  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  2. ! If you don't have a copy of God's Word of your own, you're welcome to use one in the seat back nearby.

  3. If you don't have a copy of God's Word at all, you're welcome to just take one of those home with you.

  4. That's our gift to you. We want you to be able to have and hold and read the Word of God.

  5. So Genesis chapter 22, and when you found that, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word this morning.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  6. After these things, God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham, he said, here I am.

  7. He said, take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains on which I shall tell you.

  8. So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and his son Isaac.

  9. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.

  10. On the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.

  11. Then Abraham said to his young men, stay here with the donkey.

  12. I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.

  13. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac, his son.

  14. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife.

  15. And so they went both of them together.

  16. And Isaac said to his father, Abraham, my father.

  17. And he said, here I am, my son.

  18. He said, behold the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

  19. Abraham said, God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.

  20. So they went both of them together.

  21. When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order

  22. and bound Isaac, his son, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood.

  23. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.

  24. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham.

  25. And he said, here I am.

  26. He said, do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him.

  27. For now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son from me.

  28. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked and behold, behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by his horns.

  29. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

  30. So Abraham called the name of that place, the Lord will provide.

  31. As it is said to this day, on the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.

  32. And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said,

  33. By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,

  34. I will surely bless you and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore.

  35. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies.

  36. And in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed because you have obeyed my voice.

  37. So Abraham returned to his young men and they arose and went together to Beersheba.

  38. And Abraham lived at Beersheba.

  39. Now after these things it was told to Abraham,

  40. Behold, Milcah has also borne children to your brother Nahor,

  41. Uz his firstborn, and Buzz his brother,

  42. Chemuel the father of Aram,

  43. Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaf, and Bethuel.

  44. Bethuel fathered Rebekah.

  45. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother.

  46. Moreover his concubine, whose name was Ruma,

  47. bore Teba, Gaham, Tahash, and Makkah.

  48. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  49. Father, we pray now, again as we open up this text,

  50. as we look to this great example of genuine faith on display.

  51. Lord, would you give us faith in Christ this morning?

  52. We pray in Jesus' name.

  53. Amen.

  54. You may be seated.

  55. Amen.

  56. I got an email in my inbox several weeks ago.

  57. from Ligonier Ministries,

  58. and I opened it up to see what they called,

  59. quote,

  60. the State of Theology Survey 2025.

  61. And in it,

  62. they surveyed over 3,000 Americans

  63. to see,

  64. quote,

  65. what do Americans believe

  66. about God,

  67. the Bible,

  68. and salvation.

  69. And I'll go ahead and tell you,

  70. the results were not pretty.

  71. They gave a statement,

  72. and then you had to respond on a spectrum

  73. from strongly disagree all the way to strongly agree.

  74. And it was clear to me as I looked through these results from this poll

  75. that our culture is incredibly confused about the Christian faith.

  76. It's not just that they're opposed to it.

  77. They don't really even understand what it is.

  78. You can filter the results,

  79. and even those who claimed to be Christians,

  80. evangelical Christians,

  81. the results were concerning.

  82. I'll give you just a few examples.

  83. Okay,

  84. pop quiz for you.

  85. Answer these in your mind.

  86. Statement,

  87. God counts a person as righteous

  88. not because of one's works,

  89. but only because of one's faith in Jesus Christ.

  90. Strongly disagree.

  91. Strongly agree.

  92. We ought to know the answer to this one, right?

  93. The correct answer is yes.

  94. Strongly agree.

  95. We are saved by grace through faith in Christ,

  96. not by works.

  97. And we've seen Abraham believed the Lord,

  98. and it was counted to him as righteousness.

  99. But sadly,

  100. 44% of Americans surveyed either disagreed strongly,

  101. or they just weren't sure.

  102. They were on the fence.

  103. That's highly concerning.

  104. Here's another statement.

  105. God accepts the worship of all religions,

  106. including Christianity,

  107. Judaism,

  108. and Islam.

  109. That's a question of which faith is acceptable,

  110. or does it even matter, right?

  111. Well,

  112. the correct answer,

  113. of course,

  114. would be strongly disagree.

  115. Not any old faith will do.

  116. God accepts worship that is according to his word,

  117. worship in the name of Christ.

  118. But surprisingly,

  119. maybe surprisingly,

  120. almost half of all evangelical Christians polled,

  121. 47%

  122. affirm that statement to be true.

  123. God accepts the worship of all religions.

  124. That is concerning to me.

  125. Here's one more statement.

  126. Religious belief

  127. is not about objective truth.

  128. Okay?

  129. Meaning,

  130. it is subjective.

  131. The reality of what you believe

  132. doesn't really matter.

  133. Your truth is your truth.

  134. My truth is my truth.

  135. Faith can be whatever I want it to be.

  136. And of course,

  137. the correct response to that statement

  138. would be

  139. strongly disagree.

  140. Right?

  141. No.

  142. That is false.

  143. We actually believe

  144. that the things that we preach

  145. and proclaim

  146. and read about

  147. in God's word,

  148. we believe that the gospel

  149. is true.

  150. Amen?

  151. And Paul says,

  152. if it's not,

  153. if Christ is not

  154. risen from the grave,

  155. our faith is futile.

  156. And we're still

  157. in our sins.

  158. Well,

  159. 68% of Americans

  160. and 47%

  161. of evangelical Christians

  162. got

  163. the answer

  164. wrong.

  165. It's clear to me

  166. when we talk about

  167. faith,

  168. church,

  169. we need to clearly define

  170. our terms.

  171. We need to understand

  172. and we need to make sure

  173. everyone else understands

  174. what is real,

  175. genuine,

  176. biblical faith.

  177. Which is why I'm thankful

  178. that we've spent

  179. the past 11 weeks,

  180. now this is week 12,

  181. the past 11 weeks

  182. walking alongside

  183. Abraham,

  184. the man of faith

  185. as Paul calls him.

  186. And we've seen,

  187. yes,

  188. of course,

  189. Abraham has wavered,

  190. he's ebbed,

  191. and he's flowed,

  192. he's been up,

  193. he's been down,

  194. he's not been perfect.

  195. But,

  196. Abraham shows us

  197. what it looks like

  198. to trust in the promises

  199. of God.

  200. And that's what faith is,

  201. by the way.

  202. Faith is,

  203. real,

  204. genuine faith,

  205. is a wholehearted,

  206. battle-tested,

  207. fruit-bearing trust

  208. and reliance

  209. upon the Lord.

  210. And in our passage

  211. this morning,

  212. we get to see

  213. sort of a case study

  214. of what that type of faith

  215. looks like in action.

  216. We see it played out

  217. in Abraham's life

  218. here in Genesis 22.

  219. So,

  220. let's take a look

  221. at the passage

  222. this morning

  223. and what we'll see

  224. is three lessons

  225. in faith

  226. this morning.

