  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up to the book of Exodus, chapter 19.

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  2. The book of Exodus.

  3. We're moving just one book over from Genesis.

  4. ! Flip a few pages to the right.

  5. I guess you're flipping to the left.

  6. You're moving to the right.

  7. And you'll find Exodus there, chapter 19.

  8. Our verses this morning are verses 1 through 9.

  9. And then when you find that, put your finger there and flip to the New Testament in the

  10. book of Romans.

    Romans 3:19–26

  11. Chapter 3, verses 19 through 26.

  12. We're continuing our Advent series this morning covering the promises of God.

  13. And today we're looking specifically at what we call the Mosaic Covenant.

  14. It's this covenant of law.

  15. And I'll be honest with you, this sermon title is a little bit misleading this morning.

  16. It's the promise of perfect righteousness.

  17. You know, the problem is the law does not promise perfect righteousness.

  18. The law presents perfect righteousness.

  19. But it cannot promise perfect righteousness.

  20. The gospel is the only thing that both presents and promises and even produces perfect righteousness

  21. in those who believe.

  22. So, we'll see that unfold this morning.

  23. When you founded Exodus chapter 19, verses 1 through 9.

    Exodus 19:1–9

  24. Let's stand in honor of the reading of God's word this morning.

  25. Let's stand in honor of the reading of Exodus chapter 19.

  27. Let's stand in honor of the reading of Exodus chapter 19.

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  28. On the third new moon, after the people of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt,

  29. on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.

  30. They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai,

  31. and they encamped in the wilderness.

  32. There Israel encamped before the mountain, while Moses went up to God.

  33. The Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying,

  34. Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel,

  35. You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians,

  36. and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.

  37. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant,

  38. you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples.

  39. For all the earth is mine, and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

  40. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.

  41. So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them

  42. all these words that the Lord had commanded him.

  43. All the people answered together and said,

  44. All that the Lord has spoken, we will do.

  45. And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.

  46. And the Lord said to Moses,

  47. Behold, I am coming to you in a thick cloud,

  48. that the people may hear when I speak with you,

  49. and may also believe you forever.

  50. Flipping to Romans chapter 3, 19 through 26.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  51. Now we know that whatever the law says,

  52. it speaks to those who are under the law,

  53. so that every mouth may be stopped,

  54. and the whole world may be held accountable to God.

  55. For by works of the law,

  56. no human being will be justified in his sight,

  57. since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

  58. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law,

  59. although the law and the prophets bear witness to it.

  60. The righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.

  61. For there is no distinction.

  62. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

  63. and are justified by his grace as a gift

  64. through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

  65. whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood

  66. to be received by faith.

  67. This was to show God's righteousness,

  68. because in his divine forbearance,

  69. he had passed over former sins.

  70. It was to show his righteousness at the present time

  71. so that he might be just

  72. and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

  73. The grass withers and the flower fades,

  74. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  75. Father, we praise you for your word,

  76. Old Testament and New Testament,

  77. and the ways that every word, every line,

  78. every page, every chapter draws us to Christ Jesus,

  79. who is the fulfillment of all your promises.

  80. We pray, Lord, fix our eyes on him this morning.

  81. Put our trust in him this morning,

  82. away from us and our efforts

  83. and entirely on him and his completed work on the cross.

  84. We pray in Jesus' name.

  85. Amen.

  86. You may be seated.

  87. Amen.

  88. Amen.

  89. Christmas season is here,

  90. which means it is also the season of holiday giveaways.

  91. I don't know if it's true for you,

  92. but I love a good giveaway.

  93. I entered one this week.

  94. One company is giving away, quote,

  95. an unforgettable five-day, four-night trip to Sweden

  96. featuring round-trip flights,

  97. one night in a legendary ice suite.

  98. Don't know what that means.

  99. Winter activities.

  100. Who knows what that holds?

  101. $500 in spending money.

  102. I can get on board with that.

  103. Tomorrow, a well-known worldwide global coffee company

  104. will start their annual sweepstakes

  105. where you can win burnt-tasting coffee for life.

  106. A $1,000 Delta gift card,

  107. $500 in Marriott points, amongst other things.

  108. Everybody loves to dream about winning the grand prize,

  109. but the more you enter these things,

  110. the more you learn to pay attention

  111. to four key words down at the bottom of the page.

  112. Terms and conditions apply.

  113. Those four words are important, aren't they?

  114. You can dream all you want about the grand prize,

  115. but if you don't meet those terms and conditions,

  116. guess what?

  117. You will not be receiving the grand prize.

  118. Those terms and conditions are essential.

  119. And as we look at our passage this morning,

  120. here in the book of Exodus,

  121. what we see is that those four words

  122. are also deeply important for the people of Israel.

  123. Israel.

  124. Those four words, they're not hidden at the bottom of the page.

  125. They're not printed in small text.

  126. They're not read at super speed at the end of a commercial.

  127. They are literally shouted out loud from the mountaintop.

  128. Here in the book of Exodus,

  129. what we see is that God makes these incredible promises to his people Israel,

  130. but terms and conditions apply.

  131. So let's take a look together at what's being held out here.

  132. What's the offer that's on the table?

  133. First, what we see,

  134. God graciously promises to bless his people.

  135. It's our first point this morning.

  136. First, we see God graciously promises to bless his people.

  137. And if that sounds familiar to you, that's good.

  138. That means you were paying attention last week.

  139. And what we're really doing is we're picking right up where we left off last time

  140. with this promise of great blessing.

  141. Do you remember what God promised to Abraham?

  142. Abraham, this threefold promise of great prosperity,

  143. of a place where he could dwell with God,

  144. this promise of posterity.

  145. Well, this same general promise is now regulated by law in the book of Exodus.

  146. We zoom ahead some 430 years later,

  147. and what we see is that God has indeed multiplied Abraham.

