  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to the book of Acts.

  2. The book of Acts. We're pausing our series this morning.

  3. ! We're going through the book of Genesis regularly on Sunday mornings,

  4. but we're going to pause it just for one week this morning to spend time in Acts chapter 17,

    Acts 17:22–34

  5. verses 22 through 34.

  6. If you don't have your own Bible with you, that's okay.

  7. We provide them in the seat back there in front of you,

  8. and I would just encourage you to have a copy of God's Word open.

  9. And if you don't have a copy of God's Word at all,

  10. then please take that one home with you as our gift to you.

  11. We want to make sure that you have a copy of God's Word available to you.

  12. So the book of Acts, chapter 17, verses 22 through 34.

    Acts 17:22–34

  13. And when you've found that, let's stand this morning in honor of the reading of the Word of God.

  14. It says,

  15. So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said,

  16. Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious.

  17. Whereas I passed along and observed the objects of your worship,

  18. I found also an altar with this inscription,

  19. To the unknown God.

  20. What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.

  21. The God who made the world and everything in it,

  22. being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man,

  23. nor is he served by human hands as though he needed anything,

  24. since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.

  25. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth,

  26. having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place,

  27. that they should seek God,

  28. and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him.

  29. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us.

  30. For in him we live and move and have our being.

  31. As even some of your own poets have said,

  32. For we are indeed his offspring.

  33. Being then God's offspring,

  34. we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone,

  35. an image formed by the art and imagination of man.

  36. The times of ignorance God overlooked,

  37. But now he commands all people everywhere to repent,

  38. because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness

  39. by a man whom he has appointed.

  40. And of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.

  41. Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead,

  42. some mocked,

  43. but others said,

  44. We will hear you again about this.

  45. So Paul went out from their midst,

  46. but some men joined him and believed,

  47. among whom also were Dionysius, the Areopagot,

  48. and a woman named Damaris,

  49. and others with them.

  50. Father God,

  51. we praise you for the simple message of the gospel.

  52. And we praise you for the efforts of Paul to go to Athens

  53. and to proclaim this gospel message.

  54. We praise you that this gospel message is going forth throughout the world,

  55. even this very moment.

  56. And we pray your blessing on the preaching of the word.

  57. Would you make it clear to us?

  58. Would we respond to you in faith?

  59. We pray in Jesus' name.

  60. Amen.

  61. You may be seated.

  62. Imagine with me for a minute that you have come to a worship service.

  63. Not making you work too hard quite yet.

  64. You have come to this worship service gathering because,

  65. well, you're not exactly sure why you're here.

  66. Maybe a friend has invited you.

  67. Maybe you saw a Facebook advertisement.

  68. Maybe you were just driving by,

  69. and you thought that it would be a good idea just to stop on in.

  70. And you're not really sure what to believe about all of it.

  71. You think that probably maybe you believe in some sort of spiritual something out there,

  72. but you're not quite exactly sure what.

  73. I mean, to be honest,

  74. you're a little bit confused.

  75. And maybe you pass by five or six other places of worship on the way here.

  76. And so it seems like there's so many different opinions out there on which God is the right one.

  77. How does He desire to be worshipped?

  78. How would you even know?

  79. And maybe it doesn't even matter.

  80. You're here.

  81. You're doing your best.

  82. And you feel like it's probably wise just in case.

  83. Make sure you have God or the gods,

  84. whoever it may be,

  85. in your corner.

  86. And so you go.

  87. You participate.

  88. You sing the songs.

  89. It feels good to be here.

  90. You enjoy hearing the speaker talk as long as he doesn't go too long.

  91. If you come on a special occasion,

  92. you may even get a meal out of it.

  93. Who knows?

  94. But if you're honest,

  95. you don't really have a clue what's going on.

  96. It all seems a little bit strange and a little bit complicated.

  97. You're not quite sure where you stand.

  98. And it would be nice if somebody would just stand up and make it all plain and simple.

  99. I can almost guarantee that this imaginary scenario is not so imaginary in many churches throughout the country this morning.

  100. And in fact, it may not be so imaginary for some of you.

  101. The truth is that we live in an age of great religious confusion.

  102. People don't know who to worship or how to worship or why to worship.

  103. If they ought to worship at all, it's all just a little bit confusing.

  104. But it's not just our age.

  105. What we see in our passage this morning is that this type of religious confusion is nothing new at all, is it?

  106. In fact, we see it all the way back here in the first century in the book of Acts in Athens, Greece.

  107. Here in the book of Acts, the apostle Paul is journeying throughout the ancient world,

  108. proclaiming the message of the gospel.

  109. And he's come here to Athens, Greece.

  110. And what he sees when he gets there is all sorts of religious confusion and uncertainty.

  111. It's chaos.

  112. And so what does Paul do?

  113. Paul stands up here in our passage and he tries to very simply, very clearly clear up all of this religious confusion.

  114. And what is the message that he brings to them?

  115. What does he say?

  116. He gives them the simple message of the gospel.

  117. His goal and my goal for us this morning is to make sure that all of us have heard the simple message of the gospel.

