  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to Genesis chapter 38.

    Genesis 38 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. It happened at that time that Judah went down from his brothers and turned aside to a certain Adulamite, whose name was Hira.

  4. There Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shua.

  5. He took her and went into her, and she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er.

  6. She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan.

  7. Yet again she bore a son, and she called his name Shelah.

  8. Judah was in Haseb when she bore him.

  9. And Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

  10. But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord put him to death.

  11. Then Judah said to Onan,

  12. Go into your brother's wife and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her and raise up offspring for your brother.

  13. But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, so whenever he went into his brother's wife,

  14. he would waste the semen on the ground so as not to give offspring to his brother.

  15. And what he did was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and he put him to death also.

  16. Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law,

  17. Remain a widow in your father's house till Shelah, my son, grows up.

  18. For he feared that he would die like his brothers.

  19. So Tamar went and remained in her father's house.

  20. In the course of time, the wife of Judah, she was daughter, died.

  21. When Judah was comforted, he went up to Timnah to his sheep shearers,

  22. he and his friend Hira, the Adulamite.

  23. And when Tamar was told,

  24. Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep,

  25. she took off her widow's garments and covered herself with a veil,

  26. wrapping herself up, and sat at the entrance to Inam,

  27. which is on the road to Timnah.

  28. For she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she had not been given to him in marriage.

  29. When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

  30. He turned to her at the roadside and said,

  31. Come, let me come into you.

  32. For he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law.

  33. She said, What will you give me that you may come into me?

  34. He answered, I will send you a young goat from the flock.

  35. And she said, If you give me a pledge until you send it.

  36. He said, What pledge shall I give you?

  37. She replied, Your signet and your cord and your staff that is in your hand.

  38. So he gave them to her and went into her, and she conceived by him.

  39. Then she arose and went away, and taking off her veil,

  40. she put on the garments of her widowhood.

  41. When Judah sent the young goat by his friend, the Adulamite,

  42. to take back the pledge from the woman's hand, he did not find her.

  43. And he asked the men of the place,

  44. Where is the cult prostitute who is at Inam on the roadside?

  45. And they said, No cult prostitute has been here.

  46. So he returned to Judah and said, I have not found her.

  47. And also the men of the place said, No cult prostitute has been here.

  48. And Judah replied, Let her keep the things as her own, or we shall be laughed at.

  49. You see, I sent this young goat, and you did not find her.

  50. About three months later, Judah was told,

  51. Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has been immoral.

  52. Moreover, she is pregnant by immorality.

  53. And Judah said, Bring her out and let her be burned.

  54. As she was being brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law,

  55. By the man to whom these belong, I am pregnant.

  56. And she said, Please identify whose these are, the signet and the cord and the staff.

  57. And then Judah identified them and said,

  58. She is more righteous than I, since I did not give to her to my son Shelah.

  59. And he did not know her again.

  60. When the time of her labor came, there were twins in her womb.

  61. And when she was in labor, one put out a hand,

  62. And the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying,

  63. This one came out first.

  64. But as he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out.

  65. And she said, What a breach you have made for yourself.

  66. Therefore his name was called Perez.

  67. Afterward, his brother came out with a scarlet thread on his hand,

  68. and his name was called Zerah.

  69. Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt,

  70. and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian,

  71. had bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had brought him down there.

  72. The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man,

  73. and he was in the house of his Egyptian master.

  74. His master saw that the Lord was with him,

  75. and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands.

  76. So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him,

  77. and he made him overseer of his house,

  78. and put him in charge of all that he had.

  79. From the time that he had made him overseer in his house,

  80. and over all that he had,

  81. the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake.

  82. The blessing of the Lord was on all that he had,

  83. in house and in field.

  84. So he left all that he had in Joseph's charge,

  85. and because of him,

  86. he had no concern about anything but the food he ate.

  87. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.

  88. And after a time,

  89. his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said,

  90. Lie with me.

  91. But he refused and said to his master's wife,

  92. Behold, because of me,

  93. my master has no concern about anything in the house,

  94. and he has put everything that he has in my charge.

  95. He is not greater in this house than I am,

  96. nor has he kept back anything from me except you,

  97. because you are his wife.

  98. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?

  99. And as she spoke to Joseph day after day,

  100. he would not listen to her,

  101. to lie beside her,

  102. or even to be with her.

  103. But one day,

  104. when he went into the house to do his work,

  105. and none of the men of the house was there in the house,

  106. she caught him by his garment,

  107. saying,

  108. Lie with me.

  109. But he left his garment in her hand,

  110. and fled,

  111. and got out of the house.

  112. And as soon as she saw that he had left his garment in her hand,

  113. and had fled out of the house,

  114. she called to the men of her household,

  115. and said to them,

  116. See,

  117. He has brought among us a Hebrew to laugh at us.

  118. He came into me to lie with me,

  119. and I cried out with a loud voice.

  120. And as soon as he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried out,

  121. he left his garment beside me and fled,

  122. and got out of the house.

  123. Then she laid up his garment by her,

  124. until his master came home.

  125. And she told him the same story,

  126. saying,

  127. The Hebrew servant,

  128. whom you have brought among us,

  129. came into me to laugh at me.

  130. But as soon as I lifted up my voice and cried,

  131. he left his garment beside me,

  132. and fled out of the house.

  133. As soon as his master heard the words that his wife spoke to him,

  134. This is the way your servant has treated me,

  135. his anger was kindled.

  136. And Joseph's master took him,

  137. and put him into the prison,

  138. the place where the king's prisoners were confined.

  139. And he was there in prison.

  140. But the Lord was with Joseph,

  141. and showed him steadfast love,

  142. and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

  143. And the keeper of the prison put Joseph in charge

  144. of all the prisoners who were in the prison.

  145. Whatever was done there,

  146. he was the one who did it.

  147. And the keeper of the prison paid no attention

  148. to anything that was in Joseph's charge,

  149. because the Lord was with him.

  150. And whatever he did,

  151. the Lord made it succeed.

