  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up to Genesis chapter 14 this morning.

    Genesis 14 chapter mention

  2. And our passage is all of chapter 14 this morning.

  3. You know, somebody asked me again this morning,

  4. are you really going to read that whole list of names and places?

  5. You know, we could skip some of that if you really wanted to.

  6. And I just, you know, have I been with you so long and you don't know me?

  7. All scripture is God breathed and profitable and useful.

  8. And we will stand and read all of Genesis chapter 14.

    Genesis 14 chapter mention

  9. Let's stand in honor of the reading of God's word this morning.

  10. Be gracious to me, please.

  11. In the days of Amraphel, king of Shinar,

  12. Ariok, king of Elessar,

  13. Kedor-Lehomer, king of Elam,

  14. and Tidal king of Goim.

  15. These kings made war with Bera, king of Sodom,

  16. Bersha, king of Gomorrah,

  17. Shinab, king of Adma,

  18. Shemaber, king of Zeboim,

  19. and the king of Bila, that is, Zoar.

  20. And all these joined forces in the valley of Sidim,

  21. that is, the Salt Sea.

  22. Twelve years they had served Kedor-Lehomer,

  23. but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

  24. In the fourteenth year,

  25. Kedor-Lehomer and the kings who were with him

  26. came and defeated the Rephaim and the Ashtaroth-Karnaim,

  27. the Zuzim and Ham,

  28. the Emim and Shabba-Kiriathim,

  29. and the Horites in their hill country of Seir,

  30. as far as El-Paran on the border of the wilderness.

  31. Then they turned back and came to En-Mishpat,

  32. that is, Kadesh,

  33. and defeated all the country of the Amalekites

  34. and also the Amorites who were dwelling in Hezazon-Tamar.

  35. Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah,

  36. the king of Adma, the king of Zeboim,

  37. and the king of Bila, that is, Zoar,

  38. went out and they joined battle in the valley of Sidim

  39. with Keter-Lehomer, king of Elam,

  40. Tidal king of Goim,

  41. Amraphel, king of Shinar,

  42. and Ariok, king of Elessar,

  43. four kings against five.

  44. Now the valley of Sidim was full of bitumen pits,

  45. and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled,

  46. some fell into them,

  47. and the rest fled to the hill country.

  48. So the enemy took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah

  49. and all their provisions and went their way.

  50. They also took Lot, the son of Abram's brother,

  51. who was dwelling in Sodom,

  52. and his possessions and went their way.

  53. Then one who had escaped came and told Abram,

  54. the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre,

  55. the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner.

  56. These were allies of Abram.

  57. And when Abram heard that his kinsmen had been taken captive,

  58. he led forth his trained men born in his house,

  59. 318 of them,

  60. and went in pursuit as far as Dan.

  61. And he divided his forces against them by night,

  62. he and his servants,

  63. and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah,

  64. north of Damascus.

  65. Then he brought back all the possessions

  66. and also brought back his kinsmen Lot with his possessions

  67. and the women and the people.

  68. After his return from the defeat of Keter-Lehomer

  69. and the kings who were with him,

  70. the king of Sodom went out to meet him

  71. at the valley of Shabbat,

  72. that is, the king's valley.

  73. And Melchizedek, king of Salem,

  74. brought out bread and wine.

  75. He was priest of God Most High.

  76. And he blessed him and said,

  77. Blessed be Abram by God Most High,

  78. possessor of heaven and earth.

  79. And blessed be God Most High,

  80. who has delivered your enemies into your hand.

  81. And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

  82. And the king of Sodom said to Abram,

  83. Give me the persons,

  84. but take the goods for yourself.

  85. But Abram said to the king of Sodom,

  86. I have lifted my hand to the Lord God Most High,

  87. possessor of heaven and earth,

  88. that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap

  89. or anything that is yours,

  90. lest you should say,

  91. I have made Abram rich.

  92. I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten

  93. and the share of the men who went with me.

  94. Let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.

  95. Grass withers, flower fades,

  96. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  97. Father, we praise you for this passage of scripture.

  98. We praise you for your commitment to your promises.

  99. And we pray now that as we read of them once again,

  100. developing in Abram's life,

  101. that we would be reminded and encouraged

  102. by your commitment to your promises towards us in Christ.

  103. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  104. Amen.

  105. You may be seated.

  106. We are in a pretty incredible section of scripture here

  107. in the story of Abram,

  108. and we've seen over the past few weeks

  109. that God has made some incredible promises to Abram.

  110. Promises that ultimately find their fulfillment in Christ

  111. and then come to us by faith.

  112. So chapter 12, we saw him promise,

  113. I will make you a great nation.

  114. I will bless you.

  115. I will make your name great

  116. so that you will be a blessing.

