  1. Please take your Bibles and let's open them up this morning to Genesis chapter 26.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  2. ! Genesis chapter 26. We're continuing our series through the book of Genesis.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  3. And if you don't have your own Bible with you this morning, that's okay.

  4. We provide those in the seat back nearby.

  5. It should be one in the seat back in front of you.

  6. I think our passage this morning is on page 18 or thereabouts, 18 or 19.

  7. You will want to have a copy of God's Word open with you as we walk through this passage together.

  8. So Genesis chapter 26.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  9. And when you found it, let's stand this morning in honor of the reading of the Word of God.

  10. Now there was a famine in the land besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham.

  11. And Isaac went to Gerar, to Abimelech, king of the Philistines.

  12. And the Lord appeared to him and said,

  13. Do not go down to Egypt.

  14. Dwell in the land of which I shall tell you.

  15. Sojourn in this land.

  16. And I will be with you and will bless you.

  17. For to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands.

  18. And I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father.

  19. I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands.

  20. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.

  21. Because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

  22. So Isaac settled in Gerar.

  23. And when the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said,

  24. She is my sister.

  25. For he feared to say, my wife, thinking,

  26. Lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,

  27. because she was attractive in appearance.

  28. When he had been there a long time,

  29. Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looked out of a window

  30. and saw Isaac laughing with Rebekah, his wife.

  31. So Abimelech called Isaac and said,

  32. Behold, she is your wife.

  33. How then could you say she is my sister?

  34. Isaac said to him,

  35. Because I thought, lest I die because of her.

  36. Abimelech said,

  37. What is this you have done to us?

  38. One of the people might easily have lain with your wife,

  39. and you would have brought guilt upon us.

  40. So Abimelech warned all the people, saying,

  41. Whoever touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

  42. And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold.

  43. The Lord blessed him.

  44. And the man became rich and gained more and more until he became very wealthy.

  45. He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants.

  46. So that the Philistines envied him.

  47. Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells

  48. that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father.

  49. And Abimelech said to Isaac,

  50. Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.

  51. So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the valley of Gerar and settled there.

  52. And Isaac dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the days of Abraham his father,

  53. which the Philistines had stopped after the death of Abraham.

  54. And he gave them the names that his father had given them.

  55. But when Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found there a well of spring water,

  56. the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying,

  57. The water is ours.

  58. So he called the name of that well, Isek, because they contended with him.

  59. Then they dug another well and they quarreled over that one also.

  60. So he called its name Sitna.

  61. And he moved from there and dug another well.

  62. And they did not quarrel over it.

  63. So he called its name Rehoboth, saying,

  64. For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

  65. From there he went up to Beersheba.

  66. And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said,

  67. I am the God of Abraham your father.

  68. Fear not, for I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.

  69. So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there.

  70. And there Isaac's servants dug a well.

  71. When Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzeth, his advisor, and Phicol, the commander of his army,

  72. Isaac said to him,

  73. Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have sent me away from you?

  74. And they said,

  75. We see plainly that the Lord has been with you.

  76. So we said,

  77. Let there be a sworn pact between us, between you and us,

  78. and let us make a covenant with you,

  79. that you will do us no harm,

  80. just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good,

  81. and have sent you away in peace.

  82. You are now the blessed of the Lord.

  83. So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

  84. In the morning they rose early and exchanged oaths,

  85. and Isaac sent them on their way,

  86. and they departed from him in peace.

  87. That same day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well they had dug,

  88. and said to him,

  89. We have found water.

  90. He called its name Sheba.

  91. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

  92. When Esau was 40 years old,

  93. he took Judith, the daughter of Beeri, the Hittite, to be his wife,

  94. and Basamat, the daughter of Elon, the Hittite,

  95. and they made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah.

  96. The grass withers, and the flower fades,

  97. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  98. Father, we ask now as we open up your word,

  99. as we step back into what seems like a familiar story.

  100. God, would you teach us yet again?

  101. Would you open up our eyes to see and our ears to hear

  102. and our hearts to receive the truth this morning?

  103. We pray in Jesus' name.

  104. Amen.

  105. You may be seated.

  106. You've probably heard the phrase,

  107. History repeats itself.

  108. Mark Twain would say,

  109. No, history does not repeat itself,

  110. but it often rhymes.

  111. Most of you are familiar with the story of the Titanic.

  112. I assume the Titanic was billed as the unsinkable ship,

  113. but we all know, of course, how that turned out.

  114. The captain of the ship, Edward Smith,

  115. he ignored repeated warnings, several warnings,

  116. before eventually crashing into the iceberg

  117. and sinking the Titanic,

  118. ultimately leading to the death of over 1,500 passengers.

  119. What you may not be as familiar with

  120. is the story of the Titan.

  121. The Titan was a much smaller vessel than the Titanic.

  122. It was a submersible vessel.

  123. It could only hold maybe five people,

  124. but it actually met a similar fate as the Titanic.

  125. The submersible Titan imploded about three years ago

  126. on its way down into the depths of the ocean

  127. to explore, guess what?

  128. The wreckage of the Titanic.

  129. And the similarities between the two stories

  130. are pretty eerie when you start digging into it.

  131. Just like the designers of the Titanic,

  132. the designers of the Titan thought that their design,

  133. their vessel, was unsinkable.

  134. And just like Captain Smith of the Titanic,

  135. Captain Rush of the Titan,

  136. ignored many clear and repeated warnings.

  137. Just like the Titanic,

  138. the Titan now is destroyed

  139. along with the lives of all those who were on board.

  140. If you pay attention,

  141. if you live long enough,

  142. you might notice some of these repeated rhymes

  143. and different events throughout history.

  144. You might have seen some several repeated instances

  145. even in your own life.

  146. And as you read through the Bible,

  147. it's interesting,

  148. you see a lot of this repetition

  149. even in the pages of Scripture.

  150. Our passage this morning

  151. ought to sound very familiar to you.

  152. If you were here

  153. when we preached through Genesis chapter 12

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  154. and then again with Genesis chapter 20,

    Genesis 20 chapter mention

  155. what you'll notice is that

  156. many of the same events

  157. that Abraham went through

  158. in chapter 12 and in chapter 20

  159. are happening again here

  160. a generation later

  161. in the life of Isaac.

