  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  2. ! Genesis chapter 12 and our passage this morning will be the second half of Genesis chapter 12 starting in verse 10 and then all of chapter 13.

Genesis 12 chapter mention Genesis 12 chapter mention

  3. So when you found that in your Bibles Genesis 12 verse 10 all the way through the end of chapter 13.

    Genesis 12:10

  4. Let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word this morning.

  5. Now there was a famine in the land.

  6. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there for the famine was severe in the land.

  7. When he was about to enter Egypt he said to Sarai his wife,

  8. I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance.

  9. And when the Egyptians see you they will say, this is his wife.

  10. Then they will kill me but they will let you live.

  11. Say you are my sister that it may go well with me because of you and that my life may be spared for your sake.

  12. When Abram entered Egypt the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.

  13. And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her they praised her to Pharaoh.

  14. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.

  15. And for her sake he dealt well with Abram.

  16. And he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys and camels.

  17. But the Lord afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.

  18. So Pharaoh called Abram and said, what is this you've done to me?

  19. Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?

  20. Why did you say she is my sister so that I took her for my wife?

  21. Now then here's your wife, take her, go.

  22. And Pharaoh gave orders concerning him and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.

  23. So Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had and Lot with him into the Negev.

  24. Now Abram was very rich in livestock and silver and in gold.

  25. And he journeyed on from the Negev as far as Bethel to the place where his tent had been at the beginning,

  26. between Bethel and Ai, to the place where he had made an altar at the first.

  27. And there Abram called upon the name of the Lord.

  28. And Lot who went with Abram also had flocks and herds and tents,

  29. so that the land could not support both of them dwelling together,

  30. for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together.

  31. And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock.

  32. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were dwelling in the land.

  33. Then Abram said to Lot,

  34. Let there be no strife between you and me and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen,

  35. for we are kinsmen.

  36. Is not the whole land before you?

  37. Separate yourself from me.

  38. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right,

  39. or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.

  40. And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere,

  41. like the garden of the Lord,

  42. like the land of Egypt in the direction of Zoar.

  43. This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

  44. So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley, and Lot journeyed east.

  45. Thus they separated from each other.

  46. Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the valley,

  47. and moved his tent as far as Sodom.

  48. Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord.

  49. Then the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him,

  50. Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are,

  51. northward and southward and eastward and westward,

  52. for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.

  53. I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth,

  54. so that if one can count the dust of the earth,

  55. your offspring also can be counted.

  56. Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land,

  57. for I will give it to you.

  58. So Abram moved his tent and came and settled by the oaks of Mamre,

  59. which are at Hebron.

  60. And there he built an altar to the Lord.

  61. The grass withers and the flower fades,

  62. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  63. Father, we praise you for your word,

  64. and we pray now as we look to this account

  65. and see your faithfulness to your promises.

  66. Lord, we ask that you would deepen our faith in you,

  67. we pray in Christ's name.

  68. Amen.

  69. You may be seated.

  70. But you learn pretty quickly as a parent

  71. that you ought not make promises that you can't keep.

  72. Or better yet,

  73. don't make promises that might in some way be threatened

  74. by something outside of your control.

  75. Because as you know,

  76. there are about a million ways

  77. that things can go off the rails,

  78. things can go wrong,

  79. and your promises might not be capped.

  80. For example,

  81. don't promise your kids

  82. that no matter what happens,

  83. you promise

  84. you will take them to the pool

  85. next Friday.

  86. Because of course,

  87. next Friday is a long way away,

  88. and something might go wrong.

  89. Something might go wrong with you.

  90. You might get sick before next Friday.

  91. Something might happen.

  92. Some work comes up.

  93. Something else comes up.

  94. Some family emergency might happen.

  95. Or if you're honest,

  96. you might just change your mind

  97. before Friday comes.

  98. You might not want to go to the pool anymore.

  99. So the issue might be within you,

  100. and you won't keep your promise.

  101. Or the issue might be something outside of you,

  102. something external,

  103. something beyond yourself.

  104. So Friday comes,

  105. and it starts to rain.

  106. Friday comes,

  107. and the pool is closed.

  108. Friday comes,

  109. and you're on your way.

  110. Somebody else runs a red light

  111. and runs into your car.

  112. There are all sorts of threats,

  113. both internal and external,

  114. to our promises coming to pass.

  115. But not so with God.

  116. God faces no such obstacles

  117. to His promises coming to pass.

  118. The good news of our passage this morning

  119. is that when God makes promises,

  120. no distraction,

  121. no enemy,

  122. no threat,

  123. whether internal or external,

  124. can keep Him from fulfilling His word.

  125. Our God is faithful

  126. to fulfill every promise.

  127. No threat, internal or external,

  128. can ever nullify the promises of God.

  129. That's the big idea for us this morning

  130. in our passage.

  131. We saw last week from Genesis chapter 12

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  132. that God has made some pretty incredible promises

  133. to Abram.

  134. But this morning,

  135. what we see is that

  136. as soon as God makes these promises,

  137. what happens?

  138. We see threats to the promise.

  139. In fact, we see two threats

  140. here in our passage this morning.

  141. This will be our outline this morning.

  142. Two threats to the promise.

  143. We see the first one here

  144. in the second half of chapter 12.

  145. First, we see a threat to the promised seed.

  146. A threat to the promised offspring.

  147. Look there to chapter 12, verse 10.

  148. We saw last week

  149. that Abram has come into Canaan.

  150. He's arrived in the promised land.

  151. But pretty quickly,

  152. we see things aren't so great

  153. here in the promised land,

  154. are they?

  155. Verse 10 says that

  156. there was famine in the land.

  157. And apparently,

  158. it says the famine was severe

  159. in the land.

  160. So what does Abram do?

  161. He leaves the promised land

  162. and he comes down

  163. to the land of Egypt.

  164. And already here

  165. in just one verse,

  166. things have taken

  167. a pretty drastic shift,

  168. haven't they?

  169. God has just called Abram

  170. and told him to go

  171. into the land of Canaan.

