  1. Any children ages three and under that would like to take advantage of the nursery, you may do so at this time.

  2. Looks like they've already made their exit, so they're welcome to stay in here or take advantage of the nursery, either one at your discretion.

  3. But if you would, let's open up our Bibles this morning to Genesis chapter 18, and we're picking up halfway through in the second half of chapter 18

    Genesis 18 chapter mention

  4. this morning in verse 16, going through the end of the chapter, verse 33. So Genesis chapter 18,

    Genesis 18:16–33

  5. verses 16 through 33, and when you found that in your Bibles, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word this morning.

  6. Then the men set out from there, and they looked down towards Sodom, and Abraham went with them to set them on their way.

  7. The Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great

  8. and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him. For I have chosen him,

  9. that he may command his children and his household after him, to keep the way of the Lord,

  10. by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.

  11. Then the Lord said, Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great,

  12. and their sin is very grave,

  13. I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me,

  14. and if not, I will know. So the men turned from there and went towards Sodom,

  15. but Abraham still stood before the Lord. Then Abraham drew near and said, Will you indeed sweep

  16. away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then

  17. sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing.

  18. To put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked. Far be that

  19. from you. Shall not the judge of all the earth do what is just? And the Lord said, If I find at Sodom

  20. fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake. Abraham answered and said,

  21. Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. Suppose five of the fifty

  22. righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for the lack of five? And he said, I will not destroy it

  23. if I find forty-five there. Again he spoke to him and said, Suppose forty are found there. He answered, For

  24. the sake of forty, I will not do it. And he said, Oh, let not the Lord be angry and I will speak. Suppose thirty

  25. are found there. He answered, I will not do it.

  26. He said, Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there. He answered, For

  27. the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it. And then he said, Oh, let not the Lord be angry and I will speak

  28. again but this once. Suppose ten are found there. He answered, For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.

  29. And the Lord went his way when he had finished speaking to Abraham. And Abraham returned to his

  30. place. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever. Father God, we

  31. are grateful, Lord, that you are a God who hears our prayers. And that you are a God that sees all and

  32. that knows all, that you are a just and a holy God. And so we pray this morning, Lord, we pray

  33. God, would you bless the preaching of the word this morning. Would you bring non-believers to faith and

  34. would you bring believers to maturity this morning? We pray in Jesus' name. Amen. You may be seated.

  35. It has been an interesting few weeks, to say the least. If you pay attention to the news and follow

  36. the headlines that are put before us, you'll notice often it's very little good news, is it?

  37. And this week, the headlines read, Shooter opens fire at ICE facility kills one detainee.

  38. A week or so ago, the headlines were about a shooting at a school in Evergreen, Colorado,

  39. and of course, Charlie Kirk at the campus of Utah Valley University. Before that, it was

  40. Irina Zarutska, a refugee, stabbed on a train in Charlotte late August. It's really never much

  41. good news that we get. And of course, it's not just here in our country. If you zoom out just a

  42. little bit beyond our borders, you zoom out. You may not have even heard about this. I'm not even sure

  43. if it made the major headlines or not. But just a few weeks ago, over 100 Christians were killed in the

  44. Democratic Republic of Congo. They were gathered together worshiping at a funeral for one of their members

  45. when a militant group from the Islamic State came in and began to open fire and wipe them all out.

  46. And just before that, towards the end of July, about 200 Christians were murdered in Yelwada,

  47. Nigeria. Very similar type of story. And this sort of wickedness is profound and it is widespread.

  48. And you hear stories like this and oftentimes as Christians, we might wonder, well, how in the world

  49. are we supposed to respond to the wickedness all around us? And what can we do as Christians all

  50. the way here in all in all South Carolina for our brothers and sisters throughout the world who are

  51. experiencing great and terrible wickedness? Well, there are many ways that we can respond, but I want to

  52. show us one from our passage this morning. Our passage gives us one very simple way, and it's this.

  53. God's people are called to pray. God's people are called to devote themselves to prayer.

  54. In our passage this morning, Abraham shows us what it looks like for God's people to pray

  55. in light of the wickedness all around us. And so what I'd like to do this morning as we look at our

  56. passages. First, I want to just briefly try and explain what's going on here. We'll just kind of

  57. review what's happening here in the passage. And then I want us to see five takeaways for our prayers.

  58. Five takeaways, five ways to pray in light of the wickedness all around us. So first, let's take a

  59. look at the passage here. And look there with me starting in verse 16. We're starting halfway through

  60. the chapter this morning. Again, we saw last week, if you remember, these three men come and appear

  61. before Abraham and Sarah in the first half of chapter 18. And if you remember, there's no doubt

  62. that this is the Lord. This is another theophany. The Lord appears here in human form to Abraham.

  63. And there are two angels there with him. They come and they promise him yet again,

  64. this reminder of the promise of the coming birth of Isaac. That was last week. The verse 16 picks up

  65. from here. And it tells us that the men set out from there. They're leaving and they they look down

  66. towards Sodom. The Hebron, where they are, is up on a hill. Sodom is down by the Dead Sea. And so up in

  67. Hebron, they have a pretty good vantage point where they can literally look down and see the city.

  68. And as they make their way out, we're told Abram, he goes with them to send them on their way. And the

  69. Lord, he begins to speak. He says, shall I hide from Abraham what I'm about to do? Why? Well, because

  70. Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed

  71. in him. I've chosen him that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way

  72. of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has

  73. promised him. We see right away a reminder of this special place that the Lord has has brought Abraham

  74. into. All right. Why does the Lord want to fill Abraham in on his plans? Well, it's the same reason

  75. why the Lord has appeared again and again and again and again to Abraham over these chapters, speaking with

