  1. Well, good morning. God to be here with you guys today. As Jonathan said, my name is Josh Mata. I'm one of the pastors over at First Baptist Church Mount Pleasant.

  2. And my family and I have been here in the area for about a year. So we're still kind of getting adjusted and finding our way.

  3. But it's been really great. We've enjoyed being here and very thankful to get to be here with you all today.

  4. It's been a privilege to get to know Jonathan over the past several months.

  5. And it's encouraging to see the work that the Lord is doing here at Seaweed Bay.

  6. So, again, thank you for allowing me to be here with you all.

  7. Would you please stand as we read God's word together?

  8. This is 1 Corinthians 12, verses 12 through 14.

    1 Corinthians 12:12–14

  9. The Apostle Paul writes to the church in Corinth, and he says,

  10. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.

  11. For in one spirit we were all baptized into one body, Jews or Greeks, slaves or free, and all were made to drink of one spirit.

  12. For the body does not consist of one member, but of many.

  13. And this is the word of the Lord.

  14. You may be seated.

  15. Join your hearts with me for a moment as we ask God for his help.

  16. God, we thank you for your word.

  17. Thank you for this time together that we get to open it and look at what you say to us.

  18. We pray that by your spirit you would draw near and cause us to be strengthened and encouraged,

  19. cause us to be convicted,

  20. and I pray that each one here would see Christ clearly.

  21. We pray these in his name and by your spirit.

  22. Amen.

  23. Well, most Americans are hyper-individualistic.

  24. I'm sure you would all agree.

  25. I know I am.

  26. I am an individualistic person.

  27. It's the culture we live in.

  28. It's the waters that we all swim in.

  29. It's the air we breathe.

  30. It's the air we breathe in America.

  31. And individualism is not always a bad thing.

  32. It often promotes hard work.

  33. It promotes building something from the ground up.

  34. As individuals, God's given us all specific gifts that we can use for his glory

  35. to create art and create music and systems and structures in order to shape our culture

  36. and to use our specific gifts for God's glory and for the good of one another as individuals.

  37. So individualism can be a good thing.

  38. But at the same time, there's great danger in a hyper-individualistic culture.

  39. We often can become too independent.

  40. We can become too self-made, too self-reliant, too self-focused.

  41. And so because this is the culture we live in, there's great danger for the church as well.

  42. For decades now, throughout churches in America, we often say things that promote this idea of individualism.

  43. We say things like, oh, you just have to make Jesus your personal Lord and Savior.

  44. And that's true.

  45. But we say that at the expense of the communal gathering of the body of Christ.

  46. We prioritize our own personal spiritual growth over corporate church growth and holiness.

  47. We treat church membership often as if it's just an optional add-on for kind of the more mature Christians

  48. or it's really the next step you take if you're going to grow in your Christian life.

  49. Or often, if we do become members of local churches, we treat the church as if it's just something else we do, right?

  50. We have our families and we have our kids and their sports and their school and we have our jobs.

  51. And then we kind of have church on the side as well, you know, if we're not doing anything else on the weekend.

  52. So, unfortunately, in addition, many professing Christians in America today view their relationship with church kind of in a consumeristic mindset.

  53. Like we come to church on Sunday as a consumer.

  54. It's where we go to get our spiritual gas tanks filled up.

  55. And when they're filled up, then we go off for the rest of our week and we don't give much thought to the Lord and to his word and to his people.

  56. People.

  57. Often, Americans choose churches because there's a certain thing they like about it.

  58. We like the music at this church, so we're going to go there.

  59. Or we like the preaching at this church, so we're going to go there.

  60. Or, oh, we like the children's program or the youth program over here, so we're going to go here or here so that our children can have the best youth experience in town.

  61. We often treat the church like consumers.

  62. What can I get out of this?

  63. And what's the problem with viewing the church this way?

  64. The problem is it's nowhere to be found in Scripture.

  65. God has a lot to say in his word about the church.

  66. And so we want to look to his word to hear what he has to say about his church and how we are to live our lives together in local churches.

  67. And so this is what I want to communicate this morning with you all as we look to God's word.

  68. I want us to compare the way we think about church with the way God's word tells us to think about church and see where we need to rely in our thinking and our actions.

  69. And so the title of today's sermon is, what is a church member?

  70. Jonathan asked me if I would preach on church membership this morning.

  71. And so if you don't like this, you know, this idea, you can yell at Jonathan, not me.

  72. It was his idea.

  73. So, but if Jonathan's been doing a good job, which I think he has in his membership classes and in leading you all well, I think a lot of this might be review for many of you.

  74. And so let's think biblically together about what is a church member.

  75. Number one, for you note takers, number one, a church member is someone who is born again and baptized.

  76. A church member is someone who is born again and baptized.

  77. It's pretty self-explanatory, right?

  78. The church, Christ's church is made up of Christians.

  79. It's made up of Christians.

  80. And what is a Christian?

  81. A Christian is someone who's responded to the gospel.

  82. A Christian is someone who's repented of their sin, turned away from it, and trusted in Christ for salvation.

  83. That's what, that's who a Christian is.

  84. Christ came to call sinners to repentance.

  85. Christ came and died on the cross, was buried.

  86. Three days later, rose again, came back to life, conquering sin and death.

  87. And his call is for all of us to repent of our sin and trust in him for salvation in order to reconcile us to God.

  88. So if you've never done that, if you've never turned from your sin, repented of it, and trusted in Christ for salvation, I urge you this morning, do so.

