  1. Well, please take your Bibles this morning and open them up to Genesis chapter 37.

    Genesis 37 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Their story last week in chapter 36.

  4. And now the rest of the book of Genesis, starting here in chapter 37, is going to focus in on

  5. the story of Joseph.

  6. And so if you would, when you found it, Genesis 37, let's stand in honor of the reading of

  7. the Word of God.

  8. Jacob lived in the land of his father's sojournings in the land of Canaan.

  9. And these are the generations of Jacob.

  10. Joseph, being 17 years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers.

  11. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives.

  12. And Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father.

  13. Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he was the son of his old

  14. age, and he made him a robe of many colors.

  15. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they

  16. hated him and could not speak peacefully to him.

  17. Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more.

  18. He said to them,

  19. Hear this dream that I have dreamed.

  20. Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field.

  21. And behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright.

  22. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf.

  23. And his brothers said to him,

  24. Are you indeed to reign over us?

  25. Or are you indeed to rule over us?

  26. So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.

  27. Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said,

  28. Behold, I have dreamed another dream.

  29. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.

  30. But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him,

  31. What is this dream that you have dreamed?

  32. Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you?

  33. And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.

  34. Now his brothers went to pasture their father's flock near Shechem.

  35. And Israel said to Joseph,

  36. Are not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem?

  37. Come, I will send you to them.

  38. And he said to him,

  39. Here I am.

  40. So he said to him,

  41. Go now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the flock, and bring me word.

  42. So he sent him from the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

  43. And a man found him wandering in the fields, and the man asked him,

  44. What are you seeking?

  45. I am seeking my brothers, he said.

  46. Tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock.

  47. And the man said,

  48. They have gone away, for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan.

  49. So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.

  50. They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them,

  51. they conspired against him to kill him.

  52. And they said to one another,

  53. Here comes this dreamer.

  54. Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits.

  55. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him,

  56. and we will see what will become of his dreams.

  57. But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying,

  58. Let us not take his life.

  59. And Reuben said to them,

  60. Shed no blood.

  61. Throw him into this pit here in the wilderness,

  62. but do not lay a hand on him,

  63. that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father.

  64. So when Joseph came to his brothers,

  65. they stripped him of his robe,

  66. the robe of many colors that he wore,

  67. and they took him and threw him into a pit.

  68. The pit was empty.

  69. There was no water in it.

  70. Then they sat down to eat.

  71. And looking up,

  72. they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead

  73. with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh

  74. on their way to carry it down to Egypt.

  75. Then Judah said to his brothers,

  76. What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?

  77. Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites,

  78. and let not our hand be upon him.

  79. For he is our brother, our own flesh.

  80. And his brothers listened to him.

  81. Then Midianite traders passed by,

  82. and they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit

  83. and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver.

  84. And they took Joseph to Egypt.

  85. When Reuben returned to the pit

  86. and saw that Joseph was not in the pit,

  87. he tore his clothes and returned to his brothers and said,

  88. The boy is gone, and I, where shall I go?

  89. Then they took Joseph's robe and slaughtered a goat

  90. and dipped the robe in the blood.

  91. And they sent the robe of many colors

  92. and brought it to their father and said,

  93. This we have found.

  94. Please identify whether it is your son's robe or not.

  95. And he identified it and said,

  96. It is my son's robe.

  97. A fierce animal has devoured him.

  98. Joseph is without doubt torn to pieces.

  99. Then Jacob tore his garments and put sackcloth on his loins

  100. and mourned for his son many days.

  101. All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him,

  102. but he refused to be comforted and said,

  103. No, I shall go down to Sheol to my son mourning.

  104. Thus his father wept for him.

  105. Meanwhile, the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar,

  106. an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard.

  107. The grass withers and the flower fades,

  108. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  109. Father, we pray now as we open up this word

  110. and begin the story of Joseph,

  111. Lord, would you give us our proper perspective

  112. on the suffering that comes into our life?

  113. Would we see it in light of the promises you've made to us in Christ?

  114. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  115. Amen.

  116. You may be seated.

  117. Amen.

  118. God permits what he hates to accomplish what he loves.

  119. These ten words changed Joni Erikson Tada's perspective on her suffering.

  120. You may be familiar with the story of Joni Erikson Tada.

  121. She suffered a tragic car accident as a teenager

  122. that broke her neck and left her for life,

  123. suffering as a quadriplegic,

  124. suffering all sorts of physical distress,

  125. obviously as a paralyzed teenager,

  126. but as well as emotional distress and spiritual distress.

  127. She wondered and she asked,

  128. well, how could a good God allow something like this to happen to me?

