,

  251. what is baptism?

  252. Baptism is the public initiation

  253. into the church community.

  254. It's marking you off

  255. from once belonging

  256. to the world,

  257. now to belonging

  258. to Christ.

  259. And not just to Christ,

  260. but it's affirmed

  261. by a community

  262. of believers

  263. to say,

  264. you belong to this

  265. local body of Christ

  266. here in this place.

  267. Also notice

  268. that clearly

  269. these Romans

  270. have been baptized

  271. as believers.

  272. This isn't a children's book.

  273. These people,

  274. these Christians,

  275. are capable

  276. of understanding

  277. this teaching.

  278. By the grace of God,

  279. they're capable

  280. by the power

  281. of the Holy Spirit

  282. in them

  283. of walking

  284. in newness of life.

  285. They are capable

  286. by the grace of God

  287. and the Holy Spirit

  288. in them

  289. to look back

  290. on their baptism

  291. and reflect

  292. on the meaning

  293. and the message

  294. of what it means

  295. for them in Christ.

  296. So what does it mean?

  297. He says,

  298. look back

  299. on your baptism

  300. and remember

  301. your identity

  302. in Jesus.

  303. Remember,

  304. you're going down

  305. into the water.

  306. That's symbolic

  307. of Jesus' death

  308. and not just

  309. Jesus' death

  310. but your death

  311. in Him.

  312. You were buried

  313. with Him

  314. by baptism

  315. but you didn't

  316. stay down

  317. in the water,

  318. did you?

  319. Praise God.

  320. I haven't lost one yet.

  321. We brought every one

  322. of them up.

  323. They don't stay

  324. dead down

  325. in the water.

  326. They are raised

  327. up to walk

  328. and newness

  329. of life.

  330. Just as Jesus Christ

  331. didn't stay

  332. in the grave

  333. but was raised

  334. and resurrected

  335. by the power

  336. of God

  337. just as Jesus Christ

  338. has now victory

  339. over sin,

  340. victory over the grave,

  341. Paul says,

  342. you believer

  343. in Him

  344. share His victory

  345. over the grave.

  346. He says,

  347. Christian,

  348. remember what

  349. your baptism

  350. represents.

  351. It's just like

  352. a married man

  353. might look down

  354. at his wedding ring

  355. and see

  356. in this physical

  357. visible sign

  358. a picture

  359. of his union

  360. with his wife.

  361. It's a reminder

  362. of the vows

  363. that they've made

  364. to each other.

  365. It's a reminder

  366. that his identity

  367. now is I am

  368. a married man.

  369. That's who I am.

  370. So now the believer

  371. looks back

  372. on their baptism

  373. as a picture

  374. of their union

  375. with Jesus Christ.

  376. A reminder

  377. of the vows

  378. that are made

  379. of Him

  380. to us

  381. and us to Him.

  382. It's a picture

  383. of their new identity

  384. in Him.

  385. Yes, Christian,

  386. of course,

  387. we will wrestle

  388. with sin.

  389. We will fall

  390. into sin

  391. and the more clearly

  392. you see the holiness

  393. of God,

  394. the more clearly

  395. you will see

  396. your own sinfulness.

  397. And yet,

  398. Paul says,

  399. if you are in Christ,

  400. your identity

  401. is no longer

  402. sinner.

  403. By the grace

  404. of God,

  405. you are no longer

  406. sinner.

  407. You are saint.

  408. You're no longer

  409. a child of the enemy.

  410. You're no longer

  411. a child of wrath.

  412. You are,

  413. by the grace of God,

  414. a child of God.

  415. By God's grace,

  416. you are no longer

  417. dead to God

  418. and alive to sin.

  419. By the grace of God,

  420. you are now

  421. dead to sin

  422. and alive to God

  423. in Christ.

  424. That's your identity

  425. in Him.

  426. Paul says it like this

  427. in Galatians 2,

    Galatians 2:20

  428. verse 20.

  429. He says,

  430. I have been crucified

  431. with Christ.

  432. Therefore,

  433. I no longer live.

  434. But Jesus Christ

  435. now lives in me.

