  1. Y'all didn't go to sleep, did you?

  2. Sometimes I keep going.

  3. We continue this morning in our series in the Psalms,

  4. and we've got just a few more here.

  5. Summer is drawing to a close.

  6. School is around the corner,

  7. but it has been exciting to see the truth of scriptures

  8. through the eyes of the psalmist.

  9. And this morning we will see through the eyes of David

  10. these truths this morning,

  11. and I hope that it will resonate with us,

  12. and I hope that God would touch our heart with these truths.

  13. And before we stand and read it,

  14. I would just say this,

  15. is that David this morning,

  16. as we read, or David in Psalm 28,

  17. which we were reading this morning,

  18. he indicates or he talks about

  19. or he distinguishes two different groups of people in this psalm.

  20. And as he talks about these two groups of people,

  21. he really makes a distinction

  22. that there's really one main thing

  23. that differentiates these two groups.

  24. So two groups of people,

  25. one main difference this morning.

  26. That's what I ask you to look for as we read it.

  27. I would ask you,

  28. in honor of the Word of God,

  29. would you stand this morning as we read Psalm 28?

  30. Psalm 28, a Psalm of David.

  31. To you, O Lord, I call my rock.

  32. Be not deaf to me,

  33. lest if you should be silent to me,

  34. I become like those who go down to the pit.

  35. Hear the voice of my plea for mercy

  36. when I cry to you for help.

  37. When I lift up my hands

  38. towards your most holy sanctuary,

  39. do not drag me off with the wicked,

  40. with the workers of evil

  41. who speak peace with their neighbors

  42. while evil is in their hearts.

  43. Give to them according to their work

  44. and according to the evil of their deeds.

  45. Give to them according to the work of their hands.

  46. Render them their due reward

  47. because they do not regard the work of the Lord

  48. or the work of His hands.

  49. He will tear them down

  50. and build them up no more.

  51. Blessed be the Lord,

  52. for He has heard the voice of my plea for mercy.

  53. The Lord is my strength and my shield.

  54. In Him my heart trusts and I am helped.

  55. My heart greatly rejoices.

  56. And with my song I give thanks to Him.

  57. The Lord is the strength of His people.

  58. He is the saving refuge of His anointed.

  59. Oh, save your people

  60. and bless your heritage.

  61. Be their shepherd and carry them forever.

  62. God, we are grateful for this truth,

  63. these truths and this psalm

  64. and the reality of your mercy

  65. and how great it is that you would save.

  66. And so God, this morning,

  67. would you open our ears

  68. that we might hear spiritually?

  69. Would you open our hearts

  70. that we might receive

  71. the message you have for us this morning?

  72. In this I pray in Christ's name.

  73. Amen.

  74. You can have a seat.

  75. Did you notice the two groups of people

  76. that David draws our attention to this morning?

  77. Even in verse 1,

  78. we see him talking about

  79. a group of people.

  80. In verse 1, he says,

  81. those who go down to the pit.

  82. Those who go down to the pit.

  83. Who are those?

  84. Who are the ones

  85. that go down to the pit?

  86. Well, in verse 3,

  87. he further explains who they are.

  88. Verse 3 says,

  89. do not drag me off with the wicked.

  90. It's the wicked,

  91. this group of people

  92. that are categorized as wicked.

  93. And David says that their destination

  94. is the pit,

  95. that they will be dragged off to the pit.

  96. And so this morning,

  97. as we look at these two groups of people,

  98. I want to look at three different aspects

  99. of both of these groups.

  100. Three aspects of both of these groups.

  101. I haven't even shown you,

  102. or we haven't talked yet

  103. about that second group,

  104. but I will draw your attention

  105. to verse 9,

  106. and we'll see exactly

  107. who the second group of people is.

  108. David says,

  109. oh, save your people,

  110. the people of God.

  111. So we have these two categories,

  112. this category of the wicked

  113. and this category of the people of God.

  114. Totally different spectrum.

  115. And what we're going to look at

  116. in this psalm this morning

  117. as we hear what David says

  118. about these two groups of people,

  119. you're going to see a great division.

  120. But really,

  121. there's one main distinguishing truth

  122. that separates these two groups of people.

  123. Now, it plays itself out very uniquely,

  124. but really there's one group,

  125. and one main truth,

  126. we've heard it this morning already,

  127. read when Dick was up here,

  128. and we'll talk about that as we go forward.

  129. First this,

  130. what is the destination of the wicked?

  131. The destination of the wicked.

  132. Well, we've already made this point

  133. that the destination of the wicked is the pit.

  134. Well, what does the pit refer to?

  135. You know,

  136. we would,

  137. in prayer sometimes,

  138. talk about the pit.

  139. We would talk about the destination

  140. as being hell.

  141. You know,

  142. he doesn't amplify,

  143. doesn't talk much about what it is,

  144. but he does say that

  145. the wicked go down to this place,

  146. the pit.

  147. They're dragged off,

  148. in verse 3,

  149. to this place called the pit.

  150. And so it begs the question,

  151. David,

  152. what are you talking about?

  153. You know,

  154. we probably already know,

  155. because we,

  156. many of us have read widely in the scriptures,

  157. I would refer to

  158. what Paul says,

  159. Apostle Paul,

  160. to the church in Thessalonica.

  161. He talks about the destination of the wicked.

  162. And here's what he says,

  163. reading in 2 Thessalonians,

  164. it says this,

  165. and he's talking to this church,

  166. these Thessalonians,

  167. who are being heavily persecuted.

  168. And he's encouraging them.

  169. He talks about their suffering,

  170. and he says this,

  171. since indeed God considers it just

  172. to repay with affliction

  173. those who afflict you,

  174. and to grant relief to you

  175. who are afflicted,

  176. as well as to us,

  177. when the Lord Jesus

  178. is revealed from heaven

  179. with his mighty angels,

  180. in flaming fire,

  181. inflicting vengeance

  182. on those who do not know God,

  183. and on those who do not obey

  184. the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  185. And here,

  186. in verse 9,

  187. he shares the destination.