  76. him and making promises to him. Abraham, by God's grace, has been brought into this special

  77. covenantal relationship with the Lord. And we see here Abraham enjoys this privileged relationship

  78. with God. That's one thing we ought to notice. We also notice again, God is making here a distinction,

  79. isn't he? God is marking off Abraham and his offspring from the wicked, in particular from the inhabitants

  80. of Sodom. There's a distinction between the righteous and the wicked. Abraham and his children are to keep

  81. the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and doing justice so that the Lord may bring to Abraham all

  82. these promises. They are to be distinct. And the Lord, as we'll soon see, he certainly will do righteousness

  83. and he will do justice and his people must also do the same. We see here God makes a distinction between

  84. the righteous and the wicked. And ultimately, as we'll look ahead to next week, we see a distinction in

  85. their end destination. The righteous are delivered by the grace of God, but the wicked are ultimately

  86. destined for destruction. Well, the lesson for God's people here is do not be like Sodom. Be distinct.

  87. In one way, a very clear way that we ought to respond to the wickedness around us, Christian, is to make

  88. certain that we're not a part of it. We, as God's people, are called to stand out. We ought to stand

  89. out and be distinct in the midst of great wickedness all around us. God's people are called to be light.

  90. And so we see the Lord plans to go down and see what's going on there in Sodom. And verse 20 picks up

  91. and explains the reason why. He says it's because this outcry has come against Sodom and Gomorrah.

  92. And this outcry is very great and the sin is very grave. So I'm going to go down and I'm going to see

  93. whether or not this outcry is true. And if it is, or if it's not, I will know. This is courtroom language

  94. here. The outcry has come to the Lord. An accusation has been made. The charges have been filed.

  95. Now this is the cry of somebody who has been oppressed and who needs justice. This outcry has come to the Lord,

  96. the judge, and so the men go down and head towards Sodom. But look what happens here in verse 22.

  97. It says Abraham is still standing before the Lord. He doesn't just simply send them off and say

  98. goodbye, does he? He stands there and he does something very bold here. He begins to bargain

  99. with God. And so I want you to get this courtroom image in your mind, okay? Imagine a courtroom scene

  100. with me here. God the judge sits with gavel in hand. He is ready to render the verdict.

  101. He is ready to give a sentence of complete destruction on the entire city of Sodom. He's heard

  102. the accusation. He's ready to render judgment. The people of Sodom sit there in their seat. They are

  103. awaiting their sentence. But before that gavel can come down, Abraham stands up and he presents his case

  104. to the judge. Abraham is serving as their defense attorney. But notice here who it is that he represents.

  105. He doesn't represent all of Sodom without qualification, without distinction, does he? Who is he representing

  106. here? He stands up to defend the righteous. His argument to the judge is that it would not be just for God,

  107. the judge, to destroy the righteous with the wicked. You see that? Don't lump them all up together and

  108. punish them all the same way. That would not be just. Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with

  109. the wicked? He says, verse 23, surely not. And he begins to bargain him down. And suppose there are

  110. 50 there. Will you indeed sweep away the place for 50 and not spare the 50 righteous who are in it?

  111. Far be that from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the

  112. righteous fair as the wicked, far be that from you shall not the judge of all the earth do what is just. And we see

  113. the Lord agrees. If I find that Sodom, even 50 righteous, he says, I will spare the whole place for their sake.

  114. So Abraham keeps bargaining him down. He's like negotiating the price of a used car, isn't he? He's just whittling

  115. him down little by little by little by little from 50 to 45, from 45 to 40, from 40 to

  116. 30, all the way down to 10. And God, the judge says, if I even find 10 there, Abraham, I promise you,

  117. I will spare the whole city for their sake. Abraham stands here and intercedes for the righteous.

  118. That's his primary aim. He's defending the righteous. He's praying for the righteous there in the city.

  119. But do you notice how the wicked are blessed as well? His primary aim is to save the righteous.

  120. But did you notice in preserving the righteous there in that city? Guess what? The whole place is spared

  121. for their sake. The wicked also are blessed. You know, the same is true today. We know, Christian, that God has appointed

  122. a day soon to come when God will judge the wickedness of all the world. But God delays his wrath

  123. for the sake of the salvation of his people. And in this moment of God's patience, guess what?

  124. Well, the wicked enjoy all sorts of blessings, don't they? The wicked enjoy all sorts of common grace gifts

  125. from the Lord. They enjoy life and joy and children and family and riches and prosperity. But you know,

  126. the most obvious blessing that the wicked enjoy in this moment of God's patience, do you know what it is?

  127. It is the opportunity to repent and to come to the Lord so that they may no longer be counted in this

  128. category of wicked, but may be included amongst the righteous. God will one day judge America and Nigeria and the

  129. Democratic Republic of the Congo, but not before every last one of his people are redeemed. Until then, the wicked enjoy

  130. many, many, many, many mercies that are called to repentance.

  131. Here Abraham, he stands before the Lord and he intercedes on behalf of the people of God. He is praying

  132. as mediator between God and man. Here he is standing in the gap and he's looking out in light of the

  133. wickedness all around him and Abraham is interceding on behalf of the people of God. And now church and the

  134. rest of our time together, what I want us to see is that we too are called to pray like this.

  135. Five ways.

  136. Because I'm sure you've noticed that Abraham is not the only one to live in a wicked world. Amen?

  137. I mean, the wickedness that Abraham saw in Sodom, the wickedness that Abraham endured in a fallen world

  138. thousands of years ago here in the book of Genesis, is it any different today?

  139. We too live in a world that is cursed by sin. The curse of sin is just as real in our day now,

  140. 2025 as it was all the way back here in Genesis. So how should we pray? Five takeaways here. First, church,

  141. we must pray in light of who God is. Pray in light of who God is. This is the foundation of our prayers.