  152. The grass withers,

  153. and the flower fades,

  154. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  155. Father God,

  156. we ask now your blessing on the preaching of the word.

  157. Give us ears to hear,

  158. and fertile hearts, Lord.

  159. Fertile soil for the truth of the gospel.

  160. We pray in Jesus' name.

  161. Amen.

  162. You may be seated.

  163. I hope you prayed for your pastor this week.

  164. Preaching the way that we do,

  165. working through books of the Bible,

  166. does not give me the luxury of skipping over

  167. difficult text or hard subject matters.

  168. And it's sometimes shocking when we read passages like this,

  169. because this is not G-rated material, is it?

  170. This is an honest and raw, unfiltered look

  171. at the ugliness of sin.

  172. And the truth is,

  173. even though we are far removed from the context of Genesis,

  174. here are thousands of years removed,

  175. in a different place,

  176. in a different culture,

  177. in a different continent,

  178. not much really has changed at all, has it?

  179. We live in the same sinful world

  180. as Judah and Tamar and Joseph,

  181. and just like them,

  182. we live in a culture that openly celebrates

  183. and embraces all sorts of wickedness,

  184. especially sexual wickedness,

  185. which seems to be right at the center

  186. of our passage this morning.

  187. And when you realize that,

  188. it makes us ask,

  189. well, what is the hope

  190. for such a wicked and sinful people?

  191. And for God's people,

  192. the church,

  193. who live right there in the middle

  194. of such great wickedness,

  195. well, what hope do we have

  196. for resisting the temptations of the world?

  197. The hope that we have,

  198. and the hope for sinners of all kinds,

  199. is the gospel of God's grace in Jesus Christ.

  200. And so as we take a look here

  201. at this difficult passage,

  202. and my goal here this morning is simple,

  203. is to help us see from these two ugly passages

  204. the power of the grace of God.

  205. And what we'll see as we look through this together

  206. is two works of God's grace.

  207. This will be our outline this morning.

  208. If you're taking notes,

  209. we'll see two works of God's grace.

  210. One, God works grace from the wreckage of sin.

  211. And two, God works grace for the war with sin.

  212. First, let's take a look at chapter 38,

  213. and we see here,

  214. God works grace from the wreckage of sin.

  215. And what I want you to notice here

  216. as we work our way through this chapter

  217. is the increasing wickedness of the people.

  218. The increasing spiral downward into sin and wickedness.

  219. And this has been the trajectory ever since the Garden of Eden,

  220. Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  221. Mankind has multiplied,

  222. and with it, sin has multiplied on the earth.

  223. We're coming out of a story of great wickedness.

  224. Joseph is just sold into slavery.

  225. He was betrayed by his own brothers.

  226. He's now in Egypt.

  227. But that spiral, it doesn't stop there.

  228. We get a little detour here,

  229. and we visit Judah, one of the brothers.

  230. Look there to verse 1, chapter 38.

  231. It says,

  232. Judah, one of Joseph's brothers,

  233. he goes to Hira,

  234. and he sees the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua.

  235. And what does he do?

  236. He takes her.

  237. He is intimate with her.

  238. She conceives.

  239. She bears a son.

  240. She names him Air.

  241. And then again, she bears a son and names him Onan.

  242. And again, she bears a son and names him Shelah.

  243. This is the first offense here in the passage.

  244. Judah is taking wives from the Canaanites.

  245. And haven't we already seen?

  246. That's a recipe for disaster.

  247. Hasn't Esau already shown us

  248. that that's a no-go here for the people of God?

  249. But also just notice here the graphic way

  250. that it describes how Judah goes about this.

  251. He is taking what his flesh desires.

  252. He's operating based on what the desires of his flesh are.

  253. This is the same pattern that we've seen ever since the garden.

  254. See, good, take.

  255. See, good, take.

  256. And that's how the sinful flesh operates.

  257. You see and you take whatever it is that you want

  258. and then you figure out the rest later.

  259. But it gets worse.

  260. Fast forward some years later.

  261. Now, Air, his oldest son, is old enough to marry.

  262. And verse 6, it says,

  263. Judah takes a wife for Air.

  264. Her name was Tamar.

  265. But verse 7, it says,

  266. Air, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord.

  267. And the Lord put him to death.

  268. Now, what in the world was he up to?

  269. Now, we're not told.

  270. We don't know exactly what Air was up to.

  271. But apparently, his wickedness was so great

  272. that the Lord puts a stop to it right then and there.

  273. And he puts him to death.

  274. But it continues to spiral and get worse.

  275. Verse 8,

  276. Judah tells his second son, Onan,

  277. to go and perform the duty of a brother-in-law

  278. and raise up offspring for his brother.

  279. But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his.

  280. And so you can read the text.

  281. Do you see what happens?

  282. He refused to do what his father told him to do.

  283. And verse 10 says,

  284. What he did was wicked in the sight of the Lord.

  285. And he put him to death also.

  286. This is now two kids.

  287. Struck down, put to death by the hand of the Lord

  288. because of their wickedness.

  289. And I wonder, are we surprised by this?

  290. One of the kids came in to the grow class just a little bit ago

  291. and they asked this question about Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5.

  292. If I lie, will I die?

  293. If we're shocked by this sort of immediate judgment of the Lord,

  294. I think one reason might be

  295. maybe we've lost our sense of the seriousness of sin.

  296. Maybe we've lost our sense of the holiness of our God.

  297. Maybe we've grown so accustomed to the patience of God

  298. that God's judgment and His wrath is what seems out of place.

  299. But isn't this what God told Adam and Eve would be the consequence of their sin?

  300. And the day you eat of it, you will surely, what?

  301. You will die.

  302. And doesn't Romans 6.23 say the wages of sin is what?

  303. Is death.

  304. Well, the fact is God takes sin infinitely more seriously than we do.

  305. And the hard, unpopular truth is that, yes, we deserve death for our sin.

  306. Will you die if you tell a lie?

  307. I'm not sure.

  308. But do you deserve to die?

  309. Yes, you do.

  310. We are guilty, all of us, every one of us,

  311. are guilty of sin against a holy God.