  148. His descendants have multiplied.

  149. But as we come to Exodus, we find them enslaved in Egypt.

  150. They aren't really prosperous.

  151. They're at the bottom of the social totem pole.

  152. They don't have their own place.

  153. They're there in somebody else's kingdom.

  154. They're suffering under a harsh taskmaster, Pharaoh.

  155. They are oppressed.

  156. But we know from going through Genesis that even this is part of the plan, isn't it?

  157. Do you remember what God promised Abraham in chapter 15, verse 13?

  158. Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs,

  159. and will be servants there.

  160. They will be afflicted for 400 years.

  161. That sounds specific.

  162. But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve,

  163. and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.

  164. And so what we see now in the first half of Exodus,

  165. it shows us 10 plagues and 430 years later,

  166. God has fulfilled His promise.

  167. God has judged Egypt.

  168. God has delivered Israel.

  169. And so now here in Exodus 19,

  170. they have come to the foot of Mount Sinai,

  171. where God will deliver them the law.

  172. But notice what He does before that.

  173. Look there starting in verse 4.

  174. Before He tells them anything to do,

  175. any steps to take,

  176. He reminds them of everything that just happened.

  177. I mean, how quickly do we forget, right?

  178. He reminds them of His grace.

  179. He says, I just delivered you miraculously.

  180. You were slaves.

  181. Don't forget it.

  182. You were hungry.

  183. Don't forget it.

  184. You were mistreated.

  185. Don't forget it.

  186. But I rescued you.

  187. I bore you up on eagle's wings,

  188. it says.

  189. I brought you to Myself.

  190. So everything that follows,

  191. all of this law that follows,

  192. even though it is law,

  193. all of it is rooted in grace.

  194. All of it is rooted in God's eternal plan of redemption,

  195. of His people.

  196. God says,

  197. whatever obedience I'm going to require of you

  198. is a response to my work of redemption.

  199. The law was never meant to be a ladder

  200. to climb our way up to God.

  201. But even so,

  202. even so,

  203. obedience is the path to blessing.

  204. So He says,

  205. if you indeed will obey My voice,

  206. and if you will keep My covenant,

  207. here's what I'm going to do.

  208. I'm going to bless you in five distinct ways.

  209. Look at what He promises here.

  210. First,

  211. He says,

  212. you will be My treasured possession.

  213. I mean,

  214. wow.

  215. Wow.

  216. Already,

  217. that is mind-blowing grace,

  218. isn't it?

  219. When you think about,

  220. what is your most treasured possession?

  221. If you just picture it in your mind right now,

  222. I bet you can imagine it.

  223. You know exactly what it looks like.

  224. Maybe it's your Bible.

  225. Maybe it's a family heirloom.

  226. It's something that you treasure.

  227. Nobody else in the world may think about it that way,

  228. but you treasure that.

  229. You know exactly where it is at all times.

  230. You keep it safe.

  231. You keep it tucked away.

  232. You watch over it.

  233. You care for it.

  234. You love this treasured possession.

  235. God says,

  236. you will be My treasured possession.

  237. I will treasure you.

  238. Second,

  239. notice He gives them this place of distinction.

  240. He elevates them.

  241. He makes a distinction between them and everybody else.

  242. He says,

  243. they will be His distinct people.

  244. My treasured possession among all peoples.

  245. This is not equality.

  246. They are elevated,

  247. lifted up by God's own choosing,

  248. by His grace,

  249. to this distinct place of honor and blessing.

  250. Most of you love children in general.

  251. I like children.

  252. I'll be honest.

  253. I love my children more.

  254. I have a special affection,

  255. a special love,

  256. a special inclination

  257. towards my children.

  258. That's right.

  259. That's good.

  260. It's because they're mine.

  261. They have this special place of distinction.

  262. And here God says,

  263. you, Israel,

  264. you will be My people

  265. amongst all the peoples of the earth.

  266. There's this distinction.

  267. He gives them.

  268. Third blessing.

  269. He says,

  270. you will be a kingdom.

  271. I mean,

  272. can you imagine

  273. the reversal

  274. that they're experiencing here?

  275. They were just slaves

  276. in somebody else's kingdom.

  277. They were the lowest

  278. on the totem pole.

  279. They were bossed around

  280. and tossed around

  281. and discarded.

  282. But now,

  283. He says,

  284. you're not going to be

  285. at the bottom

  286. of somebody else's totem pole

  287. and somebody else's kingdom anymore.

  288. You're no longer slaves.

  289. I've brought you out.

  290. You are going to be a kingdom.

  291. I will establish you

  292. as a kingdom.

  293. Because even better than that,

  294. fourth blessing,

  295. you're not just a kingdom.

  296. Fourth,

  297. you'll be a kingdom of priests.

  298. You,

  299. from the greatest to the least,

  300. will be rulers.

  301. From the greatest to the least,

  302. you will be worshipers.

  303. You will all,

  304. from the greatest to the least,

  305. you will all commune with me

  306. in worship.

  307. You'll be a people of prayer

  308. and a people of worship

  309. and a people of sacrifice.

  310. Your attention won't be

  311. on your work

  312. or on your labor

  313. or on building bricks

  314. out of straw.

  315. Your focus,

  316. from the greatest to the least,

  317. will be on me.

  318. You'll lead one another

  319. in worship.

  320. You'll be a kingdom

  321. of priests.

  322. And fifth blessing,

  323. he promises,

  324. you will be a holy nation.

  325. Not just a nation.

  326. Not just a kingdom.

  327. You will not be like

  328. any of the other kingdoms

  329. of the earth.

  330. You know what's going to

  331. set you apart?

  332. You will be with me,

  333. God says,

  334. and you will be like me.

  335. You will be holy

  336. as I am holy.

  337. See,

  338. God's people

  339. are not like everybody else,

  340. are they?

  341. We are distinct.

  342. That's the nice way to say it.

  343. You know what the honest way is?

  344. We're weird.

  345. We stand out

  346. in the midst of the world.

  347. Why?

  348. What's this defining quality

  349. of holiness?

  350. You want to stick out

  351. in the midst of darkness?

  352. We're called lights

  353. in the midst of darkness, right?

