  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to Genesis chapter 23.

    Genesis 23 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Sarah lived 127 years.

  4. These were the years of the life of Sarah.

  5. And Sarah died at Kiriath Arba, that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan.

  6. And Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.

  7. And Abraham rose up from before his dead and said to the Hittites,

  8. I am a sojourner and a foreigner among you.

  9. Give me property among you for a burying place, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.

  10. The Hittites answered Abraham,

  11. Hear us, my lord.

  12. You are a prince of God among us.

  13. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs.

  14. None of us will withhold from you his tomb to hinder you from burying your dead.

  15. Abraham rose and bowed to the Hittites, the people of the land.

  16. And he said to them,

  17. If you are willing that I should bury my dead out of my sight,

  18. hear me and entreat for me Ephron, the son of Zohar,

  19. that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he owns.

  20. It is at the end of his field.

  21. For the full price let him give it to me in your presence as property or a burying place.

  22. Now Ephron was sitting among the Hittites,

  23. and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the Hittites,

  24. of all who went in at the gate of his city,

  25. Know, my lord, hear me.

  26. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it.

  27. In the sight of the sons of my people, I give it to you.

  28. Bury your dead.

  29. Then Abraham bowed down before the people of the land,

  30. and he said to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land,

  31. But if you will hear me, I give the price of the field.

  32. Accept it from me, that I may bury my dead there.

  33. Ephron answered Abraham,

  34. My lord, listen to me.

  35. A piece of land worth 400 shekels of silver,

  36. what is that between you and me?

  37. Bury your dead.

  38. Abraham listened to Ephron,

  39. and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver that he had named

  40. in the hearing of the Hittites,

  41. 400 shekels of silver,

  42. according to the weight current among the merchants.

  43. So the field of Ephron and Machpelah,

  44. which was to the east of Mamre,

  45. the field with the cave that was in it,

  46. and all the trees that were in the field throughout its whole area,

  47. was made over to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the Hittites,

  48. before all who went in at the gate of his city.

  49. After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife

  50. in the cave of the field of Machpelah,

  51. east of Mamre,

  52. that is, Hebron,

  53. in the land of Canaan.

  54. The field and the cave that is in it

  55. were made over to Abraham as property

  56. for a burying place by the Hittites.

  57. The grass withers,

  58. the flower fades,

  59. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  60. Father, we ask now once more,

  61. would you speak?

  62. Would you teach us?

  63. Would you lead us through the preaching of your word?

  64. Give us ears to hear.

  65. May it land on fertile soil this morning.

  66. We pray in Christ's name.

  67. Amen.

  68. You may be seated.

  69. Christ, the sure and steady anchor

  70. as we face the wave of death.

  71. I was at a wedding several years ago,

  72. and it's always interesting to me

  73. to kind of analyze and see

  74. what sort of scriptures are selected

  75. to be read during the wedding ceremony

  76. and what the vows are

  77. that are pronounced by the husband and the wife.

  78. And in this particular wedding ceremony,

  79. the scripture that was supposed to be read

  80. was from Ruth chapter 1 verse 16,

    Ruth 1:16

  81. which says this,

  82. where you go, I will go.

  83. Where you lodge, I will lodge.

  84. Your people will be my people

  85. and your God will be my God.

  86. Very romantic.

  87. But instead,

  88. the reader mixed it up

  89. and accidentally read the very next verse,

  90. which says this,

  91. where you die, I will die.

  92. And there I will be buried.

  93. It's not quite as romantic, is it?

  94. It was funny.

  95. We laughed about it afterwards.

  96. You know, that's not really the time

  97. that you really want to focus in on death

  98. and being grim.

  99. That's supposed to be a joyful time

  100. celebrating a wedding.

  101. But even so,

  102. it was still appropriate,

  103. I think,

  104. if you think about it.

  105. You know,

  106. most weddings do have reference to death.

  107. And most vows that are pronounced

  108. have this ending at the end of it.

  109. It's till death do us part.

  110. Right?

  111. And there's good biblical reason for that.

  112. For one thing,

  113. biblically speaking,

  114. the promises

  115. and the vows that you make to your spouse,

  116. they end at death.

  117. You are biblically released

  118. from your vows in marriage.

  119. You're free to go marry again

  120. if you so choose.

  121. That applies to everybody except Amanda.

  122. I've told her

  123. she has to remain a widow

  124. if I go first.

  125. But for another reason,

  126. another reason,

  127. perhaps the greatest reason,

  128. is that marriage is meant to be a pointer

  129. to an even greater union, isn't it?

  130. Now, this temporary earthly marriage

  131. is a case study,

  132. is a lesson

  133. in an even greater marriage

  134. in the gospel

  135. between Christ and his church.

  136. Paul tells us in Ephesians 5

  137. that the gospel is pictured,

  138. it's shown forth

  139. in the marriage relationship.

  140. This temporary union

  141. points us to an eternal union.

  142. The joys we experience in marriage

  143. point us to greater joys in Christ.

  144. The grief and the loss

  145. that we might experience

  146. at the death of a spouse,

  147. they're meant to point us

  148. to greater and truer promises

  149. that do not end in death.

  150. Praise God,

  151. his promises to us in Christ

  152. are not till death do us part.

  153. In fact, I think that seems to be

  154. the main idea of our chapter this morning.

  155. It's this,

  156. God's promises to us in Christ

  157. extend beyond the grave.

  158. In our passage this morning,

  159. Abraham has to do

  160. one of the most difficult things

  161. that anyone has to do in this life,

  162. which is deal with the death of a spouse.