  312. We deserve hell for our sin.

  313. And the only reason you are not there right now

  314. is either because God has been gracious to you

  315. in saving you and redeeming you in Christ,

  316. or He is being patient with you

  317. in delaying that judgment that we deserve

  318. so that you might, by His grace, repent of your sin.

  319. Now, we're often surprised by the judgments of God,

  320. but the truth is we ought to be much more surprised

  321. by the patience of God towards sinners like us.

  322. And it still gets even worse.

  323. The spiral continues.

  324. Look to verse 11.

  325. Judah was afraid that his youngest son, Shelah,

  326. would grow up and die just like his brothers.

  327. Seems like a valid concern at this point.

  328. And so he tells Tamar to go back to her father's house

  329. and wait until he grows up.

  330. This is his last offspring.

  331. This is one last chance to keep the family line going.

  332. But look what happened starting in verse 12.

  333. It says,

  334. In the course of time, Judah's wife dies.

  335. And so he goes up to Timnah with his buddy, Hira.

  336. And when Tamar hears about it, she hatches a plan.

  337. Look what she does.

  338. And she takes off her widow's garments

  339. and she covers herself with a veil.

  340. No one can tell that it's her.

  341. She sits at the entrance to a name on the road to Timnah.

  342. And when Judah sees her,

  343. she looks good to him.

  344. And he goes and he wants to take what his flesh desires.

  345. And so what does he do?

  346. He goes and to put it politely,

  347. he asks for some of her time.

  348. And in response,

  349. she says,

  350. Well, what will you give to me?

  351. He says,

  352. I'll bring you a young goat from the flock.

  353. But she says,

  354. Well, if you give me a pledge,

  355. you give me your signet

  356. and give me your cord

  357. and give me your staff

  358. and then I'll take that as a guarantee,

  359. a sort of down payment

  360. that you're going to be acting good on your word.

  361. And so he does.

  362. Verse 18 says,

  363. She conceived by him.

  364. And now this messed up family

  365. has just got even worse, hasn't it?

  366. You have two sons dead because of their sin.

  367. You have one son that's still single.

  368. He's waiting on his dad to step up

  369. and provide a wife for him.

  370. You have one daughter-in-law

  371. that's waiting on dad to keep his word.

  372. And meanwhile,

  373. dad just got the daughter-in-law pregnant

  374. and doesn't even know him.

  375. This is more dramatic

  376. than any soap opera

  377. you're going to find on TV.

  378. Now, don't you love

  379. how realistic the Bible is

  380. in presenting the sin

  381. and the mess of the world?

  382. And when Judah does wind up

  383. sending the goat

  384. to pay what he thinks is the prostitute,

  385. no one can find her.

  386. She's not there.

  387. And so Judah, verse 23,

  388. says he just decides

  389. to cut his losses.

  390. He doesn't want to be embarrassed.

  391. Just let her keep the stuff

  392. and we'll just all move on, right?

  393. Fast forward three months later

  394. and now we have a problem.

  395. About three months later,

  396. Judah was told,

  397. Tamar, your daughter-in-law,

  398. has been immoral.

  399. Moreover, she is pregnant by immorality.

  400. There's no hiding it at this point.

  401. And all of a sudden,

  402. all of his hidden secret sin

  403. is all about to come out.

  404. It says Judah is angry.

  405. And his daughter-in-law

  406. has done this unspeakable thing.

  407. He recognizes that this is a great sin.

  408. His daughter-in-law has been intimate

  409. with someone outside

  410. of God's ordained bounds of marriage.

  411. And moreover, she's pregnant.

  412. She's going to bring shame

  413. on the whole family.

  414. And so in what he thinks

  415. is righteous anger,

  416. he orders for her to be brought out

  417. and burned.

  418. He is about to judge her

  419. for her wickedness.

  420. But look what happens.

  421. As she's being brought out,

  422. she sends word to her father-in-law

  423. and says,

  424. By the man to whom these belong,

  425. I am pregnant.

  426. And what does she do?

  427. She holds out the signet.

  428. And she holds out the cord.

  429. And she holds out the staff.

  430. And she says,

  431. Tell me who these belong to.

  432. And Judah identifies them and says,

  433. Surely she is more righteous than I am.

  434. Because I did not give to her my son,

  435. Sheila.

  436. And he did not know her again.

  437. You see, his sin found him out.

  438. The bill eventually came due.

  439. And church, it always does.

  440. Sin has made a mess of this family,

  441. hasn't it?

  442. It is clear.

  443. Even many years later,

  444. after the Garden of Eden,

  445. sin's curse still remains.

  446. Sin's power still remains.

  447. Sin's presence is there,

  448. corrupting everything it touches.

  449. Sin's consequences still remain.

  450. It is wrecking this family.

  451. And you look at this story,

  452. and you just think,

  453. Man, this all just seems so dark,

  454. doesn't it?

  455. But we should be reminded that

  456. even in this darkness, church,

  457. God's promise still remains.

  458. Hasn't God promised blessing in place of curse?

  459. Hasn't God promised all the way back in the garden

  460. that He will send one

  461. who's going to crush the serpent

  462. and make all things right again?

  463. And it's in moments like this

  464. that make you ask,

  465. Well, God, when are you going to do it?

  466. Can't you come and act?

  467. How are you going to do this?

  468. This looks so bleak.

  469. I mean, your own people

  470. are no different than the world around them.

  471. What hope is there?

  472. What good could God possibly work

  473. out of a mess like this?

  474. Look there to verse 27.

  475. The unfathomable mystery here

  476. in this chapter

  477. is that our God

  478. has worked redemption.

  479. Out of this mess.

  480. Why is this story here?

  481. Don't you wonder?

  482. We're here in Joseph's story

  483. and we take this little rabbit trail here

  484. to just put Judah's sin

  485. out in the forefront

  486. and talk about him.

  487. Why is this story here?

  488. It's here to show us

  489. where our Savior came from.

