  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning to the book of Psalms.

  2. The book of Psalms in our chapter this morning is Psalm chapter 32.

    Psalms 32 chapter mention

  3. ! We're continuing our series this summer through the book of Psalms.

  4. We've done that in the past, this is year four, right?

  5. So ten at a time, and we're working our way through the thirties this summer.

  6. So we've come to chapter 32.

  7. And when you've found that, if you would please,

  8. let's stand in honor of the reading of God's Word this morning.

  9. Psalm chapter 32.

    Psalms 32 chapter mention

  10. David writes,

  11. Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

  12. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,

  13. and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

  14. For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.

  15. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me.

  16. My strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.

  17. I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity.

  18. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.

  19. And you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

  20. Therefore, let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found.

  21. Surely in the rush of great waters they shall not reach him.

  22. You are a hiding place for me.

  23. You preserve me from trouble.

  24. You surround me with shouts of deliverance.

  25. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.

  26. I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

  27. Be not like a horse or a mule without understanding,

  28. which must be curbed with bit and bridle,

  29. or it will not stay near you.

  30. Many are the sorrows of the wicked,

  31. but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord.

  32. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous,

  33. and shout for joy, O you upright in heart.

  34. Grass withers and the flower fades,

  35. but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  36. Would you bow and pray with me once more?

  37. Father, we pray, God, would you empower the preaching of your word

  38. by the power of your spirit for the good of your people.

  39. Lord, would we grasp the depth and the glory of this great blessing

  40. of having our sins forgiven.

  41. Would we rejoice in what you've done for us in Christ this morning.

  42. We pray in Jesus' name.

  43. Amen.

  44. You may be seated.

  45. There is a Viking legend of a man named Orm Sterolfsen that I read recently.

  46. Orm made Viking history in Norway about a thousand years ago

  47. when he and the Earl and several other Vikings went to cut down a large tree

  48. in order to create the giant ship mast of the Viking ship.

  49. If you can imagine a Viking ship in your mind,

  50. you probably recognize that long protruding ship mast coming off the front of the ship.

  51. That's called the Ormren Lange, which translated means the long serpent.

  52. And it is a giant tree whittled down.

  53. Apparently this tree was 32 feet long.

  54. It weighed 1,433 pounds.

  55. And so naturally the Earl wanted to see,

  56. well, how many Viking men does it take to pick up this tree?

  57. And he had 60 go.

  58. And together they lifted it up and they put it on their shoulders.

  59. But then two by two, they filtered off the edges

  60. until only Orm was left right there in the middle,

  61. bearing the entire weight all by himself.

  62. And you can imagine how heavy that must have felt.

  63. 1,433 pounds on his shoulders.

  64. It says that Orm was able to hold it for a minute,

  65. which is impressive enough.

  66. But then he decided that he was going to try and take some steps forward

  67. and walk bearing this heavy burden on his back.

  68. And so the legend says that Orm took three steps forward

  69. holding this giant beam on his back

  70. until finally after step number three,

  71. the weight became too much.

  72. And Orm broke his back under the burden

  73. and was never the same again.

  74. Would it surprise you if I told you this morning

  75. that I have carried a heavier weight than that?

  76. And that I've carried it for much longer than three steps,

  77. four steps, five steps,

  78. that in fact I have carried that weight for years of my life

  79. going through trying to put one step in front of the next

  80. and live my life carrying this burden on my back?

  81. Would it surprise you if I told you that

  82. probably some of you in this room this morning

  83. are carrying this heavy burden right now?

  84. You brought it into here with you this morning.

  85. And of course the weight that I'm talking about,

  86. the weight that Psalm chapter 32 is talking about this morning,

    Psalms 32 chapter mention

  87. is the crushing heavy burden of our sin.

  88. King David in our passage this morning,

  89. he admits that even he has carried this heavy burden

  90. on his back before.

  91. And he tried to live with it.

  92. He tried to put one step in front of the next.

  93. He tried to keep walking forward

  94. until by God's grace,

  95. he realized that he's not strong enough

  96. to bear this burden.

  97. None of us are.

  98. And so by God's grace,

  99. he called out to the Lord

  100. and experienced the blessing

  101. of having that weight removed.

  102. This is the main message of Psalm chapter 32 this morning.

    Psalms 32 chapter mention

  103. It's this,

  104. the greatest blessing in the world

  105. is the forgiveness of sins.

  106. The greatest blessing in the world

  107. is the removal off of our back

  108. of the great burden,

  109. the great weight of our sin.

  110. It's the transfer of that guilt

  111. onto someone somewhere else.

  112. And the good news of the gospel

  113. is that this blessing is available

  114. for any sinner,

  115. for each and every one of us

  116. in Jesus Christ.

  117. So let's take a look at Psalm 32

  118. together this morning.

  119. And as we do,

  120. we'll consider three parts this morning.

  121. We're going to consider

  122. the greatest blessing in the world

  123. in three parts.

  124. This will be our outline

  125. if you're taking notes.

  126. It'll help you follow along.

  127. First,

  128. we see true blessing explained.