  172. He's just promised

  173. to give him this whole land.

  174. All this would be his.

  175. But here,

  176. automatically,

  177. right away,

  178. as soon as there's an issue,

  179. here he is

  180. leaving the promised land

  181. because quite literally,

  182. the grass is greener

  183. down in Egypt.

  184. It's not a good start

  185. for Abram.

  186. And we see that

  187. once he gets there

  188. in Egypt,

  189. it doesn't go much better

  190. for him, does it?

  191. Look there,

  192. starting in verse 11.

  193. As Abram and his wife Sarai

  194. are about to enter Egypt,

  195. he has this bright idea.

  196. Now, married women

  197. in the room,

  198. I want you to

  199. place yourself

  200. in Sarai's shoes

  201. for a minute.

  202. Tell me how this would go.

  203. Now, you have just moved

  204. to a new place

  205. with your husband.

  206. He said,

  207. we got to go.

  208. We got to move.

  209. You just move

  210. everything you have,

  211. everything you own

  212. to leave your father's house,

  213. to leave what's familiar to you,

  214. go into a brand new place.

  215. And now he says,

  216. babe,

  217. it's time to move again.

  218. It's time to go.

  219. We need to go down

  220. into Egypt.

  221. And then he says,

  222. darling,

  223. you are so,

  224. so beautiful.

  225. That's a good start,

  226. right?

  227. You are so beautiful

  228. that any man

  229. who lays his eyes on you

  230. would want you

  231. as his wife.

  232. It's pretty good.

  233. He says,

  234. darling,

  235. you are so beautiful

  236. that when we get down

  237. to Egypt,

  238. I want you to tell everybody

  239. you're my sister.

  240. Now, we don't have

  241. Sarai's account

  242. of what happened here,

  243. but I can only imagine

  244. that she might say

  245. something like,

  246. why would I do that,

  247. Abram?

  248. And he says,

  249. well,

  250. because if you tell them

  251. that you're my sister,

  252. maybe they'll let me live

  253. and they'll take good care of me

  254. and they'll give me

  255. all these blessings

  256. and so you go be with them

  257. so that it might go well

  258. with me.

  259. How would that go over

  260. for you ladies?

  261. This would be a threat,

  262. I would think,

  263. to any marriage,

  264. wouldn't it?

  265. But there's a bigger issue

  266. at stake here,

  267. isn't there?

  268. Do you see what it is?

  269. This is a threat

  270. to God's promise.

  271. God promised

  272. to give Abram

  273. offspring

  274. and that would be

  275. difficult enough already

  276. considering Abram's age

  277. and considering

  278. Sarai's infertility,

  279. she is barren,

  280. but that would be

  281. absolutely impossible

  282. if as soon as

  283. they go to Egypt,

  284. Abram just gives

  285. his wife away.

  286. We're left wondering,

  287. how will God

  288. fulfill his promise

  289. to Abram?

  290. Abram almost immediately

  291. because of his own sin,

  292. because of his own selfishness,

  293. he is a threat

  294. to the promise of God.

  295. And to make matters worse,

  296. look there,

  297. starting in verse 14.

  298. To make matters worse,

  299. it seems like the plan

  300. is working,

  301. doesn't it?

  302. It seems like he was right.

  303. Verse 14 says,

  304. when Abram entered Egypt,

  305. the Egyptians saw

  306. that the woman

  307. was very beautiful,

  308. he was right about that,

  309. and when the princes

  310. of Pharaoh saw

  311. her,

  312. they praised her

  313. to Pharaoh,

  314. and the woman

  315. was taken into

  316. Pharaoh's house,

  317. and for her sake,

  318. he dealt well

  319. with Abram,

  320. and he had sheep

  321. and oxen

  322. and male donkeys

  323. and male servants

  324. and female servants

  325. and female donkeys

  326. and camels,

  327. and by all accounts,

  328. it looks like his plan

  329. is working out

  330. just fine,

  331. doesn't it?

  332. By all accounts,

  333. Abram is doing

  334. pretty well.

  335. He's getting away

  336. with it.

  337. His plan

  338. is resulting

  339. in prosperity.

  340. He's got all sorts

  341. of material blessings,

  342. sheep and oxen,

  343. donkeys and servants.

  344. He is prospering

  345. because of his lie.

  346. Abram deceives

  347. his way into blessing.

  348. He lies

  349. and he prospers

  350. and it seems like

  351. all is going great

  352. for Abram,

  353. doesn't it?

  354. But do you think

  355. that that's how God

  356. desires to bless Abram?

  357. God promised

  358. to bless Abram,

  359. but do you think

  360. that this is

  361. how he desired

  362. to do it?

  363. No,

  364. not at all.

  365. Psalm 37,

    Psalms 37:16

  366. verse 16,

  367. it tells us,

  368. better is the little

  369. that the righteous

  370. has

  371. than the abundance

  372. of the wicked.

  373. You hear that?

  374. Better is the little

  375. that the righteous

  376. has

  377. than all

  378. the abundance

  379. of the wicked.

  380. In other words,

  381. in God's accounting

  382. of things,

  383. in God's economy,

  384. righteousness

  385. and integrity

  386. and faith

  387. and blamelessness

  388. and holiness,

  389. Christ-likeness

  390. are worth more

  391. than all the material

  392. blessings in the world.

  393. Sometimes I think

  394. that you and I

  395. can be tempted

  396. in the very same way

  397. that Abram is tempted here.

  398. We can be tempted

  399. to just maybe

  400. just tell a little

  401. white lie,

  402. just something

  403. a little bit short

  404. of the truth,

  405. just some alternative

  406. version of the whole truth

  407. in order that it might

  408. go well with us.

  409. That we might be blessed.

  410. I mean,

  411. what's wrong with that?

  412. We come out

  413. on the positive

  414. end of things.

  415. What's so wrong

  416. with just giving

  417. a little bit

  418. less than the truth?

  419. And so we might

  420. be tempted

  421. to just fudge

  422. the numbers

  423. just a little bit

  424. on our taxes.