  89. If you don't know how to do that or what that means to be saved, to give your life to Christ, talk to Jonathan, talk to Treg, talk to me, talk to a Christian friend who knows you.

  90. We'd love to help you understand what it means to follow Christ.

  91. And so that's the first step in being a church member.

  92. It's being a Christian, following Christ, giving him your allegiance.

  93. Next, a church member is someone who is baptized.

  94. So born again, becomes a Christian, and then is baptized.

  95. When the early church was forming in Acts 2, shortly after Christ had ascended into heaven, the apostle Peter is preaching to people in Jerusalem, and he tells his hearers, repent and be baptized.

  96. Be baptized.

  97. So baptism, we could say, is like the front door into the church.

  98. If the church is a building or if the church is like a house, to get into the house, you've got to go through the front door, right?

  99. And so baptism is like the front door into the church family.

  100. And baptism is how a new Christian identifies with Christ and his church.

  101. And so when we're saved, when God saves us, he reconciles us to him, right?

  102. But he also reconciles us to one another.

  103. And so when we're baptized, we're reconciled, we're identifying with Christ, and we're identifying with Christ's family, the church.

  104. And so baptism is sort of like how a person says, I'm on that team.

  105. I'm on Christ's team.

  106. I'm with him and with the church.

  107. It's like you're putting on the team jersey.

  108. You're saying Christ is my Lord and his people are my people.

  109. And when baptism happens, there's actually two parties speaking.

  110. It's the individual saying, I'm trusting Christ.

  111. And it's the church saying, we see it.

  112. We agree.

  113. Yes, you are trusting Christ.

  114. Therefore, we are giving you the ordinance of baptism.

  115. And so it's essential that we, to the best of our ability, make sure that those who are joining the church, those who we are welcoming into membership, are actually converted by God.

  116. It might sound crazy.

  117. It might sound simple.

  118. But unfortunately, again, churches all over the West have not done a great job of this.

  119. And therefore, we've seen a lot of bad fruit in churches.

  120. And so that's why here at Seaweed Bay and at the church I'm serving at, at First Baptist, we do what we call membership interviews, where we want to hear from those who are wanting to join the church.

  121. We want to hear a clear understanding of the gospel.

  122. It doesn't have to be, you know, like a, you know, a presentation that maybe a seminary professor would give.

  123. Just a simple understanding of the gospel.

  124. Who is Jesus?

  125. What did he do?

  126. How are we saved?

  127. And then a credible profession of faith.

  128. We want to hear that you actually are trusting in Christ, that he has actually saved you.

  129. Because unfortunately, I'm sure you all know, and I know I do, and we know many people, friends and family members who are confessing to be Christians, yet their lives don't look anything like the life of a Christian should look.

  130. I have family members that live that way.

  131. They say they're Christians, yet they don't seem to care about God.

  132. They don't seem to want to grow in his word.

  133. They don't want to obey him.

  134. They don't gather regularly with the church.

  135. And this is really a trend all over our country.

  136. Their lives don't match their professions.

  137. Yet they think they're Christians.

  138. And many of them think they're Christians because churches along the way have unfortunately taught them that to be a Christian, all you have to do is pray a prayer.

  139. All you have to do is walk down the aisle and sign a card and say, yep, I'm a Christian, and then you're good.

  140. Get baptized maybe, and then go on and live your life however you want to live.

  141. It doesn't really matter if you're fighting sin.

  142. It doesn't really matter if you join yourself to a local church.

  143. You just got to pray this prayer, and presto, you're a Christian.

  144. This dangerous idea has been identified by pastors and theologians as easy-believe-ism.

  145. I don't know if you've heard that term before, easy-believe-ism.

  146. It's easy.

  147. Just pray this prayer, and you're a Christian.

  148. And like I said, this has produced a lot of bad fruit in churches around America.

  149. So this is, in part, one reason why it's so important that we take church membership seriously.

  150. It's because people's souls are at stake.

  151. We don't have time to play around with the souls of men and women.

  152. And so, a church member is someone first who's truly born again, baptized,

  153. but then remember, a believer, a Christian, is not someone who's just baptized

  154. and then left alone to kind of be over here on the side

  155. and figure out this Christian life by themselves.

  156. No, a new Christian is baptized into a family.

  157. There's no orphans in the family of God.

  158. You're baptized into a family.

  159. You're added to a body, and that body is called the church.

  160. And so, number two, number two, a church member is part of a local body.

  161. A church member is part of a local body.

  162. Look with me at Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  163. If you have your Bibles, turn there.

  164. We're going to go.

  165. We were in 1 Corinthians, and we're going to come back to 1 Corinthians,

  166. but go to Acts 2, and we're going to read this together.

  167. This is as the early church was forming.

  168. The apostle Peter is preaching in Jerusalem.

  169. Acts 2, verse 37 is where we're going to be,

    Acts 2:37

  170. and I'll read 37 and 38, and then we'll jump ahead a little bit.

  171. So, Acts 2, 37.

  172. Peter, again, he's preaching to these people.

  173. Now, when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles,

  174. Brothers, what shall we do?

  175. And Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized, every one of you,

  176. in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins,

  177. and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  178. And then down to verse 41.

  179. So those who received his word were baptized,

  180. and there were added that day about 3,000 souls,

  181. and they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship

  182. and to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

  183. And so these new Christians, they hear the gospel,

  184. they repent and believe, and then they're baptized,

  185. and then notice what they don't do.