  129. True blessing explained.

  130. Here in verses 1 and 2,

  131. we get to see David's explanation

  132. of true blessing.

  133. Look there with me,

  134. verses 1 and 2.

  135. And the first thing

  136. that we should notice here

  137. is the good news

  138. that David believes

  139. real,

  140. genuine,

  141. lasting blessing

  142. is possible.

  143. Real,

  144. genuine,

  145. lasting blessing

  146. is actually out there

  147. for us to be,

  148. to be,

  149. for it to be experienced,

  150. for it to be known,

  151. for it to be received.

  152. And we need to be reminded of this

  153. because it doesn't always feel that way,

  154. does it?

  155. And we live in a world

  156. where,

  157. to put it simply,

  158. right,

  159. bad things happen,

  160. right?

  161. And we live in a world

  162. where the world is not

  163. as it should be.

  164. You go out to enjoy the sun

  165. and guess what?

  166. It burns you.

  167. And you go to sit out

  168. on your front porch at night

  169. and guess what?

  170. The no-see-ums come

  171. and they bite you.

  172. But it's often more serious

  173. than that,

  174. right?

  175. We live in a world

  176. where sometimes

  177. we struggle financially,

  178. sometimes we struggle mentally,

  179. sometimes we struggle emotionally.

  180. We live in a world

  181. where sickness is a thing

  182. and loved ones get sick.

  183. Sometimes we live in a world

  184. where we experience

  185. the grief and the loss

  186. of loved ones.

  187. And if we're not careful

  188. as we look around

  189. at all the hard things,

  190. all the hardship

  191. in the world that we live in,

  192. we can easily let ourselves think

  193. that real blessing

  194. is not really possible.

  195. That's just a pipe dream

  196. that those religious people

  197. talk about, right?

  198. It's not real.

  199. David here says,

  200. yes, it is.

  201. It is real.

  202. In fact, he starts this psalm

  203. with the word blessed.

  204. And that word,

  205. it can also be translated happy.

  206. It's the first time

  207. since Psalm 1

  208. that that word

  209. has appeared in the Psalter.

  210. It's been 31 other psalms

  211. until we finally return

  212. to this idea of blessing.

  213. And you'll notice

  214. as we keep going,

  215. that term,

  216. that idea,

  217. keeps coming up again

  218. and again

  219. and again

  220. and again.

  221. And here he repeats it twice.

  222. He's doubling down here.

  223. Blessed, happy

  224. is the one

  225. whose transgression

  226. is forgiven,

  227. whose sin is covered.

  228. Blessed is the man

  229. against whom the Lord

  230. counts no iniquity.

  231. He says,

  232. that is where true blessing

  233. can be found.

  234. But that blessing,

  235. here's the bad news.

  236. It requires that we grasp

  237. the depth of our sin.

  238. Before we can get

  239. to the good news

  240. and really understand

  241. what this blessing is,

  242. we have to first grasp

  243. the bad news.

  244. I want you to look

  245. at how David describes

  246. our sin

  247. here in the first two verses.

  248. David uses three terms here

  249. to give us a full picture

  250. of our sin.

  251. Look there with me.

  252. He says,

  253. we are guilty

  254. of transgression.

  255. What's that?

  256. That's rebellion.

  257. That is high treason

  258. against God,

  259. the King of Kings.

  260. He says,

  261. we are guilty,

  262. all of us,

  263. we are guilty

  264. of sin.

  265. We've all fallen short

  266. of the glory of God.

  267. He says,

  268. all of us,

  269. we're all guilty

  270. of iniquity.

  271. That's corruption.

  272. We're corrupted.

  273. Everything in us

  274. is twisted up

  275. and polluted.

  276. We are not

  277. as we ought to be.

  278. These three terms

  279. are the full picture here.

  280. These three terms

  281. are the most common

  282. three terms

  283. used in the Old Testament

  284. for our sin.

  285. In fact,

  286. all three terms

  287. show up together

  288. in another place

  289. in the Old Testament,

  290. Leviticus 16,

    Leviticus 16:21

  291. verse 21,

  292. which,

  293. if you want me

  294. to describe that to you,

  295. this is where Aaron

  296. is instructed

  297. to lay both of his hands

  298. on the head

  299. of a live goat

  300. and confess over it

  301. all the iniquities

  302. of the people of Israel

  303. and all their transgressions,

  304. all their sins,

  305. and he shall put them

  306. on the head of the goat

  307. and send it away

  308. into the wilderness.

  309. This is what we call

  310. expiation.

  311. It's a big word,

  312. but all it means

  313. is the full wickedness

  314. of the people

  315. is placed upon this goat

  316. and then he is sent out

  317. and all of their full sinfulness,

  318. all the fullness

  319. of their wickedness

  320. is sent out

  321. with that goat

  322. out of the camp

  323. and into the wilderness.

  324. I think David

  325. has that picture in mind

  326. here as he's writing

  327. this psalm.

  328. David uses

  329. these same three terms

  330. to give us

  331. a full picture

  332. of our depravity.