  227. This will be our outline

  228. if you're a note-taker,

  229. help you follow along.

  230. Three lessons

  231. in faith

  232. this morning

  233. from Genesis 22.

  234. First,

  235. the first lesson

  236. we see here

  237. is that

  238. genuine faith

  239. will be tested.

  240. genuine faith

  241. will be tested.

  242. Look there to verse 1.

  243. And just,

  244. let's remember

  245. where we are

  246. here in Genesis.

  247. God has promised

  248. Abraham offspring.

  249. He's promised

  250. this miraculous birth.

  251. This promised son,

  252. Isaac,

  253. will come.

  254. And we've waited,

  255. we've waited,

  256. we've waited,

  257. we've waited.

  258. And now,

  259. finally,

  260. some 25 years later,

  261. He is here.

  262. We saw last week.

  263. We ended last time

  264. on this absolute

  265. high note.

  266. Isaac,

  267. the child of promise,

  268. has finally come.

  269. And you might think,

  270. now,

  271. finally,

  272. after all of this,

  273. after everything

  274. that we've been through

  275. to finally get to this point,

  276. now we'll just get to relax.

  277. Abraham can just enjoy life

  278. and live happily ever after,

  279. right?

  280. That's not exactly

  281. what happens,

  282. is it?

  283. Verse 1 says,

  284. after these things,

  285. God tested Abraham.

  286. Take your son,

  287. your only son,

  288. Isaac,

  289. whom you love,

  290. the one that you've been waiting for

  291. for 25 years now,

  292. and take him

  293. and go to the land of Moriah

  294. and offer him there

  295. as a burnt offering

  296. on one of the mountains

  297. of which I shall tell you.

  298. Okay,

  299. just,

  300. just put yourself

  301. in Abraham's shoes

  302. here for a minute.

  303. Can you imagine

  304. the distress

  305. that Abraham is feeling

  306. at this moment?

  307. the Lord

  308. who has promised

  309. to multiply

  310. his offspring,

  311. who has promised

  312. to provide

  313. this miraculous

  314. spiritual birth,

  315. now is telling him,

  316. now Abraham,

  317. it's time to go

  318. and slaughter

  319. this promised child.

  320. Offer him up

  321. as a burnt offering,

  322. which,

  323. as we see in Leviticus,

  324. that means

  325. you take a knife,

  326. you slaughter him,

  327. you lay him there

  328. on the wood

  329. of the altar,

  330. you let the blood

  331. spill out,

  332. you light it all

  333. on fire,

  334. so that sacrifice,

  335. your son,

  336. is totally consumed

  337. by the flame,

  338. so that the smoke

  339. lifts up

  340. and goes up

  341. to the Lord.

  342. Now we see in the law

  343. this was an act

  344. of worship

  345. to the Lord,

  346. but never,

  347. ever,

  348. ever,

  349. in all of the law

  350. does God tell

  351. his people

  352. to offer up

  353. their children

  354. in sacrifice.

  355. The pagans do that,

  356. right?

  357. This is totally,

  358. it seems out of place

  359. for the Lord

  360. to say this.

  361. You can imagine

  362. Abraham's distress.

  363. On one level,

  364. there's this natural

  365. paternal distress,

  366. right?

  367. Parents in the room,

  368. take your son,

  369. take your son,

  370. your beloved son,

  371. the son of your wife,

  372. Sarah,

  373. and kill him.

  374. And parents,

  375. just imagine it,

  376. right?

  377. How would you feel?

  378. The most natural thing

  379. in the world

  380. is for a parent

  381. who want to protect

  382. their child

  383. and to keep them

  384. from harm.

  385. Moms,

  386. I know that you just,

  387. sometimes you stay awake

  388. at night,

  389. laying down,

  390. just worrying

  391. about your kids.

  392. Not because anything's wrong,

  393. but just because

  394. that's what moms do.

  395. And there's nothing

  396. wrong with that.

  397. That is,

  398. I think,

  399. natural.

  400. God's baked that

  401. into your DNA

  402. to want to protect

  403. your children.

  404. But there's also,

  405. there's spiritual,

  406. distress here as well.

  407. Think about it like this.

  408. Why does God call Isaac,

  409. not once,

  410. not twice,

  411. I think it's three times

  412. here in the passage,

  413. why does he call Isaac

  414. Abraham's only son?

  415. Doesn't he have

  416. another kid somewhere?

  417. Didn't we hear

  418. about Ishmael,

  419. Abraham's son,

  420. with Hagar?

  421. It's not his only son,

  422. is it?

  423. Why,

  424. what's so special

  425. about Isaac?

  426. Isaac is the only son

  427. of promise.

  428. Don't you remember?

  429. Isaac is the spiritual

  430. offspring of Abraham,

  431. the one who will be

  432. his heir,

  433. the one God has promised

  434. through whom

  435. all the nations

  436. of the earth

  437. will be blessed.

  438. Ultimately,

  439. he's the one

  440. through whom

  441. the promised

  442. snake crusher

  443. will come,

  444. the promised seed

  445. of the woman

  446. from Genesis 3.15.

  447. The Messiah,

  448. Jesus Christ,

  449. will come through

  450. the line of Isaac.

  451. So on a spiritual level,

  452. you might imagine,

  453. Abraham might be wondering,

  454. God,

  455. what about your promises?

  456. God's promise

  457. of salvation

  458. to the world

  459. is at stake here

  460. in the life of Isaac.

  461. It seems

  462. as if God

  463. is turning his back

  464. on his whole plan

  465. of redemption.

  466. And to Abraham's eyes,

  467. it seems like

  468. the serpent

  469. is going to win.

  470. sin and death

  471. will triumph

  472. if this promised

  473. child dies.

  474. God's promise

  475. dies with him.

  476. How can this be?

  477. You can imagine

  478. the distress

  479. that Abraham

  480. might be feeling.

  481. But as we read this,

  482. Moses clues us in

  483. here to something

  484. important that Abraham

  485. doesn't even know.

  486. Right there in verse 1,

  487. he tells us

  488. all of this

  489. is a test

  490. of Abraham's faith.

  491. God

  492. tested

  493. Abraham.

  494. I wonder

  495. if you have

  496. a category

  497. for that

  498. in your mind.

  499. As you think

  500. about the Lord,

  501. here's a statement,

  502. okay,

  503. strongly disagree,

  504. agree,

  505. strongly agree,

  506. neutral,

  507. here's a statement

  508. for you.

  509. God

  510. will test

  511. the faith

  512. of his people.

  513. Do you agree

  514. or disagree?

  515. If we look

  516. at the scriptures,

  517. an honest answer

  518. would be

  519. strongly agree.

  520. God often

  521. throughout the scriptures,

  522. he tests the faith

  523. and tests

  524. the obedience

  525. of his people.

