  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to Genesis chapter 19.

    Genesis 19 chapter mention

  2. ! Genesis chapter 19.

    Genesis 19 chapter mention

  3. And when you found it, if you would stand in honor of the reading of God's word.

  4. Genesis chapter 19 this morning.

    Genesis 19 chapter mention

  5. The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom.

  6. And when Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth and said,

  7. My lords, please turn aside to your servant's house and spend the night and wash your feet.

  8. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.

  9. And they said, No, we will spend the night in the town square.

  10. But he pressed them strongly, so they turned aside to him and entered his house.

  11. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

  12. But before they lay down, the men of the city and the men of Sodom, both young and old,

  13. all the people to the last man, surrounded the house.

  14. And they called to Lot, Where are the men who came to you tonight?

  15. Bring them out to us that we may know them.

  16. Lot went out to the men at the entrance, shut the door after him, and said,

  17. I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly.

  18. Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man.

  19. Let me bring them out to you and do to them as you please.

  20. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.

  21. But they said, Stand back.

  22. And they said, This fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge.

  23. Now we will deal worse with you than with them.

  24. Then they pressed hard against the man Lot and drew near to break the door down.

  25. But the men reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them and shut the door.

  26. And they struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house,

  27. both small and great, so that they wore themselves out, groping for the door.

  28. Then the men said to Lot, Have you anyone else here?

  29. Sons-in-laws, sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city, bring them out of the place.

  30. For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the Lord,

  31. and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.

  32. So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters,

  33. Up, get out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city.

  34. But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.

  35. As morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, Up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here,

  36. lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city.

  37. But he lingered.

  38. So the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the Lord being merciful to him.

  39. And they brought him out and set him outside the city.

  40. And as they brought him out, one said, Escape for your life.

  41. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley.

  42. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.

  43. And Lot said to them, Oh no, my lords.

  44. Behold, your servant has found favor in your sight,

  45. and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life.

  46. But I cannot escape to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me and I die.

  47. Behold, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one.

  48. Let me escape there.

  49. Is it not a little one?

  50. And my life will be saved.

  51. He said to him, Behold, I grant you this favor also,

  52. that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.

  53. Escape there quickly, for I can do nothing till you arrive there.

  54. Therefore, the name of the city was called Zoar.

  55. The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar.

  56. Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven.

  57. And he overthrew those cities and all the valley and all the inhabitants of the cities

  58. and what grew on the ground.

  59. But Lot's wife behind him looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

  60. And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord,

  61. and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the valley.

  62. And he looked, and behold, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.

  63. So it was that when God destroyed the cities of the valley,

  64. God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow

  65. when he overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived.

  66. Now Lot went up out of Zoar and lived in the hills with his two daughters,

  67. for he was afraid to live in Zoar.

  68. So he lived in a cave with his two daughters,

  69. and the firstborn said to the younger,

  70. Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come into us

  71. after the manner of all the earth.

  72. Come, let us make our father drink wine,

  73. and we will lie with him that we may preserve offspring from our father.

  74. So they made their father drink wine that night,

  75. and the firstborn went in and lay with her father.

  76. He did not know when she lay down or when she arose.

  77. The next morning the firstborn said to the younger,

  78. Behold, I lay last night with my father.

  79. Let us make him drink wine tonight also,

  80. then you go in and lie with him,

  81. that we may preserve offspring from our father.

  82. So they made their father drink wine that night also,

  83. and the younger arose and lay with him,

  84. and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.

  85. Thus both the daughters of Lot became pregnant by their father.

  86. The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab.

  87. He is the father of the Moabites to this day.

  88. The younger also bore a son and called his name Ben-Ami.

  89. He is the father of the Ammonites to this day.

  90. The grass withers, the flower fades.

  91. The word of the Lord endures forever.

  92. Father God,

  93. our sin is dark and it is deep.

  94. Lord, it affects every part of us.

  95. It affects our mind.

  96. It affects our desires.

  97. It affects our will.

  98. It affects our flesh.

  99. All of it is by nature corrupted by sin,

  100. and we just see it so clearly here in our passage.

  101. So Lord, we thank you even for the song that we sang this morning,

  102. that our sins are many, but your mercy is more.

  103. Lord, we thank you for Christ, who is the Savior of sinners,

  104. and the grace that you've shown us in him.

  105. So Lord, help us now, Father, to see our sin clearly,

  106. and to see your grace for us in Christ afresh this morning.

  107. We pray in Jesus' name.

  108. Amen.

  109. You may be seated.

  110. The Bible is not shy about the reality of such a thing called sin.

  111. We had two chapters in the Garden of Eden,

  112. a long time ago now.

  113. Two chapters in this garden paradise

  114. where there was perfect relationship between man and wife,

  115. perfect relationship between mankind and God,

  116. perfect harmony between all things.

  117. There's no sin, there's no shame, there's no guilt, there's no death.

  118. In Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  119. comes, sin enters the world,

  120. that crucial Jenga piece is pulled out,

  121. and the tower comes crumbling down to the ground.

  122. Now, we don't really like to talk about our sin.

  123. You know, one of the blessings and challenges

  124. of preaching through books of the Bible,

  125. like we're doing now through Genesis,

  126. is that I really can't pass over passages

  127. that are hard or uncomfortable, can I?

  128. We have to deal with God's Word as it stands.

  129. We need to open it up and see it as it's written,

  130. as uncomfortable as it may be.

  131. This passage, as uncomfortable as it may be,

  132. is a vivid illustration of the seriousness

  133. and the ugliness of sin,

  134. but not just sin in general,

  135. and not just sin out there.

  136. I hope what we'll see as we go through this together

  137. is that this is a picture of our sin.

  138. This is the seriousness and the darkness

  139. and the ugliness of our sin.

  140. We need to hold passages like this up like a mirror

  141. so that we see ourselves in these passages.

  142. It's important that we do this

  143. because it's only against this dark, black backdrop of our sin

  144. that we can see the light of the grace of the glory of God

  145. shine forth clearly in the gospel of Christ.

  146. So let's take a look.

  147. Genesis chapter 19.

    Genesis 19 chapter mention

  148. And what we'll see here this morning is three sins of Sodom.

  149. Three sins of Sodom.

  150. This will be our outline this morning if you're taking notes.

  151. First,

  152. First, we see sinful actions here.

  153. Sinful actions.

  154. And we can think about this in two categories.

  155. Kevin DeYoung was helpful for me

  156. in thinking through these two categories this week.

  157. The first is social sin.

  158. Look there with me, starting in verse 1.

  159. Verse 1 says that

  160. the two angels came to Sodom in the evening

  161. and here's Lot sitting in the gate of Sodom.