  162. This is not accidental.

  163. When we see this sort of repetition in Scripture,

  164. I think we're meant to stop

  165. and ask ourselves,

  166. why is history repeating like this?

  167. We're meant to connect the dots

  168. and see what is it that connects

  169. these similar events

  170. and then to take it one step beyond that

  171. to see what is it that connects us

  172. to these events.

  173. Is there any similarities here

  174. between Abraham's experience

  175. and then Isaac's experience

  176. and then all the way to us

  177. and our experience in Christ?

  178. And what I think you'll see

  179. as we walk through the passage this morning

  180. is that yes,

  181. there is many, many, many rhymes

  182. with our own experience.

  183. Here's the big idea this morning for us.

  184. We, like Isaac,

  185. and like Abraham before him,

  186. face all sorts of problems in this life.

  187. But we do so with all the confidence

  188. of the promises of God for us in Christ.

  189. And we'll see this in two parts this morning.

  190. If you're taking notes,

  191. this will be our outline.

  192. We'll see both the promises first

  193. and then second,

  194. we'll see the problems.

  195. So let's look first here at the promises.

  196. The promises.

  197. Look there with me,

  198. starting in verse one.

  199. And I wonder if you notice

  200. the way that this chapter is structured,

  201. it's sort of like a sandwich.

  202. Now you have these promises of God here

  203. followed by all sorts of dramatic problems.

  204. And then at the end,

  205. it ends again with these same

  206. glorious promises of God.

  207. So we have promises,

  208. problems, promises.

  209. We should notice also

  210. that this story is out of chronological order.

  211. Did you notice that?

  212. You know, last week we saw

  213. the birth of Jacob and Esau.

  214. We're supposed to be moving on.

  215. But now Moses is bringing us back.

  216. We're going back in time

  217. to this story of Isaac

  218. journeying through the land.

  219. It's like Moses is telling us.

  220. This similar cycle of sin,

  221. opposition,

  222. trials,

  223. problems,

  224. problems,

  225. problems that happened with Abraham

  226. that's carrying on here with Isaac.

  227. So we can probably safely assume

  228. that's going to keep happening with Jacob

  229. and on and on and on down the line

  230. all the way to you, Christian.

  231. We see here in verse 1,

  232. a famine in the land

  233. forces Isaac to relocate,

  234. just like with Abraham in chapter 12

  235. where a famine forced Abraham

  236. to sojourn in Egypt.

  237. So here,

  238. this repetition,

  239. a famine forces Isaac to relocate

  240. to Gerar in the Negev.

  241. Here a whole generation later,

  242. not much has really changed,

  243. has it?

  244. The land is still rough.

  245. The terrain is still harsh.

  246. There's still famine.

  247. And now Isaac,

  248. like Abraham before him,

  249. he's still a sojourner.

  250. He's still living in tents.

  251. He has no permanent dwelling

  252. here in the land

  253. that God's promised would be his.

  254. I think it's clear to us

  255. that yes,

  256. God has promised this,

  257. but the realization of his promise

  258. is yet to come.

  259. It's not immediate.

  260. It's not instant gratification.

  261. There's a delay here

  262. where God's people

  263. must live by faith

  264. in the promises of God.

  265. So this famine

  266. has forced Isaac

  267. to pick up and relocate.

  268. He goes down to Gerar,

  269. and here he encounters Abimelech.

  270. Now,

  271. I don't know if this is the same Abimelech

  272. that Abraham dealt with

  273. in chapter 20

  274. when he went down to Gerar or not.

  275. It could be,

  276. but not necessarily.

  277. That name Abimelech

  278. is actually a title.

  279. It means son of the king.

  280. And so while it could be the same guy,

  281. it could also just be another guy

  282. in the same position.

  283. That's what I tend to think.

  284. But regardless,

  285. Isaac goes down

  286. to the king of the land,

  287. but as he goes down

  288. into enemy territory,

  289. as he goes wandering

  290. through the desert,

  291. as he walks in the middle of famine,

  292. look what happens.

  293. He encounters the true king.

  294. The Lord speaks to Isaac.

  295. And more than that,

  296. verse 2,

  297. it says that the Lord

  298. appears to Isaac.

  299. And this is the same language

  300. that we see other places

  301. where this is a physical,

  302. visible manifestation

  303. of the presence of God.

  304. It's what we call a theophany.

  305. God appears in visible form

  306. to come and speak with Isaac.

  307. And what does he say?

  308. Do not go down to Egypt.

  309. Dwell in the land

  310. of which I will tell you.

  311. Sojourn in this land.

  312. You know,

  313. that might not have been

  314. what Isaac wanted to hear.

  315. Don't go down to Egypt

  316. where it's lush

  317. and plentiful

  318. and where the crops are growing

  319. and where there's plenty of water.

  320. keep wandering,

  321. keep living as a sojourner,

  322. stay right here

  323. in the middle of this empty desert,

  324. stay right here

  325. in the middle of this famine.

  326. That's probably not the counsel

  327. that he wanted to hear,

  328. don't you think?

  329. You and I,

  330. it's human nature

  331. that we want to seek out

  332. ease and comfort,

  333. don't we?

  334. I mean,

  335. naturally,

  336. when we're in the middle

  337. of some sort of trial,

  338. we want God to lead us

  339. out of that

  340. as quickly as possible.

  341. But sometimes,

  342. we should recognize,

  343. even in the midst

  344. of incredible difficulty,

  345. sometimes,

  346. we are exactly

  347. where God wants us to be.

  348. We may not want to hear that,

  349. but listen to the assurance

  350. that God gives him here.

  351. He says,

  352. Isaac,

  353. I will be with you.

  354. This Emmanuel promise,

  355. promise God with us,

  356. and I will bless you.

  357. For to you and to your offspring,

  358. I will give all these lands.

  359. I will establish the oath

  360. that I gave to Abraham,

  361. your father.

  362. I will multiply your offspring

  363. as the stars of heaven.