  526. You might think

  527. of the wilderness

  528. wanderings

  529. in the book

  530. of Exodus,

  531. Exodus chapter 16.

    Exodus 16 chapter mention

  532. God tells Moses,

  533. I'm going

  534. to rain

  535. down bread

  536. from heaven

  537. for you.

  538. The people

  539. shall go out

  540. and gather

  541. a day's portion

  542. every day.

  543. Why?

  544. That I may

  545. test them,

  546. he says,

  547. whether they

  548. will walk

  549. in my law

  550. or not.

  551. Judges chapter 2,

    Judges 2 chapter mention

  552. you go there,

  553. God says he's left

  554. some of the nations

  555. there in the land,

  556. he didn't drive

  557. them out,

  558. in order to test

  559. Israel by them,

  560. he says,

  561. whether they will

  562. walk in the way

  563. of the Lord

  564. as their fathers

  565. did or not.

  566. Strongly agree.

  567. God often

  568. tests the faith

  569. of his people.

  570. And you know,

  571. here's where we

  572. come up against

  573. a common

  574. cultural

  575. misunderstanding

  576. about faith.

  577. Some would

  578. tell you

  579. that faith

  580. is just a

  581. means to

  582. better your

  583. life.

  584. Right?

  585. Have you heard

  586. teaching like this

  587. before?

  588. That faith

  589. really is just

  590. kind of a way

  591. to twist

  592. God's arm

  593. and get him

  594. in your corner.

  595. If you have

  596. enough faith,

  597. then hard things

  598. shouldn't come

  599. into your life.

  600. Right?

  601. If you have

  602. faith,

  603. God ought to

  604. just bless you,

  605. bless you,

  606. bless you.

  607. He wouldn't

  608. do anything

  609. bad to you.

  610. Right?

  611. Some would

  612. even tell you

  613. that if you

  614. just have

  615. enough faith,

  616. you'll be

  617. healthy,

  618. you'll be

  619. wealthy,

  620. you'll be

  621. happy,

  622. you'll be

  623. healed of

  624. sickness,

  625. you'll be

  626. blessed

  627. financially.

  628. Friend,

  629. I hope you

  630. realize by now

  631. that is an

  632. absolute

  633. lie.

  634. God will

  635. never tempt

  636. you.

  637. That's

  638. Satan's job.

  639. But God

  640. will certainly

  641. test you.

  642. God will

  643. never bring a

  644. trial into

  645. your life to

  646. destroy you.

  647. That's Satan's

  648. job.

  649. But God

  650. will certainly

  651. use all

  652. sorts of

  653. trials in

  654. order to

  655. refine you

  656. and to

  657. prove your

  658. faith.

  659. If you say

  660. you have

  661. faith in

  662. Christ and

  663. friend,

  664. you better

  665. prepare.

  666. You can

  667. expect that

  668. faith sometime

  669. or another

  670. to be

  671. tested.

  672. God may

  673. take away

  674. what is

  675. precious to

  676. you in

  677. order to

  678. test you.

  679. God may

  680. put you in

  681. a hard

  682. situation where

  683. you just

  684. can't see the

  685. end of it.

  686. You don't know

  687. a way out.

  688. You're not

  689. sure when

  690. this is going

  691. to end,

  692. how it's

  693. going to

  694. turn out,

  695. in order

  696. to see,

  697. do you

  698. still love

  699. me?

  700. Do you

  701. still cling

  702. to me?

  703. Do you

  704. still obey

  705. me even

  706. without your

  707. health?

  708. Even without

  709. your job

  710. security?

  711. Even without

  712. the approval

  713. of your

  714. family and

  715. your friends?

  716. Even without

  717. your riches?

  718. Even without

  719. your sense of

  720. control over

  721. how things are

  722. going to turn

  723. out in

  724. your life?

  725. God may

  726. remove these

  727. things from

  728. you in

  729. order to

  730. test you.

  731. So Peter

  732. tells us,

  733. do not be

  734. surprised at

  735. the fiery

  736. trial when

  737. it comes

  738. upon you

  739. to test

  740. you,

  741. as though

  742. something

  743. strange were

  744. happening to

  745. you.

  746. But rejoice

  747. insofar as

  748. you share in

  749. Christ's

  750. sufferings,

  751. that you

  752. also may

  753. rejoice and

  754. be glad when

  755. his glory

  756. is revealed.

  757. God will

  758. test your

  759. faith.

  760. The question

  761. is, what

  762. will he

  763. find?

  764. Will he

  765. find a

  766. faith that's

  767. genuine,

  768. that's strengthened

  769. by resistance

  770. training, or

  771. will he find

  772. fair-weather

  773. faith that

  774. only trusts

  775. the Lord

  776. when things

  777. are going

  778. well?

  779. So we

  780. see first

  781. Abraham's

  782. faith is

  783. tested.

  784. Second,

  785. second lesson

  786. here on

  787. faith,

  788. genuine

  789. faith will

  790. be manifested.

  791. Genuine

  792. faith will

  793. be manifested.

  794. There's another

  795. cultural

  796. misunderstanding

  797. about faith,

  798. and here's

  799. what it

  800. is.

  801. Some

  802. would tell

  803. you that

  804. faith is

  805. entirely

  806. private.

  807. This is

  808. a personal

  809. thing.

  810. Don't mess

  811. with my

  812. faith.

  813. That's my

  814. faith.

  815. You can't

  816. call into

  817. question my

  818. faith.

  819. My faith

  820. is invisible.

  821. You can't

  822. see it,

  823. right?

  824. And in

  825. one sense,

  826. yes, that's

  827. correct.

  828. I cannot

  829. see your

  830. faith.

  831. Only God

  832. can see into

  833. your heart

  834. and know

  835. and see

  836. your faith,

  837. but what

  838. the Bible

  839. tells us

  840. is that

  841. that

  842. invisible

  843. faith,

  844. if it is

  845. genuine,

  846. will always

  847. in time

  848. bear visible

  849. external fruit

  850. in your life.

  851. Invisible

  852. faith will

  853. work itself

  854. out in

  855. your life.

  856. It will be

  857. manifested.

  858. manifested.

  859. And we

  860. see that

  861. here in

  862. three key

  863. ways with

  864. Abraham.

  865. Look there

  866. with me

  867. starting in

  868. verse 3.

  869. The first

  870. way that we

  871. see his

  872. faith manifested

  873. here is

  874. in obedience.

  875. We cannot

  876. see Abraham's

  877. faith, but

  878. what can we

  879. see?

  880. We see his

  881. quick,

  882. prompt,

  883. obedient response

  884. to the word

  885. of the Lord.

  886. You know,

  887. we spent some

  888. time thinking

  889. about his

  890. distress,

  891. imagining his

  892. distress, but

  893. really, that's

  894. all we can do.

  895. We can just

  896. imagine it because

  897. the scripture

  898. doesn't let

  899. us know any

  900. of what he's

  901. thinking or

  902. feeling.