  490. Look there to verse 27.

  491. It says,

  492. When the time of her labor came,

  493. there were twins in her womb.

  494. And when she was in labor,

  495. one put out a hand.

  496. The midwife takes it

  497. and ties a scarlet thread

  498. on his hand

  499. and says,

  500. This one came out first.

  501. But he comes back

  502. and his brother comes out

  503. and they name him Perez.

  504. And afterward,

  505. the one with the scarlet thread

  506. comes out

  507. and they name him Zerah.

  508. What is the point?

  509. If you flip ahead

  510. to Matthew chapter 1,

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  511. and I think you'll see it.

  512. You know,

  513. so often we just skip past

  514. these genealogies

  515. and I don't blame you.

  516. There's a lot of names.

  517. A lot of them are strange.

  518. But pay attention

  519. to what Matthew shows us

  520. here in Matthew chapter 1.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  521. He says,

  522. This is the book

  523. of the genealogy

  524. of Jesus Christ.

  525. The son of David.

  526. The son of Abraham.

  527. Why is he naming those figures?

  528. He is anchoring

  529. the promises

  530. that God made to David.

  531. The promises

  532. that God made to Abraham.

  533. And he's saying

  534. this Jesus

  535. is the heir

  536. of all the promises

  537. of God.

  538. And then he traces

  539. the family tree.

  540. He says,

  541. Abraham,

  542. he was the father of Isaac.

  543. Isaac was the father

  544. of Jacob.

  545. Jacob,

  546. the father of Judah

  547. and his brothers.

  548. Judah,

  549. the father of Perez

  550. and Zerah

  551. by Tamar.

  552. And Perez,

  553. the father of Hezron.

  554. Hezron,

  555. the father of Ram.

  556. Ram,

  557. the father of Aminadab.

  558. On and on it goes

  559. down to David,

  560. the king.

  561. And then from there

  562. all the way from David

  563. all the way to Jesus Christ.

  564. Do you see what God has done?

  565. Out of this incredibly ugly mess of sin

  566. and brokenness

  567. from this act of sexual immorality

  568. and foolishness,

  569. what has God done?

  570. God has brought about

  571. the birth of the Savior of sinners.

  572. Out of the wreckage of sin

  573. God has worked redemption

  574. for sinners.

  575. What man meant for evil,

  576. God meant for good.

  577. Jesus Christ is a descendant of Judah

  578. from Tamar.

  579. You see,

  580. our Lord was born

  581. into a line of sin.

  582. Jesus came right into the experience

  583. of our wicked world

  584. yet without sin.

  585. You see,

  586. Jesus stepped right

  587. into our mess.

  588. No other religion

  589. talks about their God

  590. this way,

  591. by the way.

  592. Do you realize that?

  593. No other religion

  594. talks about their God

  595. like this.

  596. Every other religion

  597. tells you to

  598. clean yourself up,

  599. make yourself better,

  600. improve yourself

  601. so that you might

  602. inch your way

  603. closer to God,

  604. that you might

  605. climb the ladder

  606. and make your way

  607. to God.

  608. The good people

  609. make it up top,

  610. right?

  611. That's how most world religions work.

  612. Not the gospel of God's grace.

  613. Undeserved blessing

  614. to a sinful world.

  615. Unmerited favor

  616. to a sinful people.

  617. Jesus comes from a long line

  618. of messed up sinful people

  619. just like us.

  620. And when he came,

  621. what did he do?

  622. He went straight to the messed up

  623. and straight to the broken

  624. and straight to the sinners

  625. and the tax collectors.

  626. He ate and drank

  627. with sinners

  628. and he told everyone else,

  629. don't you understand?

  630. The healthy don't need

  631. a physician.

  632. The sick need a physician.

  633. I came to save sinners.

  634. This is grace

  635. at work, Christian.

  636. When we see the gross immorality

  637. of the world

  638. in which we live,

  639. we see the way

  640. that our culture

  641. embraces all sorts

  642. of wickedness

  643. and when it seems dark

  644. and bleak

  645. and you just wonder

  646. what in the world

  647. can we do?

  648. We should remember

  649. our God

  650. has already provided

  651. the answer.

  652. It's the gospel

  653. of his grace

  654. in Jesus Christ.

  655. This passage is here

  656. to show us

  657. how God works grace

  658. out of the wreckage

  659. of sin

  660. but that's not all.

  661. Second,

  662. we should also see

  663. that God gives grace

  664. for the war

  665. with sin.

  666. Here we look

  667. to chapter 39

  668. and now the attention

  669. is shifting back

  670. to Joseph.

  671. We're veering back

  672. on course here.

  673. Look there

  674. to chapter 39.

  675. He reminds us

  676. Joseph had been

  677. brought down

  678. to Egypt

  679. and Potiphar

  680. an officer of Pharaoh

  681. the captain of the guard

  682. he bought him

  683. from the Ishmaelites

  684. and he put him

  685. in charge of everything.

  686. Verse 2 says

  687. the Lord was with Joseph

  688. and even there

  689. in captivity

  690. he became

  691. a successful man

  692. and he was

  693. in the house

  694. of his Egyptian master.

  695. Even in Egypt

  696. the Lord is blessing

  697. and prospering Joseph.

  698. It says his master

  699. sees that the Lord

  700. was with him

  701. and he understands

  702. that the Lord

  703. is causing all

  704. that he does

  705. to succeed

  706. in his hands.

  707. So Joseph

  708. found favor

  709. in his sight

  710. and attended him

  711. and he made him

  712. overseer of his house.

  713. He put him in charge

  714. of all that he had

  715. and the Lord

  716. blessed the Egyptians

  717. house for Joseph's sake.

  718. You see

  719. already through Joseph

  720. God is already

  721. making himself

  722. known in Egypt.

  723. You see how the nations

  724. are already

  725. getting a taste

  726. of who this God is

  727. and how he works

  728. through his people.

  729. We're already

  730. seeing the blessing

  731. of God

  732. to the nations

  733. through the people

  734. of God.

  735. It's all coming

  736. to pass

  737. but there's a problem

  738. here.