  142. God's character is the basis of our prayers. If Abraham thought for a second that the judge of all

  143. the earth was corrupt, he wouldn't waste his time bringing his case before the Lord, would he? But because

  144. he knows God's holy character, he pleads with him, he begs him, he brings his case before him. Church,

  145. we pray because God is holy. Our God is perfectly righteous in all his ways. Our God is totally pure. God

  146. delights in righteousness and God abhors wickedness. If we have any sort of anger in our hearts towards

  147. towards the wickedness around us, if we look out and say, that's not right. If it makes you angry that

  148. our brothers and sisters are put to death throughout the world, just think of the holy, righteous anger of

  149. the Lord. If we are offended by sin, we can be certain that God who is holy, holy, holy does not take sin

  150. lightly. He does not have a live and let live attitude towards sin. Not only this, we pray, because our God is

  151. just. He is totally just in all his ways. This holy God will not let wickedness have the last word.

  152. evil will not triumph. Our God will execute justice. Do you believe this?

  153. Sometimes it's hard to believe this because we look around and it looks like evil is winning.

  154. And sometimes it looks like we can't find justice. And sometimes church, I'll be honest with you,

  155. we will not get justice on this side of glory.

  156. But we know

  157. in the end, our God will bring

  158. justice. If not immediately in this life, then ultimately, certainly

  159. at the return of Christ. So we pray

  160. that our God is holy. Our God

  161. is just. We also pray because our God is omniscient.

  162. That's a big word.

  163. God. It simply means that our God knows

  164. everything.

  165. We see that here in verse 21.

  166. Don't we? He's heard this outcry.

  167. He's going to see and

  168. he will know.

  169. Whatever is happening there in Sodom,

  170. it is not a secret

  171. to the Lord.

  172. No sin, no

  173. wickedness catches the Lord

  174. by surprise. No

  175. rebellion is a new

  176. discovery for him. He sees

  177. all. He knows

  178. all. God knows

  179. about all the evil in the world.

  180. Sometimes in human courts, they get it wrong, don't they?

  181. Sometimes evidence

  182. is withheld.

  183. Sometimes they don't have all the information

  184. they need to render a proper

  185. verdict. Sometimes they just

  186. get it wrong. Sometimes people know,

  187. they think they know what's going on,

  188. but they're wrong. They really don't have a clue.

  189. They don't have the knowledge to execute

  190. justice.

  191. Not

  192. so

  193. with God.

  194. God knows.

  195. We cry out to God

  196. for justice because

  197. He knows.

  198. Some people take that as reason

  199. not to pray.

  200. Right?

  201. If God already knows,

  202. if He already sees what's going on,

  203. why in the world would I pray to Him about it?

  204. And may I just say

  205. that that's not how Jesus sees it?

  206. You know, the most

  207. famous prayer in the Bible,

  208. the Lord's Prayer,

  209. we just had it read

  210. earlier this morning.

  211. Right before the Lord's Prayer,

  212. what does He say?

  213. Your Father in Heaven

  214. knows what you need

  215. before you ask Him.

  216. Pray then like this,

  217. He says.

  218. His omniscience

  219. is a reason to pray

  220. with confidence

  221. because God sees.

  222. God knows.

  223. But praise God,

  224. we also pray

  225. because our God

  226. is merciful

  227. and gracious.

  228. God is willing

  229. to be patient.

  230. Far more willing

  231. than you and I are.

  232. He is willing

  233. to delay

  234. His wrath

  235. for the sake

  236. of the salvation

  237. of His people.

  238. So we pray

  239. because our God

  240. is not willing

  241. that any should perish

  242. but that all

  243. should reach repentance.

  244. So we see,

  245. first,

  246. Abraham,

  247. he speaks in light

  248. of God's character

  249. and so must we.

  250. We pray in light

  251. of who God is.

  252. Not only this,

  253. second,

  254. second,

  255. we pray in light

  256. of who we are.

  257. We must pray

  258. in light

  259. of who we are.

  260. are.

  261. And for one thing,

  262. we ought to recognize

  263. our unworthiness

  264. in prayer,

  265. church.

  266. Abraham knows

  267. exactly who he is.

  268. Look there

  269. to verse 27.

  270. As he's reasoning

  271. with the Lord,

  272. as he's bargaining

  273. with God,

  274. what does he say?

  275. Behold,

  276. I have undertaken

  277. to speak to the Lord,

  278. I who am

  279. but dust

  280. and ashes.

  281. I mean,

  282. it's like he just

  283. recognized,

  284. I am talking

  285. with almighty

  286. God here.

  287. What have I gotten

  288. myself into?

  289. This is the creator

  290. of the universe.

  291. This is the Lord

  292. of all the earth.

  293. This is the king

  294. of kings.

  295. I'm face to face

  296. with God almighty.

  297. Who am I

  298. to speak

  299. to do something

  300. like this?

  301. This is dust

  302. and ashes

  303. speaking to the Lord.

  304. He recognizes

  305. his unworthiness.

  306. Church,

  307. I wonder,

  308. do you pray

  309. like this?

  310. Do you recognize

  311. your unworthiness

  312. before the Lord

  313. in prayer?

  314. I mean,

  315. don't pray to the Lord

  316. like you're just

  317. texting your buddy.

  318. We ought to pray

  319. as the Puritans

  320. prayed.

  321. Have you ever read

  322. some Puritan prayers?