  129. How could a good God allow someone like me

  130. who has all of my life ahead of me

  131. to go through such suffering?

  132. And these ten words shared by a friend of hers

  133. put everything into proper perspective.

  134. God permits what he hates

  135. to accomplish what he loves.

  136. When you read through the scriptures,

  137. you'll notice that believers,

  138. they have a kind of strange way of thinking about suffering

  139. and injustice.

  140. You read the book of James

  141. and you'll see he tells us,

  142. count it all joy, my brothers,

  143. when you meet trials of various kinds.

  144. That's strange.

  145. Peter tells us,

  146. do not be surprised at the fiery trial

  147. when it comes upon you to test you.

  148. John tells us,

  149. don't be surprised, brothers,

  150. that the world hates you.

  151. And Paul tells us,

  152. we rejoice in our sufferings.

  153. I mean, don't you wish that you knew the secret

  154. to how we can actually view suffering

  155. and injustice with that kind of perspective?

  156. This morning, we get to see the secret

  157. from the story of Joseph.

  158. And the secret is this,

  159. it's the absolute certainty

  160. that God is at work in all things,

  161. even the hardest things in our life,

  162. for good.

  163. Now, this seems to be the big picture message

  164. of Joseph's story.

  165. I'm excited to dive into his story

  166. over the next several weeks together.

  167. This is an innocent man,

  168. a teenager, 17 years old,

  169. who faced harsh and unfair circumstances.

  170. He's the victim of great injustice.

  171. And yet, in all of it,

  172. what we see as we walk through Joseph's story together

  173. is that our God was at work for good.

  174. So let's take a look here this morning

  175. and we'll ask the question,

  176. how should believers think about our suffering?

  177. And we'll see four answers this morning.

  178. This will be our outline if you're taking notes.

  179. How should believers think about our suffering?

  180. Four answers.

  181. First, we should understand

  182. that here in a fallen world, believer,

  183. people may hate your favor.

  184. People may hate your favor.

  185. Look there with me to verse one.

  186. We see this in verses one through four here

  187. at the beginning of the passage.

  188. And here we see how loved Joseph is by his father.

  189. Joseph, by the time that we catch up with him

  190. here in chapter seven,

  191. he's now 17 years old.

  192. You might remember how he was the only son

  193. that Rachel bore to Jacob

  194. until finally she gave birth last week to Benjamin

  195. and ended up dying in childbirth with him.

  196. But we see that Joseph,

  197. he holds a special place in his father's heart.

  198. I mean, he is clearly his father's favorite son.

  199. Jacob loved Rachel more than all his other wives.

  200. She was his favorite wife.

  201. And now we see that he loved Joseph

  202. more than all his other sons.

  203. And I'm sure you realize, right, parents in the room,

  204. this is not a good idea.

  205. We ought not play favorites with your kids.

  206. But Jacob does.

  207. And we see this tension building up in the family as a result.

  208. Look there to verse two.

  209. It says that Joseph grew up with his brothers,

  210. the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah.

  211. And he brought a bad report of them to their father.

  212. Younger brother Joseph is a tattletale.

  213. And you can just imagine Joseph coming and spilling all the dirt,

  214. sharing all those bad things his brothers are up to.

  215. And how do you think his brothers are going to feel about that?

  216. Right?

  217. You probably are familiar with the saying,

  218. snitches get what?

  219. Help me.

  220. Snitches.

  221. Yeah, snitches get stitches, right?

  222. Nobody likes to be told on.

  223. And here's Joseph, his father's golden child.

  224. He's spilling all the family gossip at his father's feet.

  225. So that's strike number one against Joseph.

  226. Strike number two comes here in verse three.

  227. Look there.

  228. Verse three says that Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons.

  229. And again, this isn't a surprise.

  230. We've seen this building already, haven't we?

  231. You remember how when Jacob feared meeting Esau on the way back into town,

  232. how he strategically thought about how to handle the situation.

  233. What did he do?

  234. He put all his other kids at the front of the line

  235. and he put Rachel and Joseph all the way at the back

  236. so that if Esau came and was angry,

  237. he would take care of all of them first

  238. and maybe Rachel and Joseph would be able to escape.

  239. This is nothing new here.

  240. Everybody knows that Joseph is the favorite.

  241. And again, we get to see how Israel's sin

  242. is having this negative ripple effect on the whole family here.

  243. He loves Joseph the most.

  244. And to make that abundantly clear, just so that everyone can see it,

  245. Israel gives him this special multicolored robe.

  246. It's like a visual reminder to everyone every day,

  247. to all his brothers, everybody that sees him,

  248. that I'm special and I'm the one that's loved by my father.