  739. It says Joseph

  740. was handsome

  741. in form

  742. and appearance.

  743. I've never really

  744. had that problem.

  745. Maybe you have.

  746. But the reason

  747. why that's a problem

  748. is because Joseph

  749. is living again

  750. right here in the middle

  751. of this sexually

  752. confused

  753. sinful

  754. flesh driven

  755. world

  756. where people

  757. act on their impulses

  758. and ask questions

  759. later.

  760. So verse 7

  761. it says that

  762. after a time

  763. his master's wife

  764. cast her eyes

  765. on Joseph

  766. and invites him

  767. to lie

  768. with her.

  769. Think about this

  770. with me for a minute.

  771. In theory

  772. the setup

  773. seems pretty simple

  774. doesn't it?

  775. She probably knew

  776. the best times

  777. to come and to go

  778. and she knew

  779. when that opportunity

  780. would be right.

  781. She knew

  782. when her husband

  783. would probably

  784. have no idea

  785. what was going on.

  786. Potiphar

  787. trusts him.

  788. He has

  789. no reason

  790. to suspect

  791. that Joseph

  792. would be up

  793. to anything

  794. with his wife.

  795. If Joseph

  796. wanted to do this

  797. he could do it.

  798. The opportunity

  799. is right there

  800. in front of him

  801. and he has a decision

  802. to make

  803. doesn't he?

  804. Verse 8

  805. look what he does.

  806. Verse 8

  807. says

  808. he refused

  809. and he says

  810. listen

  811. my master

  812. trusts me.

  813. He's put

  814. everything

  815. that he has

  816. in my charge.

  817. He's not

  818. greater in his

  819. own house

  820. than I am

  821. and in fact

  822. the only thing

  823. that he's kept

  824. back from me

  825. is you.

  826. And look

  827. what he says

  828. he says

  829. how then

  830. can I do

  831. this great

  832. wickedness

  833. and sin

  834. against

  835. God?

  836. Joseph

  837. in contrast

  838. to Judah

  839. is aware

  840. of sin's

  841. dangers

  842. right away.

  843. Right away

  844. the temptation

  845. comes

  846. right away

  847. he says

  848. no

  849. and why?

  850. It's because

  851. he's seeing

  852. things rightly.

  853. He's not acting

  854. on impulse

  855. he's not acting

  856. on the desires

  857. of his flesh

  858. like Judah

  859. he sees

  860. the danger

  861. here

  862. that this

  863. is a sin

  864. against my

  865. neighbor

  866. my master

  867. how could

  868. I wrong

  869. him

  870. and more

  871. importantly

  872. than that

  873. he sees

  874. this ultimately

  875. as a great

  876. sin

  877. against

  878. the Lord.

  879. As she spoke

  880. to Joseph

  881. day

  882. after day

  883. after day

  884. he would not

  885. listen to her

  886. to lie beside her

  887. or even

  888. to be with

  889. her.

  890. She continues

  891. to present him

  892. with the opportunity

  893. to sin

  894. day

  895. after day

  896. after day

  897. after day

  898. but day

  899. after day

  900. after day

  901. he does not

  902. even listen

  903. to her.

  904. He won't

  905. lie beside her

  906. he will not

  907. even be

  908. with her

  909. he gives

  910. her no

  911. opportunity

  912. whatsoever

  913. for her

  914. to prevail

  915. in her

  916. temptations

  917. to sin

  918. against his

  919. master

  920. and ultimately

  921. against the

  922. Lord.

  923. See this

  924. persistent

  925. temptation

  926. is met

  927. with

  928. persistent

  929. resistance

  930. and I

  931. wonder

  932. church

  933. do we

  934. fight

  935. temptation

  936. like this?

  937. Do you

  938. flee

  939. from temptation

  940. like Joseph?

  941. Or do you

  942. follow

  943. after the

  944. desires

  945. of your

  946. flesh

  947. like

  948. Judah?

  949. John

  950. Owen

  951. in his

  952. work

  953. overcoming

  954. sin

  955. and

  956. temptation

  957. which by

  958. the way

  959. if you

  960. have

  961. the time

  962. that is

  963. a worthy

  964. read

  965. overcoming

  966. sin

  967. and

  968. temptation

  969. he says

  970. sin is

  971. always

  972. acting

  973. always

  974. conceiving

  975. always

  976. seducing

  977. always

  978. tempting

  979. don't you

  980. find that

  981. to be

  982. true?