  118. We want to make certain that you have heard the good news.

  119. And so we see it here in our passage in four parts this morning.

  120. Four parts.

  121. The gospel is a message about God.

  122. It is a message about man.

  123. It is a message about Christ.

  124. And it is a message that demands a response.

  125. Let's take a look here at each part.

  126. First, we see the gospel is a message about God.

  127. Look there with me starting in verse 22.

  128. Now again, Paul is trying to bring some clarity here.

  129. He is interacting with these deeply confused Athenians.

  130. And where does he start?

  131. The first thing he starts talking about is God.

  132. Look there to verse 22.

  133. Paul says,

  134. He says,

  135. He says,

  136. I see all of these objects of your worship.

  137. I pass by all of these different synagogues, all of these different altars.

  138. It is clear that you are very religious.

  139. But it is also clear, y'all are real confused.

  140. And so let me make this clear to you.

  141. He says it with absolute certainty, doesn't he?

  142. There is a God.

  143. You know, depending on who you speak with, that type of certainty is hard to come by, isn't it?

  144. Some people claim to be atheists, meaning they don't believe that there is any sort of God.

  145. Others claim to be agnostic.

  146. That's a little bit more fashionable now, these days.

  147. Where they claim, well, maybe there is a God.

  148. Maybe there is not a God.

  149. But I don't know.

  150. And how could we know?

  151. But Paul here speaks with absolute direct certainty.

  152. He says there is a God.

  153. How can he be so confident?

  154. You know, if you're here and you're not a believer,

  155. you might wonder as you speak with your Christian friends,

  156. as you come to a Christian worship service,

  157. we stand here every single week proclaiming the truth that there is a God.

  158. Maybe you wonder,

  159. How in the world can all these Christians be so confident?

  160. No one's ever seen God.

  161. No one's ever touched God.

  162. No one's ever sat next to him.

  163. How do you know that there is a God?

  164. I think Paul would answer that question in two ways.

  165. For one, he would say,

  166. Look around you.

  167. Look around you.

  168. Greece is one of those places where I would love to visit.

  169. Maybe some of y'all have been there before.

  170. I've never been.

  171. I would love to go.

  172. But everything that you hear about Greece

  173. is that it is just absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.

  174. You have Mount Olympus over here.

  175. You have Elephanisi Beach.

  176. I don't know if I'm pronouncing that right.

  177. Elephanisi Beach over here.

  178. It's got this pink coral sand.

  179. And then the light blue, breathtaking, clear waters over here.

  180. If you go dive into the waters,

  181. there's over 500 species of marine life there in the water to see and explore.

  182. You have loggerhead turtles and parrotfish

  183. and all sorts of octopus there.

  184. There's Samaria Gorge up here.

  185. Some of the best hiking in all of Europe.

  186. You have volcanic landscapes over here.

  187. Everywhere you look, there is natural beauty all around you.

  188. And I promise y'all I'm not trying to sell you a trip to Greece this morning.

  189. Although if you want to go, I'll go with you.

  190. The point is,

  191. this type of beauty in creation and in nature,

  192. it has a message.

  193. All of it proclaims that there is a beautiful,

  194. supernatural creator who made it all.

  195. One way that God makes himself known

  196. is in and through his works of creation.

  197. This is where Paul starts, isn't it?

  198. He says,

  199. The God who made the world and everything in it,

  200. this God I proclaim to you.

  201. Psalm 19 tells us,

  202. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  203. They have a message.

  204. The heavens proclaim the glory of God.

  205. The skies above proclaim his handiwork.

  206. Day after day, they pour out speech.

  207. Night after night, they reveal knowledge.

  208. And listen to this.

  209. There is no speech,

  210. nor are there words,

  211. whose voice is not heard.

  212. In other words,

  213. everyone in creation,

  214. everyone in this room,

  215. and everyone in the world

  216. has heard this message loud and clear.

  217. There is a God.

  218. We can know there's a God

  219. because we live in his creation.

  220. And Paul keeps going.

  221. He says,

  222. Verse 25,

  223. This God gives to mankind life and breath and everything.

  224. It all comes from his sovereign hand.

  225. Not only this,

  226. this God actively rules over his creation.

  227. Verse 26,

  228. He determines the allotted periods

  229. and the boundaries of all the dwelling places

  230. of all the peoples of the earth.

  231. God is actively at work in his creation.

  232. All his creation proclaims who he is.

  233. We have to start here.

  234. There is a God,

  235. and we live in his world.

  236. But there's another second answer

  237. that Paul might give to that question.

  238. If you were to ask him,

  239. Paul,

  240. how do you know that there's a God?

  241. He would say,

  242. creation,

  243. that's one,

  244. but also,

  245. and especially,

  246. proclamation.

  247. Proclamation.

  248. See, the Athenians,

  249. they weren't atheists.

  250. They weren't even agnostics.

  251. They worshipped as many gods

  252. as they could possibly think up.

  253. They were religious pluralists.

  254. They had those coexist bumper stickers

  255. long before we did.

  256. They thought that all of these different gods,

  257. all of these different religions

  258. could play nicely together,

  259. and we just kind of take a piece of truth from here

  260. and a piece of truth from here,

  261. and we can worship all of them, right?

  262. And there's an old argument that people make,

  263. and they give this example of an elephant.

  264. Maybe you've heard this before.

  265. And they say,

  266. well,

  267. what if each religion is just kind of looking at the elephant

  268. from a different perspective?

  269. And so Christians,

  270. they're looking at the side of the elephant,

  271. so they describe it as tall,

  272. and they describe it as long.

  273. But maybe the Muslims,

  274. maybe they're looking at the elephant

  275. from the top view,

  276. and so they describe these tusks

  277. coming out from the front,

  278. and the long trunk,

  279. and the hair running down from top to bottom.