  323. I love,

  324. there's this little

  325. prayer book,

  326. it's called

  327. The Valley of Vision.

  328. It's a collection

  329. of Puritan prayers

  330. and in it

  331. there's this little

  332. prayer,

  333. it's called

  334. Self-Deprecation.

  335. Now if you want

  336. to be encouraged,

  337. go read

  338. Self-Deprecation.

  339. Let me read it to you.

  340. It's very encouraging.

  341. Oh Lord,

  342. my every sense,

  343. member,

  344. faculty,

  345. affection

  346. is a snare

  347. to me.

  348. I can scarce

  349. open my eyes

  350. but I envy

  351. those above me

  352. or despise

  353. those below.

  354. I covet

  355. honor

  356. and riches

  357. of the mighty

  358. and I'm proud

  359. and unmerciful

  360. to the rags

  361. of others.

  362. If I behold

  363. beauty,

  364. it's a bait

  365. to lust.

  366. If I see

  367. deformity,

  368. it stirs up

  369. loathing

  370. and disdain.

  371. How soon

  372. do slanders,

  373. vain jests

  374. and wanton

  375. speeches

  376. creep into my heart?

  377. Am I comely?

  378. It's fuel for pride.

  379. Am I deformed?

  380. What an occasion

  381. for repining.

  382. Am I gifted?

  383. I lust

  384. after applause.

  385. Am I unlearned?

  386. How do I despise

  387. what I have not?

  388. Am I in authority?

  389. How prone

  390. to abuse

  391. my trust,

  392. make my will

  393. my law,

  394. exclude others'

  395. enjoyments,

  396. serve my own

  397. interests

  398. and policy.

  399. Am I inferior?

  400. How much I grudge

  401. others' preeminence.

  402. Am I rich?

  403. How exalted

  404. I become.

  405. You see?

  406. You see the picture.

  407. Thou knowest

  408. that all these

  409. are snares

  410. by my corruptions

  411. and that my

  412. greatest snare

  413. is myself.

  414. I bewail

  415. that my apprehensions

  416. are dull,

  417. my thoughts mean,

  418. my affections stupid,

  419. my expressions low,

  420. my life unbeseeming.

  421. Yet what

  422. canst thou expect

  423. of dust

  424. but levity,

  425. of corruption

  426. but defilement?

  427. Keep me ever

  428. mindful of my

  429. natural state,

  430. but let me

  431. not forget

  432. my heavenly title

  433. or the grace

  434. that can deal

  435. with every sin.

  436. Do you pray

  437. like that?

  438. And maybe not

  439. quite like that

  440. but do you pray

  441. humbly

  442. recognizing

  443. your unworthiness

  444. and your

  445. weakness

  446. before the Lord?

  447. But did you catch

  448. the last line?

  449. He said,

  450. keep me ever

  451. mindful of my

  452. natural state

  453. but let me

  454. not forget

  455. my heavenly

  456. title

  457. or the grace

  458. that can deal

  459. with every

  460. sin.

  461. We see Abraham,

  462. he prays humbly,

  463. he recognizes

  464. his natural state

  465. that he is

  466. dust and ashes

  467. but he also

  468. prays boldly.

  469. Why?

  470. Because of an

  471. awareness

  472. of his heavenly

  473. title

  474. and the grace

  475. of God

  476. that is

  477. for him.

  478. church,

  479. we pray

  480. with boldness

  481. before the Lord,

  482. we come to him

  483. with confidence

  484. because of our

  485. heavenly title

  486. in Christ.

  487. God has brought

  488. Abraham into this

  489. covenant relationship

  490. with himself

  491. and church,

  492. in Christ

  493. we have

  494. this access.

  495. when we pray,

  496. yes,

  497. we pray in

  498. light of

  499. who we

  500. are

  501. and that

  502. includes

  503. who God

  504. has made

  505. us to be.

  506. Yes,

  507. we are unworthy

  508. by our own

  509. right but God

  510. by his grace

  511. has given us

  512. this access

  513. in Christ.

  514. We are his

  515. children

  516. in Christ.

  517. We are

  518. declared

  519. righteous

  520. by faith

  521. in Christ.

  522. we are

  523. washed

  524. clean

  525. of every

  526. sin.

  527. We are

  528. adopted

  529. into his

  530. family.

  531. We are

  532. given

  533. full

  534. access

  535. to God

  536. the Father

  537. in Christ.

  538. Christ Jesus

  539. died and rose

  540. to buy this

  541. access for us.

  542. But we can

  543. pray with boldness

  544. because of who

  545. we are

  546. in Christ.

  547. In Christ

  548. Jesus.

  549. Church,

  550. we are

  551. his chosen

  552. people.

  553. We are

  554. the children

  555. of Abraham.

  556. we are

  557. his privileged

  558. his chosen

  559. his beloved

  560. children

  561. in Christ.

  562. This preferred

  563. privileged place

  564. is ours

  565. in Christ.

  566. Do you realize

  567. what an

  568. extraordinary

  569. privilege that

  570. is?

  571. Anytime

  572. you want

  573. you can

  574. bow your

  575. head and

  576. speak to

  577. God Almighty

  578. and be

  579. welcomed

  580. as his

  581. own child.

  582. God.

  583. So we

  584. pray in

  585. light of

  586. who God

  587. is.

  588. We pray

  589. in light

  590. of who

  591. we are

  592. third.

  593. We pray

  594. in light

  595. of God's

  596. purposes.

  597. Look at

  598. what Abraham

  599. asks God

  600. to do

  601. here.

  602. And notice

  603. again his

  604. concern is

  605. primarily for

  606. the salvation

  607. of the

  608. righteous.

  609. That's his

  610. primary argument

  611. here.

  612. Don't sweep

  613. the righteous

  614. away with

  615. the wicked.