  162. Now notice the progression that Lot's made here

  163. over the past several weeks.

  164. You notice this?

  165. At first, Lot lived near Sodom.

  166. And then we saw him living in Sodom.

  167. And now he's like the welcoming committee at the gate.

  168. He's there right there,

  169. the first thing you see when you come to the town of Sodom.

  170. He has fully ingrained himself here in the community.

  171. Lot sees these two angels coming,

  172. these two men,

  173. and he rises to meet them.

  174. He bows himself down.

  175. He invites them to come stay at his house,

  176. but they politely decline.

  177. They say, no, we're going to go stay instead.

  178. Lot's head in the town square.

  179. It's almost like you can see the alarm bells in Lot's mind

  180. as they say this.

  181. He says, no, no, no, no, no, no.

  182. Whatever you do, don't do that.

  183. He insists, you must come stay with me.

  184. So, instead, they turn aside.

  185. They come to him.

  186. They go to his house.

  187. And what we see happen here is that Lot,

  188. just like Abraham before him in chapter 18,

  189. Lot plays host to these two men.

  190. He is a good, hospitable, welcoming host to these two guests.

  191. He makes them a feast.

  192. He bakes them bread.

  193. He feeds them.

  194. He gives them shelter.

  195. He gives them food.

  196. And all together, he is, I would say,

  197. incredibly hospitable to these two men that he just met, isn't he?

  198. And this is a good thing.

  199. This is an important concept for Christians.

  200. Christians are called to be hospitable.

  201. And that word, when you break it down,

  202. it simply means love of strangers.

  203. It's not quite like Southern hospitality,

  204. as you might read about in Southern Living magazine

  205. or anything like that.

  206. You don't have to make a pot of sweet tea

  207. and set out the pies and make sure the house is clean.

  208. It's not that type of hospitality.

  209. It is simply welcoming others into your life,

  210. into your home, providing shelter,

  211. providing love and care for strangers.

  212. And Christians are called to do this

  213. because we understand that God has loved us.

  214. When we were strangers and aliens from the household of God,

  215. God has shown hospitality to us.

  216. So Lot here, he's doing what all Christians are called to do.

  217. He's going out of his way to love and to serve and to protect

  218. and to show hospitality to others.

  219. That's Lot.

  220. But the men of Sodom, on the other hand,

  221. are not as hospitable, are they?

  222. And verse 4 says,

  223. Before they lay down the men of the city,

  224. the men of Sodom, young and old,

  225. all the people to the last man,

  226. they surround the house.

  227. And Lot here, he protects them,

  228. he shelters them,

  229. but the men of Sodom,

  230. they obviously,

  231. they don't care about the well-being of these two men,

  232. do they?

  233. They want to use them for their own selfish purposes.

  234. At a very minimum,

  235. this is social sin on a social level.

  236. In fact, Ezekiel 16,

  237. if you go read in Ezekiel chapter 16,

    Ezekiel 16 chapter mention

  238. it talks about Sodom,

  239. it references this instance,

  240. and it says about their sin,

  241. that they had excess of food,

  242. they had prosperous ease,

  243. but they did not aid the poor and the needy.

  244. So that's one issue.

  245. But that's not the only issue, is it?

  246. Now, it never ceases to amaze me,

  247. as you read commentaries,

  248. and kind of try to dig down into passages like this,

  249. how modern critical scholars and commentators

  250. can just twist themselves up,

  251. all into different sorts of knots,

  252. trying to avoid the obvious meaning of a passage.

  253. Right?

  254. And they try to explain it away,

  255. any way they can,

  256. to get around something that they don't like.

  257. So, some scholars will read this,

  258. and argue that, well,

  259. social sin is the only issue going on here in Sodom.

  260. It's just sin on a social level.

  261. But of course,

  262. we see another issue here, don't we?

  263. There's also a second issue,

  264. sexual sin.

  265. Sexual sin.

  266. The men here surround the house,

  267. all the men, by the way,

  268. young and old,

  269. to the very last one,

  270. they all surround the house,

  271. they cry out to Lot,

  272. bring those two men out here,

  273. that we may know them.

  274. That's sexual language.

  275. They don't want to have a conversation

  276. with these two men.

  277. They want to get to know them

  278. in an intimate way.

  279. They surround the place,

  280. they bang on the door,

  281. they demand that Lot give up these two guests,

  282. so that they can have their way with them.

  283. Well, clearly, this is sexual sin.

  284. And again, some would argue,

  285. well, the sin here,

  286. it must be that,

  287. well, this is a group.

  288. It's a group issue.

  289. It's not a loving,

  290. one-on-one,

  291. committed relationship,

  292. and so that's what's wrong here.

  293. It's not the proper context

  294. for sexual expression,

  295. and we would agree with that, right?

  296. That is true.

  297. Yes, we agree.

  298. God has designed sexual expression

  299. for a committed,

  300. one-to-one relationship

  301. within the boundaries of marriage.

  302. That's the context.

  303. But that's not all that's going on here.

  304. Still, some would say,

  305. well, the sin here is that it's forceful.

  306. It's aggressive.

  307. It's selfish.

  308. They're forcing this on these people

  309. that they don't want it.

  310. That's what's wrong here.

  311. It's aggressive.

  312. And again,

  313. we would agree.

  314. That is true as well.

  315. God has designed sexual expression

  316. to be mutual

  317. and enjoyable for both partners.

  318. It's an opportunity to serve,

  319. not to just take.

  320. But again,

  321. that is not all that's going on here,

  322. is it?

  323. And you know,

  324. often when you read comments like this,

  325. it's ignoring

  326. the pretty obvious

  327. but uncomfortable truth

  328. in this passage,

  329. which is this.

  330. It is also true,

  331. alongside all the others,

  332. it is also true

  333. that the homosexual nature

  334. of this sin

  335. is wicked.

  336. What begs these men,

  337. don't act so wickedly,

  338. take my daughters instead,

  339. which is just a terrible thought, right?

  340. I can't even imagine that.

  341. But it is interesting,

  342. isn't it,

  343. that in Lot's calculations,

  344. it would be less wicked

  345. to take the daughters

  346. than it would be

  347. to take these two men.

  348. He understands that

  349. in the eyes of God,

  350. same-sex relations

  351. is especially sinful.

  352. Jude chapter 7,

  353. Jude verse 7 rather,

  354. Jude verse 7,

  355. says,

  356. Sodom and Gomorrah

  357. and the nearby towns

  358. indulged in sexual immorality

  359. and pursued unnatural desire,

  360. it says.

