  1. Well, we're continuing our series through the book of Genesis this morning, and we've come to Genesis chapter 21.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  2. And so if you would, please take your Bibles, open them up to Genesis chapter 21.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  3. If you don't have a copy of God's Word with you, that's okay.

  4. We have them nearby in a seat back in front of you somewhere nearby.

  5. You should be able to find a Bible.

  6. And I would encourage you to actually have a copy of God's Word open as we walk through this together this morning.

  7. So Genesis chapter 21, and when you've found it, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  8. The Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised.

  9. And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him.

  10. Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac.

  11. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

  12. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

  13. And Sarah said, God has made laughter for me.

  14. Everyone who hears will laugh over me.

  15. And she said, Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children?

  16. Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.

  17. And the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.

  18. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, laughing.

  19. So she said to Abraham, Cast out this slave woman with her son.

  20. For the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.

  21. And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son.

  22. But God said to Abraham, Be not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman.

  23. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you.

  24. For through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

  25. And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring.

  26. So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar,

  27. putting it on her shoulder along with the child, and sent her away.

  28. And she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.

  29. When the water and the skin was gone, she put the child under one of the bushes.

  30. Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bow shot,

  31. where she said, Let me not look on the death of the child.

  32. And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept.

  33. And God heard the voice of the boy.

  34. And the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her,

  35. What troubles you, Hagar?

  36. Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.

  37. Up! Lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.

  38. Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water.

  39. And she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

  40. And God was with the boy and he grew up.

  41. He lived in the wilderness and became an expert with the bow.

  42. He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

  43. At that time Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, said to Abraham,

  44. God is with you in all that you do.

  45. Now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my descendants or with my posterity.

  46. But as I have dealt kindly with you, so you will deal with me and with the land where you have sojourned.

  47. And Abraham said, I will swear.

  48. When Abraham reproved Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech's servants had seized, Abimelech said,

  49. I do not know who has done this thing.

  50. You did not tell me, and I have not heard of it until today.

  51. So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant.

  52. Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock apart.

  53. And Abimelech said to Abraham, what is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?

  54. He said, these seven ewe lambs you will take from my hand that this may be a witness for me that I dug this well.

  55. Therefore that place was called Beersheba, because there both of them swore an oath.

  56. So they made a covenant at Beersheba.

  57. Then Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines.

  58. Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God.

  59. And Abraham sojourned many days in the land of the Philistines.

  60. Grass withers, flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  61. Father, we pray once more, Lord, that you would bless the preaching of your word.

  62. Give us ears to hear and to receive the truth.

  63. We pray in Jesus' name.

  64. Amen.

  65. You may be seated.

  66. One thing I've noticed is when moms get together, especially new moms,

  67. they love to swap birth stories.

  68. All the details of the birth stories, good and bad, what went right, what went wrong,

  69. how long it took, when the water broke, had you made it there, had you not.

  70. Did you get the epidural?

  71. Did you go all natural?

  72. Was the baby early?

  73. Was the baby late?

  74. They like to talk about this, and for good reason, right?

  75. Having a child is a major milestone in anyone's life.

  76. They have waited at a minimum nine months for this child to arrive,

  77. although for most mothers they've waited and longed for and prayed for this child much longer than that.

  78. And on top of that, it is just a miracle of God that God forms a life,

  79. prepares it when mother and father come together, forms a life,

  80. and then at long last eventually brings that life out into the world.

  81. It's a miracle.

  82. Our passage this morning here in Genesis chapter 21 is the story of a long-awaited, miraculous birth.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  83. And we get to hear the story here of the birth of Isaac.

  84. And we get to see the kind of messy family that he's born into.

  85. All of this family drama just kind of happens right away.

  86. And we've been waiting and waiting a long time for this promise to be kept.

  87. And finally, at long last, the child of promise has come.

  88. But, you know, as I read this story this week, it was interesting to me.

  89. I wonder if you noticed the emphasis in this chapter.

  90. What was emphasized here in this birth story is not us.

  91. It's not Abraham.

  92. And it's not even Isaac, this long-awaited child of promise.

  93. You would think that he would get a little bit more page time, wouldn't you?

  94. But he's not getting the attention you might think.

  95. We finally get this long-awaited birth of this promised child.

  96. And then we're off to a story about Ishmael.

  97. And then we're off to this story about Abraham and Abimelech.

  98. I mean, what do we do with that?

  99. How does that fit in with this chapter?

  100. Here's what I want us to see and what I think ties this whole thing together this morning.

  101. But the emphasis here in this passage is on the Lord.

  102. And the main character here in this story is God.

  103. His power in the birth of this promised child.

  104. His provision and his protection of Ishmael.

  105. His plan and his purposes for redemption as we zoom out to the big picture behind this passage.

  106. And then his continued faithfulness to all of his promises.

  107. God is the hero of the story.

  108. So let's take a look here.

  109. And we'll see this in four ways this morning.

  110. This will be our outline if you're taking notes.

  111. The four ways God is emphasized here in Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  112. First, we see God's power here in the birth of Isaac.