  425. Maybe just a little bit.

  426. That way we don't

  427. have to pay everything

  428. that we actually owe

  429. and we come out

  430. a little bit better

  431. on the end.

  432. What's wrong with that?

  433. Maybe we're tempted

  434. to deceive our boss

  435. and pretend like

  436. we're busy at work

  437. when we're really

  438. using that paid time

  439. to go take care

  440. of personal things,

  441. personal business.

  442. That's so normal

  443. and we think,

  444. well,

  445. what's the big deal

  446. with that?

  447. The big deal

  448. is that God's people

  449. are called to be

  450. people of the truth

  451. and we aren't called

  452. to just chase blessing

  453. any way that we can get it.

  454. We're called to be people

  455. of holiness

  456. and righteousness

  457. and blamelessness

  458. and to seek God's blessing

  459. in God's time

  460. in God's way

  461. even if we think

  462. we could just reach out

  463. and grab it ourselves

  464. if we just took

  465. a little shortcut.

  466. We're called to seek first

  467. the kingdom of God

  468. and His righteousness

  469. and all these things

  470. will be added to you.

  471. Maybe not now,

  472. maybe not how you desire.

  473. Abram here,

  474. the man of faith,

  475. he shows us very clearly

  476. that he too,

  477. like us,

  478. is a sinner.

  479. You know,

  480. it's amazing

  481. how similar this passage

  482. is to the fall

  483. in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  484. We just talked about this

  485. in our grow class

  486. this morning.

  487. The fall in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  488. Abram,

  489. like Adam before him,

  490. fails in his responsibility

  491. to love

  492. and to guard

  493. and to protect his wife.

  494. But what I want you to see

  495. is that Abram's not just

  496. acting like Adam,

  497. Abram is acting like Satan.

  498. Now the language here

  499. is so similar

  500. to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  501. Just think about it.

  502. Just as the enemy

  503. deceived Adam and Eve

  504. and they saw

  505. that the fruit was good

  506. and they took it

  507. and ate,

  508. here because of

  509. Abram's deception,

  510. the Egyptians see

  511. that Sarai looks good

  512. to the eyes

  513. and they take her

  514. into Pharaoh's house.

  515. You see that pattern?

  516. See,

  517. good,

  518. take.

  519. See,

  520. good,

  521. take.

  522. This is in many ways

  523. another repeat of the fall,

  524. but did you notice

  525. Abram's place in all of it?

  526. Abram is standing

  527. in the place

  528. of the serpent himself.

  529. He is the one

  530. deceiving the Egyptians.

  531. He's the one

  532. that's leading them

  533. to see

  534. and to take

  535. what was not rightfully

  536. theirs to take.

  537. What a tragedy.

  538. The one who is meant

  539. to be an agent

  540. of blessing to the world

  541. is right away

  542. because of his sin,

  543. he is multiplying curse

  544. instead of blessing.

  545. The one

  546. through whom

  547. the promised offspring

  548. is meant to come

  549. is threatening

  550. the promise

  551. right away

  552. because he's giving

  553. his wife away

  554. in exchange for blessing.

  555. Look at what God does.

  556. Verse 17.

  557. God does not

  558. let Abram's sin

  559. stop his promise.

  560. You see that?

  561. God does not

  562. let Abram's

  563. unfaithfulness

  564. nullify

  565. his faithfulness.

  566. Verse 17.

  567. God afflicts

  568. Pharaoh with plagues.

  569. Now that ought to

  570. sound familiar too,

  571. doesn't it?

  572. Oh, this is

  573. sort of

  574. foreshadowing

  575. the events

  576. of the Exodus

  577. to come.

  578. You remember

  579. the Exodus.

  580. God's people

  581. are driven to Egypt

  582. because of famine.

  583. They are taken

  584. into Pharaoh's

  585. property.

  586. The promises

  587. of God

  588. appear to be

  589. threatened,

  590. but God

  591. steps in.

  592. God afflicts

  593. the Egyptians

  594. with plagues.

  595. God intervenes.

  596. He brings

  597. his people

  598. out with

  599. all the blessings

  600. and the property

  601. of the Egyptians

  602. back to the land

  603. of promise.

  604. Well, this is

  605. exactly what

  606. happens here

  607. with Abram.

  608. And the point

  609. is, the point

  610. that would

  611. certainly comfort

  612. the Israelites

  613. in years to come,

  614. God will

  615. defend

  616. his promises.

  617. God will

  618. not let

  619. Abram's

  620. faithlessness

  621. or foolishness

  622. derail

  623. or destroy

  624. his purposes.

  625. God will

  626. not let

  627. Abram's

  628. sin

  629. or Abram's

  630. selfishness

  631. alter his

  632. plan in

  633. any way

  634. to bring

  635. about the

  636. promised

  637. offspring

  638. through

  639. him.

  640. God

  641. acts

  642. to fulfill

  643. all his

  644. promises.

  645. That's true

  646. for the

  647. promised

  648. offspring.

  649. And second

  650. here we see

  651. is also true

  652. for the

  653. promised

  654. land.

  655. Look there

  656. to chapter

  657. 13.

  658. The second

  659. threat that

  660. we see

  661. here is

  662. the threat

  663. to the

  664. promised

  665. land.

  666. Look there

  667. with me

  668. starting in

  669. verse 1

  670. chapter 13.

  671. Chapter 13

  672. tells us that

  673. after all of

  674. this,

  675. Abram left

  676. Egypt.

  677. He's kicked

  678. out of

  679. Egypt.

  680. Pharaoh

  681. says,

  682. you've got

  683. to get

  684. out of

  685. here.

  686. And through

  687. this whole

  688. ordeal,

  689. he comes

  690. out very

  691. rich,

  692. very wealthy.

  693. He has

  694. sheep and

  695. oxen and

  696. donkeys and

  697. servants,

  698. silver and

  699. gold and

  700. somehow still

  701. has his

  702. wife.