  117. I will bless those who bless you,

  118. and him who dishonors you I will curse.

  119. And in you all the families of the earth

  120. will be blessed.

  121. And he promised to your offspring,

  122. I will give this land.

  123. I will make your offspring as dust of the earth

  124. so that if one can count the dust of the earth,

  125. your offspring can also be counted.

  126. That was chapter 13.

  127. These are incredible promises.

  128. And we saw last week that no threat,

  129. whether internal or external,

  130. can ever nullify the promises of God.

  131. God will accomplish all his promises

  132. ultimately in Christ.

  133. This passage is another demonstration

  134. of God's commitment to his promises.

  135. This morning we see that Abram faces yet again

  136. two more threats to the promises.

  137. And we see the threat of war here

  138. in the first half of the chapter there

  139. in verses 1 through 16.

  140. There's war in the land.

  141. And then we see this threat of temptation

  142. in the back half of the chapter

  143. in verses 17 through 24.

  144. But once again, through it all,

  145. we see God's promises succeed.

  146. So let's take a look and we'll see

  147. two more promises for God's people.

  148. This will be our outline this morning

  149. if you're taking notes.

  150. Two more promises for God's people.

  151. First, God promises his people success in the battle.

  152. God promises his people success in the battle.

  153. Chapter 14 starts off detailing this war

  154. in the ancient Near East.

  155. You all didn't really give me the round of applause

  156. I was hoping for reading all those names and places.

  157. I'm going to try not to rehearse

  158. as many of those as I can.

  159. There's four kings against five here.

  160. We really have no idea,

  161. no information about these kings.

  162. They just kind of show up here in the story.

  163. And they're fighting.

  164. They're going to war.

  165. It kind of feels like we press play on the movie

  166. about halfway through, doesn't it?

  167. We don't have the context that we wish that we had.

  168. But if nothing else, what it illustrates for us again

  169. is how far we have fallen.

  170. You remember, we're just 12, 13 chapters away

  171. from the Garden of Eden.

  172. Adam and Eve dwelling in perfect paradise.

  173. Perfect harmony with God and with one another.

  174. There is no war.

  175. There is no violence.

  176. There is no death.

  177. But now sin has come in,

  178. disrupted God's good creation.

  179. And now we see nation at war with nation.

  180. God dispersed the nations at the Tower of Babel

  181. and now they are coming against each other in war.

  182. And as we look out of these four walls

  183. at the nations around us,

  184. you realize this is still going on today, isn't it?

  185. As we look out and see nations warring against nation,

  186. in our time, we should be reminded

  187. at the root of all of this

  188. is that same old issue called sin.

  189. So here are these five kings.

  190. They're from the Dead Sea area

  191. and they have,

  192. apparently they've served as vassals of this guy,

  193. Kedor Leomer, for 12 years,

  194. meaning they've likely paid him tribute,

  195. given him money and come up under his authority.

  196. But it seems like now they've had enough

  197. and so in the 13th year, they rebel.

  198. Kedor Leomer doesn't get his check.

  199. And so in response, verses five through seven,

  200. show us that Kedor Leomer and his bodies,

  201. they go on a rampage through the ancient world.

  202. They strike the Rephaites,

  203. they strike the Zuzites and the Horites,

  204. the Amalekites, the Amorites.

  205. These guys weren't even involved in the conflict.

  206. They weren't even involved in the rebellion,

  207. but now they're kind of tossed in

  208. as collateral in this war.

  209. And my only assumption is that

  210. Kedor Leomer and his buddies

  211. were trying to bolster their troops,

  212. their forces by conquering

  213. all these nearby territories,

  214. strengthen numbers.

  215. And so he comes down like a tornado

  216. and he gathers up,

  217. picks up everything they can on the way

  218. in order to come and squash this rebellion.

  219. And by the time they arrive here in Hazazon Tamar,

  220. they're now on the western side of the Dead Sea

  221. and now the battle begins.

  222. The king of Sodom,

  223. the king of Gomorrah,

  224. the king of Adma,

  225. the king of Zeboim,

  226. the king of Bila,

  227. all come out and they go to war.

  228. Verse 10.

  229. It tells us that this valley of Sidim

  230. was full of tar pits,

  231. bitumen pits.

  232. The king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah,

  233. they probably were realizing

  234. that their defeat was inevitable

  235. and so they fell into them.

  236. In other words,

  237. they tossed themselves in,

  238. in defeat,

  239. and everyone else runs away

  240. to the highlands.

  241. Keterleomer and his buddies,

  242. they took away all the properties

  243. of Sodom and Gomorrah,

  244. they took all their food,

  245. they went away,

  246. and oh, by the way,

  247. they also took Lot,

  248. Abram's nephew,

  249. and all of his property,

  250. and they went away with Lot

  251. for, it says,

  252. Lot had been living in Sodom.

  253. So now we see why this is relevant

  254. for us to know, don't we?