  186. They don't all just go home and have a quiet time in their own bedrooms

  187. and close the door and just,

  188. Okay, I'm a Christian now.

  189. It's just me and Jesus.

  190. That's not what they do.

  191. What do these early Christians do?

  192. It says they were baptized,

  193. and then they were added to the number that day.

  194. So they were added to a group that must have been established,

  195. a group where these people knew,

  196. here's the group of Christians.

  197. Everyone else is not in this group.

  198. Here's this group.

  199. These new Christians are added to this group,

  200. and then they do something.

  201. They devote themselves to the preaching, the teaching, and the fellowship.

  202. Sounds like church membership to me.

  203. And so we see this idea of church membership here in the early church in Acts 2.

  204. They were added to a group of people in this local church.

  205. Imagine you're driving down Highway 17 after you leave here,

  206. and you're driving along,

  207. and you look kind of further down the road,

  208. and you see something that looks kind of gross.

  209. You're like, Oh, man, what is that?

  210. Is that roadkill?

  211. I can't tell.

  212. You get closer and closer,

  213. and you come upon it,

  214. and you notice it's actually a severed human leg on the ground.

  215. What do you do?

  216. Do you just keep driving?

  217. Oh, whatever.

  218. It's nothing.

  219. We're in Allendah.

  220. Anything goes out here.

  221. Human leg on the ground.

  222. No.

  223. Nobody would do that.

  224. You'd be crazy to do that.

  225. What do you do if you see a severed leg on the ground?

  226. You pull over.

  227. You stop.

  228. You look around.

  229. Where's the body?

  230. This leg has to be attached to a body.

  231. This is not okay.

  232. You're calling the police.

  233. You're calling your husband or your wife.

  234. There's a human leg on the side of the road.

  235. This is not okay.

  236. Brothers and sisters,

  237. when we see someone claiming to be a Christian,

  238. yet not joining themselves to a local church,

  239. we should have the same reaction.

  240. The Bible has no category for a lone ranger Christian.

  241. On the contrary, all over the New Testament,

  242. there's biblical illustrations for what the church is,

  243. and every illustration is a singularity making up a group.

  244. Scripture talks about church as stones in a temple.

  245. Scripture talks about the church as members of a family,

  246. sheep in a flock,

  247. members of a body,

  248. single entities making up one larger structure.

  249. And so to be a Christian is to be a member of the body of Christ.

  250. And to be a member of the body of Christ,

  251. the way Scripture talks about it,

  252. is to be a meaningful member of a healthy local church.

  253. And so back to where we were in 1 Corinthians 12.

  254. I'm going back there.

  255. 1 Corinthians 12, verses 12 through 14.

    1 Corinthians 12:12–14

  256. This is what we read at the beginning.

  257. I'm going to read it again.

  258. This is the Apostle Paul writing to a church in Corinth,

  259. and he's talking about unity in the body of Christ.

  260. And he says,

  261. Just as the body is one and has many members,

  262. and all the members of the body,

  263. though many are one body,

  264. so it is with Christ.

  265. For in one spirit we are all baptized into one body,

  266. Jews or Greeks, slaves or free,

  267. and all were made to drink of one spirit.

  268. For the body does not consist of one member,

  269. but of many.

  270. And so Paul here is arguing that the local church

  271. is the body of Christ here on earth.

  272. Now, some people read passages like this,

  273. and they say,

  274. Oh, well, he's just referring to the universal church,

  275. to the church throughout all time in history,

  276. so I don't really have to join a local church.

  277. But if you keep reading,

  278. it actually becomes quite clear.

  279. He, the Apostle Paul here,

  280. is talking about the local church,

  281. because in verse 28 he says,

  282. God has appointed in the church,

  283. that word church just means gathering,

  284. so in the church gathering,

  285. he's appointed apostles, prophets, teachers,

  286. and he goes on and on about all these different roles

  287. within local churches.

  288. And so he's pointing out to a particular body of believers.

  289. And so if you,

  290. if you are a Christian who has been baptized,

  291. then you are part of the body of Christ.

  292. How do you live out your membership in the body of Christ?

  293. You live it out by joining,

  294. committing yourself to a local church body.

  295. It's not enough to just say,

  296. I'm a Christian,

  297. I'm part of the universal church.

  298. Because you can't,

  299. you can't see the universal church.

  300. The universal church is made visible in local churches.

  301. And so the local church right now on this earth

  302. embodies what we will experience in all eternity

  303. with the universal church.

  304. So your membership now in a local church

  305. represents your membership in the universal church in eternity.

  306. You know, people often say,

  307. I'm sure you've heard it again,

  308. this goes back to our individualism.

  309. People often say,

  310. man, I don't,

  311. I don't need the church.

  312. I just,

  313. it's all about Jesus.

  314. I don't need the church.

  315. I just want to live a Christ-centered life.

  316. Friends,

  317. the Christ-centered life

  318. is the church-centered life.

  319. Because the church

  320. is the body of Christ on this earth.

  321. And so God,

  322. in his infinite wisdom,

  323. has chosen for the body of Christ

  324. on this earth right now

  325. to be for you and for me,

  326. to grow in godliness,

  327. to worship him.

  328. Not just in individual Christians

  329. having their own personal quiet time

  330. in their prayer closet,

  331. though you should do that.

  332. I'm not saying don't do that.

  333. Do that.

  334. But in the local church gathered

  335. is where Christ is honored and glorified

  336. and we are raised up

  337. as followers of Christ

  338. and grow in our love for him

  339. and for one another.