  280. And maybe the Buddhists,

  281. maybe they're looking at it from behind,

  282. and so they describe these sturdy hind legs,

  283. and they describe the wagging tail.

  284. But really,

  285. all of us,

  286. we're all playing the same game here.

  287. We're all worshiping the same God.

  288. We're all describing the same thing.

  289. We just all have different perspectives,

  290. right?

  291. The response that we would give

  292. to that sort of argument would be,

  293. well,

  294. what if that elephant can speak?

  295. What if we're not left to figure it out

  296. with our own limited perspective?

  297. What if the elephant can actually speak

  298. and reveal to himself

  299. what he's like?

  300. We believe that's exactly what God has done.

  301. The God who created all things

  302. has spoken.

  303. He has revealed himself

  304. through his word.

  305. His holy word reveals his holy character

  306. and his plans for his creation.

  307. And even more than that,

  308. we have the supreme revelation

  309. of the person and the work

  310. and the character of our holy God

  311. in his Son,

  312. Jesus Christ.

  313. The very word of God

  314. who became flesh

  315. and dwelt among us.

  316. Jesus Christ

  317. is the revelation of God.

  318. Friend,

  319. if you are

  320. confused or uncertain,

  321. if you want to know about God,

  322. spend time in his world,

  323. but also and especially

  324. spend time in his word.

  325. Paul begins his message

  326. simply telling us

  327. there is a God.

  328. He is our creator.

  329. He is our ruler.

  330. He has revealed himself

  331. in his world.

  332. He has revealed himself

  333. in his word.

  334. But he doesn't stop there.

  335. Second,

  336. we see also

  337. this gospel message

  338. is also a message about us.

  339. The gospel is also

  340. a message about man.

  341. John Calvin,

  342. he starts off his institutes

  343. with this now famous line.

  344. He says,

  345. Nearly all wisdom

  346. that we possess,

  347. that is to say,

  348. true and sound wisdom,

  349. consists in two parts.

  350. The knowledge of God

  351. and the knowledge

  352. of ourselves.

  353. This is important.

  354. We need to not only

  355. understand who God is,

  356. but in light of who he is,

  357. we need to rightly understand

  358. understand who we are.

  359. And we should know

  360. that it is not good news.

  361. Not yet at least.

  362. Calvin goes on to say,

  363. well,

  364. when we truly see ourselves,

  365. when we pop open the hood

  366. and look and see what's inside,

  367. what will we find?

  368. He says,

  369. we are going to find

  370. a teeming horde

  371. of infirmities.

  372. To put it plainly,

  373. the gospel,

  374. the bad news

  375. of the gospel,

  376. it tells us that

  377. you and I

  378. and everyone else,

  379. we are all

  380. deeply sinful.

  381. There is a God

  382. and we are at odds

  383. with him

  384. because of our sin.

  385. There is a creator God

  386. and we have not

  387. honored him

  388. as we ought to honor him.

  389. What do I mean?

  390. Well,

  391. consider the Athenians.

  392. Paul tells us plainly,

  393. for one thing,

  394. like the Athenians,

  395. we are deeply confused

  396. about the value

  397. of religion.

  398. Paul goes through the city.

  399. He's bothered

  400. by what he sees.

  401. There's idols

  402. all over the place.

  403. There's temples everywhere.

  404. There's worship

  405. being offered up

  406. to every sort of false god

  407. that you can imagine.

  408. And he says,

  409. man,

  410. y'all are really religious.

  411. It's clear

  412. that simply being religious

  413. in and of itself,

  414. it may not be a good thing,

  415. is it?

  416. The religious devotion

  417. in and of itself,

  418. if it's misdirected,

  419. is not a good thing.

  420. Our Muslim friends,

  421. they are deeply religious.

  422. Our Hindu friends

  423. are deeply religious.

  424. Some of y'all college

  425. sports fans, right?

  426. Deeply religious.

  427. We're wrong to think

  428. that religious devotion

  429. in and of itself

  430. brings us any closer

  431. to God.

  432. You know,

  433. you don't earn

  434. any brownie points

  435. with God this morning

  436. for being here,

  437. for singing the songs,

  438. for coming to church,

  439. for doing all

  440. the religious things.

  441. Apart from genuine

  442. repentance from your sin,

  443. and apart from

  444. a saving relationship

  445. with Jesus Christ,

  446. your religion is empty.

  447. Not only this,

  448. but like the Athenians,

  449. we have all worshipped idols.

  450. I remember when

  451. we lived in Charlotte.

  452. Amanda and I,

  453. we went on a walk.

  454. It was snowing outside,

  455. and we decided to go

  456. for a walk,

  457. and we came up

  458. to the Charlotte Buddha Temple,

  459. and we were feeling

  460. adventurous that day,

  461. and so we decided

  462. to walk inside

  463. and just take a look.

  464. They allowed us

  465. to go in and do that,

  466. and I will never forget

  467. what I saw

  468. when I went in there.

  469. The walls were lined

  470. from top to bottom,

  471. up and down

  472. with statues,

  473. images,

  474. idols,

  475. and there were people there

  476. bowing down to them,

  477. head on the ground,

  478. arms outstretched,

  479. praying to these figures,

  480. and I just thought,

  481. somebody made these things.

  482. Somebody pieced these together,

  483. and somebody placed them

  484. up on a shelf.

