    Psalms 36 chapter mention

  2. ! Psalm chapter 36.

    Psalms 36 chapter mention

  3. We're continuing our series through the Psalms this morning.

  4. And when you found that, Psalm 36, would you please stand in honor of the reading of the Word of the Lord.

  5. Psalm 36 is to the choir master of David, the servant of the Lord.

  6. Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart.

  7. There is no fear of God before his eyes.

  8. For he flatters himself in his own eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.

  9. The words of his mouth are trouble and deceit.

  10. He has ceased to act wisely and do good.

  11. He plots trouble while on his bed.

  12. He sets himself in a way that is not good.

  13. He does not reject evil.

  14. Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens.

  15. Your faithfulness to the clouds.

  16. Your righteousness is like the mountains of God.

  17. Your judgments are like the great deep.

  18. Man and beast you save, O Lord.

  19. How precious is your steadfast love, O God.

  20. The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

  21. They feast on the abundance of your house.

  22. And you give them drink from the river of your delights.

  23. For with you is the fountain of life.

  24. In your light do we see light.

  25. O continue your steadfast love to those who know you.

  26. And your righteousness to the upright of heart.

  27. Let not the foot of arrogance come upon me.

  28. Nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.

  29. There the evildoers lie fallen.

  30. They are thrust down, unable to rise.

  31. The grass withers and the flower fades.

  32. But the word of the Lord endures forever.

  33. Father God, we pray now.

  34. Would you show us the greatness of your steadfast love for us in Christ?

  35. Help us not only to see it, but to marvel at it.

  36. And not only to marvel at it, but to be satisfied in it.

  37. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  38. Amen.

  39. You may be seated.

  40. With all the rain that we've gotten over the past week, every now and then, the lights

  41. at our house flickered on and off and threatened the possibility of a power outage.

  42. And I remembered how much bigger a deal a power outage was when I was younger than they are

  43. today.

  44. I grew up in the time when we didn't have smartphones in our pockets with instant flashlights that

  45. you could press at any moment to provide light in the room.

  46. And so I distinctly remember every now and then there would be a storm.

  47. The lights would go out and we couldn't see a thing.

  48. And so my parents would be scrambling in the dark to find a match or a candle or a flashlight.

  49. And until that light was lit, darkness had complete control of the room.

  50. But once the light came on, the darkness was dispelled.

  51. I wonder if you have ever been overwhelmed by darkness.

  52. darkness.

  53. And the world that we live in can often be described as dark.

  54. And I know that it's sometimes hard for us to remember that, especially where we live

  55. here in this beautiful place of the world here in Allendal or Mount Pleasant, often called

  56. Mount Perfect or Mount Plastic even.

  57. But when you peel back the shiny, luxurious exterior, the world that we live in, even here where we

  58. live in a place of luxury, is dark.

  59. And sometimes that darkness can be overwhelming.

  60. I remind you of what I mentioned last week.

  61. We live in a country where over a million unborn babies are aborted in this country legally

  62. by the law of the land every single year.

  63. We live in a world where Christians are often persecuted, maybe socially here, but beyond

  64. this country, persecuted physically and even killed for professing their faith.

  65. We live in a place where advancements in technology are a good thing, but now especially with the

  66. rise of artificial intelligence, financial scams have become all the more sophisticated with

  67. AI-fabricated distress calls that mimic the exact voices of your loved ones and contribute

  68. to scamming the elderly out of billions of dollars every single year.

  69. It's estimated that here in the U.S. there are over a million people trapped in conditions

  70. of modern-day slavery and forced labor.

  71. I don't tell you all this to depress you, although it is disheartening, but to illustrate the fact

  72. that all of us are aware of, the world that we live in is very, very dark.

  73. And sometimes you can wonder, well, where can we look when the darkness seems so overwhelming?

  74. Where can God's people look to find comfort and assurance, even hope or security in light

  75. of the great wickedness all around us?