  340. And so,

  341. the reality is,

  342. is that all 43,

  343. all 43 covenant members

  344. of Seaweed Bay Baptist Church

  345. make up this particular local body of Christ.

  346. Right here,

  347. gathered at 6194 Highway 17,

  348. Allendal, South Carolina.

  349. All 43 members of this particular body

  350. need one another.

  351. You all need one another.

  352. If you're a member of this church,

  353. God has ordained in his infinite wisdom

  354. that the other 42 members of this church

  355. would be here right now

  356. to help you on your way to heaven.

  357. Our relationship with God is personal,

  358. but it's never private.

  359. It is personal,

  360. but it's never meant to be private.

  361. You are,

  362. as the Apostle Paul states,

  363. members of the body of Christ.

  364. So,

  365. since we've established

  366. that a Christian

  367. should be a member of a local church,

  368. let's then now think together,

  369. well,

  370. what do you do?

  371. What are you to do

  372. as a member of a local church?

  373. What's your responsibility?

  374. And so,

  375. I want us in our remaining time

  376. to think biblically about

  377. what do we do?

  378. What are the roles

  379. and responsibilities

  380. of a church member?

  381. Number three,

  382. number three,

  383. and there's four points total,

  384. so we're on number three.

  385. Church membership

  386. is an office

  387. and a job.

  388. Church membership

  389. is an office

  390. and a job.

  391. What do I mean by that?

  392. First,

  393. church membership

  394. is an office

  395. in that

  396. it's an elected position.

  397. it's an elected position.

  398. Just like the president

  399. of the United States

  400. cannot make himself

  401. be the president

  402. of the United States,

  403. so you and I

  404. cannot just make ourselves

  405. members of the church.

  406. Church membership

  407. is saying,

  408. I'm a Christian!

  409. Christian!

  410. And then it's the rest

  411. of the church

  412. saying,

  413. we agree!

  414. We've heard

  415. your profession

  416. of faith,

  417. we've heard

  418. your understanding

  419. of the gospel,

  420. and so your life

  421. seems to match

  422. your profession

  423. and so then

  424. we affirm you

  425. and welcome you

  426. into the membership

  427. of this church.

  428. And why do we need that?

  429. Why do we need this

  430. affirmation from one another?

  431. Well,

  432. if you're like me,

  433. we're often

  434. self-deceived,

  435. aren't we?

  436. I'm often self-deceived

  437. in lots of ways.

  438. I think I look good,

  439. you know,

  440. my wife is like,

  441. hey,

  442. fix this,

  443. fix your collar,

  444. fix your hair,

  445. you got some

  446. little dandruff

  447. back here,

  448. wipe that off,

  449. it looks bad,

  450. you know,

  451. I think I look good

  452. and I need someone else

  453. to point out

  454. and say,

  455. Josh,

  456. you don't look good,

  457. fix yourself,

  458. right?

  459. I'm often self-deceived

  460. and so if I'm self-deceived

  461. in these little ways,

  462. man,

  463. I can be self-deceived

  464. in my spiritual life

  465. as well.

  466. I can think

  467. I'm doing good,

  468. I can think

  469. I'm thinking rightly,

  470. I can think

  471. I'm obeying God's word,

  472. but then when I

  473. maybe tell somebody

  474. my plans

  475. or when I speak

  476. this way or that way,

  477. I have brothers and sisters

  478. come to me and say,

  479. hey,

  480. Josh,

  481. that's not right,

  482. that's not the way

  483. a Christian lives,

  484. that's not,

  485. that's sinful,

  486. right?

  487. I need other people

  488. to speak into my life

  489. and judge whether or not

  490. I'm actually

  491. confessing the true gospel.

  492. Am I believing

  493. the true gospel?

  494. I need other Christians

  495. to look at my confession

  496. of faith and say,

  497. yes,

  498. that's the true gospel,

  499. biblically.

  500. Or if I'm living

  501. the way

  502. a gospel professor

  503. should live.

  504. Josh,

  505. hey,

  506. you're not living

  507. like a Christian,

  508. you need to stop

  509. doing that,

  510. you need to stop

  511. thinking that.

  512. And the reality is,

  513. and this is where

  514. I think a lot of churches

  515. miss it,

  516. Jesus gave

  517. the local church

  518. the authority

  519. to affirm

  520. and to disaffirm

  521. people's professions

  522. of faith.

  523. We don't have time

  524. to go into it right now,

  525. but when Jesus

  526. gives Peter

  527. the keys of the kingdom

  528. in Matthew 16

  529. and then in Matthew 18

  530. he gives the whole church

  531. these same keys

  532. to the kingdom,

  533. he is saying

  534. to the church,

  535. to local churches

  536. that you church

  537. have the authority

  538. to affirm

  539. someone's true

  540. or false

  541. profession

  542. of faith.

  543. And so church membership

  544. is an office.

  545. you also

  546. have a job to do.

  547. Church membership

  548. is also a job.

  549. It's more than just

  550. voting on a budget,

  551. it's more than just

  552. voting on a building,

  553. it's voting on

  554. welcoming

  555. and sending out

  556. members of the church.

  557. That's the most

  558. important job you have

  559. as a church member.

  560. And so,

  561. how do we talk about this?

  562. So,

  563. church members are,

  564. your job as a church member

  565. is to guard the what

  566. and the who

  567. of the gospel.

  568. your job as a church member

  569. is to guard the what

  570. and the who

  571. of the gospel.

  572. So,

  573. what do I mean by that?