  255. Lot is there in Sodom.

  256. The last time we saw Lot,

  257. he was living in the direction of Zoar

  258. near Sodom,

  259. but now it looks like

  260. he has fully settled in.

  261. He's now a resident of Sodom,

  262. and now he finds himself

  263. as a prisoner of war.

  264. Verse 13 tells us

  265. an escapee comes,

  266. and he shares all of this with Abram,

  267. and now the question is,

  268. how is Abram going to respond?

  269. How is Abram going to respond?

  270. Because last time we saw Abram and Lot,

  271. you remember things weren't going well for them,

  272. or it wasn't,

  273. or they weren't really on good terms.

  274. They had separated,

  275. they agreed that it would be best

  276. to just go their separate ways,

  277. because the longer they stayed together,

  278. the more they were going to argue

  279. and fight with one another,

  280. so they dispersed.

  281. But now,

  282. Abram gets word,

  283. hey Abram,

  284. your nephew,

  285. the one who stepped all over your toes

  286. in the promised land,

  287. the one who then grabbed the best land

  288. he could possibly get,

  289. the one who left you high and dry in a desert,

  290. while he went and took the well-watered land

  291. near Sodom,

  292. he's in trouble,

  293. so how will Abram respond?

  294. I wonder what you would do.

  295. How would you respond?

  296. You all have had family issues,

  297. you've had people that have offended you,

  298. you've had people that have stepped on your toes,

  299. you've had people that have wronged you

  300. and sinned against you,

  301. you might be in a fight right now.

  302. You may be convinced that you are right.

  303. They wronged you.

  304. How would you respond

  305. if the one who offended you is in trouble?

  306. Well, we're told that right away,

  307. what does Abram do?

  308. Right away,

  309. Abram goes to war

  310. on behalf of Lot.

  311. When Abram heard that his relative

  312. had been taken captive,

  313. he mustered his 318 trained men

  314. once born in his house

  315. and went in pursuit as far as Dan.

  316. You know, that's over 100 miles away.

  317. And he plans this nighttime attack.

  318. He divides the troops.

  319. He strategizes this attack.

  320. He goes in there like Rambo.

  321. He goes in right into the battle,

  322. starts chasing down these kings

  323. and their armies.

  324. And it says he chases them

  325. all the way up to Hobah.

  326. That's north of Damascus.

  327. That's another 40 miles or so.

  328. And most importantly,

  329. he wins.

  330. Abram recovers all the property.

  331. He defeats these rebel kings

  332. and he recovers Lot

  333. and everything that Lot owns.

  334. And we see Abram very quickly

  335. and very eagerly,

  336. he risks his own life

  337. and gives everything he can

  338. to go and rescue Lot,

  339. even when Lot didn't deserve it.

  340. Now, who does that sound like to you?

  341. Abram very clearly here

  342. is showing us a picture of Christ.

  343. I wonder,

  344. do you find it hard to forgive people

  345. when they wrong you?

  346. Do you find it hard for you

  347. to let go of anger,

  348. let go of resentment,

  349. find it hard to just let go

  350. of the tension that there might be

  351. when someone you know

  352. they are at fault

  353. and they have sinned against you?

  354. Why in the world would you

  355. go out of your way

  356. to make it right with them?

  357. Well,

  358. because we have been

  359. radically forgiven

  360. by the grace of God in Christ.

  361. Whatever wrong somebody has done to you,

  362. it isn't even worth comparing

  363. to our sin against God.

  364. And yet God,

  365. in His love for sinners,

  366. sent Christ,

  367. who loves His enemies,

  368. Christ who came a great distance

  369. from heaven down to earth,

  370. Christ who came to pursue sinners like us,

  371. Christ who gave His life

  372. to rescue enemies of God,

  373. who were enslaved

  374. by the powers of sin and darkness,

  375. Christ who spared no expense,

  376. who leveraged every resource

  377. to crush the powers of sin and evil,

  378. Christ came and rescued us

  379. and reconciled us to God.

  380. Jesus did that for us,

  381. those who deserve it least.

  382. And if He's done that for us,

  383. then surely,

  384. of all people,

  385. Christians ought to be quick

  386. to forgive others.

  387. This is what Paul tells us

  388. in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  389. He says,

  390. Be kind to one another,

  391. tenderhearted,

  392. forgiving one another

  393. as God in Christ forgave you.

  394. Abram shows Lot here,

  395. unmerited forgiveness.

  396. But notice also what's happening here

  397. with Abram.

  398. In light of the promises of God,

  399. we're seeing this promised blessing

  400. unfold here in Abram's life,

  401. aren't we?