  703. But starting

  704. in verse 2

  705. we see that

  706. this abundance

  707. of wealth

  708. very quickly

  709. poses a

  710. problem for

  711. Abram.

  712. Look there

  713. to verse 2.

  714. Verse 2

  715. says,

  716. Now Abram

  717. was very

  718. rich in

  719. livestock and

  720. silver and

  721. gold and

  722. he journeyed

  723. on from

  724. the Negev

  725. as far as

  726. Bethel to

  727. the place

  728. where he

  729. had his

  730. tent at

  731. the beginning

  732. between

  733. Bethel and

  734. Ai to

  735. the place

  736. where he

  737. made the

  738. altar at

  739. the first

  740. and there

  741. Abram

  742. called upon

  743. the name

  744. of the

  745. Lord.

  746. And we

  747. hear in

  748. verse 5

  749. that Lot

  750. also who

  751. went with

  752. Abram also

  753. had an

  754. abundance of

  755. material

  756. blessings,

  757. flocks and

  758. herds and

  759. tents,

  760. so that the

  761. land could

  762. not support

  763. both of

  764. them dwelling

  765. together,

  766. for their

  767. possessions were

  768. so great that

  769. they couldn't

  770. dwell together

  771. and there's

  772. strife between

  773. the herdsmen of

  774. Abram's livestock

  775. and the herdsmen

  776. of Lot's

  777. livestock.

  778. The promised

  779. land has some

  780. problems here,

  781. doesn't it?

  782. For one thing,

  783. there's famine,

  784. and for another,

  785. it's just not

  786. big enough.

  787. It's not big

  788. enough to host

  789. even two wealthy

  790. men, and the

  791. reason why we

  792. see it here is

  793. that it's still

  794. occupied by the

  795. Canaanites and

  796. the Perizzites.

  797. They're still

  798. dwelling in the

  799. land.

  800. The enemies are

  801. still there,

  802. and so the

  803. space that

  804. Abram and

  805. Lot can

  806. occupy is

  807. limited.

  808. There's simply

  809. not enough

  810. room for both

  811. of them.

  812. They're stepping

  813. on each

  814. other's toes.

  815. It's a problem.

  816. You know how

  817. when you go on

  818. vacation with

  819. your family,

  820. extended family,

  821. and you have

  822. all of them in

  823. maybe like one

  824. big beach

  825. house, and you

  826. just are trying

  827. to get into the

  828. kitchen, trying

  829. to get what

  830. you need,

  831. trying to go to

  832. the bathroom,

  833. and there's only

  834. like two or

  835. three for 20

  836. people?

  837. It gets old

  838. real quick,

  839. doesn't it?

  840. You are

  841. stepping on

  842. each other's

  843. toes.

  844. The space

  845. simply isn't

  846. there.

  847. Look how

  848. Abram goes

  849. about it.

  850. Notice the

  851. contrast here

  852. between Abram

  853. and Lot.

  854. Abram makes

  855. a move

  856. towards peace

  857. with his

  858. family.

  859. Chapter 13,

  860. verse 8,

  861. Abram says to

  862. Lot, let there

  863. be no strife

  864. between you

  865. and me,

  866. between your

  867. herdsmen and

  868. my herdsmen.

  869. Why?

  870. For we are

  871. kinsmen.

  872. We're family.

  873. I don't want

  874. to fight with

  875. you.

  876. Is not

  877. the whole

  878. land before

  879. you?

  880. Separate

  881. yourself from

  882. me.

  883. If you take

  884. the left

  885. hand, I'll

  886. go to the

  887. right.

  888. If you take

  889. the right

  890. hand, I'll

  891. go to the

  892. left.

  893. Look out

  894. and take

  895. whatever you

  896. want.

  897. Abram gives

  898. Lot first

  899. pick.

  900. Now Bethel,

  901. where they are,

  902. that's about

  903. 2,800 feet

  904. above sea

  905. level.

  906. And so Lot,

  907. he can truly

  908. look out on

  909. all the land

  910. as far as

  911. his eye can

  912. see.

  913. He can lay

  914. eyes on all

  915. of it and

  916. take his

  917. pick.

  918. And Abram,

  919. very generously

  920. I would say,

  921. he says,

  922. I don't want

  923. there to be

  924. trouble between

  925. us, so you

  926. just take a

  927. look, you

  928. get whatever

  929. you want.

  930. Lot looks

  931. and it

  932. doesn't take

  933. him too

  934. long to

  935. make his

  936. decision,

  937. does it?

  938. Right away,

  939. verse 10,

  940. it says,

  941. he lifts

  942. his eyes

  943. and sees

  944. that the

  945. Jordan Valley

  946. looks good,

  947. it's well

  948. watered,

  949. like the

  950. garden of

  951. the Lord,

  952. like Egypt

  953. in fact.

  954. And so what

  955. does Lot do?

  956. Look at

  957. this.

  958. Lot sees

  959. that it

  960. looks good

  961. and he

  962. takes for

  963. himself the

  964. Jordan Valley.

  965. Here we go

  966. again.

  967. Do you hear

  968. that pattern

  969. again?

  970. See,

  971. good,

  972. take,

  973. see,

  974. good,

  975. take.

  976. That's a good

  977. indicator for

  978. us that

  979. something is

  980. not quite

  981. right with

  982. Lot's decision

  983. making here.

  984. He sees,

  985. it looks

  986. good,

  987. he takes.

  988. what's the

  989. issue?

  990. Ultimately,

  991. this is a

  992. contrast between

  993. Abram walking

  994. by faith and

  995. Lot walking

  996. by sight.

  997. You think

  998. about it,

  999. what could

  1000. motivate Abram

  1001. to be so

  1002. generous?

  1003. What could

  1004. motivate him

  1005. to be so

  1006. confident that

  1007. he can open

  1008. up all the

  1009. land and tell

  1010. Lot to just

  1011. go take

  1012. whatever you

  1013. want?