  188. He says this,

  189. they will suffer the punishment

  190. of eternal destruction

  191. away from the presence of the Lord

  192. and from the glory of his might.

  193. They will suffer the punishment

  194. of eternal destruction

  195. away from the presence of the Lord.

  196. Does that strike you?

  197. Can you imagine

  198. what that actually is like?

  199. That there's no grace at all.

  200. You know that all of us

  201. experience the common grace of God?

  202. We all experience the blessings of God.

  203. All of mankind experiences

  204. the common blessings

  205. that God gives to all of us.

  206. But there's coming a day

  207. for the wicked

  208. when they will no longer

  209. experience the grace of God.

  210. In any respect,

  211. they'll no longer

  212. be in his presence.

  213. They'll be eternally

  214. separated from him.

  215. If you remove all goodness,

  216. which God is a source of good,

  217. from their lives,

  218. from the life of anyone,

  219. if you removed all goodness,

  220. what do we have left?

  221. We would probably use the term hell.

  222. And we could read in Revelation,

  223. the book of Revelation,

  224. when it talks about in symbolism,

  225. the beast and the harlot

  226. and the dragon,

  227. when they are removed,

  228. when they are ultimately destroyed.

  229. You remember what Revelation says?

  230. It says they will be cast

  231. into the lake of fire.

  232. This place where worm does not die

  233. is what the scriptures talk about.

  234. This place of unending pain.

  235. And that's the destination

  236. of the wicked.

  237. But you know,

  238. it doesn't have to be so.

  239. Doesn't God offer,

  240. doesn't he offer salvation

  241. to any who would come to him?

  242. This extension of his grace to all

  243. is open to all.

  244. But you know,

  245. it's not unjust what God is saying here.

  246. It's not unjust how David is pointing us

  247. to the destination of the wicked.

  248. The second point is this.

  249. Look at their deeds.

  250. If you look at the deeds of the wicked,

  251. then we would say it's just,

  252. it's right that the holy God

  253. would punish,

  254. would judge

  255. based on their deeds.

  256. And what do you see here in verse 3?

  257. They're workers of evil.

  258. They speak peace.

  259. In other words,

  260. they say something that sounds very

  261. gentle,

  262. very loving,

  263. very peace-filled,

  264. and yet,

  265. even when they speak it,

  266. there's evil in their hearts.

  267. They're quick to deceive.

  268. He talks about in verse 4

  269. that their deeds are evil.

  270. And he also says

  271. the works of their hands are evil.

  272. And then he goes on to say,

  273. God,

  274. render to them their due reward.

  275. So I ask the question of us,

  276. church,

  277. is it right

  278. that God would punish eternally

  279. those who

  280. walk

  281. in these evil ways,

  282. those who choose

  283. what is evil?

  284. Those who would be classified

  285. as wicked.

  286. Is it right that God would punish?

  287. The answer,

  288. biblically speaking,

  289. is absolutely.

  290. We don't understand

  291. the great holiness of God.

  292. We understand it cognitively,

  293. and we've embraced it somewhat,

  294. but it's far greater,

  295. I think,

  296. than we can fathom.

  297. But I want you to see

  298. that their destination

  299. is eternal separation.

  300. Why?

  301. Because their deeds.

  302. Because their deeds are evil.

  303. They do not honor God in any way.

  304. They do not do what is righteous.

  305. They do not do what is loving.

  306. Even what appears to be loving

  307. is backed up in their heart

  308. with deception.

  309. So the way that they would be

  310. categorized,

  311. this group,

  312. is wicked.

  313. And so their destination

  314. is eternal separation.

  315. Because their deeds

  316. are wicked,

  317. why are their deeds wicked?

  318. Why would they walk

  319. in such a way?

  320. Why would they choose

  321. to

  322. mistreat

  323. and dishonor

  324. and deceive

  325. and hurt

  326. and wound

  327. and kill?

  328. Why?

  329. Well,

  330. the Word of God says why.

  331. Because their hearts,

  332. their hearts

  333. are far away from God.

  334. Their hearts

  335. are full of evil.

  336. You see it in verse 3?

  337. While evil

  338. is in their hearts,

  339. their hearts

  340. are full of evil.

  341. people.

  342. You know,

  343. in verse 5,

  344. I think this is the difference

  345. between these two groups

  346. of people.

  347. We'll talk more deeply

  348. about this

  349. as we look at it.

  350. But in verse 5,

  351. listen to what David says

  352. about this group

  353. called the wicked.

  354. He says this,

  355. they do not regard

  356. the works

  357. of the Lord

  358. or the works

  359. of His hand.

  360. They do not regard.

  361. They do not look.

  362. They do not praise.

  363. They do not notice.

  364. They do not care.

  365. All that the Lord

  366. has done

  367. and all of His grace

  368. that has been poured out

  369. on mankind,

  370. they do not care.

  371. They do not regard it.

  372. Why?

  373. Because their hearts

  374. are evil.

  375. Though God

  376. proclaims

  377. His greatness

  378. in all of His creation.

  379. When y'all look

  380. at what is created,

  381. do you marvel?

  382. Do you find yourself

  383. going,

  384. wow,

  385. wow.

  386. You know,

  387. I think when I was young

  388. and first in the faith,

  389. even before I was a Christian,

  390. I still marveled

  391. at the complexity of things.

  392. I think I'm just wired that way.

  393. But once I came

  394. into the kingdom,

  395. it all tied together

  396. as this is

  397. the handiwork of God.

  398. And so,

  399. things that I've noticed

  400. under a microscope,

  401. things that I've noticed

  402. on top of a mountain

  403. and looking out

  404. and seeing,

  405. it just makes us

  406. worship,

  407. doesn't it?