  436. The life I live

  437. in the flesh,

  438. I live by faith

  439. in the Son of God.

  440. who loved me

  441. and gave Himself

  442. for me.

  443. The resurrection

  444. of Jesus

  445. gives us

  446. a brand new

  447. identity

  448. in Christ.

  449. Not only that,

  450. but second,

  451. second,

  452. the resurrection

  453. of Jesus

  454. gives us

  455. a new victory.

  456. A new victory.

  457. And that new identity

  458. in Christ,

  459. it comes with

  460. a new position

  461. in regards to sin.

  462. it comes with

  463. Christ's position

  464. in regards to sin.

  465. If you are in Christ,

  466. you have a position

  467. of victory

  468. over sin.

  469. Not just in the future.

  470. Right now,

  471. in the present,

  472. you have a position

  473. of victory

  474. over sin.

  475. Do you believe it?

  476. Look there

  477. to verse 5.

  478. It says,

  479. for if we have been

  480. united with Him

  481. in a death like His,

  482. we shall certainly

  483. be united with Him

  484. in a resurrection

  485. like His.

  486. And we know

  487. that our old self

  488. was crucified with Him

  489. in order that the body

  490. of sin

  491. might be brought

  492. to nothing

  493. so that we

  494. would no longer

  495. be enslaved

  496. to sin.

  497. One who has died

  498. has been set free

  499. from sin.

  500. Now,

  501. if we have died

  502. with Christ,

  503. we believe that we

  504. will also live

  505. with Him.

  506. We know that

  507. Christ being raised

  508. from the dead

  509. will never die again.

  510. Death no longer

  511. has dominion over Him.

  512. For the death He died,

  513. He died to sin

  514. once for all.

  515. But the life He lives,

  516. He lives to God.

  517. I want you to notice

  518. there's two words here.

  519. Two images

  520. that give us a picture

  521. of the power of sin

  522. over the non-believer.

  523. Did you see those?

  524. He says in verse 6,

  525. Christ has died

  526. and risen

  527. that by faith in Him

  528. we may no longer

  529. be enslaved

  530. to sin.

  531. That's the first word.

  532. Enslaved to sin

  533. outside of Christ.

  534. The non-believer

  535. is enslaved

  536. to sin.

  537. That's number one.

  538. And then there's

  539. another here

  540. in verse 9.

  541. Christ died

  542. and rose from the grave

  543. never to die again.

  544. He is right now

  545. in the present,

  546. in this moment,

  547. totally alive

  548. to God.

  549. Paul says

  550. death no longer

  551. has dominion

  552. over Him.

  553. That's the second word.

  554. It's dominion.

  555. Outside of Christ,

  556. the non-believer

  557. is under the dominion

  558. of sin.

  559. There is no

  560. neutral territory

  561. here in the spiritual realm.

  562. There's no

  563. Switzerland

  564. in the spiritual realm.

  565. Okay?

  566. No neutrality.

  567. And so,

  568. Paul says it again

  569. here in verse 14

  570. to the believer.

  571. He says,

  572. sin will have

  573. no dominion

  574. over you

  575. since you are not

  576. under law

  577. but under grace.

  578. It's one or the other.

  579. Let's just think

  580. about these images

  581. for a minute.

  582. We should realize

  583. here the way

  584. Paul's talking

  585. about sin

  586. is not just

  587. the bad things

  588. we do.

  589. Okay?

  590. It's not just

  591. isolated bad thoughts,

  592. bad actions,

  593. mean words,

  594. bad things that we do,

  595. isolated mistakes.

  596. Paul says,

  597. Paul describes it

  598. as a power

  599. over us.

  600. He says,

  601. sin enslaves people.

  602. People walk in sin

  603. because they are

  604. slaves to sin.

  605. Sinful actions,

  606. they flow out

  607. of a sinful condition.

  608. They are the result

  609. of sin

  610. waging authority

  611. over us.

  612. We're not neutral here.

  613. Outside of the freedom

  614. of Christ,

  615. we can't do anything

  616. other than be a slave

  617. to sin.

  618. Why?

  619. Because that enslaving

  620. power of sin

  621. has dominion

  622. over us

  623. if we're outside

  624. of Christ.