  163. And this problem of death,

  164. it looms large here in this passage.

  165. It looms large here in this world

  166. cursed by sin.

  167. But even so,

  168. even in the presence of death,

  169. we see the persistence

  170. of God's promises.

  171. This will be our outline this morning.

  172. If you're taking notes,

  173. it's two parts here.

  174. First, the problem of death.

  175. And second,

  176. the persistence of God's promises.

  177. First,

  178. we see the problem of death.

  179. And we see here in verses one and two.

  180. Look there with me,

  181. starting in verse one.

  182. It says,

  183. Sarah lived 127 years.

  184. These were the years of the life of Sarah.

  185. And Sarah died at Kiriath Arba

  186. in the land of Canaan.

  187. You know,

  188. this continues that sort of cyclical refrain

  189. that we heard all the way back in chapter five.

  190. If you remember,

  191. that was a fun chapter,

  192. wasn't it?

  193. It is a long list of life and death.

  194. Adam lived 930 years,

  195. and he died.

  196. Seth lived 912 years,

  197. and he died.

  198. Enosh lived 905 years,

  199. and he died.

  200. On and on and on it goes.

  201. It was a pretty depressing chapter that week,

  202. if you were here for that.

  203. It's an unavoidable reality

  204. in the world that we live in,

  205. isn't it?

  206. The world in which we live

  207. is cursed with the problem of death.

  208. You know,

  209. apart from the word of the Lord,

  210. you will not really understand why.

  211. You might just think that,

  212. well,

  213. death is just a natural part of life, right?

  214. Well,

  215. you live,

  216. you age,

  217. you die,

  218. the fittest survive,

  219. the longest.

  220. That's just how life works.

  221. Death is a natural part of life,

  222. right?

  223. We who know the word

  224. know better,

  225. don't we?

  226. Death is not natural.

  227. In fact,

  228. death is about the most unnatural thing

  229. that there is.

  230. We are not designed by God to die.

  231. Death is a stranger.

  232. It's an intrusion into God's design.

  233. And we remember why,

  234. don't we?

  235. As we look all the way back

  236. to the beginning

  237. of the book of Genesis,

  238. there's a reason for this thing

  239. called death.

  240. What is it?

  241. Death came into the world

  242. because of what?

  243. Because of sin.

  244. Genesis chapter 2,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  245. God gives Adam and Eve

  246. a command

  247. and a consequence.

  248. Do not eat from the tree

  249. of the knowledge

  250. of good and evil

  251. for consequence

  252. in the day

  253. that you eat of it.

  254. What does he say?

  255. You shall surely die.

  256. Death on a physical level

  257. and death

  258. on a spiritual level

  259. both exist

  260. in the world

  261. because

  262. of sin.

  263. So Paul tells us

  264. in Romans 5

  265. that death came into the world

  266. through one man's sin.

  267. Death spread to all

  268. because all sinned.

  269. He says in chapter 6,

  270. the wages of sin

  271. is death.

  272. We ought to recognize death

  273. for what it is.

  274. It's a terrible enemy.

  275. And it's a constant reminder

  276. for us

  277. of the seriousness

  278. and the widespread nature

  279. of sin.

  280. And it's a universal problem,

  281. isn't it?

  282. Well, this problem,

  283. all people,

  284. all people

  285. come into the world

  286. spiritually dead.

  287. And all people

  288. eventually

  289. will be

  290. physically dead as well.

  291. Who can escape it?

  292. It comes for everybody.

  293. Death is the great equalizer

  294. of all people.

  295. It doesn't really matter

  296. if you're rich

  297. or poor.

  298. Sometimes it doesn't matter

  299. if you're young

  300. or old.

  301. In good health

  302. or not in good health.

  303. Sometimes it seems

  304. random.

  305. It doesn't matter

  306. if you're educated

  307. or uneducated.

  308. If you're important

  309. in the eyes of the world.

  310. If you're unimportant

  311. in the eyes of the world.

  312. All people

  313. are under

  314. this curse

  315. of death.

  316. This is what the writer

  317. of Ecclesiastes

  318. tells us.

  319. He says,

  320. the same event,

  321. death,

  322. happens to the righteous

  323. and the wicked,

  324. to the good

  325. and to the evil,

  326. to the clean,

  327. to the unclean.

  328. And to him

  329. who sacrifices

  330. and him who does

  331. not sacrifice,

  332. as the good one is,

  333. so is the sinner.

  334. And he who swears

  335. is as he who shuns

  336. an oath.

  337. At some point,

  338. death comes

  339. for everybody.

  340. And here,

  341. after 127

  342. good long years,

  343. it is Sarah's time.

  344. Now just think about

  345. how significant

  346. this death is.

  347. John Currid

  348. points out that

  349. this death,

  350. this is the first

  351. death and burial

  352. recorded in Hebrew history.

  353. Now this is a big deal.

  354. Sarah is incredibly

  355. significant,

  356. isn't she?

  357. Abraham gets most

  358. of the attention

  359. most of the time,

  360. but just consider

  361. how important Sarah is.

  362. She's the mother

  363. of the Jewish people.

  364. She is the matriarch here.

  365. She's the mother

  366. of the promised

  367. child Isaac.

  368. She is Abraham's

  369. beloved wife.

  370. And yet,

  371. for all of her significance,

  372. death still finds her.

  373. It's unavoidable,

  374. isn't it?

  375. Now I've referenced

  376. Brian Johnson before.

  377. Maybe you'll remember

  378. that name,

  379. Brian Johnson.

  380. He's now famous

  381. for his attempts

  382. to not die.