  616. Right?

  617. Abraham does

  618. not argue

  619. the fact

  620. that the

  621. wicked have

  622. earned God's

  623. judgment.

  624. He doesn't

  625. even bring

  626. that up.

  627. He doesn't

  628. say a word

  629. about it.

  630. He knows

  631. that they

  632. deserve

  633. judgment.

  634. But he

  635. also knows

  636. that God

  637. will certainly

  638. save his

  639. people.

  640. So he

  641. speaks with

  642. this big

  643. picture in

  644. mind.

  645. Church,

  646. and so

  647. must we.

  648. When we

  649. pray,

  650. we need

  651. to pray

  652. in light

  653. of God's

  654. heart,

  655. God's

  656. plan,

  657. God's

  658. purposes.

  659. And we

  660. know,

  661. don't we,

  662. with even

  663. greater clarity

  664. than Abraham,

  665. we know

  666. that God

  667. has appointed

  668. a day

  669. when Christ

  670. will return

  671. and all

  672. his people,

  673. the righteous,

  674. those who

  675. have put

  676. their faith

  677. in Christ,

  678. those who

  679. have been

  680. made righteous

  681. by faith

  682. in him,

  683. all of his

  684. people will

  685. be redeemed.

  686. and ultimately

  687. we know

  688. all of

  689. the wicked,

  690. those outside

  691. of Christ,

  692. will be

  693. judged.

  694. As we

  695. pray in

  696. light of the

  697. wickedness all

  698. around us,

  699. as we see

  700. wickedness in

  701. our town,

  702. in our nation,

  703. in our

  704. community,

  705. in our life,

  706. it is good

  707. and right for

  708. us to pray

  709. that that

  710. ultimate,

  711. final judgment

  712. would break

  713. into the

  714. present.

  715. And so

  716. we pray,

  717. God,

  718. judge the

  719. wicked.

  720. Of course,

  721. when we pray

  722. for the wicked,

  723. our first

  724. inclination

  725. ought to be

  726. to pray

  727. that the

  728. Lord God

  729. would be

  730. gracious to

  731. them as

  732. he has been

  733. gracious to

  734. us.

  735. Amen?

  736. That in

  737. this moment

  738. of delay,

  739. this moment

  740. of God's

  741. patience,

  742. our first

  743. prayer ought

  744. to be,

  745. God,

  746. would you

  747. redeem them?

  748. Would you

  749. save them?

  750. Would you

  751. give them

  752. the gift of

  753. faith?

  754. Would you

  755. bring them

  756. to repentance?

  757. Would you

  758. bring them

  759. out of the

  760. category of

  761. the wicked

  762. and into

  763. the category

  764. of the

  765. righteous?

  766. But if

  767. not,

  768. it is

  769. good and

  770. right to

  771. pray for

  772. justice.

  773. Now,

  774. the Psalms

  775. are not shy

  776. about this.

  777. you read

  778. through the

  779. Psalms and

  780. you will

  781. find David

  782. praying that

  783. God would

  784. bring justice

  785. here and

  786. now,

  787. this ultimate

  788. picture of

  789. justice,

  790. that it

  791. would break

  792. into the

  793. present moment.

  794. Psalm 58,

  795. he says

  796. things like,

  797. break the

  798. teeth in

  799. their mouths.

  800. Psalm 58.

  801. We hear that,

  802. we say,

  803. that doesn't

  804. sound very

  805. nice.

  806. Let them

  807. vanish like

  808. water that

  809. runs away.

  810. That sounds

  811. mean,

  812. doesn't it?

  813. Let them

  814. be like the

  815. snail that

  816. dissolves into

  817. slime.

  818. We don't

  819. talk like

  820. that,

  821. do we?

  822. Could you

  823. imagine,

  824. Treg comes

  825. up for the

  826. pastoral

  827. prayer and

  828. he starts

  829. praying,

  830. let them

  831. be like

  832. the snail.

  833. Pour some

  834. salt on

  835. them,

  836. God.

  837. God.

  838. We live

  839. in a

  840. world that

  841. doesn't

  842. think anybody

  843. deserves

  844. judgment.

  845. Church,

  846. we know

  847. better,

  848. don't we?

  849. We know

  850. the wicked

  851. deserve

  852. judgment.

  853. And we

  854. know that

  855. we,

  856. by our

  857. natural state,

  858. belong to

  859. the category

  860. of the

  861. wicked,

  862. that we

  863. are rightfully

  864. deserving of

  865. God's

  866. judgment.

  867. But by

  868. his grace,

  869. Christ paid

  870. the price

  871. for our

  872. sin.

  873. The only

  874. reason that

  875. we are not

  876. in the

  877. category of

  878. the wicked,

  879. bound for

  880. hell,

  881. is that

  882. Christ endured

  883. the wrath of

  884. God for

  885. us.

  886. That's the

  887. only reason.

  888. We don't

  889. pray from a

  890. moral high

  891. ground saying

  892. we are better

  893. than you.

  894. We pray,

  895. God,

  896. would you

  897. save them?

  898. And if

  899. not,

  900. Lord,

  901. judge the

  902. wickedness of

  903. the world.

  904. God,

  905. judge the

  906. wicked and

  907. God,

  908. save your

  909. people.

  910. God,

  911. would you

  912. redeem your

  913. elect?

  914. Would you

  915. rescue them

  916. from the

  917. schemes of

  918. the evil

  919. one?

  920. God,

  921. would you

  922. protect them?

  923. Would you

  924. help them?

  925. Would you

  926. bless them?

  927. Would you

  928. turn the

  929. plans of

  930. the wicked

  931. on their

  932. own heads?

  933. You think

  934. again of the

  935. persecuted

  936. church in

  937. the Congo

  938. and places

  939. of China

  940. and Sudan.

