  1. Well, please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to the book of Genesis, Genesis chapter 45.

    Genesis 45 chapter mention

  2. ! And our passage this morning is chapter 45, verse 16, going all the way through 47, verse 31.

    Isaiah 45:16

  3. And it's our normal practice that we have you stand for the scripture reading before the sermon.

  4. But as we did last week, I'm going to spare you that this week because it's about 80-something verses long.

  5. But we will read the scripture portions during the sermon.

  6. So we'll cover it that way this week.

  7. Would you pray with me once more for the preaching of the word as we prepare to hear it?

  8. Lord, the grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  9. God, we pray, would you bless the preaching of your word?

  10. Would you empower it by your spirit?

  11. Would you ready our hearts to receive it?

  12. May it land on fertile soil in our hearts this morning.

  13. Open our ears to hear the truth.

  14. We pray in Jesus' name.

  15. Amen.

  16. Amen.

  17. I found an interesting website this week.

  18. It's polameter.org.

  19. I've never visited that site before.

  20. And my disclaimer is I make no claims whatsoever as to the factuality of this website.

  21. Okay?

  22. So before the emails come, that's my disclaimer.

  23. I'm just here to tell you what the site aims to do.

  24. Apparently, it is, quote, an independent initiative developed by political scientists that tracks whether or not politicians keep the promises that they make.

  25. This particular website tracks Canadian politics.

  26. But I did a quick search and found several others that track American politics as well.

  27. And so if you have nothing else to do this week, you can do a quick Google search.

  28. And pretty quickly, you can find a Joe Biden promise tracker for his time in office.

  29. You can find a Donald Trump promise tracker for his first term as well as an active one for his ongoing current term.

  30. And it's interesting for me as I looked on these different websites to see all the many promises made.

  31. And to see that across the board, whether they are Democrat or Republican or anywhere in between, whether they are American or Canadian,

  32. for as different as these politicians are, they all shared one thing in common.

  33. You know what it is?

  34. Not a single one of them has perfectly kept all of their promises.

  35. The first guy on the Canadian site, as of the time of my research this week, had been in office for 372 days.

  36. Apparently, he has made about 440 distinct promises that his website is tracking.

  37. 62% of them are not yet rated, meaning in over a year's time, he has not yet done anything on those promises.

  38. 26% are in progress.

  39. That's a good thing.

  40. 6% have been kept.

  41. 3% are partially kept.

  42. And another 3% are broken promises.

  43. I think we would agree that's not all that encouraging, is it?

  44. But the sad truth is, and he's actually, comparatively speaking, he's actually doing pretty good.

  45. I hope that it's not news to you this morning that sometimes people, sometimes politicians,

  46. sometimes you and I, make promises that we wind up not keeping.

  47. And it all makes me very thankful, praise God, that our God is not at all like this.

  48. Now we've seen over and over and over again in the book of Genesis that our God is a promise-making God.

  49. We saw all the way back in the Garden of Eden, Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  50. He promised that there would be a coming seed of the woman who would crush the head of the serpent.

  51. And then we saw in Genesis chapter 12, God makes great promises to Abraham.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  52. He says,

  53. Our God is a promise-making God.

  54. But praise God, not only this, we've also seen our God is a promise-keeping God.

  55. The Christian confidence is that our God ensures that 100% of his promises are either kept or are in progress.

  56. Our God is a promise-keeping God.

  57. You know, it's vital for us as God's people to remember this because, as you know,

  58. life on this side of the Garden of Eden, life in a fallen world, is not easy.

  59. And it's tempting for us in the constant challenges that we face here in a sin-cursed world.

  60. We're tempted often to doubt the faithfulness of God to his promises.

  61. The good news of our passage this morning, we're reminded yet again that no matter the obstacle,

  62. our God keeps his promises.

  63. That's the big idea for us this morning.

  64. Our God is a promise-keeping God.

  65. And so let's take a look at our passage this morning.

  66. And what we'll see is three truths to remember about God's promises.

  67. This is our outline this morning.

  68. If you're a note-taker, that might help you to follow along.

  69. I realize it's a lengthy passage.

  70. We're going to see three truths to remember about God's promises.

  71. The first, first we see God's promises often seem to be threatened.

  72. God's promises often seem to be threatened.

  73. Look there with me starting in chapter 45, verse 15.

  74. Verses 15 through 28 set the stage here for our passage.

  75. It says,

  76. When the report was heard in Pharaoh's house, Joseph's brothers have come, it pleased Pharaoh

  77. and his servants.

  78. And Pharaoh said to Joseph,

  79. Say to your brothers,

  80. Do this, load your beasts and go back to the land of Canaan, and take your father and your

  81. household and come to me, and I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you

  82. shall eat the fat of the land.

  83. And you, Joseph, are commanded to say,

  84. Do this, take wagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives, and

  85. bring your father and come.

  86. Have no concern for your goods, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.

  87. The sons of Israel did so, and Joseph gave them wagons according to the command of Pharaoh,

  88. and gave them provisions for the journey.