  983. Or

  984. y'all just

  985. more sanctified

  986. than I am

  987. maybe you

  988. are

  989. sin

  990. never

  991. lets

  992. up

  993. it

  994. is

  995. always

  996. acting

  997. and

  998. it's

  999. not

  1000. just

  1001. external

  1002. pressures

  1003. although

  1004. those

  1005. are

  1006. all

  1007. over

  1008. the

  1009. place

  1010. it

  1011. is

  1012. inside

  1013. of

  1014. us

  1015. we

  1016. wrestle

  1017. with

  1018. the

  1019. indwelling

  1020. sin

  1021. of our

  1022. own

  1023. hearts

  1024. and so

  1025. Owen

  1026. goes

  1027. on

  1028. he

  1029. says

  1030. when

  1031. we

  1032. realize

  1033. a

  1034. constant

  1035. enemy

  1036. of

  1037. the

  1038. soul

  1039. abides

  1040. within

  1041. us

  1042. what

  1043. diligence

  1044. and

  1045. watchfulness

  1046. we

  1047. should

  1048. have

  1049. how

  1050. woeful

  1051. is

  1052. the

  1053. sloth

  1054. and

  1055. negligence

  1056. then

  1057. of

  1058. so

  1059. many

  1060. who

  1061. live

  1062. blind

  1063. and

  1064. asleep

  1065. to

  1066. this

  1067. reality

  1068. of

  1069. sin

  1070. there

  1071. is

  1072. an

  1073. exceeding

  1074. efficacy

  1075. and

  1076. power

  1077. in

  1078. the

  1079. indwelling

  1080. sin

  1081. of

  1082. believers

  1083. for

  1084. it

  1085. constantly

  1086. inclines

  1087. itself

  1088. towards

  1089. evil

  1090. we

  1091. need

  1092. to

  1093. be

  1094. awake

  1095. then

  1096. if

  1097. our

  1098. hearts

  1099. would

  1100. know

  1101. the

  1102. ways

  1103. of

  1104. God

  1105. our

  1106. enemy

  1107. is

  1108. not

  1109. only

  1110. upon

  1111. us

  1112. as

  1113. it

  1114. was

  1115. with

  1116. Samson

  1117. but

  1118. it

  1119. is

  1120. also

  1121. within

  1122. us

  1123. church

  1124. we

  1125. have

  1126. to

  1127. constantly

  1128. be on

  1129. guard

  1130. against

  1131. the

  1132. temptations

  1133. of

  1134. the

  1135. enemy

  1136. yes

  1137. and

  1138. also

  1139. the

  1140. weakness

  1141. of

  1142. our

  1143. own

  1144. flesh

  1145. but

  1146. the

  1147. fact

  1148. is

  1149. none

  1150. of us

  1151. are

  1152. strong

  1153. enough

  1154. to

  1155. do

  1156. this

  1157. none

  1158. of us

  1159. are

  1160. strong

  1161. enough

  1162. to

  1163. resist

  1164. the

  1165. temptations

  1166. of

  1167. the

  1168. enemy

  1169. day

  1170. after

  1171. day

  1172. after

  1173. day

  1174. after

  1175. day

  1176. we

  1177. are

  1178. not

  1179. strong

  1180. enough

  1181. to

  1182. fight

  1183. against

  1184. all

  1185. that

  1186. the

  1187. world

  1188. and

  1189. the

  1190. flesh

  1191. and

  1192. the

  1193. devil

  1194. would

  1195. throw

  1196. at

  1197. us

  1198. if

  1199. you

  1200. go

  1201. into

  1202. this

  1203. battle

  1204. in

  1205. your

  1206. own

  1207. strength

  1208. you

  1209. will

  1210. fail

  1211. what

  1212. then

  1213. is

  1214. our

  1215. hope

  1216. again

  1217. it

  1218. is

  1219. not

  1220. try

  1221. harder

  1222. it

  1223. is

  1224. not

  1225. be

  1226. better

  1227. it

  1228. is

  1229. not

  1230. ten

  1231. steps

  1232. to

  1233. a

  1234. better

  1235. you

  1236. it

  1237. is

  1238. the

  1239. grace

  1240. of

  1241. God

  1242. at

  1243. work

  1244. for

  1245. those

  1246. who

  1247. believe

  1248. the

  1249. gospel

  1250. teaches

  1251. us

  1252. that

  1253. our

  1254. God

  1255. gives

  1256. grace

  1257. for

  1258. the

  1259. war

  1260. with

  1261. sin

  1262. this

  1263. is

  1264. what

  1265. the

  1266. gospel

  1267. has

  1268. purchased

  1269. for

  1270. all

  1271. who

  1272. believe

  1273. in

  1274. Christ

  1275. you

  1276. realize

  1277. that

  1278. when

  1279. you

  1280. put

  1281. your

  1282. faith

  1283. in

  1284. Christ

  1285. church

  1286. you

  1287. become

  1288. a

  1289. new

  1290. creation

  1291. and

  1292. a

  1293. new

  1294. creation

  1295. who

  1296. is

  1297. now

  1298. set

  1299. free

  1300. from

  1301. the

  1302. power

  1303. of

  1304. sin

  1305. over

  1306. you

  1307. so

  1308. yes

  1309. temptation

  1310. will

  1311. come

  1312. and

  1313. yes

  1314. indwelling

  1315. sin

  1316. remains

  1317. but

  1318. in

  1319. Christ

  1320. you

  1321. now

  1322. have

  1323. new

  1324. resurrection

  1325. power

  1326. by

  1327. his

  1328. grace

  1329. to

  1330. wage

  1331. war

  1332. against

  1333. sin

  1334. that's

  1335. power

  1336. you've

  1337. never

  1338. had

  1339. before

  1340. that's

  1341. new

  1342. spiritual

  1343. life

  1344. that you've

  1345. never

  1346. had

  1347. before

  1348. you

  1349. were

  1350. dead

  1351. in the

  1352. trespasses

  1353. and sins

  1354. in which

  1355. you once

  1356. walked

  1357. but

  1358. God

  1359. has

  1360. made

  1361. you

  1362. alive

  1363. together

  1364. with

  1365. Christ

  1366. you

  1367. have

  1368. the

  1369. power

  1370. of

  1371. his

  1372. spirit

  1373. in

  1374. you

  1375. it

  1376. is

  1377. God

  1378. who

  1379. works

  1380. in

  1381. you

  1382. to

  1383. will

  1384. and

  1385. to

  1386. work