  76. And what hope do we have to offer others who are living here in the midst of this dark world?

  77. Well, here in Psalm chapter 36, David gives us the answer to all of these questions.

    Psalms 36 chapter mention

  78. And he tells us that here in a dark world, we must cling to the light of the glory of God.

  79. In the midst of darkness, God's people look to Him and satisfy our soul in Him.

  80. So let's take a look as we ask the question, how do God's people navigate the darkness?

  81. This will be our outline this morning if you're taking notes.

  82. How do God's people navigate the darkness?

  83. And we'll see it in three parts this morning.

  84. First, David shows us we must examine the wickedness of man.

  85. Examine the wickedness of man.

  86. We see this here in verses 1 through 4.

  87. Look there with me.

  88. And here David shows us what it is like in the dark.

  89. This is the darkness when the lights are off.

  90. And here's my disclaimer.

  91. This picture of wickedness is not pretty.

  92. This is a very blunt and honest, unattractive look at the sinfulness of man.

  93. This is not an attractive, popular message, but it's here before us and so we deal with it.

  94. David gives us a full picture here of the wickedness of man.

  95. And what we see here is a picture of what we call total depravity.

  96. It's not that we're all as bad as we possibly could be,

  97. but rather that every single part of us, inside and out, has been corrupted by the darkness of sin.

  98. Look at this description that he gives us here of the wicked man.

  99. He goes head to toe here in verses 1 through 4.

  100. He says in verse 1,

  101. Their heart is corrupt.

  102. Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart.

  103. Here transgression itself is personified,

  104. almost like wisdom is personified in the book of Proverbs.

  105. And transgression speaks to the wicked.

  106. It has this deep hold on the heart of the wicked.

  107. It's not just empty words in his ears.

  108. It's resonating with him deep in his heart.

  109. The darkness, the wickedness begins here in the heart.

  110. And we should understand that the wicked actions and the sinful words and the sinful attitudes

  111. that we see coming out of the exterior,

  112. those are like warning lights on the dashboard

  113. that show us that something is wrong on the interior.

  114. The human heart, left to itself, apart from the grace of God, is wicked.

  115. Jeremiah tells us the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick.

  116. You should know, follow your heart is terrible advice.

  117. David says the wicked's heart is corrupt.

  118. Not only that, but his eyes are corrupt.

  119. He says there is no fear of God before his eyes.

  120. This is someone who lives in open rebellion against God

  121. and simply does not care.

  122. He doesn't fear God's wrath.

  123. He laughs off all this religious talk about hell.

  124. He thinks all that religious talk of a God who sees every act

  125. and hears every word and knows every thought

  126. and can discern every intention of the heart.

  127. That's just a bunch of nonsense.

  128. He cares nothing about the coming day of judgment

  129. when all will be exposed.

  130. All he wants to do is live free from all of this

  131. and so he suppresses it.

  132. He has no fear of God in his eyes.

  133. In fact, he says he flatters himself in his own eyes.

  134. He convinces himself that his iniquity cannot be found out

  135. and cannot be hated.

  136. This wicked man is self-deceived.

  137. And he's deceived himself into thinking,

  138. what I do in the privacy of my own home is my business.

  139. It can't be found out.

  140. It can't be hated.

  141. It can't be dealt with at all.

  142. Now Moses warned the Israelites about this exact sort of attitude

  143. all the way back in Deuteronomy chapter 29.

    Deuteronomy 29 chapter mention

  144. Listen to what he says.

  145. He warns the community of Israel,

  146. Beware lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit,

  147. one who when he hears the words of this sworn covenant,

  148. blesses himself, flatters himself in his heart,

  149. saying, I shall be safe although I walk in the stubbornness of my heart.

  150. This will lead to the sweeping away of the moist and the dry alike.

  151. The Lord will not be willing to forgive him,

  152. but rather the anger of the Lord and his jealousy will smoke against that man.

  153. And the curses written in this book will settle upon him,

  154. and the Lord will blot out his name from under heaven.

  155. The wicked man does not fear God.

  156. He lives in open rebellion.

  157. And so, verse 3,

  158. The words of his mouth are trouble and deceit.

  159. His mouth is corrupt.

  160. Jesus tells us in Matthew 12 that a tree is known by its fruit.

  161. He looks the Pharisees right in the eye and he says,

  162. You brood of vipers, how can you speak good when you are evil?

  163. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

  164. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good,

  165. and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.

  166. I tell you, on the day of judgment,

  167. people will give account for every careless word that they speak.

  168. For by your words you will be justified,

  169. and by your words you will be condemned.

  170. He says the wicked man's mouth is corrupt.

  171. He says his hands and feet are corrupt.

  172. He has ceased to act wisely and to do good.

  173. His mind is corrupt.

  174. He plots trouble while he's on his bed.

  175. I mean, this is where all the AI scams and the abortion industry

  176. and the human trafficking and all the other evil in the world begins.