  89. To each and all of them he gave a change of clothes, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred

  90. shekels of silver and five changes of clothes.

  91. And to his father he sent as follows, ten donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt, ten female

  92. donkeys loaded with grain, bread, and provision for his father on the journey.

  93. Then he sent his brothers away, and as they departed he said to them, Do not quarrel on

  94. the way.

  95. I love that.

  96. So they went up out of Egypt and came to the land of Canaan to their father Jacob, and

  97. they told him, Joseph is still alive, and he's ruler over all the land of Egypt.

  98. And his heart became numb, for he did not believe them.

  99. But when they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said to them, and when he saw the

  100. wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived.

  101. And Israel said, It is enough.

  102. Joseph, my son, is still alive.

  103. I will go and see him before I die.

  104. On one hand, Israel, Jacob, has just received some of the best news imaginable.

  105. His son, Joseph, who he thought was long gone, who he thought was dead, somehow is still alive.

  106. And more than that, somehow, we know how, this is the providential hand of God, somehow,

  107. Joseph is in a position of authority in Egypt, and he's calling Israel and his family to come

  108. into Egypt in the midst of this famine.

  109. It seems undeniable that this is the hand of the Lord.

  110. If the Lord is paving the way for Israel and his family to come into Egypt, that all seems

  111. like great news, but it also presents a bit of a problem, doesn't it?

  112. It presents a challenge here.

  113. Put yourself in Jacob's shoes.

  114. This whole time, we have been journeying, working our way towards the promised land.

  115. But now, God is calling us out?

  116. Now, what does this mean for the promises of God?

  117. Can God's promises survive in Egypt?

  118. Will we be safe there?

  119. What about this promise of multiplication of offspring?

  120. Will we be able to grow and multiply there?

  121. What about the promise of the land of Canaan?

  122. We're leaving Canaan.

  123. How can God's promises survive in Egypt?

  124. Will God be with us there?

  125. And it seems like, yet again, these are threats to the promises of God.

  126. And we've seen this again already in Genesis, haven't we?

  127. We've seen threats of infertility and barrenness to the promise of a coming seed.

  128. We've seen threats of war and conflict.

  129. We've seen threats of family strife.

  130. We've seen threats of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob's own sinfulness that seem to maybe put

  131. the promises of God at risk.

  132. It seems like, once again, there are threats to God's promises coming true.

  133. Now, I wonder if you ever feel that way.

  134. God has made some pretty incredible promises to us in His Word, hasn't He?

  135. He's promised us that any sinner who comes to faith in Christ will be totally forgiven,

  136. washed clean of their sin.

  137. And yet, how do we feel when we look in the mirror and see the depth of our own sinfulness?

  138. It seems like to us, it feels like to us, that each new sin puts God's promises at risk,

  139. like a threat.

  140. We know God's promised us one day that this whole world will be remade, there will be no

  141. sin, there will be no death, there will be no sickness, there will be no pain.

  142. But when we look around at the world that is all around us, the world that we live in,

  143. and we see the depth of wickedness around us, sometimes it just feels like, God, how in

  144. the world will you really keep your promises?

  145. It seems like there are threats to the promises of God.

  146. Of course, we should know better.

  147. There are no threats to His promises.

  148. God is kind here to remind Jacob and to remind us that no obstacle can stand in the way of

  149. His promises.

  150. Look there to chapter 46.

  151. It says, Israel took his journey and all that he had, and he came to Beersheba.

  152. This is sort of a sacred space here in Genesis where God shows up often, and again, that's

  153. exactly what happens here.

  154. It says, Israel offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac, and God spoke to Israel

  155. in visions of the night and said, Jacob, Jacob.

  156. And he said, here I am.

  157. Then he said, I am God, the God of your father.

  158. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt.