  941. It is right

  942. to pray,

  943. Lord,

  944. would you

  945. shield,

  946. be a

  947. shield for

  948. your people?

  949. Would you

  950. protect them

  951. as they

  952. gather in

  953. a dangerous

  954. place?

  955. Would you

  956. preserve their

  957. lives,

  958. protect their

  959. families,

  960. protect the

  961. believers there?

  962. And Lord,

  963. would you

  964. just put an

  965. end?

  966. Would you

  967. capture the

  968. murderers?

  969. Would you

  970. bring justice

  971. to them?

  972. Would you

  973. put a stop

  974. to their

  975. evil?

  976. Would you

  977. draw them

  978. to faith

  979. in Christ

  980. and be

  981. merciful to

  982. them?

  983. But Lord,

  984. would you

  985. bring

  986. justice?

  987. Church,

  988. we are

  989. called like

  990. Abraham to

  991. intercede on

  992. behalf of

  993. God's people.

  994. We're called

  995. to pray for

  996. the church

  997. to be built

  998. amongst all

  999. nations.

  1000. This is the

  1001. big picture

  1002. plan of

  1003. God.

  1004. We have

  1005. the responsibility

  1006. and the

  1007. blessing of

  1008. interceding for

  1009. our brothers

  1010. and sisters

  1011. before the

  1012. Lord.

  1013. Church,

  1014. are you

  1015. praying for

  1016. your brothers

  1017. and sisters

  1018. in Christ?

  1019. Start right

  1020. here.

  1021. I would

  1022. encourage you

  1023. to start

  1024. right here

  1025. in this

  1026. church family.

  1027. You look

  1028. around.

  1029. This isn't

  1030. a big

  1031. room.

  1032. You look

  1033. around here.

  1034. Start right

  1035. here.

  1036. You recognize

  1037. the schemes

  1038. of the

  1039. wicked would

  1040. love to

  1041. destroy the

  1042. righteous in

  1043. this room.

  1044. The enemy

  1045. would love

  1046. if the

  1047. righteous were

  1048. swept away

  1049. with the

  1050. wicked in

  1051. this room.

  1052. Would you

  1053. pray for one

  1054. another?

  1055. Would you

  1056. pray for

  1057. me?

  1058. Pray for

  1059. your pastor?

  1060. You see

  1061. another pastor

  1062. seems almost

  1063. weakly,

  1064. failing because

  1065. of some

  1066. disqualifying

  1067. sin.

  1068. Church,

  1069. I realize

  1070. I am

  1071. but dust

  1072. and ashes.

  1073. Would you

  1074. pray that

  1075. your pastor

  1076. would not

  1077. be swept

  1078. away with

  1079. the wicked?

  1080. Would you

  1081. take your

  1082. membership

  1083. directory and

  1084. pray this

  1085. for one

  1086. another?

  1087. Pray that

  1088. the Lord

  1089. would preserve

  1090. you by

  1091. his grace,

  1092. that he

  1093. would

  1094. finally

  1095. rescue

  1096. his

  1097. people

  1098. from the

  1099. wickedness

  1100. of this

  1101. world?

  1102. Would you

  1103. pray that

  1104. for each

  1105. other?

  1106. We are

  1107. called to

  1108. intercede

  1109. like Abraham

  1110. for others

  1111. around us.

  1112. And again,

  1113. church,

  1114. what a privilege

  1115. that is to

  1116. pray.

  1117. We stand

  1118. in the gap,

  1119. intercede

  1120. on behalf

  1121. of God's

  1122. people.

  1123. But notice

  1124. also,

  1125. fourth,

  1126. notice how

  1127. specific

  1128. Abraham

  1129. is here.

  1130. You notice

  1131. that?

  1132. How specific

  1133. he is with

  1134. his prayers?

  1135. This is the

  1136. fourth way

  1137. we are

  1138. called to

  1139. pray.

  1140. We are

  1141. called to

  1142. pray boldly

  1143. and specifically

  1144. before the

  1145. Lord.

  1146. Just look

  1147. there with

  1148. me at how

  1149. specific he

  1150. is.

  1151. He doesn't

  1152. say,

  1153. God,

  1154. spare the

  1155. righteous in

  1156. Sodom.

  1157. Although that

  1158. would have

  1159. been perfectly

  1160. fine.

  1161. What does

  1162. he say?

  1163. God,

  1164. if there

  1165. are 50

  1166. there,

  1167. would you

  1168. spare them?

  1169. God,

  1170. let me,

  1171. five more.

  1172. If there

  1173. are 45

  1174. there,

  1175. God,

  1176. would you

  1177. spare them?

  1178. All the

  1179. way down

  1180. to 10.

  1181. God,

  1182. if there

  1183. are 10

  1184. there,

  1185. would you

  1186. spare them?

  1187. He is

  1188. being direct

  1189. and specific

  1190. with what

  1191. he wants

  1192. the Lord

  1193. to do.

  1194. How specific

  1195. are your

  1196. prayers?

  1197. A pastor

  1198. named

  1199. Justin

  1200. Dillehay,

  1201. he wrote

  1202. an article

  1203. reflecting on

  1204. this passage

  1205. and he

  1206. brought up

  1207. George

  1208. Mueller.

  1209. Do you

  1210. know the

  1211. story of

  1212. George

  1213. Mueller?

  1214. George

  1215. Mueller is

  1216. famous for

  1217. running several

  1218. orphanages and

  1219. he said this,

  1220. he said,

  1221. instead of

  1222. vague requests

  1223. like,

  1224. Father,

  1225. please provide

  1226. for our

  1227. needs,

  1228. Mueller's

  1229. prayers tended

  1230. to sound

  1231. more like,

  1232. Father,

  1233. we need

  1234. 110 loaves

  1235. of bread

  1236. and 75

  1237. pairs of

  1238. shoes

  1239. by tomorrow

  1240. morning.