  903. It just

  904. simply moves

  905. right to his

  906. response of

  907. obedience,

  908. doesn't it?

  909. God says,

  910. sacrifice your

  911. son.

  912. What does he

  913. do?

  914. Verse 3.

  915. Abraham gets

  916. up early in

  917. the morning.

  918. No delay.

  919. No putting

  920. it off.

  921. He saddles his

  922. donkey.

  923. He takes two

  924. of his young

  925. men.

  926. He takes his

  927. son.

  928. He cuts the

  929. wood.

  930. He goes to

  931. the place of

  932. which God

  933. had told him.

  934. On the third

  935. day, Abraham

  936. looks up.

  937. He sees the

  938. mountain.

  939. He's had three

  940. days.

  941. Now opportunity

  942. to turn back,

  943. but he's not

  944. turning back.

  945. His faith is

  946. manifested outwards

  947. in obedience.

  948. I'll just say it

  949. another way.

  950. Flip it around.

  951. Obedience is the

  952. necessary fruit

  953. of genuine

  954. faith.

  955. James says it

  956. like this in

  957. James chapter 2.

    James 2 chapter mention

  958. Faith without

  959. works is what?

  960. It's dead.

  961. He goes on to say

  962. it's useless.

  963. What's it worth

  964. if it doesn't

  965. work itself out?

  966. What is faith

  967. if you can't see

  968. it in your life?

  969. It's dead.

  970. It's useless.

  971. And then he goes

  972. on.

  973. He says something

  974. kind of confusing

  975. in James chapter 2.

    James 2 chapter mention

  976. I wonder if you've

  977. ever noticed this.

  978. James chapter 2.

    James 2 chapter mention

  979. He talks about

  980. this story.

  981. He says,

  982. Was not Abraham

  983. our father

  984. justified by

  985. works?

  986. When he offered

  987. up his son Isaac

  988. on the altar?

  989. Now, our ears

  990. ought to perk up

  991. a little bit

  992. when we hear that,

  993. right?

  994. What did he just

  995. say?

  996. Was not Abraham

  997. our father

  998. justified by

  999. works?

1000. Hold on just a minute.

  1001. Justified by works?

  1002. Now this is

  1003. Reformation Doctrine

  1004. 101,

  1005. isn't it?

  1006. We are saved

  1007. by grace alone,

  1008. through faith alone,

  1009. in Christ alone,

  1010. according to the

  1011. scriptures alone,

1012. to the glory of God

  1013. alone,

  1014. and maybe the

  1015. reformers never

  1016. read James.

  1017. No, they read

  1018. James.

  1019. James isn't

  1020. telling us that

  1021. Abraham was

  1022. declared righteous

  1023. on the basis

  1024. of his works.

  1025. We know he

  1026. believed and that

  1027. was counted to him

  1028. as righteousness,

  1029. right?

  1030. What he's saying

  1031. is that that

  1032. faith was now

  1033. confirmed and

  1034. demonstrated and

  1035. seen and manifested

  1036. externally in

  1037. works of

  1038. obedience.

  1039. To quote a

  1040. reformer,

  1041. we are saved by

  1042. faith alone,

  1043. but the faith that

  1044. saves is never

  1045. alone.

  1046. In other words,

  1047. it is always

  1048. accompanied by

  1049. the fruit of good

  1050. works.

  1051. Martin Luther

  1052. says,

  1053. we do not become

  1054. righteous by doing

  1055. righteous deeds,

  1056. but having been

  1057. made righteous,

  1058. we do righteous

  1059. deeds.

  1060. The order is

  1061. important here.

  1062. Do you see it?

  1063. His faith is

  1064. manifested in

  1065. obedience.

  1066. We see a second

  1067. way.

  1068. Faith is

  1069. manifested here

  1070. starting in

  1071. verse 5.

  1072. Faith is

  1073. manifested in

  1074. confidence.

  1075. Look there to

  1076. verse 5.

  1077. Abraham,

  1078. he's about to

  1079. head up the

  1080. mountain.

  1081. He talks to

  1082. his young men

  1083. and look what he

  1084. says to them.

  1085. He says,

  1086. stay here with

  1087. the donkey.

  1088. I and the

  1089. boy will go

  1090. over there and

  1091. worship and

  1092. come again to

  1093. you.

  1094. Did you catch

  1095. that?

  1096. Anything seem

  1097. off to you about

  1098. that?

  1099. I and the

  1100. boy will go

  1101. worship.

  1102. We will go,

  1103. we'll go up,

  1104. we'll worship,

  1105. and we will

  1106. return.

  1107. What in the

  1108. world is he

  1109. talking about?

  1110. Is he not

  1111. about to

  1112. slaughter this

  1113. child?

  1114. He's ready

  1115. to go,

  1116. he's got the

  1117. wood,

  1118. he's going to

  1119. the spot,

  1120. he's got the

  1121. fire,

  1122. he's got the

  1123. knife.

  1124. How in the

  1125. world can

  1126. Abraham say,

  1127. we're going to

  1128. go, we're

  1129. going to come

  1130. back?

  1131. This is the

  1132. confidence of

  1133. genuine faith.

  1134. Again, what did

  1135. we read this

  1136. morning from

  1137. Hebrews 11?

  1138. Hebrews 11

  1139. helps us here

  1140. again, doesn't

  1141. it?

  1142. Hebrews 11

    Hebrews 11:17–19

  1143. verses 17

  1144. through 19.

  1145. It says,

  1146. by faith,

  1147. Abraham when

  1148. he was tested

  1149. offered up

  1150. Isaac,

  1151. and he who

  1152. had received

  1153. the promises

  1154. was in the

  1155. act of offering

  1156. up his only

  1157. son, of whom

  1158. it was said,

  1159. through Isaac

  1160. shall your

  1161. offspring be

  1162. named.

  1163. He considered

  1164. that God

  1165. was able

  1166. even to

  1167. raise him

  1168. from the

  1169. dead,

  1170. from which

  1171. figuratively

  1172. speaking, he

  1173. did receive

  1174. him back.

  1175. Abraham knows

  1176. two things

  1177. here, doesn't

  1178. he?

  1179. For one,

  1180. he knows

  1181. God has

  1182. promised that

  1183. Isaac will

  1184. be the

  1185. heir.

  1186. God has

  1187. promised that

  1188. through Isaac

  1189. shall your

  1190. offspring be

  1191. named.

  1192. God's promised

  1193. that.

  1194. He's staked

  1195. everything on

  1196. this.

  1197. God's promised

  1198. blessing to

  1199. the world

  1200. through Isaac.

  1201. God's promised

  1202. ultimately again

  1203. the Messiah

  1204. through Isaac.

  1205. He knows

  1206. God's promise

  1207. and he knows

  1208. now God's

  1209. command.