  159. And he gives him four reasons why.

  160. For one, he says, don't be afraid to go down in Egypt because even in Egypt, even there,

  161. I will make you into a great nation.

  162. See, that promise hasn't gone anywhere.

  163. The location is changing.

  164. You're no longer in Canaan.

  165. You're going to be somewhere else.

  166. You're going to be in Egypt.

  167. The location is changing.

  168. But my faithfulness is not changing.

  169. My promises are not changing.

  170. A second reason, God promises his presence in Egypt.

  171. Didn't I promise you I would be with you and I would be your God?

  172. Well, even in Egypt, that promise remains.

  173. He says, I myself will go with you down into Egypt.

  174. I mean, don't you love that?

  175. Because it's often outside of this comfortable place of blessing that we're tempted to doubt God's faithfulness.

  176. But don't you know, Christian, that even there, he is with you.

  177. Even in sickness, he is with you.

  178. Even in trial, he is with you.

  179. He goes down with you into the place of loneliness.

  180. He goes down with you into the place of despair.

  181. Even to the valley of the shadow of death.

  182. The Lord is with you.

  183. God promises his presence with his people, even to the ends of the earth.

  184. Even to Egypt, Jacob.

  185. He says, I will be with you to protect you and to bless you.

  186. But it gets even better.

  187. Third reason here, not to fear.

  188. He says, Jacob, don't be afraid to go into Egypt because I will bring you up again.

  189. I love this.

  190. This journey into Egypt is all part of the sovereign plan of God.

  191. This journey into Egypt is not the end of the story of my people.

  192. I'm not going back on my promise.

  193. I already have plans to bring you up out of Egypt.

  194. He says, you're worried about the beginning of all this when I have the end of it all planned out.

  195. But God has sovereign purpose even in this seemingly dangerous journey.

  196. What is it?

  197. What is it?

  198. We've seen this answer over and over and over again over the past few weeks.

  199. It's all over Joseph's story.

  200. Our God is working all things for his glory and for the good of his people.

  201. All things for his glory and for our good.

  202. And if you want to understand the big broad strokes, the big picture purpose of all things,

  203. even the hardest things, even things that seem to put God's faithfulness to the test,

  204. the big picture purpose of all of it is that in some way,

  205. every single moment of your life, believer,

  206. every single challenge, every single difficulty,

  207. all of it is in some way, it is for his glory.

  208. And all of it in some way is for your good if you are in Christ.

  209. Our sovereign God is bringing Israel into Egypt.

  210. And you keep on reading in the Exodus, we'll see.

  211. Yes, God, our sovereign God will bring them out.

  212. And in so doing, he will get glory over Egypt.

  213. And you, Jacob, you, Israel, will be not just my called people,

  214. you will be my redeemed people.

  215. And you'll get to see my power and my grace and my glory and display

  216. in ways that you couldn't even possibly begin to imagine

  217. if you did not go down into Egypt.

  218. All of this, of course, anticipates the ultimate display of the glory and grace

  219. and redeeming power of God and the cross of Christ.

  220. Don't be afraid to go, Israel.

  221. I have purpose for you there that you cannot even begin to imagine.

  222. I will get glory in Egypt.

  223. Also, fourth reason here.

  224. Fourth reason not to fear.

  225. He says, don't be afraid to go down into Egypt

  226. because I have good things in store for you.

  227. Even there, Joseph's hand shall close your eyes.

  228. If he had even the slightest bit of doubt about the truthfulness of all of this,

  229. could Joseph possibly be alive?

  230. Now that doubt is gone.

  231. God himself says, yes, it's true.

  232. Joseph is there and you will not die before you see him.

  233. And your beloved son himself will lay you to rest.

  234. Church, here in a fallen world, I mean, it's true.

  235. God's promises often seem to be threatened.

  236. Here by famine and here by a call out of Canaan and into Egypt.

  237. But in our lives, by sickness, by financial hardship,

  238. by the constant delay between promise and fulfillment,

  239. by the disruptions of sin in our homes and in our churches,

  240. in our families, in our marriages, in our society.

  241. But we ought to remember that our good God is sovereign

  242. even over what seems to be threats to his promises.

  243. And what these so-called threats often do actually

  244. is provide for us a test of our faith and our obedience to him,

  245. which is what we see in our second point this morning.

  246. Second, our faith in God's promises will be tested.

  247. And the second truth that we ought to know about God's promises

  248. is that for all of God's people,

  249. our faith in his promises will often be tested.

  250. And God's people must respond to his promises

  251. in the obedience of faith.

  252. Jacob hears all of this and now the question is,

  253. well, how is he going to respond?

  254. What's he going to do?

  255. And what we see in verses 5 through 27

  256. is that Israel goes all in in faith.

  257. Look there at chapter 46, verse 5.

  258. It says,

  259. Then Jacob set out from Beersheba,

  260. and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father,

  261. their little ones, their wives,

  262. and the wagons that Pharaoh had sent to carry him.

  263. They also took their livestock and their goods,

  264. which they had gained in the land of Canaan,

  265. and came into Egypt.

  266. Jacob and all his offspring with him,

  267. his sons and his sons' sons with him,

  268. his daughters and his sons' daughters,

  269. all his offspring he brought with him into Egypt.

  270. And if you look at the rest of chapter 46,

  271. I will spare you here, okay?

  272. I will not read every name.

  273. But the rest of chapter 46, if you pay attention,

  274. it gives us the names of the descendants of Israel

  275. who came into Egypt.

  276. And if you do pay attention in your own Bible reading,

  277. if you don't just breeze by these names

  278. like we're often tempted to do,

  279. you'll notice that there's an emphasis here in this list

  280. on the number seven.

  281. And I don't want to make too much about that,

  282. because sometimes people will take it a little bit too far

  283. with the numbers,

  284. and it's almost like you need a decoder ring

  285. to understand the Bible,

  286. like there's some secret code.

  287. That's not true.

  288. There's no hidden secret code here.

  289. But Moses, in organizing this,

  290. intentionally draws our attention to the number seven.

  291. It's arranged in this way intentionally,

  292. because as you know,

  293. the number seven is a significant biblical number,

  294. and often it carries with it the idea of completion

  295. and fullness.

  296. You think of the seven days of creation.

  297. That's a complete week.

  298. The work is done.

  299. It's full.

  300. It's perfect.

  301. Well, look at this.

  302. Verse 27 says,

  303. all the persons of the house of Jacob

  304. who came into Egypt were,

  305. how many?