  625. Outside of Christ,

  626. it has authority

  627. over us.

  628. If you're not in Christ,

  629. you are in sin.

  630. If you're not submitting

  631. to Christ,

  632. you are submitting

  633. yourself to sin.

  634. You have no power,

  635. no freedom

  636. in this situation.

  637. You know,

  638. people fool themselves

  639. into thinking

  640. that they're free

  641. as they live in sin.

  642. They say,

  643. I'm free to live

  644. and do

  645. and act as I want.

  646. How in the world

  647. if I can do

  648. whatever I want?

  649. I can choose

  650. to live

  651. however I want.

  652. How in the world

  653. am I a slave?

  654. I have the power here.

  655. Friend,

  656. that is a lie.

  657. The Bible says

  658. even your wants

  659. are controlled

  660. by sin.

  661. Even your very desires

  662. that are the impulses

  663. that your actions

  664. flow from,

  665. that is under

  666. the dominion of sin.

  667. Sin is the master

  668. and you are the slave.

  669. He tells us later on

  670. in verse 16,

  671. you are slaves

  672. of the one

  673. whom you obey.

  674. This is the natural state

  675. of every single person

  676. outside of Christ.

  677. What they need

  678. more than anything.

  679. It isn't behavioral control.

  680. It isn't moralism.

  681. It's not

  682. to hear somebody tell them

  683. do this,

  684. don't do that.

  685. Stop doing that.

  686. Try harder.

  687. Be better.

  688. Clean yourself up.

  689. That's not going to help anybody.

  690. What they need

  691. more than anything

  692. is to hear

  693. the good news

  694. of the gospel of Christ.

  695. That Jesus Christ

  696. has come

  697. to set sinners

  698. free

  699. from the power

  700. of sin.

  701. And that is only

  702. by coming to him

  703. in faith

  704. that one is set free

  705. from the bondage of sin.

  706. And so,

  707. Paul tells us in Romans 10,

  708. if you confess

  709. with your mouth

  710. that Jesus is Lord

  711. and you believe

  712. in your heart

  713. that God raised him

  714. from the dead,

  715. you will be saved.

  716. All who are outside

  717. of Christ

  718. are slaves

  719. to sin.

  720. But Paul

  721. isn't talking

  722. to non-believers here.

  723. He's talking

  724. to believers.

  725. He's talking

  726. to those

  727. who are professing

  728. to be in Christ.

  729. And so,

  730. he says,

  731. don't you get it?

  732. Christ has come

  733. to set you free.

  734. Don't you understand

  735. what Jesus has done

  736. for us?

  737. That's who you used

  738. to be.

  739. You used to be

  740. enslaved to sin.

  741. You used to be

  742. under his power

  743. but no longer.

  744. Christ died

  745. to set you free

  746. from the power

  747. of sin.

  748. Christ raised

  749. from the grave

  750. to give you

  751. new life.

  752. How can you

  753. submit again

  754. to the powers

  755. of sin?

  756. You're free

  757. from it.

  758. His victory

  759. is your victory.

  760. His life

  761. is your life.

  762. His death

  763. to sin

  764. is your death

  765. to sin.

  766. If you are united

  767. to him by faith,

  768. everything

  769. he's earned

  770. is yours.

  771. Christian,

  772. I wonder

  773. if you realize,

  774. Christian,

  775. that you

  776. can walk

  777. in resurrection

  778. victory

  779. over sin

  780. right now.

  781. If you are

  782. in Christ,

  783. you can walk

  784. in resurrection

  785. victory

  786. over sin.

  787. This is

  788. incredible grace

  789. towards us

  790. who believe,

  791. isn't it?

  792. Do you realize

  793. that if you

  794. are in Christ,

  795. you have

  796. all the

  797. authority

  798. over sin

  799. that Christ

  800. himself has

  801. over sin.

  802. I remember

  803. when I first

  804. realized this,

  805. it was like,

  806. the lights

  807. went on.

  808. You're telling

  809. me I don't

  810. have to,

  811. I'm not

  812. controlled by

  813. this anymore.