  574. Well,

  575. first,

  576. you are to guard

  577. the what of the gospel.

  578. God cares about

  579. the purity of his church,

  580. therefore,

  581. it's the job of you,

  582. church members,

  583. to make sure

  584. the true gospel

  585. is being preached

  586. from this pulpit.

  587. So,

  588. if Jonathan gets up here

  589. and he starts preaching

  590. a false gospel,

  591. he starts denying

  592. the Trinity,

  593. fire him.

  594. And he just amened,

  595. so,

  596. don't forget it.

  597. If the gospel

  598. is not preached,

  599. the true biblical gospel

  600. is not preached,

  601. it is the job of the church

  602. to point that out,

  603. to make sure

  604. good,

  605. true doctrine

  606. is being taught

  607. in classrooms.

  608. Where am I getting this?

  609. Galatians 1,

  610. 6,

  611. the Apostle Paul,

  612. he's writing to the church

  613. in Galatia,

  614. and he says,

  615. I am astonished

  616. that you,

  617. and that you there

  618. is plural,

  619. I am astonished

  620. that you all,

  621. church in Galatia,

  622. I'm astonished

  623. that you all

  624. are deserting him

  625. who called you

  626. in the grace of Christ

  627. and are turning

  628. to a different gospel.

  629. Not that there

  630. is another one,

  631. but there are some

  632. who would trouble you

  633. and who want to

  634. distort the gospel

  635. of Christ.

  636. And so,

  637. there was a false gospel

  638. being preached

  639. in this church

  640. in Galatia

  641. and the Apostle Paul

  642. goes to them

  643. and he says,

  644. he doesn't,

  645. notice what he doesn't do,

  646. he doesn't go to the pastors

  647. of that church

  648. or the leaders

  649. in that church,

  650. he goes to the whole church

  651. and he says,

  652. whole church,

  653. stop believing

  654. a false gospel,

  655. it's your job

  656. to make sure

  657. the true gospel

  658. is preached here.

  659. And so,

  660. he calls out

  661. the entire church

  662. for abandoning

  663. the true gospel.

  664. He holds the entire church

  665. accountable

  666. because it's the job

  667. of the whole church

  668. to protect

  669. the what

  670. of the gospel,

  671. to make sure

  672. the true gospel

  673. is being preached

  674. and proclaimed

  675. and taught

  676. and believed.

  677. And so,

  678. it's the job

  679. of church members

  680. to guard

  681. the what

  682. of the gospel,

  683. it's one of the most

  684. important things

  685. you'll do.

  686. Second,

  687. other most important

  688. thing you will do

  689. if you're a member

  690. of this church

  691. is to guard

  692. the who

  693. of the gospel.

  694. Guard the who

  695. of the gospel.

  696. By that,

  697. I mean,

  698. you're guarding

  699. who are true

  700. gospel professors.

  701. You see,

  702. in the church

  703. in Corinth,

  704. there was a church

  705. member

  706. who was living

  707. in serious,

  708. outward,

  709. and unrepentant sin.

  710. We see this

  711. from 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 5:1

  712. chapter 5,

  713. verses 1 and 2.

  714. The apostle Paul

  715. says to this church,

  716. it's actually reported

  717. that there is

  718. sexual immorality

  719. among you

  720. and of a kind

  721. that is not tolerated

  722. even among the pagans

  723. for a man

  724. has his father's wife

  725. and you're arrogant.

  726. Wants you not

  727. rather to mourn?

  728. Let him

  729. who has done this

  730. be removed

  731. from among you.

  732. So again,

  733. there's this member

  734. of this church,

  735. he's living in

  736. great sin,

  737. serious sin,

  738. outward sin,

  739. unrepentant sin,

  740. he's not repenting

  741. of it.

  742. And Paul does not

  743. just call out

  744. the pastors

  745. and the elders.

  746. He calls the entire church

  747. and all the members

  748. of the church.

  749. Calls them out

  750. for allowing this man

  751. to remain

  752. a member of their church.

  753. And what does he

  754. tell them to do about it?

  755. He tells them

  756. to remove this man

  757. from among them.

  758. We keep reading

  759. in that same passage,

  760. 1 Corinthians 5,

  761. he says to the church,

  762. when you are assembled

  763. in the name

  764. of the Lord Jesus

  765. and my spirit is present

  766. with the power

  767. of the Lord Jesus,

  768. you are church,

  769. you are to deliver

  770. this man to Satan

  771. for the destruction

  772. of the flesh

  773. so that his spirit

  774. may be saved

  775. in the day

  776. of the Lord.

  777. And so,

  778. what he's saying is

  779. the whole church,

  780. when the whole church

  781. is gathered,

  782. they have a job

  783. to do

  784. and that is

  785. to remove

  786. this man

  787. from their membership.

  788. This is what we know

  789. as excommunication

  790. or church discipline.

  791. Remove him

  792. from your membership.

  793. don't consider him

  794. a brother in Christ.

  795. It doesn't mean

  796. he can't come

  797. into the building,

  798. it means he can't

  799. be a member

  800. of the church.

  801. Why?

  802. What's the point?

  803. Is this to embarrass

  804. this man?

  805. Is this to,

  806. for us to be

  807. holier than thou?

  808. Is this exclusivity

  809. just for the sake

  810. of being exclusive

  811. and pushing him out

  812. because he's not

  813. godly enough?

  814. No.

  815. Verse 5,

  816. they are to remove

  817. this man

  818. so that his spirit

  819. might be saved

  820. in the day of the Lord.