  402. You remember God promised

  403. to multiply Abram.

  404. God promised to make Abram

  405. a great nation.

  406. And now here,

  407. we see Abram has 318 trained men

  408. that are born in His own house.

  409. That's incredible, isn't it?

  410. He is multiplying

  411. before our very eyes.

  412. Of course,

  413. we know these aren't

  414. His own offspring.

  415. These are just members

  416. of His camp.

  417. But we see His camp

  418. is enlarging.

  419. There's a threat here.

  420. The land is occupied

  421. by enemy kings.

  422. They're waging war

  423. against each other.

  424. But here is Abram

  425. literally going to war.

  426. Now here he is,

  427. again,

  428. peeling back the influence

  429. of the enemy

  430. in the land

  431. and gaining territory

  432. for the kingdom of God.

  433. God promised

  434. to multiply His offspring

  435. and give Him the land.

  436. And so it's like

  437. He's invincible.

  438. He doesn't even hesitate

  439. to go in

  440. and to go to war

  441. and join the battle.

  442. And again,

  443. as we look forwards

  444. and filter this through

  445. God's promises

  446. for us in Christ,

  447. we see here

  448. just a small picture

  449. of our mission

  450. as a church

  451. and the confidence

  452. that we ought to have

  453. in light of the promises

  454. of God.

  455. God's people,

  456. both then and now,

  457. are in a battle

  458. with the powers

  459. of sin and darkness.

  460. On this side of the cross

  461. where we are,

  462. we aren't taking up arms

  463. and we aren't

  464. bearing physical weapons

  465. and going to war

  466. with physical nations,

  467. but church,

  468. you realize we are still

  469. very much in a battle,

  470. don't you?

  471. We're called to take up

  472. the whole armor of God

  473. and stand against

  474. the schemes of the devil.

  475. For we do not wrestle

  476. against flesh and blood,

  477. but against the rulers,

  478. against the authorities,

  479. against the cosmic powers

  480. over this present darkness,

  481. against the spiritual forces

  482. of evil

  483. in the heavenly places.

  484. We are still at war.

  485. We're called

  486. as God's people

  487. to go and to conquer

  488. the enemies of God,

  489. to go and gain ground

  490. from the enemy.

  491. And how do we do that?

  492. Not with sword and spear,

  493. but by taking the good news

  494. of the gospel

  495. to the ends of the earth.

  496. That's the battle command

  497. of Christ,

  498. our King, isn't it?

  499. Go and make disciples

  500. of all nations,

  501. baptizing them

  502. in the name of the Father

  503. and the Son

  504. and the Holy Spirit,

  505. teaching them to obey

  506. all I've commanded you.

  507. That's our mission.

  508. And what's the promise?

  509. He says,

  510. all authority in heaven

  511. and on earth

  512. has been given to me.

  513. And surely I am with you

  514. until the end of the age.

  515. Church,

  516. God has promised us

  517. victory in Christ.

  518. As we go about

  519. obeying His command,

  520. in fact,

  521. He has already conquered

  522. every enemy

  523. at the cross of Christ.

  524. The snake has been crushed

  525. at the cross of Christ.

  526. He is a defeated enemy.

  527. He prowls around

  528. like a roaring lion,

  529. yes,

  530. but He is a wounded enemy.

  531. He is a lion on a leash.

  532. And one day,

  533. He will finally be destroyed

  534. at the return of Christ.

  535. In the meantime,

  536. as we wage war

  537. against the forces of darkness,

  538. remember that we wage war

  539. against a defeated enemy.

  540. We worship a risen King,

  541. one who's triumphed

  542. over sin and death

  543. and the devil,

  544. one who has come

  545. to set the captives free.

  546. We fight in a battle

  547. already won in Christ.

  548. So we see God has promised

  549. His people victory

  550. in battle.

  551. That's one promise.

  552. Here in verses 17 through 24,

  553. we see another.

  554. Second,

  555. another promise of God

  556. for His people.

  557. Second,

  558. we see God

  559. has promised His people

  560. blessing by faith.

  561. God has promised His people

  562. blessing

  563. by faith.

  564. Look there to verse 17.

  565. And we see

  566. immediately after this victory

  567. in battle,

  568. what happens?

  569. Abram faces a temptation

  570. here at the end of the passage.

  571. Isn't that how it always goes?

  572. The enemy is not dumb.

  573. He's clever, isn't he?

  574. He knows that the best time

  575. to tempt someone

  576. is not really when they're

  577. geared up and full of adrenaline

  578. and ready to go to war.

  579. He waits,

  580. he bides his time

  581. until that battle is over

  582. and you're tired,

  583. you're ready to celebrate

  584. and you've won

  585. and your guard is down.

  586. That's when the temptation comes.

  587. That's exactly what's happening

  588. here with Abram.