  485. Somebody painted

  486. the faces on them,

  487. put them right there,

  488. and how foolish it is

  489. for these people

  490. to bow down

  491. and to worship

  492. some created thing,

  493. but the truth is,

  494. we are all guilty

  495. of this exact same thing.

  496. I'll quote Calvin again.

  497. He says,

  498. the human heart

  499. is an idol factory.

  500. Constantly,

  501. we are cranking out

  502. idols in our hearts,

  503. so no,

  504. we may not bow down

  505. to a statue,

  506. but we make idols

  507. of sports,

  508. and we make idols

  509. of sex,

  510. and we make idols

  511. of money,

  512. we make idols

  513. of success,

  514. we make idols

  515. of the approval

  516. of others,

  517. we make idols

  518. of our children,

  519. we make idols

  520. of our marriage.

  521. No,

  522. we may not lay down

  523. with our face

  524. to the ground

  525. and pray to these things,

  526. but we give our lives

  527. to these things,

  528. and we put them

  529. in a sacred place

  530. in our heart

  531. that belongs

  532. to God alone.

  533. That's idolatry.

  534. Paul says,

  535. how foolish is this?

  536. Don't you see?

  537. Verse 29,

  538. don't you see?

  539. He says,

  540. we are the offspring

  541. of God.

  542. We are made

  543. in the image of God.

  544. Some of your own poets

  545. have recognized this,

  546. and if that's true,

  547. then why would we

  548. ever think

  549. that God,

  550. our creator,

  551. is like gold

  552. or silver

  553. or stone?

  554. Why would we ever

  555. fall down

  556. and worship

  557. the created things

  558. when our creator

  559. is the one

  560. that's deserving

  561. of our praise?

  562. Not only this,

  563. but like the Athenians,

  564. we have all

  565. walked in pride.

  566. Paul humbles them

  567. a little bit here

  568. in verse 24.

  569. Look there.

  570. Paul says,

  571. this God

  572. who created

  573. heaven and earth,

  574. he doesn't live

  575. in your temples.

  576. He's not served

  577. by your hands

  578. as though he needed

  579. anything.

  580. You realize

  581. God does not need

  582. anything from you.

  583. What a prideful thought.

  584. But again,

  585. in our sin,

  586. this is our default mode,

  587. isn't it?

  588. We want the universe

  589. to be about us.

  590. We want to be

  591. in control

  592. of our life.

  593. And if we serve

  594. a God,

  595. if we worship

  596. a God,

  597. we got to have

  598. a God that needs

  599. us,

  600. needs our service,

  601. needs a little bit

  602. of our help,

  603. one we can pick up

  604. and put down

  605. exactly where we want

  606. so we can be in control.

  607. Paul says,

  608. no.

  609. What we need

  610. is a bigger view

  611. of God

  612. and a smaller view

  613. of ourself.

  614. We have all

  615. walked in pride.

  616. It keeps going.

  617. not only this,

  618. but also like

  619. the Athenians,

  620. we have all sought

  621. independence from God.

  622. Look at verse 25

  623. and verse 26.

  624. Again,

  625. Paul says,

  626. God has given you

  627. your life.

  628. But have you

  629. lived your life

  630. for him?

  631. God has given you

  632. your breath.

  633. He sustains your life

  634. this very moment.

  635. But do you consider

  636. that every breath

  637. you take

  638. comes from him

  639. and belongs to him?

  640. Have you offered

  641. back up

  642. every single breath,

  643. every single breath

  644. you've taken

  645. for your entire life?

  646. Have you offered

  647. it back up

  648. to him in worship?

  649. God has given you

  650. everything,

  651. he says.

  652. But do you give

  653. everything to God?

  654. None of us have.

  655. And not a single one

  656. of us

  657. have done this perfectly.

  658. And I say all

  659. because this is me too.

  660. We all

  661. have sought

  662. independence

  663. from God.

  664. That's the essence

  665. of sin.

  666. Ultimately,

  667. what this means

  668. is that we have

  669. all failed

  670. to live up

  671. to our purpose

  672. for existing

  673. in the first place.

  674. Are you all

  675. depressed yet?

  676. Thought you'd come

  677. in here and have

  678. a peppy Easter message?

  679. Think again.

  680. We'll get there.

  681. Verse 27 says,

  682. God made us

  683. that we should

  684. seek him.

  685. God made us

  686. that we should

  687. seek him.

  688. God made you

  689. that you should

  690. seek him.

  691. Have you sought

  692. him?

  693. Have you sought

  694. him perfectly?

  695. Have you always

  696. sought him?

  697. If not,

  698. then friend,

  699. join the club.

  700. You are a sinner

  701. just like me,

  702. just like

  703. the Athenians.

  704. This is bad news.

  705. And to make it

  706. worse,

  707. Paul says,

  708. verse 31,

  709. that there's a

  710. time of judgment

  711. coming against

  712. the world.

  713. Paul says,

  714. God has fixed

  715. a day of judgment

  716. to address

  717. every sin.

  718. Look there

  719. to verse 30.

  720. He says,

  721. the times of

  722. ignorance God

  723. overlooked,

  724. but now he

  725. commands all

  726. people everywhere

  727. to repent

  728. because he has

  729. fixed a day

  730. on which he

  731. will judge the

  732. world in

  733. righteousness

  734. by a man

  735. whom he has

  736. appointed.

  737. And of this

  738. he has given

  739. assurance to all

  740. by raising him

  741. from the dead.