  821. So the apostle Paul

  822. is commanding

  823. this church at Corinth

  824. to remove this man

  825. from membership,

  826. to excommunicate him

  827. so that he doesn't

  828. go to hell.

  829. So that he realizes,

  830. oh wow,

  831. I used to be a part

  832. of this group of people

  833. called the church.

  834. They used to be affirming

  835. my profession of faith

  836. to be true,

  837. but because of the way

  838. I'm living,

  839. it doesn't look like

  840. I'm really a Christian

  841. and so they've put me

  842. out of their group.

  843. I'm not part

  844. of the church anymore.

  845. And what's the point?

  846. The point is that man

  847. is supposed to realize

  848. this is a weighty thing.

  849. This is a big deal.

  850. Being a part of the church

  851. was better than being

  852. part of the world.

  853. It's so that this man

  854. would feel the weight

  855. of his sin.

  856. He would recognize

  857. the weight of his sin

  858. and that it's infinitely better

  859. to be in Christ

  860. and in the church

  861. than cast out

  862. into the world.

  863. And the goal

  864. is repentance.

  865. The goal is restoration

  866. so that his soul

  867. would be saved,

  868. the scripture says.

  869. And so,

  870. biblical,

  871. restorative,

  872. church discipline

  873. protects the reputation

  874. of Christ

  875. because you don't have

  876. people in the church

  877. who are claiming

  878. to be Christians

  879. yet living like

  880. the rest of the world.

  881. so it protects

  882. the reputation

  883. of Christ

  884. and it protects

  885. the souls of people

  886. because you're no longer

  887. allowing them

  888. to be a member

  889. of your church

  890. if they're living

  891. in serious,

  892. outward,

  893. unrepentant sin.

  894. Notice I say

  895. unrepentant.

  896. The church

  897. is not a place

  898. for non-sinners,

  899. right?

  900. Because none of us

  901. would be here.

  902. The church is a place

  903. for repenting sinners.

  904. sinners.

  905. And so,

  906. this keeps,

  907. this excommunication

  908. keeps from,

  909. a church

  910. from giving false assurance

  911. of salvation

  912. to someone

  913. who's not truly born again.

  914. On the positive side

  915. of this coin,

  916. right,

  917. it's hard,

  918. we don't like to think

  919. about excommunication,

  920. church discipline,

  921. but on the positive side

  922. of this same coin,

  923. brothers and sisters,

  924. biblical church membership

  925. should be of great

  926. encouragement to you

  927. if you're a Christian.

  928. Because if you think about it,

  929. to be a member of a church

  930. is to say

  931. that the other,

  932. all the other members

  933. of that church

  934. are welcoming you

  935. into their membership.

  936. They're agreeing that,

  937. yes,

  938. Josh really does seem

  939. like a Christian.

  940. He really is repenting

  941. and believing.

  942. He really is following

  943. the true gospel.

  944. So we're welcoming him

  945. into our membership.

  946. Brothers and sisters,

  947. this should give you

  948. great assurance

  949. of salvation.

  950. When you have a group

  951. of people who are

  952. allowing you at the table

  953. in communion,

  954. allowing you to take

  955. the bread and the cup,

  956. it should be of great

  957. encouragement to you.

  958. And so every member

  959. of a local church

  960. has a God-given

  961. biblical responsibility

  962. to guard the what

  963. and the who

  964. of the gospel

  965. by sending and receiving

  966. church members.

  967. And so all this,

  968. then,

  969. do you know

  970. what this means for us?

  971. It means,

  972. in order to guard

  973. the what and the who

  974. of the gospel,

  975. it means we must

  976. know the gospel

  977. and know it well.

  978. And it also means

  979. we must know

  980. one another well,

  981. know one another deeply.

  982. So first,

  983. we must know

  984. the gospel well.

  985. We can't guard

  986. this gospel

  987. if we don't know

  988. this gospel.

  989. We can't hold

  990. one another

  991. accountable to

  992. sound doctrine

  993. if we don't know

  994. sound doctrine ourselves.

  995. So my encouragement

  996. to each one of you,

  997. brothers and sisters,

  998. is to keep growing

  999. in biblical literacy.

  1000. Keep growing

  1001. in your understanding

  1002. of the Bible

  1003. and of God

  1004. and his word.

  1005. Keep studying

  1006. scripture together.

  1007. Keep reading

  1008. good books together.

  1009. Keep coming here

  1010. on Sunday morning.

  1011. Y'all are all

  1012. doing a great job

  1013. of that today.

  1014. Keep listening

  1015. to the Bible

  1016. being preached

  1017. and taught

  1018. and discussed

  1019. so that you can

  1020. sharpen one another.

1021. So know the gospel well.

  1022. Second,

  1023. you must know

  1024. one another well.

  1025. Remember,

  1026. you are one body.

  1027. You need each other.

  1028. That passage

  1029. in 1 Corinthians 12,

  1030. Paul goes on.

  1031. He says,

  1032. the eye can't say

  1033. to the hand,

1034. I have no need of you,

  1035. nor the head

  1036. to the feet,

1037. I have no need of you.

  1038. No,

  1039. God has so composed

  1040. the body,

  1041. giving greater honor

  1042. to the part

  1043. that lacked it,

  1044. that there may be

  1045. no division

  1046. in the body,

  1047. but that the members

1048. may have the same care

  1049. for one another.

  1050. If one member suffers,

  1051. all suffer together.