  333. He says,

  334. we are all guilty of sin,

  335. we are all guilty

  336. of iniquity,

  337. we are all guilty

  338. of transgression,

  339. and so our greatest need

  340. is for someone

  341. to remove that from us

  342. and get it as far away

  343. as the east is

  344. from the west.

  345. Do you see that

  346. as your greatest need?

  347. when you read

  348. these terms,

  349. do you see

  350. a reflection

  351. of your own heart

  352. here?

  353. If not,

  354. if you read this

  355. and you're thinking

  356. of someone else,

  357. you may be guilty

  358. of what David says

  359. in verse 2

  360. where he says,

  361. in whose spirit

  362. there is no deceit,

  363. you may be guilty

  364. of deceiving yourself

  365. into thinking

  366. that you're better off

  367. than you really are.

  368. 1 John 1.8,

  369. we just read it

  370. this morning,

  371. tells us,

  372. if we say

  373. we have no sin,

  374. we deceive ourselves

  375. and the truth

  376. is not in us.

  377. This is what David's

  378. talking about here

  379. in verse 2.

  380. Again,

  381. blessed is the man

  382. against whom

  383. the Lord counts

  384. no iniquity

  385. and in whose spirit

  386. there is no deceit,

  387. meaning,

  388. we're not trying

  389. to pretend

  390. to God,

  391. we're not trying

  392. to pretend

  393. to ourselves,

  394. we're not trying

  395. to pretend

  396. to one another

  397. that we're better off

  398. than we really are.

  399. David says

  400. that there is

  401. real and lasting

  402. blessing available

  403. for sinners

  404. of all kinds,

  405. transgressors,

  406. sinners,

  407. those who are

  408. riddled with iniquity.

  409. How?

  410. Stop deceiving yourself.

  411. Acknowledge your sin

  412. before God,

  413. confess your sin

  414. to the Lord,

  415. and experience

  416. the grace

  417. and blessing

  418. of forgiveness.

  419. forgiveness.

  420. David has experienced

  421. this incredible blessing.

  422. David,

  423. we know David

  424. is a sinner,

  425. right?

  426. And we don't know

  427. the full back story

  428. of the exact sin

  429. that led him

  430. to write this psalm,

  431. but we do know

  432. just reading the story

  433. of David,

  434. David was a great sinner,

  435. right?

  436. I mean,

  437. this is David

  438. who stole

  439. another man's wife

  440. while he was off

  441. fighting David's war,

  442. who took her,

  443. impregnated her,

  444. and then had her husband

  445. killed to cover it up.

  446. And David knows

  447. all about great sin,

  448. but here,

  449. in this psalm,

  450. he's telling us

  451. he knows all about

  452. a great God

  453. who forgives

  454. great sinners.

  455. In fact,

  456. look at this.

  457. This three-fold picture

  458. of our sin

  459. is met here

  460. with a three-fold response

  461. of God's grace.

  462. I love this.

  463. Look at this.

  464. David's transgression,

  465. forgiven.

  466. David's sin,

  467. covered.

  468. David's iniquity

  469. is not counted

  470. against him.

  471. This is a blessing

  472. that David's describing

  473. for us this morning.

  474. The glorious good news

  475. of the gospel

  476. is this,

  477. that as great

  478. and as deep

  479. as our sin is,

  480. and it is great,

  481. our God

  482. and His grace

  483. towards sinners

  484. is even greater.

  485. David knows

  486. what it's like

  487. to have all of his sin,

  488. all of his transgression,

  489. all of his iniquity

  490. removed from off

  491. of his shoulders.

  492. I'll give you

  493. another important term here.

  494. This is what it means

  495. to be justified.

  496. To be justified.

  497. Another weighty

  498. theological term.

  499. You know what it means?

  500. Counted righteous

  501. in the sight of God.

  502. Every religion

  503. seeks to answer

  504. that question.

  505. How can a sinner

  506. be made right

  507. with God?

  508. And every other religion

  509. gives you a ladder

  510. to climb your way

  511. up to Him.

  512. Only the gospel

  513. of God's grace

  514. says,

  515. you can't bear the weight,

  516. I will take it off

  517. your back for you.

  518. In fact,

  519. the Apostle Paul

  520. quotes this psalm

  521. in Romans chapter 4

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  522. to prove that very point,

  523. to prove his argument,

  524. that there is

  525. one way

  526. for sinners

  527. to be made right,

  528. declared righteous,

  529. justified before

  530. the sight of a holy God.

  531. One way.

  532. And it's this.

  533. Sinners can be

  534. counted righteous

  535. in the sight of God

  536. simply by confessing

  537. your sin

  538. and putting your faith

  539. in Jesus Christ.

  540. This is King David's

  541. explanation

  542. of true blessing.

  543. And church,

  544. it is the greatest

  545. blessing in the world.

  546. Amen?

  547. Do you grasp this?

  548. Do you share

  549. David's understanding

  550. of true blessing?

  551. I hope you do.

  552. But you should know

  553. that's only one aspect

  554. of this.

  555. And our second point,

  556. we see that David

  557. has personally

  558. experienced

  559. this great blessing.

  560. Second,

  561. we see true blessing

  562. experienced.