  364. I will give your offspring

  365. all these lands,

  366. and in your offspring,

  367. all the nations of the earth

  368. shall be blessed,

  369. because Abraham obeyed my voice

  370. and kept my charge,

  371. my commandments,

  372. my statutes,

  373. and my laws.

  374. It's as if to say,

  375. Isaac,

  376. I know your circumstances

  377. are difficult.

  378. Isaac,

  379. I know that you're

  380. in the middle of a famine.

  381. Isaac,

  382. I know that my promises

  383. have been slow in your eyes

  384. to come to pass,

  385. but my promises

  386. have not changed,

  387. and I will do it

  388. in my time.

  389. Do these promises

  390. sound familiar to you?

  391. This is an echo,

  392. almost exactly an echo,

  393. this rhyme,

  394. this repetition.

  395. The Lord is reaffirming

  396. the promises

  397. that He made to Abraham.

  398. Only now,

  399. it's to Isaac

  400. a generation later.

  401. Only did you notice

  402. a slight difference

  403. in the promises?

  404. Verse 3,

  405. He says,

  406. to your offspring,

  407. I will give

  408. all these lands.

  409. as small hint

  410. that maybe,

  411. maybe Canaan

  412. is not the only

  413. piece of land

  414. that's promised

  415. to God's people.

  416. In fact,

  417. as we see later on

  418. and we flip over

  419. to the pages

  420. of the New Testament,

  421. Romans chapter 4

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  422. tells us clearly

  423. that Abraham

  424. and his offspring,

  425. that is,

  426. all those who share

  427. the faith of Abraham,

  428. will be heirs

  429. not just of Canaan,

  430. but heirs

  431. of the whole world.

  432. All these lands

  433. will come

  434. to the one

  435. true people

  436. of God.

  437. All those who trust

  438. in the promises of God.

  439. Or as we can say

  440. on this side of the cross,

  441. all those who trust

  442. in the promises

  443. of God

  444. in Christ.

  445. Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  446. says that

  447. by faith,

  448. that is,

  449. faith in the promises

  450. of God,

  451. by faith,

  452. Abraham obeyed

  453. when he was called

  454. to go out to a place

  455. that he was to receive

  456. as an inheritance.

  457. And he went out

  458. not knowing

  459. where he was going.

  460. And by faith,

  461. he went to live

  462. in the land of promise

  463. as in a foreign land,

  464. living in tents

  465. with Isaac

  466. and Jacob,

  467. heirs with him

  468. of the same promise.

  469. Why?

  470. For he was looking

  471. forward to the city

  472. that has foundations,

  473. whose designer

  474. and builder

  475. is God.

  476. See,

  477. Abraham

  478. and Isaac

  479. were content

  480. to live

  481. in harsh circumstances,

  482. to live

  483. as sojourners,

  484. to live

  485. in the midst

  486. of great difficulty,

  487. to live

  488. in enemy territory.

  489. Why?

  490. Because they trusted

  491. by faith

  492. that God

  493. had promised

  494. a better

  495. eternal home

  496. for them.

  497. Not just Canaan,

  498. the whole world

  499. renewed.

  500. the new heavens

  501. and the new earth.

  502. All creation

  503. freed from the curse

  504. of sin.

  505. A world where

  506. there is no famine.

  507. Can you imagine?

  508. A world where

  509. there is no sin.

  510. A world where

  511. we no longer

  512. move from place

  513. to place,

  514. dwelling in temporary

  515. shelters,

  516. but a place

  517. where we are

  518. finally home.

  519. Church,

  520. do you realize

  521. in Christ

  522. we share this promise?

  523. It's God's promises

  524. that carry us

  525. through our time

  526. here as an exile.

  527. We,

  528. like Isaac,

  529. are sojourners

  530. in a land

  531. that belongs to us,

  532. that's been promised

  533. to us,

  534. but not quite yet.

  535. We are exiles

  536. and strangers

  537. in a land

  538. that we know

  539. will one day

  540. be full of beauty

  541. and free from the effects

  542. of the curse of sin,

  543. but not quite yet.

  544. Right now

  545. it's prone

  546. to all sorts

  547. of famine

  548. and danger

  549. and harsh conditions,

  550. but one day

  551. soon

  552. and very soon

  553. God has promised us

  554. Christ will come,

  555. Jesus will return,

  556. and all the world

  557. will be remade.

  558. All the world

  559. will be freed

  560. from sin

  561. and it will all

  562. be ours.

  563. All who have

  564. faith in Christ

  565. share this

  566. glorious promise.

  567. The time is coming

  568. when we will

  569. inherit the land,

  570. but in the meantime,

  571. like Isaac,

  572. we face all sorts

  573. of problems,

  574. don't we?

  575. Let's look here

  576. a second

  577. to the problems

  578. that we face.

  579. While we wonder

  580. here as sojourners

  581. and exiles

  582. waiting for these

  583. promises to come

  584. to pass,

  585. we face all sorts

  586. of problems,

  587. don't we?

  588. Amen?

  589. I'm glad I'm not

  590. the only one.

  591. And these problems

  592. come at us

  593. from two main

  594. directions.

  595. we face both

  596. internal problems

  597. and we face

  598. external problems.

  599. And we see both

  600. of them here

  601. in the passage.

  602. Look with me

  603. starting in verse 7.

  604. And here we see

  605. some of the internal

  606. problems that

  607. Isaac's facing.

  608. Isaac shows up

  609. and Gerar

  610. and verse 7

  611. says that the men

  612. of the place

  613. begin asking

  614. about his wife,

  615. Rebecca,

  616. because apparently

  617. she's very beautiful

  618. in appearance.

  619. And so what

  620. does he do?

  621. Like Abraham

  622. before him,

  623. he lies.

  624. He tells everybody

  625. that his wife

  626. is his sister.

  627. Why?

  628. To save his own

  629. skin.

  630. Right?

  631. To protect himself

  632. so his own life

  633. would be spared.

  634. I mean,

  635. at least when Abraham

  636. did it,

  637. it was kind of

  638. a half lie,

  639. right?

  640. Sarah was his

  641. half sister.

  642. I know that's weird.

  643. Times were different

  644. back then.