  249. You don't have one of those, do you?

  250. Right?

  251. And we see in verse 4,

  252. when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers,

  253. how did they respond?

  254. They hated him.

  255. They could not even speak peacefully to him.

  256. This is strike number two.

  257. They hate that he is so loved by his father.

  258. Now, none of us are Joseph.

  259. This story is not ultimately about us.

  260. But, if we are in Christ,

  261. then we can draw a connection here

  262. and draw some similarities here

  263. to the experience of Christians here in this world.

  264. You remember John told us,

  265. do not be surprised that the world hates you.

  266. And one reason why the world might hate you,

  267. even if they don't recognize it,

  268. is because you, Christian, are so beloved of the father.

  269. Now, just think about who you are in Christ for a moment.

  270. If you are in Christ,

  271. you are a beloved child of God.

  272. And sure, yes, of course,

  273. God has a certain general love for all his creation

  274. and the most general way of speaking

  275. that we are all children of God

  276. and that he has created all of us.

  277. But the Bible tells us

  278. that the Lord has a special, particular,

  279. saving, steadfast love for his people in Christ

  280. that not everyone in the world shares.

  281. Those who are in Christ are children of God.

  282. The Bible tells us those who are not in Christ

  283. are children of the enemy.

  284. The church is the very bride of Christ.

  285. And I can tell you I love all of you,

  286. but I can assure you

  287. I don't love you the same way that I love my bride.

  288. Ephesians 5 tells us that he loves the church

  289. and gave himself up for the church.

  290. And sometimes we sing the line in the old hymn

  291. that from heaven he came and sought her

  292. to be his holy bride.

  293. With his own blood he bought her

  294. and for her life he died.

  295. We are his own body.

  296. He nourishes us and cherishes us

  297. and he washes us as with water,

  298. with the word of God.

  299. We're told in Ephesians 1,

  300. in love he predestined us for adoption as sons.

  301. We're told in Romans 8

  302. that nothing can separate us

  303. from the love of God for us in Christ.

  304. This is the special love that God has for his people.

  305. We may not be robed in material goods,

  306. and some are, some aren't,

  307. but the Lord robes his people in joy

  308. and in confidence and in hope and in holiness.

  309. And one day, church, we will be robed in glory.

  310. But you see, those who don't know him,

  311. they don't share this special favor.

  312. They don't share this place of privilege.

  313. And they don't share this extravagant love of God.

  314. And so what happens when you speak to them

  315. or to your father about their sin

  316. and this thing called repentance of sin,

  317. what happens?

  318. How do they respond?

  319. Some may listen and repent

  320. and prove themselves to belong to the Lord,

  321. but others, guess what?

  322. They will hate you for it.

  323. Do you notice that when you come to Christ

  324. and some of those relationships

  325. that you had before,

  326. they get a little bit tougher,

  327. a little bit harder to navigate?

  328. There is a spiritual division

  329. between those who know the Lord

  330. and those who do not know the Lord.

  331. And there's a reason why.

  332. Jesus tells us in John chapter 15,

    John 15 chapter mention

  333. if the world hates you,

  334. know that it has hated me before it hated you.

  335. If you were of the world,

  336. the world would love you as its own,

  337. but because you are not of the world,

  338. but I chose you out of the world,

  339. we could say with Ephesians 1,

  340. I chose you in love out of the world,

  341. therefore the world hates you.

  342. Don't be surprised by this.

  343. Not only this,

  344. but second,

  345. we should also know in a fallen world,

  346. people may hate your future.

  347. People may hate your future.

  348. Look there with me starting in verse five.

  349. And here we see strike number three.

  350. Joseph has a dream.

  351. And it says that when he shares this dream,

  352. when he told him his dream,

  353. they hated him even more.

  354. What could he possibly say

  355. that would make them so angry?

  356. Look there to verse seven.

  357. He says,

  358. we were all there binding up sheaves in the field,

  359. and behold,

  360. my sheaf stood up,

  361. and all of your sheaves gathered around my sheaf,

  362. and they bowed down to my sheaf.

  363. And it seems like they all understand the meaning.

  364. Are you really going to reign over us?

  365. And so they hated him even more for his dreams

  366. and for his words.

  367. But he's not done.

  368. I mean,

  369. you'd think this guy,

  370. maybe he would have gotten the message by now.

  371. But verse nine says he dreams again,

  372. and he goes and opens up his mouth,

  373. and he goes and tells them again,

  374. just no awareness at all, right?

  375. And he says,

  376. well,

  377. this time,

  378. listen to my dream,

  379. guys,

  380. the sun and the moon

  381. and the 11 stars

  382. were all bowing down to me.