  1210. Sacrifice

  1211. Isaac.

  1212. He doesn't

  1213. know how those

  1214. two things work

  1215. together.

  1216. How could

  1217. he?

  1218. How can

  1219. he reconcile

  1220. these things

  1221. in his mind?

  1222. He can't.

  1223. He does

  1224. not know

  1225. how this

  1226. is going

  1227. to turn

  1228. out.

  1229. But he

  1230. is confident

  1231. that no matter

  1232. what happens

  1233. up there on

  1234. that hill,

  1235. God will

  1236. not turn

  1237. his back

  1238. on his

  1239. promises.

  1240. He figures

  1241. that even

  1242. if I have

  1243. to go

  1244. through with

  1245. this,

  1246. if necessary,

  1247. God is able

  1248. even to raise

  1249. this child

  1250. from the

  1251. dead.

  1252. God will

  1253. not turn

  1254. his back

  1255. on his

  1256. promises.

  1257. Church,

  1258. this is

  1259. faith.

  1260. And we

  1261. see that

  1262. confidence

  1263. again in

  1264. his conversation

  1265. with Isaac.

  1266. I mean,

  1267. you talk

  1268. about an

  1269. awkward

  1270. moment,

  1271. right?

  1272. The parents

  1273. have an

  1274. awkward

  1275. conversation

  1276. with their

  1277. kids.

  1278. Verse 6

  1279. says,

  1280. Abraham

  1281. takes the

  1282. wood,

  1283. he puts

  1284. it on

  1285. Isaac,

  1286. he takes

  1287. the fire,

  1288. he takes

  1289. the knife,

  1290. and now

  1291. Isaac is

  1292. starting to

  1293. notice

  1294. something's

  1295. a little

  1296. off here,

  1297. something's

  1298. missing.

  1299. He's looking

  1300. around like,

  1301. dad,

  1302. we got

  1303. everything

  1304. we need

  1305. except one

  1306. thing,

  1307. and where's

  1308. the lamb?

  1309. How does

  1310. Abraham respond

  1311. to his son?

  1312. What does

  1313. he say?

  1314. He looks

  1315. at his son

  1316. not knowing

  1317. how far

  1318. he's going

  1319. to have to

  1320. go with

  1321. this,

  1322. still not

  1323. knowing

  1324. exactly how

  1325. this is

  1326. going to

  1327. turn out,

  1328. but in

  1329. confidence,

  1330. in the

  1331. confidence

  1332. of faith,

  1333. he says,

  1334. God will

  1335. provide for

  1336. himself a

  1337. lamb,

  1338. for the

  1339. burnt

  1340. offering

  1341. my son,

  1342. God will

  1343. provide.

  1344. I see

  1345. his faith

  1346. is manifested

  1347. in obedience,

  1348. it's manifested

  1349. in confidence,

  1350. and now a

  1351. third wave

  1352. here,

  1353. we see

  1354. faith is

  1355. manifested

  1356. in

  1357. willingness,

  1358. in willingness,

  1359. you could

  1360. say,

  1361. in readiness.

  1362. Look there

  1363. to verse

  1364. nine.

  1365. And they

  1366. make their

  1367. way up the

  1368. mountain,

  1369. Abraham builds

  1370. the altar,

  1371. he lays

  1372. the wood

  1373. in place,

  1374. he sets

  1375. everything up,

  1376. he takes

  1377. his son,

  1378. he lays

  1379. his son

  1380. there on

  1381. the altar

  1382. on top

  1383. of the

  1384. wood,

  1385. he reaches

  1386. out his

  1387. hand,

  1388. he takes

  1389. the knife

  1390. ready to

  1391. slaughter

  1392. his son,

  1393. and at the

  1394. last moment

  1395. the angel

  1396. of the Lord

  1397. calls to

  1398. him from

  1399. heaven and

  1400. says,

  1401. Abraham,

  1402. Abraham,

  1403. and he

  1404. says,

  1405. here I

  1406. am,

  1407. do not

  1408. lay your

  1409. hand on

  1410. the boy

  1411. or do

  1412. anything to

  1413. him,

  1414. for now I

  1415. know that

  1416. you fear

  1417. God,

  1418. seeing that

  1419. you have

  1420. not withheld

  1421. your son,

  1422. your only

  1423. son,

  1424. from me.

  1425. Of course,

  1426. God is

  1427. omniscient,

  1428. he already

  1429. knew,

  1430. he knows

  1431. everything,

  1432. but now he

  1433. sees Abraham's

  1434. faith manifested

  1435. Abraham's

  1436. faith

  1437. manifested

  1438. in obedience

  1439. and in

  1440. confidence

  1441. and in

  1442. willingness

  1443. now to

  1444. sacrifice

  1445. even that

  1446. which is

  1447. most precious

  1448. to him.

  1449. Christian,

  1450. do you

  1451. have faith

  1452. like this?

  1453. Are you

  1454. genuinely

  1455. willing to

  1456. do anything

  1457. the Lord

  1458. commands you

  1459. to do?

  1460. Let me

  1461. ask it

  1462. another way.

  1463. Is there

  1464. anything in

  1465. your life

  1466. that you

  1467. would not

  1468. be willing

  1469. to offer

  1470. up to

  1471. the Lord?

  1472. Is there

  1473. any part

  1474. of your

  1475. life that

  1476. you just

  1477. want the

  1478. Lord to

  1479. kind of

  1480. stay out

  1481. of?

  1482. Do not

  1483. touch this,

  1484. please.

  1485. God,

  1486. I love

  1487. you,

  1488. but please

  1489. don't mess

  1490. with my

  1491. Sunday

  1492. mornings.

  1493. That's the

  1494. only me

  1495. time I

  1496. get.

  1497. That's

  1498. football,

  1499. that's

  1500. fishing,

  1501. that's

  1502. time off

  1503. work.

  1504. I'll catch

  1505. up on a

  1506. sermon later

  1507. on a

  1508. podcast,

  1509. YouTube,

  1510. whatever it

  1511. is.

  1512. Just don't

  1513. touch my

  1514. weekends,

  1515. God.

  1516. God,

  1517. I love

  1518. you,

  1519. but please

  1520. don't touch

  1521. my money.

  1522. Don't ask

  1523. me to give

  1524. it away.

  1525. Don't touch

  1526. my treasures.

  1527. God,

  1528. I love

  1529. you,

  1530. but please

  1531. don't mess

  1532. with my

  1533. plans for

  1534. my life.

  1535. Don't mess

  1536. with my

  1537. job.

  1538. Don't mess

  1539. with my

  1540. retirement.

  1541. Don't mess

  1542. with my

  1543. plans.

  1544. Don't mess

  1545. with my

  1546. future.

  1547. Friend,

  1548. do you

  1549. realize that

  1550. when you

  1551. put your

  1552. faith in

  1553. Christ and

  1554. follow him,

  1555. that means

  1556. everything is

  1557. on the

  1558. table.