  354. Holiness

  355. causes God's people

  356. to be distinct,

  357. set out.

  358. We're this chosen,

  359. holy,

  360. redeemed,

  361. distinct people

  362. treasuring God

  363. above all else

  364. and treasured

  365. by God

  366. above all others.

  367. This is

  368. incredible blessing

  369. that God holds out

  370. for them there,

  371. isn't it?

  372. A special offer.

  373. Come and get it.

  374. You can have this blessing too.

  375. All this can be yours,

  376. he says.

  377. It's all rooted in grace.

  378. I've brought you out.

  379. I will fulfill my promises.

  380. It is guaranteed,

  381. but

  382. for you to enjoy

  383. these blessings,

  384. terms and conditions

  385. apply.

  386. Second point

  387. this morning.

  388. Second,

  389. we see

  390. enjoyment

  391. of God's blessings

  392. is conditional.

  393. Enjoyment

  394. of God's blessings

  395. is

  396. conditional.

  397. Look there again

  398. to verse 5.

  399. There's a key word there

  400. that we need to notice

  401. in verse 5.

  402. You see what it is?

  403. It's that

  404. two-letter word

  405. if.

  406. That if

  407. is important,

  408. isn't it?

  409. If

  410. you will indeed

  411. obey my voice

  412. and

  413. if

  414. you will keep

  415. my commandments,

  416. all of this

  417. will come to you.

  418. God is going to

  419. fulfill his promises

  420. with or without

  421. you specifically.

  422. It's all rooted

  423. in grace again,

  424. but for you

  425. individual

  426. personally to enjoy it,

  427. there's this big

  428. fat

  429. if.

  430. Enjoyment

  431. of God's blessings

  432. is

  433. conditional.

  434. Look there to verse 7.

  435. Now,

  436. Moses sets

  437. before the people

  438. all the words

  439. that the Lord

  440. had commanded him

  441. and so

  442. in response,

  443. verse 8,

  444. what do they say?

  445. They said,

  446. we'll do it,

  447. God.

  448. We will

  449. obey.

  450. All you've said,

  451. we're going to do it.

  452. We'll do everything

  453. you ask.

  454. And so,

  455. look what happens next.

  456. I didn't read

  457. the next 15 chapters

  458. of Exodus,

  459. but I'm going to

  460. summarize it here

  461. in about five seconds

  462. for you.

  463. Okay?

  464. Moses

  465. takes that

  466. yes back

  467. up the mountain,

  468. up to God.

  469. God says,

  470. okay,

  471. here's ten commandments.

  472. He speaks those ten

  473. in the hearing

  474. of all the people.

  475. They all hear

  476. his voice,

  477. but as he speaks

  478. those ten words,

  479. the people hear it,

  480. they are absolutely

  481. mortified

  482. at the voice

  483. of the Lord.

  484. They are undone.

  485. And they say

  486. to Moses,

  487. you've got to be

  488. the in-between for us.

  489. We can't stand

  490. to be in his presence.

  491. It's like they recognize

  492. the main point already,

  493. don't they?

  494. They understand

  495. at this powerful

  496. voice of the Lord

  497. that they are sinners

  498. in the presence

  499. of a holy God.

  500. And sin

  501. and holiness

  502. simply do not mix.

  503. It's like oil and water.

  504. Except in this case,

  505. this holy God

  506. is full of

  507. righteous wrath,

  508. righteous anger

  509. towards sin

  510. and sinners.

  511. sinners.

  512. Their sin

  513. and our sin

  514. it puts us

  515. in danger.

  516. It puts us

  517. in danger

  518. of the wrath

  519. of God.

  520. They seem

  521. to understand this.

  522. So they say,

  523. Moses,

  524. you're the man.

  525. You go up.

  526. We're not going up.

  527. We can't be here.

  528. We can't hear

  529. this voice of the Lord.

  530. And so,

  531. God,

  532. Moses goes up.

  533. He sees,

  534. he meets

  535. with the Lord.

  536. God delivers

  537. the rest of the law

  538. to Moses

  539. who then,

  540. again,

  541. as they go between,

  542. he brings it

  543. to the people

  544. and the people

  545. of God,

  546. again,

  547. they give their yes.

  548. They say,

  549. we will do this law.

  550. We want the blessing.

  551. We'll keep your word.

  552. We promise.

  553. Chapter 24,

  554. they seal it

  555. in a covenant.

  556. You remember

  557. chapter 15 of Genesis?

  558. And this covenant ceremony

  559. as God passes through

  560. the aisle

  561. with the severed animals

  562. on either side

  563. as if to say,

  564. may I be

  565. like these animals,

  566. Abraham,

  567. if I don't fulfill

  568. my covenant with you.

  569. If I don't fulfill

  570. my word to you,

  571. may I be

  572. slaughtered

  573. like these animals.

  574. Well,

  575. here,

  576. chapter 24,

  577. in the same way,

  578. the people of God

  579. enter into

  580. an oath,

  581. this promise

  582. of obedience

  583. to the Lord.

  584. Moses builds

  585. an altar,

  586. he makes sacrifices,

  587. and as he reads

  588. aloud the law,

  589. he slaughters

  590. the animals,

  591. he throws

  592. the blood

  593. all over the altar,

  594. and all over

  595. the people.

  596. What does that mean?

  597. Again,

  598. it's the people

  599. saying,

  600. may we be like

  601. these oxen,

  602. slaughtered,

  603. and destroyed.

  604. May we be

  605. mutilated

  606. if we fail

  607. to keep covenant

  608. with you, God.

  609. May we be

  610. completely destroyed

  611. if we disobey.

  612. They recognize,

  613. don't they,

  614. obedience is

  615. essential

  616. for enjoying

  617. the blessings

  618. of the covenant.

  619. They put their

  620. own blood

  621. on the line

  622. here.

  623. Yet again,

  624. they profess

  625. with their lips.

  626. They say,

  627. we're going to

  628. do it.

  629. We will obey

  630. every word

  631. of the law.