  1014. Abram is

  1015. acting like

  1016. someone who

  1017. trusts in

  1018. God's promise

  1019. to give him

  1020. all the land,

  1021. isn't he?

  1022. And meanwhile,

  1023. Lot is acting

  1024. like someone who

  1025. makes choices

  1026. based on

  1027. simply what

  1028. appeals to

  1029. the flesh.

  1030. Abram,

  1031. he's showing

  1032. us here that

  1033. trust in God's

  1034. promises ought

  1035. to make God's

  1036. people incredibly

  1037. generous and

  1038. open-handed with

  1039. all of our

  1040. worldly treasure.

  1041. You realize,

  1042. church,

  1043. God has

  1044. promised us

  1045. eternal riches

  1046. in Christ

  1047. beyond our

  1048. wildest imagination

  1049. for all

  1050. eternity,

  1051. all our needs

  1052. met in

  1053. Christ,

  1054. and so

  1055. therefore,

  1056. we can be

  1057. generous

  1058. and open-handed

  1059. in ways that

  1060. simply don't make

  1061. sense to the

  1062. world's way of

  1063. accounting for

  1064. things.

  1065. God has

  1066. promised us

  1067. forgiveness

  1068. in Christ.

  1069. He has

  1070. reconciled us

  1071. to himself

  1072. in Christ.

  1073. And so,

  1074. God's people,

  1075. we can humble

  1076. ourselves and

  1077. risk looking

  1078. foolish in

  1079. order to

  1080. reconcile and

  1081. make peace

  1082. with others.

  1083. Christ has

  1084. promised us

  1085. there is no

  1086. one who has

  1087. left house

  1088. or brothers

  1089. or sisters

  1090. or mother

  1091. or father

  1092. or children

  1093. or lands

  1094. for my sake

  1095. and for the

  1096. gospel who

  1097. will not

  1098. receive a

  1099. hundredfold.

  1100. Now,

  1101. in this time,

  1102. houses and

  1103. brothers and

  1104. sisters and

  1105. mothers and

  1106. children and

  1107. lands with

  1108. persecutions

  1109. and in the

  1110. age to come

  1111. eternal life.

  1112. if so,

  1113. God's people

  1114. can take

  1115. risks that

  1116. look foolish

  1117. in the world's

  1118. eyes.

  1119. Risks like

  1120. moving to a

  1121. dangerous place

  1122. to take the

  1123. gospel where

  1124. it's not yet

  1125. been heard.

  1126. Risks like

  1127. turning down

  1128. extra hours

  1129. at work on

  1130. the weekends

  1131. to prioritize

  1132. gathering with

  1133. God's people

  1134. in worship.

  1135. Risks like

  1136. risking

  1137. relationships

  1138. and risking

  1139. rejection to

  1140. share the

  1141. gospel with

  1142. our friends

  1143. and our

  1144. family and

  1145. our neighbors

  1146. and our

  1147. co-workers.

  1148. Why?

  1149. Because like

  1150. Abram, we are

  1151. called to walk

  1152. by faith and

  1153. not by sight.

  1154. Abram shows

  1155. us what this

  1156. looks like.

  1157. Meanwhile,

  1158. Lot shows us

  1159. what it looks

  1160. like to walk

  1161. by sight.

  1162. Did you notice

  1163. the little

  1164. editorial comments

  1165. about the land

  1166. that Lot

  1167. chose?

  1168. It looks

  1169. good, doesn't

  1170. it?

  1171. It looks

  1172. beautiful.

  1173. It's like

  1174. the land of

  1175. Eden.

  1176. It's like

  1177. Egypt.

  1178. It's well

  1179. watered.

  1180. It's beautiful.

  1181. But look at

  1182. these little

  1183. comments.

  1184. All this

  1185. was before

  1186. the Lord

  1187. destroyed

  1188. Sodom and

  1189. Gomorrah.

  1190. Verse 13,

  1191. the men of

  1192. Sodom were

  1193. wicked,

  1194. great sinners

  1195. against the

  1196. Lord.

  1197. As far as

  1198. Lot's eyes

  1199. could tell,

  1200. this was

  1201. clearly the

  1202. best choice,

  1203. but as we'll

  1204. soon see,

  1205. there are

  1206. bigger issues

  1207. to come

  1208. for Lot.

  1209. Calvin,

  1210. in light of

  1211. this passage,

  1212. he urges

  1213. us,

  1214. let us

  1215. then learn

  1216. by this

  1217. example,

  1218. that our

  1219. eyes are

  1220. not to

  1221. be trusted,

  1222. but that

  1223. we must

  1224. rather be

  1225. on our

  1226. guard,

  1227. lest we

  1228. be ensnared

  1229. by them,

  1230. and be

  1231. encircled,

  1232. unaware,

  1233. with many

  1234. evils,

  1235. just as

  1236. Lot,

  1237. when he

  1238. fancied that

  1239. he was

  1240. dwelling in

  1241. paradise,

  1242. was nearly

  1243. plunged into

  1244. the depths

  1245. of hell.

  1246. Church,

  1247. how often

  1248. are our

  1249. choices

  1250. driven by

  1251. sight,

  1252. faith,

  1253. and not

  1254. by faith?

  1255. How often

  1256. are our

  1257. decisions

  1258. driven by

  1259. what appeals

  1260. to our

  1261. senses,

  1262. and not

  1263. by the

  1264. promises

  1265. of God?

  1266. Do we

  1267. realize that

  1268. in every

  1269. single decision

  1270. that we

  1271. make,

  1272. there is

  1273. more to

  1274. consider

  1275. than simply

  1276. what appeals

  1277. to our

  1278. flesh?

  1279. There's

  1280. application

  1281. here all

  1282. over the

  1283. place,

  1284. isn't there?

  1285. There's

  1286. application

  1287. for moving

  1288. to a new

  1289. place.