  1559. All the

  1560. chips are

  1561. in.

  1562. And when

  1563. you trust

  1564. Christ by

  1565. faith,

  1566. when you

  1567. put your

  1568. faith in

  1569. Christ,

  1570. you bring

  1571. everything to

  1572. him,

  1573. you lay it

  1574. all at his

  1575. feet,

  1576. and you

  1577. say,

  1578. this is

  1579. yours,

  1580. it's not

  1581. mine.

  1582. You take

  1583. this,

  1584. you do

  1585. what you

  1586. want with

  1587. it,

  1588. everything

  1589. that belongs

  1590. to me

  1591. belongs to

  1592. you first

  1593. and finally

  1594. and ultimately.

  1595. If you give

  1596. it to me,

  1597. it's yours,

  1598. you use it

  1599. as you see

  1600. fit.

  1601. The

  1602. parents,

  1603. do you

  1604. realize that

  1605. includes even

  1606. your children?

  1607. Abraham here

  1608. is willing to

  1609. offer up his

  1610. only son,

  1611. the son whom

  1612. he loves.

  1613. You see how

  1614. that's repeated

  1615. over and

  1616. over?

  1617. Your only

  1618. son.

  1619. Why?

  1620. Because he

  1621. knows ultimately

  1622. this child

  1623. belongs to

  1624. God.

  1625. Parents,

  1626. do you

  1627. realize that

  1628. your children

  1629. ultimately don't

  1630. belong to you,

  1631. they belong to

  1632. the Lord?

  1633. We have

  1634. these dreams

  1635. that we tell

  1636. our kids all

  1637. the time.

  1638. I'm preaching

  1639. to me right

  1640. now.

  1641. We tell our

  1642. kids all the

  1643. time,

  1644. you're going

  1645. to grow

  1646. up and

  1647. be best

  1648. friends,

  1649. we're all

  1650. going to

  1651. still get

  1652. along and

  1653. you're going

  1654. to buy

  1655. the house

  1656. right next

  1657. door and

  1658. we're all

  1659. going to

  1660. live on

  1661. this compound

  1662. and see

  1663. each other

  1664. all the

  1665. time.

  1666. If the

  1667. Lord does

  1668. that,

  1669. praise God.

  1670. There's

  1671. nothing wrong

  1672. with that.

  1673. Are we

  1674. equally okay

  1675. if the

  1676. plan of

  1677. God is

  1678. that your

  1679. child goes

  1680. to be a

  1681. missionary

  1682. in a

  1683. dangerous

  1684. place,

  1685. to risk

  1686. their life

  1687. daily to

  1688. spread the

  1689. gospel?

  1690. South Sudan,

  1691. are you

  1692. okay with

  1693. God not

  1694. following your

  1695. plans?

  1696. Christian,

  1697. do you

  1698. realize that

  1699. everything in

  1700. your life

  1701. is His,

  1702. it is

  1703. offered up

  1704. to Him?

  1705. Paul says

  1706. in Romans

  1707. that you

  1708. yourself are

  1709. to be offered

  1710. up to Him

  1711. as a living

  1712. sacrifice.

  1713. This is

  1714. your spiritual

  1715. act of

  1716. worship,

  1717. He says.

  1718. Your time,

  1719. your money,

  1720. your job,

  1721. your family,

  1722. your home,

  1723. your heart,

  1724. your everything

  1725. is His.

  1726. We gotta

  1727. stop hedging

  1728. our bets.

  1729. And you know,

  1730. anything that

  1731. you're not

  1732. willing to

  1733. offer up to

  1734. Him,

  1735. you know what

  1736. the Bible

  1737. says that

  1738. is?

  1739. It's an

  1740. idol.

  1741. How easy

  1742. would it have

  1743. been for

  1744. Abraham to

  1745. make an

  1746. idol out of

  1747. His precious

  1748. Son?

  1749. You know,

  1750. anywhere that

  1751. your heart

  1752. says,

  1753. I am not

  1754. willing to

  1755. obey the

  1756. word of

  1757. the Lord,

  1758. you can be

  1759. sure that

  1760. there's an

  1761. idol there

  1762. competing with

  1763. God for

  1764. your heart's

  1765. devotion.

  1766. What might

  1767. that be for

  1768. you?

  1769. What are

  1770. you not

  1771. willing to

  1772. offer up to

  1773. the Lord for

  1774. His use?

  1775. Jesus tells us

  1776. in Matthew

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  1777. chapter 10.

  1778. Whoever

  1779. loves father

  1780. or mother

  1781. more than

  1782. me is not

  1783. worthy of

  1784. me.

  1785. Whoever

  1786. loves son

  1787. or daughter

  1788. more than

  1789. me is not

  1790. worthy of

  1791. me.

  1792. Whoever

  1793. does not

  1794. take his

  1795. cross and

  1796. follow me

  1797. is not

  1798. worthy of

  1799. me.

  1800. Are you

  1801. willing?

  1802. So we see

  1803. faith will be

  1804. tested.

  1805. Second, it

  1806. will be

  1807. manifested.

  1808. But third,

  1809. third and

  1810. finally, we

  1811. see here

  1812. genuine

  1813. faith in

  1814. Christ.

  1815. Genuine

  1816. faith in

  1817. all the

  1818. promises of

  1819. God.

  1820. Third, will

  1821. be vindicated.

  1822. One more

  1823. common

  1824. misconception

  1825. about faith

  1826. from those

  1827. who don't

  1828. know the

  1829. Lord.

  1830. They think

  1831. ultimately

  1832. faith is

  1833. pointless.

  1834. At the end

  1835. of the day,

  1836. none of it

  1837. matters.

  1838. You believe

  1839. in something

  1840. if you want,

  1841. if it makes

  1842. you happy

  1843. in this

  1844. life, that's

  1845. fine.

  1846. But ultimately,

  1847. what's the

  1848. point?

  1849. It's not

  1850. really tied

  1851. up to

  1852. anything

  1853. real.

  1854. It's just

  1855. kind of

  1856. fairy tales

  1857. and make

  1858. believe.

  1859. So you

  1860. believe what

  1861. you want,

  1862. but it

  1863. doesn't

  1864. matter.

  1865. But we

  1866. know that

  1867. in the

  1868. end, praise

  1869. God, in

  1870. the end, our

  1871. faith in

  1872. the Lord will

  1873. be vindicated.

  1874. Look there

  1875. to verse

  1876. 13.

  1877. Abraham has

  1878. demonstrated

  1879. faith in

  1880. the Lord,

  1881. and now it

  1882. says Abraham

  1883. lifts up

  1884. his eyes

  1885. and behold,

  1886. behind him

  1887. is a ram

  1888. caught in

  1889. a thicket

  1890. by his

  1891. horns.