  1387. for

  1388. his

  1389. good

  1390. pleasure

  1391. so

  1392. now

  1393. in

  1394. Christ

  1395. and

  1396. only

  1397. in

  1398. Christ

  1399. we

  1400. can

  1401. go

  1402. to

  1403. war

  1404. with

  1405. sin

  1406. and

  1407. temptation

  1408. knowing

  1409. that

  1410. our

  1411. God

  1412. by

  1413. his

  1414. grace

  1415. is

  1416. fighting

  1417. for

  1418. us

  1419. first

  1420. first

  1421. Corinthians

  1422. 10

  1423. tells

  1424. us

  1425. no

  1426. temptation

  1427. has

  1428. overtaken

  1429. you

  1430. that

  1431. is

  1432. not

  1433. common

  1434. to

  1435. man

  1436. God

  1437. is

  1438. faithful

  1439. and

  1440. he

  1441. will

  1442. not

  1443. let

  1444. you

  1445. be

  1446. tempted

  1447. beyond

  1448. your

  1449. ability

  1450. but

  1451. with

  1452. the

  1453. temptation

  1454. he

  1455. will

  1456. also

  1457. provide

  1458. the

  1459. way

  1460. of

  1461. escape

  1462. but

  1463. we

  1464. should

  1465. also

  1466. know

  1467. church

  1468. that

  1469. if

  1470. we

  1471. do

  1472. by

  1473. his

  1474. grace

  1475. flee

  1476. from

  1477. temptation

  1478. as

  1479. Joseph

  1480. does

  1481. here

  1482. then

  1483. it

  1484. may

  1485. also

  1486. come

  1487. with

  1488. a

  1489. cost

  1490. look

  1491. there

  1492. to

  1493. verse

  1494. 11

  1495. says

  1496. one

  1497. day

  1498. he

  1499. went

  1500. to

  1501. the

  1502. house

  1503. to

  1504. do

  1505. some

  1506. work

  1507. and

  1508. none

  1509. of

  1510. the

  1511. men

  1512. of

  1513. the

  1514. house

  1515. were

  1516. there

  1517. so

  1518. the

  1519. wife

  1520. catches

  1521. him

  1522. by

  1523. the

  1524. garment

  1525. and

  1526. again

  1527. says

  1528. lie

  1529. with

  1530. me

  1531. but

  1532. he

  1533. flees

  1534. away

  1535. and

  1536. he

  1537. leaves

  1538. his

  1539. garment

  1540. in

  1541. her

  1542. hand

  1543. he

  1544. fled

  1545. out

  1546. of

  1547. the

  1548. house

  1549. and

  1550. so

  1551. what

  1552. does

  1553. she

  1554. do

  1555. she

  1556. fabricates

  1557. this

  1558. lie

  1559. to

  1560. tell

  1561. all

  1562. the

  1563. men

  1564. of

  1565. the

  1566. house

  1567. to

  1568. tell

  1569. her

  1570. husband

  1571. that

  1572. this

  1573. Hebrew

  1574. has

  1575. come

  1576. in

  1577. here

  1578. to

  1579. laugh

  1580. at

  1581. me

  1582. and

  1583. humiliate

  1584. me

  1585. he's

  1586. trying

  1587. to

  1588. seduce

  1589. me

  1590. and

  1591. we

  1592. see

  1593. the

  1594. picture

  1595. here

  1596. this

  1597. is

  1598. all

  1599. a

  1600. lie

  1601. isn't

  1602. it

  1603. she

  1604. has

  1605. completely

  1606. made

  1607. up

  1608. this

  1609. story

  1610. and

  1611. now

  1612. once

  1613. again

  1614. this

  1615. is

  1616. the

  1617. second

  1618. time

  1619. now

  1620. Joseph

  1621. is

  1622. a

  1623. victim

  1624. of

  1625. a

  1626. great

  1627. injustice

  1628. and

  1629. the

  1630. master

  1631. hears

  1632. about

  1633. it

  1634. and

  1635. what

  1636. does

  1637. he

  1638. do

  1639. not

  1640. surprisingly

  1641. he

  1642. takes

  1643. him

  1644. and

  1645. he

  1646. throws

  1647. that

  1648. man

  1649. into

  1650. jail

  1651. Joseph's

  1652. there

  1653. in

  1654. prison

  1655. but

  1656. even

  1657. so

  1658. look

  1659. there

  1660. even

  1661. there

  1662. in

  1663. prison

  1664. it

  1665. says

  1666. the

  1667. Lord

  1668. was

  1669. with

  1670. Joseph

  1671. and

  1672. the

  1673. Lord

  1674. showed

  1675. him

  1676. steadfast

  1677. love

  1678. and

  1679. we're

  1680. right

  1681. back

  1682. to

  1683. where

  1684. we

  1685. started

  1686. aren't

  1687. we

  1688. the

  1689. Lord

  1690. his

  1691. presence

  1692. is

  1693. there

  1694. with

  1695. Joseph

  1696. and

  1697. even

  1698. in

  1699. prison

  1700. now

  1701. he's

  1702. causing

  1703. him

  1704. to

  1705. prosper

  1706. and

  1707. to

  1708. succeed

  1709. why

  1710. because

  1711. the

  1712. Lord

  1713. was

  1714. with

  1715. him

  1716. after

  1717. all

  1718. of

  1719. that

  1720. Joseph's

  1721. location

  1722. has

  1723. changed

  1724. his

  1725. circumstances

  1726. has

  1727. changed

  1728. but

  1729. look

  1730. what

  1731. hasn't

  1732. changed

  1733. the

  1734. Lord

  1735. was

  1736. with

  1737. him

  1738. and

  1739. the

  1740. Lord

  1741. prospered

  1742. him

  1743. four

  1744. times

  1745. in

  1746. this

  1747. chapter

  1748. that

  1749. phrase

  1750. keeps

  1751. coming

  1752. up

  1753. do

  1754. you

  1755. see

  1756. that

  1757. the

  1758. Lord

  1759. was

  1760. with

  1761. him

  1762. the

  1763. Lord

  1764. was

  1765. with

  1766. him

  1767. the

  1768. Lord

  1769. was

  1770. with

  1771. him

  1772. the

  1773. Lord

  1774. was

  1775. with

  1776. him

  1777. and

  1778. for

  1779. Joseph

  1780. the

  1781. Lord's

  1782. presence

  1783. with

  1784. him

  1785. is

  1786. worth

  1787. far

  1788. more

  1789. than

  1790. the

  1791. fleeting

  1792. pleasures

  1793. of

  1794. sin

  1795. and