  742. So we see

  743. there is an

  744. infinite gap

  745. between the

  746. glory and

  747. the holiness

  748. of God

  749. and between

  750. our sin.

  751. There is a

  752. problem to be

  753. dealt with.

  754. There is an

  755. issue.

  756. God's wrath

  757. is against us

  758. in our sin.

  759. There is a

  760. coming day of

  761. judgment.

  762. What can we

  763. do about this?

  764. The command

  765. is clear.

  766. He says,

  767. friend,

  768. repent of

  769. your sin.

  770. Repent of

  771. your sin.

  772. This is the

  773. bad news

  774. of the gospel,

  775. but tucked

  776. into this

  777. bad news

  778. is some

  779. incredibly

  780. good news.

  781. I wonder

  782. if you saw

  783. it.

  784. And it's

  785. the good

  786. news that

  787. we celebrate

  788. here at

  789. Easter and

  790. that we

  791. celebrate every

  792. other Sunday

  793. for that

  794. matter.

  795. Third,

  796. we see

  797. the gospel

  798. is a

  799. message

  800. about

  801. Jesus.

  802. Did you

  803. catch it?

  804. Read it

  805. again.

  806. He says,

  807. sinners

  808. everywhere are

  809. commanded to

  810. repent of

  811. their sins.

  812. Why?

  813. Because God

  814. has fixed a

  815. day of coming

  816. judgment.

  817. God will

  818. judge the

  819. world in

  820. righteousness

  821. by a man

  822. whom he has

  823. appointed.

  824. Who could

  825. this be?

  826. God has

  827. given assurance

  828. of this to

  829. all by

  830. raising him

  831. from the

  832. dead.

  833. Who could

  834. this be?

  835. who is

  836. the God

  837. appointed,

  838. resurrected,

  839. coming judge

  840. of all the

  841. earth?

  842. It is

  843. the risen

  844. Lord

  845. Jesus.

  846. The

  847. resurrection

  848. of Jesus

  849. is right

  850. here at

  851. the very

  852. heart of

  853. the message

  854. of the

  855. gospel.

  856. And it's

  857. the only

  858. hope for

  859. sinners like

  860. us.

  861. In fact,

  862. this seems

  863. to be at

  864. the very

  865. heart of

  866. Paul's

  867. message.

  868. Even

  869. before he

  870. gets up

  871. there at

  872. the top

  873. of the

  874. Areopagus,

  875. verse 18

  876. says he

  877. was

  878. preaching

  879. about

  880. what?

  881. What does

  882. it say?

  883. How does

  884. it sum

  885. up his

  886. preaching?

  887. He was

  888. preaching

  889. about

  890. Jesus

  891. and the

  892. resurrection.

  893. This is

  894. right at

  895. the heart

  896. of the

  897. Christian

  898. message.

  899. If you

  900. want to

  901. know what

  902. Christians

  903. are all

  904. about,

  905. we are

  906. all about

  907. Jesus

  908. and the

  909. resurrection.

  910. Look at

  911. how they

  912. responded to

  913. this message.

  914. They thought

  915. he was

  916. crazy.

  917. Isn't

  918. it

  919. interesting?

  920. They sat

  921. through all

  922. that stuff

  923. about God

  924. making

  925. all

  926. things.

  927. They sat

  928. through all

  929. that stuff.

  930. The hard

  931. talk about

  932. his rebukes

  933. of their

  934. idolatry.

  935. They endured

  936. that well

  937. enough.

  938. But verse

  939. 32 says

  940. when they

  941. heard about

  942. the resurrection

  943. of the

  944. dead,

  945. now they

  946. mock him

  947. and they

  948. say that's

  949. crazy.

  950. You realize

  951. it's no

  952. different

  953. today?

  954. Do you

  955. realize how

  956. absurd it

  957. sounds to

  958. claim that

  959. somebody actually

  960. rose from

  961. the dead?

  962. If you

  963. zoom out of

  964. our Christian

  965. bubble here

  966. for a minute,

  967. when you

  968. go and

  969. talk to

  970. a non-believer

  971. and you

  972. tell them

  973. that you

  974. actually

  975. believe that

  976. some 2,000

  977. years ago

  978. this man

  979. named Jesus

  980. who's not

  981. actually just

  982. a man,

  983. he's God

  984. in the flesh,

  985. he lived

  986. perfectly,

  987. he died on

  988. the cross,

  989. he actually

  990. died,

  991. he was laid

  992. in the tomb,

  993. but then he

  994. actually got

  995. up from

  996. the dead.

  997. Do you

  998. realize how

  999. crazy we

  1000. sound?

  1001. It sounds

  1002. absurd.

  1003. And because

  1004. of this,

  1005. some religious

  1006. groups,

  1007. entire

  1008. denominations

  1009. that claim

  1010. to be

  1011. Christian,

  1012. they no

  1013. longer teach

  1014. that the

  1015. resurrection

  1016. actually happened.

  1017. They minimize

  1018. it to an

  1019. idea or

  1020. some spiritual

  1021. lesson about

  1022. perseverance or

  1023. something about

  1024. Christ's example

  1025. living on after

  1026. he died.

  1027. You may be

  1028. tempted to

  1029. minimize it

  1030. like that.

  1031. You may

  1032. think that it

  1033. sounds crazy,

  1034. but I promise

  1035. you,

  1036. I am

  1037. convinced,

  1038. every member

  1039. of this

  1040. church is

  1041. convinced that

  1042. Jesus actually,

  1043. really,

  1044. truly,

  1045. physically got

  1046. up from

  1047. the dead.