  361. And so we have to ask,

  362. don't we,

  363. well, what does that mean?

  364. What is that unnatural desire?

  365. And again,

  366. yet again,

  367. modern critics will say,

  368. well,

  369. it was unnatural

  370. because these were two angels.

  371. That's the issue.

  372. It's unnatural

  373. for men to have relations

  374. with angels.

  375. That's the unnatural disaster.

  376. But ask yourself,

  377. do you really think

  378. these men of Sodom

  379. knew that these were two angels?

  380. All they knew

  381. was that two new guys

  382. had come to town.

  383. That's it.

  384. We have to be clear

  385. where the Bible is clear.

  386. Amen?

  387. Church,

  388. we have to be clear

  389. where the Bible is clear.

  390. And while our culture

  391. may be very confused

  392. on some of these topics,

  393. the Bible is not.

  394. Oh,

  395. this is not a murky issue

  396. in the Bible.

  397. We may take issue

  398. with what the Bible says.

  399. We may disagree

  400. with what the Bible

  401. clearly says,

  402. but we need to understand

  403. what the Bible

  404. clearly says.

  405. The Bible's not unclear

  406. about this.

  407. Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  408. is not unclear at all,

  409. is it?

  410. Talking about those

  411. who suppress the truth

  412. about God,

  413. here's what he says.

  414. He says,

  415. women exchanged

  416. natural relations

  417. for those that are

  418. contrary to nature,

  419. and the men likewise

  420. gave up natural relations

  421. with women

  422. and were consumed

  423. with passion

  424. for one another.

  425. Men committing

  426. shameless acts

  427. with men

  428. and receiving

  429. in themselves

  430. the due penalty

  431. for their error.

  432. Friend,

  433. we need to be clear

  434. on this

  435. because the Bible

  436. is clear on this.

  437. God has designed

  438. sexual expression

  439. to exist

  440. only within

  441. the boundaries

  442. of one man

  443. and one woman

  444. in the covenant

  445. of marriage.

  446. Anything outside

  447. of those good boundaries

  448. is sinful

  449. and wicked

  450. in the eyes of God.

  451. Our statement of faith

  452. as a church,

  453. this is what we confess

  454. to believe

  455. as a church family.

  456. We have an article

  457. in it at the very end

  458. that I think really

  459. clarifies this issue

  460. for us well.

  461. This is the understanding

  462. of the church universal

  463. for the past 2,000 years.

  464. It says,

  465. we believe that marriage

  466. is the uniting

  467. of one man

  468. and one woman

  469. before God

  470. in covenant commitment

  471. for a lifetime.

  472. That God has established

  473. marriage

  474. as his only intended channel

  475. for human sexual expression

  476. and procreation.

  477. and that God calls

  478. all unmarried people

  479. to celibacy

  480. and devotion

  481. to himself.

  482. It goes on.

  483. Departures

  484. from God's design

  485. for human sexuality

  486. including

  487. adultery,

  488. fornication,

  489. homosexual behavior,

  490. and all other forms

  491. of sexual immorality

  492. as defined by scripture

  493. are sinful.

  494. You hear that broad category?

  495. Don't stop there.

  496. Keep reading.

  497. In these matters,

  498. God offers forgiveness

  499. and restoration

  500. for sin

  501. through his son,

  502. Jesus Christ.

  503. And Christians

  504. should always act

  505. in the spirit of love

  506. towards all people

  507. without compromising

  508. their loyalty

  509. to Christ

  510. and his truth.

  511. Friend,

  512. we believe

  513. any departure

  514. from God's design

  515. for human sexuality

  516. is sinful.

  517. But praise God,

  518. we also believe

  519. there is hope

  520. for sinners

  521. like us.

  522. We believe

  523. Jesus stands

  524. with arms open

  525. wide,

  526. ready and willing

  527. to receive

  528. and to forgive

  529. and to wash clean

  530. sinners of all kinds.

  531. the hope

  532. that we hold

  533. out to the world,

  534. the hope

  535. that we hold

  536. out to sinners

  537. like us

  538. is the gospel

  539. of Jesus Christ.

  540. And we don't

  541. hold that hope

  542. out as those

  543. who are superior

  544. in any way

  545. to any sinner

  546. on the earth.

  547. We call out,

  548. repent

  549. and believe

  550. the gospel

  551. of Jesus Christ

  552. and you too,

  553. like me,

  554. you too

  555. can be saved.

  556. how often

  557. when we

  558. hold out

  559. that hope

  560. and that good news,

  561. how often

  562. is that message

  563. not well received,

  564. church?

  565. So second,

  566. second,

  567. we see here

  568. sinful attitudes.

  569. Look there

  570. again to verse 9.

  571. See,

  572. the men of the city

  573. are pressing hard

  574. against Lot,

  575. they're going to break

  576. down the door

  577. and just going to go

  578. get those two angels,

  579. but look here

  580. at this act of mercy,

  581. the two angels,

  582. they reach out

  583. their hands,

  584. they bring Lot

  585. back into the house

  586. with them,

  587. they shut the door,

  588. they rescue Lot,

  589. they strike all these

  590. men with blindness.

  591. It was a sort of

  592. partial judgment here.

  593. Partial judgment

  594. and partial salvation.

  595. But Lot's not

  596. out of the woods yet.

  597. The men of the city

  598. are still,

  599. even after being blinded,

  600. they're still groping

  601. at the door,

  602. still chasing after

  603. the desires of their flesh.

  604. So these men,

  605. the angels here,

  606. they give a warning

  607. to Lot.

  608. They say,

  609. have you anybody else

  610. here?

  611. Sons-in-laws,

  612. daughters,

  613. anybody else

  614. that you have

  615. in the city,

  616. bring them out

  617. of this place

  618. because we're about

  619. to destroy this place.

  620. What's the warning?

  621. Judgment is coming.

  622. Judgment is coming soon.

  623. It is imminent

  624. and you need

  625. to get yourself ready.

  626. That's the warning.

  627. How similar is that

  628. to the message

  629. that we proclaim?

  630. We proclaim

  631. salvation

  632. in the name

  633. of Jesus.

  634. But we need

  635. to ask again,

  636. well salvation

  637. from what?

  638. We proclaim

  639. that Jesus

  640. is the Savior.

  641. Well Savior

  642. from what?

  643. Why do I need

  644. to be saved?

  645. What am I being

  646. saved from?

  647. Well,

  648. we hold out

  649. Jesus Christ

  650. as the Savior

  651. of sinners

  652. who saves us

  653. from the wrath

  654. of God

  655. that we have

  656. earned for our sin.

  657. We proclaim

  658. the bad news.