  589. Look there at verse 17.

  590. It says,

  591. these two kings

  592. come out to meet Abram

  593. in the king's valley.

  594. And what I want you to see

  595. is that

  596. these two kings

  597. represent

  598. two

  599. very different

  600. paths of blessing

  601. for Abram

  602. and for us.

  603. The first king

  604. to come out

  605. is the king

  606. of Sodom.

  607. Now what in the world

  608. is he doing here?

  609. You remember

  610. what we already know

  611. about Sodom.

  612. These people,

  613. we were told,

  614. are great sinners

  615. against the Lord.

  616. What does this king

  617. want with Abram?

  618. We'll come back to him.

  619. But the second king

  620. is this mysterious figure

  621. named Melchizedek,

  622. king of Salem.

  623. Who in the world

  624. is that?

  625. And we don't really

  626. know much about him,

  627. do we?

  628. Again,

  629. he comes out unannounced.

  630. He comes out

  631. to bless Abram.

  632. This guy,

  633. Melchizedek,

  634. comes,

  635. he sets the table,

  636. he plays host,

  637. he brings out

  638. bread and wine

  639. and he blesses Abram

  640. in the name

  641. of the Lord.

  642. He says,

  643. blessed be Abram

  644. by God most high,

  645. possessor of heaven

  646. and earth.

  647. And blessed be

  648. God most high

  649. who has delivered

  650. your enemies

  651. into your hand.

  652. And in response,

  653. we see Abram,

  654. he pays a tithe.

  655. He gives him 10%.

  656. He gives him

  657. a tenth of everything.

  658. He pays tithes

  659. to this mysterious king.

  660. Who is this guy,

  661. Melchizedek?

  662. Melchizedek.

  663. It really is

  664. very strange.

  665. We don't know

  666. much about him.

  667. He shows up unannounced.

  668. We have no

  669. genealogical record

  670. of his birth.

  671. His origins

  672. are a mystery.

  673. And then after this moment

  674. in the book of Genesis,

  675. he's gone.

  676. He never shows up again.

  677. Well,

  678. what do we

  679. know about him?

  680. Well,

  681. we know his name

  682. for one thing.

  683. Melchizedek

  684. means king

  685. of righteousness.

  686. Melchizedek

  687. is two Hebrew words.

  688. King of righteousness.

  689. And right away,

  690. we're meant to see

  691. a contrast here

  692. with the king of Sodom.

  693. Again,

  694. king of Sodom,

  695. he's king of a city

  696. of wicked people.

  697. We might call him

  698. king of wickedness.

  699. But in contrast,

  700. here comes Melchizedek,

  701. whoever he is,

  702. king of righteousness.

  703. You see the contrast.

  704. Not only that,

  705. but we also know

  706. he's king of Salem,

  707. which means,

  708. again,

  709. by translation,

  710. he is king of peace.

  711. He's king

  712. of the ancient city

  713. of Jerusalem.

  714. Long before

  715. the days of David,

  716. Sodom was right here

  717. in the middle

  718. of this war.

  719. He's a man of rebellion,

  720. a man of violence.

  721. But this king of Salem,

  722. he wasn't even a part

  723. of the battle.

  724. He's a king

  725. of peace.

  726. But he's not just king,

  727. is he?

  728. Verse 18

  729. tells us he is a priest

  730. as well.

  731. But not just any priest.

  732. It says he is a priest

  733. of God Most High.

  734. That's very unusual.

  735. Isn't it interesting

  736. that this mysterious king

  737. seems to know God

  738. and to worship God alone?

  739. This mysterious king,

  740. he recognizes God Most High

  741. as creator of all things,

  742. heaven and earth.

  743. He recognizes God alone

  744. as the source

  745. of Abram's blessing.

  746. He recognizes God alone

  747. as the one who

  748. granted Abram victory

  749. in the battle.

  750. And he knows

  751. that any blessing

  752. that's going to come

  753. to Abram

  754. has to come from God

  755. and God alone.

  756. Who is this guy?

  757. Now all of these factors

  758. combined have led

  759. some to say

  760. this must be

  761. the pre-incarnate Christ.

  762. This must be Jesus.

  763. The Son of God.

  764. And while I get it,

  765. I'm not sure

  766. that I can go

  767. quite that far.

  768. But what we can say

  769. with confidence

  770. is that at the very least

  771. this Melchizedek

  772. is a shadow

  773. to which Christ

  774. is the substance.

  775. He is a pointer

  776. pointing us forward

  777. to the true king

  778. of righteousness,

  779. Christ.

  780. He is pointing us forward

  781. towards the true king

  782. of peace,

  783. Christ.

  784. He is pointing us forward

  785. to the one

  786. who is true prophet

  787. and priest

  788. and king.