  1052. If one member

  1053. is honored,

  1054. all rejoice together.

  1055. And so God's word

  1056. here calls us

  1057. to be unified

  1058. as a body,

1059. to know one another well,

1060. to love one another deeply.

  1061. A great way

  1062. you can do this

  1063. is simply by practicing

  1064. the one another commandments

  1065. in scripture.

  1066. There's over 30

  1067. one another commandments

  1068. in the New Testament.

  1069. Over 30 of them.

1070. And most of those examples,

  1071. the author is writing

  1072. to a local church

  1073. and he's telling them

  1074. how to live

  1075. their lives together.

  1076. Be at peace

  1077. with one another.

  1078. Honor one another.

  1079. Submit to one another.

  1080. Pray for one another.

  1081. Build up one another.

  1082. Confess your sins

  1083. to one another.

1084. And the list goes on

1085. and on and on and on

  1086. of these

  1087. one another commandments.

  1088. And so

  1089. this one anothering

  1090. should be happening

  1091. all the time

  1092. in our local churches

  1093. and that's a great

  1094. measuring stick

1095. for us in our own lives

1096. to look at and say,

1097. man, how am I doing

  1098. at that?

  1099. How am I doing

  1100. at being at peace

  1101. with one another?

  1102. Am I pursuing peace

1103. or am I sort of a divisive

  1104. and gossipy type person?

  1105. Am I praying

  1106. for the other members

  1107. of my church

1108. or do I really not

  1109. think about them

  1110. much throughout the week?

  1111. Am I confessing

1112. my sins to each other

1113. or do I want to just hide

1114. and act like I have

  1115. it all together?

  1116. Guess what?

1117. None of us have it

  1118. all together.

1119. We all need to be

  1120. confessing our sins

  1121. to one another.

  1122. I need people to

  1123. look at my life

  1124. and call me out

  1125. when I'm in sin.

  1126. So,

  1127. if we're saying

  1128. that church membership

  1129. is a job,

1130. if we have a job

1131. to do as a church membership,

  1132. it would be nice

1133. to have a job description,

  1134. wouldn't it?

  1135. Right?

1136. Who would take a job

  1137. without having

  1138. a clear job description?

1139. I don't think any of us would.

  1140. That'd be crazy.

  1141. So it'd be nice

1142. to have a clear job description

1143. if I'm going to sign up

  1144. for a job.

  1145. And this leads us

  1146. to our fourth

  1147. and final point.

  1148. The church member's

  1149. job description

  1150. is

  1151. your church covenant.

  1152. Your church covenant

  1153. is your job description.

1154. So in your church covenant,

  1155. you'll find just about

  1156. everything that we've

1157. talked about in this sermon

  1158. listed out.

  1159. And I actually have

  1160. your church covenant here,

  1161. Seaweed Bay Baptist Church.

1162. I have it here in my hand.

1163. And so I'm going to read

1164. a few of these points

  1165. of your church covenant,

  1166. the things that you

  1167. have promised

  1168. before God

  1169. and before one another,

  1170. the way you're going

  1171. to live out

  1172. this thing called

  1173. church membership together.

  1174. From your church covenant,

  1175. it says,

  1176. we have,

  1177. by God's grace,

  1178. been led to repent

  1179. of our sins

1180. and believe in the gospel

  1181. of Jesus Christ.

  1182. We've been baptized

  1183. as believers

1184. in the name of the Father,

  1185. Son, and Holy Spirit

  1186. and have joined ourselves

  1187. to this body.

  1188. We now,

1189. in dependence on his spirit,

  1190. gladly and reverently

  1191. make this covenant together.

1192. So there was that first point

  1193. I made earlier.

  1194. A church member

  1195. is someone who's been

  1196. born again and baptized.

  1197. So there that is

  1198. in your church covenant.

  1199. Next,

1200. you say in your covenant,

  1201. we will,

  1202. and I'm not reading

  1203. every word,

  1204. but you say,

  1205. we will pursue unity.

  1206. We will walk together

  1207. in Christian love

  1208. as we care for

1209. and watch over one another.

  1210. Seeking one another's

  1211. spiritual good

  1212. at all times,

  1213. we'll pray for,

  1214. encourage,

  1215. and warn,

  1216. and rebuke,

  1217. and admonish one another

  1218. as the occasion

  1219. may acquire.

1220. And so there it is again

  1221. in your church covenant.

  1222. You're covenanting

  1223. to pursue unity,

  1224. to watch over

  1225. each other's souls,

  1226. to encourage,

  1227. and rebuke,

  1228. and admonish

1229. where it needs to happen.

  1230. And again,

1231. in order for this to happen,

  1232. you must know

  1233. one another well.

  1234. You must be vulnerable

  1235. with one another.

  1236. You must be willing

  1237. to let people

  1238. into your lives.

  1239. I heard a quote

  1240. last week

  1241. from a pastor

  1242. and I loved it.

1243. I thought it was great.

  1244. He said,

  1245. church membership

  1246. is where

  1247. the phrase,

1248. it's none of your business

  1249. goes to die.

  1250. Church membership

  1251. is where

1252. it's none of your business

  1253. goes to die.

  1254. I love that.

1255. It's none of your business.

  1256. No,

  1257. it is your business

  1258. if you're living together

  1259. in covenant unity

  1260. in a church.

  1261. And so,

1262. back to your church covenant,

  1263. you say,

  1264. we will gather regularly.

  1265. We will share Christ.

1266. We will put each other's needs

  1267. before our own.