  645. But here,

  646. I mean,

  647. it's just a complete

  648. full out,

  649. flat out lie.

  650. Didn't God

  651. just promise

  652. like two seconds

  653. ago?

  654. Didn't God

  655. just promise

  656. that I will

  657. give you

  658. as numerous

  659. offspring

  660. as the stars

  661. in the sky?

  662. Didn't he

  663. just promise

  664. that through

  665. your offspring

  666. all the earth

  667. will be blessed?

  668. But here,

  669. Isaac,

  670. just like Abraham

  671. before him,

  672. he shows this

  673. deep disregard

  674. for the faithfulness

  675. of God.

  676. And like Abraham

  677. before him,

  678. he takes matters

  679. into his own hands

  680. and this hero

  681. of the faith

  682. lies to preserve

  683. his own life.

  684. Now,

  685. let me chase a quick

  686. rabbit trail here.

  687. This is one reason

  688. why we as good

  689. Protestants

  690. don't venerate

  691. the saints

  692. like our Catholic

  693. friends do,

  694. right?

  695. You know what I mean

  696. by veneration

  697. of the saints.

  698. Our Catholic

  699. friends,

  700. they honor the saints,

  701. they want to be

  702. reminded of their lives

  703. and so they'll put up

  704. images of them

  705. throughout their churches,

  706. they'll give lessons

  707. from their lives,

  708. all that is fine enough.

  709. But then they take it

  710. one step further

  711. and they will pray

  712. to these men

  713. and seek their intercession

  714. that these men

  715. might pray on their

  716. behalf to the Lord.

  717. They seek their blessing

  718. that some of their

  719. righteousness

  720. might be overflowed

  721. and credited

  722. to their account.

  723. So they lift

  724. these men up

  725. to this place

  726. of reverence

  727. and honor

  728. but it seems

  729. to me

  730. that they miss

  731. the fact

  732. that even

  733. these great heroes

  734. of the faith

  735. like you and I

  736. are sinners

  737. in need

  738. of a Savior.

  739. You know,

  740. maybe one reason

  741. why Moses

  742. goes back in time

  743. to give us this story

  744. is to make sure

  745. we don't miss

  746. the fact

  747. that Isaac

  748. like you and I

  749. is a sinner.

  750. Just like Abraham

  751. before him

  752. was a sinner.

  753. We may not have

  754. that problem

  755. of veneration

  756. of the saints

  757. but I wonder,

  758. you know,

  759. church,

  760. your favorite

  761. Bible teacher

  762. and the one

  763. whose Bible study

  764. you buy right

  765. when it comes out

  766. the one

  767. whose sermon

  768. podcast

  769. you're quick

  770. to soak up

  771. the pastor,

  772. the preacher,

  773. the teacher

  774. that's ministry

  775. has just blessed

  776. you tremendously.

  777. Do we remember

  778. that they too

  779. are a sinner

  780. in need

  781. of a Savior?

  782. Isaac tells us

  783. a lie here

  784. and proves himself

  785. to be a sinner

  786. and verse 8

  787. says that

  788. they were actually

  789. able to keep this

  790. up for a long time.

  791. They lived in the land

  792. for a long time

  793. until Abimelech

  794. looks out of the window

  795. and he sees Isaac

  796. laughing with his wife

  797. except I think

  798. that's kind of

  799. an unclear translation.

  800. I don't know

  801. exactly what they

  802. were doing

  803. but it was enough

  804. that Abimelech

  805. saw it

  806. and he knew

  807. that that was

  808. not his sister.

  809. He knew instantly

  810. that he had been

  811. lied to

  812. that they are

  813. in fact

  814. married

  815. and so this king

  816. calls him out

  817. and says

  818. what have you

  819. done to us?

  820. You've put us

  821. in the position

  822. where anyone

  823. here could have

  824. lain with your wife

  825. and you would have

  826. brought this guilt

  827. upon us.

  828. Isaac has put

  829. the king

  830. and his people

  831. in this position

  832. where even

  833. unknowingly

  834. they could have

  835. done something sinful

  836. and broken

  837. the seventh commandment

  838. and committed adultery.

  839. Isn't it shocking

  840. to you

  841. that this pagan

  842. king seems

  843. more sensitive

  844. to righteousness

  845. than Isaac?

  846. He seems

  847. a little bit

  848. more sensitive

  849. to the dangers

  850. of sin

  851. than this father

  852. of the faith?

  853. Here yet again

  854. just as we saw

  855. with Abraham

  856. this pagan king

  857. looks more righteous

  858. than this chosen

  859. vessel of the Lord.

  860. What a shame.

  861. Isaac's in a world

  862. of trouble

  863. isn't he?

  864. But ask yourself

  865. whose fault

  866. is that?

  867. This whole situation

  868. this whole issue

  869. here is

  870. entirely

  871. of Isaac's

  872. own doing

  873. at the core

  874. of this problem

  875. is Isaac's

  876. own sin

  877. and often

  878. church

  879. that is the

  880. first layer

  881. of problems

  882. that we have

  883. to deal with.

  884. I know

  885. you go through

  886. problems

  887. and you experience

  888. trials

  889. we all do

  890. but when you

  891. face these trials

  892. you face

  893. these problems

  894. you walk

  895. through these

  896. issues in your life

  897. how often

  898. do you stop

  899. and ask

  900. how much

  901. of this problem

  902. is because of me?