  383. He's done everything

  384. to optimize

  385. the years of his life

  386. and to live

  387. as long as he possibly can.

  388. His life is about

  389. not dying.

  390. So he downs

  391. about 54 pills

  392. for breakfast.

  393. He spends about

  394. $2 million a year

  395. avoiding death.

  396. And I'm all for

  397. healthy living,

  398. right?

  399. Eating right,

  400. exercising,

  401. optimizing your life.

  402. That's all well

  403. and good.

  404. But church,

  405. one day we will read

  406. about Brian Johnson's death.

  407. death.

  408. No amount of money,

  409. no amount of effort,

  410. no amount of success,

  411. no amount of prosperity

  412. can ultimately end

  413. the problem of death.

  414. It is universal.

  415. Now if you're depressed,

  416. I want you to know

  417. I do have good news for you.

  418. We'll get there.

  419. Okay?

  420. I promise.

  421. But we need to let

  422. the reality of death

  423. sit here with us

  424. for a minute.

  425. We need to understand

  426. this is a terrible issue

  427. that all people,

  428. everybody in this room,

  429. everybody in this town,

  430. everybody in this world,

  431. we all share this problem

  432. in common.

  433. We're all trying

  434. to avoid it.

  435. And we have to understand

  436. that this curse of death

  437. is real,

  438. it's serious,

  439. it's universal,

  440. it is inevitable.

  441. But we also see here

  442. that it is profoundly sad.

  443. Death is sad,

  444. isn't it?

  445. We've seen the presence

  446. of death already

  447. in Genesis,

  448. but this is really,

  449. this is the first time

  450. we get to just sit

  451. with its impact

  452. for a little bit.

  453. And we see here

  454. in verse 2,

  455. Abraham goes to mourn

  456. !

  457. For Sarah!

  458. To weep!

  459. For her!

  460. I'm confident

  461. every single one of us

  462. can think of a time

  463. when we have grieved

  464. the loss

  465. of a loved one,

  466. a family member,

  467. some of you a spouse,

  468. some of you even a child,

  469. a friend.

  470. We should know

  471. that it is right

  472. to grieve

  473. in the face of death.

  474. It is okay,

  475. even as Christians

  476. who have hope

  477. beyond the grave,

  478. it is good

  479. and right

  480. and appropriate

  481. to understand

  482. the sadness

  483. of death

  484. and to grieve

  485. and mourn

  486. when it comes.

  487. It's right

  488. and appropriate

  489. to do so.

  490. We know Jesus himself

  491. mourned,

  492. he wept

  493. at the tomb of Lazarus,

  494. didn't he?

  495. Christ himself

  496. who knew exactly

  497. what he was about to do

  498. in raising Lazarus

  499. from the dead,

  500. Christ himself

  501. who is himself

  502. the resurrection

  503. and the life,

  504. Jesus felt

  505. and experienced

  506. the sadness

  507. that you and I feel

  508. in the presence

  509. of death.

  510. Jesus stepped

  511. into that experience

  512. and he knows

  513. what it's like

  514. to mourn

  515. in the face

  516. of death.

  517. So we see here

  518. that it's good,

  519. it's right,

  520. it's appropriate

  521. to grieve

  522. in the face of death

  523. but praise God,

  524. here's the good news,

  525. church,

  526. in Christ

  527. we don't grieve

  528. without hope.

  529. Amen?

  530. Yes,

  531. death is a terrible enemy,

  532. yes,

  533. death is a terrible

  534. universal problem,

  535. yes,

  536. death is profoundly

  537. sad

  538. but

  539. we who know

  540. the Lord

  541. we face

  542. death

  543. differently

  544. than those

  545. who don't know

  546. the Lord.

  547. Why?

  548. It's because

  549. we believe

  550. by faith

  551. that God's promises

  552. to us

  553. in Christ

  554. extend

  555. beyond

  556. the grave.

  557. We're going to see this

  558. here in our second point

  559. this morning.

  560. We see the problem

  561. of death

  562. now second.

  563. We see the persistence

  564. of God's promises.

  565. Abraham believes this.

  566. Abraham clearly believes

  567. that God's promises

  568. extend beyond the grave.

  569. We saw that last week,

  570. didn't we?

  571. God commands him

  572. to sacrifice

  573. that which is

  574. most precious

  575. to him,

  576. his beloved son

  577. Isaac.

  578. He is willing

  579. to do so

  580. in obedience

  581. to the command

  582. of the Lord.

  583. Why?

  584. Why?

  585. We saw from

  586. Hebrews 11

  587. he believed

  588. that God

  589. was able

  590. even to raise

  591. him from the dead.

  592. That promise

  593. of God

  594. would not be

  595. nullified

  596. by the presence

  597. of death.

  598. We see that same

  599. faith in the promise

  600. of God

  601. is active

  602. here again

  603. in the rest

  604. of this passage

  605. and his behavior

  606. and what he's doing

  607. here.

  608. It's all rooted

  609. in this belief

  610. God's promises

  611. don't end

  612. at death.

  613. Look there

  614. to verse 3.

  615. Abraham ends

  616. his time of mourning

  617. for Sarah

  618. and now he needs

  619. to bury her.

  620. But that's a problem

  621. isn't it?

  622. Because he doesn't

  623. actually own

  624. any land

  625. here yet.

  626. You remember

  627. God's called him

  628. out of his homeland

  629. to come here

  630. to the promised land.