  408. It amazes.

  409. And yet,

  410. those who are wicked

  411. is as if they don't

  412. even notice.

  413. There's no worship,

  414. no praise,

  415. no real interest

  416. in their hearts.

  417. Their hearts

  418. do not

  419. regard

  420. the Lord.

  421. Let me ask this.

  422. Do you see yourself

  423. in the picture

  424. of this group of people,

  425. these wicked?

  426. You know,

  427. for those of us

  428. who've been changed,

  429. for those of us

  430. who've been born again,

  431. for those of us

  432. who've been drawn

  433. into His kingdom,

  434. for those of us

  435. that call ourselves

  436. and really genuinely

  437. are born again Christians,

  438. you know,

  439. it's different,

  440. isn't it?

  441. We say,

  442. no, no, no,

  443. we're not like that.

  444. We're not wicked.

  445. We don't have evil

  446. in our heart.

  447. But let me ask this.

  448. Was there a time

  449. when you did?

  450. You know,

  451. we,

  452. even before we accepted

  453. Christ as Lord and Savior

  454. and understood our need

  455. and our sin

  456. and our separation

  457. from the Holy God,

  458. our rebellion,

  459. even before

  460. we came into the kingdom,

  461. you know,

  462. we weren't as bad

  463. as we could have been.

  464. it's possible

  465. to be more evil,

  466. but you know what

  467. the Word of God says?

  468. It says there's nothing

  469. good in us

  470. before Christ.

  471. And I wonder

  472. if we see ourselves

  473. in the rebellion

  474. that we used to be in

  475. when we were in Adam.

  476. So I ask this question

  477. and you've heard it

  478. if you've been around

  479. this church for long,

  480. you've been in Sunday school

  481. or even from the pulpit,

  482. I've mentioned this,

  483. the natural state of man.

  484. What is the natural state of man?

  485. You know,

  486. there's four options here

  487. and I think there's

  488. a lot of confusion

  489. even in the hearts

  490. and understanding

  491. and the minds of Christians.

  492. They don't really know

  493. how to answer this question.

  494. What is the natural state of man?

  495. Well, he could be,

  496. man could be 100% good

  497. in everything he does,

  498. in every way,

  499. in every thought,

  500. in every desire.

  501. We would quickly say,

  502. well, that's not me.

  503. But some say,

  504. we are,

  505. as humans,

  506. we're mostly good

  507. with a little bit of bad.

  508. And a lot of people

  509. would land there.

  510. We're mostly good

  511. with a little bit of bad.

  512. Some would go on

  513. to say,

  514. no, no, no,

  515. that's not quite right.

  516. What I find is

  517. we're mostly bad,

  518. but there's good

  519. in everybody.

  520. There's at least

  521. some good

  522. in everybody.

  523. And then some

  524. would go on

  525. to make the claim

  526. that no, no, no,

  527. that's not right either.

  528. There's nothing good in us.

  529. We're all bad.

  530. So you see

  531. the four options here?

  532. Either we're all good,

  533. mostly good

  534. with a little bad,

  535. mostly bad

  536. with a little good,

  537. or we're all bad,

  538. which is true.

  539. Well,

  540. let's let the Word of God

  541. declare it.

  542. Let's let the Word of God

  543. answer this question

  544. so that we recognize

  545. the truth.

  546. Listen to

  547. this section of Scripture

  548. that was read

  549. this morning by Dick.

  550. Did y'all catch

  551. who we used to be?

  552. Now,

  553. Paul is saying this

  554. about all of mankind.

  555. All of mankind.

  556. He says this.

  557. He said,

  558. you were dead,

  559. spiritually dead.

  560. Why?

  561. Because of your trespasses

  562. and sins

  563. in which you once walked.

  564. Following the course

  565. of this world,

  566. following the devil,

  567. the prince of the power

  568. of the air,

  569. the spirit that is now

  570. still working

  571. in the sons of disobedience,

  572. those who have not

  573. acknowledged God.

  574. He's still very actively

  575. at work in the hearts

  576. of them.

  577. Among whom

  578. we all once lived

  579. in the passions

  580. of our flesh

  581. carrying out the desires

  582. of the body

  583. and the mind

  584. and were by nature

  585. children of wrath.

  586. Do you embrace

  587. that as true for you?

  588. If that is true,

  589. which one of those

  590. four seems to be true?

  591. We once walked

  592. following the course

  593. of this world.

  594. We were by nature

  595. children of wrath.

  596. Let's look at another place

  597. in the book of Romans,

  598. which is Paul's

  599. explanation for this

  600. very same thing.

  601. He says,

  602. the Jews,

  603. he's arguing

  604. with the Jews

  605. to say,

  606. hey,

  607. you're no better

  608. than the Gentiles.

  609. Why do you think

  610. that your nationality

  611. is going to save you?

  612. Just because you're a Jew

  613. and you were a part

  614. of the tribe

  615. of Israel,

  616. it doesn't mean

  617. that you immediately

  618. get a free ticket

  619. to heaven.

  620. He says,

  621. no, no, no.

  622. Listen to what

  623. the word of God

  624. says in Psalm 14

  625. and Psalm 53,

  626. which is what

  627. David is quoting here.

  628. David says this,

  629. are we Jews

  630. any better off?

  631. No,

  632. not at all.

  633. For we have

  634. already charged

  635. that all,

  636. both Jews

  637. and Greeks

  638. are under sin

  639. as it is written.

  640. None is righteous.

  641. No,

  642. not one,

  643. not one,

  644. not one person

  645. on the face

  646. of the planet

  647. is righteous.

  648. No one seeks

  649. for God.

  650. All have turned aside.

  651. Together they have

  652. become worthless

  653. without worth.

  654. No one does good,

  655. not even one.

  656. He goes on to say,

  657. their throat

  658. is an open grave.