  659. Judgment is coming

  660. and we are

  661. deserving of judgment,

  662. every last one of us.

  663. But we hold out

  664. the good news

  665. that Christ,

  666. Jesus,

  667. God has made

  668. a way of salvation

  669. in Christ.

  670. And we have

  671. to have both

  672. as we proclaim

  673. the gospel,

  674. don't we?

  675. But that bad news

  676. is not popular

  677. to put it lightly,

  678. is it?

  679. Look there

  680. to verse 14.

  681. And here,

  682. I want us to see,

  683. we see the first

  684. of three sinful

  685. attitudes here.

  686. These are sinful

  687. reactions to this

  688. warning.

  689. And I wonder

  690. if you've ever

  691. run into any of these

  692. as you talk

  693. about the gospel,

  694. as you talk

  695. about salvation,

  696. as you share

  697. the gospel

  698. with others.

  699. Three sinful

  700. attitudes.

  701. The first is

  702. from Lot's

  703. sons-in-law.

  704. He goes out

  705. to them,

  706. verse 14,

  707. and he says,

  708. Up!

  709. Get out of this

  710. place!

  711. The Lord is about

  712. to destroy the city!

  713. But he seemed

  714. to his sons-in-law

  715. to be jesting.

  716. It's a joke.

  717. That's the first

  718. sinful attitude

  719. towards the warning.

  720. It's all just

  721. a big joke.

  722. This isn't actually

  723. going to happen.

  724. Are you kidding me?

  725. You're just some

  726. religious maniac.

  727. That's hilarious.

  728. What are you

  729. talking about?

  730. There's no judgment

  731. coming.

  732. My life is

  733. great.

  734. I got all the

  735. money I need.

  736. I'm happy.

  737. I can do

  738. whatever I want.

  739. Some people

  740. just hear this

  741. and they laugh

  742. it off.

  743. You're just

  744. some religious

  745. nut talking

  746. about judgment.

  747. It's one

  748. response.

  749. It's another

  750. here in verse

  751. 15.

  752. Look here.

  753. Morning comes

  754. and Lot

  755. is still there.

  756. The sun

  757. comes up

  758. and judgment

  759. is coming.

  760. The angels

  761. have warned him

  762. but he doesn't

  763. really seem to be

  764. in any sort of

  765. hurry,

  766. does he?

  767. The angels

  768. go.

  769. They're urging

  770. Lot,

  771. get up,

  772. get your wife,

  773. get your daughters,

  774. get out of here.

  775. Judgment

  776. is coming.

  777. How does he

  778. respond?

  779. Verse 16.

  780. It says he

  781. lingered.

  782. The second

  783. sinful response

  784. to this warning

  785. is it's not

  786. urgent.

  787. I hear you.

  788. This warning

  789. may be real.

  790. Maybe it is,

  791. maybe it's not,

  792. but I have

  793. all the time

  794. in the world.

  795. It's not

  796. urgent.

  797. I can go

  798. about my

  799. business as

  800. usual.

  801. I'll get

  802. around to it

  803. when I get

  804. around to it.

  805. This repentance

  806. business,

  807. sure,

  808. I hear you.

  809. That's good.

  810. I'll get to it.

  811. Let me live

  812. my life first.

  813. The truth is,

  814. friend,

  815. you do not

  816. know when

  817. you will meet

  818. God.

  819. You do not

  820. know when

  821. you'll die.

  822. You do not

  823. know when

  824. you will stand

  825. before the

  826. judge.

  827. You do not

  828. know when

  829. Christ will

  830. return.

  831. And it is

  832. foolish to

  833. just linger

  834. in your sin

  835. and to linger

  836. with that

  837. warning somewhere

  838. there in the

  839. back of your

  840. mind thinking

  841. I'll get

  842. around to it

  843. eventually when

  844. I'm ready.

  845. God may be

  846. ready before

  847. you are.

  848. Don't linger.

  849. Lot here

  850. lingers,

  851. but thankfully

  852. the Lord is

  853. merciful to him.

  854. See,

  855. the men

  856. seize him

  857. and his

  858. wife and

  859. his two

  860. daughters by

  861. the hand.

  862. They bring

  863. him out,

  864. the Lord

  865. being merciful

  866. to him.

  867. They bring

  868. him out,

  869. they set

  870. him outside

  871. the city

  872. and as

  873. they brought

  874. them out,

  875. one said,

  876. this warning

  877. again,

  878. escape for

  879. your life.

  880. Don't stop,

  881. don't look back.

  882. Don't stop

  883. anywhere in the

  884. valley.

  885. Escape to the

  886. hills,

  887. lest you get

  888. swept away.

  889. They bring

  890. Lot out and

  891. he goes and

  892. he settles in

  893. the land of

  894. Zoar.

  895. And again,

  896. this is a

  897. small picture

  898. of salvation,

  899. isn't it?

  900. God's

  901. elect is

  902. plucked out

  903. of the

  904. fire,

  905. preserved from

  906. judgment,

  907. kicking and

  908. screaming it

  909. seems in

  910. Lot's case,

  911. but God by

  912. his grace,

  913. he shows

  914. mercy to

  915. him,

  916. he rescues

  917. him from

  918. the judgment

  919. to come.

  920. This is a

  921. picture of

  922. salvation,

  923. isn't it?

  924. But we

  925. also see a

  926. picture of

  927. judgment,

  928. the opposite

  929. side of the

  930. same coin

  931. here in

  932. verse 23.

  933. Lot makes

  934. it safely

  935. out,

  936. and the

  937. Lord rained

  938. on Sodom

  939. and Gomorrah

  940. sulfur and

  941. fire from

  942. the Lord

  943. out of

  944. heaven.

  945. And he

  946. overthrew

  947. those cities

  948. and all

  949. the valley

  950. and all

  951. the inhabitants

  952. of the

  953. cities and

  954. everything that

  955. grew on

  956. the ground,

  957. Sodom and

  958. Gomorrah

  959. and everyone

  960. in them,

  961. everything in

  962. them,

  963. they're all

  964. judged for

  965. their sin.

  966. the wrath

  967. of God

  968. is poured

  969. out against

  970. their sin.

  971. It's just a

  972. terrible thought.

  973. Friend,

  974. as we read

  975. this,

  976. don't make

  977. the mistake

  978. of reading

  979. this just

  980. as a

  981. history lesson

  982. of something

  983. that happened

  984. way back

  985. then in

  986. Genesis

  987. that has

  988. nothing to

  989. do with

  990. your life

  991. now,

  992. as if God

  993. has maybe

  994. somehow

  995. mellowed

  996. out towards

  997. sin now.