  1048. And in

  1049. fact,

  1050. if Jesus

  1051. is not

  1052. actually,

  1053. truly,

  1054. physically,

  1055. really risen

  1056. from the grave,

  1057. not just as

  1058. an idea,

  1059. not just as

  1060. an inspirational

  1061. lesson or some

  1062. nonsense like

  1063. that,

  1064. but really,

  1065. truly,

  1066. physically,

  1067. alive again,

  1068. none of this

  1069. matters one

  1070. bit.

  1071. The resurrection

  1072. isn't just

  1073. something that

  1074. is just a

  1075. make-believe

  1076. story that we

  1077. celebrate once

  1078. a year because

  1079. it's kind of

  1080. traditional and

  1081. it's just what

  1082. we do.

  1083. No,

  1084. everything hangs

  1085. on this.

  1086. Everything hangs

  1087. on whether or

  1088. not Jesus

  1089. Christ actually

  1090. rose from

  1091. the dead.

  1092. God.

  1093. This is what

  1094. Paul tells us

  1095. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  1096. chapter 15,

  1097. this famous

  1098. chapter on the

  1099. resurrection of

  1100. Jesus.

  1101. He says,

  1102. I deliver to

  1103. you as of

  1104. first importance

  1105. what I also

  1106. received,

  1107. that Christ

  1108. died for our

  1109. sins in

  1110. accordance with

  1111. the scriptures,

  1112. scriptures,

  1113. that he was

  1114. buried,

  1115. that he was

  1116. raised on the

  1117. third day in

  1118. accordance with

  1119. the scriptures,

  1120. and that he

  1121. appeared to

  1122. Cephas and

  1123. then to the

  1124. twelve,

  1125. and then he

  1126. appeared to

  1127. more than

  1128. 500 brothers

  1129. at one time,

  1130. most of whom

  1131. are still alive.

  1132. In other words,

  1133. if you have any

  1134. questions,

  1135. go ask them.

  1136. friend,

  1137. when we say

  1138. Christ is

  1139. risen,

  1140. and the

  1141. church responds,

  1142. he is risen

  1143. indeed,

  1144. this is a

  1145. historical

  1146. claim,

  1147. not primarily

  1148. a moral

  1149. claim,

  1150. or an

  1151. ethical

  1152. claim,

  1153. but actually,

  1154. we actually

  1155. believe,

  1156. I got to make

  1157. this clear to

  1158. you,

  1159. we actually

  1160. believe Jesus

  1161. rose from the

  1162. dead,

  1163. you know that,

  1164. right?

  1165. Billy Graham

  1166. says,

  1167. there is more

  1168. evidence that

  1169. Jesus rose from

  1170. the dead than

  1171. there is that

  1172. Julius Caesar

  1173. ever lived,

  1174. or that

  1175. Alexander the

  1176. Great died at

  1177. the age of

  1178. 33.

  1179. Charles Spurgeon

  1180. says,

  1181. the resurrection

  1182. is a fact

  1183. better attested

  1184. than any event

  1185. recorded in

  1186. any history,

  1187. whether ancient

  1188. or modern.

  1189. There were so

  1190. many witnesses

  1191. to behold it

  1192. that if we do

  1193. in the least

  1194. degree receive

  1195. the credibility

  1196. of men's

  1197. testimonies,

  1198. we cannot

  1199. and we dare

  1200. not doubt

  1201. that Jesus

  1202. rose from

  1203. the dead.

  1204. Do you

  1205. believe it?

  1206. I just marvel

  1207. at this fact

  1208. for just a

  1209. minute.

  1210. Here we have

  1211. over 500

  1212. witnesses,

  1213. and not to

  1214. mention the

  1215. dramatic change

  1216. in the apostles,

  1217. they went from

  1218. fumbling and

  1219. bumbling,

  1220. scared and

  1221. uncertain,

  1222. and now to

  1223. giving everything

  1224. for the sake

  1225. of preaching

  1226. Christ resurrected.

  1227. How do you

  1228. explain that?

  1229. How do you

  1230. explain the

  1231. apostle Paul?

  1232. You know

  1233. this is the

  1234. same Paul

  1235. who used

  1236. to go around

  1237. arresting

  1238. Christians

  1239. and who

  1240. hated the

  1241. spread of

  1242. the gospel,

  1243. who wanted

  1244. to bottle

  1245. it up and

  1246. kill them

  1247. and wipe

  1248. them off

  1249. the face

  1250. of the

  1251. earth,

  1252. and now

  1253. he's going

  1254. around from

  1255. town to

  1256. town risking

  1257. injury,

  1258. risking death,

  1259. suffering,

  1260. in order to

  1261. proclaim that

  1262. Christ rose

  1263. from the

  1264. grave.

  1265. How do you

  1266. explain it?

  1267. How do you

  1268. explain the

  1269. sudden shift

  1270. all throughout

  1271. the ancient

  1272. world where

  1273. believers all

  1274. of a sudden

  1275. now move

  1276. their day of

  1277. worship from

  1278. Saturday now

  1279. to Sunday?

  1280. Why?

  1281. That's the

  1282. day of the

  1283. Lord's

  1284. resurrection.

  1285. Not to

  1286. mention to

  1287. this day all

  1288. anybody would

  1289. have to do to

  1290. just make all

  1291. these Christians

  1292. be quiet,

  1293. go dig up the

  1294. body of Jesus

  1295. and bring it

  1296. to me.