  659. Who's he talking about?

  660. All of mankind.

  661. All of mankind.

  662. Their throat

  663. is an open grave.

  664. They use their tongue

  665. to deceive.

  666. The venom

  667. of asps,

  668. snakes,

  669. is under their lips.

  670. Their mouth

  671. is full of curses

  672. and bitterness.

  673. Their feet

  674. are swift

  675. to shed blood.

  676. In their path

  677. are ruin

  678. and misery.

  679. In the way

  680. of peace

  681. they have not known.

  682. There is no fear

  683. of God

  684. before their eyes.

  685. And we turn back

  686. to this psalm

  687. and how similar

  688. does this sound

  689. when David says

  690. they do not

  691. regard the work

  692. of the Lord

  693. or the work

  694. of his hands.

  695. They don't even

  696. regard it.

  697. You know,

  698. unless God

  699. does a work

  700. in the heart

  701. of a person,

  702. a man or a woman,

  703. he will be

  704. in this camp

  705. of the wicked.

  706. You know there's

  707. only two camps?

  708. David is talking

  709. about the only

  710. two camps

  711. there are.

  712. those who are wicked

  713. and those

  714. who are his.

  715. And how is it

  716. that a person

  717. goes from being wicked

  718. to being

  719. not wicked?

  720. From being wicked

  721. and separated

  722. from God

  723. with an eternal

  724. destination,

  725. eternally separated

  726. from God

  727. to the point

  728. where they're

  729. changed men.

  730. How?

  731. Well,

  732. David

  733. shows that.

  734. This morning

  735. in this psalm,

  736. you'll see

  737. that David

  738. is an individual

  739. that's included

  740. in this grouping

  741. of people

  742. called God's people,

  743. God's children.

  744. And David

  745. represents

  746. the group

  747. of God's people.

  748. He's an example.

  749. He's one of

  750. those who

  751. has been changed.

  752. And in what way

  753. was he changed?

  754. It's his heart.

  755. His heart

  756. has been changed.

  757. So,

  758. I hope you

  759. heard the point

  760. that I was trying

  761. to make

  762. that you know

  763. of those four choices,

  764. you know where we land,

  765. there's none good,

  766. not one.

  767. We have no good

  768. in us,

  769. not any.

  770. There's not partly

  771. good and some bad,

  772. it's all bad.

  773. There's no righteousness

  774. in us.

  775. How is a man

  776. who has no righteousness,

  777. who's an enemy

  778. of God,

  779. who is born wicked,

  780. how is it

  781. that he's going

  782. to be included

  783. in this grouping

  784. of people

  785. called God's people?

  786. Well,

  787. it's the work

  788. of God,

  789. right?

  790. It's the work

  791. of God

  792. on the heart

  793. of a man.

  794. It's heart change.

  795. And so,

  796. I ask you the question,

  797. how is it

  798. that a heart

  799. is changed?

  800. Well,

  801. obviously,

  802. we'd say

  803. it's the power

  804. of God.

  805. Why some

  806. and why not others?

  807. Let me

  808. flip over,

  809. you don't have

  810. to flip,

  811. but I'm going

  812. to read

  813. a couple

  814. of verses

  815. out of the

  816. book of John.

  817. So,

  818. Apostle John

  819. is sharing

  820. about this

  821. truth.

  822. How is it

  823. that a man

  824. goes from

  825. the grouping

  826. of the wicked

  827. and he's

  828. transferred

  829. into the group

  830. that is the

  831. people of God?

  832. How?

  833. Here's what

  834. John says.

  835. He says,

  836. you know

  837. that no one

  838. can come to me,

  839. this is Jesus

  840. speaking,

  841. no one can

  842. come to me

  843. unless the

  844. Father who sent

  845. me draws him.

  846. Let me say it

  847. again,

  848. I messed that

  849. up.

  850. No one

  851. can come

  852. to me,

  853. Jesus,

  854. unless the

  855. Father God

  856. who sent

  857. me draws him.

  858. No one

  859. can come

  860. unless the

  861. Father draws

  862. him.

  863. Again,

  864. in verse

  865. 65,

  866. it says this,

  867. and he

  868. said,

  869. this is why

  870. I told you

  871. that no one

  872. can come to

  873. me unless

  874. it is granted

  875. him by the

  876. Father.

  877. You know,

  878. we read

  879. that salvation

  880. is not

  881. the result

  882. of our works.

  883. You know,

  884. we read it

  885. in Ephesians

  886. 2 earlier.

  887. Did you hear

  888. it?

  889. It's by grace

  890. you're saved,

  891. by faith,

  892. not according

  893. to your works.

  894. It's not as

  895. if you can

  896. do all

  897. these good

  898. things and

  899. earn your

  900. way into

  901. heaven.

  902. Do you know

  903. that's not

  904. possible?

  905. Because the

  906. standard is

  907. perfection.

  908. That would

  909. mean you

  910. never sinned

  911. ever even

  912. once in

  913. your life.

  914. How many

  915. times did

  916. Adam have

  917. to sin

  918. before he

  919. had to

  920. exit the

  921. garden?

  922. Do you

  923. realize the

  924. holiness of

  925. God demands

  926. perfection?

  927. And he

  928. would have

  929. had to

  930. have been

  931. absolutely

  932. perfect.

  933. He took

  934. from the

  935. fruit of

  936. the tree

  937. that he

  938. was not

  939. supposed to

  940. touch and

  941. then what

  942. do you have

  943. to do?

  944. You've got to

  945. leave.

  946. You've got to

  947. leave.

  948. And they put

  949. an angel

  950. with a flame

  951. and sword

  952. at the gate

  953. of the garden

  954. and said,

  955. don't you

  956. come back.

  957. If you

  958. come back

  959. you'll die.