  789. The one who is

  790. truly eternal God

  791. without beginning

  792. or end.

  793. Christ who is

  794. the source

  795. of all blessing

  796. for God's people.

  797. He is the one

  798. who is a priest

  799. forever

  800. after the order

  801. of Melchizedek.

  802. Well this mystery

  803. is interrupted

  804. for a moment

  805. here in verse 21

  806. again by the king

  807. of Sodom.

  808. I said this was

  809. a temptation

  810. for Abram

  811. and here it is.

  812. The king of Sodom

  813. speaks up

  814. and he says

  815. you give me

  816. the people

  817. but you take

  818. all the goods

  819. for yourself.

  820. Give me

  821. the people

  822. and I

  823. will bless

  824. you

  825. with the spoils

  826. of war.

  827. Again notice

  828. the contrast.

  829. Not a blessing

  830. in the name

  831. of God most high

  832. like Melchizedek.

  833. Rather

  834. a blessing

  835. that would come

  836. from king

  837. of Sodom.

  838. You can imagine

  839. the temptation

  840. can't you?

  841. Abram has just

  842. worked hard

  843. and he has just

  844. gone to war

  845. against multiple

  846. kings

  847. and their armies

  848. and surely he has

  849. to be thinking

  850. on one level

  851. I've earned

  852. this blessing.

  853. Right?

  854. I deserve

  855. this blessing.

  856. I want

  857. this blessing.

  858. Look how Abram

  859. responds.

  860. He responds

  861. definitively

  862. and clearly

  863. I will not

  864. take anything

  865. from you

  866. king of Sodom.

  867. I have lifted

  868. my hand

  869. to the Lord

  870. God most high

  871. possessor of heaven

  872. and earth

  873. that I would not

  874. take a thread

  875. or a sandal strap

  876. or anything

  877. that is yours.

  878. Why?

  879. Lest you should say

  880. I have made

  881. Abram

  882. rich.

  883. You see it?

  884. Why does Abram

  885. respond like this?

  886. Abram's response

  887. teaches us

  888. an incredibly

  889. important lesson.

  890. I want you to

  891. listen to me here.

  892. Here it is.

  893. God alone

  894. must get

  895. the glory

  896. for Abram's

  897. blessing.

  898. God alone

  899. must get

  900. all glory

  901. for Abram's

  902. victory in war.

  903. In the years

  904. to come

  905. when Abram's

  906. offspring are

  907. multiplied

  908. and years to

  909. come when

  910. God gives

  911. him the land

  912. and years to

  913. come when

  914. God has

  915. blessed him

  916. greatly

  917. the king

  918. of Sodom

  919. won't be able

  920. to take

  921. any of the

  922. credit for it.

  923. Sodom will

  924. not get

  925. any glory

  926. for Abram's

  927. blessing.

  928. That glory

  929. belongs

  930. rightfully

  931. to God

  932. and God

  933. alone.

  934. Abram

  935. trusts by

  936. faith that

  937. God will

  938. bless him

  939. in God's

  940. time,

  941. in God's

  942. way,

  943. and so no

  944. one else

  945. will get

  946. the credit

  947. but God

  948. alone.

  949. church,

  950. do you

  951. seek the

  952. blessing of

  953. the Lord

  954. like Abram

  955. by faith

  956. in his

  957. promises

  958. or

  959. are you

  960. ever tempted

  961. to chase

  962. blessing in

  963. ways that

  964. might rob

  965. God of

  966. his glory?

  967. I know a

  968. pastor friend

  969. who served

  970. as an

  971. associate

  972. pastor in

  973. a church

  974. where there

  975. was just

  976. some unrest

  977. amongst the

  978. members.

  979. There's a

  980. contingency of

  981. people that

  982. didn't really

  983. approve of

  984. the lead

  985. pastor and

  986. the associate

  987. got a phone

  988. call one day

  989. from a member

  990. pitching this

  991. idea that

  992. they ought to

  993. do two

  994. separate services.

  995. This is a

  996. great idea.

  997. The lead

  998. pastor can

  999. continue on

  1000. and do his

  1001. thing in one

  1002. service but the

  1003. associate,

  1004. well you can

  1005. go lead the

  1006. other and

  1007. oh by the

  1008. way he would

  1009. be well

  1010. compensated.

  1011. Just think

  1012. about that.

  1013. It was a

  1014. not so

  1015. subtle attempt

  1016. to divide

  1017. the church

  1018. and undermine

  1019. the pastor

  1020. but the

  1021. temptation

  1022. underneath it

  1023. is well hey

  1024. here's an

  1025. opportunity to

  1026. lead and

  1027. to preach

  1028. and here's an

  1029. opportunity to

  1030. gain some

  1031. extra income

  1032. a pay raise

  1033. hey take

  1034. these blessings.