  563. And we see this

  564. in verses 3 through 5.

  565. Here in 3 through 5,

  566. we see the king's

  567. personal experience

  568. of true blessing.

  569. This is not just

  570. theory for him.

  571. It's not just

  572. like classroom knowledge.

  573. This is deeply

  574. personal for David.

  575. And we see this

  576. personal experience

  577. here in two parts.

  578. There's a before

  579. in verses 3 and 4

  580. and then there's

  581. an after

  582. in verse 5.

  583. You know,

  584. it's interesting

  585. when I read

  586. about that

  587. Viking legend,

  588. I actually learned

  589. that that record

  590. was broken

  591. in 2015.

  592. About 11 years ago,

  593. a guy named

  594. Hafthor Bjornsson,

  595. maybe you've heard

  596. of him,

  597. got up under

  598. a 1,433 pound tree

  599. and I watched

  600. the video,

  601. you can look it up,

  602. pull it up on YouTube,

  603. watch it later.

  604. and Hafthor Bjornsson

  605. took five baby steps

  606. forward with this

  607. incredible burden

  608. on his back.

  609. It's just incredibly

  610. impressive.

  611. But I watched the video

  612. and I'm telling you,

  613. as he did it,

  614. that man looked

  615. miserable.

  616. He looked like

  617. he was about to pop.

  618. His face was red,

  619. his neck was,

  620. the veins were bulging,

  621. he looked terrible

  622. until the weight

  623. came off

  624. of his shoulders.

  625. And then there was rejoicing

  626. and celebrating

  627. and cheering

  628. and everyone

  629. was rejoicing with him.

  630. That's exactly

  631. what's happening

  632. here with David.

  633. We see this clear

  634. before and after

  635. here in our psalm.

  636. Verses 3 and 4

  637. give us a picture

  638. of the before.

  639. This is David's agony

  640. of not confessing

  641. his sin.

  642. This is David still

  643. holding the weight

  644. on his back.

  645. David says,

  646. when I kept silent,

  647. my bones wasted

  648. away.

  649. He's falling apart.

  650. Ironically,

  651. because he's silent,

  652. he says he's groaning

  653. all day long.

  654. He's miserable.

  655. And we see a connection

  656. here with a psalm

  657. that was preached

  658. last week.

  659. Psalm 31,

    Psalms 31:10

  660. verse 10.

  661. There he said,

  662. his life is spent

  663. in sorrow.

  664. His strength fails

  665. because of his iniquity.

  666. His bones waste away.

  667. Bones are like

  668. his inner self.

  669. It's not just physical.

  670. This is all encompassing

  671. for David.

  672. He says his strength

  673. was dried up

  674. as by the heat

  675. of summer.

  676. I mean,

  677. go outside.

  678. My phone says

  679. there's a heat advisory

  680. today.

  681. I told you about

  682. my trip to Ghana

  683. last month,

  684. how hot it was there,

  685. 107 degrees.

  686. You know,

  687. every single day

  688. in Ghana,

  689. we would leave

  690. the house

  691. and drive by

  692. this giant lake

  693. right there,

  694. right in the neighborhood,

  695. except the thing was

  696. there was no water.

  697. It had been

  698. entirely dried up.

  699. You look at all

  700. the animals

  701. that walk by,

  702. they looked

  703. entirely dried up.

  704. And by the end

  705. of the day,

  706. the long day

  707. of working

  708. and teaching there,

  709. my strength

  710. was entirely

  711. dried up

  712. as by the heat

  713. of summer.

  714. David says

  715. that's what it's like

  716. to hold on

  717. to his sin.

  718. All of his strength,

  719. emotionally,

  720. physically,

  721. mentally,

  722. especially spiritually,

  723. is all dried up.

  724. He's got nothing

  725. left.

  726. Why?

  727. Because ultimately,

  728. he says,

  729. verse 4,

  730. God's hand

  731. was heavy

  732. against him.

  733. You see that

  734. in verse 4?

  735. Day and night,

  736. your hand,

  737. God,

  738. your hand

  739. was heavy

  740. upon me.

  741. Now stop right there

  742. for a minute.

  743. Isn't that mean

  744. of God?

  745. God?

  746. Now I thought

  747. God was supposed

  748. to help you

  749. when you're

  750. spiritually dry,

  751. right?

  752. I thought God

  753. was there

  754. to be a help

  755. and a lifeline

  756. and get you

  757. out of distress.

  758. I mean,

  759. isn't God

  760. just supposed

  761. to do nice

  762. things for us,

  763. right,

  764. and help us

  765. out when we need

  766. them?

  767. What in the world

  768. is going on here?

  769. David says

  770. God's hand

  771. was heavy

  772. upon him.

  773. Why

  774. would he do this?

  775. We need to know

  776. that God

  777. in his mercy

  778. will sometimes

  779. allow his people

  780. to feel

  781. the crushing

  782. weight

  783. of our sin.

  784. That is

  785. uncomfortable

  786. and we

  787. don't enjoy it.

  788. But this is

  789. mercy

  790. from the Lord.