  998. He's kind

  999. of calm

  1000. down here

  1001. in the

  1002. New Testament.

  1003. He's not

  1004. as angry

  1005. towards our

  1006. sin anymore.

  1007. 2 Peter

  1008. tells us

  1009. that the

  1010. Lord

  1011. turned the

  1012. cities of

  1013. Sodom and

  1014. Gomorrah

  1015. to ashes

  1016. and condemned

  1017. them to

  1018. extinction,

  1019. making them

  1020. an example

  1021. of what

  1022. is going

  1023. to happen

  1024. to the

  1025. ungodly.

  1026. Jude,

  1027. again,

  1028. says something

  1029. similar.

  1030. Again,

  1031. in verse 7,

  1032. it says,

  1033. Sodom and

  1034. Gomorrah,

  1035. they serve

  1036. as an

  1037. example.

  1038. by undergoing

  1039. a punishment

  1040. of eternal

  1041. fire.

  1042. So,

  1043. we should

  1044. ask,

  1045. shouldn't we?

  1046. Well,

  1047. an example

  1048. for whom?

  1049. An example

  1050. of what?

  1051. And I think

  1052. you know

  1053. the answer,

  1054. don't you?

  1055. This terrible

  1056. judgment here

  1057. in Genesis

    Genesis 19 chapter mention

  1058. chapter 19,

  1059. fire and

  1060. sulfur,

  1061. complete

  1062. destruction,

  1063. all of this

  1064. is a

  1065. partial

  1066. pointer,

  1067. a picture,

  1068. is an

  1069. example of

  1070. an even

  1071. greater

  1072. destruction

  1073. yet to

  1074. come upon

  1075. the wicked

  1076. at the

  1077. return of

  1078. Christ.

  1079. We ought

  1080. to grieve

  1081. this truth,

  1082. church.

  1083. Does that

  1084. sit heavy

  1085. with you?

  1086. Look around

  1087. yourself and

  1088. ask,

  1089. is our

  1090. nation any

  1091. better off

  1092. than Sodom?

  1093. Are we

  1094. morally

  1095. superior in

  1096. any way

  1097. to the

  1098. men of

  1099. Sodom?

  1100. Are we

  1101. better off

  1102. than this

  1103. nation that

  1104. God

  1105. poured out

  1106. His wrath

  1107. and destroyed

  1108. with fire?

  1109. Billy Graham

  1110. wrote in a

  1111. book about

  1112. the moral

  1113. decay of

  1114. this nation.

  1115. This was

  1116. years ago.

  1117. And when

  1118. His wife

  1119. Ruth read

  1120. it,

  1121. she said,

  1122. you know,

  1123. if God

  1124. doesn't punish

  1125. America,

  1126. He's going

  1127. to have to

  1128. apologize to

  1129. Sodom and

  1130. Gomorrah.

  1131. God will

  1132. judge America

  1133. and every

  1134. other nation

  1135. of the

  1136. earth that

  1137. remains in

  1138. rebellion

  1139. against the

  1140. Lord.

  1141. The wicked

  1142. of the

  1143. earth are

  1144. storing up

  1145. wrath for

  1146. themselves by

  1147. rebelling

  1148. against the

  1149. Lord and

  1150. pursuing their

  1151. flesh,

  1152. pursuing

  1153. unnatural

  1154. desire,

  1155. suppressing

  1156. the truth

  1157. about God

  1158. and worshiping

  1159. and serving

  1160. created things

  1161. rather than

  1162. the Creator.

  1163. But you,

  1164. Christian,

  1165. like Lot,

  1166. do not belong

  1167. to this fallen

  1168. nation.

  1169. Praise God.

  1170. You,

  1171. Christian,

  1172. like Lot,

  1173. by the grace

  1174. of God

  1175. alone,

  1176. are being

  1177. plucked out

  1178. of this

  1179. place.

  1180. You do

  1181. not belong

  1182. here.

  1183. You may

  1184. live in a

  1185. wicked city

  1186. in a wicked

  1187. world,

  1188. but you are

  1189. not a

  1190. citizen of

  1191. this place

  1192. ultimately.

  1193. And when

  1194. judgment

  1195. comes,

  1196. you,

  1197. like Lot,

  1198. will be

  1199. preserved and

  1200. sheltered in a

  1201. place of

  1202. safety,

  1203. covered by

  1204. the blood

  1205. of Christ.

  1206. Christ.

  1207. But,

  1208. Christian,

  1209. as you

  1210. are journeying

  1211. out,

  1212. we must

  1213. not make

  1214. the mistake

  1215. of Lot's

  1216. wife.

  1217. Look there

  1218. to verse 26.

  1219. This is the

  1220. third sinful

  1221. attitude here.

  1222. The angels

  1223. gave this

  1224. command,

  1225. don't look

  1226. back.

  1227. Verse 26,

  1228. but Lot's

  1229. wife,

  1230. behind him,

  1231. she looked

  1232. back.

  1233. and she

  1234. became a

  1235. pillar of

  1236. salt.

  1237. The sons-in-law

  1238. said it's not

  1239. that serious,

  1240. Lot said it's

  1241. not that urgent,

  1242. and Lot's

  1243. wife,

  1244. by her

  1245. actions,

  1246. third sinful

  1247. response,

  1248. she says,

  1249. it's not

  1250. really what I

  1251. want.

  1252. Do I really

  1253. want to be

  1254. delivered from

  1255. this city of

  1256. sin?

  1257. This is my

  1258. home.

  1259. Now,

  1260. you probably

  1261. know what the

  1262. shortest verse

  1263. of the Bible

  1264. is.

  1265. What is it?

  1266. Jesus wept,

  1267. right?

  1268. John 11,

  1269. 35.

  1270. There's one

  1271. that's not

  1272. too far off

  1273. from that,

  1274. Luke 17,

  1275. 32.

  1276. Anybody know

  1277. what it is?

  1278. Remember

  1279. Lot's wife.

  1280. Remember

  1281. Lot's

  1282. wife.

  1283. And what's

  1284. the context?

  1285. Again,

  1286. it's the

  1287. return of

  1288. Christ.

  1289. Here's what

  1290. he says,

  1291. just as it

  1292. was in the

  1293. days of

  1294. Lot,

  1295. they were

  1296. eating and

  1297. drinking,

  1298. they were

  1299. buying and

  1300. selling,

  1301. planting and

  1302. building,

  1303. but on

  1304. that day

  1305. when Lot

  1306. went out

  1307. from Sodom,

  1308. fire and

  1309. sulfur rained

  1310. from heaven

  1311. and destroyed

  1312. them all,

  1313. so will it

  1314. be on the

  1315. day when

  1316. the Son

  1317. of Man

  1318. is revealed.