  814. You're telling

  815. me I actually,

  816. I can have

  817. the freedom

  818. to resist

  819. this temptation?

  820. You're telling

  821. me I have

  822. a position

  823. of victory

  824. over sin?

  825. Paul says,

  826. yes,

  827. in Christ,

  828. sin doesn't

  829. rule you

  830. anymore.

  831. Yes,

  832. you can choose

  833. to slip

  834. those chains

  835. back on.

  836. Those chains

  837. leave grooves

  838. on our hearts

  839. and make it

  840. too easy

  841. to slip

  842. right back

  843. on.

  844. You can

  845. choose to

  846. slip them

  847. back on,

  848. but you

  849. don't have

  850. to.

  851. Christ

  852. has purchased

  853. freedom

  854. and victory

  855. for his

  856. people.

  857. One day,

  858. Christ will

  859. return or we

  860. will go to

  861. be with him

  862. and we'll

  863. be finally

  864. done with

  865. the fight,

  866. but until

  867. then,

  868. Christian,

  869. we fight

  870. from a

  871. position of

  872. victory over

  873. sin because

  874. of his

  875. victory at

  876. the cross

  877. in the

  878. empty tomb.

  879. So I want

  880. to close

  881. third point

  882. this morning,

  883. finally.

  884. I just want

  885. us to consider

  886. some ways

  887. practically we

  888. put this

  889. into practice.

  890. So third,

  891. let's see the

  892. resurrection of

  893. Jesus.

  894. Jesus,

  895. it gives us

  896. a new

  897. strategy.

  898. Let's talk

  899. strategy this

  900. morning a little

  901. bit.

  902. How do we

  903. actually put

  904. this into

  905. practice?

  906. What can

  907. we do

  908. tomorrow,

  909. this afternoon,

  910. to fight

  911. against sin

  912. and resurrection

  913. power?

  914. So let's read

  915. these final

  916. verses one more

  917. time and he

  918. gives us three

  919. keys here in

  920. these final

  921. verses for

  922. fighting sin

  923. and resurrection

  924. power.

  925. Paul says

  926. verse 11,

  927. in light of

  928. Jesus' death

  929. and resurrection,

  930. he says,

  931. so you also

  932. must consider

  933. yourselves dead

  934. to sin and

  935. alive to God

  936. in Christ Jesus.

  937. That's number

  938. one.

  939. Consider,

  940. consider,

  941. reckon

  942. yourself dead

  943. to sin and

  944. alive to God

  945. in Christ.

  946. The battle

  947. with sin,

  948. it often

  949. begins with

  950. the mind.

  951. So Paul

  952. says,

  953. fix your

  954. mind daily

  955. on the

  956. glory of

  957. God and

  958. the gospel

  959. of Christ.

  960. Remember,

  961. fix your

  962. mind daily

  963. on what that

  964. means for you

  965. as a Christian.

  966. I can think

  967. of no better

  968. strategy to

  969. give you this

  970. morning for

  971. fighting sin

  972. than to

  973. daily remember

  974. the gospel

  975. of Christ.

  976. Every single

  977. day,

  978. remember the

  979. gospel.

  980. gospel.

  981. We're six

  982. chapters into

  983. this book.

  984. I know we

  985. didn't cover the

  986. whole book this

  987. morning,

  988. but this is five

  989. chapters of

  990. gospel that's

  991. leading to this

  992. application this

  993. morning.

  994. Remember the

  995. bad news that

  996. yes,

  997. all have sinned

  998. and fallen short

  999. of the glory of

  1000. God.

  1001. Remember the bad

  1002. news that yes,

  1003. you are deserving

  1004. of the wrath of

  1005. God.

  1006. But remember and

  1007. praise God for the

  1008. righteousness of

  1009. God through faith

  1010. in Jesus Christ

  1011. for all who

  1012. believe.

  1013. Remember and

  1014. praise God that

  1015. you are justified

  1016. by his grace as

  1017. a gift through

  1018. the redemption

  1019. that is in

  1020. Christ Jesus,

  1021. whom God put

  1022. forward as a

  1023. propitiation by

  1024. his blood to be

  1025. received by faith.