  791. God

  792. lets

  793. David

  794. tremble

  795. and shake

  796. under that heavy

  797. weight.

  798. He lets him

  799. sweat.

  800. He lets him

  801. feel like

  802. it's about

  803. to fall down

  804. and crush

  805. him.

  806. Why?

  807. Why?

  808. So that

  809. he'll realize

  810. this is far

  811. too heavy

  812. for me.

  813. I can't

  814. hold this

  815. weight.

  816. I'm not

  817. strong enough

  818. to hold it.

  819. So that

  820. he'll cry

  821. out to the

  822. Lord for

  823. help because

  824. the fact is

  825. you will not

  826. cry out for

  827. help until

  828. you've come

  829. to the end

  830. of your own

  831. strength.

  832. death.

  833. You will

  834. not cry

  835. out to

  836. the Lord

  837. until you

  838. realize that

  839. only he

  840. can remove

  841. this burden

  842. from you.

  843. That's

  844. exactly what

  845. happens here

  846. in verse 5.

  847. Look there

  848. with me.

  849. This is the

  850. after here

  851. in verse 5.

  852. He was

  853. silent but

  854. now finally

  855. at last he

  856. confesses his

  857. sin to the

  858. Lord and he

  859. does so with

  860. a threefold

  861. confession.

  862. Look there.

  863. He says my

  864. sin I

  865. acknowledge my

  866. sin to you.

  867. My

  868. iniquity I

  869. did not

  870. cover my

  871. iniquity.

  872. Why?

  873. I can't

  874. cover my

  875. iniquity only

  876. you can

  877. cover it.

  878. He says my

  879. transgressions I

  880. will confess my

  881. transgressions to

  882. the Lord.

  883. This is a

  884. full and

  885. total complete

  886. confession.

  887. David's not

  888. holding anything

  889. back.

  890. He lets God

  891. hold all of

  892. the weight and

  893. I have to ask

  894. you friend have

  895. you ever spoken

  896. with God like

  897. this?

  898. have you

  899. ever confessed

  900. your sin in

  901. full to the

  902. Lord?

  903. And not just

  904. broad strokes in

  905. general.

  906. I'm sorry let's

  907. move on.

  908. I mean have you

  909. ever gotten

  910. alone with God

  911. taken full

  912. inventory of all

  913. the ways that

  914. you've fallen

  915. short as far as

  916. your mind can

  917. reach.

  918. Asked him to

  919. show you God

  920. uncover even

  921. hidden sins in

  922. my heart that I

  923. might bring them

  924. before you.

  925. Have you ever

  926. given full

  927. account of your

  928. sin to the

  929. Lord and

  930. confessed the

  931. fullness of your

  932. sin, the

  933. fullness of your

  934. iniquity, the

  935. fullness of your

  936. transgressions to

  937. him?

  938. If not then

  939. friend you are

  940. missing out on

  941. the greatest

  942. blessing in the

  943. world.

  944. Maybe one reason

  945. that we don't

  946. do this is

  947. because we

  948. think in some

  949. way maybe God

  950. doesn't want to

  951. hear it.

  952. Maybe we just

  953. think God in

  954. some way he's

  955. tired of dealing

  956. with repeat

  957. offenders like

  958. me.

  959. God doesn't

  960. want to hear

  961. that.

  962. We tend to

  963. think that

  964. way don't

  965. we?

  966. But I would

  967. argue if we

  968. think that way

  969. about God we're

  970. not thinking

  971. about the God

  972. of the Bible.

  973. And if we

  974. think that way

  975. about God if we

  976. think that God

  977. is harsh towards

  978. sinners that he's

  979. unforgiving that

  980. he's reluctant

  981. in any way to

  982. hear us and to

  983. cleanse us and to

  984. forgive us guess

  985. what?

  986. We have created a

  987. God after our

  988. own image as a

  989. figment of our

  990. imagination.

  991. The God of the

  992. Bible praise God

  993. is not like us.

  994. Just notice what

  995. happens here when

  996. David confesses his

  997. sin.

  998. It's so simple

  999. here but it's my

  1000. favorite part of

  1001. the song.

  1002. He says I will

  1003. confess my

  1004. transgressions to

  1005. the Lord and

  1006. build up.

  1007. I drum roll how

  1008. is God going to

  1009. respond?

  1010. Will he be angry?

  1011. Will he chide?

  1012. Will he give a

  1013. lecture here?

  1014. What's he going to

  1015. do?

  1016. And you forgave

  1017. the iniquity of

  1018. my sin.

  1019. What?

  1020. Just like that?

  1021. Is that easy

  1022. really?

  1023. Are you serious?

  1024. No terms and

  1025. conditions?

  1026. No delay?

  1027. No lecture?

  1028. No.

  1029. Just quick

  1030. immediate

  1031. prompt

  1032. forgiveness of

  1033. sins.

  1034. makes you wonder

  1035. what took him so

  1036. long to confess?

  1037. But church what

1038. takes us so long to

  1039. go and confess our

  1040. sins to the Lord?