  1290. Often people

  1291. make moves

  1292. based on

  1293. jobs,

  1294. they get a

  1295. new,

  1296. better job

  1297. opportunity,

  1298. leads them

  1299. to a new

  1300. place,

  1301. they look

  1302. up the

  1303. place,

  1304. they Google

  1305. it,

  1306. and they

  1307. see all

  1308. this beautiful

  1309. landscape,

  1310. all the

  1311. fun things

  1312. to do,

  1313. all the

  1314. areas to

  1315. explore,

  1316. all the

  1317. good restaurants

  1318. to eat

  1319. at,

  1320. and then

  1321. somewhere

  1322. all the

  1323. way down

  1324. the list,

  1325. eventually,

  1326. maybe,

  1327. they might

  1328. think about

  1329. finding a

  1330. church

  1331. somewhere.

  1332. Can I

  1333. suggest that

  1334. that's

  1335. completely

  1336. backwards?

  1337. It is

  1338. infinitely

  1339. better to

  1340. be in

  1341. a place

  1342. that is

  1343. physically

  1344. famished,

  1345. but spiritually

  1346. well watered,

  1347. than to be

  1348. somewhere physically

  1349. beautiful,

  1350. but spiritually

  1351. famished.

  1352. Apply this

  1353. to dating.

  1354. A few of you

  1355. are maybe

  1356. in that

  1357. phase,

  1358. and if you're

  1359. not,

  1360. maybe your

  1361. kids or

  1362. your grandkids

  1363. will be

  1364. soon.

  1365. If there

  1366. is anywhere

  1367. in our

  1368. culture

  1369. that emphasizes

  1370. sight,

  1371. and feeling,

  1372. and physical,

  1373. appealing to

  1374. the senses,

  1375. this is it,

  1376. isn't it?

  1377. And hear me

  1378. say,

  1379. attraction is

  1380. good,

  1381. chemistry,

  1382. if you want

  1383. to call it

  1384. that,

  1385. that's fine,

  1386. that's good,

  1387. but for a

  1388. Christian,

  1389. nothing is

  1390. more important

  1391. than making

  1392. sure that you

  1393. are spiritually

  1394. united in

  1395. Christ.

  1396. I mean,

  1397. how far down

  1398. the list

  1399. is that for

  1400. you?

  1401. as you

  1402. date and

  1403. evaluate the

  1404. potential of

  1405. a future

  1406. with somebody,

  1407. put this

  1408. first,

  1409. do they

  1410. know the

  1411. Lord?

  1412. Are they

  1413. committed to

  1414. walking with

  1415. you in a

  1416. Christ-honoring

  1417. marriage?

  1418. Do you

  1419. share a

  1420. common vision

  1421. for the

  1422. spiritual

  1423. health of

  1424. your home?

  1425. Here we

  1426. see another

  1427. apparent threat

  1428. to the

  1429. promise of

  1430. God.

  1431. The land

  1432. is insufficient,

  1433. it's famished,

  1434. it's occupied

  1435. by the enemy,

  1436. it's causing

  1437. problems for

  1438. Abram's

  1439. family and

  1440. Lot chooses

  1441. the most

  1442. attractive portion

  1443. and here is

  1444. Abram left

  1445. in a desert

  1446. without any

  1447. family and

  1448. he's wondering

  1449. will God

  1450. fulfill his

  1451. promise?

  1452. How will

  1453. God fulfill

  1454. the promises

  1455. that he's

  1456. made?

  1457. Look down

  1458. to verse

  1459. 14.

  1460. God

  1461. speaks

  1462. and he

  1463. assures

  1464. Abram once

  1465. again,

  1466. no

  1467. threat,

  1468. will

  1469. overcome

  1470. my

  1471. promise.

  1472. The Lord

  1473. said to

  1474. Abram,

  1475. after Lot

  1476. separated

  1477. from him,

  1478. lift up

  1479. your eyes

  1480. and look

  1481. from the

  1482. place where

  1483. you are

  1484. northward

  1485. and southward

  1486. and eastward

  1487. and westward

  1488. for all

  1489. the land

  1490. that you

  1491. see I

  1492. will give

  1493. to you

  1494. and to

  1495. your

  1496. offspring

  1497. forever.

  1498. I will

  1499. make your

  1500. offspring

  1501. as the

  1502. dust

  1503. of the

  1504. earth

  1505. so that

  1506. if one

  1507. can count

  1508. the dust

  1509. of the

  1510. earth,

  1511. your

  1512. offspring

  1513. also

  1514. can be

  1515. !

  1516. Arise,

  1517. walk

  1518. through

  1519. the

  1520. length

  1521. and

  1522. breadth

  1523. of

  1524. the

  1525. land

  1526. for

  1527. I

  1528. will

  1529. give

  1530. it

  1531. to

  1532. you.

  1533. So

  1534. Abram

  1535. moved

  1536. his

  1537. tent

  1538. and

  1539. came

  1540. and

  1541. settled

  1542. by the

  1543. oaks

  1544. of

  1545. Mamre

  1546. which

  1547. are

  1548. at

  1549. Hebron

  1550. and

  1551. there

  1552. he

  1553. built

  1554. an

  1555. altar

  1556. to

  1557. the

  1558. Lord.

  1559. In

  1560. other

  1561. words,

  1562. God

  1563. says,

  1564. Abram,

  1565. no

  1566. threat

  1567. can

  1568. cancel

  1569. out

  1570. my

  1571. promise.

  1572. You

  1573. may

  1574. mess

  1575. up

  1576. a

  1577. thousand

  1578. times

  1579. but

  1580. I

  1581. will

  1582. make

  1583. your

  1584. offspring

  1585. as

  1586. the

  1587. dust

  1588. of

  1589. the

  1590. earth.

  1591. Others

  1592. may

  1593. sin

  1594. against

  1595. you

  1596. and

  1597. be

  1598. selfish

  1599. and

  1600. take

  1601. what

  1602. looks

  1603. best

  1604. to

  1605. the

  1606. naked

  1607. eye

  1608. but

  1609. walk

  1610. through

  1611. the

  1612. land

  1613. I

  1614. will

  1615. give

  1616. it

  1617. to

  1618. you.