  383. Can you imagine the brothers?

  384. These 11 brothers.

  385. Now,

  386. every word that Joseph is saying at this point

  387. is just cranking up the heat right now,

  388. right?

  389. Are you kidding me,

  390. Joseph?

  391. These 11 stars are bowing down to you

  392. and the sun and the moon,

  393. mom and dad too.

  394. And it says,

  395. when he told it to his father

  396. and to his brothers,

  397. his father rebukes him

  398. and says,

  399. what is this dream you've dreamed?

  400. Shall I and your mother

  401. and your brothers

  402. really come down

  403. and bow ourselves

  404. to the ground before you?

  405. And it says,

  406. his brothers were jealous of him,

  407. but his father kept the saying in mind.

  408. Now,

  409. I make no excuses

  410. for what happens next,

  411. right?

  412. I mean,

  413. the brothers are clearly

  414. 100% in the wrong,

  415. but you can understand

  416. why they're upset,

  417. can't you?

  418. I mean,

  419. who is this guy?

  420. Who does Joseph think he is?

  421. He's already got it all.

  422. The dad loves him

  423. more than all of us

  424. and now he's telling us

  425. this dream he has

  426. of all of us

  427. bowing down to him.

  428. Really?

  429. They hate him

  430. for what God has revealed to him

  431. about his future.

  432. And again,

  433. Christian,

  434. I don't think we have to work too hard

  435. to draw a parallel

  436. to our experience,

  437. do we?

  438. A Christian,

  439. you understand,

  440. don't you then?

  441. That you have ahead of you

  442. a glorious future.

  443. If you are in Christ,

  444. you are destined for glory

  445. and we know that

  446. without a shadow of a doubt,

  447. if you are in Christ,

  448. you are going to be

  449. with him in glory.

  450. We have ahead of us,

  451. we get to inherit

  452. the new heavens

  453. and the new earth,

  454. all the world

  455. renewed

  456. and freed

  457. from sin's curse.

  458. That's our future in Christ.

  459. And we can say

  460. even more than that,

  461. we know that

  462. when Christ returns,

  463. Christian,

  464. we are going to

  465. reign with him

  466. in the new heavens,

  467. in the new earth.

  468. Paul tells us

  469. in 1 Corinthians 6

  470. that the saints

  471. are going to judge

  472. the world.

  473. In Daniel chapter 7,

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  474. you remember

  475. when we went through Daniel,

  476. it tells us

  477. the kingdom

  478. and the dominion

  479. and the greatness

  480. of the kingdoms

  481. under the whole heaven

  482. shall be given

  483. to the people

  484. of the saints

  485. of the Most High.

  486. That's us, church.

  487. His kingdom

  488. shall be an everlasting kingdom

  489. and all dominions

  490. shall serve

  491. and obey him.

  492. That is our future

  493. in Christ.

  494. But again,

  495. not everyone

  496. shares this future.

  497. And those who don't

  498. may resent you

  499. for the future

  500. that you have.

  501. They may mock you.

  502. Are you serious?

  503. And what is this talk

  504. of eternal life?

  505. Are you kidding me?

  506. You?

  507. You who have no money

  508. and no status

  509. and no position

  510. of authority

  511. here on this earth,

  512. you're going to reign

  513. over me?

  514. You're going ahead of me?

  515. I say,

  516. that's exactly right.

  517. Earthly status

  518. and earthly positions

  519. of authority

  520. and earthly accumulations

  521. of wealth,

  522. that matters very little.

  523. It matters nothing

  524. in the kingdom of God.

  525. The meek will inherit

  526. the earth,

  527. Jesus tells us.

  528. God chose

  529. what is weak

  530. in the world

  531. to shame the strong,

  532. Paul tells us.

  533. It's incomprehensible

  534. to the natural mind

  535. and people may

  536. hate you

  537. for believing it.

  538. And we know

  539. the enemy certainly

  540. doesn't love your future.

  541. The enemy

  542. wants to keep you

  543. from getting there

  544. at all costs.

  545. The enemy

  546. and all who belong

  547. to him,

  548. they work as hard

  549. as they possibly can

  550. to keep you

  551. from reaching

  552. your glorious

  553. inheritance in Christ.

  554. And so we see

  555. people may hate you

  556. for the favor

  557. you have.

  558. You are loved

  559. of the Father.

  560. They may hate you

  561. for the future

  562. you have.

  563. Your glorious

  564. inheritance in Christ.

  565. And so,

  566. third,

  567. because of this,

  568. we should realize

  569. that here in a fallen world,

  570. people may seek

  571. your failure.