  113. God's power here in verses 1 through 7.

  114. Look there with me to verse 1.

  115. And don't lose sight of the buildup to this moment, okay?

  116. Abraham has been waiting over 25 years now since God first promised him the birth of a child.

  117. Over 25 years of delay.

  118. And now finally, at long last, the child has come.

  119. You remember God called this pagan man out of his hometown.

  120. He made promises to him.

  121. Promises of land.

  122. The land of Canaan.

  123. The promises of offspring.

  124. This old, barren man.

  125. God told him it would be the father of a multitude more numerous than the stars of the sky.

  126. And we've been waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting for this moment when this promise would finally come to pass.

  127. And now, at long last, here it is.

  128. Verse 1 says,

  129. The Lord visited Sarah as he had said.

  130. The Lord did to Sarah as he had promised.

  131. Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age.

  132. At the time of which God had spoken to him.

  133. This is a miracle.

  134. And you just think about all the obstacles that God has had to overcome in order to bring this child into the world.

  135. You remember there were threats of famine in the land.

  136. And there were threats of war all around.

  137. There were threats of family strife there with Abraham and Lot.

  138. Not to mention the threats of Abraham's own foolishness.

  139. And Abraham's own faithlessness.

  140. Giving away his wife not once but twice into the hands of other men.

  141. Not to mention the natural obstacles.

  142. Abraham's age.

  143. Sarah's old age.

  144. Sarah's barrenness.

  145. And you remember how many times Abraham tried to work around the promises of God.

  146. How he tried to take matters into his own hands.

  147. Take Eleazar of Damascus.

  148. He said, let him be my heir.

  149. And God said, no.

  150. You will have a son.

  151. How Sarah gave Abraham Hagar and said, have a child with her.

  152. He'll be your heir.

  153. And God said, no.

  154. Your wife Sarah will bear you a son.

  155. I know this looks impossible.

  156. And it is.

  157. Abraham, that's exactly the point.

  158. This whole thing is about God's power.

  159. This whole thing.

  160. God has so orchestrated this birth that it cannot be explained any other way than by a miracle of the power of God.

  161. There is no denying it.

  162. God has accomplished this.

  163. This birth was not just unlikely from a human perspective.

  164. It was impossible from a human perspective.

  165. I mean, you see the emphasis here on God's activity, don't you?

  166. Here in verse 1, it doesn't say Abraham and Sarah conceived a child.

  167. What does it say?

  168. The Lord visited Sarah as he had said.

  169. And the Lord did to Sarah as he promised.

  170. Why does Moses tell the story this way?

  171. Moses tells this story like this to make certain that you and I understand that we see this is not Abraham and Sarah's doing.

  172. This is the work of the power of the Lord.

  173. God Almighty has done what he promised by his power alone.

  174. Church, you know, we ought to tell our story like this.

  175. God's people ought to know more than anybody else in the world that the main actor, the main character in your life,

  176. the main actor in your story, it's not us and what you do and what you can accomplish by your own efforts.

  177. Who is it?

  178. It's the Lord.

  179. Who gets the center stage in your story?

  180. As you talk about your life and your accomplishments, your job, your family, your dreams, your hopes, your past, your future,

  181. who gets center stage?

  182. Is it you?

  183. The Lord Almighty ought to take center stage in your life and in the way you talk about your life.

  184. Here we see Abraham and Sarah.

  185. They've both failed over and over and over again.

  186. They've tried to take matters into their own hands.

  187. But here it seems like they get it, doesn't it?

  188. Isaac is born and what does Abraham do?

  189. Immediately he obeys the word of the Lord.

  190. Verse 3, it says,

  191. Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac, as God had commanded.

  192. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old.