  1297. And they

  1298. can't do it.

  1299. Why?

  1300. Because the

  1301. tomb is

  1302. empty.

  1303. Christ has

  1304. risen.

  1305. death is

  1306. defeated.

  1307. Paul says

  1308. this is the

  1309. whole point.

  1310. This is what

  1311. Christ came to

  1312. do.

  1313. And this is at

  1314. the very center

  1315. and heart of

  1316. the message of

  1317. Christianity.

  1318. And if you

  1319. fit into that

  1320. category of

  1321. center, which

  1322. guess what?

  1323. We all do.

  1324. The message of

  1325. the gospel,

  1326. the good news,

  1327. is that Christ

  1328. Jesus has

  1329. come to live

  1330. in our place,

  1331. to die and

  1332. bear the wrath

  1333. of God that

  1334. we have

  1335. earned and

  1336. to rise again

  1337. from the

  1338. dead to

  1339. crush the

  1340. powers of

  1341. sin and

  1342. darkness.

  1343. It's proof

  1344. positive for

  1345. us.

  1346. Paul calls it

  1347. assurance.

  1348. And that

  1349. Jesus is in

  1350. fact God in

  1351. the flesh as

  1352. he claimed to

  1353. be.

  1354. His resurrection

  1355. is proof

  1356. positive for

  1357. us that his

  1358. sacrifice was

  1359. acceptable to

  1360. God.

  1361. His payment

  1362. for our sins

  1363. was sufficient

  1364. once for all.

  1365. his resurrection

  1366. is proof

  1367. positive.

  1368. It's assurance

  1369. that sin

  1370. and death

  1371. and the devil

  1372. himself have

  1373. been conquered.

  1374. Christ has

  1375. won.

  1376. His resurrection

  1377. is proof

  1378. positive that

  1379. every word of

  1380. the Lord

  1381. proves true

  1382. including his

  1383. promised coming

  1384. return.

  1385. The resurrection

  1386. of Jesus is

  1387. everything for

  1388. us.

  1389. As Paul says

  1390. in 1 Corinthians

  1391. 15, if Christ

  1392. is still in the

  1393. tomb, we are

  1394. still in our

  1395. sins.

  1396. If the tomb

  1397. is full, then

  1398. all this

  1399. religion stuff

  1400. is empty.

  1401. If he is

  1402. dead, then so

  1403. is our hope.

  1404. But in fact,

  1405. Christ has been

  1406. raised from

  1407. the dead.

  1408. And this is the

  1409. basic message of

  1410. the gospel.

  1411. God is our

  1412. creator.

  1413. We have

  1414. rebelled against

  1415. him.

  1416. Christ has been

  1417. offered up as

  1418. the one time

  1419. sufficient payment

  1420. for our sins.

  1421. He lives and

  1422. reigns now in

  1423. resurrection.

  1424. But we can't

  1425. stop there.

  1426. Because fourth,

  1427. we see this

  1428. message demands

  1429. a response.

  1430. This message

  1431. demands that

  1432. you respond.

  1433. I wonder if it

  1434. would surprise you

  1435. to know that the

  1436. devil believes

  1437. everything that I've

  1438. talked about this

  1439. morning.

  1440. all the demons

  1441. in hell know

  1442. the truth about

  1443. God.

  1444. All the demons

  1445. in hell know

  1446. the truth about

  1447. our sin.

  1448. All the demons

  1449. in hell know

  1450. that Jesus has

  1451. risen from the

  1452. grave.

  1453. They know it

  1454. better than

  1455. most.

  1456. Simply knowing

  1457. the truth will

  1458. not save you.

  1459. You must make

  1460. a grace-enabled

  1461. response to the

  1462. truth.

  1463. Paul here,

  1464. he gives them

  1465. the gospel as

  1466. plain and simple

  1467. and clear as he

  1468. can make it.

  1469. God is the

  1470. creator and

  1471. ruler.

  1472. Man is a

  1473. sinner.

  1474. Christ is the

  1475. risen Savior.

  1476. But look at

  1477. what happens

  1478. here in verse

  1479. 32.

  1480. There's a mixed

  1481. response to the

  1482. message of the

  1483. gospel.

  1484. Now when they

  1485. heard of the

  1486. resurrection of

  1487. the dead,

  1488. some mocked,

  1489. but others

  1490. said, we will

  1491. hear you again

  1492. about this.

  1493. Now you see

  1494. the difference?

  1495. Some immediately

  1496. reject it.

  1497. They mock it.

  1498. They write it

  1499. off as ridiculous.

  1500. Others are

  1501. intrigued by it.

  1502. They want to

  1503. hear more.

  1504. And Paul goes

  1505. out from their

  1506. midst in verse

  1507. 34.

  1508. He says, but

  1509. some men joined

  1510. him and

  1511. believed.

  1512. Now I love

  1513. that he calls

  1514. them by name.

  1515. It says, Dionysius

  1516. heard the gospel

  1517. and he believed

  1518. the gospel that

  1519. day.

  1520. And Damaris,

  1521. she heard the

  1522. gospel that

  1523. day and she

  1524. put her faith

  1525. in Christ.

  1526. She believed

  1527. the gospel

  1528. that day.

  1529. And still

  1530. others with

  1531. them.

  1532. They responded

  1533. to this truth

  1534. by putting

  1535. their faith

  1536. in Christ.