  572. People may seek

  573. your failure.

  574. Look there,

  575. starting in verse 12.

  576. And this dream

  577. that Joseph dreamed

  578. was clearly

  579. strike three,

  580. right?

  581. His brothers have had

  582. enough.

  583. They go out to pasture

  584. their father's flock

  585. in the field

  586. and Israel sends

  587. Joseph out

  588. to join them.

  589. Why?

  590. So that the tattletale

  591. can report back.

  592. How are they doing?

  593. How are they doing

  594. what I've asked them

  595. to do?

  596. And so he goes,

  597. but apparently

  598. it says he has a hard

  599. time finding them

  600. because they're not

  601. in Shechem

  602. where they're supposed

  603. to be.

  604. They're over in Dothan,

  605. which is not in Alabama.

  606. That's about a day's

  607. journey north of Shechem.

  608. Already he's got

  609. a little bit of dirt

  610. to share on his brothers.

  611. So he goes

  612. and he finds them

  613. and verse 18

  614. says that his brothers,

  615. they see him

  616. from afar

  617. and before he makes

  618. his way to them,

  619. they start to talk

  620. amongst themselves

  621. and they conspire

  622. against him

  623. how to kill him.

  624. They said,

  625. here comes this dreamer.

  626. Let's kill him

  627. and throw him

  628. into one of the pits

  629. and then here's

  630. what we'll do.

  631. We'll say that a fierce

  632. animal has come

  633. and devoured him

  634. and we'll see

  635. what becomes

  636. of his dreams.

  637. Except Reuben

  638. speaks up

  639. and why he's

  640. the only one

  641. I don't know

  642. but I'm grateful

  643. for Joseph's sake

  644. that he does

  645. and he says,

  646. no, no, no, no, no,

  647. shed no blood.

  648. Just throw him

  649. in the pit

  650. but don't lay

  651. a hand on him

  652. and we're told

  653. he said this

  654. because his intention

  655. was to come back

  656. and to rescue him

  657. and to bring him

  658. back to his father

  659. but regardless,

  660. all the brothers agree

  661. they think it's a good plan

  662. and so Joseph comes,

  663. they strip him

  664. of his robe,

  665. they take him,

  666. they throw him

  667. into the pit

  668. and they leave him

  669. for dead.

  670. This is a terrible

  671. injustice,

  672. isn't it?

  673. Joseph has done

  674. nothing wrong,

  675. he's an innocent man,

  676. he's their own brother,

  677. can you imagine?

  678. And before you say,

  679. well, that's crazy,

  680. I mean it is crazy,

  681. before you say

  682. I would never do

  683. anything like that,

  684. do you remember

  685. how all this started?

  686. They didn't just

  687. wake up one day

  688. and decide to throw

  689. their brother in a pit,

  690. this has been festering

  691. in their hearts

  692. for a long time,

  693. hasn't it?

  694. This tiny spark

  695. of jealousy

  696. and pride

  697. turns into hatred

  698. hatred,

  699. hatred turns

  700. into a plot

  701. to betray

  702. and to murder

  703. their brother,

  704. turns into this

  705. premeditated deception

  706. that they're going

  707. to have to tell everyone

  708. to cover it all up,

  709. you see this small

  710. spark of sin

  711. left unaddressed

  712. has now turned

  713. into this raging

  714. fire that is burning

  715. everything down

  716. around them

  717. and that's how sin

  718. works,

  719. isn't it?

  720. And on top of that,

  721. look at verse 25,

  722. they don't even seem

  723. bothered by any

  724. of this that they've

  725. done.

  726. Verse 25 says

  727. they throw their

  728. brother into a pit,

  729. they leave him for dead

  730. and what do they do?

  731. They sit down to eat

  732. and their sin

  733. has blinded them

  734. to what they've

  735. just done

  736. but they're not

  737. finished yet,

  738. are they?

  739. As they eat,

  740. they look up,

  741. they see a caravan

  742. of Ishmaelites

  743. coming from Gilead

  744. and Judah has

  745. this bright idea.

  746. Verse 26,

  747. he speaks up

  748. and he says,

  749. what profit is it

  750. if we just kill

  751. our brother

  752. and conceal his blood

  753. and you wonder,

  754. there's this moment

  755. of hope,

  756. maybe just for a moment,

  757. is Judah going to be

  758. the one to speak up

  759. and stop all of this?

  760. Judah,

  761. who's the ancestor

  762. of Christ,

  763. maybe he'll put

  764. a stop to it,

  765. right?

  766. No,

  767. look what he says,

  768. what profit is it

  769. if we just kill

  770. our brother

  771. and conceal his blood?