  193. Why?

  194. As God had commanded.

  195. Abraham was 100 years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

  196. And Sarah gets it too, doesn't she?

  197. She understands.

  198. She knows how incredible this birth is.

  199. There's no denying it.

  200. And she says, everybody's going to laugh when I tell this story.

  201. God has given me laughter.

  202. An old woman like me bearing at that.

  203. And there's no way I can possibly get pregnant.

  204. But here am I and here's my son, God.

  205. God has done it by his power alone.

  206. So we see God's power is emphasized here.

  207. Second, we see God's protection and provision here in verses 8 through 21.

  208. And it's interesting how the focus here shifts, isn't it?

  209. Isaac is the child of promise.

  210. Isaac is the one through whom the Savior, Jesus, eventually will come.

  211. Sarah is the chosen mother.

  212. She's the one who bears the seed of promise.

  213. But almost immediately, we shift our attention away from these main characters here to Ishmael and Hagar.

  214. Look there to verse 8.

  215. It says, the child grew and was weaned.

  216. This was usually around age 2, sometimes age 3, but even up to age 5 in this culture.

  217. And they throw a celebration.

  218. A baby boy's growing up.

  219. Abraham's 100.

  220. Maybe he doesn't know how many more celebration milestones he'll get to be around for.

  221. So they throw a celebration here.

  222. Come celebrate with us.

  223. Abraham makes a great feast.

  224. And everybody's eating.

  225. And they're happy.

  226. And they're celebrating.

  227. And then all of a sudden, it's like the record scratches.

  228. And there's a problem here.

  229. Sarah looks over.

  230. And she sees Ishmael.

  231. Except she doesn't even call him Ishmael, does she?

  232. Look at that.

  233. She says, she sees that son of Hagar.

  234. Hagar the Egyptian.

  235. Hagar the Egyptian who had a child with my husband, Abraham.

  236. She looks over and she sees Ishmael laughing.

  237. Now, it's a play on words here.

  238. Isaac means he laughs.

  239. Sarah said God made laughter for her.

  240. You remember how Sarah responded when God promised a child?

  241. She laughed.

  242. But now, the son of the slave woman is laughing.

  243. And Sarah does not think it's funny.

  244. It's clear, I think.

  245. He's not just having a good time and joining in and laughing and enjoying the party.

  246. He is picking at his little brother.

  247. He's mocking him.

  248. This is a laughing at, not a laughing with.

  249. He's laughing at Isaac.

  250. Paul, in the passage that was read earlier this morning in Galatians chapter 4,

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  251. He calls this persecution.

  252. He's picking on his little brother.

  253. And Sarah, we see she goes into mama bear mode, doesn't she?

  254. She goes, she skips right past time out, right past no cake for you.

  255. And she says, she just goes right for the neck.

  256. Cast out this slave woman.

  257. Doesn't even call her by her name.

  258. Cast out this slave woman with her son.

  259. For the son of that slave woman will not be heir with my son Isaac.

  260. You can almost feel the tension through the page, can't you?

  261. I imagine everybody at the party kind of just puts down their forks and they perk up.

  262. There's a problem going on here.

  263. There's some drama happening here at the party.

  264. And here's Abraham caught in the middle.

  265. There's mama and baby over here.

  266. They're mad at mama and baby over here.

  267. And Abraham's like, I don't know what I'm supposed to do.

  268. I just want to throw a party here.

  269. Verse 11 says,

  270. It was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son.

  271. Isaac is the son of promise, yes.

  272. But Ishmael still is Abraham's child.

  273. But, verse 12, God said to Abraham,

  274. Be not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman.

  275. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you.

  276. For through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

  277. This is election.

  278. This is God's choosing of one son, Isaac, over one son, Ishmael.

  279. Ishmael is not in the line of promise.

  280. Isaac is the line of promise.

  281. It's through Isaac that Abraham's offspring will come.

  282. So the blessing of the world will come not through Ishmael,

  283. the product of Abraham's physical effort,

  284. but the blessing of the world will come through Isaac,

  285. Isaac, the work of God alone.

  286. Both are descendants of Abraham physically,

  287. but only one is the true son of Abraham spiritually,

  288. and the heir of the promises made to Abraham.

  289. Paul picks this up in Romans chapter 9

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  290. to explain why not all who are physically Jews are truly Jews.

  291. He says,

  292. Not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel,

  293. and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring.

  294. But, he quotes,

  295. Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

  296. This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God,

  297. but the children of promise are counted as offspring.

  298. We'll come back there.

  299. But even so,

  300. would you just look and notice how God cares for Ishmael?

  301. Our natural thought might be,

  302. Well, if Isaac is the elect one,

  303. then God doesn't really care for Ishmael, right?

  304. Wrong!

  305. Look there to verse 13.

  306. God says he has purposes for Ishmael.

  307. I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman.

  308. Jump forward to chapter 25,

  309. and you see how God blesses Ishmael with many descendants.

  310. He multiplies him and his offspring.

  311. And not only this,

  312. God also protects and provides for Ishmael.

  313. You see this story of this dangerous journey into the desert.

  314. Abraham sends Hagar off with some bread and some water,

  315. and they go to the wilderness of Beersheba,

  316. which if you know anything about this area,

  317. you should know that it is hot and it is dry.

  318. This isn't like forest wilderness.

  319. This is desert wilderness.

  320. And this area of the world,

  321. they're in the desert of Palestine.

  322. And it only gets maybe about 6 to 12 inches of rainwater per year.

  323. And pretty quickly, verse 15,

  324. says they run out of water.

  325. So Hagar puts her child,

  326. who is about 15 years old at this point,

  327. Ishmael is now a teenager,

  328. puts her son under a bush

  329. and goes off about the distance of a bow shot.

  330. Why?

  331. So that she won't have to be there and see her son die.

  332. And as she sits there opposite him,

  333. she just lifts up her voice and she weeps, she cries.