  177. It's in those quiet moments where you're left with your own thoughts.

  178. What is it that your mind goes to?

  179. The wicked, David says,

  180. is plotting wickedness from a corrupt mind.

  181. In fact, his very will is corrupt.

  182. Look what he says.

  183. He sets himself in a way that is not good.

  184. He does not reject evil.

  185. This is the will of a sinner.

  186. You know, we often maybe talk about free will,

  187. and what that means biblically is that people actually choose what they do.

  188. That is true.

  189. You choose what you do.

  190. What it doesn't mean is that your will is neutral.

  191. All of us choose according to our nature.

  192. There's a reason that birds don't swim and fish don't fly

  193. and dogs don't quack and ducks don't bark

  194. and the wicked don't reject evil.

  195. What is it?

  196. It's because we all act and choose according to our nature.

  197. And biblically, David is telling us his very nature,

  198. the nature of a wicked man is that from head to toe he is ruled by sin.

  199. The biblical word for that isn't freedom.

  200. It's slavery.

  201. It's a dark picture, isn't it?

  202. When we look around and we see the darkness of the world all around us,

  203. we should understand it for what it is.

  204. This is a world that is lost and enslaved by the powers of sin.

  205. But we should also understand that apart from the grace of God

  206. that liberates the sinful nature,

  207. that frees us from the power of sin,

  208. apart from the grace of God,

  209. friend, this is not just darkness out there around us.

  210. This is us.

  211. This is the point that Paul makes in Romans chapter 3

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  212. when he quotes this exact passage and others

  213. and says,

  214. None is righteous.

  215. No, not one.

  216. No one understands.

  217. No one seeks for God.

  218. Not even you.

  219. Not even me.

  220. All have turned aside.

  221. Together they have become worthless.

  222. No one does good.

  223. Not even one.

  224. Their throat is an open grave.

  225. They use their tongues to deceive.

  226. The venom of asps is under their lips.

  227. Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.

  228. Their feet are swift to shed blood.

  229. In their paths are ruin and misery.

  230. The way of peace they have not known.

  231. There is no fear of God before their eyes.

  232. The picture that the Bible gives us is dark.

  233. The wicked are totally, absolutely consumed with evil.

  234. And friend, if the psalm ended here,

  235. we would leave here in absolute despair, wouldn't we?

  236. But notice what David does next.

  237. David shifts the perspective back here in verses 5 through 9

  238. to give us just about the greatest contrast you can possibly imagine.

  239. Against this dark backdrop of sin,

  240. in the midst of this great darkness,

  241. he shows us the light of the glory of God.

  242. And he calls us to fix our eyes there.

  243. This is our hope in the midst of darkness.

  244. This is what he shows us in verses 5 through 9.

  245. Look there.

  246. Second, David says,

  247. we must exalt our glorious God in the midst of the darkness.

  248. Exalt our glorious God.

  249. Look there to 5 through 9.

  250. There could not be a more drastic contrast than what we see here.

  251. This is darkness and light, night and day.

  252. David draws our attention here to the covenant attributes of our God.

  253. He says, fix our eyes on the steadfast love of the Lord.

  254. Fix your eyes on the steadfast love of the Lord.

  255. We've heard that term,

  256. but it's possible that you may not know exactly what that means.

  257. The steadfast love of the Lord.

  258. This is God's covenant love for His people.

  259. This is God's faithfulness to the promises that He has made to His people.

  260. And ultimately, we know that this is God's love for His covenant people in Christ.

  261. Isaiah says in Isaiah 54 verse 10,

    Isaiah 54:10

  262. the mountains may depart and the hills may be removed,

  263. but my steadfast love shall not depart from you.

  264. This steady, rock solid, enduring love is ours in Christ's church.

  265. But even on His side of the cross,

  266. David's able to look at the steadfast love of God

  267. and marvel that His steadfast love extends to the heavens.

  268. His faithfulness extends to the clouds.

  269. He says, look there if you're overwhelmed by the darkness.

  270. But also, he says, fix your eyes on the righteousness of the Lord.

  271. He is perfectly pure.

  272. I remember going to pick out Amanda's engagement ring,

  273. and you learn all sorts of new stuff when you go to buy a ring.