  903. Yes

  904. of course

  905. we face

  906. an enemy

  907. we have

  908. external issues

  909. we live

  910. in a fallen world

  911. we're going to get

  912. to all that

  913. in a minute

  914. but before

  915. we point

  916. the finger

  917. outward

  918. and go

  919. and blame

  920. others

  921. even go

  922. and blame

  923. the devil

  924. himself

  925. we need

  926. to stop

  927. and ask

  928. how much

  929. of my

  930. suffering

  931. is tied

  932. to my

  933. own

  934. sinful

  935. choices

  936. and Peter

  937. tells us

  938. we just read

  939. in 1 Peter

  940. that we

  941. shouldn't be

  942. surprised

  943. when the fiery

  944. trials come

  945. upon you

  946. Christian

  947. you will

  948. encounter

  949. suffering

  950. but then he

  951. goes on

  952. to say

  953. but don't

  954. suffer

  955. as a

  956. murderer

  957. and don't

  958. suffer

  959. as a

  960. thief

  961. and don't

  962. suffer

  963. as an

  964. evildoer

  965. don't

  966. suffer

  967. as a

  968. meddler

  969. in other

  970. words

  971. you are

  972. going

  973. to

  974. suffer

  975. but don't

  976. bring it

  977. upon yourself

  978. because of

  979. your own

  980. sin

  981. but of course

  982. we also see

  983. here Isaac

  984. faces also

  985. great external

  986. problems

  987. as well

  988. just as we

  989. do

  990. church

  991. look there

  992. starting

  993. in verse 12

  994. it says

  995. after all

  996. this

  997. apparently

  998. despite

  999. Isaac's

  1000. sin

  1001. God

  1002. continues

  1003. to bless

  1004. Isaac

  1005. doesn't he

  1006. and despite

  1007. the famine

  1008. in the land

  1009. it says

  1010. Isaac

  1011. sowed

  1012. in that

  1013. land

  1014. and he

  1015. reaped

  1016. in the

  1017. same

  1018. year

  1019. a hundred

  1020. fold

  1021. I don't

  1022. know much

  1023. about

  1024. agriculture

  1025. or farming

  1026. but that

  1027. seems pretty

  1028. impressive to

  1029. me

  1030. to sow

  1031. seed

  1032. in the

  1033. midst

  1034. of a

  1035. famine

  1036. and in

  1037. the same

  1038. year

  1039. to reap

  1040. a hundred

  1041. fold

  1042. I mean

  1043. he is

  1044. flourishing

  1045. there

  1046. he's

  1047. reaping

  1048. an

  1049. incredible

  1050. harvest

  1051. Isaac

  1052. gets a

  1053. taste

  1054. here

  1055. of this

  1056. future

  1057. blessing

  1058. that God

  1059. has

  1060. promised

  1061. he becomes

  1062. rich

  1063. he gains

  1064. flocks

  1065. he gains

  1066. herds

  1067. he gains

  1068. servants

  1069. and with

  1070. all of that

  1071. guess what

  1072. he also

  1073. gains

  1074. enemies

  1075. the

  1076. Philistines

  1077. they see

  1078. his success

  1079. and they

  1080. see the

  1081. blessing of

  1082. God

  1083. in his

  1084. life

  1085. and it

  1086. says that

  1087. they envied

  1088. him

  1089. Abimelech

  1090. the king

  1091. he doesn't

  1092. like how

  1093. strong

  1094. and prosperous

  1095. and successful

  1096. Isaac

  1097. is becoming

  1098. he's a

  1099. threat

  1100. now

  1101. so he

  1102. tells him

  1103. to get

  1104. out

  1105. and the

  1106. Philistines

  1107. go a step

  1108. further than

  1109. that don't

  1110. they

  1111. they go

  1112. and they

  1113. get a bunch

  1114. of dirt

  1115. and they

  1116. fill up

  1117. all the

  1118. wells

  1119. that Abraham

  1120. dug

  1121. they fill

  1122. them up

  1123. with dirt

  1124. and this

  1125. is not a

  1126. subtle

  1127. message

  1128. is it

  1129. the message

  1130. is we

  1131. want to

  1132. snuff

  1133. you out

  1134. you don't

  1135. belong

  1136. here in

  1137. this land

  1138. look at what

  1139. Isaac does

  1140. verse 17

  1141. it says

  1142. Isaac

  1143. leaves

  1144. he goes

  1145. to the

  1146. valley

  1147. of Gerar

  1148. and what

  1149. does he

  1150. do

  1151. he digs

  1152. up those

  1153. same

  1154. wells

  1155. again

  1156. those same

  1157. wells

  1158. that Abraham

  1159. his father

  1160. dug

  1161. and he

  1162. gives them

  1163. names

  1164. not new

  1165. names

  1166. he gives

  1167. them the

  1168. same old

  1169. names

  1170. that Abraham

  1171. his father

  1172. gave him

  1173. what's he

  1174. doing

  1175. it's almost

  1176. like he's

  1177. saying

  1178. you can

  1179. try to

  1180. stop

  1181. us

  1182. but God

  1183. has promised

  1184. me this

  1185. land

  1186. and so

  1187. yeah

  1188. you can

  1189. try to

  1190. snuff

  1191. me

  1192. out

  1193. but it's

  1194. not

  1195. going to

  1196. work

  1197. what is

  1198. he doing

  1199. he faces

  1200. this external

  1201. opposition

  1202. how

  1203. by

  1204. clinging

  1205. to

  1206. and living

  1207. in light

  1208. of

  1209. the promises

  1210. of God

  1211. verse 19

  1212. says

  1213. they dug

  1214. in the

  1215. valley

  1216. and guess

  1217. what

  1218. they find

  1219. water

  1220. God

  1221. here even

  1222. in the midst

  1223. of famine

  1224. and here

  1225. even

  1226. with all

  1227. the Philistines

  1228. filling up

  1229. the wells

  1230. with dirt

  1231. and here

  1232. with the king

  1233. sending Isaac

  1234. out as a

  1235. wanderer

  1236. yet again

  1237. God

  1238. provides

  1239. this blessing

  1240. of water

  1241. and with it

  1242. yet again

  1243. there's an issue

  1244. the herdsmen

  1245. of Gerar

  1246. they contend

  1247. with Isaac's

  1248. herdsmen