  631. God has

  632. promised this land

  633. to him

  634. but it's not

  635. actually his yet.

  636. He doesn't own

  637. any of the land

  638. and now he's got

  639. a body on his hands

  640. and he doesn't

  641. know what to do.

  642. He needs to bury it.

  643. So verse 3

  644. Abraham rises up

  645. from before his dead

  646. and he starts speaking.

  647. He says to the Hittites

  648. I am a sojourner

  649. and a foreigner

  650. among you.

  651. Give me property

  652. among you

  653. for a burying place

  654. that I may bury

  655. my dead

  656. out of my sight.

  657. He makes his request

  658. and then he enters

  659. into a little bit

  660. of bargaining here.

  661. And notice how

  662. all of this goes down

  663. at the gates

  664. of the city

  665. in the presence

  666. of all the people.

  667. Did you notice

  668. he kept telling us that?

  669. In the presence

  670. of all the people.

  671. In the presence

  672. of all the people.

  673. In the presence

  674. of all the people.

  675. Why is he doing that?

  676. It's because this is

  677. a legal transaction

  678. that's happening here.

  679. In fact the end

  680. of the passage

  681. there in verses 25

  682. onward

  683. it reads kind of

  684. like a legal document.

  685. The front gate

  686. is basically

  687. the courtroom

  688. of the ancient

  689. near east.

  690. Anything judicial

  691. or official

  692. would be happening

  693. right here

  694. in the presence

  695. of many witnesses.

  696. Abraham's making sure

  697. that everything

  698. that's said here

  699. is formalized

  700. and ratified

  701. is official

  702. is all above board

  703. and there's no

  704. under the table

  705. exchange here.

  706. So the Hittites respond

  707. and they respond

  708. graciously.

  709. Verse 6

  710. They say

  711. hear us my lord

  712. you are a prince

  713. of God among us

  714. bury your dead

  715. wherever you want

  716. and none of us

  717. will withhold from you

  718. their own tomb

  719. to hinder you

  720. from burying your dead.

  721. Take your pick.

  722. So Abram

  723. again bows down

  724. he makes his request

  725. a little bit more specific

  726. he says

  727. if you are willing

  728. that I should bury

  729. my dead

  730. out of my sight

  731. well then

  732. hear me

  733. and entreat for me

  734. Ephron

  735. the son of Zohar

  736. that he may give me

  737. that cave

  738. of Machpelah

  739. which he owns

  740. it's at the end

  741. of his field

  742. and let me pay him

  743. full price

  744. and let him

  745. give it to me

  746. in your presence

  747. as a property

  748. for a burying place.