  274. All the four C's and all that.

  275. Cut clarity, carrot, and I forget the fourth one.

  276. I don't know what it is.

  277. But where they really get you is in the purity of the diamond, right?

  278. They hold it out against this black cloth.

  279. They slide it out to you.

  280. They put it under the microscope.

  281. You spin it around,

  282. and you can see every little minor imperfection.

  283. Not so with God.

  284. Here, against this black backdrop of our sin,

  285. we see that there is not the slightest imperfection in our God.

  286. There is not the slightest hint of evil.

  287. There is not the slightest inclination to wickedness.

  288. John tells us, God is light.

  289. In him there is no darkness at all.

  290. Our God is not just holy.

  291. He is holy, holy, holy.

  292. This is the refrain of heaven.

  293. Revelation chapter 4.

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  294. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,

  295. who was and is and is to come.

  296. His righteousness, David says,

  297. is like the mountains of God.

  298. It's strong.

  299. It's stable.

  300. It's towering.

  301. It's enduring.

  302. It's beautiful.

  303. And again,

  304. the righteousness of our God,

  305. it shines forth most clearly in Christ Jesus,

  306. who is the perfect Son of God,

  307. who is the radiance of the glory of God

  308. and the exact imprint of His nature.

  309. He is the embodiment of holy God in human flesh.

  310. David says,

  311. would you just marvel at this faithful holy God?

  312. His judgments are like the great deep.

  313. All life owes itself to the work of this great God,

  314. man and beast alike.

  315. Who can comprehend the ways of God?

  316. And when we stand back and we just think for a moment,

  317. and when we zoom out of all the chaos of life

  318. and all the overwhelming darkness of day-to-day life

  319. here in a fallen world,

  320. when we think about God's works of salvation

  321. and creation and providence,

  322. but especially salvation,

  323. what He's done for us in Christ,

  324. we say with Paul,

  325. oh, the depths of the riches and the wisdom

  326. and the knowledge of God.

  327. How unsearchable are His judgments

  328. and how inscrutable are His ways.

  329. You just marvel at the wisdom

  330. and the ways of this God.

  331. Can you imagine a greater contrast

  332. in what David shows us here?

  333. Derek Kidner says,

  334. here is a whole world to explore,

  335. a broad place to be brought into,

  336. unsearchable, impregnable, inexhaustible,

  337. yet for all that, welcoming and hospitable.

  338. He says,

  339. it is only man's world that is cramping.

  340. Human fickleness makes a drooping contrast

  341. to this towering covenant love and faithfulness.

  342. Human standards where all is relative

  343. are a marshland beside the exacting,

  344. exhilarating mountains of His righteousness.

  345. Human assessments are shallowness itself

  346. in comparison with His judgments.

  347. David holds this diamond of God's glory

  348. in his hand against the black backdrop

  349. of the wickedness of man

  350. and he turns it every which way

  351. and says,

  352. would you just look and marvel

  353. at the glory of God?

  354. Church, do you ever marvel

  355. at the glory of God?

  356. Do you find yourself considering His attributes

  357. when you're overwhelmed

  358. by the darkness of this world?

  359. David says,

  360. fix your eyes on Him.

  361. Remember who He is,

  362. but we can't stop there.

  363. We can't stop there.

  364. Pay close attention to this church

  365. because this is absolutely crucial for us to get.

  366. David moves from talking about the glory of God

  367. in verses 5 through 6

  368. to treasuring God

  369. in verses 7 through 9.

  370. And this is just an incredible shift

  371. that takes place here.

  372. Look what he says in verse 7.

  373. How precious is your steadfast love,

  374. O God, he says in verse 7.

  375. How precious is your steadfast love.

  376. The children of mankind

  377. take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

  378. See, there is an eternity of difference.

  379. between knowing that God is faithful

  380. and knowing that God is righteous

  381. and knowing that God is just

  382. and knowing that God is wise,

  383. knowing that God is good,

  384. and actually experiencing

  385. these glorious truths for yourself.

  386. There is an eternity of difference

  387. between being able to list off attributes

  388. and loving this great God for who He is.

  389. If you're freezing out in the dark,

  390. you don't need a lecture,

  391. a bunch of true facts about the heat.

  392. You need to get up close to the fire

  393. and feel His warmth

  394. and see by His light.

  395. And this is what David's getting at here.

  396. He says God's steadfast love

  397. is not just true.