  1249. and they say

  1250. this water

  1251. is ours

  1252. and so

  1253. what does

  1254. Isaac do

  1255. he names

  1256. that well

  1257. a sack

  1258. which means

  1259. contention

  1260. it's like

  1261. he's getting

  1262. used to this

  1263. by now

  1264. right

  1265. problems

  1266. and promises

  1267. problems

  1268. and promises

  1269. so what does

  1270. he do

  1271. he moves

  1272. on

  1273. he digs

  1274. another

  1275. well

  1276. and apparently

  1277. that well

  1278. also produces

  1279. water

  1280. here's some

  1281. blessing

  1282. and guess

  1283. what

  1284. there's another

  1285. fight

  1286. and so he

  1287. names that

  1288. well

  1289. Sitna

  1290. which means

  1291. enmity

  1292. and so what

  1293. does he do

  1294. it's probably

  1295. time to give up

  1296. now right

  1297. probably time

  1298. just to

  1299. throw it

  1300. throw in the

  1301. towel

  1302. and move

  1303. on and be

  1304. done

  1305. no

  1306. Isaac moves

  1307. on and he

  1308. digs yet

  1309. another

  1310. well

  1311. and finally

  1312. at last

  1313. it says

  1314. there is

  1315. peace

  1316. so he calls

  1317. its name

  1318. Rehoboth

  1319. which means

  1320. room

  1321. saying

  1322. the Lord

  1323. has made

  1324. room

  1325. for us

  1326. and we

  1327. shall be

  1328. fruitful

  1329. in the land

  1330. church

  1331. do you see

  1332. this beautiful

  1333. picture of the

  1334. Christian experience

  1335. do you see

  1336. how

  1337. how this

  1338. rhymes

  1339. with our

  1340. experience

  1341. in Christ

  1342. the Lord

  1343. has told

  1344. us

  1345. I will put

  1346. enmity

  1347. between you

  1348. and the woman

  1349. Genesis 3

  1350. between your

  1351. seed

  1352. and her

  1353. seed

  1354. ultimately

  1355. this is

  1356. enmity

  1357. it's contention

  1358. between Christ

  1359. and the enemy

  1360. Satan

  1361. but it's also

  1362. enmity

  1363. it's contention

  1364. between the

  1365. offspring of

  1366. Satan

  1367. and the

  1368. offspring of

  1369. God

  1370. and Christ

  1371. in every

  1372. age

  1373. and in

  1374. every

  1375. place

  1376. God's

  1377. people

  1378. are at

  1379. war

  1380. contending

  1381. with the

  1382. forces

  1383. of evil

  1384. we do

  1385. not wrestle

  1386. against flesh

  1387. and blood

  1388. but against

  1389. the rulers

  1390. against the

  1391. authorities

  1392. against the

  1393. cosmic powers

  1394. over this

  1395. present darkness

  1396. against the

  1397. spiritual forces

  1398. of evil

  1399. in the heavenly

  1400. places

  1401. we face

  1402. an enemy

  1403. that prowls

  1404. around like a

  1405. roaring

  1406. lion

  1407. seeking

  1408. someone to

  1409. devour

  1410. we shouldn't

  1411. be surprised

  1412. then church

  1413. when trials

  1414. come our way

  1415. if you want

  1416. to live a life

  1417. of faithfulness

  1418. to Christ

  1419. then church

  1420. you can expect

  1421. the enemy

  1422. will want to

  1423. snuff you out

  1424. stop you

  1425. from doing so

  1426. but

  1427. those who

  1428. persevere

  1429. in Christ

  1430. like Isaac

  1431. eventually

  1432. will

  1433. overcome

  1434. come

  1435. the trial

  1436. is not

  1437. forever

  1438. the good

  1439. news is

  1440. the opposition

  1441. is not

  1442. forever

  1443. the good

  1444. news is

  1445. eventually

  1446. all who

  1447. persevere

  1448. will know

  1449. the full

  1450. blessing

  1451. of knowing

  1452. the Lord

  1453. eventually

  1454. those who

  1455. persevere

  1456. will know

  1457. the peace

  1458. that God

  1459. has promised

  1460. free from

  1461. our enemies

  1462. I wonder

  1463. what sort

  1464. of

  1465. opposition

  1466. faces

  1467. you

  1468. believer

  1469. what would

  1470. keep you

  1471. from prayer

  1472. this week

  1473. what would

  1474. keep you

  1475. from spending

  1476. time in the

  1477. word

  1478. this week

  1479. what would

  1480. prevent you

  1481. from sharing

  1482. the gospel

  1483. with a friend

  1484. this week

  1485. a neighbor

  1486. this week

  1487. a family

  1488. member

  1489. this week

  1490. what would

  1491. prevent you

  1492. from coming

  1493. and gathering

  1494. with God's

  1495. people for

  1496. worship

  1497. next Sunday

  1498. what would

  1499. prevent you

  1500. from spending

  1501. time building

  1502. up one another

  1503. in conversations

  1504. about the Lord

  1505. and in discipleship

  1506. this week

  1507. the enemy

  1508. would love

  1509. to fill those

  1510. wells up

  1511. with dirt

  1512. we face

  1513. these issues

  1514. these trials

  1515. by like

  1516. Isaac

  1517. clinging

  1518. to the

  1519. promises

  1520. of God

  1521. for us

  1522. in Christ

  1523. look there

  1524. with me

  1525. to verse 26

  1526. after all

  1527. of this

  1528. all of these

  1529. problems

  1530. we see the

  1531. Lord appears

  1532. yet again

  1533. to Isaac

  1534. and yet again

  1535. he speaks

  1536. and yet again

  1537. he reminds

  1538. him and us

  1539. of his promises

  1540. he says

  1541. I am the

  1542. God

  1543. of your

  1544. father

  1545. Abraham

  1546. fear not

  1547. I am

  1548. with you

  1549. I will

  1550. bless you

  1551. I will

  1552. multiply

  1553. your offspring

  1554. for my

  1555. servant

  1556. Abraham's

  1557. sake

  1558. how does

  1559. Isaac

  1560. respond

  1561. he says

  1562. he builds

  1563. an altar

  1564. and he