  1268. We will commit

  1269. to holiness.

  1270. We will follow

  1271. God's design

  1272. for his church,

  1273. supporting and upholding

1274. the preaching of the Bible.

  1275. So there it is.

  1276. You're guarding

1277. the what of the gospel.

  1278. You've covenanted,

  1279. church,

  1280. Siwi Bay,

  1281. you've covenanted

  1282. to guard the what

  1283. of the gospel

  1284. because you say,

  1285. we will uphold

1286. the preaching of the Bible.

  1287. And then you say,

  1288. we will uphold

  1289. the right administration

  1290. of believers' baptism

  1291. in the Lord's Supper

  1292. and when necessary,

  1293. the exercise

  1294. of church discipline.

  1295. So there it is.

1296. Right there in your covenant,

  1297. you're guarding

1298. the who of the gospel.

  1299. You're going to uphold

  1300. baptism,

  1301. the Lord's Supper,

  1302. and exercise

  1303. church discipline

  1304. where it needs

  1305. to happen.

  1306. And so with all

  1307. of this in mind,

1308. with all of these things

1309. in mind that we've talked

  1310. about,

  1311. about church membership,

  1312. we come to a

  1313. biblically informed

  1314. definition of the church

  1315. and of church membership.

  1316. And that's,

  1317. it's simple.

  1318. It's that church membership

  1319. is all about

  1320. a church taking

  1321. spiritually,

  1322. spiritual responsibility

1323. for you as the individual

  1324. and you,

  1325. individual Christian,

  1326. taking spiritual responsibility

1327. for the rest of the church

1328. that you are a member of.

  1329. That's what we mean

  1330. by church membership.

  1331. We mean taking responsibility

  1332. for one another.

1333. And so brothers and sisters

  1334. in Christ,

  1335. this,

  1336. this,

  1337. this is biblical

  1338. church membership,

  1339. what we've talked about

  1340. this morning.

  1341. It's,

  1342. it's a living organism.

  1343. It's,

  1344. it's a particular family

  1345. of believers.

  1346. It's,

1347. it's the body of Christ.

  1348. It's a group of people

  1349. who've been saved

  1350. by grace alone

  1351. through faith alone

  1352. and Christ alone

  1353. and,

1354. and whom God has plucked

  1355. out of the world,

  1356. the kingdom of darkness

1357. and placed into the kingdom

  1358. of light.

  1359. Church membership

  1360. is redeemed saints

  1361. from all different walks

  1362. of life,

  1363. rich,

  1364. poor,

  1365. young,

  1366. old,

  1367. black,

  1368. white,

1369. and every color in between

  1370. submitting our lives

1371. to Christ as our Lord

  1372. and to one another.

  1373. Not because we're naturally

  1374. drawn to one another,

  1375. but because we're members

  1376. of one body,

  1377. the body of Christ.

  1378. It's a group of people

  1379. who've covenanted together

  1380. to protect the gospel

1381. and to give gospel affirmation

  1382. to one another.

  1383. It's a group of people

  1384. who've promised to help

  1385. one another

  1386. as we sojourn together

  1387. on this earth,

1388. rejoicing when things are good,

1389. weeping when things are bad,

  1390. sharing one another's burdens,

1391. and cheering for one another

  1392. until we all cross

  1393. the finish line

  1394. when Christ returns.

  1395. And so Christian,

1396. the journey through this life

  1397. is dangerous.

  1398. Sin seduces us

1399. from the right and the left.

  1400. Satan tempts us

  1401. day and night,

1402. our own minds and hearts

1403. try to lead us astray.

  1404. The world convinces us

  1405. that true happiness

  1406. and flourishing

  1407. is found out there,

  1408. and you can't resist

  1409. these temptations.

  1410. I cannot resist

  1411. these temptations

  1412. on my own,

  1413. and God knows that.

  1414. God knows that,

1415. and so in his infinite wisdom,

1416. he's given us local churches

  1417. while we sojourn

  1418. through this life

  1419. to help one another

1420. on our way to heaven.

1421. So you need one another

1422. as you look to Jesus,

  1423. the chief shepherd

1424. who laid down his life

  1425. for us, the sheep.

  1426. Let's pray together.

1427. God, we thank you for Christ.

1428. We thank you for the gospel.

  1429. Thank you that Christ

  1430. saves sinners like us.

1431. And God, we thank you

  1432. that in your wisdom

  1433. you have seen fit

  1434. to gather your people

  1435. into local churches.

  1436. Thank you

  1437. for this local church.

1438. Thank you for Seawee Bay

  1439. Baptist Church.

  1440. Thank you for Jonathan

  1441. and Treg,

  1442. pastors of this church.

  1443. Thank you

  1444. for others who lead

  1445. and serve

  1446. in this church family.

1447. Thank you for every member here.

  1448. We pray that

  1449. each one would

  1450. would see their

  1451. their job

  1452. of a church member,

  1453. the job they have

  1454. to encourage one another,

  1455. to love one another,

  1456. to point one another

  1457. to Christ.

  1458. God, we pray

  1459. that you would

  1460. continue to bless

  1461. this local church family.

  1462. may they grow

  1463. in godliness.

  1464. May you continue

  1465. to shape them

  1466. into the image

  1467. of your son

  1468. until we all

  1469. see you

  1470. face to face.

  1471. We thank you

  1472. for these things.

  1473. We pray them

1474. in the name of Christ

  1475. and by the power

  1476. of your spirit.

  1477. Amen.