  306. Seventy.

  307. Which, math people, is seven times ten.

  308. Rachel's children are fourteen,

  309. which is twice as much as Bilhah's seven.

  310. Leah's offspring are thirty-three,

  311. which is twice as much as Zilpah's sixteen,

  312. which has nothing to do with seven,

  313. unless you add them together,

  314. and then you get forty-nine,

  315. which my math people can tell me is seven times seven.

  316. It just keeps going and going and going.

  317. And the point is,

  318. I think the point that Moses is trying to make for us

  319. is that the full, complete, total,

  320. perfect number of Israel is going.

  321. He does not leave a single thing back in Canaan.

  322. Jacob is all in.

  323. Church, this is what full obedience looks like.

  324. This is the obedience of faith.

  325. You've probably heard the legend before of Cortez

  326. coming into Mexico with his crew.

  327. And they come, they arrive in unknown territory.

  328. They didn't know what to expect.

  329. They knew that it would be dangerous.

  330. And so the temptation would be, in theory,

  331. to just turn back and hop back on the boats

  332. and to sail back to Cuba if things got difficult.

  333. But what did Cortez do?

  334. He orders his men to burn the boats.

  335. Set them ablaze.

  336. Why?

  337. So that there would be no turning back.

  338. We are all in.

  339. There's no escape hatch here.

  340. But that's exactly what Jacob does.

  341. This isn't an easy call for Jacob.

  342. Again, he's moving out of the promised land into Egypt.

  343. But God has called him to do it.

  344. And what does he do?

  345. He goes all in.

  346. He brings all his offspring,

  347. all his livestock,

  348. all his possessions.

  349. He doesn't hedge his bet.

  350. God has called him to go.

  351. And he goes all in in faith.

  352. This is what the obedience of faith looks like.

  353. If you've trusted in the promises of God,

  354. it's like what we sing in the old hymn.

  355. I have decided to follow Jesus.

  356. No turning back.

  357. No turning back.

  358. Though none go with me,

  359. still I will follow.

  360. No turning back.

  361. The cross before me,

  362. the world behind me,

  363. no turning back.

  364. I'm afraid that

  365. many professing Christians,

  366. maybe some of you in the room this morning,

  367. are hedging your bets.

  368. And they want to claim to believe in God's promises

  369. and maybe in some small way they do,

  370. but something in them is holding them back.

  371. You haven't yet burnt the ships.

  372. They aren't yet all in.

  373. And so when that faith,

  374. if it's genuine faith at all,

  375. when that faith is tested

  376. and when push comes to shove

  377. and when things get difficult,

  378. what happens?

  379. They turn right back to their old ways

  380. and they turn right back

  381. to the pleasures of this world.

  382. They turn right back to emptiness

  383. and they retreat.

  384. Christ,

  385. Jesus says,

  386. you must be all in.

  387. If anyone would come after me,

  388. he says,

  389. let him deny himself,

  390. take up his cross

  391. and follow me.

  392. He says,

  393. whoever loves father or mother more than me

  394. is not worthy of me.

  395. Whoever loves son or daughter more than me

  396. is not worthy of me.

  397. Whoever does not take his cross

  398. and follow me

  399. is not worthy of me.

  400. Whoever finds his life will lose it.

  401. Whoever loses his life for my sake

  402. will find it.

  403. I have a good friend

  404. who just had a send-off celebration yesterday.

  405. I wanted to go,

  406. but I couldn't make it down there.

  407. And he and his wife

  408. and his two young kids

  409. are preparing to move their family

  410. to Azerbaijan.

  411. That's why we've prayed for Azerbaijan

  412. the past two Sundays.

  413. Why in the world would they do that?

  414. Why move your young family

  415. from the safety of Augusta

  416. to go to Azerbaijan?

  417. Why?

  418. Simply put,

  419. they are all in.

  420. They believe God has called them there

  421. and that whether in Augusta

  422. or Azerbaijan,

  423. their God will be with them

  424. and their God will fulfill his purposes

  425. in them and through them.

  426. Christian,

  427. you may be called to Azerbaijan.

  428. That's a possibility.

  429. You may be called to go.

  430. But more likely,

  431. you are all called to be all in

  432. right here where you are.

  433. Are you all in?

  434. Or are you holding something back?

  435. God's promises will seem to be threatened.

  436. Our faith in his promises

  437. will be tested.

  438. But third,

  439. and finally,

  440. third,

  441. we see the good news

  442. that our God

  443. always keeps his promises.

  444. Our God

  445. always keeps

  446. his promises.

  447. We see this here

  448. in the rest of our passage.

  449. And starting in

  450. verse 28,

  451. we get to see

  452. God's faithfulness

  453. to three specific promises.

  454. And we read them

  455. at the beginning here

  456. all the way back

  457. to the promises

  458. he made to Abraham.

  459. For one,

  460. we see

  461. God blesses

  462. his people

  463. even in Egypt.