  334. But what happens there?

  335. Verse 17, what happens?

  336. God hears the voice of the boy.

  337. And the angel of the Lord,

  338. he calls to Hagar from heaven and says,

  339. What troubles you, Hagar?

  340. Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.

  341. Up!

  342. Lift up the boy.

  343. Hold him fast with your hand.

  344. I will make him into a great nation.

  345. And God opens their eyes

  346. and she sees a well of water

  347. and she goes and she fills up the water

  348. and she gives Ishmael a drink of the water.

  349. God cares for Hagar.

  350. God provides for her and for Ishmael.

  351. And once again, just as he did before in chapter 16,

  352. God comes and appears as the angel of the Lord.

  353. He comes to her rescue.

  354. He comes and he cares for this outcast,

  355. rejected, castaway nobody.

  356. And it's just an incredible reversal, isn't it?

  357. And within just a few verses,

  358. Ishmael goes from being near the point of death,

  359. they're dying of thirst under a bush,

  360. to now verse 20, he's grown up.

  361. He's got a home there in the wilderness.

  362. He's got some skills with a bow.

  363. He has a wife now from Egypt.

  364. You see this grand reversal in the life of Ishmael.

  365. He's truly blessed.

  366. But church, we ought to zoom out and ask,

  367. well, how in the world did this happen for Ishmael?

  368. God did that.

  369. God pursued him.

  370. God pursued his mother.

  371. God heard their cries.

  372. God provided water to drink.

  373. God had a plan for his future.

  374. But once again, who's the main character of the scene?

  375. It's the Lord.

  376. You know, so often we talk about the work of God for his people,

  377. and that is primary.

  378. Those who have by his grace been included

  379. and brought into this line of promise and blessing,

  380. not by their own doing,

  381. but by Christ's doing,

  382. by grace,

  383. through faith.

  384. But have you ever thought about how much God blesses those

  385. who are outside of the people of God?

  386. Have you ever noticed that Christians aren't the only ones in the world

  387. with food on their plate,

  388. or with families,

  389. or with jobs,

  390. or with houses,

  391. or with vehicles,

  392. or with joy,

  393. and with happiness in their life?

  394. No, the sun shines on the righteous

  395. and on the unrighteous alike.

  396. This is what we call common grace.

  397. God, in his kindness,

  398. he pours out all sorts of blessings

  399. on all people,

  400. even on those who are outside

  401. of his special saving grace.

  402. If you're not a believer,

  403. do you realize that it is God who gives you life?

  404. And do you realize that it is God who gives you breath?

  405. Do you realize that it is God who provides every single blessing in your life?

  406. Do you realize that it is God who gives you a mind to think,

  407. and a voice to speak,

  408. and hands and feet to go and do the work that you do?

  409. Do you realize that it is God who gives you food to eat,

  410. and water to drink?

  411. Do you realize that it is God who sustains your life?

  412. You know, if you're not a believer,

  413. you know the right response to these things?

  414. It is to turn to the Lord

  415. and give him praise for all that he's done for you.

  416. God provides for,

  417. he protects,

  418. and he has purposes

  419. for the believer and the non-believer

  420. alike.

  421. But this raises an important question,

  422. doesn't it?

  423. Which one are you?

  424. Are you like Ishmael,

  425. the product of the flesh,

  426. enjoying God's common grace,

  427. blessings,

  428. receiving good things from the Lord,

  429. but only in this life?

  430. Or are you like Isaac,

  431. a child of promise,

  432. the product of God's work and power alone?

  433. Which one are you?

  434. In other words,

  435. what is your birth story?

  436. And we need to zoom out here for a minute

  437. and see third,

  438. third point this morning,

  439. we need to see God's purpose

  440. behind all of this.

  441. Third,

  442. God's purpose

  443. for all of this.

  444. And here,

  445. I want us to turn to the book of Galatians.

  446. Go ahead and just flip there.

  447. Real quick,

  448. I don't usually make you do this,

  449. but I want you to lay eyes on Galatians chapter 4

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  450. this morning

  451. because the point that Paul is making here

  452. in Galatians chapter 4

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  453. is that these two children,

  454. Isaac on one hand,

  455. Ishmael on the other,

  456. they represent two very different birth stories,

  457. two very different identities,

  458. with two very different destinations,

  459. and everyone in this room

  460. is represented by one or the other.

  461. While you find it,

  462. Galatians chapter 4,

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  463. I'll just recap quickly

  464. what's going on here in Galatians.

  465. There's a big problem in Galatia.

  466. You remember what it is?

  467. They have embraced what Paul calls

  468. a false gospel.

  469. What did we just say?

  470. There is one gospel of Jesus Christ.

  471. One gospel.

  472. It's the good news that sinners,

  473. Jew and Gentile alike,

  474. can be justified,

  475. declared righteous,

  476. by the grace of God,

  477. through faith in Jesus Christ.