  1026. Remember and

  1027. praise God that

  1028. Christ was

  1029. delivered up for

  1030. our trespasses and

  1031. raised for our

  1032. justification.

  1033. Remember and

  1034. praise God that

  1035. God, since we

  1036. have been justified

  1037. by faith, we

  1038. have peace with

  1039. God through our

  1040. Lord Jesus Christ.

  1041. We have access

  1042. into the grace in

  1043. which we stand.

  1044. Remember and

  1045. praise God that

  1046. God's love has

  1047. been poured out

  1048. into our hearts

  1049. through his Holy

  1050. Spirit who's been

  1051. given to us.

  1052. Remember the

  1053. gospel.

  1054. Remember who we

  1055. are in Christ

  1056. and who we are

  1057. because of Christ.

  1058. Remember daily

  1059. that Christ has

  1060. lived and died

  1061. and risen from

  1062. the grave in

  1063. victory over sin

  1064. and death and

  1065. so you by faith

  1066. in him are also

  1067. dead to sin and

  1068. alive to God in

  1069. Christ.

  1070. That's number one.

  1071. Fix this in your

  1072. mind.

  1073. Remember that's

  1074. number one.

  1075. Second, second

  1076. strategy.

  1077. Refuse.

  1078. Refuse.

  1079. as one who is

  1080. dead to sin and

  1081. alive to God.

  1082. Verse 12.

  1083. He says, let not

  1084. sin therefore reign

  1085. in your mortal

  1086. body.

  1087. Don't let it.

  1088. Let not sin

  1089. therefore reign in

  1090. your mortal body to

  1091. make you obey its

  1092. passions.

  1093. Your body is no

  1094. longer under sin's

  1095. dominion if you're in

  1096. Christ.

  1097. But that doesn't

  1098. mean that it won't

1099. try and take it back

  1100. under his control.

  1101. You know this.

  1102. Don't let it.

  1103. Let me ask you

  1104. something.

  1105. Imagine that you

  1106. were sitting at home

  1107. one night, sitting

  1108. there just relaxing,

  1109. watching TV, and you

  1110. look out the window

  1111. and you see somebody

  1112. pull up in your

  1113. driveway.

  1114. Now I already know

  1115. because I know you

  1116. guys, right?

1117. We live out here in

  1118. the country.

  1119. You're on itch.

  1120. All right?

  1121. You're ready.

  1122. You're alert.

  1123. But imagine you see

1124. this guy come up your

  1125. driveway.

  1126. He parks.

  1127. He turns off the

  1128. car.

  1129. He gets out.

1130. He comes right up to

  1131. the front door

  1132. uninvited, unannounced.

  1133. You think, okay, it

  1134. might be nothing.

  1135. Probably nothing to

  1136. worry about.

  1137. Maybe my wife made

  1138. an Amazon purchase

  1139. and he's coming to

  1140. drop something off.

  1141. That's usually what it

  1142. is.

  1143. But now imagine he

  1144. starts letting

  1145. himself in.

  1146. What are you

  1147. thinking now?

  1148. I know you guys,

  1149. again, because we're

  1150. here and you're in

  1151. your right mind,

  1152. you're probably

  1153. reaching for the

  1154. gun or reaching for

  1155. the telephone,

  1156. call the police,

  1157. but say for some

  1158. reason this particular

  1159. evening you are

  1160. feeling unusually

  1161. welcoming that night

1162. and so you let him

  1163. in.

  1164. He kicks off his

  1165. shoes, pushes you

  1166. aside, he goes and

  1167. sits in your chair.

  1168. He starts telling

  1169. you how he wants

  1170. the house set up.

  1171. He gives his order

  1172. to your wife for

  1173. dinner and then he

  1174. kisses her goodnight.

  1175. He starts to tell

1176. you, I used to live

  1177. in this house, this

  1178. was my home.

1179. I used to be the

  1180. king of this castle.

  1181. How would you

  1182. respond?

  1183. You would get that

  1184. guy out of there,

  1185. right?

  1186. Immediately.

  1187. He doesn't own the

  1188. home anymore.