  464. Didn't God promise

  465. I will bless you?

  466. I will bless you.

  467. Well,

  468. how is that going to happen

  469. in Egypt?

  470. Look there,

  471. starting in verse 28,

  472. chapter 46.

  473. It says,

  474. He had sent Judah

  475. ahead of him

  476. to Joseph

  477. to show the way

  478. before him in Goshen.

  479. And they came

  480. into the land of Goshen.

  481. And then Joseph

  482. prepared his chariot

  483. and went up

  484. to meet Israel,

  485. his father,

  486. in Goshen.

  487. He presented himself

  488. to him

  489. and fell on his neck

  490. and wept on his neck

  491. a good while.

  492. Israel said to Joseph,

  493. Now let me die

  494. since I have seen

  495. your face

  496. and know

  497. that you're still alive.

  498. And Joseph said

  499. to his brothers

  500. and to his father's household,

  501. I will go up

  502. and tell Pharaoh

  503. and will say to him,

  504. My brothers

  505. and my father's household

  506. who were in the land

  507. of Canaan

  508. have come to me

  509. and the men are shepherds

  510. for they have been

  511. keepers of livestock

  512. and they have brought

  513. their flocks

  514. and their herds

  515. and all that they have.

  516. When Pharaoh calls you

  517. and says,

  518. What is your occupation?

  519. You shall say,

  520. Your servants

  521. have been keepers

  522. of livestock

  523. from our youth

  524. even until now

  525. both we

  526. and our fathers

  527. in order that you

  528. may dwell

  529. in the land of Goshen

  530. for every shepherd

  531. is an abomination

  532. to the Egyptians.

  533. So Joseph went in

  534. and told Pharaoh,

  535. My father

  536. and my brothers

  537. with their flocks

  538. and herds

  539. and all that they possess

  540. have come

  541. from the land of Canaan.

  542. They are now

  543. in the land of Goshen

  544. and from among his brothers

  545. he took five men

  546. and presented them

  547. to Pharaoh.

  548. Pharaoh said

  549. to his brothers,

  550. What is your occupation?

  551. And they said to Pharaoh,

  552. Your servants are shepherds

  553. as our fathers were.

  554. They said to Pharaoh,

  555. We have come to sojourn

  556. in the land

  557. for there is no pasture

  558. for your servants' flocks

  559. for the famine is severe

  560. in the land of Canaan.

  561. And now please let your servants

  562. dwell in the land of Goshen.

  563. Then Pharaoh said to Joseph,

  564. Your father and your brothers

  565. have come to you.

  566. The land of Egypt

  567. is before you.

  568. Settle your father

  569. and your brothers

  570. in the best of the land.

  571. Let them settle

  572. in the land of Goshen.

  573. And if you know

  574. any able men among them,

  575. and put them in charge

  576. of my livestock.

  577. Why in the world

  578. does Pharaoh respond this way?

  579. Haven't we just seen

  580. shepherds are an abomination

  581. to the Egyptians?

  582. He doesn't know them.

  583. He doesn't owe them anything.

  584. Here's the most powerful man

  585. in the world.

  586. He holds all the cards.

  587. He doesn't have to give them anything.

  588. And yet,

  589. here he is being incredibly generous

  590. to God's people.

  591. Why?

  592. It can only be explained

  593. by the providential work

  594. of the Lord.

  595. The Lord is continuing

  596. to bless his people

  597. even here in Egypt.

  598. He gives them the land of Goshen

  599. up by the Nile.

  600. That's good land.

  601. He says it's the very best.

  602. On top of that,

  603. he gives them jobs.

  604. He puts them in charge

  605. of his livestock.

  606. How do we explain this?

  607. God is fulfilling

  608. his promises.

  609. God is blessing his people

  610. even during a time of famine.

  611. He provides them with food.

  612. He gives them shelter.

  613. He arranges far in advance

  614. how they're going to be cared for.

  615. He sends Joseph ahead of them

  616. to preserve a remnant for them.

  617. Joseph's hard work

  618. during that time,

  619. it earns Pharaoh's favor,

  620. which then spills over

  621. in blessing and favor

  622. towards his people.

  623. All of this,

  624. all of this is God

  625. fulfilling his promise.

  626. He's ensuring

  627. his promises are kept.

  628. And not only this,

  629. we see a second promise kept

  630. starting in verse 7,

  631. chapter 47, verse 7.

  632. God promised that

  633. God's people would also

  634. be a blessing to the nations.

  635. Not only would God bless them,

  636. but through them,

  637. the nations would be blessed.

  638. And again, the question is,

  639. how in the world

  640. is God going to do this

  641. even in Egypt?

  642. Look there to verse 7.

  643. It says,

  644. Then Joseph brought in

  645. Jacob his father

  646. and stood him before Pharaoh.

  647. And Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

  648. And Pharaoh said to Jacob,

  649. How many are the days

  650. of the years of your life?

  651. And Jacob said to Pharaoh,

  652. The days of the years

  653. of my sojourning

  654. are 130 years.

  655. Few and evil have been

  656. the days of the years

  657. of my life.