  478. It is a simple gospel.

  479. And it sounds almost too good to be true.

  480. It is so simple.

  481. Jesus has done everything needed.

  482. All you must do is repent and believe.

  483. You put your faith in Christ.

  484. It doesn't matter what your track record is

  485. up to this point.

  486. It doesn't matter your birth origin to this point.

  487. It doesn't matter if you're Jew or Gentile,

  488. slave or free.

  489. If you are united to Christ Jesus by faith,

  490. you are received, adopted, justified

  491. before the sight of God.

  492. There is one gospel message,

  493. one way of salvation

  494. for the one people of God,

  495. believing Jew and believing Gentile alike.

  496. There's not two peoples of God.

  497. There's not two ways of salvation.

  498. There are not two ways to be His children.

  499. There is one.

  500. This is the message of Galatians.

  501. Over and over and over and over again,

  502. he just hammers this home.

  503. Chapter 2, verse 16, he says,

  504. a person is not justified by works of the law,

  505. but through faith in Jesus Christ.

  506. Know then, chapter 3, verse 7,

  507. know then that it is those of faith

  508. who are the sons of Abraham.

  509. So, chapter 3, verse 29,

  510. being Jewish physically,

  511. only physically,

  512. does not make you an heir

  513. of any of the promises of God

  514. that He made to Abraham.

  515. Not a single one.

  516. If you are Christ, He says,

  517. then you are Abraham's offspring,

  518. heirs according to promise.

  519. He just so desperately wants them to get this,

  520. that there's one gospel.

  521. Don't turn back to slavery,

  522. to the law.

  523. Don't go back to trying to earn your way to God

  524. by your own effort.

  525. Don't turn back to the flesh.

  526. Just receive God's grace and power

  527. for you in Christ through faith.

  528. So now look to chapter 4.

  529. To help them get this,

  530. He reminds them of the story

  531. of Abraham and Sarah and Hagar

  532. and their two sons, Isaac and Ishmael.

  533. Look there to verse 21.

  534. Galatians chapter 4, verse 21.

    Galatians 4:21

  535. He says,

  536. Tell me, you who desire to be under the law,

  537. do you not listen to the law?

  538. For it is written that Abraham had two sons,

  539. one by a slave woman,

  540. one by a free woman.

  541. But the son of the slave was born

  542. according to the flesh,

  543. while the son of the free woman

  544. was born through promise.

  545. Now this may be interpreted allegorically.

  546. These women are two covenants.

  547. One is from Mount Sinai,

  548. bearing children for slavery.

  549. She is Hagar.

  550. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia.

  551. She corresponds to the present Jerusalem,

  552. for she is in slavery with her children.

  553. But the Jerusalem above is free,

  554. and she is our mother.

  555. Verse 28.

  556. You brothers, like Isaac,

  557. are children of promise.

  558. But just as at that time

  559. he who was born according to the flesh

  560. persecuted him who was born

  561. according to the Spirit,

  562. so also it is now.

  563. But what does the Scripture say?

  564. Cast out the slave woman and her son,

  565. for the son of the slave woman

  566. shall not inherit

  567. with the son of the free woman.

  568. So brothers,

  569. we are not children of the slave,

  570. but of the free woman.

  571. Praise God.

  572. These two children,

  573. two birth stories,

  574. are two paths of salvation.

  575. One theoretical and false,

  576. and one real and glorious.

  577. One is by the flesh,

  578. by works,

  579. by the effort of Abraham.

  580. One is by the sheer grace

  581. and power of God.

  582. One is by the law.

  583. One is in slavery.

  584. One is by the Spirit

  585. and in freedom.

  586. One is by works

  587. and the other is by faith.

  588. Which one are you?

  589. Are you born naturally

  590. of the flesh,

  591. as all of us are,

  592. and are therefore still

  593. under the curse of the law?

  594. Or have you,

  595. by the grace of God,

  596. through faith in Christ,

  597. been born again

  598. of the Spirit?

  599. Are you still under

  600. the old covenant of the law?

  601. Or by His grace,

  602. have you been brought

  603. into the new covenant

  604. of God's grace in Christ?

  605. Which one?

  606. That answer, church,

  607. depends entirely

  608. on your response

  609. to the person and work

  610. of Jesus Christ.

  611. God sent His Son, Jesus,

  612. into the world

  613. to be the all-sufficient Savior

  614. of His people.

  615. You know what I mean

  616. by all-sufficient?

  617. That means He is enough.

  618. You can't add to all-sufficient.

  619. All-sufficient doesn't need

  620. your help.

  621. You can't work towards it.

  622. You can't work your way

  623. into it.

  624. You can't earn it.

  625. You can't improve upon it.

  626. Nothing in your flesh

  627. can bring about

  628. one promise of God

  629. for you in Christ.