  1619. No

  1620. threat

  1621. from

  1622. within

  1623. no

  1624. threat

  1625. from

  1626. without

  1627. can

  1628. cancel

  1629. out

  1630. my

  1631. promise

  1632. when

  1633. I

  1634. speak

  1635. and

  1636. when

  1637. I

  1638. promise

  1639. I

  1640. will

  1641. accomplish

  1642. everything

  1643. I

  1644. say

  1645. to

  1646. you.

  1647. Certainly

  1648. Abram

  1649. would

  1650. be

  1651. assured

  1652. and

  1653. comforted

  1654. by

  1655. this

  1656. but

  1657. church

  1658. now

  1659. let me

  1660. tell you

  1661. why

  1662. this

  1663. is so

  1664. good

  1665. for

  1666. us

  1667. because

  1668. this

  1669. has

  1670. everything

  1671. to do

  1672. with

  1673. us

  1674. in

  1675. Christ

  1676. God

  1677. has

  1678. made

  1679. promises

  1680. to

  1681. us

  1682. in

  1683. Christ

  1684. in

  1685. fact

  1686. we saw

  1687. last

  1688. week

  1689. and

  1690. we'll

  1691. see

  1692. over

  1693. and

  1694. over

  1695. and

  1696. over

  1697. and

  1698. over

  1699. again

  1700. throughout

  1701. Abram's

  1702. story

  1703. we

  1704. are

  1705. the

  1706. heirs

  1707. of

  1708. these

  1709. promises

  1710. by

  1711. faith

  1712. in

  1713. Christ

  1714. it

  1715. is

  1716. those

  1717. who

  1718. share

  1719. the

  1720. faith

  1721. of

  1722. Abraham

  1723. who

  1724. are

  1725. children

  1726. of

  1727. Abraham

  1728. and

  1729. heirs

  1730. of

  1731. the

  1732. promises

  1733. Paul

  1734. says

  1735. in

  1736. Galatians

  1737. 3

  1738. so

  1739. here

  1740. again

  1741. we

  1742. have

  1743. layers

  1744. to

  1745. these

  1746. promises

  1747. layers

  1748. to

  1749. these

  1750. promises

  1751. here

  1752. in

  1753. the

  1754. Old

  1755. Testament

  1756. on

  1757. one

  1758. layer

  1759. on

  1760. one

  1761. level

  1762. yes

  1763. we

  1764. can

  1765. look

  1766. forward

  1767. and

  1768. see

  1769. how

  1770. God

  1771. fulfills

  1772. his

  1773. promise

  1774. to

  1775. Abraham

  1776. he

  1777. gives

  1778. him

  1779. physical

  1780. children

  1781. Isaac

  1782. and

  1783. then

  1784. through

  1785. Isaac

  1786. the

  1787. whole

  1788. nation

  1789. of

  1790. Israel

  1791. those

  1792. who

  1793. are

  1794. his

  1795. offspring

  1796. according

  1797. to

  1798. the

  1799. flesh

  1800. !

  1801. and

  1802. we

  1803. can

  1804. look

  1805. forward

  1806. and

  1807. see

  1808. how

  1809. on

  1810. one

  1811. level

  1812. God

  1813. fulfills

  1814. his

  1815. promise

  1816. to

  1817. Israel

  1818. and

  1819. brings

  1820. them

  1821. into

  1822. the

  1823. promised

  1824. land

  1825. of

  1826. Canaan

  1827. but hear

  1828. me

  1829. that

  1830. is

  1831. not

  1832. the

  1833. whole

  1834. picture

  1835. that

  1836. is

  1837. temporary

  1838. and

  1839. partial

  1840. there

  1841. are

  1842. greater

  1843. promises

  1844. at play

  1845. here

  1846. than

  1847. just

  1848. a

  1849. physical

  1850. offspring

  1851. in

  1852. just

  1853. a

  1854. small

  1855. patch

  1856. of

  1857. dirt

  1858. over

  1859. in

  1860. the

  1861. Middle

  1862. East

  1863. these

  1864. promises

  1865. !

  1866. all

  1867. God's

  1868. promises

  1869. are

  1870. ultimately

  1871. expanded

  1872. and

  1873. fulfilled

  1874. and

  1875. extended

  1876. to

  1877. us

  1878. in

  1879. such

  1880. a

  1881. way

  1882. that

  1883. no

  1884. threat

  1885. can

  1886. ever

  1887. remove

  1888. them

  1889. in

  1890. Jesus

  1891. Christ

  1892. the

  1893. promised

  1894. son

  1895. of

  1896. Abraham

  1897. who

  1898. can

  1899. number

  1900. the

  1901. church

  1902. who

  1903. can

  1904. count

  1905. the

  1906. number

  1907. of

  1908. God's

  1909. people

  1910. throughout

  1911. the

  1912. ages

  1913. all

  1914. those

  1915. who

  1916. by

  1917. faith

  1918. have

  1919. trusted

  1920. in

  1921. the

  1922. promises

  1923. of

  1924. God

  1925. they

  1926. are

  1927. more

  1928. numerous

  1929. than

  1930. the

  1931. sand

  1932. on

  1933. the

  1934. shore

  1935. more

  1936. numerous

  1937. than

  1938. all

  1939. the

  1940. stars

  1941. in

  1942. the

  1943. sky

  1944. you know

  1945. John

  1946. saw

  1947. this

  1948. in

  1949. revelation

  1950. and

  1951. he

  1952. spoke

  1953. about

  1954. it

  1955. he

  1956. said

  1957. there

  1958. was

  1959. a

  1960. great

  1961. multitude

  1962. that

  1963. no

  1964. one

  1965. could

  1966. number

  1967. from

  1968. every

  1969. nation

  1970. from

  1971. all

  1972. tribes

  1973. and

  1974. peoples

  1975. and

  1976. languages

  1977. !