  1035. We face

  1036. temptations like

  1037. this all the

  1038. time don't

  1039. we?

  1040. Opportunities

  1041. to chase

  1042. blessing

  1043. chase

  1044. pleasure

  1045. chase

  1046. happiness

  1047. chase

  1048. money

  1049. but we

  1050. have to

  1051. ask at

  1052. what

  1053. cost?

  1054. You want

  1055. a promotion

  1056. and you

  1057. could get

  1058. it by

  1059. throwing your

  1060. co-worker

  1061. under the

  1062. bus

  1063. and you

  1064. want a

  1065. little pay

  1066. raise

  1067. and you

  1068. could get

  1069. it by

  1070. letting your

  1071. integrity

  1072. slip

  1073. you want

  1074. the blessing

  1075. of money

  1076. and you

  1077. could get

  1078. it

  1079. just by

  1080. a little

  1081. white lie

  1082. here and

  1083. there at

  1084. work

  1085. you

  1086. want the

  1087. blessing

  1088. of

  1089. sex

  1090. and you

  1091. could get

  1092. it by

  1093. hopping

  1094. on an

  1095. app

  1096. looking

  1097. for a

  1098. hookup

  1099. or

  1100. find

  1101. some

  1102. pornography

  1103. on the

  1104. internet

  1105. may we

  1106. be

  1107. faithful

  1108. like

  1109. Abram

  1110. to say

  1111. I will

  1112. not

  1113. chase

  1114. blessing

  1115. in

  1116. any

  1117. way

  1118. that

  1119. will

  1120. rob

  1121. God

  1122. of the

  1123. glory

  1124. that

  1125. he

  1126. alone

  1127. is

  1128. due

  1129. church

  1130. we

  1131. have to

  1132. by

  1133. God's

  1134. grace

  1135. reframe

  1136. our

  1137. view

  1138. of

  1139. the

  1140. world

  1141. so

  1142. that

  1143. we

  1144. no

  1145. longer

  1146. have

  1147. us

  1148. in

  1149. the

  1150. center

  1151. and

  1152. this

  1153. obsession

  1154. that

  1155. the

  1156. world

  1157. has

  1158. with

  1159. blessing

  1160. blessing

  1161. blessing

  1162. blessing

  1163. at all

  1164. costs

  1165. blessing

  1166. that I

  1167. deserve

  1168. blessing

  1169. that I

  1170. worked

  1171. hard

  1172. for

  1173. blessing

  1174. that I

  1175. want

  1176. blessing

  1177. that I

  1178. need

  1179. and

  1180. instead

  1181. put

  1182. God

  1183. and

  1184. his

  1185. glory

  1186. at the

  1187. center

  1188. where

  1189. he

  1190. rightly

  1191. belongs

  1192. God's

  1193. glory

  1194. not

  1195. your

  1196. blessing

  1197. is

  1198. ultimate

  1199. in

  1200. every

  1201. decision

  1202. in

  1203. every

  1204. situation

  1205. in

  1206. every

  1207. opportunity

  1208. in

  1209. every

  1210. moment

  1211. the

  1212. driving

  1213. motivator

  1214. of

  1215. all

  1216. things

  1217. shouldn't

  1218. be

  1219. how

  1220. can

  1221. I

  1222. get

  1223. what

  1224. I

  1225. want

  1226. but

  1227. rather

  1228. how

  1229. can

  1230. God's

  1231. glory

  1232. be

  1233. magnified

  1234. and

  1235. from

  1236. time

  1237. to

  1238. time

  1239. with

  1240. great

  1241. discernment

  1242. and

  1243. wisdom

  1244. church

  1245. that

  1246. might

  1247. mean

  1248. rejecting

  1249. an offer

  1250. that seems

  1251. good

  1252. for the

  1253. sole

  1254. reason

  1255. that it

  1256. might

  1257. rob

  1258. God

  1259. of the

  1260. glory

  1261. that

  1262. he's

  1263. due

  1264. takes

  1265. great

  1266. faith

  1267. to

  1268. trust

  1269. God

  1270. to

  1271. bless

  1272. in

  1273. his

  1274. time

  1275. in

  1276. his

  1277. way

  1278. but

  1279. that's

  1280. exactly

  1281. what

  1282. he's

  1283. promised

  1284. us

  1285. in

  1286. Christ

  1287. do

  1288. you

  1564. God

  1565. has

  1567. us

  1568. great

  1570. in

  1571. Christ

  1593. glory

  1594. of

  1595. God

  1596. your

  1597. blessing

  1598. is

  1599. not

  1600. about

  1601. you

  1602. ultimately

  1603. God

  1604. blesses