  960. Because your

  961. sin can't be

  962. in the presence

  963. of a holy

  964. God.

  965. And here

  966. it is

  967. that's not

  968. based on

  969. our works

  970. and what

  971. we do

  972. is based

  973. on the

  974. drawing

  975. of God.

  976. Even when

  977. we were

  978. dead and

  979. our

  980. trespasses

  981. isn't

  982. God,

  983. but God,

  984. God gave

  985. us life.

  986. Life

  987. comes from

  988. God.

  989. This eternal

  990. life,

  991. a changed

  992. spirit,

  993. a changed

  994. heart.

  995. How does

  996. it happen?

  997. It's the

  998. work of

  999. God.

  1000. It's the

  1001. work of

  1002. the Holy

  1003. Spirit that

  1004. draws us

  1005. to God,

  1006. that makes

  1007. us aware

  1008. of his

  1009. holiness,

  1010. that makes

  1011. us aware

  1012. of our

  1013. sin,

  1014. and causes

  1015. us,

  1016. gives us

  1017. the motivation

  1018. to do what

  1019. David says

  1020. right here.

  1021. Look,

  1022. do you see

  1023. what David

  1024. did?

  1025. To you,

  1026. O Lord,

  1027. I call.

  1028. And in

  1029. verse 2,

  1030. I cry to

  1031. you for

  1032. help.

  1033. Do you

  1034. see the

  1035. difference

  1036. between the

  1037. wicked who

  1038. don't even

  1039. regard God

  1040. or the

  1041. works of

  1042. his hands?

  1043. And here's

  1044. David saying,

  1045. God,

  1046. I see you,

  1047. I know you,

  1048. and I desire

  1049. you,

  1050. and I call

  1051. to you,

  1052. God,

  1053. my rock.

  1054. It's because

  1055. of you that

  1056. I have any

  1057. hope.

  1058. It's because

  1059. of you that

  1060. I have any

  1061. joy.

  1062. It's because

  1063. of you that

  1064. my life has

  1065. been changed.

  1066. There is a

  1067. desire that's

  1068. spilling out of

  1069. the heart of

  1070. David here.

  1071. He calls to

  1072. the Lord,

  1073. be not deaf to

  1074. me,

  1075. God,

  1076. I desire

  1077. to hear

  1078. from you.

  1079. Do you

  1080. know that

  1081. the wicked

  1082. don't desire

  1083. to hear

  1084. from him?

  1085. No interest.

  1086. No interest.

  1087. Does God,

  1088. is God able

  1089. to hear from

  1090. the wicked?

  1091. Let me just

  1092. say this,

  1093. if there's a

  1094. person on

  1095. the planet

  1096. that's in the

  1097. camp of the

  1098. wicked that

  1099. says,

  1100. God,

  1101. I see my

  1102. sin,

  1103. I'm sick

  1104. over my

  1105. sin,

  1106. God,

  1107. would you

  1108. help me?

  1109. Do you think

  1110. God hears

  1111. that?

  1112. Listen,

  1113. you know

  1114. what,

  1115. how do you

  1116. explain that?

  1117. That's a

  1118. heart that

  1119. is humbled,

  1120. that's a

  1121. heart that

  1122. is reaching

  1123. out to

  1124. God,

  1125. that's a

  1126. heart that

  1127. is genuine

  1128. and says,

  1129. God,

  1130. help me.

  1131. It's not

  1132. some insurance

  1133. policy prayer.

  1134. All right,

  1135. just in case,

  1136. I want to

  1137. make sure I

  1138. make it to

  1139. heaven,

  1140. what do I

  1141. need to

  1142. say?

  1143. Oh,

  1144. yeah,

  1145. okay,

  1146. can you help

  1147. me?

  1148. What words

  1149. do I need

  1150. to use?

  1151. It's like a

  1152. formula.

  1153. It's like an

  1154. insurance policy.

  1155. Well,

  1156. I've done

  1157. that.

  1158. All right,

  1159. I went to

  1160. church 12

  1161. times.

  1162. Man,

  1163. I've got to

  1164. be good

  1165. now.

  1166. I'm good.

  1167. You know,

  1168. that is not

  1169. a heart that's

  1170. reaching out to

  1171. God and

  1172. saying,

  1173. help me,

  1174. God.

  1175. But look at

  1176. David.

  1177. He's calling

  1178. out to God.

  1179. He's crying

  1180. out to God.

  1181. He's lifting

  1182. up his hands

  1183. in verse 3

  1184. toward the

  1185. most holy

  1186. sanctuary.

  1187. So we've

  1188. looked at the

  1189. three aspects

  1190. of those who

  1191. are wicked,

  1192. their destination,

  1193. their deeds,

  1194. and their

  1195. heart.

  1196. And now

  1197. what we see

  1198. in the life

  1199. of God's

  1200. children is

  1201. a heart

  1202. that has

  1203. been changed.

  1204. A heart

  1205. that is

  1206. soft to

  1207. God,

  1208. a heart

  1209. that desires

  1210. God,

  1211. a heart

  1212. that calls

  1213. out to

  1214. God,

  1215. a heart

  1216. that cries

  1217. to God

  1218. for help,

  1219. a heart

  1220. that yields

  1221. to the

  1222. holiness

  1223. of God,

  1224. who lifts

  1225. up his

  1226. hands and

  1227. said,

  1228. praise you,

  1229. Lord,

  1230. praise you,

  1231. Lord.

  1232. I've come

  1233. to see

  1234. how great

  1235. you are.

  1236. Let me

  1237. ask you,

  1238. what is

  1239. your heart

  1240. like?

  1241. It's my

  1242. hope that

  1243. everyone sitting

  1244. in here is a

  1245. born-again

  1246. believer,

  1247. that you're

  1248. saved,

  1249. that you

  1250. know him,

  1251. and that your

  1252. heart has

  1253. been changed

  1254. from a

  1255. heart of

  1256. stone to

  1257. a heart

  1258. of flesh,

  1259. from a

  1260. hard heart

  1261. to a tender

  1262. heart.