  749. Verse 10

  750. says Ephron

  751. was there

  752. and he's

  753. listening to this

  754. so he speaks up

  755. again

  756. verse 10

  757. says

  758. in the hearing

  759. of all the Hittites

  760. know my lord

  761. hear me

  762. I'll give it to you

  763. I give you the field

  764. and I give you the cave

  765. that's in the field

  766. in the sight

  767. of all the sons

  768. of the people

  769. let me give it to you

  770. bury your dead

  771. that seems incredibly

  772. generous

  773. doesn't it

  774. Abraham only asked

  775. for the cave

  776. and now Ephron

  777. says

  778. I'll just give you

  779. the field

  780. and the cave

  781. but really

  782. we should

  783. recognize

  784. that

  785. this is a little

  786. bit of posturing

  787. here

  788. this is how

  789. negotiation

  790. was done

  791. here in the ancient

  792. near east

  793. in this culture

  794. they want to appear

  795. to be gracious

  796. and giving

  797. so he says

  798. you can have it

  799. but really

  800. in the back

  801. of his mind

  802. he is fully

  803. expecting

  804. Abraham

  805. to come back

  806. and offer to pay

  807. and in fact

  808. that's exactly

  809. what he does

  810. again he bows

  811. down

  812. and he says

  813. again

  814. quote

  815. in the hearing

  816. of all the people

  817. of the land

  818. let me pay for it

  819. I'll give you the price

  820. whatever it is

  821. and so Ephron

  822. again responds

  823. my lord

  824. listen

  825. really

  826. a little piece

  827. of land

  828. worth

  829. I don't know

  830. exactly

  831. 400 shekels

  832. of silver

  833. what's the big deal

  834. don't worry about it

  835. it sounds

  836. it appears

  837. so gracious

  838. doesn't it

  839. but what's he doing

  840. he's naming

  841. his price

  842. and honestly

  843. the price

  844. is not

  845. good

  846. this is not

  847. a discount

  848. it's like

  849. if he said

  850. a new car

  851. worth

  852. about

  853. 200 grand

  854. what's that

  855. between us

  856. right

  857. but Abraham

  858. he hears him

  859. name the price

  860. he knows

  861. all the witnesses

  862. are all around

  863. they've all heard

  864. him name his price

  865. he doesn't even

  866. haggle at all

  867. he weighs it

  868. all out

  869. exactly what

  870. Ephron named

  871. again in the hearing

  872. of everyone

  873. there at the gate

  874. he pays him

  875. exactly what

  876. he asked

  877. and now

  878. the deal

  879. is done

  880. Abraham is a

  881. proud owner

  882. of a new cave

  883. in the promised land

  884. so now verse 7

  885. the field

  886. of Ephron

  887. the whole field

  888. with the cave in it

  889. all the trees

  890. that were in the field

  891. the whole area

  892. all of this

  893. was made over

  894. to Abraham

  895. as a presence

  896. as a possession

  897. in the presence

  898. of the Hittites

  899. before all

  900. who went in

  901. at the gate

  902. of the city

  903. it isn't much

  904. and it cost him

  905. a fortune

  906. but just think

  907. about the significance

  908. of that transaction

  909. now this

  910. is the

  911. first

  912. official

  913. piece of property

  914. that Abraham

  915. owns

  916. in the promised land

  917. and if you look

  918. ahead

  919. you'll see

  920. it would prove

  921. to be a pretty

  922. good investment

  923. Abraham buries

  924. Sarah here

  925. eventually

  926. Abraham will be

  927. buried here

  928. then Rebecca

  929. will be buried

  930. here

  931. then Leah

  932. will be buried

  933. here

  934. then Jacob

  935. will be buried

  936. here

  937. all here

  938. in this tomb

  939. but I have a question

  940. and maybe you're

  941. wondering the same

  942. thing

  943. right

  944. why did Abraham

  945. go through

  946. all of this

  947. trouble

  948. to bury

  949. Sarah

  950. here

  951. think about

  952. that

  953. for a minute

  954. he

  955. has

  956. a homeland

  957. right

  958. why go

  959. through all

  960. the trouble

  961. to negotiate

  962. with the Hittites

  963. as a foreigner

  964. with no property

  965. to his name

  966. Abraham

  967. his wife

  968. is dead

  969. it seems

  970. like a natural

  971. thing to do

  972. just to pick up

  973. and go back

  974. home

  975. go back

  976. to Ur

  977. of the Chaldeans

  978. go back

  979. to be around

  980. your people

  981. your family

  982. mourn for her

  983. and bury her

  984. there

  985. why is he

  986. so insistent

  987. to buy

  988. a cave

  989. and a field

  990. at such a

  991. large sticker

  992. price

  993. why did he

  994. not turn

  995. back

  996. here's the

  997. answer

  998. Abraham

  999. believes

  1000. in the

  1001. promises

  1002. of God

  1003. you remember

  1004. the promises

  1005. do you remember

  1006. what God

  1007. promised

  1008. Abraham

  1009. God

  1010. promised him

  1011. a child

  1012. promised

  1013. offspring

  1014. not just

  1015. one

  1016. but he

  1017. promised

  1018. a multitude

  1019. of offspring

  1020. more numerous