  772. Let's sell him instead

  773. to the Ishmaelites.

  774. Come on guys,

  775. he's our own flesh

  776. and blood after all,

  777. right?

  778. So they take Joseph

  779. out of the pit,

  780. they sell him

  781. to the Ishmaelites

  782. for 20 shekels

  783. of silver,

  784. which by the way

  785. in today's dollars

  786. would amount

  787. to about $500

  788. and they take Joseph

  789. to Egypt

  790. and Reuben,

  791. when he comes back,

  792. he's devastated

  793. and they have to come up

  794. with this deception

  795. to lie to their father

  796. when they do this,

  797. their father as well

  798. is devastated

  799. as much as anybody

  800. tried to comfort him,

  801. he won't receive it.

  802. He said,

  803. I'll just die

  804. in mourning.

  805. Do you see the impact

  806. that sin has had

  807. on this entire family?

  808. Joseph's own brothers

  809. have sought

  810. to destroy him,

  811. they wanted to make certain

  812. that his dreams

  813. did not come true

  814. and again,

  815. Christian,

  816. draw the connection

  817. to us in Christ.

  818. are we surprised

  819. when the world

  820. around us

  821. hates us?

  822. Don't you realize

  823. that since you now

  824. belong to Christ,

  825. the enemy hates you

  826. and wants to destroy you?

  827. Don't you realize

  828. that we face

  829. a great and powerful enemy

  830. that the enemy

  831. and all who belong to him

  832. actively seek your downfall?

  833. The way the New Testament

  834. talks about the Christian life,

  835. we're not in peacetime,

  836. Christian.

  837. We are in wartime.

  838. The enemy wants to keep you

  839. from the love of God

  840. if that were at all possible.

  841. He wants to keep you

  842. from your inheritance

  843. if that were at all possible.

  844. And one tool

  845. in the toolbox

  846. that they use,

  847. one of their primary weapons

  848. that they use,

  849. is suffering

  850. in the life

  851. of the believer.

  852. In their hands,

  853. suffering

  854. is a means

  855. to destroy you

  856. and stop the spread

  857. of the gospel

  858. through you.

  859. But,

  860. Christians

  861. think about suffering

  862. differently.

  863. We know

  864. because we're told

  865. in the pages of Scripture

  866. nothing

  867. can separate you

  868. from the love of God

  869. in Christ Jesus

  870. our Lord.

  871. Not even the worst

  872. imaginable suffering

  873. in your life.

  874. we're told

  875. nothing can keep us

  876. from this glorious

  877. inheritance ahead of us.

  878. It is kept

  879. in heaven

  880. for you

  881. who by God's power

  882. are being guarded

  883. through faith

  884. but for a salvation

  885. ready to be revealed

  886. in the last time.

  887. I love the story

  888. of Acts chapter 5.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  889. Peter

  890. and the apostles

  891. they're filled

  892. with this new boldness

  893. to go and preach Christ

  894. and the high priests

  895. and the Pharisees

  896. they're all telling them

  897. they've got to stop

  898. talking about Jesus.

  899. And so they beat them up

  900. and they charge them

  901. not to talk about Jesus anymore

  902. they let them go

  903. they just tear them

  904. to bits

  905. and how do they respond?

  906. It says in verse 41

  907. they left the presence

  908. of the council

  909. rejoicing

  910. that they were counted

  911. worthy to suffer

  912. dishonor

  913. for the name.

  914. And every day

  915. in the temple

  916. and from house to house

  917. they did not cease

  918. teaching and preaching

  919. that the Christ

  920. is Jesus.

  921. they rejoiced

  922. that they were counted

  923. worthy to suffer

  924. for the name of Christ.

  925. How can they see it that way?

  926. It's because in all of this

  927. we know

  928. fourth

  929. and finally

  930. in all things

  931. God

  932. seeks

  933. your welfare.

  934. In all

  935. things

  936. believer

  937. God

  938. seeks

  939. your

  940. welfare.

  941. this is the perspective

  942. that we're called to have.

  943. Let's finish our verses.

  944. We're told

  945. count it all

  946. joy

  947. brothers

  948. when you meet trials

  949. of various kinds.

  950. Why?

  951. For you know

  952. that the testing

  953. of your faith

  954. produces

  955. steadfastness.

  956. Do not be surprised

  957. at the fiery trial

  958. when it comes upon you

  959. to test you

  960. as though something

  961. strange were happening

  962. to you

  963. but rejoice

  964. in so far

  965. as you share

  966. Christ's sufferings

  967. that you may also

  968. rejoice and be glad

  969. when his glory

  970. is revealed.