  1041. Do you realize that

  1042. the same immediate

  1043. forgiveness paid in

  1044. full atonement for

  1045. your sin, covering of

  1046. all your transgressions,

  1047. removal of all of

  1048. your burden?

  1049. That is available to

  1050. the very worst of

  1051. sinners right now if

  1052. you would simply

  1053. confess your sin and

1054. come to the Lord in

  1055. faith.

  1056. If we confess our

  1057. sins, 1 John 1

  1058. 9, he is faithful

1059. and just to forgive us

  1060. our sins and to

  1061. cleanse us from all

  1062. unrighteousness.

  1063. It really is that

  1064. simple.

  1065. David the king knows

  1066. that this is the

  1067. greatest blessing in

  1068. the world.

  1069. He has personally

  1070. experienced it and

1071. so third what we see

1072. in our third and final

  1073. point this morning is

  1074. that he desires nothing

1075. more than for all his

  1076. people to know and

  1077. experience this blessing

  1078. as well.

1079. Which is what we see

  1080. here in verses 6

  1081. through 8.

  1082. Third we see true

  1083. blessing extended.

1084. Look there to verse 6.

  1085. The king's attention

  1086. turns from himself now.

  1087. He is thinking about

  1088. his people.

  1089. He calls them.

  1090. He says,

  1091. Therefore in light of

  1092. all of this great

  1093. blessing that is

  1094. available to you,

  1095. therefore let everyone

  1096. who is godly offer

  1097. prayer to you, the

1098. Lord, at a time when

  1099. you may be found.

1100. Surely in the rush of

  1101. great waters they

  1102. shall not reach him.

  1103. You are a hiding

  1104. place for me.

  1105. You preserve me from

  1106. trouble.

  1107. You see the king's

  1108. desire, the king's

  1109. burden here is for

  1110. all his people to

  1111. know this blessing.

  1112. And he knows that

1113. this need is so great

1114. and it is so urgent

  1115. that the people must

1116. call out to the Lord

  1117. right now without

  1118. delay.

  1119. Why?

  1120. Because now is the

  1121. time when this

  1122. blessing can be had.

1123. He says now is the

  1124. time when the Lord

  1125. may be found.

  1126. The rush of great

  1127. waters of God's

  1128. judgment will come

  1129. quickly and suddenly

1130. just like in the time

  1131. of Noah's flood and

1132. in that day this window

  1133. of opportunity to find

  1134. this blessing of

  1135. forgiveness, that

  1136. window will be closed

  1137. shut.

  1138. There will be no

  1139. opportunity to repent.

  1140. The time of God's

  1141. offer of forgiveness

  1142. forgiveness is now.

  1143. A couple of weeks

1144. ago we had Chad come

1145. and preach for us in

  1146. God's providence.

1147. That was not what we

  1148. had planned but that

  1149. was what he had

  1150. planned.

  1151. And he referenced a

  1152. sermon from Charles

  1153. Spurgeon called

  1154. Now.

  1155. And some of you,

  1156. several of you told

  1157. me that that was

  1158. meaningful for you

1159. and some of you even

1160. looked it up and sent

  1161. me a further

  1162. explanation of that

  1163. sermon.

1164. I'm going to quote it

  1165. for you.

  1166. Spurgeon says,

  1167. the great mischief of

1168. the most of men is

  1169. that they procrastinate.

1170. It is not that they

  1171. resolved to be damned

  1172. but that they resolved

  1173. to be saved tomorrow.

  1174. It's not that they

  1175. reject Christ forever

  1176. but they reject

  1177. Christ today.

  1178. Here comes the beauty

  1179. of my text.

1180. As a sinner under the

1181. gospel I pray thee to

  1182. recollect that now is

  1183. the accepted time.

  1184. The most of my

  1185. unconverted hearers do

  1186. not believe this.

  1187. I know what you're

  1188. saying.

  1189. You say, I've had a

  1190. great many thoughts

  1191. about religion but why

  1192. does thou not believe

  1193. in Christ now?

  1194. Well, you say, I'll

  1195. endeavor to think

  1196. seriously of it but

  1197. what will be the

  1198. result of your

  1199. thinking?

  1200. After you've thought

1201. ever so much, do you

  1202. imagine you're going to

  1203. think your way into

  1204. salvation?

  1205. If the command were

1206. think and be saved, I

  1207. would cheerfully allow

  1208. you a month's thinking.

  1209. But the command is

  1210. believe in the Lord

  1211. Jesus Christ and now

  1212. is the accepted time.

  1213. David says, sinner,

  1214. come now.

  1215. Seek him now.

1216. The doors of the ark

1217. are open now but soon

  1218. they will be shut.

  1219. God, his call to

  1220. confess your sin to

  1221. him is urgent.

  1222. And look what David

  1223. says happens when you

  1224. do.

  1225. He says, you surround

  1226. me with shouts of

  1227. deliverance.

1228. I love when we get to

  1229. celebrate a baptism.