  630. It simply must be received

  631. by faith, church.

  632. Have you responded

  633. to Christ by saying,

  634. thank you for giving me

  635. a road map

  636. to be a better person?

  637. Thank you for teaching me

  638. how to improve upon myself

  639. and be a better man.

  640. Thank you for teaching me

  641. how to be a better woman.

  642. That is law.

  643. And it cannot save you.

  644. Or have you responded

  645. by the grace of God

  646. to say, thank you, Christ.

  647. You have done it

  648. by your power,

  649. your work,

  650. your life,

  651. your death,

  652. your resurrection alone.

  653. That is my only hope

  654. and I praise you

  655. that you have done it.

  656. And it's so simple.

  657. It's so simple.

  658. John tells us

  659. in John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  660. that Jesus,

  661. he, Jesus,

  662. came to his own

  663. and his own people

  664. did not receive him.

  665. But to all who did receive him,

  666. who believed in his name,

  667. he gave the right

  668. to become children of God

  669. who were born

  670. not of the will of the flesh

  671. nor of the will of man,

  672. but of God.

  673. Ian DeGuid says

  674. on this passage

  675. that Hagar stands

  676. for those who depend

  677. on their own efforts

  678. to be accepted by God.

  679. They are in bondage

  680. to the law

  681. and their standing

  682. before God

  683. is therefore inevitably

  684. temporary

  685. and precarious.

  686. Sarah,

  687. on the other hand,

  688. stands for those

  689. who are living by faith

  690. on the basis

  691. of the gospel.

  692. such people

  693. are not trusting

  694. in their own righteousness,

  695. but in the righteousness

  696. of Jesus Christ

  697. credited by God

  698. to their account.

  699. They are the children

  700. of promise.

  701. Theirs is a liberty

  702. that Hagar

  703. could never know.

  704. which one are you?

  705. You know,

  706. it may be that

  707. this is all new information

  708. to you, right?

  709. Maybe you hear this

  710. and you thought

  711. that to be a Christian

  712. just meant

  713. I just gotta do better,

  714. clean myself up,

  715. try a little harder,

  716. make God happy with me,

  717. perform a little bit better,

  718. and maybe,

  719. maybe by the grace of God,

  720. this is the first time

  721. that you're seeing

  722. that this whole thing

  723. from beginning to end

  724. is not dependent

  725. on your power.

  726. It is God's power.

  727. It is God's doing.

  728. If that's you,

  729. just let me,

  730. let me just encourage you

  731. before we move on,

  732. respond this morning

  733. by putting your faith

  734. in Christ.

  735. Please come talk with me

  736. or any other member

  737. of this church

  738. about what that means,

  739. what that looks like.

  740. If you have questions,

  741. please come.

  742. So we see the divine plan

  743. behind all of this,

  744. but we still,

  745. we still have this little story

  746. here at the end

  747. to deal with,

  748. don't we?

  749. So let's turn our attention there

  750. to our final point here,

  751. verses 22 through 34,

  752. and here,

  753. fourth,

  754. we see once again,

  755. once again,

  756. fourth,

  757. God's promises.

  758. God's promises.

  759. Look there,

  760. starting in verse 22,

  761. and you may be wondering,

  762. like I was this week,

  763. how in the world

  764. does this story

  765. fit in with everything

  766. we just talked about?

  767. And we go straight

  768. from this birth story

  769. and this family drama

  770. and now to another interaction

  771. with Abraham and Abimelech

  772. and what's going on here?

  773. We just dealt with this

  774. last week in chapter 20,

  775. and I won't spend much time here,

  776. but I just want you

  777. to remember the big picture here,

  778. okay?

  779. Remember?

  780. The big picture here,

  781. it's not about Abraham.

  782. It is not about Isaac.

  783. It is not about Ishmael.

  784. It's not about me.

  785. It's not about you.

  786. The big picture here,

  787. it is all about God

  788. and His faithfulness

  789. to His promises,

  790. okay?

  791. You see that?

  792. Remember the promises

  793. God made to Abraham,

  794. a child and land.

  795. Offspring and the promised land.

  796. Well, we got the offspring now,

  797. finally,

  798. 25 years later.

  799. Despite Abraham's faithlessness,

  800. God remained faithful,

  801. and now we're left wondering,

  802. well, what about the land?

  803. You remember how Abraham

  804. tried to mess that up too,

  805. don't you,

  806. last week?

  807. He made some pretty powerful enemies

  808. last week,

  809. chapter 20.

  810. He almost got a king

  811. and his whole family killed,

  812. but now,

  813. now,

  814. what we see here

  815. is a divine reversal

  816. of circumstance

  817. in Abraham's favor.

  818. Everything that went wrong

  819. in chapter 20

  820. now is going

  821. for Abraham

  822. here in chapter 21.

  823. Look there,

  824. look there to verse 22.