  1565. worships

  1566. the Lord

  1567. and he

  1568. pitches

  1569. his tent

  1570. there in

  1571. the land

  1572. and he

  1573. digs

  1574. another

  1575. well

  1576. this passage

  1577. ends

  1578. with

  1579. another

  1580. reminder

  1581. of these

  1582. unshakable

  1583. promises

  1584. of God

  1585. much has

  1586. changed

  1587. since the

  1588. beginning

  1589. of the

  1590. chapter

  1591. Isaac's

  1592. been through

  1593. a lot

  1594. but the

  1595. promises

  1596. of God

  1597. have not

  1598. changed

  1599. his

  1600. faithfulness

  1601. has not

  1602. changed

  1603. and if you

  1604. wondered

  1605. well what about

  1606. his enemies

  1607. are they gone

  1608. yet

  1609. no

  1610. no they're

  1611. not

  1612. but we get

  1613. here at the

  1614. end of this

  1615. passage

  1616. some resolution

  1617. here starting

  1618. in verse 26

  1619. don't we

  1620. this passage

  1621. ends

  1622. with a

  1623. reversal

  1624. and with

  1625. a

  1626. reminder

  1627. as for

  1628. Abimelech

  1629. he comes

  1630. to Isaac

  1631. with his

  1632. advisor

  1633. and with

  1634. his military

  1635. commander

  1636. and Isaac

  1637. at this

  1638. point

  1639. he puffs

  1640. out his

  1641. chest

  1642. a little

  1643. bit

  1644. doesn't

  1645. he

  1646. he's

  1647. like

  1648. what

  1649. are you

  1650. doing

  1651. here

  1652. don't

  1653. you

  1654. hate

  1655. me

  1656. you

  1657. sent

  1658. me

  1659. away

  1660. and he's

  1661. right

  1662. isn't

  1663. he

  1664. but look

  1665. how they

  1666. respond

  1667. they say

  1668. we see

  1669. plainly

  1670. that the

  1671. Lord

  1672. has been

  1673. with you

  1674. we see

  1675. plainly

  1676. that the

  1677. Lord

  1678. has been

  1679. with you

  1680. make a

  1681. covenant

  1682. with us

  1683. that you'll

  1684. do us

  1685. no harm

  1686. just as

  1687. just as

  1688. we've done

  1689. you no

  1690. harm

  1691. and have

  1692. done

  1693. nothing

  1694. but good

  1695. to you

  1696. and have

  1697. sent you

  1698. away

  1699. in peace

  1700. that's

  1701. not exactly

  1702. true

  1703. is it

  1704. but Isaac

  1705. doesn't make

  1706. an issue

  1707. of it

  1708. God

  1709. is giving

  1710. him

  1711. peace

  1712. in the

  1713. land

  1714. he is

  1715. despite

  1716. all the

  1717. apparent

  1718. issues

  1719. God

  1720. is making

  1721. a way

  1722. here

  1723. to

  1724. fulfill

  1725. his

  1726. promises

  1727. it's a

  1728. reversal

  1729. in Isaac's

  1730. favor

  1731. and so

  1732. he makes

  1733. a feast

  1734. they eat

  1735. and they

  1736. drink

  1737. the next

  1738. morning

  1739. they go

  1740. out

  1741. in peace

  1742. and that

  1743. same

  1744. day

  1745. Isaac's

  1746. servants

  1747. come

  1748. and tell

  1749. him

  1750. they've

  1751. dug

  1752. a well

  1753. and he

  1754. calls

  1755. it

  1756. Sheba

  1757. which

  1758. means

  1759. oh

  1760. there's

  1761. a

  1762. complete

  1763. reversal

  1764. in

  1765. Isaac's

  1766. favor

  1767. it

  1768. seems

  1769. finally

  1770. like

  1771. everything's

  1772. going to

  1773. be okay

  1774. with

  1775. Isaac

  1776. doesn't

  1777. it

  1778. except

  1779. we know

  1780. better

  1781. we get

  1782. snapped

  1783. back to

  1784. the present

  1785. here

  1786. in verse

  1787. 34

  1788. and we're

  1789. reminded

  1790. a generation

  1791. later

  1792. problems

  1793. still

  1794. remain

  1795. we still

  1796. have

  1797. these issues

  1798. Esau

  1799. is marrying

  1800. Hittite women

  1801. he's making

  1802. life bitter

  1803. for Isaac

  1804. and for

  1805. Rebecca

  1806. the promises

  1807. remain

  1808. but so

  1809. do

  1810. the problems

  1811. we get a

  1812. small taste

  1813. of blessing

  1814. but it's

  1815. always mixed

  1816. up with

  1817. all of

  1818. these

  1819. issues

  1820. and this

  1821. is exactly

  1822. how it is

  1823. with us

  1824. in Christ

  1825. until he

  1826. comes

  1827. isn't it

  1828. church

  1829. John Calvin

  1830. says something

  1831. interesting about

  1832. this passage

  1833. he says

  1834. that

  1835. this history

  1836. teaches us

  1837. that the

  1838. blessings

  1839. of God

  1840. which pertain

  1841. to the present

  1842. earthly life

  1843. are never

  1844. pure and

  1845. perfect

  1846. but are

  1847. always mixed

  1848. with some

  1849. troubles

  1850. is that true

  1851. with your

  1852. experience

  1853. blessings

  1854. in this

  1855. life

  1856. are always

  1857. mixed up

  1858. with trial

  1859. and problems

  1860. children are a

  1861. blessing from

  1862. the Lord

  1863. but that

  1864. blessing is not

  1865. without trial

  1866. money

  1867. is a blessing

  1868. from the Lord

  1869. but that

  1870. blessing is not

  1871. without trial

  1872. homes

  1873. are a blessing

  1874. from the Lord

  1875. but you get

  1876. HOAs that make

  1877. your life

  1878. miserable

  1879. blessing

  1880. often comes

  1881. with difficulty

  1882. why

  1883. he says

  1884. these blessings

  1885. are mixed

  1886. with troubles

  1887. lest quiet

  1888. and indulgence

  1889. should render

  1890. us negligent

  1891. it's to remind

  1892. us

  1893. church

  1894. that like

  1895. Isaac

  1896. we are not

  1897. yet

  1898. home

  1899. we must

  1900. persevere

  1901. to the true

  1902. blessing

  1903. that remains

  1904. ahead of us

  1905. for all