1230. We're going to get to

1231. do that in a few weeks,

  1232. Lord willing.

1233. And we get to hear

  1234. someone's testimony how

1235. by the grace of God

1236. they saw the depth of

1237. their sin and they saw

  1238. their need for a

  1239. Savior.

  1240. They recognize they

  1241. couldn't lift that

  1242. weight anymore and so

1243. they call out to Christ

  1244. for grace of salvation

1245. and then they go down

  1246. into the waters and

  1247. they come up.

  1248. They're buried with

  1249. him in baptism.

  1250. They're raised to walk

1251. in newness of life and

1252. then as they come up,

  1253. what happens?

  1254. What happens out here

  1255. on the lawn,

  1256. see we bang?

  1257. There is cheering and

  1258. celebrating.

  1259. There are big wet

  1260. hugs and there's a

  1261. feast afterwards.

  1262. We surround them with

  1263. shouts of deliverance.

  1264. That's how it's meant

  1265. to be.

1266. David longs to see all

  1267. his people know this

  1268. blessing.

  1269. And so he says,

  1270. verse 8,

  1271. I will instruct you

1272. and teach you in the way

  1273. you should go.

1274. I will counsel you with

  1275. my eye upon you.

  1276. Don't be like a horse

1277. horse or a mule without

  1278. understanding, which must

1279. be curbed with bit and

1280. bridle or it will not

  1281. stay near you.

1282. This is the burden of the

  1283. king for his people.

  1284. But do you realize,

1285. church, this is also the

1286. burden of your pastors for

  1287. you?

  1288. Sometimes, as a pastor, I

1289. can say that I know how

  1290. David feels.

1291. Week after week, we hold

1292. out to you the greatest

  1293. blessing in the world.

1294. And sometimes we see our

  1295. people walking down some

1296. path that we know is not

1297. good, we know it's not

  1298. satisfying for them.

1299. Sometimes we know, we see

  1300. non-believers here and

1301. reject this offer of the

  1302. gospel every single week.

1303. And we just want to get

1304. you to come and take it.

1305. Would you just rest in this

1306. blessing of God's grace for

  1307. you in Christ?

1308. Would you just receive this

  1309. greatest?

  1310. Nothing else will satisfy

  1311. like this.

1312. Would you please just come?

1313. We want to just curb you

1314. with bit and bridle and make

1315. you come, but we can't.

1316. Only by the power of the

1317. Spirit can He break you and

1318. show you your weakness and

1319. drive you to His strength.

1320. But that's our burden for

  1321. you.

1322. And that's the burden of

  1323. godly parents for their

  1324. children.

1325. I know you pray for them,

1326. you pray for safety, for

1327. their lives, for their jobs,

1328. just for them to be blessed

  1329. in every way.

1330. But above all else, the

1331. burden of godly parents for

1332. your children is that they

1333. would know this blessing of

  1334. forgiveness of sins.

1335. This is the greatest way we

  1336. can bless our community,

  1337. church.

1338. We can bless this community

1339. of all and all and Mount

  1340. Pleasant and Hugee and

  1341. McClellanville.

  1342. We're in a lot of places.

1343. We can bless those communities

1344. in a lot of different ways,

1345. but the number one way we can

  1346. bless these communities, you

  1347. know what it is?

1348. It's to make certain that they

1349. have heard this invitation to

1350. come and have their sins

  1351. forgiven in Christ.

1352. This is the blessing and the

1353. burden of the king for his

  1354. people.

1355. But ultimately, church, I hope

1356. you see, this is the burden

1357. of Christ Jesus himself for

  1358. his people.

1359. David's desire for his people

  1360. to know this blessing

  1361. anticipates Jesus' desire, the

1362. desire of the true king for

1363. all of his people to know this

  1364. blessing.

  1365. Jesus understands true

1366. blessing the same way David

  1367. does.

  1368. Jesus understands his

  1369. explanation of true blessing

1370. is the forgiveness of sins,

1371. that we may be made right with

  1372. the holy God.

  1373. And Jesus never experienced

1374. that blessing by his own

  1375. right.

1376. He never sinned, so he never

1377. needed the forgiveness of his

1378. sins, but yet he was made sin

  1379. for us.

1380. Jesus came so that you,

1381. sinner, may know the blessing

  1382. of forgiveness and be

1383. reconciled to God through his

  1384. blood.

1385. Jesus' mission was that sinners

1386. like us would know true and

  1387. lasting blessing.

1388. He came to extend this blessing

  1389. to us.

1390. Purchased by his own blood,

1391. he is the one upon whom the

1392. Lord God himself has placed all

1393. of the sin, all of the

  1394. iniquity, all of the

  1395. transgression of his people,

1396. so that by faith in him, all

1397. of our burden is removed as far

1398. as the east is from the west.

  1399. Have you experienced this

1400. blessing by faith in Christ?

1401. If not, then friend, would you

1402. consider the two paths ahead of

  1403. you?

1404. The psalm ends here with a

  1405. reflection and an application

  1406. for us.

1407. Here in verse 10, David reflects

1408. on the two very different paths

1409. ahead of him and his people, but

1410. in fact, ahead of all of us this

  1411. morning.

1412. He says, many are the sorrows of

1413. the wicked, but steadfast love

1414. surrounds the one who trusts in

  1415. the Lord.