  1241. he shared

  1242. how one

  1243. time he

  1244. was sailing

  1245. to America

  1246. for a

  1247. preaching

  1248. crusade

  1249. and his

  1250. ship was

  1251. stuck in

  1252. a dense

  1253. fog threatening

  1254. to derail

  1255. his entire

  1256. preaching tour

  1257. and according

  1258. to the

  1259. captain,

  1260. Mueller knelt

  1261. down on his

  1262. knees and

  1263. prayed,

  1264. oh Lord,

  1265. if it is

  1266. consistent with

  1267. thy will,

  1268. please remove

  1269. this fog in

  1270. five minutes.

  1271. He could

  1272. have said,

  1273. God,

  1274. just get us

  1275. through this.

  1276. God,

  1277. remove the

  1278. fog,

  1279. please,

  1280. as soon as

  1281. possible,

  1282. but five

  1283. minutes,

  1284. he thought

  1285. five minutes

  1286. was perfectly

  1287. possible for

  1288. the Lord.

  1289. He figured

  1290. he'd be

  1291. specific.

  1292. And of

  1293. course,

  1294. that's exactly

  1295. what God

  1296. did.

  1297. Exactly as

  1298. Mueller

  1299. asked,

  1300. church,

  1301. as we

  1302. pray,

  1303. in light of

  1304. the wickedness

  1305. all around

  1306. us,

  1307. friend,

  1308. let me

  1309. encourage you

  1310. to pray

  1311. specifically.

  1312. God knows

  1313. exactly what

  1314. you need.

  1315. Ask him.

  1316. Ask him.

  1317. Ask him

  1318. specifically,

  1319. pointedly,

  1320. directly.

  1321. Put a

  1322. number on

  1323. it,

  1324. a time on

  1325. it.

  1326. Ask him

  1327. specifically

  1328. for what

  1329. you like

  1330. to see

  1331. him do.

  1332. So let's

  1333. get specific.

  1334. Church,

  1335. it is

  1336. good and

  1337. right to

  1338. pray for

  1339. an end

  1340. to

  1341. abortion.

  1342. It is

  1343. better to

  1344. pray,

  1345. God,

  1346. would you

  1347. bankrupt

  1348. Whole Woman's

  1349. Health

  1350. Abortion

  1351. Clinic in

  1352. Charleston

  1353. this year?

  1354. Would you

  1355. provide

  1356. counseling

  1357. and help

  1358. for the

  1359. mothers in

  1360. need this

  1361. year?

  1362. Would you

  1363. raise up

  1364. more Christian

  1365. families who

  1366. would be

  1367. willing to

  1368. foster and

  1369. adopt in

  1370. my community?

  1371. it is

  1372. good to

  1373. pray,

  1374. God,

  1375. would you

  1376. save my

  1377. family and

  1378. friends?

  1379. It is

  1380. better to

  1381. pray,

  1382. God,

  1383. would you

  1384. give me an

  1385. opportunity to

  1386. share the

  1387. gospel with

  1388. my brother

  1389. tomorrow?

  1390. And then

  1391. would you

  1392. give him

  1393. ears to

  1394. hear it

  1395. and a

  1396. heart to

  1397. receive it?

  1398. It is

  1399. good to

  1400. pray,

  1401. God,

  1402. God,

  1403. bless my

  1404. daughter as

  1405. she goes

  1406. to college.

  1407. It is

  1408. better to

  1409. pray,

  1410. Lord,

  1411. send a

  1412. campus

  1413. minister to

  1414. her dorm

  1415. room door

  1416. this week.

  1417. It is

  1418. good to

  1419. pray,

  1420. Lord,

  1421. bless your

  1422. church.

  1423. Would you

  1424. bless

  1425. Seawee Bay?

  1426. It is

  1427. better to

  1428. pray,

  1429. God,

  1430. would you

  1431. send us

  1432. 50 children,

  1433. five more

  1434. elders?

  1435. God,

  1436. would you

  1437. give us

  1438. the funds

  1439. and the

  1440. resources to

  1441. expand this

  1442. room and

  1443. add a

  1444. hundred more

  1445. seats?

  1446. And God,

  1447. would you

  1448. fill every

  1449. single one?

  1450. Not for

  1451. our sake,

  1452. Lord,

  1453. but for

  1454. your sake,

  1455. because we

  1456. know,

  1457. big picture,

  1458. you are

  1459. committed to

  1460. build your

  1461. church,

  1462. magnify the

  1463. glory of

  1464. God in

  1465. the gospel

  1466. of Jesus

  1467. Christ.

  1468. That's what

  1469. we want to

  1470. see happen.

  1471. Church,

  1472. would you

  1473. be bold

  1474. and specific

  1475. with your

  1476. prayers?

  1477. Finally,

  1478. as we

  1479. pray,

  1480. number five,

  1481. pray in

  1482. a posture

  1483. of trust.

  1484. Look how

  1485. the passage

  1486. ends,

  1487. verse 33.

  1488. Abraham

  1489. here,

  1490. he's done

  1491. negotiating,

  1492. he's said

  1493. his piece,

  1494. he's gotten

  1495. it all

  1496. out,

  1497. and then

  1498. what happens?

  1499. The Lord

  1500. goes his

  1501. way,

  1502. and Abraham

  1503. goes back

  1504. home.

  1505. And we

  1506. have to wait

  1507. until next

  1508. week to see

  1509. what happens.