  1978. standing

  1979. before

  1980. the

  1981. throne

  1982. and

  1983. before

  1984. the

  1985. lamb

  1986. clothed

  1987. in

  1988. white

  1989. robes

  1990. with

  1991. palm

  1992. branches

  1993. in

  1994. their

  1995. hands

  1996. and

  1997. crying

  1998. out

  1999. at

  2000. the

  2001. loud

  2002. voice

  2003. salvation

  2004. belongs

  2005. to

  2006. our

  2007. God

  2008. who

  2009. sits

  2010. on

  2011. the

  2012. throne

  2013. and

  2014. to

  2015. the

  2016. lamb

  2017. this

  2018. is

  2019. your

  2020. future

  2021. if you

  2022. are

  2023. in

  2024. Christ

  2025. God

  2026. promises

  2027. to

  2028. adopt

  2029. you

  2030. as a

  2031. son

  2032. as a

  2033. daughter

  2034. and

  2035. to

  2036. give

  2037. you

  2038. infinite

  2039. eternal

  2040. unshakable

  2041. joy

  2042. that

  2043. spills

  2044. over

  2045. into

  2046. praise

  2047. and

  2048. worship

  2049. for the

  2050. rest

  2051. of

  2052. eternity

  2053. in

  2054. a

  2055. countless

  2056. company

  2057. of

  2058. other

  2059. redeemed

  2060. sinners

  2061. just

  2062. like

  2063. yourself

  2064. from

  2065. all

  2066. nations

  2067. of

  2068. the

  2069. earth

  2070. by

  2071. faith

  2072. in

  2073. Christ

  2074. what

  2075. a

  2076. promise

  2077. here's

  2078. another

  2079. God

  2080. promises

  2081. you

  2082. all

  2083. the

  2084. earth

  2085. as

  2086. an

  2087. inheritance

  2088. in

  2089. Christ

  2090. Canaan

  2091. isn't

  2092. big

  2093. enough

  2094. to host

  2095. all this

  2096. multitude

  2097. Paul

  2098. tells us

  2099. in

  2100. Romans

    Romans 4:13

  2101. 4

  2102. verse

  2103. 13

  2104. he says

  2105. the

  2106. promise

  2107. to

  2108. Abraham

  2109. and

  2110. his

  2111. offspring

  2112. was

  2113. that

  2114. he

  2115. would

  2116. be

  2117. heir

  2118. of

  2119. the

  2120. world

  2121. Canaan

  2122. is

  2123. too

  2124. small

  2125. our

  2126. inheritance

  2127. the promise

  2128. made to

  2129. Abraham

  2130. received

  2131. by faith

  2132. in

  2133. Christ

  2134. is

  2135. all

  2136. the

  2137. world

  2138. the

  2337. no

  2352. take

  2353. these

  2355. away

  2356. he

  2357. who

  2358. did

  2359. not

  2360. spare

  2361. his

  2364. but

  2365. gave

  2366. him

  2367. up

  2368. for

  2369. us

  2370. all

  2371. how

  2372. will

  2373. he

  2375. also

  2376. with

  2377. him

  2378. graciously

  2379. !

  2380. give us

  2381. all

  2383. What's

  2384. our

  2385. assurance

  2386. that all

  2387. this will

  2388. come to

  2389. pass?

  2390. It's not

  2391. us

  2392. it's not

  2393. our own

  2394. goodness

  2395. it's not

  2396. our own

  2397. perfection

  2398. goodness

  2399. no

  2400. we

  2401. look

  2402. to

  2403. Christ

  2404. and

  2405. see

  2406. the

  2407. faithfulness

  2408. of God

  2409. displayed

  2410. we

  2411. look

  2412. to

  2413. Christ

  2414. and

  2415. see

  2416. all

  2417. of

  2418. God's

  2419. promises

  2420. are

  2421. fulfilled

  2422. in

  2423. him

  2424. Christ

  2425. Jesus

  2426. came

  2427. and

  2428. lived

  2429. and

  2430. died

  2431. and

  2432. rose

  2433. to

  2434. secure

  2435. for

  2436. us

  2437. his

  2441. all

  2442. the

  2445. God

  2446. we

  2447. look

  2448. to

  2449. Christ

  2450. we

  2451. rejoice

  2452. that

  2453. Christ

  2454. is

  2455. not

  2456. like

  2457. Abram

  2458. who

  2459. traded

  2460. in

  2461. his

  2462. bride

  2463. to

  2472. blessed

  2473. we

  2474. rejoice

  2475. that

  2476. Christ

  2477. Jesus

  2478. gave

  2479. his

  2480. life

  2481. to

  2482. save

  2483. his

  2484. bride

  2485. that

  2486. we

  2487. might

  2488. be

  2489. blessed

  2490. in

  2491. him

  2492. you

  2493. see

  2494. how

  2495. good

  2496. this

  2497. is

  2498. sinner

  2499. rejoice

  2500. that

  2501. your

  2502. weakness

  2503. cannot

  2504. nullify

  2505. God's

  2506. promises

  2507. to

  2508. you

  2509. in

  2510. Christ

  2511. your

  2512. failure

  2513. cannot

  2514. cancel

  2515. God's

  2517. to

  2518. you

  2519. in

  2520. Christ

  2521. your

  2522. sin

  2523. is

  2524. insufficient

  2525. to

  2526. overpower

  2527. God's

  2528. grace

  2529. given

  2530. to

  2531. you

  2532. by

  2533. faith

  2534. in

  2535. Christ

  2536. if

  2537. you

  2538. are

  2539. in

  2540. Christ

  2541. by

  2542. faith

  2543. here's

  2544. our

  2545. assurance

  2546. God

  2547. who

  2548. began

  2549. a

  2550. good

  2551. work

  2552. in

  2553. you

  2554. will

  2555. bring

  2556. it

  2557. to

  2558. completion

  2559. at

  2560. the

  2561. day

  2562. of

  2563. Christ

  2564. no

  2568. you

  2569. from

  2570. his

  2571. hand

  2572. God

  2573. will

  2574. defend

  2575. his

  2577. those

  2578. from

  2579. within

  2580. and

  2581. those