  658. And they have not attained

  659. to the days of the years

  660. of the life of my fathers

  661. and the days of their sojourning.

  662. And Jacob blessed Pharaoh

  663. and went out

  664. from the presence of Pharaoh.

  665. And then Joseph settled

  666. his father and his brothers

  667. and gave them a possession

  668. in the land of Egypt,

  669. in the best of the land,

  670. in the land of Ramses,

  671. as Pharaoh had commanded.

  672. And Joseph provided

  673. his father, his brothers,

  674. and all his father's household

  675. with food according

  676. to the number

  677. of their dependents.

  678. Jacob blesses Pharaoh.

  679. This Hebrew abomination,

  680. this shepherd,

  681. comes and extends

  682. a blessing, again,

  683. to the most powerful man

  684. in the world.

  685. It's a picture

  686. of the blessing

  687. that God promised

  688. through his people

  689. to the nations.

  690. Keep reading.

  691. We see that promise

  692. kept even more clearly

  693. with the wisdom

  694. that God gives Joseph.

  695. Verse 13.

  696. It says,

  697. Now there is no food

  698. in all the land,

  699. for the famine

  700. was very severe,

  701. so that the land of Egypt

  702. and the land of Canaan

  703. languished by reason

  704. of the famine.

  705. And Joseph gathered up

  706. all the money

  707. that was found

  708. in the land of Egypt

  709. and in the land of Canaan

  710. in exchange for the grain

  711. that they bought.

  712. And Joseph brought the money

  713. into Pharaoh's house,

  714. and when the money

  715. was all spent

  716. in the land of Egypt

  717. and in the land of Canaan,

  718. all the Egyptians

  719. came to Joseph

  720. and said,

  721. Give us food.

  722. Why should we die

  723. before your eyes?

  724. For our money is gone.

  725. And Joseph answered,

  726. Give your livestock

  727. and I will give you food

  728. in exchange for your livestock

  729. if your money is gone.

  730. So they brought

  731. their livestock to Joseph.

  732. And Joseph gave them food

  733. in exchange for the horses

  734. and the flocks,

  735. the herds,

  736. and the donkeys.

  737. He supplied them with food

  738. in exchange for all

  739. their livestock that year.

  740. And when that year was ended,

  741. they came to him

  742. the following year

  743. and said to him,

  744. We will not hide

  745. from my Lord

  746. that our money

  747. is all spent

  748. and the herds

  749. of livestock

  750. are my Lord's.

  751. There is nothing left

  752. in the sight of my Lord

  753. but our bodies

  754. and our land.

  755. Why should we die

  756. before your eyes,

  757. both we and our land?

  758. Buy us

  759. and our land for food

  760. and we with our land

  761. will be servants

  762. to Pharaoh

  763. and give us seed

  764. that we may live

  765. and not die

  766. and that the land

  767. may not be desolate.

  768. So Joseph

  769. bought all the land

  770. of Egypt

  771. for Pharaoh

  772. for all the Egyptians

  773. sold their fields

  774. because the famine

  775. was severe on them.

  776. The land became Pharaoh's.

  777. As for the people,

  778. he made servants of them

  779. from one end of Egypt

  780. to the other.

  781. Only the land

  782. of the priests

  783. he did not buy

  784. for the priests

  785. had a fixed allowance

  786. from Pharaoh

  787. and lived on the allowance

  788. that Pharaoh gave them.

  789. Therefore,

  790. they did not sell

  791. their land.

  792. Then Joseph said

  793. to the people,

  794. Behold,

  795. I have this day

  796. bought you

  797. and your land

  798. for Pharaoh.

  799. Now here is seed

  800. for you

  801. and you shall sow

  802. the land

  803. and of the harvest

  804. you shall give

  805. a fifth to Pharaoh

  806. and four fifths

  807. shall be your own

  808. as seed for the field

  809. and as food

  810. for yourselves

  811. and your households

  812. and as food

  813. for your little ones.

  814. And they said,

  815. You have saved

  816. our lives.

  817. May it please the Lord.

  818. We will be servants

  819. to Pharaoh.

  820. So Joseph made it

  821. a statute

  822. concerning the land

  823. of Egypt

  824. and it stands

  825. to this day

  826. that Pharaoh

  827. should have the fifth

  828. and the land

  829. of the priests alone

  830. did not become

  831. Pharaoh's.

  832. You see the wisdom

  833. that God's given

  834. Joseph here.

  835. It's an incredibly

  836. shrewd move,

  837. isn't it?

  838. My boys and I

  839. like to play a game

  840. called Settlers of Catan.

  841. Amanda doesn't really

  842. like to play with us

  843. and I'll let you in

  844. on a secret.

  845. The key to winning

  846. that game

  847. is kind of like Monopoly.

  848. The key to winning

  849. that game

  850. is understanding

  851. supply and demand.

  852. You have to have

  853. certain resources

  854. in order to build

  855. and if you don't

  856. have access to wheat,

  857. you can't build

  858. a settlement.

  859. That's just how

  860. the game goes.