  1189. Maybe he used to

  1190. take up residence

  1191. there, but now

  1192. that's your home.

  1193. You kick him out.

  1194. Paul says that is

  1195. exactly how we

  1196. ought to handle sin.

  1197. It used to reign

  1198. in your body, but

  1199. no more.

  1200. It doesn't belong

  1201. in your body

  1202. anymore.

  1203. If you are in

  1204. Christ, sin is an

  1205. unwelcome intruder

  1206. into Christ

  1207. occupied territory.

  1208. Christ reigns over

  1209. this body now,

  1210. not sin.

  1211. Chase it off the

  1212. porch.

  1213. Don't give it one

  1214. foot inside the

  1215. door.

  1216. You refuse it.

  1217. You reject it.

  1218. You stand your

  1219. ground.

  1220. You let it know

  1221. it's not welcome

  1222. here anymore.

  1223. Let not sin

  1224. therefore reign in

  1225. your mortal body to

  1226. make you obey its

  1227. passions.

  1228. It can't tell you

  1229. what to do anymore.

1230. You tell it to get

  1231. lost.

  1232. lost.

  1233. Which means,

  1234. Christian, the

  1235. moment it comes

  1236. creeping into your

  1237. mind, and by God's

  1238. grace you see it,

  1239. you recognize it for

  1240. what it is, the

  1241. moment it comes into

  1242. your mind, that

  1243. lustful desire,

  1244. that jealousy,

  1245. that anger,

  1246. that pride, that

  1247. selfishness, whatever

1248. it tends to be for you,

  1249. the moment you see

  1250. it, you say with

  1251. all the authority of

  1252. the risen Lord

  1253. Jesus, get out and

  1254. never come back.

  1255. I'm not serving you

  1256. anymore.

  1257. You don't own me

  1258. anymore.

  1259. The old me that

  1260. serves sin as a

  1261. slave is dead, and

  1262. the new me that

  1263. lives by faith in

  1264. Christ lives outside

  1265. of the dominion of

  1266. sin.

  1267. Refuse it.

  1268. And third, third

  1269. strategy, present.

  1270. Do not present your

  1271. members to sin as

  1272. instruments for

  1273. unrighteousness, but

  1274. present yourselves to

1275. God as those who have

  1276. been brought from death

  1277. to life, and your

  1278. members to God as

  1279. instruments for

  1280. righteousness.

1281. It is not enough to

  1282. just play defense.

  1283. Defense wins

  1284. championships.

  1285. But you've got to

1286. move the ball up the

  1287. field, right?

  1288. You have to play

  1289. offense.

  1290. Stop offering your

  1291. members to sin as

  1292. instruments for

  1293. unrighteousness.

  1294. But now, positively

  1295. speaking, he says,

  1296. now present yourselves

  1297. to God.

  1298. And you know, I

  1299. looked into this this

1300. week, and I've got to

  1301. admit I'm a little

  1302. confused by the way

  1303. it's translated here.

  1304. I don't know why it's

  1305. translated instruments.

  1306. Because that makes me

  1307. think of like a

  1308. piano.

  1309. Or a tool or

  1310. something.

  1311. But that's not what

  1312. the word means.

  1313. This word here for

  1314. instruments, it's

  1315. interesting.

1316. It only shows up six

  1317. times in the New

  1318. Testament.

  1319. Everywhere else it

  1320. shows up, you know

  1321. what it's translated?

  1322. It is not instruments.

  1323. It's translated

  1324. weapons.

  1325. Or armor, one time.

  1326. Armor.

  1327. War.

  1328. This is war language.

  1329. Do not present your

  1330. members as weapons of

1331. war used for evil, but

1332. rather lend yourself as a

1333. weapon in the hands of

  1334. almighty God, as weapons

  1335. of righteousness.

  1336. righteousness.

1337. Let's just do an exercise

  1338. real quick.

1339. Think with me just for a

  1340. minute about your last

  1341. week.

  1342. Sunday to Sunday.

  1343. Okay?

1344. All your time at work, all

1345. your time at home, all your

  1346. time in traffic.