  1021. than the stars

  1022. of the sky

  1023. more numerous

  1024. than the sand

  1025. on the shore

  1026. now Isaac

  1027. is here

  1028. this proof

  1029. of God's

  1030. faithfulness

  1031. but it's just

  1032. one child

  1033. the fullness

  1034. of the promise

  1035. has yet to come

  1036. in Abraham's life

  1037. he does not

  1038. see the stars

  1039. in the sky

  1040. multitude

  1041. here

  1042. does he

  1043. he doesn't

  1044. see the fullness

  1045. of the fulfillment

  1046. of God's

  1047. promise

  1048. does he

  1049. God

  1050. promised

  1051. Abraham

  1052. land

  1053. the land

  1054. of Canaan

  1055. as far as

  1056. he could see

  1057. from east

  1058. to west

  1059. and north

  1060. and south

  1061. God

  1062. promised him

  1063. this land

  1064. and now

  1065. finally

  1066. he gets

  1067. this little

  1068. sliver

  1069. of fulfillment

  1070. it's not much

  1071. just a cave

  1072. just a field

  1073. just some trees

  1074. but it's something

  1075. he has a piece

  1076. of land

  1077. here in Canaan

  1078. Abraham

  1079. doesn't turn

  1080. back home

  1081. because God

  1082. promised him

  1083. this land

  1084. would be his

  1085. he believes

  1086. him

  1087. more specifically

  1088. Abraham believes

  1089. that these

  1090. promises

  1091. extend

  1092. even

  1093. beyond

  1094. the grave

  1095. think about it

  1096. Abraham's

  1097. going to be dead

  1098. within 40 years

  1099. how easy

  1100. would it have

  1101. been for him

  1102. just to go

  1103. home

  1104. bury his

  1105. wife

  1106. live out

  1107. his years

  1108. around his

  1109. kinsmen

  1110. die in

  1111. peace

  1112. but that

  1113. seems like

  1114. a reasonable

  1115. thing to do

  1116. doesn't it

  1117. it's clear

  1118. to me

  1119. nothing is

  1120. clear to

  1121. Abraham

  1122. he is not

  1123. going to

  1124. get to

  1125. enjoy the

  1126. fullness

  1127. of these

  1128. promises

  1129. in this

  1130. life

  1131. is he

  1132. Abraham

  1133. won't get

  1134. to see

  1135. the multitude

  1136. he won't get

  1137. to enjoy

  1138. life

  1139. in the

  1140. promised

  1141. land

  1142. not now

  1143. but he

  1144. does this

  1145. because he

  1146. believes

  1147. by faith

  1148. that even

  1149. death

  1150. cannot

  1151. nullify

  1152. the promises

  1153. of God

  1154. listen again

  1155. to what

  1156. it says

  1157. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1158. chapter 11

  1159. the passage

  1160. that was read

  1161. this morning

  1162. it says

  1163. by faith

  1164. he

  1165. Abraham

  1166. went to

  1167. live in

  1168. the land

  1169. of promise

  1170. as in a

  1171. foreign land

  1172. living in

  1173. tents

  1174. with Isaac

  1175. and Jacob

  1176. heirs

  1177. with him

  1178. of the

  1179. same

  1180. promise

  1181. why

  1182. verse 10

  1183. for he

  1184. was looking

  1185. forward to

  1186. the city

  1187. that has

  1188. foundations

  1189. whose designer

  1190. and builder

  1191. is God

  1192. is that

  1193. Canaan

  1194. no

  1195. keep reading

  1196. these all

  1197. died in

  1198. faith

  1199. not having

  1200. received the

  1201. things promised

  1202. but having

  1203. seen them

  1204. and greeted

  1205. them from

  1206. afar

  1207. and having

  1208. acknowledged

  1209. that they

  1210. were strangers

  1211. and exiles

  1212. on the earth

  1213. for people

  1214. who speak

  1215. thus

  1216. make it

  1217. clear

  1218. that they

  1219. are seeking

  1220. a homeland

  1221. if they

  1222. had been

  1223. thinking

  1224. of that

  1225. land

  1226. from which

  1227. they had

  1228. gone out

  1229. they would

  1230. have had

  1231. opportunity

  1232. to return

  1233. but as

  1234. it is

  1235. they desire

  1236. a better

  1237. country

  1238. that is

  1239. a heavenly

  1240. one

  1241. therefore

  1242. God

  1243. is not

  1244. ashamed

  1245. to be

  1246. called

  1247. their

  1248. God

  1249. for he

  1250. has

  1251. prepared

  1252. for them

  1253. a city

  1254. church

  1255. Abraham's

  1256. promised

  1257. land

  1258. and

  1259. our

  1260. promised

  1261. land

  1262. is much

  1263. bigger

  1264. much

  1265. better

  1266. much

  1267. more

  1268. glorious

  1269. than

  1270. Canaan

  1271. and here

  1272. he gets

  1273. just the

  1274. smallest

  1275. sliver

  1276. of what

  1277. God

  1278. has in

  1279. store

  1280. for him

  1281. but Abraham

  1282. believed

  1283. by faith

  1284. God's

  1285. promises

  1286. to him

  1287. extend

  1288. even

  1289. beyond

  1290. the grave

  1291. do you

  1292. believe

  1293. that

  1294. do you

  1295. believe

  1296. that God's

  1297. promises

  1298. to you

  1299. do not

  1300. end at

  1301. death

  1302. but will

  1303. blossom

  1304. and multiply

  1305. in ways

  1306. that we

  1307. can hardly

  1308. fathom

  1309. in the

  1310. age to

  1311. come

  1312. do you

  1313. believe

  1314. that

  1315. Abraham

  1316. didn't