  861. And so if you want

  862. to be really strategic

  863. or some would say

  864. really mean,

  865. what you do

  866. is you hoard

  867. all the resources

  868. that other people need.

  869. And I'm telling you now,

  870. they may not like it

  871. and they may never

  872. play with you again,

  873. but eventually

  874. if they want to build,

  875. they will need to come

  876. to you to get

  877. what they need.

  878. And that's exactly

  879. what Joseph does here.

  880. And Joseph,

  881. first he stores up

  882. all the wheat

  883. and then he sells

  884. the wheat.

  885. He gathers up

  886. all the money

  887. when the people

  888. have no money.

  889. Then they come to him,

  890. they offer their livestock

  891. for the food.

  892. Then they have no livestock

  893. so they come

  894. and offer themselves.

  895. They offer their land.

  896. And so in this

  897. one shrewd maneuver,

  898. Joseph has successfully

  899. settled the land of Catan.

  900. All the land of Egypt

  901. was now Pharaoh's.

  902. All the people

  903. are now his servants

  904. with the exception

  905. of the priests.

  906. It is a brilliant,

  907. wise plan.

  908. But do you see

  909. in the same way,

  910. in that same maneuver,

  911. he is blessing

  912. the nations

  913. by the wisdom

  914. God has given him.

  915. He has provided food

  916. for the nations.

  917. That's a blessing.

  918. He's provided

  919. a cash cow

  920. and pep

  921. and forever.

  922. for Pharaoh,

  923. for Egypt.

  924. Perpetuity

  925. is the word

  926. I was looking for.

  927. God is blessing

  928. the nations

  929. through the wisdom

  930. of Joseph.

  931. God's promise

  932. of blessing

  933. to his people

  934. is kept in Egypt.

  935. God's promise

  936. of blessing

  937. through his people

  938. is kept in Egypt.

  939. But what about

  940. God's promise

  941. of multiplication?

  942. One final promise

  943. kept here.

  944. And we see

  945. this promise

  946. of multiplication

  947. kept starting

  948. in verse 27.

  949. It says,

  950. Thus Israel

  951. settled in the land

  952. of Egypt,

  953. in the land

  954. of Goshen,

  955. and they gained

  956. possessions in it

  957. and were fruitful

  958. and multiplied

  959. greatly.

  960. That's Eden language.

  961. And Jacob lived

  962. in the land

  963. of Egypt

  964. 17 years.

  965. So the days

  966. of Jacob,

  967. the years

  968. of his life,

  969. were 147 years.

  970. And when the time

  971. drew near

  972. that Israel

  973. must die,

  974. he called his son

  975. Joseph and said

  976. to him,

  977. If now I have

  978. found favor

  979. in your sight,

  980. put your hand

  981. under my thigh

  982. and promise

  983. to deal kindly

  984. and truly with me.

  985. Do not bury me

  986. in Egypt,

  987. but let me lie

  988. with my fathers.

  989. Carry me out

  990. of the land

  991. of Egypt

  992. and bury me

  993. in their burying place.

  994. And he answered,

  995. I will do

  996. as you have said.

  997. And he said,

  998. Swear to me.

  999. And he swore to him.

  1000. Then Israel

  1001. bowed himself

  1002. upon the head

  1003. of his bed.

  1004. God keeps

  1005. his promise

  1006. of multiplication

  1007. even there

  1008. in Egypt.

  1009. Hasn't he promised?

  1010. Your descendants

  1011. will be more numerous

  1012. than the stars

  1013. in the sky

  1014. or the sand

  1015. on the shore.

  1016. That promise

  1017. is not dependent

  1018. on location.

  1019. Even in Egypt,

  1020. God's people

  1021. are fruitful

  1022. and they multiply.

  1023. If you keep

  1024. on reading

  1025. in Exodus,

  1026. and we see

  1027. that promise

  1028. is not dependent

  1029. on leadership.

  1030. Joseph dies

  1031. and yet,

  1032. what do we see?

  1033. The people

  1034. continue to multiply.

  1035. You keep on reading

  1036. and you see

  1037. it's not dependent

  1038. on ease

  1039. or safety

  1040. of their circumstances.

  1041. A new pharaoh

  1042. rises up

  1043. and he seeks

  1044. to destroy

  1045. the people of God

  1046. and what happens?

  1047. They continue

  1048. to multiply.

  1049. This is just

  1050. how it goes.

  1051. I mean,

  1052. try as hard

  1053. as they want.

  1054. The powers

  1055. of darkness

  1056. cannot stop

  1057. the people

  1058. of God

  1059. from multiplying

  1060. on the face

  1061. of the earth.

  1062. Stone Stephen

  1063. to death,

  1064. Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  1065. And they say,

  1066. well,

  1067. maybe this will stop

  1068. this whole preaching

  1069. Christianity thing,

  1070. right?

  1071. Maybe they'll just

  1072. stop talking about Jesus

1073. if we kill one of them.

  1074. What happens?

  1075. As they're scattered,

  1076. they go about

  1077. preaching the word.

  1078. You cannot stop

  1079. the multiplication

  1080. of God's people.