  1263. From a

  1264. heart that

  1265. does not

  1266. regard God

  1267. in any

  1268. way to a

  1269. heart that

  1270. says,

  1271. I long

  1272. for you.

  1273. For those

  1274. of us who

  1275. have come

  1276. into the

  1277. kingdom,

  1278. do y'all

  1279. know the

  1280. change?

  1281. Have y'all

  1282. come to

  1283. recognize how

  1284. different we

  1285. are?

  1286. When God

  1287. gives us a

  1288. new heart

  1289. and changes

  1290. us,

  1291. it is like,

  1292. it doesn't

  1293. happen,

  1294. the night and

  1295. day difference

  1296. doesn't happen,

  1297. it kind of

  1298. grows over

  1299. time.

  1300. But the

  1301. things that we

  1302. used to love

  1303. and long

  1304. for and do

  1305. are so

  1306. different now

  1307. that we're in

  1308. the kingdom,

  1309. the things that

  1310. we long for

  1311. and desire

  1312. are different.

  1313. And when we

  1314. choose what

  1315. we used to

  1316. like,

  1317. there's a

  1318. conviction,

  1319. there's a

  1320. sickness,

  1321. there's a

  1322. grief in

  1323. our heart.

  1324. We're different

  1325. people,

  1326. we've been

  1327. born again.

  1328. And so I'm

  1329. asking if

  1330. there's someone

  1331. here who is

  1332. still investigating

  1333. Christianity,

  1334. that still

  1335. doesn't really

  1336. know what it

  1337. means to be

  1338. saved.

  1339. God,

  1340. listen,

  1341. the difference

  1342. is this,

  1343. it's a heart

  1344. that says,

  1345. God,

  1346. help me.

  1347. God,

  1348. I want

  1349. you,

  1350. I need

  1351. you.

  1352. You know,

  1353. God always

  1354. hears that,

  1355. he always,

  1356. always,

  1357. always hears

  1358. a genuine

  1359. heart that

  1360. reaches up.

  1361. And you

  1362. know what,

  1363. it doesn't

  1364. take magic

  1365. words,

  1366. it doesn't

  1367. take correct

  1368. phrases,

  1369. it doesn't

  1370. take a lot

  1371. of talking,

  1372. you know

  1373. what it

  1374. takes?

  1375. A heart

  1376. that says,

  1377. I need

  1378. you.

  1379. God,

  1380. I want

  1381. you.

  1382. Would you

  1383. change my

  1384. life?

  1385. Would you

  1386. call,

  1387. if you're

  1388. not sure,

  1389. or if you

  1390. maybe are

  1391. sure that

  1392. you're not

  1393. in the

  1394. kingdom,

  1395. that you're

  1396. just kind

  1397. of on the

  1398. edges of

  1399. this thing

  1400. trying to

  1401. figure out

  1402. what in

  1403. the world

  1404. is really

  1405. true here,

  1406. do you

  1407. have a

  1408. desire to

  1409. call out

  1410. to him

  1411. and cry

  1412. out to

  1413. him?

  1414. I hope

  1415. you do.

  1416. And I'm

  1417. telling you,

  1418. if you

  1419. do,

  1420. he will

  1421. hear you.

  1422. And if

  1423. you're

  1424. genuinely

  1425. sick over

  1426. your own

  1427. sin and

  1428. you recognize

  1429. that you

  1430. were rebellious

  1431. towards him,

  1432. you know

  1433. that if

  1434. you'll say,

  1435. God,

  1436. forgive me,

  1437. you know

  1438. what the

  1439. word of

  1440. God declares?

  1441. From

  1442. someone who

  1443. from the

  1444. heart says,

  1445. forgive me,

  1446. he says,

  1447. as far as

  1448. the east

  1449. is from

  1450. the west,

  1451. I'll remove

  1452. your sin

  1453. from you.

  1454. Based on

  1455. the work

  1456. of Jesus

  1457. Christ on

  1458. the cross.

  1459. David is

  1460. a man

  1461. whose heart

  1462. has been

  1463. changed.

  1464. And do

  1465. you see

  1466. how it

  1467. changes

  1468. his deeds?

  1469. Again,

  1470. these three

  1471. aspects,

  1472. the destination,

  1473. the deeds,

  1474. and the

  1475. heart.

  1476. The heart

  1477. of David

  1478. has been

  1479. changed.

  1480. You know,

  1481. it's fun

  1482. when we

  1483. read the

  1484. scriptures

  1485. and we

  1486. ponder

  1487. the life

  1488. of David

  1489. who we've

  1490. talked about

  1491. a lot.

  1492. We'll

  1493. talk about

  1494. more.

  1495. But David

  1496. is a

  1497. shepherd

  1498. who has

  1499. an instrument

  1500. in his

  1501. hands.

  1502. He's

  1503. worshiping

  1504. God

  1505. with no

  1506. one

  1507. around.

  1508. You know,

  1509. there's

  1510. something

  1511. important

  1512. to see

  1513. here,

  1514. is that

  1515. those whose

  1516. hearts

  1517. have changed

  1518. desire to

  1519. worship,

  1520. and the

  1521. heart of

  1522. David was

  1523. changed.

  1524. I don't

  1525. know when.

  1526. The word

  1527. of God

  1528. doesn't

  1529. declare

  1530. when,

  1531. but we

  1532. see the

  1533. deeds of

  1534. David.

  1535. We see

  1536. that with

  1537. the changed

  1538. heart,

  1539. that

  1540. there's

  1541. worship

  1542. that

  1543. happens.

  1544. Genuine,

  1545. heartfelt,

  1546. real

  1547. worship.

  1548. A

  1549. recognition

  1550. of his

  1551. holiness

  1552. and a

  1553. lifting up

  1554. hands.