  1796. I'm

  1797. certain

  1798. that

  1799. it's

  1800. the

  1801. Lord's

  1802. presence

  1803. with

  1804. him

  1805. that's

  1806. strengthened

  1807. him

  1808. to fight

  1809. the

  1810. temptation

  1811. to

  1812. sin

  1813. church

  1814. is

  1815. this

  1816. true

  1817. for

  1818. you

  1819. Christian

  1820. do you

  1821. realize

  1822. that you

  1823. have

  1824. the

  1825. same

  1826. presence

  1827. of

  1828. the

  1829. Lord

  1830. with

  1831. you

  1832. and when

  1833. the

  1834. enemy

  1835. would

  1836. tempt

  1837. you

  1838. to

  1839. sin

  1840. do you

  1841. remember

  1842. the

  1843. Lord

  1844. is

  1845. with

  1846. you

  1847. and when

  1848. you

  1849. suffer the

  1850. consequences

  1851. of living

  1852. faithfully

  1853. for the

  1854. Lord

  1855. and in a

  1856. wicked world

  1857. do you

  1858. remember

  1859. that the

  1860. Lord

  1861. is

  1862. with

  1863. you

  1864. God's

  1865. grace

  1866. is at

  1867. work

  1868. here

  1869. out

  1870. of

  1871. the

  1872. wreckage

  1873. of

  1874. sin

  1875. to

  1876. bring

  1877. about

  1878. the

  1879. great

  1880. hope

  1881. for

  1882. the

  1883. sinful

  1884. world

  1885. and

  1886. church

  1887. this

  1888. is

  1889. truly

  1890. this

  1891. is

  1892. the

  1893. story

  1894. of

  1895. every

  1896. Christian

  1897. in

  1898. the

  1899. room

  1900. and

  1901. every

  1902. Christian

  1903. in

  1904. the

  1905. world

  1906. Jesus

  1907. has

  1908. stepped

  1909. in

  1910. and

  1911. rescued

  1912. you

  1913. out

  1914. of

  1915. your

  1916. mess

  1917. out

  1918. of

  1919. the

  1920. wreckage

  1921. of

  1922. your

  1923. own

  1924. sin

  1925. God's

  1926. grace

  1927. has

  1928. burst

  1929. through

  1930. in

  1931. the

  1932. gospel

  1933. of

  1934. Christ

  1935. he's

  1936. taken

  1937. the

  1938. wrath

  1939. of

  1940. God

  1941. and

  1942. the

  1943. judgment

  1944. of

  1945. God

  1946. that

  1947. we

  1948. deserve

  1949. for

  1950. our

  1951. sin

  1952. he's

  1953. worked

  1954. unfathomable

  1955. grace

  1956. towards

  1957. you

  1958. who

  1959. believe

  1960. but

  1961. he

  1962. doesn't

  1963. stop

  1964. there

  1965. and

  1966. God's

  1967. grace

  1968. also

  1969. sustains

  1970. us

  1971. and

  1972. equips

  1973. us

  1974. for

  1975. the

  1976. battle

  1977. against

  1978. sin

  1979. you

  1980. are

  1981. not

  1982. alone

  1983. in

  1984. the

  1985. battle

  1986. you

  1987. see

  1988. Joseph

  1989. triumph

  1990. over

  1991. temptation

  1992. and

  1993. in

  1994. this

  1995. way

  1996. he

  1997. points

  1998. us

  1999. forwards

  2000. through

  2001. our

  2002. Lord

  2003. Jesus

  2004. Christ

  2005. do you

  2006. see the

  2007. picture of

  2008. Christ

  2009. here in

  2010. this

  2011. passage

  2012. our

  2013. Lord

  2014. Jesus

  2015. like

  2016. Joseph

  2017. in a

  2018. way

  2019. he

  2020. perfectly

  2021. resisted

  2022. sin's

  2023. temptation

  2024. he

  2025. himself

  2026. suffered

  2027. while

  2028. being

  2029. tempted

  2030. like

  2031. us

  2032. he

  2033. was

  2034. tempted

  2035. and

  2036. tried

  2037. in

  2038. every

  2068. puts it

  2069. in

  2070. mere

  2071. Christianity

  2074. only

  2075. those

  2076. who

  2077. try

  2078. to

  2079. resist

  2144. later

  2145. that's

  2146. why

  2205. to

  2206. the

  2208. what

  2209. temptation

  2210. means

  2211. friend

  2212. do you

  2213. know

  2214. the

  2215. depth

  2216. of

  2217. your

  2219. do

  2220. you

  2221. know

  2222. the

  2223. grace

  2224. of

  2225. God

  2226. for

  2227. you

  2228. in

  2250. Lord

  2251. at

  2256. you

  2257. know

  2258. the

  2260. of

  2261. the

  2262. gospel

  2263. of

  2264. God's

  2265. grace

  2266. let's

  2267. pray

  2268. father

  2269. we

  2270. praise

  2271. you

  2272. that

  2273. even

  2274. in

  2275. moments

  2276. when

  2277. it

  2278. seems

  2279. dark

  2280. and

  2281. hopeless

  2282. father

  2283. yet

  2284. there

  2285. is

  2286. hope

  2287. in

  2288. the

  2289. gospel

  2290. of

  2291. Christ

  2292. father

  2293. as we

  2294. look

  2295. at

  2296. our

  2297. fallen

  2298. world

  2299. and

  2300. see

  2301. the

  2302. wickedness

  2303. that

  2304. runs

  2305. rampant

  2306. father

  2307. we

  2308. pray

  2309. that

  2310. we

  2311. would

  2312. bring

  2313. this

  2314. world

  2315. the

  2316. solution

  2317. that

  2318. you

  2319. have

  2320. brought

  2321. the

  2322. world

  2323. it's

  2324. the

  2325. gospel

  2326. of

  2327. Jesus

  2328. and

  2329. God

  2330. as we

  2331. see

  2332. our

  2333. own

  2334. sin

  2335. and

  2336. our

  2337. own

  2338. inclination

  2339. to

  2340. to

  2341. wander

  2342. from

  2343. you

  2344. and

  2345. we

  2346. see

  2347. the

  2348. temptations

  2349. that

  2350. we

  2351. face

  2352. day

  2353. in

  2354. and

  2355. day

  2356. out

  2357. we

  2358. pray

  2359. !

  2360. of

  2361. your

  2362. grace

  2363. at

  2364. work

  2365. in

  2366. us

  2367. we

  2368. pray

  2369. this

  2370. in

  2371. Jesus

  2373. amen