  632. We promise.

  633. And it seems

  634. like they mean it,

  635. doesn't it?

  636. You know what

  637. happens next?

  638. Moses goes

  639. back up.

  640. He receives

  641. the law

  642. written on

  643. tablets of stone

  644. by the very

  645. fingers of God.

  646. He comes back

  647. down the mountain

  648. and what does

  649. he find

  650. the people doing?

  651. Exodus 32.

  652. They are

  653. worshiping

  654. an idol.

  655. They have

  656. fashioned

  657. for themselves

  658. a golden

  659. calf to worship.

  660. Moses can't

  661. believe it.

  662. He's like,

  663. what are you

  664. guys doing?

  665. He gets

  666. so angry.

  667. He smashes

  668. the tablets.

  669. He grinds

  670. them up

  671. into a powder.

  672. He makes

  673. the people

  674. drink it.

  675. I don't

  676. blame them.

  677. He's like,

  678. what is wrong

  679. with you people?

  680. How could

  681. you be so

  682. foolish?

  683. All this

  684. blessing was

  685. held out

  686. to you

  687. and you

  688. promised

  689. you would

  690. obey.

  691. You did

  692. the thing

  693. with the

  694. blood.

  695. You put

  696. it all

  697. over yourself.

  698. You swore

  699. your allegiance

  700. to the Lord.

  701. What

  702. happened

  703. to you?

  704. Why can't

  705. you obey

  706. like you

  707. said you

  708. would?

  709. You see

  710. this sometimes

  711. with children,

  712. don't you?

  713. Not my kids.

  714. My kids

  715. are perfect.

  716. This never

  717. happens in my

  718. house, right?

  719. Sometimes in

  720. other people's

  721. houses, they

  722. talk to their

  723. kids, you tell

  724. them one thing,

  725. they look you

  726. right in the

  727. eye, they say,

  728. okay, dad, I

  729. got it.

  730. Dad turns his

  731. back, goes to

  732. the other room,

  733. and it's like

  734. that conversation

  735. never happened.

  736. What is

  737. that?

  738. Church, haven't

  739. we done the

  740. same thing?

  741. we say

  742. with our

  743. lips, okay

  744. God, this

  745. is it, I

  746. promise I'll

  747. obey.

  748. This time is

  749. different, I'm

  750. done lying, I

  751. am done cheating,

  752. I am done

  753. drinking myself

  754. drunk, no

  755. more, I'm

  756. done, I'll be

  757. nicer to my

  758. brother.

  759. And then

  760. some time goes

  761. by, it's like

  762. you get amnesia,

  763. and you're just,

  764. you're right back

  765. in it again.

  766. What is that?

  767. Why can't we

  768. obey?

  769. I'll tell you

  770. why.

  771. The reason

  772. is our sin.

  773. Our sin.

  774. Here's our

  775. problem.

  776. Everyone who

  777. is born of

  778. Adam is

  779. born into

  780. this world

  781. with a sin

  782. nature.

  783. And what

  784. that is, is

  785. a nature that

  786. is both

  787. hostile to

  788. God, we

  789. are against

  790. God, anti

  791. God, and

  792. we are unable,

  793. despite our

  794. hardest efforts,

  795. unable to

  796. please God.

  797. We literally

  798. cannot

  799. obey.

  800. That's our

  801. problem.

  802. That's what Paul

  803. says in Romans

  804. 8.

  805. He says, the

  806. mind that is

  807. set on the

  808. flesh is

  809. hostile to

  810. God, for it

  811. does not

  812. submit to

  813. God's law.

  814. Indeed, it

  815. cannot.

  816. Those who are

  817. in the flesh

  818. cannot please

  819. God.

  820. God, it's

  821. not just

  822. you, it's

  823. not just

  824. me, this

  825. is a

  826. universal,

  827. worldwide,

  828. global problem.

  829. This is the

  830. point that Paul

  831. makes in

  832. Romans 3.

  833. So go ahead

  834. and flip

  835. there with

  836. me, Romans

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  837. chapter 3.

  838. Hopefully you

  839. had your

  840. thumb right

  841. there in that

  842. passage.

  843. And I want

  844. you to back

  845. it up a

  846. little bit,

  847. because right

  848. before our

  849. text, God

  850. through Paul,

  851. he's quoting

  852. from the

  853. Psalms here,

  854. starting in

  855. verse 10,

  856. to make this

  857. point.

  858. He says,

  859. none is

  860. righteous.

  861. No, not

  862. one.

  863. You say, well,

  864. what about

  865. me?

  866. None.

  867. No one

  868. understands.

  869. No one

  870. seeks for

  871. God.

  872. All have

  873. turned aside.

  874. Together they

  875. have become

  876. worthless.

  877. No one

  878. does good.

  879. Not even

  880. one.

  881. Verse 18

  882. sums it up

  883. like this.

  884. There's no

  885. fear of God

  886. before their

  887. eyes.

  888. Israel's

  889. problem

  890. our

  891. problem

  892. is that

  893. we, by

  894. nature,

  895. are in

  896. Adam.

  897. And if

  898. we are

  899. in

  900. Adam,

  901. then we

  902. are in

  903. sin.

  904. And if

  905. we are

  906. in

  907. sin,

  908. then we

  909. are in

  910. trouble

  911. with God.

  912. And the

  913. law,

  914. as good

  915. as it

  916. is,

  917. the law

  918. can't

  919. help us

  920. because

  921. verse 20,

  922. chapter 3,

  923. verse 20,

  924. it says,

  925. by works

  926. of the

  927. law,

  928. no human

  929. being will

  930. be justified

  931. in his

  932. sight.

  933. Do you

  934. see the

  935. problem?

  936. It is a

  937. big one.

  938. God's

  939. people must

  940. be perfect

  941. to enjoy

  942. these blessings

  943. and yet

  944. none of us

  945. qualify.

  946. And the

  947. law,

  948. as good

  949. as it

  950. is,

  951. it can't

  952. get us

  953. there

  954. either.