  1555. Wow.

  1556. And that's

  1557. what we

  1558. talked about

  1559. earlier.

  1560. Look at

  1561. creation.

  1562. For those

  1563. who are in

  1564. the kingdom,

  1565. how can

  1566. you look

  1567. and not

  1568. say,

  1569. wow,

  1570. look at

  1571. the

  1572. incredible

  1573. beauty

  1574. of what

  1575. God has

  1576. made,

  1577. and the

  1578. creativeness

  1579. of what

  1580. he's made,

  1581. and the

  1582. marvel of

  1583. all these

  1584. things that

  1585. just shout

  1586. beauty,

  1587. and shout

  1588. the beauty

  1589. of God.

  1590. And it

  1591. causes us

  1592. to praise

  1593. as Christians.

  1594. Do you,

  1595. I mean,

  1596. how can you

  1597. go to the

  1598. mountains and

  1599. see the

  1600. beautiful

  1601. landscapes and

  1602. not go,

  1603. wow?

  1604. Or how do

  1605. you go to

  1606. the ocean and

  1607. see the

  1608. power of

  1609. the ocean,

  1610. and the

  1611. beauty of

  1612. the ocean,

  1613. the vastness

  1614. of the ocean,

  1615. not say,

  1616. wow?

  1617. Or how do

  1618. you take a

  1619. microscope and

  1620. look at one

  1621. drop of water

  1622. and see all

  1623. the life that's

  1624. teeming in

  1625. there and

  1626. not say,

  1627. wow?

  1628. It's a

  1629. changed heart.

  1630. But look at

  1631. his deeds.

  1632. Here,

  1633. David doesn't

  1634. go into deeds

  1635. all that much

  1636. in this

  1637. psalm.

  1638. But if you

  1639. turn back

  1640. to Psalm

  1641. 26,

  1642. he speaks a

  1643. little more

  1644. about that.

  1645. In verse

  1646. 3 he says,

  1647. I walk in

  1648. your faithfulness.

  1649. I do not

  1650. sit with men

  1651. of falsehood,

  1652. nor do I

  1653. consort with

  1654. hypocrites.

  1655. I hate the

  1656. assembly of

  1657. evildoers.

  1658. I will not

  1659. sit with

  1660. the wicked.

  1661. Do you

  1662. see the

  1663. division here?

  1664. Do you

  1665. see the

  1666. difference?

  1667. David,

  1668. who at

  1669. one time

  1670. in his

  1671. life,

  1672. don't know

  1673. when he

  1674. changed,

  1675. his heart

  1676. was changed,

  1677. but he

  1678. was wicked,

  1679. just like

  1680. you and

  1681. I and

  1682. every man

  1683. that's on

  1684. the planet,

  1685. until God

  1686. does something

  1687. to captivate

  1688. the heart

  1689. of David

  1690. and draw

  1691. him to

  1692. himself.

  1693. And then

  1694. David's

  1695. heart is

  1696. changed,

  1697. where he

  1698. acknowledges

  1699. God and

  1700. cries out to

  1701. God and

  1702. calls out to

  1703. God and

  1704. says,

  1705. I need

  1706. you.

  1707. And his

  1708. deeds change.

  1709. He doesn't

  1710. any longer

  1711. walk with

  1712. the wicked.

  1713. He doesn't

  1714. sit and

  1715. hang out

  1716. with that

  1717. crowd.

  1718. He doesn't

  1719. do what

  1720. they do

  1721. anymore.

  1722. He doesn't

  1723. want any

  1724. part of it.

  1725. Hey,

  1726. by the way,

  1727. it doesn't

  1728. mean we're

  1729. perfect as

  1730. Christians,

  1731. but it means

  1732. that our

  1733. heart is

  1734. different.

  1735. And we

  1736. do,

  1737. do you

  1738. find that

  1739. every now

  1740. and then

  1741. you choose

  1742. something

  1743. that's

  1744. sinful?

  1745. Do you

  1746. find that

  1747. you

  1748. volitionally

  1749. step over

  1750. that line

  1751. when you

  1752. know you

  1753. shouldn't

  1754. because the

  1755. bells and

  1756. whistles are

  1757. going off

  1758. and God

  1759. say,

  1760. no,

  1761. no,

  1762. no,

  1763. no,

  1764. no,

  1765. no,

  1766. no,

  1767. no,

  1768. no,

  1769. no,

  1770. no,

  1771. no,

  1772. no,

  1773. no,

  1774. no,

  1775. no,

  1776. no,

  1777. no,

  1778. no,

  1779. no,

  1780. no,

  1781. no,

  1782. no,

  1783. no,

  1784. !

1785. and lastly of these three in this category the third one is the destination what is the

1786. destination of God's people well we've already looked at that earlier but I want you to see it

1787. here at the end of this psalm here

1788. it says this oh save your people and bless your heritage be their shepherd shepherd and carry

1789. them forever you know what the destination for God's people are in the hands of the Messiah in

1790. the hands of the Father that's the destination we'll be with him for eternity we will be we'll

1791. enjoy him in his presence did you notice the change in David I skipped this kind of intentionally

1792. the heart of David did you see the effect in verse six and seven

1793. the effect of a man who's been forgiven the effect of a man whose heart has been changed look at it

1794. this is David blessed be the Lord for he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy

1795. the Lord is my strength and my shield do you think he's recognizing who he is do you think he's honoring

1796. you think his eyes are turned to him do you think he's regarding the Lord yeah the Lord's my strength

1797. my shield in him my heart trust I am helped my heart greatly rejoices

1798. and with my song I give thanks to him you know what's my hope is that all of us as believers

1799. for those of us who are believers that we would begin to worship like this when no one's around

1800. that you know what I find is that Holy Spirit creates songs in our heart now I will say that

1801. there's songs I love to listen to that aid me in worship but I will say this is that God does