  825. We see,

  826. you see Abimelech

  827. comes to Abraham,

  828. now he's bringing

  829. Phicol,

  830. the commander of his army,

  831. and he says,

  832. God is with you

  833. in all that you do.

  834. He has seen this,

  835. hasn't he?

  836. He's experienced this

  837. firsthand.

  838. You remember,

  839. God spoke to Abimelech

  840. in the dream

  841. because of Abraham.

  842. He's seen enough

  843. to know the power

  844. of Abraham's God,

  845. but he's also seen enough

  846. of Abraham

  847. to know his potential

  848. for deception.

  849. So he makes him promise,

  850. swear to me, Abraham,

  851. that you won't deal

  852. falsely with me.

  853. You better start

  854. being honest with me.

  855. I need to know

  856. I can trust you.

  857. Don't lie again.

  858. I've been kind to you.

  859. You be kind to me.

  860. And Abraham says,

  861. okay, I swear.

  862. Now, this is where

  863. this gets really interesting

  864. to me,

  865. and if I can just have

  866. your permission

  867. to nerd out

  868. for just a minute

  869. on the rest of this passage,

  870. because the rest

  871. of this chapter,

  872. I still haven't figured it out.

  873. But it serves

  874. as a sort of mirror

  875. image of chapter 20.

  876. Just notice this, okay?

  877. Abraham came to Abimelech

  878. in chapter 20.

  879. Now, Abimelech comes

  880. to Abraham in chapter 21.

  881. Abimelech reproved Abraham

  882. for his sin in chapter 20.

  883. But here now,

  884. Abraham is reproving Abimelech

  885. for his sin in 21.

  886. Abraham gave three excuses

  887. for his behavior.

  888. You remember chapter 20?

  889. You don't fear God.

  890. Technically,

  891. she is my sister.

  892. God made me do it.

  893. Now, chapter 21,

  894. we get to hear

  895. Abimelech's three excuses.

  896. I don't know who did it.

  897. You didn't tell me.

  898. I'm just now hearing

  899. about this.

  900. Abimelech sent Abraham away

  901. with material blessings,

  902. cleared his name

  903. in chapter 20.

  904. Now, in 21,

  905. here's Abraham

  906. sending sheep

  907. and oxen to Abimelech

  908. and making sure

  909. everybody knows,

  910. hey, that's my well.

  911. what's going on here?

  912. To tell you the truth,

  913. I don't exactly know.

  914. I tossed this around

  915. and around and around

  916. in my mind this week.

  917. I was laying there

  918. in the tent

  919. just thinking about it

  920. as we went camping

  921. as a church

  922. the other night.

  923. I even went so far

  924. as to reach out

  925. to one of my former professors

  926. who is a,

  927. just a brilliant

  928. Old Testament scholar.

  929. I laid out everything

  930. to him

  931. that I just said to you

  932. that,

  933. Professor,

  934. this looks like

  935. a mirror image

  936. of chapter 20.

  937. Can you help me

  938. think through this, please?

  939. He got back to me

  940. yesterday

  941. and he said,

  942. Jonathan,

  943. I think that you are

  944. on to something here.

  945. That's encouraging.

  946. Perhaps 20 is a mirror

  947. of 21.

  948. Makes sense.

  949. The question then

  950. is for what purpose?

  951. And I'm reading this

  952. like,

  953. yes, exactly.

  954. That's what I want you

  955. to tell me, please.

  956. Help me out.

  957. Tell me what it is.

  958. And then he said,

  959. let me know where you land.

  960. End of email.

  961. Sent from my iPhone.

  962. So church,

  963. I have to keep digging,

  964. but here's my best guess,

  965. okay?

  966. Here's my best guess.

  967. How do you explain

  968. such an incredible reversal?

  969. Did you notice

  970. how Abraham comes out

  971. after this whole exchange?

  972. He leaves now

  973. having made a covenant

  974. with this man

  975. who was once his enemy.

  976. He leaves now

  977. with an ally

  978. in the place of an enemy.

  979. Not only this,

  980. he now has a well

  981. here in the desert.

  982. Not only this,

  983. Abraham now plants a tree.

  984. I mean,

  985. it looks like Abraham

  986. is going to be around here

  987. for a while,

  988. doesn't it?

  989. How do you explain

  990. this great reversal

  991. of circumstance?

  992. The secular explanation

  993. for this would be

  994. good fortune.

  995. Man,

  996. things just turned out

  997. for Abraham,

  998. didn't they?

  999. Abraham really had

  1000. some good luck here.

  1001. Just look how things

1002. just rolled in his favor.

  1003. But we know

1004. this can only be explained

  1005. as a work

  1006. of a good

  1007. and sovereign

  1008. and powerful

  1009. and covenant-keeping God.

  1010. God

  1011. has turned

  1012. this whole thing around

  1013. in Abraham's favor.