  971. We rejoice

  972. in our sufferings

  973. why?

  974. Knowing that

  975. suffering

  976. produces endurance

  977. and endurance

  978. produces character

  979. and character

  980. produces hope

  981. and more than that

  982. he says

  983. I consider

  984. that the sufferings

  985. of this present time

  986. are not worth

  987. comparing

  988. with the glory

  989. that is to be

  990. revealed

  991. to us.

  992. Church

  993. we know

  994. we rejoice

  995. to know

  996. that our God

  997. is at work

  998. in every moment

  999. of our lives

  1000. even the most

  1001. difficult moments

  1002. of our lives

  1003. for good.

  1004. I hate to spoil

  1005. how all this story

  1006. works out

1007. but we have to go there

  1008. because it helps us

  1009. frame this whole story

  1010. of Joseph

  1011. in chapter 50

  1012. verse 20

1013. all the way at the end

1014. but we get the point.

  1015. Chapter 50

  1016. verse 20

  1017. Joseph gives us

  1018. the Christian perspective

  1019. on our suffering

  1020. and he says

  1021. to his brothers

  1022. you meant evil

  1023. against me

  1024. but God

  1025. meant it

  1026. for good.

  1027. You meant evil

  1028. against me

  1029. but God

  1030. meant it

  1031. for good.

  1032. His brothers

  1033. meant evil

  1034. against him

  1035. but even

  1036. in this

  1037. don't you see

  1038. God is at work

  1039. for good.

  1040. God is at work

  1041. to save

  1042. Joseph.

  1043. He worked

  1044. even through

  1045. the greedy

  1046. hearts of his brothers

  1047. to have him

  1048. sold into slavery.

  1049. He was at work

  1050. even in their plans

  1051. he had bigger plans

  1052. to send Joseph

  1053. ahead of them

  1054. to Egypt

  1055. not only just

  1056. to save Joseph

  1057. but to save

  1058. all of his family

  1059. from a famine

  1060. that they have

  1061. no idea

  1062. is right around

  1063. the corner.

  1064. And you zoom out

  1065. even bigger than that

  1066. go to Exodus

1067. and what do we see there?

  1068. We see God's plan

1069. is to bring his people

  1070. into Egypt

  1071. so that he might

  1072. redeem them

  1073. out of Egypt

  1074. he might display

  1075. his glory

  1076. in Egypt

  1077. and call them

  1078. to himself

  1079. as his own people

  1080. God is at work

  1081. in all of it

  1082. to point us forward

  1083. to an even greater

  1084. act of redemption

  1085. in the gospel

  1086. of Christ.

  1087. Now how much

1088. of this do you think

  1089. Joseph was aware of

  1090. in the moment

  1091. while he's down

  1092. in the pit?

  1093. None of it.

  1094. But church

  1095. we have the bigger

  1096. picture here

  1097. God is always

  1098. doing infinitely

  1099. more than we

  1100. possibly are

  1101. even remotely

  1102. the slightest bit

  1103. aware of

  1104. at every moment

  1105. of our life.

  1106. God is working

  1107. redemption

  1108. here

  1109. even in this

  1110. act of horrible

  1111. evil.

  1112. He's at work

  1113. to magnify

1114. the glory of his name

  1115. even in this

  1116. dark moment

  1117. where sin

  1118. and evil

  1119. and injustice

  1120. and suffering

  1121. seem to take

  1122. center stage.

  1123. God

  1124. permits

  1125. what he hates

  1126. to accomplish

  1127. what he loves.

  1128. What could that

  1129. possibly be?

  1130. Two aims

  1131. of God

  1132. in our suffering

  1133. the display

  1134. of his glory

  1135. and the eternal

  1136. good

  1137. of his people.

  1138. The display

  1139. of his glory

  1140. and the eternal

  1141. good

  1142. of his people.

  1143. I'm so thankful

  1144. aren't you?

  1145. God loves

  1146. our eternal

  1147. good

  1148. more than

  1149. our temporary

  1150. comfort.

  1151. The thief

  1152. takes a knife

  1153. he takes

  1154. suffering

  1155. like a knife

  1156. and he cuts

  1157. us to kill

  1158. us

  1159. but the Lord

  1160. like a skilled

  1161. surgeon

  1162. takes that

  1163. same knife

  1164. and he cuts

  1165. us to heal

  1166. us

  1167. to make us

  1168. well

  1169. and to make

  1170. us whole

  1171. and to make

  1172. us like

  1173. Christ

  1174. who is

  1175. by the way

  1176. right at the

  1177. heart of

  1178. Joseph's story.

  1179. Do you see how

  1180. all this points

  1181. forward to

  1182. Jesus?

  1183. Joseph's story

  1184. is ultimately

  1185. about

  1186. Jesus.

  1187. Jesus Christ

  1188. is the beloved

  1189. son

  1190. of the

  1191. father

  1192. robed

  1193. in glory

  1194. his only

  1195. begotten

  1196. son.