  1892. Abraham goes

  1893. and takes

  1894. the ram,

  1895. he offers

  1896. the ram

  1897. up as a

  1898. burnt offering

  1899. instead of

  1900. his son,

  1901. so Abraham

  1902. calls the

  1903. name of

  1904. that place

  1905. the Lord

  1906. will provide.

  1907. It became

  1908. sort of a

  1909. proverb in

  1910. that day,

  1911. on the

  1912. mount of

  1913. the Lord

  1914. shall be

  1915. provided.

  1916. his faith

  1917. in God

  1918. and his

  1919. confidence in

  1920. his promises

  1921. was vindicated

  1922. in this

  1923. moment.

  1924. He was

  1925. right to

  1926. trust in

  1927. the promises

  1928. of the

  1929. Lord.

  1930. His

  1931. obedience and

  1932. his willingness,

  1933. even his

  1934. sacrifice, all

  1935. of it, all

  1936. of it was

  1937. worth it.

  1938. Now I

  1939. don't know,

  1940. we're not

  1941. told what

  1942. those two

  1943. men down at

  1944. the bottom

  1945. of the hill

  1946. thought about

  1947. Abraham,

  1948. right?

  1949. We don't

  1950. know how

  1951. much they

  1952. knew about

  1953. his plan,

  1954. but I

  1955. could imagine

  1956. that if they

  1957. knew what

  1958. he had

  1959. planned,

  1960. they would

  1961. think he

  1962. was absolutely

  1963. crazy to

  1964. say, hey,

  1965. we're going

  1966. up, I'm

  1967. going to

  1968. slaughter him

  1969. and we'll

  1970. be back.

  1971. Right?

  1972. They would

  1973. write him

  1974. off as

  1975. insane.

  1976. No way,

  1977. you're going

  1978. to go offer

  1979. your son as

  1980. a burnt

  1981. offering,

  1982. you're just

  1983. trusting the

  1984. Lord to

  1985. provide,

  1986. you're crazy.

  1987. You realize

  1988. we hear the

  1989. same sort of

  1990. things today.

  1991. as you

  1992. share your

  1993. faith with

  1994. others,

  1995. you really

  1996. think the

  1997. Lord Jesus

  1998. is coming

  1999. back?

  2000. Are you

  2001. serious?

  2002. That's what

  2003. you believe?

  2004. You think

  2005. that something

  2006. that somebody

  2007. did 2,000

  2008. years ago

  2009. has any

  2010. bearing on

  2011. your life

  2012. right now?

  2013. Are you

  2014. serious?

  2015. You're

  2016. crazy.

  2017. We say,

  2018. yes,

  2019. I do.

  2020. So much

  2021. so that I

  2022. would be

  2023. totally lost

  2024. without it.

  2025. I have no

  2026. hope apart

  2027. from what

  2028. Jesus has

  2029. done for

  2030. me.

  2031. All my

  2032. trust is

  2033. in the

  2034. gospel of

  2035. Jesus Christ.

  2036. In fact,

  2037. we see

  2038. such a

  2039. clear picture

  2040. of it here,

  2041. don't we?

  2042. All throughout

  2043. this passage,

  2044. we see a

  2045. picture of

  2046. the gospel.

  2047. Church,

  2048. our faith,

  2049. our trust,

  2050. is that

  2051. Christ Jesus,

  2052. like Abraham,

  2053. was truly

  2054. and totally

  2055. obedient to the

  2056. word of the

  2057. Lord.

  2058. Not just

  2059. once,

  2060. but for an

  2061. entire life,

  2062. he passed

  2063. every test,

  2064. not just for

  2065. a moment,

  2066. but for a

  2067. lifetime,

  2068. a perfect

  2069. record of

  2070. full and

  2071. total obedience

  2072. to the Lord,

  2073. and he

  2074. obeyed in

  2075. our place

  2076. where you

  2077. and I

  2078. have failed.

  2079. Our faith

  2080. is that

  2081. Christ,

  2082. like Isaac,

  2083. was the

  2084. only begotten

  2085. son of the

  2086. father,

  2087. who ascended

  2088. the hill

  2089. with wood

  2090. upon his

  2091. shoulders,

  2092. headed to

  2093. sacrifice.

  2094. While Isaac

  2095. was near to

  2096. death,

  2097. Christ Jesus

  2098. actually,

  2099. truly died.

  2100. And for a

  2101. moment at the

  2102. cross,

  2103. it seemed as

  2104. if the

  2105. salvation of

  2106. the world

  2107. was lost.

  2108. This God

  2109. man is dead.

  2110. The serpent

  2111. has struck

  2112. this promised

  2113. seed of the

  2114. woman.

  2115. The plan

  2116. of salvation

  2117. has failed.

  2118. Praise God,

  2119. like Isaac.

  2120. in a

  2121. truer and

  2122. better way,

  2123. rising from

  2124. the grave,

  2125. Christ crushed

  2126. the serpent's

  2127. head.

  2128. Our faith

  2129. is that

  2130. Christ,

  2131. like the

  2132. ram in

  2133. the bush,

  2134. is the

  2135. substitutionary

  2136. offering

  2137. for the

  2138. sacrifice.

  2139. He is

  2140. the lamb

  2141. who was

  2142. slain from

  2143. before the

  2144. foundations of

  2145. the world.

  2146. We believe

  2147. by faith,

  2148. God sent

  2149. his son

  2150. to die

  2151. in our

  2152. place.

  2153. The gospel,

  2154. our faith,

  2155. is in the

  2156. good news

  2157. that the

  2158. Lord has

  2159. provided a

  2160. substitute

  2161. for us.

  2162. Isaiah 53,

  2163. this is

  2164. around 700

  2165. years before

  2166. Jesus was

  2167. born.

  2168. Isaiah

  2169. prophesied

  2170. this,

  2171. the plan

  2172. of God,

  2173. surely he

  2174. has borne

  2175. our griefs

  2176. and carried

  2177. our sorrows,

  2178. yet we

  2179. esteemed

  2180. him stricken,

  2181. smitten by

  2182. God and

  2183. afflicted.

  2184. But he

  2185. was pierced

  2186. for our

  2187. transgressions.

  2188. He was

  2189. crushed for

  2190. our

  2191. iniquities.

  2192. Upon

  2193. him was

  2194. the chastisement

  2195. that brought

  2196. us peace.

  2197. With his

  2198. wounds,

  2199. we are

  2200. healed.

  2201. All we

  2202. like sheep

  2203. have gone

  2204. astray.

  2205. We have

  2206. turned

  2207. everyone to

  2208. his own

  2209. way and

  2210. the Lord

  2211. has laid

  2212. on him

  2213. the iniquity

  2214. of us

  2215. all.

  2216. Our

  2217. faith is

  2218. that Christ

  2219. is the

  2220. perfect

  2221. substitute

  2222. that we

  2223. need for

  2224. our

  2225. salvation.