  1319. On that

  1320. day,

  1321. let the

  1322. one who

  1323. is on

  1324. the housetop

  1325. with his

  1326. goods in

  1327. the house

  1328. not come

  1329. down to

  1330. take them

  1331. away,

  1332. and likewise

  1333. let the

  1334. one who

  1335. is in

  1336. the field

  1337. not turn

  1338. back.

  1339. Remember

  1340. Lot's

  1341. wife.

  1342. Whoever

  1343. seeks to

  1344. preserve

  1345. his life

  1346. will lose

  1347. it,

  1348. but

  1349. whoever

  1350. loses

  1351. his

  1352. life

  1353. will

  1354. keep

  1355. it.

  1356. He

  1357. says

  1358. something

  1359. similar

  1360. in Luke

    Luke 9:32

  1361. 9

  1362. verse 32,

  1363. no one

  1364. who puts

  1365. his hands

  1366. to the

  1367. plow

  1368. and looks

  1369. back

  1370. is fit

  1371. for the

  1372. kingdom

  1373. of God.

  1374. You know,

  1375. when someone

  1376. is saved

  1377. by the grace

  1378. of God,

  1379. what happens

  1380. to them

  1381. is they're

  1382. brought out

  1383. of belonging

  1384. to the

  1385. kingdom

  1386. of darkness.

  1387. They no

  1388. longer belong

  1389. here.

  1390. They are

  1391. plucked

  1392. out

  1393. and with

  1394. that they

  1395. are brought

  1396. out of

  1397. slavery to

  1398. sin.

  1399. These old

  1400. patterns of

  1401. sinful behavior

  1402. and sinful

  1403. actions and

  1404. sinful attitude

  1405. sinful everything

  1406. we no longer

  1407. belong to

  1408. it.

  1409. We no longer

  1410. belong to

  1411. this fallen

  1412. world.

  1413. But sometimes

  1414. our eyes

  1415. can be

  1416. drawn back

  1417. and we can

  1418. say in our

  1419. hearts,

  1420. is this really

  1421. what I want?

  1422. This is the

  1423. Israelites in

  1424. the wilderness

  1425. looking back

  1426. to Egypt

  1427. and saying

  1428. was it so

  1429. bad there?

  1430. Church,

  1431. as we

  1432. journey

  1433. towards our

  1434. final salvation

  1435. we must

  1436. keep our

  1437. eyes fixed

  1438. on Christ.

  1439. Do not

  1440. look back.

  1441. Church,

  1442. we've been

  1443. warned,

  1444. clearly this

  1445. world is

  1446. one day

  1447. going to be

  1448. consumed

  1449. with fire.

  1450. Those who

  1451. are still

  1452. in their

  1453. sins will

  1454. suffer God's

  1455. wrath in

  1456. hell,

  1457. but those

  1458. who are in

  1459. Christ will

  1460. be plucked

  1461. out and

  1462. redeemed by

  1463. the grace

  1464. of God.

  1465. Don't make

  1466. this mistake

  1467. of thinking

  1468. it's not

  1469. serious,

  1470. it's not

  1471. urgent,

  1472. and don't

  1473. look back

  1474. and longing

  1475. for anything

  1476. that you've

  1477. been redeemed

  1478. from.

  1479. We see here

  1480. in verse

  1481. 27,

  1482. Abraham,

  1483. the sun

  1484. comes up,

  1485. Abraham

  1486. comes out,

  1487. he gets

  1488. his morning

  1489. coffee,

  1490. he looks

  1491. down out

  1492. towards

  1493. Sodom,

  1494. and behold

  1495. the smoke

  1496. of the land

  1497. went up

  1498. like the

  1499. smoke of

  1500. a furnace.

  1501. He had

  1502. prayed in

  1503. chapter 18,

  1504. the Lord

  1505. had agreed

  1506. if there

  1507. were even

  1508. ten righteous

  1509. people in

  1510. that city,

  1511. he would

  1512. save the

  1513. whole place

  1514. for their

  1515. sake.

  1516. Well,

  1517. he got

  1518. his answer,

  1519. didn't

  1520. he?

  1521. So we

  1522. see sinful

  1523. actions,

  1524. sinful

  1525. attitudes,

  1526. and we're

  1527. left wondering,

  1528. aren't we?

  1529. Hopefully this

  1530. gets a little

  1531. better from

  1532. here,

  1533. right?

  1534. Hopefully

  1535. there's a

  1536. positive end

  1537. to this

  1538. story.

  1539. I got

  1540. bad news

  1541. for you.

  1542. Third,

  1543. we see

  1544. sinful

  1545. aftermath.

  1546. If you

  1547. thought that

  1548. we were

  1549. going to

  1550. get a

  1551. happy

  1552. conclusion

  1553. to all

  1554. of this,

  1555. sadly,

  1556. you're

  1557. going to

  1558. be

  1559. disappointed.

  1560. Look

  1561. there to

  1562. verse

  1563. 30.

  1564. You know,

  1565. it's

  1566. interesting,

  1567. Lot doesn't

  1568. stay in

  1569. Zoar long,

  1570. does he?

  1571. And we

  1572. don't have

  1573. an explanation

  1574. of why

  1575. he left

  1576. outside of,

  1577. we just

  1578. know that

  1579. he was

  1580. afraid,

  1581. is what

  1582. it says.

  1583. And my

  1584. best guess,

  1585. and this

  1586. is a

  1587. guess,

  1588. my guess

  1589. is that

  1590. maybe he

  1591. realized the

  1592. people in

  1593. Zoar

  1594. weren't much

  1595. better off

  1596. than those

  1597. people in

  1598. Sodom.

  1599. And maybe

  1600. he didn't

  1601. want to be

  1602. around if

  1603. that fire

  1604. came again.

  1605. Zoar

  1606. probably

  1607. wasn't too

  1608. far away,

  1609. it's

  1610. possible that

  1611. they were

  1612. probably into

  1613. the same

  1614. stuff over

  1615. there,

  1616. and so we're

  1617. told that he

  1618. escapes,

  1619. he goes to

  1620. the hills

  1621. with his

  1622. two daughters

  1623. and he

  1624. thinks,

  1625. man,

  1626. wickedness

  1627. won't find

  1628. me here.

  1629. I'm just

  1630. going to

  1631. unplug,

  1632. get off

  1633. the grid,

  1634. and we

  1635. will be

  1636. safe if I

  1637. can just

  1638. get away

  1639. and get

  1640. away from

  1641. all the

  1642. wickedness

  1643. over there,

  1644. wickedness

  1645. won't find

  1646. me here.