  1906. who know

  1907. the Lord

  1908. Jesus Christ

  1909. by faith

  1910. a true

  1911. unbothered

  1912. undiluted

  1913. unmixed

  1914. blessing

  1915. is yet

  1916. ahead of us

  1917. church

  1918. but until

  1919. then

  1920. we are

  1921. sojourners

  1922. the problems

  1923. remain

  1924. and so do

  1925. the promises

  1926. church

  1927. until he

  1928. comes

  1929. if you

  1930. wrestle with

  1931. patterns of sin

  1932. in your own

  1933. life

  1934. take heart

  1935. so did

  1936. Abraham

  1937. and so

  1938. did

  1939. Isaac

  1940. and so

  1941. does every

  1942. single pastor

  1943. you look up

  1944. to

  1945. so do I

  1946. and so

  1947. does every

  1948. hero of the

  1949. faith

  1950. everyone

  1951. but Jesus

  1952. who was

  1953. tempted and

  1954. tried in

  1955. every way

  1956. as we

  1957. are yet

  1958. without

  1959. sin

  1960. the only

  1961. hope for

  1962. sinners

  1963. like us

  1964. is that

  1965. Christ

  1966. Jesus

  1967. has come

  1968. to live

  1969. and to die

  1970. and to rise

  1971. for us

  1972. so that

  1973. any

  1974. sinner

  1975. who

  1976. trust

  1977. in him

  1978. will be

  1979. forgiven

  1980. of their

  1981. sin

  1982. and made

  1983. heirs

  1984. of all

  1985. these

  1986. wonderful

  1987. promises

  1988. of God

  1989. and if

  1990. you face

  1991. opposition

  1992. in this

  1993. life

  1994. as the

  1995. church

  1996. certainly

  1997. does

  1998. then

  1999. friend

  2000. take

  2001. heart

  2002. so has

  2003. every

  2004. part

  2005. and member

  2006. of the

  2007. body

  2008. of Christ

  2009. throughout

  2010. all the

  2011. ages

  2012. from

  2013. Abraham

  2014. and Isaac

  2015. and to

  2016. Paul

  2017. and to

  2018. Peter

  2019. and to

  2020. every

  2021. believer

  2022. everywhere

  2023. but church

  2024. we face

  2025. this

  2026. opposition

  2027. with

  2028. confidence

  2029. that

  2030. Christ

  2031. has

  2032. already

  2033. won

  2034. Christ

  2035. has

  2036. overcome

  2037. the

  2038. world

  2039. Christ

  2040. has

  2041. defeated

  2042. every

  2043. sin

  2044. Christ

  2045. has

  2046. defeated

  2047. our

  2048. enemy

  2049. and

  2050. one

  2051. day

  2052. all

  2053. the

  2054. world

  2055. will

  2056. be

  2057. ours

  2058. free

  2059. from

  2060. every

  2061. hand

  2062. of

  2063. opposition

  2064. what a

  2065. hope

  2066. until

  2067. then

  2068. we are

  2069. sojourners

  2070. and

  2071. exiles

  2072. wanderers

  2073. and

  2074. pilgrims

  2075. a

  2076. letter

  2077. to

  2078. Diognetus

  2079. written

  2080. at the

  2081. end

  2082. of

  2083. the

  2084. fourth

  2085. century

  2086. he's

  2087. commenting

  2088. on

  2089. this

  2090. he says

  2091. Christians

  2092. are

  2093. indistinguishable

  2094. from other

  2095. men

  2096. either by

  2097. nationality

  2098. or language

  2099. or customs

  2100. They do

  2101. not

  2102. inhabit

  2103. separate

  2104. cities

  2105. of their

  2106. own

  2107. or speak

  2108. a strange

  2109. dialect

  2110. or follow

  2111. some outlandish

  2112. way of

  2113. life

  2114. with regard

  2115. to dress

  2116. and food

  2117. and manner

  2118. of life

  2119. in general

  2120. they follow

  2121. the customs

  2122. of whatever

  2123. city

  2124. they happen

  2125. to be

  2126. living in

  2127. whether it's

  2128. Greek

  2129. or foreign

  2130. and yet

  2131. there is

  2132. something

  2133. extraordinary

  2134. about their

  2135. lives

  2136. they live

  2137. in their

  2138. own

  2139. countries

  2140. as though

  2141. they were

  2142. only

  2143. passing

  2144. through

  2145. and they

  2146. play their

  2147. full role

  2148. as citizens

  2149. but labor

  2150. under all

  2151. the disabilities

  2152. of aliens

  2153. any country

  2154. can be

  2155. their homeland

  2156. but for

  2157. them

  2158. their homeland

  2159. wherever it

  2160. may be

  2161. is as a

  2162. foreign

  2163. country

  2164. they pass

  2165. their days

  2166. upon earth

  2167. but they

  2168. are citizens

  2169. of heaven

  2170. church

  2171. we are

  2172. sojourners

  2173. passing

  2174. through

  2175. enduring

  2176. every trial

  2177. clinging

  2178. to the promises

  2179. of God

  2180. for us

  2181. in Christ

  2182. let's pray

  2183. father

  2184. we pray

  2185. that we

  2186. would

  2187. realize

  2188. this

  2189. identity

  2190. that we

  2191. would

  2192. realize

  2193. that we

  2194. are

  2195. not yet

  2196. home

  2197. that the

  2198. blessings

  2199. of this

  2200. life

  2201. are

  2202. partial

  2203. at best

  2204. that it's

  2205. always

  2206. full of

  2207. opposition

  2208. and trial

  2209. God

  2210. we pray

  2211. that we

  2212. would cling

  2213. to the

  2214. certainty

  2215. of your

  2216. promise

  2217. Lord

  2218. that there

  2219. is

  2220. hope

  2221. ahead

  2222. of us

  2223. God

  2224. that there

  2225. is

  2226. forgiveness

  2227. of sin

  2228. to be

  2229. had

  2230. right

  2231. now

  2232. by faith

  2233. in Christ

  2234. and there

  2235. is an

  2236. eternity

  2237. of

  2238. unmixed

  2239. blessing

  2240. ahead of

  2241. us

  2242. for those

  2243. that know

  2244. you

  2245. Lord

  2246. we pray

  2247. God

  2248. would you

  2249. lead us

  2250. to live

  2251. in light

  2252. of these

  2253. promises

  2254. we pray

  2255. in Jesus

  2256. name

  2257. Amen