  2226. Apart

  2227. from him,

  2228. we are

  2229. lost.

  2230. Abraham

  2231. gets a

  2232. small

  2233. picture of

  2234. this,

  2235. doesn't he?

  2236. He gets

  2237. this foretaste

  2238. of the

  2239. gospel.

  2240. He put

  2241. his faith

  2242. in the

  2243. promises

  2244. of God

  2245. and his

  2246. faith

  2247. at last

  2248. was vindicated.

  2249. He sees

  2250. I was

  2251. right to

  2252. trust in

  2253. the Lord.

  2254. I was

  2255. right to

  2256. believe in

  2257. his promises.

  2258. I was

  2259. right to

  2260. stake

  2261. everything

  2262. on the

  2263. faithfulness

  2264. of God.

  2265. To

  2266. reaffirm

  2267. that in

  2268. his heart,

  2269. the angel

  2270. of the

  2271. Lord,

  2272. once again,

  2273. he doubles

  2274. down again

  2275. on these

  2276. promises.

  2277. By

  2278. myself I

  2279. have sworn,

  2280. declares the

  2281. Lord,

  2282. because you

  2283. have done

  2284. this and

  2285. not

  2286. withheld

  2287. your son,

  2288. your only

  2289. son,

  2290. I will

  2291. surely

  2292. bless

  2293. you.

  2294. I

  2295. will

  2296. surely

  2297. multiply

  2298. your

  2299. offspring

  2300. as the

  2301. stars of

  2302. heaven and

  2303. as the

  2304. sand is

  2305. on the

  2306. seashore.

  2307. And your

  2308. offspring shall

  2309. possess the

  2310. gate of his

  2311. enemies,

  2312. and in

  2313. your

  2314. offspring shall

  2315. all the

  2316. nations of

  2317. the earth

  2318. be blessed,

  2319. because you

  2320. have obeyed

  2321. my voice.

  2322. His faith

  2323. was not

  2324. in vain.

  2325. Christian,

  2326. your faith

  2327. in Christ

  2328. will be

  2329. tested in

  2330. this life.

  2331. But praise

  2332. God,

  2333. one day

  2334. the risen

  2335. Lord Jesus

  2336. will return

  2337. and your

  2338. faith in

  2339. him

  2340. will be

  2341. vindicated.

  2342. It will

  2343. be proven

  2344. to not

  2345. be in

  2346. vain.

  2347. every

  2348. sacrifice

  2349. will be

  2350. worth it.

  2351. Every

  2352. act of

  2353. obedience

  2354. will be

  2355. worth it.

  2356. Every

  2357. offering

  2358. unto the

  2359. Lord in

  2360. this life

  2361. will be

  2362. worth it.

  2363. Every

  2364. test

  2365. will be

  2366. worth it

  2367. to the

  2368. praise of

  2369. his

  2370. glorious

  2371. grace.

  2372. He will

  2373. come and

  2374. we will

  2375. see him

  2376. face to

  2377. face.

  2378. Fran,

  2379. how would

  2380. you describe

  2381. your faith?

  2382. Is it

  2383. strong?

  2384. Is it

  2385. weak?

  2386. Is it

  2387. anchored to

  2388. something real

  2389. or is it

  2390. some just

  2391. loose,

  2392. undefined

  2393. practice that's

  2394. distanced from

  2395. anything real,

  2396. any objective

  2397. truth?

  2398. Is it

  2399. mixed?

  2400. Do you

  2401. trust some

  2402. in yourself

  2403. and some

  2404. in God

  2405. or by

  2406. God's

  2407. grace?

  2408. Do you

  2409. fully trust

  2410. in all the

  2411. promises of

  2412. God for

  2413. you in

  2414. Christ?

  2415. Do you

  2416. trust Christ

  2417. to be your

  2418. perfect

  2419. substitute?

  2420. Do you

  2421. have by

  2422. the grace

  2423. of God

  2424. wholehearted,

  2425. battle-tested,

  2426. fruit-bearing

  2427. trust and

  2428. reliance

  2429. upon the

  2430. Lord?

  2431. If not,

  2432. friend,

  2433. what keeps

  2434. you this

  2435. morning from

  2436. putting your

  2437. faith in

  2438. Christ?

  2439. The State

  2440. of Theology

  2441. survey ended

  2442. with two

  2443. key questions.

  2444. The first,

  2445. do you

  2446. agree

  2447. Jesus'

  2448. death on

  2449. the cross

  2450. is the

  2451. only

  2452. sacrifice

  2453. that could

  2454. remove the

  2455. penalty of

  2456. my sin?

  2457. 37% of

  2458. Americans

  2459. disagreed.

  2460. 22%

  2461. only somewhat

  2462. agreed.

  2463. The final

  2464. question,

  2465. do you

  2466. agree

  2467. only those

  2468. who trust

  2469. in Jesus

  2470. Christ alone

  2471. as their

  2472. Savior receive

  2473. God's free

  2474. gift of

  2475. eternal

  2476. salvation?

  2477. 43%

  2478. said no.

  2479. 22%

  2480. somewhat

  2481. agree.

  2482. I think

  2483. it's clear,

  2484. church,

  2485. we have

  2486. work to

  2487. do,

  2488. not only

  2489. to solidify

  2490. our own

  2491. faith in

  2492. Christ and

  2493. make certain

  2494. of our

  2495. full devotion

  2496. to Him,

  2497. but also

  2498. as we

  2499. proclaim

  2500. this message

  2501. to our

  2502. neighbors,

  2503. family members,

  2504. to our

  2505. co-workers,

  2506. to all

  2507. those near

  2508. and far,

  2509. that we be

  2510. clear on

  2511. what we

  2512. mean when

  2513. we say

  2514. we have

  2515. faith in

  2516. Christ.

  2517. You too

  2518. are called

  2519. to put your

  2520. faith in

  2521. Him.

  2522. Father God,

  2523. would you

  2524. give us

  2525. faith

  2526. like Abraham,

  2527. faith that is

  2528. obedient and

  2529. faith that is

  2530. confident in

  2531. all your

  2532. promises,

  2533. faith that's

  2534. willing and

  2535. ready to

  2536. offer up

  2537. anything and

  2538. everything,

  2539. even that

  2540. which is

  2541. most precious

  2542. to us,

  2543. Lord,

  2544. that we

  2545. would give

  2546. it to

  2547. you,

  2548. knowing,

  2549. Father,

  2550. that you've

  2551. not withheld

  2552. what's most

  2553. precious to

  2554. you.

  2555. As you've

  2556. offered up

  2557. your only

  2558. Son for

  2559. our salvation,

  2560. Lord,

  2561. we pray,

  2562. God,

  2563. that we would

  2564. respond to

  2565. you now by

  2566. worshiping you

  2567. as you deserve.

  2568. We pray in

  2569. Christ's name,

  2570. Amen.