  1647. But you

  1648. know the

  1649. story,

  1650. you heard

  1651. it.

  1652. Daughters

  1653. hatch up a

  1654. plan to

  1655. get offspring

  1656. by their

  1657. father,

  1658. so they

  1659. get him

  1660. drunk,

  1661. they take

  1662. turns,

  1663. they go

  1664. both

  1665. get

  1666. themselves

  1667. pregnant.

  1668. And we're

  1669. told,

  1670. actually,

  1671. this is the

  1672. origin story

  1673. for two

  1674. of Israel's

  1675. enemies,

  1676. the Moabites

  1677. and the

  1678. Ammonites

  1679. were told,

  1680. and so the

  1681. Israelites,

  1682. they would

  1683. read this

  1684. and say,

  1685. oh,

  1686. that makes

  1687. sense,

  1688. right?

  1689. These guys,

  1690. I can't

  1691. stand them,

  1692. that makes

  1693. sense where

  1694. they come

  1695. from.

  1696. No wonder.

  1697. But here,

  1698. we see Lot

  1699. has been

  1700. redeemed.

  1701. He's been

  1702. given a second

  1703. chance,

  1704. he's been

  1705. given a new

  1706. beginning.

  1707. This is a

  1708. clean slate

  1709. and a fresh

  1710. start for Lot.

  1711. He's been

  1712. brought out

  1713. of a sinful

  1714. place,

  1715. he's been

  1716. preserved

  1717. from God's

  1718. judgment,

  1719. he's been

  1720. shown God's

  1721. mercy,

  1722. and it kind

  1723. of reminds

  1724. you a little

  1725. bit of Noah,

  1726. doesn't it?

  1727. You remember

  1728. the story

  1729. of Noah?

  1730. Noah and

  1731. his family

  1732. are preserved

  1733. from the

  1734. wrath of

  1735. God.

  1736. God destroys

  1737. all the

  1738. wickedness

  1739. of the

  1740. world,

  1741. washes it

  1742. with judgment.

  1743. Noah comes

  1744. out,

  1745. they're given

  1746. this new

  1747. start,

  1748. and what

  1749. happens

  1750. immediately

  1751. once Boots

  1752. hit the

  1753. ground.

  1754. Sin still

  1755. remains.

  1756. The aftermath

  1757. of all of

  1758. it is still

  1759. sin.

  1760. Lot thought

  1761. that I can

  1762. just go

  1763. escape,

  1764. and maybe I

  1765. can just get

  1766. out of here,

  1767. but we see

  1768. maybe the

  1769. location wasn't

  1770. the main issue,

  1771. was it?

  1772. He's isolated

  1773. out in the

  1774. hills,

  1775. nobody else

  1776. around,

  1777. but they

  1778. carried their

  1779. sin with

  1780. them.

  1781. Sin still

  1782. remains.

  1783. You know,

  1784. sometimes I

  1785. think we

  1786. can fool

  1787. ourselves

  1788. into thinking

  1789. that the

  1790. solution to

  1791. our problems

  1792. is just a

  1793. change,

  1794. right?

  1795. So we

  1796. move jobs,

  1797. we move

  1798. cities,

  1799. we change

  1800. our location,

  1801. we change

  1802. our circumstance,

  1803. we change

  1804. our surroundings,

  1805. and all of

  1806. that may be

  1807. good.

  1808. I think you

  1809. would agree.

  1810. it was good

  1811. for Lot to

  1812. move on

  1813. from Sodom,

  1814. right?

  1815. But we

  1816. need to

  1817. recognize

  1818. that unless

  1819. the heart

  1820. is changed,

  1821. nothing

  1822. changes.

  1823. Sin

  1824. still

  1825. remains.

  1826. Unless

  1827. your heart

  1828. is changed,

  1829. you'll bring

  1830. your sin

  1831. with you

  1832. to your

  1833. new town,

  1834. and your

  1835. new job,

  1836. and your

  1837. new relationship,

  1838. and your

  1839. new church,

  1840. and your

  1841. new

  1842. neighborhood,

  1843. sin must

  1844. be dealt

  1845. with on

  1846. a heart

  1847. level.

  1848. Which

  1849. just shows

  1850. us that

  1851. all of

  1852. this from

  1853. beginning to

  1854. end,

  1855. it shows

  1856. us our

  1857. need for

  1858. a redeemer.

  1859. It shows

  1860. us our

  1861. need for

  1862. Christ.

  1863. Church,

  1864. the bad

  1865. news is

  1866. that all

  1867. of us

  1868. are sinners,

  1869. and we

  1870. see the

  1871. ugliness

  1872. of our

  1873. sin here

  1874. on full

  1875. display,

  1876. don't we?

  1877. And we

  1878. believe that

  1879. our sin

  1880. has earned

  1881. us the

  1882. wrath of

  1883. God.

  1884. That's

  1885. the bad

  1886. news.

  1887. The good

  1888. news of

  1889. the gospel

  1890. is that

  1891. Christ

  1892. Jesus

  1893. came to

  1894. save

  1895. sinners.

  1896. Jesus

  1897. came to

  1898. change us

  1899. from the

  1900. inside out,

  1901. and by

  1902. his spirit

  1903. to give

  1904. us a

  1905. new heart

  1906. that's no

  1907. longer bound

  1908. with shackles

  1909. and chains

  1910. to sin,

  1911. that's free

  1912. to love

  1913. him and

  1914. obey

  1915. him and

  1916. to seek

  1917. him and

  1918. pursue

  1919. him with

  1920. all of

  1921. our heart

  1922. and all

  1923. of our

  1924. mind and

  1925. all of

  1926. our soul

  1927. and all

  1928. of our

  1929. strength.

  1930. Christ

  1931. came to

  1932. bear the

  1933. full wrath

  1934. of God

  1935. against our

  1936. sin.

  1937. Do you

  1938. realize God

  1939. poured out

  1940. his wrath

  1941. against Christ

  1942. in your

  1943. place?

  1944. This picture

  1945. of judgment

  1946. in Genesis

  1947. 19,

  1948. the wrath

  1949. of God,

  1950. we see that

  1951. and we say,

  1952. oh,

  1953. that's mean.

  1954. Do you

  1955. understand Christ

  1956. bore the

  1957. wrath of

  1958. God for

  1959. you?

  1960. So that by

  1961. faith in

  1962. him we

  1963. would be

  1964. washed

  1965. clean,

  1966. made new,

  1967. no longer

  1968. called sinners

  1969. but saints,

  1970. no longer

  1971. belong to the

  1972. kingdom of

  1973. darkness but

  1974. belong to

  1975. the kingdom

  1976. of God.