  1510. All Abraham

  1511. knows at the

  1512. close of our

  1513. passage this

  1514. week is he

  1515. has spoken

  1516. with the

  1517. Lord.

  1518. He has

  1519. spoken with

  1520. God who

  1521. is just,

  1522. who is

  1523. holy,

  1524. God who

  1525. sees all

  1526. and knows

  1527. all and

  1528. will do

  1529. what is

  1530. right.

  1531. He's been

  1532. as specific

  1533. as he can

  1534. in his

  1535. prayers.

  1536. He's laid

  1537. it all

  1538. out.

  1539. And so

  1540. now,

  1541. Abraham can

  1542. go back

  1543. home in

  1544. confidence

  1545. that God

  1546. will do

  1547. what is

  1548. right.

  1549. right.

  1550. The judge

  1551. of all

  1552. the earth

  1553. will do

  1554. what is

  1555. just.

  1556. He doesn't

  1557. have to

  1558. worry about

  1559. the results,

  1560. does he?

  1561. That's in

  1562. God's hands.

  1563. Church, you

  1564. realize prayer

  1565. is where

  1566. worry goes

  1567. to die,

  1568. don't you?

  1569. Because we

  1570. pray with

  1571. confidence

  1572. and trust

  1573. that the

  1574. Lord will

  1575. do what

  1576. is right.

  1577. Church, do

  1578. you pray

  1579. like this?

  1580. When we

  1581. come before

  1582. the Lord

  1583. and bring

  1584. our request

  1585. to him,

  1586. you may

  1587. get what

  1588. you ask

  1589. for in

  1590. this life

  1591. and you

  1592. may not.

  1593. You may

  1594. see the

  1595. Lord move

  1596. quickly and

  1597. immediately

  1598. and you

  1599. may not.

  1600. You may

  1601. get justice

  1602. in this

  1603. life and

  1604. you may

  1605. not.

  1606. But church,

  1607. in every

  1608. case, when

  1609. we get up

  1610. off of our

  1611. knees and

  1612. when we say

  1613. amen, we

  1614. can leave

  1615. in confidence

  1616. and trust

  1617. that we

  1618. leave it

  1619. in the

  1620. hands of

  1621. a fully

  1622. good and

  1623. capable

  1624. God.

  1625. We can

  1626. trust that

  1627. the judge

  1628. of all

  1629. the earth

  1630. will do

  1631. what is

  1632. just.

  1633. Do you

  1634. believe this?

  1635. I want to

  1636. close with

  1637. Jesus'

  1638. parable from

  1639. Luke chapter

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  1640. 18 as we

  1641. end our

  1642. time together.

  1643. It says,

  1644. Jesus told

  1645. them a

  1646. parable to

  1647. the effect

  1648. that they

  1649. ought always

  1650. to pray

  1651. and not

  1652. lose

  1653. heart.

  1654. He said,

  1655. in a certain

  1656. city there

  1657. was a

  1658. judge who

  1659. neither feared

  1660. God nor

  1661. respected

  1662. man.

  1663. There was

  1664. this widow

  1665. in that

  1666. city who

  1667. kept coming

  1668. to him

  1669. and saying,

  1670. give me

  1671. justice

  1672. against my

  1673. adversary.

  1674. For a

  1675. while he

  1676. refused,

  1677. but afterward

  1678. he said

  1679. to him,

  1680. though I

  1681. neither fear

  1682. God nor

  1683. respect man,

  1684. yet because

  1685. this widow

  1686. keeps bothering

  1687. me, I

  1688. will give

  1689. her justice

  1690. so that

  1691. she will

  1692. not beat

  1693. me down

  1694. by her

  1695. continual

  1696. coming.

  1697. The Lord

  1698. said,

  1699. hear what

  1700. this unrighteous

  1701. judge says,

  1702. and will

  1703. not God

  1704. give justice

  1705. to his

  1706. elect who

  1707. cried to

  1708. him day

  1709. and night?

  1710. Will he

  1711. delay long

  1712. over them?

  1713. I tell you,

  1714. he will give

  1715. justice to

  1716. them speedily.

  1717. Nevertheless,

  1718. when the

  1719. son of man

  1720. comes,

  1721. will he

  1722. find faith

  1723. on earth?

  1724. Father,

  1725. you are

  1726. good and

  1727. you are

  1728. holy.

  1729. You are

  1730. righteous in

  1731. all your

  1732. ways.

  1733. We praise

  1734. you,

  1735. Lord,

  1736. that you

  1737. hear us

  1738. and you

  1739. love us

  1740. in Christ.

  1741. And we

  1742. pray now,

  1743. even as

  1744. we've heard

  1745. from your

  1746. word,

  1747. God,

  1748. would you

  1749. take it

  1750. and would

  1751. you cause

  1752. it to

  1753. bear fruit

  1754. in us

  1755. this morning?

  1756. Specifically,

  1757. God,

  1758. specifically,

  1759. we ask,

  1760. would you

  1761. bring

  1762. some

  1763. this morning

  1764. who are

  1765. in this

  1766. category

  1767. of the

  1768. wicked?

  1769. And would

  1770. you bring

  1771. them to

  1772. faith and

  1773. repentance

  1774. this morning?

  1775. And for

  1776. your church,

  1777. God,

  1778. we pray that

  1779. each of us

  1780. would go from

  1781. here,

  1782. Lord,

  1783. praying in

  1784. confidence that

  1785. the judge of

  1786. all the earth

  1787. will do

  1788. what is just.

  1789. We pray this

  1790. in Jesus' name.

  1791. Amen.

  1792. Amen.

  1793. Amen.

  1794. Amen.

  1795. Amen.

  1796. Amen.

  1797. Amen.