  955. And so

  956. then I

  957. got a

  958. question,

  959. and maybe

  960. you do

  961. too,

  962. as you

  963. think about

  964. this.

  965. You might

  966. ask,

  967. well,

  968. if the

  969. law can't

  970. produce this

  971. righteousness

  972. in us,

  973. and the

  974. law can't

  975. change our

  976. sin nature,

  977. and the

  978. law can't

  979. justify us

  980. before God

  981. if we

  982. obey and

  983. obey and

  984. obey.

  985. What good

  986. is the

  987. law?

  988. What good

  989. is it?

  990. Why is it

  991. even here?

  992. It's worthless,

  993. right?

  994. Let me stop you

  995. right there

  996. because first

  997. of all,

  998. the law is

  999. not the

  1000. problem.

  1001. God's

  1002. word is

  1003. not the

  1004. problem.

  1005. The Psalms

  1006. make this

  1007. abundantly

  1008. clear.

  1009. The law

  1010. is good.

  1011. The law

  1012. of the

  1013. Lord is

  1014. perfect,

  1015. David says

  1016. in Psalm

  1017. 19,

  1018. reviving

  1019. the soul.

  1020. The law

  1021. is good.

  1022. We are

  1023. the problem.

  1024. We are

  1025. unable.

  1026. The law

  1027. itself is

  1028. useful,

  1029. and it's

  1030. useful in

  1031. three main

  1032. ways.

  1033. The reformers

  1034. would present

  1035. these three

  1036. main ways.

  1037. John Calvin,

  1038. I think,

  1039. was the first

  1040. to present

  1041. this in his

  1042. institutes.

  1043. Three uses

  1044. of the law

  1045. for one.

  1046. The law

  1047. serves as

  1048. a mirror.

  1049. It serves

  1050. as a mirror.

  1051. When we

  1052. look into

  1053. it,

  1054. what it

  1055. does is

  1056. it reflects

  1057. back on

  1058. us and

  1059. our sinfulness.

  1060. When we

  1061. look into

  1062. the law,

  1063. we see

  1064. our own

  1065. inability.

  1066. We see

  1067. our wickedness

  1068. on display.

  1069. You know,

  1070. when you have

  1071. a big zit

  1072. right in the

  1073. middle of your

  1074. forehead,

  1075. okay,

  1076. think back to

  1077. your teenage

  1078. years,

  1079. guys.

  1080. You got

  1081. this big

  1082. zit right in

  1083. the middle

  1084. of your

  1085. forehead.

  1086. The last

  1087. place you

  1088. want to

  1089. look,

  1090. where is

  1091. it?

  1092. You avoid

  1093. that mirror

  1094. at all

  1095. costs,

  1096. don't you?

  1097. It's not

  1098. the mirror's

  1099. fault that

  1100. you have

  1101. is it.

  1102. It's not

  1103. the mirror's

  1104. fault.

  1105. The law

  1106. itself is

  1107. good and

  1108. holy and

  1109. pure,

  1110. but we

  1111. are not.

  1112. As we

  1113. look into

  1114. it,

  1115. we see

  1116. our own

  1117. imperfections

  1118. highlighted.

  1119. It serves

  1120. as a mirror.

  1121. Another use

  1122. is as a

  1123. restrainer of

  1124. evil.

  1125. The law

  1126. serves as

  1127. a restrainer

  1128. of evil.

  1129. Now,

  1130. again,

  1131. the law,

  1132. it doesn't

  1133. regenerate the

  1134. heart.

  1135. It cannot

  1136. justify.

  1137. It cannot

  1138. change our

  1139. sin nature,

  1140. but it

  1141. does in

  1142. some ways

  1143. restrain

  1144. wickedness.

  1145. Wherever the

  1146. law exists,

  1147. whether externally

  1148. in a written

  1149. code or

  1150. internally on

  1151. our conscience,

  1152. the law

  1153. itself,

  1154. it restrains

  1155. wickedness.

  1156. It's like

  1157. when you're

  1158. driving up

  1159. and down

  1160. 17.

  1161. You're

  1162. running late.

  1163. When there

  1164. are no

  1165. police,

  1166. you feel

  1167. the freedom

  1168. to go a

  1169. little bit

  1170. faster and

  1171. speed and

  1172. get to your

  1173. destination

  1174. sooner,

  1175. but if you

  1176. see that

  1177. little hood

  1178. of the car

  1179. sticking out

  1180. from a

  1181. driveway,

  1182. you know

  1183. the lights

  1184. are there,

  1185. what are

  1186. you going

  1187. to do?

  1188. It slows

  1189. you down.

  1190. It restrains

  1191. your wickedness.

  1192. And then if

  1193. you know

  1194. that police

  1195. car is there

  1196. day after

  1197. day after

  1198. day after

  1199. day in

  1200. that same

  1201. spot right

  1202. there on

  1203. Highway 17,

  1204. it restrains

  1205. your urge to

  1206. break the

  1207. law,

  1208. at least until

  1209. you get past

  1210. it and you

  1211. do what you

  1212. want.

  1213. The law

  1214. functions in

  1215. this way.

  1216. It restrains

  1217. evil,

  1218. but again,

  1219. again,

  1220. restraint does

  1221. not mean

  1222. regeneration.

  1223. Those first

  1224. two uses

  1225. are for

  1226. believer and

  1227. non-believer

  1228. alike,

  1229. but for the

  1230. believer,

  1231. there's this

  1232. third use

  1233. of the law

  1234. and it's

  1235. this.

  1236. The law

  1237. reveals for

  1238. us what

  1239. holiness

  1240. looks like.

  1241. The law

  1242. reveals God's

  1243. will for

  1244. us.

  1245. See,

  1246. the believer

  1247. doesn't use

  1248. the law

  1249. as a ladder

  1250. to climb

  1251. their way

  1252. up to

  1253. heaven,

  1254. but we

  1255. do absolutely

  1256. use it as

  1257. a map

  1258. and a

  1259. guide to

  1260. show us

  1261. the pathway

  1262. of holiness.