  1347. Ask yourself, have I

1348. offered my mind this week

  1349. as a weapon for

  1350. unrighteousness?

1351. Or have I taken every

  1352. thought captive and made

  1353. it obedient to Christ?

  1354. How about our feet?

1355. Where did your feet take

  1356. you this week?

1357. Have we walked in the

1358. counsel of the wicked or

1359. stood in the way of

1360. sinners or sat in the

  1361. seat of scoffers?

1362. Or do we walk in newness

1363. of life going as the Lord

1364. leaves you in paths of

  1365. righteousness for his

  1366. name's sake?

  1367. How about your hands?

1368. Have you offered up your

  1369. hands as weapons for

  1370. unrighteousness to tear

1371. down and to destroy, to

1372. harm or to assault, to

  1373. desecrate your body?

1374. Or have they been offered

  1375. as weapons of

  1376. righteousness to build up

  1377. and to serve one

1378. another and to be used to

  1379. love your neighbor as

1380. yourself and used to help

  1381. and not to harm?

  1382. How about your mouth?

1383. Have we offered up our

  1384. mouth as weapons of

  1385. unrighteousness?

1386. Do we with the same

1387. mouth bless our Lord and

1388. Father and with it curse

1389. people who are made in the

  1390. likeness of God?

1391. Do we use it to gossip or

  1392. slander or insult?

1393. Or do we use it to to

1394. encourage one another and to

1395. build one another up in

1396. Christ and and to share the

1397. good news of the gospel with

1398. our our friends and our

  1399. neighbors and our co-workers

  1400. and our family members?

  1401. Paul says your body.

1402. The members of your body

1403. are our weapons in an

  1404. unseen spiritual war.

1405. They can be lent to the

1406. service of sin and fired

1407. off in the direction of

  1408. unrighteousness or now that

  1409. you are in Christ.

  1410. They can be used.

1411. They must be used as

  1412. weapons of righteousness in

1413. the service of the Lord.

  1414. Paul says, Christian, we

1415. must remember that we by the

1416. grace of God have been

  1417. rescued from the enemy's

  1418. belonging.

1419. You no longer belong to the

  1420. other side.

1421. Don't give them guns and

  1422. ammo.

  1423. Offer yourselves up.

  1424. Join the fight.

1425. as those who have been

  1426. brought from death to

  1427. life.

1428. This is the strategy church

  1429. Paul gives us.

  1430. Remember your identity in

  1431. Christ.

1432. Walk in his victory over

  1433. sin.

1434. Reckon yourself dead to sin

1435. and alive to God in

  1436. Christ.

1437. Refuse even one inch of

  1438. territory to the enemy's

1439. sin and join the fight.

  1440. Present your members as

  1441. weapons for righteousness

  1442. sake.

1443. The Christian life is a

  1444. war.

  1445. We all know it.

  1446. We all experience it.

1447. But we praise God that it

1448. is a war that has already

  1449. been won.

  1450. Thomas Watson, the great

  1451. English Puritan, he says,

1452. soon the battle will be

  1453. over.

1454. It will not be long now

1455. before the day will come

1456. when Satan will no longer

  1457. trouble us.

1458. There will be no more

  1459. domination, temptation,

  1460. accusation, or

  1461. confrontation.

1462. Our warfare will be over

  1463. and our commander, Jesus

1464. Christ, will call us away

  1465. from the battlefield to

  1466. receive the victor's

  1467. crown.

  1468. That day will come.

  1469. Soon and very soon,

  1470. church.

  1471. But until then,

  1472. Christian,

  1473. are we walking in

  1474. resurrection power

  1475. over sin?

  1476. Father, we praise you.

1477. We praise you for the

1478. victory Christ has won over

  1479. sin in the grave.

1480. We are helpless in this

  1481. fight apart from your

  1482. strength,

1483. apart from your spirit in

  1484. us.

1485. Lord, we are helpless to put

1486. sin to death, but because

1487. of Christ and in Christ and

1488. by the power of Christ,

1489. Lord, we have victory over

  1490. sin.

1491. So we pray we would walk in

  1492. it.

1493. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  1494. Amen.