  1317. quite

  1318. know

  1319. how

  1320. but by

  1321. faith

  1322. he trusted

  1323. yes

  1324. God's

  1325. promises

  1326. will

  1327. not

  1328. fail

  1329. every

  1330. word

  1331. of the

  1332. Lord

  1333. will

  1334. prove

  1335. true

  1336. he

  1337. will

  1338. accomplish

  1339. all

  1340. that

  1341. he

  1342. promised

  1343. Abraham

  1344. didn't

  1345. clearly

  1346. see

  1347. how

  1348. the

  1349. church

  1350. on

  1351. this

  1352. side

  1353. of

  1354. the

  1355. cross

  1356. we

  1357. do

  1358. where

  1359. do

  1360. we

  1361. look

  1362. for

  1363. assurance

  1364. of

  1365. all

  1366. of

  1367. God's

  1368. promises

  1369. where

  1370. do

  1371. we

  1372. look

  1373. to be

  1374. reminded

  1375. that

  1376. even

  1377. death

  1378. can't

  1379. overcome

  1380. his

  1381. promises

  1382. to

  1383. us

  1384. that

  1385. his

  1386. word

  1387. is

  1388. good

  1389. and

  1390. trustworthy

  1391. and

  1392. true

  1393. no matter

  1394. what's

  1395. gained

  1396. or lost

  1397. in this

  1398. life

  1399. where do

  1400. we

  1401. look

  1402. church

  1403. we

  1404. look

  1405. to

  1406. Christ

  1407. Jesus

  1408. to

  1409. see

  1410. God's

  1411. promises

  1412. extend

  1413. even

  1414. beyond

  1415. the

  1416. grave

  1417. what's

  1418. the

  1419. answer

  1420. to

  1421. the

  1422. problem

  1423. of

  1424. death

  1425. there's

  1426. only

  1427. one

  1428. Christ

  1429. Jesus

  1430. has

  1431. conquered

  1432. sin

  1433. and

  1434. overcome

  1435. the

  1436. grave

  1437. he

  1438. has

  1439. lived

  1440. sinlessly

  1441. the

  1442. only

  1443. person

  1444. not

  1445. to

  1446. earn

  1447. death

  1448. by

  1449. his

  1450. sin

  1451. and

  1452. yet

  1453. he

  1454. died

  1455. in

  1456. our

  1457. place

  1458. and

  1459. rose

  1460. from

  1461. the

  1462. grave

  1463. to

  1464. save

  1465. sinners

  1466. like

  1467. us

  1468. by

  1469. faith

  1470. in

  1471. him

  1472. do

  1473. you

  1474. want

  1475. to

  1476. know

  1477. the

  1478. solution

  1479. to

  1480. the

  1481. problem

  1482. of

  1483. death

  1484. it

  1485. is

  1486. Christ

  1487. Jesus

  1488. the

  1489. Lord

  1490. Christ

  1491. is

  1492. the

  1493. resurrection

  1494. and the

  1495. life

  1496. we know

  1497. that

  1498. God's

  1499. promises

  1500. to

  1501. us

  1502. extend

  1503. beyond

  1504. the

  1505. grave

  1506. because

  1507. Christ

  1508. himself

  1509. is

  1510. living

  1511. proof

  1512. and

  1513. so

  1514. we

  1515. say

  1516. with

  1517. Paul

  1518. in

  1519. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1520. chapter

  1521. 8

  1522. nor

  1523. angels

  1524. nor

  1525. rulers

  1526. nor

  1527. things

  1528. present

  1529. nor

  1530. things

  1531. to

  1532. come

  1533. nor

  1534. height

  1535. nor

  1536. depth

  1537. nor

  1538. anything

  1539. else

  1540. in

  1541. all

  1542. creation

  1543. will be

  1544. able to

  1545. separate us

  1546. from the

  1547. love of

  1548. God

  1549. in

  1550. Christ

  1551. Jesus

  1552. our

  1553. Lord

  1554. Christ

  1555. has

  1556. conquered

  1557. death

  1558. for us

  1559. and

  1560. because of

  1561. this

  1562. we

  1563. we

  1564. get

  1565. to

  1566. look

  1567. forward

  1568. to

  1569. the

  1570. future

  1571. fulfillment

  1572. of

  1573. all

  1574. of

  1575. God's

  1576. promises

  1577. at

  1578. his

  1579. return

  1580. you know

  1581. Christian

  1582. the

  1583. challenge

  1584. for us

  1585. is that

  1586. you and

  1587. I like

  1588. Abraham

  1589. we do

  1590. not

  1591. enjoy

  1592. the

  1593. fullness

  1594. of

  1595. God's

  1596. promises

  1597. to us

  1598. in

  1599. Christ

  1600. not

  1601. yet

  1602. not

  1603. in

  1604. this

  1605. life

  1606. we

  1607. get

  1608. little

  1609. slivers

  1610. of it

  1611. just

  1612. little

  1613. little

  1614. foretaste

  1615. of it

  1616. yes

  1617. we have

  1618. his

  1619. spirit

  1620. in

  1621. full

  1622. measure

  1623. yes

  1624. we are

  1625. sons

  1626. and

  1627. daughters

  1628. of

  1629. God

  1630. right

  1631. now

  1632. yes

  1633. we

  1634. get

  1635. taste

  1636. of

  1637. victory

  1638. over

  1639. sin

  1640. we

  1641. have

  1642. glimmers

  1643. of

  1644. joy

  1645. we

  1646. get

  1647. these

  1648. partial

  1649. pictures

  1650. of

  1651. our

  1652. fellowship

  1653. with

  1654. one

  1655. another

  1656. and

  1657. our

  1658. fellowship

  1659. with

  1660. him

  1661. but

  1662. Christian

  1663. don't

  1664. you

  1665. know

  1666. the

  1667. fullness

  1668. of

  1669. these

  1670. promises

  1671. is

  1672. yet

  1673. to

  1674. come

  1675. don't

  1676. you

  1677. know

  1678. that

  1679. there

  1680. are

  1681. greater

  1682. and

  1683. more

  1684. glorious

  1685. truths

  1686. yet

  1687. to

  1688. be

  1689. fulfilled

  1690. !