  1977. It's sobering

  1978. when you read

  1979. a passage like

  1980. this to see

  1981. the weight

  1982. of our sin

  1983. and the

  1984. severity of

  1985. God's judgment

  1986. against wickedness

  1987. but church,

  1988. I hope you

  1989. see it's

  1990. against this

  1991. black backdrop

  1992. that we see

  1993. the grace

  1994. of God

  1995. towards sinners

  1996. in the gospel

  1997. shine so

  1998. clearly.

  1999. Have you

  2000. heard the

  2001. warning?

  2002. Have you

  2003. heard the

  2004. invitation

  2005. this morning?

  2006. Come to

  2007. Christ.

  2008. Come to

  2009. Christ and

  2010. be saved.

  2011. Do not

  2012. turn back.

  2013. Fix your

  2014. eyes on

  2015. Christ.

  2016. God's

  2017. such a

  2018. terrible story

  2019. of sin.

  2020. You might

  2021. wonder,

  2022. maybe you'll

  2023. get a happy

  2024. ending.

  2025. No.

  2026. You might

  2027. wonder,

  2028. can it get

  2029. any worse

  2030. than this?

  2031. And actually,

  2032. yes,

  2033. church,

  2034. it does.

  2035. I want to

  2036. point you to

  2037. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  2038. 11 as we

  2039. close.

  2040. Jesus,

  2041. in Matthew

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  2042. chapter 11,

  2043. he condemns the

  2044. surrounding areas

  2045. of Chorazin

  2046. and Bethsaida.

  2047. And listen to

  2048. what he says.

  2049. He says,

  2050. woe to you,

  2051. Chorazin,

  2052. woe to you,

  2053. Bethsaida,

  2054. for if the

  2055. mighty works

  2056. done in you

  2057. had been done

  2058. in Tyre and

  2059. Sidon,

  2060. they would have

  2061. repented long

  2062. ago in sackcloth

  2063. and ashes.

  2064. But I tell you,

  2065. it will be more

  2066. tolerable on the

  2067. day of judgment

  2068. for the land

  2069. of Sodom

  2070. than for you.

  2071. You hear that?

  2072. It will be

  2073. more tolerable

  2074. on the day

  2075. of judgment

  2076. for Sodom

  2077. than for you.

  2078. Why?

  2079. The English

  2080. Bishop J.C.

  2081. Ryle explains,

  2082. he says,

  2083. it will prove

  2084. more tolerable

  2085. to have lived

  2086. in Tyre,

  2087. Sidon,

  2088. and Sodom

  2089. than to have

  2090. heard the gospel

  2091. in England

  2092. and at last

  2093. die unconverted.

  2094. Do you get it?

  2095. As wicked

  2096. as the men

  2097. of Sodom

  2098. were,

  2099. Jesus says,

  2100. it will be

  2101. more tolerable

  2102. for these

  2103. great sinners

  2104. on the day

  2105. of judgment

  2106. than it will

  2107. be for you

  2108. who have

  2109. heard the gospel

  2110. again and

  2111. again and

  2112. again and

  2113. again and

  2114. have yet

  2115. refused to

  2116. repent and

  2117. believe.

  2118. so hear it

  2119. again,

  2120. non-believer.

  2121. The invitation

  2122. to you,

  2123. turn to

  2124. Christ.

  2125. Would you

  2126. come to

  2127. Christ in

  2128. faith?

  2129. Would you

  2130. escape the

  2131. wrath of God

  2132. that you've

  2133. earned for

  2134. your sin?

  2135. Would you

  2136. look to Him

  2137. in faith and

  2138. trust that He

  2139. has borne

  2140. your penalty

  2141. on the cross?

  2142. Would you

  2143. come to

  2144. Christ?

  2145. And

  2146. Christian,

  2147. here's your

  2148. call.

  2149. Again,

  2150. I'll quote

  2151. from J.C.

  2152. Ryle in a

  2153. sermon called

  2154. Christ's

  2155. greatest

  2156. trophy.

  2157. He urges

  2158. us,

  2159. believer,

  2160. he says,

  2161. tell the

  2162. young,

  2163. tell the

  2164. poor,

  2165. tell the

  2166. aged,

  2167. tell the

  2168. ignorant,

  2169. tell the

  2170. sick,

  2171. tell the

  2172. dying,

  2173. tell them

  2174. all about

  2175. Christ.

  2176. Tell them

  2177. of His

  2178. power and

  2179. tell them

  2180. of His

  2181. love.

  2182. Tell them

  2183. of His

  2184. doings and

  2185. tell them

  2186. of His

  2187. feelings.

  2188. Tell them

  2189. what He

  2190. has done

  2191. for the

  2192. chief of

  2193. sinners.

  2194. Tell them

  2195. what He

  2196. is willing

  2197. to do

  2198. until the

  2199. last day

  2200. of time.

  2201. Tell it

  2202. to them

  2203. over and

  2204. over again.

  2205. Never be

  2206. tired of

  2207. speaking of

  2208. Christ.

  2209. Say to

  2210. them broadly

  2211. and fully,

  2212. freely and

  2213. unconditionally,

  2214. unreservedly

  2215. and undoubtedly,

  2216. come unto

  2217. Christ as the

  2218. penitent thief

  2219. did.

  2220. Come unto

  2221. Christ and

  2222. you shall

  2223. be saved.

  2224. Father,

  2225. as we

  2226. consider

  2227. such things

  2228. as this,

  2229. judgment

  2230. against our

  2231. sin,

  2232. Lord,

  2233. who can

  2234. stand before

  2235. a holy

  2236. God?

  2237. None of

  2238. us on

  2239. our own

  2240. right.

  2241. We are

  2242. all sinful.

  2243. Lord,

  2244. it's only

  2245. by your

  2246. grace in

  2247. Christ,

  2248. only by

  2249. Christ Jesus

  2250. alone,

  2251. that can

  2252. a sinner be

  2253. counted righteous

  2254. in your

  2255. sight.

  2256. We praise

  2257. you,

  2258. Lord,

  2259. for salvation

  2260. from the

  2261. judgment to

  2262. come.

  2263. And we

  2264. pray,

  2265. Lord,

  2266. would sinners

  2267. turn to

  2268. Christ Jesus

  2269. in faith

  2270. and be

  2271. saved.

  2272. And we

  2273. pray,

  2274. Lord,

  2275. that this

  2276. church be

  2277. a beacon

  2278. of gospel

  2279. hope to

  2280. the lost

  2281. and dying

  2282. around us.

  2283. We pray

  2284. this in

  2285. Jesus'

  2286. name.

  2287. Amen.