  1537. Friend, there

  1538. are many

  1539. responses to

  1540. this gospel

  1541. message.

  1542. And I have

  1543. no doubt

  1544. that this

  1545. morning, some

  1546. of you probably

  1547. will leave

  1548. here laughing

  1549. at the idea

  1550. of an actual

  1551. physical

  1552. resurrection.

  1553. Some of y'all

  1554. will think that

  1555. is absurd.

  1556. And still

  1557. some of you

  1558. might be

  1559. intrigued.

  1560. Maybe you

  1561. come back

  1562. next week.

  1563. Maybe you

  1564. want to hear

  1565. more about

  1566. this Jesus

  1567. and who

  1568. he is and

  1569. what he's

  1570. done.

  1571. You're

  1572. curious.

  1573. But I hope

  1574. and I pray

  1575. and I think

  1576. that some

  1577. of you this

  1578. morning may

  1579. be like

  1580. Dionysius

  1581. and like

  1582. Damaris.

  1583. Some of you

  1584. this morning

  1585. may be ready

  1586. by the grace

  1587. of God

  1588. to leave

  1589. behind your

  1590. sin and to

  1591. put your

  1592. faith in

  1593. Jesus.

  1594. And if

  1595. that's you,

  1596. if you are

  1597. not a

  1598. believer,

  1599. friend, your

  1600. response this

  1601. morning to

  1602. this message

  1603. is very

  1604. simple.

  1605. Repent of

  1606. your sins

  1607. and put your

  1608. faith in

  1609. Christ.

  1610. Turn from

  1611. your sin

  1612. and put your

  1613. faith in the

  1614. risen Lord

  1615. Jesus and

  1616. you will leave

  1617. here this

  1618. morning risen

  1619. with Christ

  1620. as a new

  1621. creation.

  1622. creation.

  1623. The old

  1624. is gone.

  1625. Behold, the

  1626. new has

  1627. come.

  1628. And for

  1629. you, church

  1630. believer,

  1631. we respond to

  1632. this familiar

  1633. message with

  1634. a heart of

  1635. worship and

  1636. gratitude for

  1637. what God has

  1638. done in

  1639. Christ.

  1640. Praise God.

  1641. In Christ,

  1642. your sins

  1643. have been

  1644. forgiven.

  1645. Because Christ

  1646. has conquered,

  1647. death has

  1648. been defeated.

  1649. And because

  1650. Christ is

  1651. coming again,

  1652. he will bring

  1653. you to be

  1654. where he is

  1655. for the rest

  1656. of eternity

  1657. in the

  1658. presence of

  1659. God.

  1660. J.C.

  1661. Ryle says,

  1662. we need not

  1663. wonder that so

  1664. much importance

  1665. is attached

  1666. to our Lord's

  1667. resurrection.

  1668. It is the

  1669. seal and

  1670. headstone of

  1671. the great work

  1672. of redemption

  1673. which he came

  1674. to do.

  1675. It is the

  1676. crowning proof

  1677. that he has

  1678. paid the debt

  1679. which he undertook

  1680. to pay on

  1681. our behalf.

  1682. He's won the

  1683. battle which he

  1684. fought to

  1685. deliver us

  1686. from hell

  1687. and is

  1688. accepted as

  1689. our surety

  1690. and our

  1691. substitute

  1692. by our

  1693. Father in

  1694. Heaven.

  1695. Had he

  1696. never come

  1697. forth from

  1698. the prison

  1699. of the grave,

  1700. how could we

  1701. ever have

  1702. been sure

  1703. that our

  1704. ransom had

  1705. been fully

  1706. paid?

  1707. Had he

  1708. never risen

  1709. from his

  1710. conflict with

  1711. the last

  1712. enemy,

  1713. how could we

  1714. have felt

  1715. confident that

  1716. he has

  1717. overcome

  1718. death and

  1719. him that

  1720. had the

  1721. power of

  1722. death,

  1723. that is the

  1724. devil?

  1725. But thanks

  1726. be to

  1727. God.

  1728. We are

  1729. not left

  1730. in doubt.

  1731. The Lord

  1732. Jesus really

  1733. rose again

  1734. for our

  1735. justification.

  1736. True

  1737. Christians are

  1738. begotten

  1739. again unto

  1740. a lively

  1741. hope by the

  1742. resurrection of

  1743. Jesus Christ

  1744. from the

  1745. dead.

  1746. They may

  1747. boldly say

  1748. with Paul,

  1749. who is he

  1750. that condemns?

  1751. It is Christ

  1752. that died,

  1753. yes,

  1754. rather,

  1755. that is risen

  1756. again.

  1757. Father,

  1758. we praise

  1759. you that

  1760. Jesus has

  1761. risen from

  1762. the grave.

  1763. And we

  1764. praise you for

  1765. his sacrifice

  1766. in our place,

  1767. that he has

  1768. paid the debt

  1769. that we owe

  1770. for our sin

  1771. and has been

  1772. raised for our

  1773. justification for

  1774. all who turn

  1775. from their sin

  1776. and put their

  1777. faith in him.

  1778. We praise you

  1779. for the gift of

  1780. eternal life that

  1781. you freely give

  1782. to all who

  1783. believe.

  1784. And we love

  1785. you,

  1786. Father.

  1787. We praise you

  1788. for this in

  1789. Jesus' name.

  1790. Amen.

  1791. Amen.