1416. Do you see those two paths?

1417. David has known the sorrow of

1418. holding on to his sin.

  1419. I have known it.

1420. I have known the crushing weight

1421. of holding on to my sin, but

1422. now by God's grace, David and I

  1423. have something in common,

  1424. church.

1425. God has lifted the weight, and

1426. in Christ I am surrounded by the

1427. steadfast love of the Lord for

  1428. me.

1429. Do you know this blessing?

1430. If not, then friend, what would

1431. keep you from calling out to the

1432. Lord in faith right now?

1433. Maybe for the first time, but even

1434. so, even as we've been walking with

1435. the Lord for a long time, Christian,

  1436. I know there's still the temptation

1437. to put that weight back on your

  1438. shoulders, right?

1439. To carry this weight of your sin.

1440. Maybe there's some sin lingering in

1441. your life even now that you need to

1442. just take a moment this afternoon or

1443. even right now to confess to the

  1444. Lord.

1445. He urges you to come and receive this

  1446. blessing of forgiveness.

1447. And when you do, David makes it clear

1448. how we ought to respond.

1449. Look at this, verse 11.

1450. This threefold picture of our sin that

1451. was met with a threefold covering of

1452. God's grace now results in a threefold

  1453. response of joy.

  1454. Look at there.

1455. He says, be glad in the Lord and

1456. rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy,

1457. all you upright in heart.

1458. Be glad and rejoice and shout.

1459. That's the response of someone whose

  1460. burden has been lifted.

1461. You all are probably familiar with

  1462. John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress.

  1463. It's an allegory of the Christian's

1464. experience in this life journeying to

  1465. the celestial city.

1466. And if you know the story, you know

1467. that the whole time Christian is

1468. weighed down by this heavy burden on

  1469. his back.

1470. And at times it's so heavy on him that

1471. he can hardly even move.

1472. I love the scene that he paints.

1473. I'm going to read it for you.

1474. When Christian finally comes to the

1475. foot of the cross, he says,

1476. now I saw in my dream that the highway

1477. up which Christian was to go was

1478. fenced on either side with the wall.

1479. And that wall was called salvation up

  1480. this way.

1481. Therefore, it had burdened Christian run,

1482. but not without great difficulty because

1483. of the load on his back.

1484. He ran thus till he came at a place

1485. somewhat ascending and upon that place

  1486. stood across.

1487. And a little below in the bottom, a grave.

1488. So I saw in my dream that just as Christian

1489. came up with the cross, his burden loosed

1490. from off his shoulders and fell off from

1491. his back and began to tumble and so

1492. continued to do till it came to the mouth

1493. of the grave where it fell in and I saw it

  1494. no more.

1495. Then was Christian glad and lightsome and said

1496. with a merry heart, he has given me rest by

1497. his sorrow and life by his death.

1498. Then he stood still a while and to look and

1499. wonder for it was very surprising to him that

1500. the sight of the cross should thus ease him of

  1501. his burden.

1502. He looked therefore and looked again, even till the

1503. springs that were in his head sent the waters down

  1504. his cheeks.

1505. Now, as he stood looking and weeping, behold, three

1506. shining ones came to him and saluted to him with

  1507. peace be to thee.

1508. So the first said to him, thy sins be forgiven thee.

1509. And the second stripped him of his rags and clothed him

1510. with a change of raiment.

1511. And the third also set a mark on his forehead and gave

1512. him a roll with a seal upon it, which he bid him look on

1513. as he ran and that he should give it in at the celestial

  1514. gate.

1515. And so they went their way.

1516. Then Christian gave three leaps for joy and went on

  1517. singing.

1518. Thus far did I come laden with sin, nor could I ease the

  1519. grief I was in.

1520. Till I came hither, what a place is this?

1521. Must hear be the beginning of my bliss.

1522. Must hear the burden fall off my back.

1523. Must hear the strings that bound it to me crack.

1524. Blessed cross, blessed grave, blessed rather be the man that

1525. was put to shame for me.

1526. Friend, if you are burdened by sin, crushed under a weight that

1527. you cannot lift, the good news of the gospel is that Jesus is

1528. strong enough to bear your burden.

  1529. In fact, he has.

1530. Christ has borne the full weight of our sin.

1531. Christ has suffered and died under the rush of the great waters of

  1532. God's judgment.

1533. Judgment that he did not deserve.

  1534. Judgment that we deserve.

1535. He has lifted our burden from off of our backs, placed it upon his, and

1536. risen from the grave in victory, never to die again.

1537. So that now he stands to offer forgiveness and true blessing to any who

  1538. would come.

1539. Father, the only right response to this is to rejoice, God, in the great blessing of the

  1540. forgiveness of our sins.

1541. And to bring them freely and quickly to you, knowing, God, that you stand ready and

1542. willing to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1543. Father, even as we stand to sing, God, my sin or the bliss of this glorious thought, my sin,

1544. not in part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more.

  1545. Praise the Lord.

1546. Praise the Lord, O my soul.

1547. Pray this in Jesus' name.

  1548. Amen.

  1549. Amen.