  1263. Having been

  1264. made new,

  1265. having been

  1266. reborn,

  1267. now we

  1268. can look at

  1269. the law

  1270. and say,

  1271. well,

  1272. what does it

  1273. look like

  1274. practically to

  1275. love my

  1276. neighbor?

  1277. What does it

  1278. look like

  1279. practically for

  1280. me to reflect

  1281. the holiness

  1282. of God?

  1283. What does it

  1284. look like for

  1285. me practically

  1286. to resemble

  1287. the image of

  1288. God as we

  1289. were made

  1290. to do?

  1291. What is

  1292. God by

  1293. His Spirit

  1294. empowering me

  1295. to be and

  1296. to do?

  1297. Well,

  1298. the law,

  1299. it shows

  1300. us.

  1301. But do you

  1302. know ultimately

  1303. the main

  1304. purpose of

  1305. the law?

  1306. Above all

  1307. of these,

  1308. the main

  1309. purpose of

  1310. the law

  1311. is that it

  1312. might drive

  1313. sinners to

  1314. Christ,

  1315. who is the

  1316. fulfillment

  1317. of the

  1318. law.

  1319. God offers

  1320. incredible

  1321. blessing here

  1322. to His

  1323. people.

  1324. Enjoyment

  1325. of these

  1326. blessings is

  1327. conditional,

  1328. and we

  1329. could add,

  1330. none of

  1331. us have

  1332. met the

  1333. conditions,

  1334. but here's

  1335. the good

  1336. news of

  1337. the gospel.

  1338. Third,

  1339. Christ,

  1340. Jesus,

  1341. meets all

  1342. the conditions.

  1343. Look again

  1344. to Romans

  1345. 3,

  1346. starting in

  1347. verse 21.

  1348. Paul just

  1349. said,

  1350. no one will

  1351. be justified

  1352. by works

  1353. of the law.

  1354. it cannot

  1355. be done.

  1356. You cannot

  1357. use it as

  1358. a ladder to

  1359. climb your

  1360. way to

  1361. God.

  1362. It is

  1363. impossible

  1364. for you,

  1365. and he

  1366. made it

  1367. pretty clear,

  1368. all of us

  1369. are in this

  1370. condition of

  1371. sin.

  1372. This sin

  1373. problem is

  1374. all of our

  1375. problem.

  1376. The law

  1377. can't make

  1378. us right

  1379. with God,

  1380. but,

  1381. verse 21,

  1382. but now

  1383. the righteousness

  1384. of God

  1385. has been

  1386. manifested

  1387. apart from

  1388. the law.

  1389. Apart

  1390. from the

  1391. law.

  1392. Although the

  1393. law and the

  1394. prophets bear

  1395. witness to

  1396. it, what is

  1397. it?

  1398. Verse 22,

  1399. the righteousness

  1400. of God

  1401. through faith

  1402. in Jesus

  1403. Christ for

  1404. all who

  1405. simply

  1406. believe.

  1407. The

  1408. righteousness

  1409. that the

  1410. law demands,

  1411. but cannot

  1412. produce,

  1413. the true

  1414. perfect

  1415. righteousness

  1416. now is

  1417. manifested

  1418. apart from

  1419. the law.

  1420. How?

  1421. Galatians

  1422. 4 tells

  1423. us.

  1424. It's the

  1425. story of

  1426. Christmas.

  1427. He says,

  1428. we were

  1429. enslaved like

  1430. Israel.

  1431. We were

  1432. enslaved to

  1433. the elementary

  1434. principles of

  1435. the world,

  1436. but when the

  1437. fullness of

  1438. time had

  1439. come,

  1440. God sent

  1441. forth his

  1442. son,

  1443. born of

  1444. a woman,

  1445. born under

  1446. the law,

  1447. to redeem

  1448. those who

  1449. were under

  1450. the law,

  1451. so that we

  1452. might receive

  1453. adoption as

  1454. sons.

  1455. See,

  1456. true righteousness

  1457. has come in

  1458. Christ,

  1459. and it is

  1460. received simply

  1461. by faith in

  1462. him.

  1463. Do you know

  1464. why we make

  1465. such a big

  1466. deal about

  1467. the virgin

  1468. birth?

  1469. It's a

  1470. central part of

  1471. the Christmas

  1472. story,

  1473. right?

  1474. The virgin

  1475. birth,

  1476. Matthew 1,

  1477. 23,

  1478. behold,

  1479. the virgin

  1480. shall conceive

  1481. and bear a

  1482. son.

  1483. They shall

  1484. call his

  1485. name Emmanuel.

  1486. He's quoting

  1487. Isaiah.

  1488. He prophesied

  1489. that some

  1490. 700 years

  1491. before it

  1492. happened,

  1493. but why is

  1494. it so

  1495. important?

  1496. Outside of

  1497. just being a

  1498. miracle of

  1499. God's power,

  1500. it's important

  1501. because it

  1502. shows us

  1503. this child,

  1504. this baby,

  1505. is not born

  1506. like you

  1507. and I.

  1508. He is not

  1509. born of

  1510. Adam.

  1511. He's not

  1512. born in

  1513. Adam.

  1514. He does not

  1515. inherit Adam's

  1516. sin nature

  1517. as we do.

  1518. He does not

  1519. inherit Adam's

  1520. curse as we

  1521. do.

  1522. He does not

  1523. inherit Adam's

  1524. guilt as we

  1525. do.

  1526. He's not

  1527. born with

  1528. this big

  1529. banner hanging

  1530. over his

  1531. life of

  1532. unable to

  1533. please God.

  1534. He is not

  1535. born as a

  1536. slave to sin.

  1537. No,

  1538. he's born with

  1539. the potential

  1540. to be the

  1541. second Adam,

  1542. the one who

  1543. will perfectly

  1544. obey in our

  1545. place where

  1546. all of us

  1547. have failed.