  1691. hardly

  1692. begin

  1693. to

  1694. imagine

  1695. in a

  1696. place

  1697. without

  1698. the shroud

  1699. of death

  1700. and the

  1701. weight

  1702. of sin

  1703. when Christ

  1704. returns

  1705. you

  1706. and I

  1707. and all

  1708. who are

  1709. in Christ

  1710. will finally

  1711. and fully

  1712. know the fullness

  1713. of God's promises

  1714. to us

  1715. in him

  1716. don't

  1717. you

  1718. long

  1719. for

  1720. that

  1721. day

  1722. God

  1723. has

  1724. promised

  1725. you

  1726. Christian

  1727. you

  1728. will

  1729. be

  1730. glorified

  1731. in his

  1732. presence

  1733. can you

  1734. imagine

  1735. that

  1736. God

  1737. has

  1738. promised

  1739. you

  1740. Christian

  1741. you

  1742. will

  1743. be

  1744. freed

  1745. completely

  1746. from the

  1747. presence

  1748. of sin

  1749. in your

  1750. life

  1751. can you

  1752. even

  1753. imagine

  1754. God

  1755. has

  1756. promised

  1757. you

  1758. Christian

  1759. death

  1760. will

  1761. be

  1762. no

  1763. more

  1764. grief

  1765. and sadness

  1766. will be

  1767. swallowed

  1768. up

  1769. God

  1770. has

  1771. promised

  1772. you

  1773. eternal

  1774. life

  1775. with

  1776. him

  1777. and

  1778. with

  1779. one

  1780. another

  1781. in a

  1782. multitude

  1783. that no

  1784. one

  1785. could

  1786. count

  1787. more

  1788. numerous

  1789. than

  1790. the

  1791. stars

  1792. in the

  1793. sky

  1794. dwelling

  1795. together

  1796. in the

  1797. true

  1798. promised

  1799. land

  1800. the

  1801. new

  1802. heavens

  1803. the

  1804. new

  1805. earth

  1806. and

  1807. the

  1808. age

  1809. to

  1810. come

  1811. our

  1812. hope

  1813. beyond

  1814. the

  1815. grave

  1816. is

  1817. tied

  1818. up

  1819. with

  1820. a

  1821. king

  1822. who

  1823. conquered

  1824. the

  1825. grave

  1826. as

  1827. long

  1828. as

  1829. he

  1830. lives

  1831. God's

  1832. promises

  1833. to

  1834. us

  1835. live

  1836. with

  1837. him

  1838. this is

  1839. good

  1840. news

  1841. for us

  1842. church

  1843. one day

  1844. we believe

  1845. Christ

  1846. will come

  1847. for his

  1848. bride

  1849. we will

  1850. feast

  1851. with him

  1852. at the

  1853. wedding

  1854. supper

  1855. of the

  1856. lamb

  1857. don't

  1858. you

  1859. long

  1860. to

  1861. be

  1862. there

  1863. and

  1864. we

  1865. will

  1866. enjoy

  1867. the

  1868. fullness

  1869. of

  1870. his

  1871. presence

  1872. with

  1873. us

  1874. for the

  1875. rest

  1876. of

  1877. eternity

  1878. truly

  1879. for us

  1880. to live

  1881. as

  1882. Christ

  1883. to die

  1884. is

  1885. gain

  1886. do

  1887. you

  1888. believe

  1889. that

  1890. I was

  1891. putting

  1892. our

  1893. boys

  1894. to bed

  1895. the other

  1896. night

  1897. and you

  1898. get

  1899. every

  1900. now

  1901. and

  1902. mostly

  1903. it's

  1904. chaos

  1905. right

  1906. every

  1907. now

  1908. and

  1909. then

  1910. you

  1911. get

  1912. these

  1913. sweet

  1914. moments

  1915. sometimes

  1916. at

  1917. bedtime

  1918. I

  1919. was

  1920. competing

  1921. with

  1922. one

  1923. of

  1924. them

  1925. about

  1926. who

  1927. loved

  1928. the

  1929. other

  1930. one

  1931. more

  1932. right

  1933. we

  1934. do

  1935. that

  1936. and

  1937. he

  1938. said

  1939. dad

  1940. I

  1941. will

  1942. love

  1943. you

  1944. even

  1945. when

  1946. you're

  1947. dead

  1948. and I

  1949. was able

  1950. to say

  1951. son

  1952. I'll

  1953. love

  1954. you

  1955. even

  1956. when

  1957. I'm

  1958. dead

  1959. it's

  1960. a promise

  1961. it's

  1962. a promise

  1963. that can

  1964. only

  1965. be kept

  1966. in

  1967. Christ

  1968. the

  1969. power

  1970. of

  1971. the

  1972. resurrected

  1973. Lord

  1974. eternal

  1975. life

  1976. in the

  1977. age

  1978. to

  1979. come

  1980. God's

  1981. promises

  1982. to

  1983. us

  1984. do

  1985. not

  1986. end

  1987. at

  1988. death

  1989. life

  1990. for the

  1991. Christian

  1992. doesn't

  1993. end

  1994. at

  1995. death

  1996. joy

  1997. and

  1998. pleasure

  1999. do

  2000. not

  2001. end

  2002. at

  2003. death

  2004. for

  2005. you

  2006. Christian

  2007. love

  2008. itself

  2009. does

  2010. not

  2011. end

  2012. at

  2013. death

  2014. life

  2015. is

  2016. yet

  2017. to

  2018. come

  2019. do

  2020. you

  2021. have

  2022. certain

  2023. hope

  2024. that

  2025. goes

  2026. even

  2027. beyond

  2028. the

  2029. grave

  2030. and

  2031. if

  2032. not

  2033. friend

  2034. what

  2035. keeps

  2036. you

  2037. from

  2038. repenting

  2039. of

  2040. your

  2041. sin

  2042. and

  2043. putting

  2044. your

  2045. faith

  2046. in

  2047. the

  2048. risen

  2049. Lord

  2050. Christ

  2051. this

  2052. morning

  2053. and

  2054. if

  2055. so

  2056. Christian

  2057. church

  2058. as

  2059. we

  2060. wait

  2061. for

  2062. the

  2063. fullness

  2064. of

  2065. these

  2066. promises

  2067. in

  2068. the

  2069. age

  2070. to

  2071. come

  2072. we

  2073. walk

  2074. now

  2075. by

  2076. faith

  2077. as

  2078. strangers

  2079. and

  2080. sojourners

  2081. in a

  2082. land

  2083. that

  2084. is

  2085. not

  2086. ours

  2087. but

  2088. one

  2089. day

  2090. will

  2091. be

  2092. we

  2093. walk

  2094. by

  2095. faith

  2096. trusting

  2097. in

  2098. the

  2099. eternal

  2100. promises

  2101. of

  2102. God

  2103. clinging

  2104. to

  2105. Christ

  2106. looking

  2107. backwards

  2108. to

  2109. the

  2110. cross

  2111. and

  2112. the

  2113. empty

  2114. tomb

  2115. and

  2116. looking

  2117. forwards

  2118. to

  2119. his

  2120. return

  2121. in

  2122. the

  2123. age

  2124. to

  2125. come

  2126. father

  2127. we

  2128. thank

  2129. you

  2130. that

  2131. your

  2132. promises

  2133. to

  2134. us

  2135. are

  2136. not

  2137. till

  2138. death

  2139. do

  2140. us

  2141. part

  2142. but

  2143. God

  2144. that

  2145. Christ

  2146. has

  2147. truly

  2148. conquered

  2149. the

  2150. grave

  2151. and

  2152. that

  2153. eternal

  2154. life

  2155. is

  2156. available

  2157. to

  2158. us

  2159. who

  2160. believe

  2161. by

  2162. faith

  2163. by

  2164. your

  2165. grace

  2166. Lord

  2167. we

  2168. pray

  2169. would

  2170. you

  2171. fill us

  2172. with

  2173. hope

  2174. and joy