  1081. Jesus has promised,

1082. I will build my church

1083. and the gates of hell

1084. will not prevail against it.

  1085. You cannot stop

  1086. the multiplication

  1087. of God's people.

  1088. Why?

1089. Because God has promised it

  1090. and God is faithful

  1091. to all His promises.

  1092. The kingdom of God

  1093. will continue to grow

  1094. like a grain

  1095. of mustard seed

  1096. that grows

1097. to be the greatest tree

  1098. in all the earth

1099. or like a little bit

  1100. of leaven

  1101. that worked

  1102. into the dough

  1103. leavens the whole lump.

  1104. God's kingdom

  1105. through God's people,

  1106. the church,

  1107. will continue

  1108. to multiply

  1109. even in Egypt,

  1110. even in exile,

  1111. even here

  1112. outside of Eden.

  1113. Why?

  1114. Because God

  1115. has promised us

  1116. this in His word.

  1117. And our God

  1118. keeps all

  1119. His promises.

  1120. Church,

  1121. Jacob saw

  1122. the faithfulness

  1123. of God

  1124. firsthand

  1125. and as he comes

  1126. to the end

  1127. of his life,

  1128. what a powerful reminder

  1129. this would have been

  1130. for him

  1131. of the faithfulness

  1132. of his promise

  1133. keeping God.

  1134. But church,

  1135. I hope you realize

  1136. we have

  1137. an even greater display

  1138. of the faithfulness

  1139. of God

  1140. than this.

  1141. ultimately,

  1142. all the promises

  1143. of God

  1144. are kept

  1145. for us

  1146. in Christ.

  1147. Where do we look

  1148. to know for certain

  1149. that our God

  1150. will keep His promises?

  1151. Where do we look

  1152. when His promises

  1153. seem to be threatened

  1154. by the challenges

  1155. of life?

  1156. We look

  1157. to His faithfulness

  1158. in Christ Jesus.

  1159. Hasn't He showed us

1160. at the cross of Christ?

  1161. that even

  1162. in what seems

  1163. to be the darkest

  1164. and most impossible

  1165. moment,

1166. that He is at work

  1167. for His glory

  1168. and our good?

  1169. It is

  1170. to Christ

  1171. to whom

  1172. we must come

  1173. in faith

  1174. burning all

  1175. the ships

  1176. behind us,

  1177. going in full

  1178. faith,

  1179. trusting that He

  1180. is worthy

  1181. of our full

  1182. obedience.

  1183. It is Christ

  1184. Jesus

  1185. who is

  1186. the promised

  1187. blessing

  1188. to the people

  1189. of God

  1190. and through

  1191. the people

  1192. of God

  1193. to the world.

  1194. It is Christ

  1195. Jesus

  1196. who is the true

  1197. and better

  1198. Joseph

  1199. who was betrayed

  1200. and left for dead

  1201. yet in God's

  1202. sovereign purpose

  1203. is now the risen

  1204. and exalted

  1205. ruler of the nations

  1206. who is alone

  1207. the wise

  1208. King of Kings

  1209. to whom

  1210. all nations

  1211. will come

  1212. and bow the knee

  1213. and the one

  1214. to whom

  1215. we must come

  1216. with an empty

  1217. open hand

  1218. if we are

  1219. to live.

  1220. And it is

  1221. the very body

  1222. of Christ

  1223. that continues

  1224. to grow

  1225. and multiply

  1226. as the word

  1227. of Christ

  1228. the gospel

  1229. is proclaimed

  1230. in every corner

  1231. of the earth.

  1232. Church

  1233. we look

  1234. to the gospel

  1235. of Christ

  1236. and see

  1237. the faithfulness

  1238. of our God

  1239. on full display.

  1240. Sometime

  1241. soon

  1242. you may already

  1243. be there now

  1244. God's promises

  1245. will seem

  1246. to be threatened

  1247. in your life.

  1248. Your faith

  1249. in his promises

  1250. will be tested.

  1251. Church

  1252. would you look

  1253. to Christ

  1254. and remember

  1255. our God

  1256. is a promise

  1257. keeping God.

  1258. He will

  1259. accomplish

  1260. all

  1261. that he's promised.

  1262. Amen.

  1263. Let's pray.

  1264. Father

  1265. we thank you

  1266. for that good news

  1267. that you are

  1268. a faithful God

  1269. and we confess

  1270. that we're often

  1271. tempted

  1272. to disbelieve

  1273. that because

  1274. of the trials

  1275. that we face

  1276. and because

  1277. of the

  1278. difficulty

  1279. of life

  1280. here outside

  1281. of Eden

  1282. but God

  1283. we look

  1284. to the cross

  1285. and we're

  1286. reminded

  1287. that you

  1288. are a good

  1289. sovereign

  1290. holy

  1291. faithful God

  1292. who loves

  1293. sinners like us

  1294. and will

  1295. accomplish

  1296. all that you've

  1297. purposed in us.

  1298. We praise you

  1299. for this

  1300. in Jesus name.

  1301. Amen.

  1302. Thank you.