  1548. In fact,

  1549. he is born

  1550. as the true

  1551. and better

  1552. Israel.

  1553. He is the

  1554. one who will

  1555. keep covenant

  1556. where they and

  1557. where we all

  1558. have broken

  1559. covenant with

  1560. the Lord.

  1561. Christ Jesus

  1562. is born not

  1563. to do away

  1564. with the law

  1565. but to

  1566. fulfill it

  1567. and in

  1568. doing so

  1569. to earn by

  1570. right all

  1571. the blessings

  1572. of the

  1573. covenant.

  1574. Here's what

  1575. makes the

  1576. gospel so

  1577. shocking.

  1578. Church,

  1579. what Jesus

  1580. has earned

  1581. by right,

  1582. he gives

  1583. to us

  1584. by grace

  1585. and we

  1586. receive it

  1587. all not

  1588. by obeying,

  1589. not by

  1590. working,

  1591. not by

  1592. laboring,

  1593. not by

  1594. earning,

  1595. we receive

  1596. all of his

  1597. righteousness,

  1598. all of the

  1599. blessings of

  1600. God simply

  1601. by coming to

  1602. him in

  1603. faith.

  1604. The child

  1605. that we

  1606. celebrate at

  1607. Christmas

  1608. came to

  1609. die,

  1610. to take

  1611. away our

  1612. curse that

  1613. we've earned

  1614. for our

  1615. disobedience,

  1616. but church,

  1617. we need to

  1618. also know

  1619. he came to

  1620. live perfectly

  1621. in our

  1622. place.

  1623. We need

  1624. both for

  1625. our salvation.

  1626. We need

  1627. his death

  1628. in our

  1629. place,

  1630. we need

  1631. his resurrection

  1632. but we

  1633. also need

  1634. his sinless

  1635. life.

  1636. We need

  1637. him to

  1638. take our

  1639. curse but

  1640. we also

  1641. need him

  1642. to provide

  1643. our blessing.

  1644. That's

  1645. exactly what

  1646. he came

  1647. to do,

  1648. that's what

  1649. we celebrate

  1650. with his

  1651. arrival here

  1652. at Christmas

  1653. in Jesus

  1654. Christ.

  1655. God has

  1656. given to

  1657. us freely

  1658. what he

  1659. demands of

  1660. us,

  1661. namely the

  1662. perfect

  1663. holiness,

  1664. perfect

  1665. righteousness,

  1666. what the

  1667. law demands,

  1668. the gospel

  1669. supplies.

  1670. Friend,

  1671. apart from

  1672. him,

  1673. you know

  1674. what we

  1675. are?

  1676. We,

  1677. like Israel,

  1678. are slaves

  1679. in a

  1680. truer and

  1681. a greater

  1682. way.

  1683. we are

  1684. slaves to

  1685. sin,

  1686. but in

  1687. him,

  1688. in him

  1689. by faith,

  1690. we are

  1691. redeemed,

  1692. we are

  1693. brought out,

  1694. we are

  1695. plucked out

  1696. and rescued

  1697. from slavery,

  1698. we're brought

  1699. out of

  1700. darkness.

  1701. Apart from

  1702. him,

  1703. we are

  1704. enemies of

  1705. God,

  1706. destined for

  1707. wrath,

  1708. but in

  1709. him,

  1710. we are

  1711. his treasured

  1712. possession.

  1713. The very

  1714. bride of

  1715. Christ.

  1716. He loves

  1717. us and

  1718. gave himself

  1719. up for

  1720. us,

  1721. he cherishes

  1722. us and

  1723. watches over

  1724. us and

  1725. cares for

  1726. us and

  1727. will do

  1728. so for

  1729. the rest

  1730. of

  1731. eternity.

  1732. Apart from

  1733. him,

  1734. we are

  1735. just like

  1736. every other

  1737. sinner born

  1738. in Adam,

  1739. but in

  1740. him,

  1741. we are

  1742. his distinct

  1743. people,

  1744. chosen by

  1745. grace.

  1746. out of

  1747. all the

  1748. peoples of

  1749. the earth,

  1750. we are

  1751. uniquely and

  1752. distinctly

  1753. his.

  1754. We are

  1755. his own

  1756. children and

  1757. he loves

  1758. us with a

  1759. special

  1760. fatherly

  1761. love.

  1762. Apart from

  1763. him,

  1764. we belong to

  1765. the kingdom

  1766. of darkness,

  1767. but in

  1768. him,

  1769. we are

  1770. a kingdom.

  1771. We are

  1772. citizens and

  1773. saints of

  1774. the kingdom

  1775. of God.

  1776. We are

  1777. ambassadors of

  1778. the king,

  1779. the one to

  1780. whom all

  1781. authority in

  1782. heaven and

  1783. on earth

  1784. has been

  1785. given,

  1786. has given

  1787. that authority

  1788. to us.

  1789. The church

  1790. is an

  1791. embassy of

  1792. the kingdom

  1793. of heaven

  1794. here on

  1795. earth.

  1796. We here

  1797. as we

  1798. gather is

  1799. a foretaste

  1800. of glory

  1801. of the

  1802. kingdom to

  1803. come.

  1804. Apart from

  1805. him,

  1806. we cannot

  1807. know God,

  1808. but in

  1809. him,

  1810. we are a

  1811. kingdom of

  1812. priests.

  1813. We offer

  1814. ourselves up

  1815. as living

  1816. sacrifices,

  1817. holy and

  1818. pleasing to

  1819. him,

  1820. our spiritual

  1821. act of

  1822. worship.

  1823. We offer

  1824. up the

  1825. sacrifice of

  1826. our lives.

  1827. We offer

  1828. up a

  1829. sacrifice of

  1830. thanksgiving.

  1831. We offer

  1832. up the

  1833. sacrifice of

  1834. our very

  1835. own hearts.

  1836. We live

  1837. in communion

  1838. with the

  1839. Lord.

  1840. We are

  1841. the temple

  1842. of the

  1843. living God,

  1844. his own

  1845. spirit dwelling

  1846. within us.