1802. something to create those songs in our heart that spill out of us from his Holy Spirit you know David

1803. has many psalms to his name and you think that that how do you think that happened

1804. I can picture him in the wilderness with that harp and he's sitting worshiping and that plays itself

1805. out in what has become a song and certainly that didn't end when he turned 17 and it didn't end when

1806. he turned 25 and it didn't end when he turned 46 or however long he lived I don't actually know how old

1807. he was when he passed away but we know from the psalms that some of these psalms are written in

1808. hardship later in life some are written in difficult times some are written when he's praising some are

1809. event driven it wasn't something that stopped there's something that was a part of David's life

1810. that there's songs that spill out of him there's worship that spills out of him you know where's that

1811. come from it's a changed heart a heart that is changed will do what will not live like we used to live

1812. a heart that is changed the man or woman that's born again we are different people we've been born

1813. spiritually we desire different things we desire to honor and live for God our life looks different

1814. the way we treat people is different there's a love and a gentleness and that should come out of

1815. those who are maturing in the faith it doesn't happen on day one doesn't happen on day 10 doesn't

1816. necessarily happen on day 100 you know what happens is the Holy Spirit is gently and gradually changing

1817. us into the very image of Jesus that we're becoming like Christ we're becoming like Christ in this way is

1818. that Christ didn't sin and you know what what maturity is is it's a this gradual growth of saying no to sin and

1819. yes to God in living for him

1820. I wonder if you notice uh verse 9 this this beautiful we'll end on this this beautiful picture

1821. oh save your people and bless your heritage if you ever pondered what it means when he when David says

1822. that save your heritage if you ever thought about what the heritage of God is

1823. isn't that an interesting topic in turn

1824. save your heritage I love the next verses be their shepherd you see the picture of Christ here

  1825. how is it

1826. that the people are ever gonna receive this changed heart it's always always always through the Savior

1827. it's always through the Shepherd and the Shepherd is Christ

  1828. it's always through Christ

1829. that we are drawn to the Father through the Son based on faith

1830. it's the work of Christ on our behalf and we become his heritage what is a heritage what is the heritage of the Lord how would we

  1831. articulate that

1832. I would say this we're trophies of his grace

  1833. that's a phrase that I stole

1834. I didn't generate that but I've heard it it's lingered in my ear because it speaks

1835. to me volumes we're trophies of his grace as if

1836. at the end of time when when all is done and Christ comes back he brings it to he

1837. he retrieves his bride takes his bride home

1838. no more weeping no more tears we're in the eternal kingdom we're glorified

  1839. and it's like

1840. the Father can say to the Son look

  1841. look

1842. we get to share our glory with these

1843. these trophies of our grace

1844. they had no hope apart from

1845. the grace that we extended

1846. that they might know us that they might fellowship

1847. with us that they might be in our presence

  1848. that we might enjoy

1849. one another and God looks at the trophies of his grace

1850. look what he has done through the

1851. the work of Christ on our behalf

1852. I'm gonna close with Ephesians 1 I just want you to listen

  1853. to what

  1854. has been done

1855. for the sake of the heritage of God

  1856. that is us

1857. just let the word of God speak to you here

1858. and I want you to listen to the according to

  1859. the phrase according to

1860. what is the reason that God has

  1861. given grace

1862. special grace to us that leads to salvation

1863. why would he do that

  1864. what was the reason

  1865. according to

  1866. we'll see here

  1867. listen

  1868. blessed be the God

1869. Father of our Lord Jesus Christ

1870. who has blessed us in Christ

  1871. with every spiritual blessing

  1872. in the heavenly places

1873. even as he chose us in him

1874. before the foundation of the world

1875. that we should be holy

  1876. and blameless before him

1877. in love he predestined us for adoption

  1878. to himself

  1879. as sons

  1880. through Jesus Christ

1881. according to the purpose of his will

  1882. again

  1883. according to what

  1884. the will of God

  1885. to the praise

  1886. of his glorious grace

1887. with which he has blessed us

  1888. in the beloved

1889. in him we have redemption

  1890. through his blood

1891. the forgiveness of our trespasses

  1892. according to what

  1893. according to the riches

  1894. of his grace

1895. which he lavished upon us

1896. in all wisdom and insight

  1897. making known to us

1898. the mystery of his will

  1899. according to what

  1900. according to his purpose

1901. which he set forth in Christ

  1902. as a plan

1903. for the fullness of time

1904. to unite all things in him

  1905. things in heaven

  1906. and things on earth

1907. in him we have obtained

  1908. an inheritance

  1909. having been predestined

  1910. according to what

  1911. according to the purpose

  1912. of him who works

  1913. all things

  1914. according to what

1915. according to his own will

1916. it's by the will of God

  1917. that we know him

1918. it's by the will of God

  1919. that we've been

  1920. brought into the kingdom

1921. it's by the will of God

  1922. that he's drawn us

1923. and he's tapped on our heart

  1924. and said

1925. do you see my glory

1926. do you see my glory

1927. will you respond to me

1928. will you call to me

  1929. and cry to me

  1930. let's pray

  1931. father

  1932. again this morning

1933. I think of your mercy

  1934. that

  1935. father we didn't deserve

  1936. your mercy

  1937. we were an offender

  1938. an offense to you

  1939. because of our sin

  1940. and yet you

  1941. forgave us

  1942. father I thank you

  1943. for your mercy

  1944. I thank you

  1945. for your gift

  1946. of salvation

  1947. I thank you

  1948. for your son Jesus

  1949. who would come

  1950. and suffer

  1951. suffer the ridicule

  1952. of the Jews

  1953. he would suffer

  1954. the cruelty

  1955. of a cross

  1956. he would be

  1957. beat to a pulp

  1958. for our sake

  1959. when he didn't deserve

  1960. any of that

  1961. being righteous

  1962. and just