  1197. Jesus is

  1198. the one

  1199. who was

  1200. prophesied

  1201. over and

  1202. over and

  1203. over again

  1204. that this

  1205. Messiah will

  1206. be exalted

  1207. as king

  1208. over all

  1209. the earth

  1210. and Jesus

  1211. is the one

  1212. who came

  1213. humbly

  1214. to his own

  1215. brothers

  1216. and how

  1217. was he

  1218. received?

  1219. He was

  1220. welcomed

  1221. with hatred

  1222. and envy

  1223. and betrayal

  1224. and greed

  1225. and ultimately

  1226. Jesus was

  1227. delivered over

  1228. to death.

  1229. Those who

  1230. did not

  1231. belong to

  1232. him

  1233. hated him

  1234. and rejected

  1235. him

  1236. and crucified

  1237. him

  1238. and put him

  1239. down in the

  1240. pit of death

  1241. but praise

  1242. God

  1243. and the

  1244. greatest

  1245. injustice

  1246. in the world

  1247. in the death

  1248. of Christ

  1249. was at the

  1250. very same

  1251. time

  1252. the greatest

  1253. good ever

  1254. accomplished.

  1255. The greatest

  1256. moment of

  1257. darkness

  1258. putting the

  1259. son of God

  1260. to death

  1261. was at the

  1262. very same

  1263. time in the

  1264. plan of God

  1265. the greatest

  1266. victory.

  1267. Satan's

  1268. plan of

  1269. destruction

  1270. was at the

  1271. very same

  1272. time God's

  1273. great plan

  1274. of redemption

  1275. for sinners

  1276. like us.

  1277. He died

  1278. that he might

  1279. conquer death.

  1280. He became

  1281. sin so that

  1282. he might

  1283. rescue us

  1284. from the

  1285. powers of

  1286. sin.

  1287. he was

  1288. raised to

  1289. new life

  1290. so that

  1291. in him

  1292. we too

  1293. might be

  1294. raised to

  1295. newness

  1296. of life.

  1297. What man

  1298. meant for

  1299. evil

  1300. God

  1301. meant

  1302. for good.

  1303. This Christ

  1304. is risen

  1305. and reigning

  1306. now and one

  1307. day we know

  1308. church he will

  1309. come again

  1310. and every

  1311. knee will

  1312. bow

  1313. and every

  1314. tongue will

  1315. confess that

  1316. Jesus Christ

  1317. is Lord

  1318. to the glory

  1319. of God

  1320. the Father.

  1321. Do you

  1322. know this

  1323. Savior by

  1324. faith?

  1325. If not

  1326. what keeps

  1327. you from

  1328. coming to

  1329. him now?

  1330. The truth

  1331. is we will

  1332. suffer in

  1333. this life.

  1334. I'm sure you

  1335. all have

  1336. stories of

  1337. your own

  1338. life right

  1339. now of

  1340. suffering and

  1341. injustice but

  1342. in him and

  1343. only in

  1344. him can we

  1345. have this

  1346. perspective on

  1347. our suffering

  1348. that whatever

  1349. we face here

  1350. and now we

  1351. believe all

  1352. things work

  1353. together for

  1354. good for

  1355. those who

  1356. love God

  1357. and are

  1358. called according

  1359. to his

  1360. purposes.

  1361. Father we

  1362. praise you for

  1363. this hope that

  1364. we can have in

  1365. the face of

  1366. great injustice

  1367. and great

  1368. suffering.

  1369. Lord whatever

  1370. trials are

  1371. brought into

  1372. our life

  1373. Lord in your

  1374. hands God

  1375. are meant

  1376. for good.

  1377. While the

  1378. enemy would

  1379. seek to

  1380. destroy us

  1381. Father you

  1382. seek to

  1383. mold us

  1384. into the

  1385. image of

  1386. Christ and

  1387. so we

  1388. rejoice in

  1389. our sufferings

  1390. yet we

  1391. pray Father

  1392. for the day

  1393. when Christ

  1394. would come

  1395. and put an

  1396. end to

  1397. all our

  1398. suffering and

  1399. all our

  1400. trials and

  1401. we would be

  1402. with you

  1403. free from

  1404. sin and

  1405. death forever.

  1406. We praise you

  1407. for this in

  1408. Christ Jesus

  1409. name.

  1410. Amen.