  1014. But why?

  1015. For what purpose?

  1016. I think Moses

  1017. wants us to see

  1018. that

  1019. our covenant-keeping

  1020. God

  1021. despite our foolishness

  1022. will be faithful

  1023. to his promises.

  1024. God promised Abraham

  1025. offspring

  1026. despite his foolishness.

  1027. He did it.

  1028. Isaac is here

  1029. and now

  1030. likewise

  1031. God promised Abraham

  1032. this land

  1033. and despite Abraham's foolishness

  1034. God

  1035. will

  1036. make a way

  1037. to turn

  1038. all things

  1039. in his favor

  1040. for his good

  1041. to fulfill

  1042. all

  1043. his promises.

  1044. Believer,

  1045. do you realize

  1046. that this same

  1047. covenant-keeping

  1048. God

  1049. is working for you

  1050. and in you

  1051. with all

  1052. his power

  1053. to bring to pass

  1054. every word

  1055. of every promise

  1056. made to you

  1057. in Christ Jesus

  1058. our Lord.

  1059. God

  1060. do you believe

  1061. that his word

  1062. will

  1063. not fail

  1064. that no obstacle

  1065. whether from the outside

  1066. or from the inside

  1067. whether from the world

1068. or from your own foolishness

  1069. no obstacle

  1070. will stand

  1071. in his way

  1072. all things

  1073. work together

  1074. for good

  1075. for those

  1076. who love him

  1077. and are called

  1078. according to his purpose

  1079. all of this

  1080. from beginning to end

  1081. all of this

  1082. church

  1083. is God's

  1084. work

  1085. for God's

  1086. glory

  1087. it is about

  1088. God

  1089. he is the main

  1090. character of the story

  1091. God is the main

  1092. character

  1093. of your

  1094. life

  1095. life

1096. God is the main reason

  1097. his glory

  1098. is the aim

  1099. of all human history

1100. it is all about him

1101. do you see the world

  1102. this way

  1103. believer

  1104. do you realize

  1105. that your

  1106. new birth

  1107. is the story

  1108. of God

  1109. doing not just

  1110. the unlikely

  1111. but the impossible

  1112. in you

  1113. that God

  1114. has so

  1115. orchestrated

  1116. your new birth

  1117. that it cannot

  1118. be explained

  1119. any other way

  1120. than by a miracle

  1121. of his power

  1122. he alone

  1123. has done it

  1124. he has caused us

  1125. to be born

  1126. again

  1127. and not just

  1128. that

  1129. but to be born

  1130. again

  1131. to a living

  1132. hope

  1133. an inheritance

  1134. we are

  1135. heirs of God

  1136. and fellow

  1137. heirs with Christ

  1138. heirs of all

  1139. the world

  1140. the true

  1141. promised land

  1142. in the age

  1143. to come

  1144. non-believer

  1145. do you realize

  1146. that the blessings

  1147. that you receive

  1148. in this life

  1149. are meant to

  1150. draw you

  1151. to give glory

  1152. to God

  1153. to repent

  1154. of your sin

  1155. to put your faith

  1156. in him

  1157. to honor him

  1158. and give thanks

  1159. to him

  1160. and to glorify him

  1161. as you were made

  1162. to do

  1163. and Christian

  1164. do you realize

  1165. that our

  1166. confidence

  1167. and our

  1168. hope

  1169. of a certain

  1170. future

  1171. in the true

  1172. promised land

  1173. is not

  1174. in our

  1175. work

  1176. is not

  1177. in our

  1178. performance

  1179. is not

  1180. in our

  1181. faithfulness

  1182. to him

  1183. it is in

  1184. his faithfulness

  1185. to himself

  1186. and thereby

  1187. his faithfulness

  1188. to us

  1189. in Christ

  1190. from beginning

  1191. to end

  1192. it is about

  1193. him

  1194. his power

  1195. his faithfulness

  1196. his goodness

  1197. his glory

  1198. now and forever

  1199. amen

  1200. father god

  1201. we praise

  1202. you

  1203. for your

  1204. faithfulness

  1205. to your

  1206. promises

  1207. in Christ

  1208. and lord

  1209. we praise

  1210. you for

  1211. the grace

  1212. that has

  1213. brought

  1214. sinners

  1215. like us

  1216. in

  1217. to this

  1218. line of

  1219. promise

  1220. not by

  1221. our effort

  1222. not by

  1223. our goodness

  1224. but by

  1225. your

  1226. sheer

  1227. grace

  1228. and mercy

  1229. alone

  1230. we praise

  1231. you lord

  1232. for the new

  1233. life you've

  1234. given us

  1235. in christ

  1236. if there

  1237. are any

  1238. who have

  1239. yet to

  1240. receive it

  1241. lord

  1242. would you

  1243. work that

  1244. in them

  1245. this moment

  1246. we pray

  1247. in jesus name

  1248. amen