  1605. you

  1606. to

  1608. praise

  1609. of

  1610. his

  1611. glorious

  1612. grace

  1613. so

  1614. we

  1615. ought

  1616. to

  1617. chase

  1618. blessing

  1619. in

  1620. a

  1621. way

  1622. that

  1623. magnifies

  1624. the

  1625. glory

  1626. of

  1627. his

  1628. grace

  1629. not

  1630. in

  1631. a

  1632. way

  1633. that

  1634. has

  1635. us

  1636. at

  1637. the

  1638. center

  1639. all

  1640. of

  1641. us

  1642. in

  1643. many

  1646. tempted

  1647. to

  1648. rob

  1649. God

  1650. of

  1651. glory

  1652. he's

  1653. due

  1654. here

  1655. we

  1656. see

  1657. in

  1658. this

  1659. moment

  1660. Abram

  1661. he

  1662. succeeds

  1663. he

  1664. passes

  1665. the

  1666. test

  1667. but

  1668. unfortunately

  1669. where

  1670. Abram

  1671. here

  1672. succeeds

  1673. in the

  1674. temptation

  1675. unfortunately

  1676. church

  1677. if we're

  1678. honest

  1679. we would

  1680. admit

  1681. that we

  1682. all

  1683. often

  1684. fail

  1685. we

  1686. fail

  1687. to

  1688. forgive

  1689. as

  1690. God

  1691. has

  1692. forgiven

  1693. us

  1694. in

  1695. Christ

  1696. we

  1702. against

  1703. the

  1704. forces

  1705. of

  1706. sin

  1708. evil

  1709. we

  1710. fail

  1711. to

  1716. we

  1722. for

  1723. the

  1724. kingdom

  1725. of

  1726. God

  1727. we

  1728. fail

  1729. to

  1731. God's

  1733. in

  1734. God's

  1738. in

  1739. Christ

  1740. alone

  1741. which

  1742. is

  1743. why

  1744. I

  1745. am

  1746. so

  1747. thankful

  1748. that

  1749. we

  1750. have

  1751. such

  1752. a

  1755. priest

  1756. who

  1757. covers

  1758. all

  1759. my

  1760. sin

  1761. here

  1762. again

  1763. Abram

  1764. points

  1765. us

  1766. forwards

  1767. to

  1768. Jesus

  1769. who

  1774. after

  1775. this

  1776. great

  1777. moment

  1778. of

  1779. victory

  1780. this

  1781. high

  1782. point

  1783. in

  1784. the

  1785. beginning

  1786. of

  1787. the

  1788. public

  1789. ministry

  1790. of

  1791. Christ

  1792. immediately

  1793. afterwards

  1794. what

  1795. happens

  1796. immediately

  1797. afterwards

  1798. he is

  1799. driven

  1800. out

  1801. in

  1802. the

  1803. wilderness

  1804. to

  1805. be

  1806. tempted

  1807. by

  1808. Satan

  1809. and

  1810. do

  1811. you

  1812. see

  1813. a

  1814. similarity

  1815. do

  1816. you

  1817. remember

  1818. Satan's

  1819. temptation

  1820. I

  1821. will

  1822. give

  1823. you

  1824. all

  1825. of

  1826. this

  1827. if

  1828. you

  1829. would

  1830. only

  1831. bow

  1832. down

  1833. and

  1834. worship

  1835. me

  1836. give

  1837. me

  1838. the

  1839. glory

  1840. Jesus

  1841. and

  1842. I

  1843. will

  1844. give

  1845. you

  1846. the

  1847. blessing

  1848. let

  1849. me

  1850. put

  1851. my

  1852. stamp

  1853. on

  1854. your

  1856. let

  1857. me

  1858. put

  1859. my

  1860. stamp

  1861. on

  1862. your

  1863. blessing

  1864. give

  1865. me

  1866. the

  1867. credit

  1868. honor

  1869. me

  1870. and

  1871. what

  1872. does

  1873. Christ

  1874. do

  1875. praise

  1876. God

  1877. like

  1886. he

  1887. refuses

  1888. to

  1889. receive

  1890. even

  1891. the

  1892. slightest

  1893. blessing

  1894. from

  1895. the

  1896. enemy

  1897. he

  1898. entrusts

  1899. himself

  1900. to

  1901. the

  1902. Lord

  1903. and

  1904. his

  1905. promise

  1906. of

  1908. not

  1909. just

  1910. for

  1911. a

  1912. moment

  1913. but

  1914. for

  1915. all

  1916. of

  1919. a

  1920. life

  1921. of

  1922. perfect

  1923. faith

  1932. when

  1933. we

  2171. gift

  2172. of

  2173. faith

  2174. this

  2175. morning

  2176. now

  2178. Lord

  2179. we

  2180. pray

  2181. that

  2182. as

  2183. we

  2184. look