  1847. Apart from

  1848. him,

  1849. we are

  1850. ruined by

  1851. the curse

  1852. of sin,

  1853. unable to

  1854. please him,

  1855. but in

  1856. him,

  1857. despite all

  1858. our faults,

  1859. church,

  1860. we are a

  1861. holy nation,

  1862. shining like

  1863. lights in

  1864. the midst of

  1865. a crooked

  1866. and twisted

  1867. generation,

  1868. reflecting the

  1869. holiness of

  1870. the glory of

  1871. God in the

  1872. world.

  1873. We are being

  1874. remade into

  1875. the image of

  1876. Christ who

  1877. is the image

  1878. of God.

  1879. And as we

  1880. look to him

  1881. who obeyed

  1882. for us in

  1883. our place,

  1884. we then look

  1885. to his

  1886. word and

  1887. the law

  1888. to guide

  1889. us and

  1890. direct us

  1891. on the

  1892. way.

  1893. So 1 Peter

  1894. tells us,

  1895. as you

  1896. come to

  1897. him,

  1898. a living

  1899. stone rejected

  1900. by men,

  1901. but in the

  1902. sight of God

  1903. chosen and

  1904. precious,

  1905. you yourselves

  1906. like living

  1907. stones are

  1908. being built

  1909. up as a

  1910. spiritual

  1911. house to

  1912. be a holy

  1913. priesthood,

  1914. to offer

  1915. spiritual

  1916. sacrifices,

  1917. acceptable to

  1918. God through

  1919. Jesus Christ.

  1920. Listen to

  1921. what he says

  1922. to believers.

  1923. You are a

  1924. chosen race,

  1925. a royal

  1926. priesthood,

  1927. a holy

  1928. nation,

  1929. a people

  1930. for his

  1931. own possession

  1932. that you

  1933. may proclaim

  1934. the excellencies

  1935. of him who

  1936. called you out

  1937. of darkness

  1938. into his

  1939. marvelous light.

  1940. Once you

  1941. were not a

  1942. people,

  1943. now you are

  1944. God's people.

  1945. Once you

  1946. had not

  1947. received mercy,

  1948. now you

  1949. have received

  1950. mercy.

  1951. Every promise

  1952. made is

  1953. fulfilled in

  1954. this baby

  1955. in the

  1956. manger and

  1957. given to

  1958. us by

  1959. grace,

  1960. simply through

  1961. faith in

  1962. him,

  1963. all because

  1964. this child

  1965. was born

  1966. to live,

  1967. to die,

  1968. to rise

  1969. for sinners

  1970. like us.

  1971. and there's

  1972. a poem

  1973. that I

  1974. think about

  1975. often,

  1976. I know

  1977. I've quoted

  1978. it here

  1979. before by

  1980. John Bunyan.

  1981. Run,

  1982. John,

  1983. run,

  1984. the law

  1985. demands,

  1986. but gives

  1987. us neither

  1988. feet nor

  1989. hands.

  1990. Far

  1991. better news

  1992. the gospel

  1993. brings,

  1994. which bids

  1995. us fly

  1996. and gives

  1997. us wings.

  1998. Christmas

  1999. is the

  2000. announcement

  2001. that Christ

  2002. has come

  2003. to fulfill

  2004. the law's

  2005. demands

  2006. and to

  2007. earn for

  2008. us the

  2009. blessing of

  2010. perfect

  2011. obedience.

  2012. He has

  2013. come to

  2014. give what

  2015. the law

  2016. demands.

  2017. Friend,

  2018. have you

  2019. come to

  2020. him?

  2021. Are you

  2022. walking with

  2023. him in

  2024. holiness?

  2025. righteousness?

  2026. As you

  2027. look to

  2028. the law,

  2029. do you

  2030. use it

  2031. as a

  2032. ladder

  2033. to climb

  2034. your way

  2035. to God

  2036. by your

  2037. own effort

  2038. to try

  2039. and to

  2040. strive

  2041. and to

  2042. earn

  2043. and to

  2044. work?

  2045. Or do

  2046. you see

  2047. yourself

  2048. in it

  2049. as a

  2050. mirror

  2051. showing

  2052. your

  2053. weakness

  2054. and

  2055. ultimately

  2056. Christ's

  2057. strength?

  2058. Do you

  2059. lean on

  2060. your own

  2061. righteousness

  2062. this

  2063. Christmas?

  2064. Or have

  2065. you received

  2066. true

  2067. righteousness

  2068. through faith

  2069. in Jesus

  2070. Christ?

  2071. are you

  2072. resting

  2073. and rejoicing

  2074. this Christmas

  2075. in the

  2076. true

  2077. promise

  2078. of perfect

  2079. righteousness

  2080. apart from

  2081. the law

  2082. by faith

  2083. in Christ?

  2084. Let's pray.

  2085. Father,

  2086. it is good

  2087. news that

  2088. the righteousness

  2089. of God

  2090. has been

  2091. manifested

  2092. apart from

  2093. the law.

  2094. It is

  2095. good news

  2096. that Jesus

  2097. has come

  2098. to fulfill

  2099. the law

  2100. in our

  2101. place.

  2102. it is

  2103. good news

  2104. that Christ

  2105. has come

  2106. to take

  2107. away our

  2108. curse

  2109. and our

  2110. shame

  2111. and to

  2112. replace it

  2113. with all

  2114. the blessings

  2115. of God.

  2116. It is

  2117. good news

  2118. that we

  2119. can't earn

  2120. it,

  2121. Lord,

  2122. but we

  2123. simply

  2124. receive it

  2125. by faith.

  2126. We pray,

  2127. Lord,

  2128. would we

  2129. look to

  2130. you with

  2131. eyes of

  2132. faith?

  2133. Would we

  2134. give you

  2135. the praise

  2136. that you

  2137. do for

  2138. this work

  2139. of redemption?

  2140. We pray

  2141. this in

  2142. Jesus'

  2143. name.

  2144. Amen.

  2145. Amen.