  398. It is precious to those who love Him.

  399. God's people don't just know

  400. that He's able to save.

  401. They take refuge in the shadow of His wings.

  402. It is not enough

  403. just to be able to talk about this God.

  404. You must treasure Him in your heart.

  405. No one has been more helpful for me

  406. in understanding this

  407. than my good friends John Piper

  408. and Jonathan Edwards.

  409. John Piper has famously coined the phrase,

  410. God is most glorified in us

  411. when we are most satisfied in Him.

  412. God is most glorified in us

  413. when we are most satisfied in Him.

  414. Church, this is why our mission as a church,

  415. what is it?

  416. We exist to magnify the glory of God

  417. in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  418. How?

  419. Way number one,

  420. by enjoying Him.

  421. Do you realize that Christianity

  422. is a religion of joy?

  423. Christianity is a religion

  424. of unlimited pursuit

  425. of the deepest,

  426. most infinitely pleasurable,

  427. exhilarating source of satisfaction

  428. imaginable in all the universe.

  429. Christianity is a religion

  430. of unlimited pursuit of pleasure.

  431. And we believe that there's nothing

  432. more satisfying to your soul

  433. than the God who made it.

  434. And the gloriously good news

  435. is that when you satisfy your heart in God,

  436. you can come and have as much as you want.

  437. This is what David says in Psalm 1611.

  438. In your presence,

  439. there is fullness of joy.

  440. At your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

  441. Do you see the abundance language in this psalm?

  442. Do you hear this?

  443. We're not just fed by God.

  444. We feast on the abundance of His house.

  445. We don't just sip from a faucet.

  446. We drink from the river of God's delights.

  447. We don't just squint by candlelight.

  448. It says,

  449. When your heart is satisfied in God,

  450. in His light we see light.

  451. And so Edwards,

  452. he says,

  453. Persons need not and ought not

  454. set any bounds

  455. to their spiritual and gracious appetites.

  456. He says,

  457. There is no such thing

  458. as any ordinateness

  459. in holy affections.

  460. There is no such thing

  461. as excess in longings

  462. after the discoveries

  463. of the beauty of Christ Jesus

  464. or greater degrees of holiness

  465. or the enjoyment of communion with God.

  466. Men may be as covetous as they please,

  467. if I may so speak,

  468. after spiritual riches.

  469. They may be as eager as they please

  470. to heap up treasure in heaven.

  471. They may be as ambitious as they please

  472. of spiritual and eternal honor and glory.

  473. They may be as voluptuous as they please

  474. with respect to spiritual pleasure.

  475. In other words,

  476. he says,

  477. If you want to be satisfied,

  478. come and get it.

  479. As much as you want.

  480. The table is set.

  481. He says elsewhere,

  482. in a sermon that has shaped my life,

  483. what is glorifying God

  484. but rejoicing in the glory

  485. that He has displayed?

  486. Merely understanding

  487. the perfections of God

  488. cannot be the end of creation.

  489. God is glorified

  490. not only by His glory being seen

  491. but by its being rejoiced in.

  492. When those that see it

  493. delight in it,

  494. God is more glorified

  495. than if they only see it.

  496. Friend,

  497. do you treasure God

  498. as the only

  499. and all satisfying

  500. source of delight

  501. for your soul?

  502. Do you see Him

  503. as the greatest satisfaction

  504. that your soul

  505. could possibly ever have?

  506. Friend,

  507. if you are overwhelmed

  508. by the darkness

  509. of this world,

  510. Christian,

  511. the invitation,

  512. come feast your soul

  513. on the glory of God.

  514. And if you are discouraged

  515. by the sin in your own heart,

  516. Christian,

  517. come drink

  518. from the life-giving stream

  519. of the steadfast love

  520. of God for you in Christ.

  521. And friend,

  522. if you are the wicked man

  523. of verses 1-4

  524. who has lived in rebellion

  525. against this great God,

  526. come all who are thirsty,

  527. He says in Isaiah 55.

  528. Come everyone who thirsts,

  529. come to the waters,

  530. come he who has no money,

  531. come buy and eat,

  532. and you will find life

  533. and satisfaction in Christ.

  534. Come to Christ.

  535. find in Him

  536. full atonement

  537. for the greatest wickedness

  538. and full satisfaction

  539. for the hungry heart.

  540. Because of course,

  541. it is in Christ

  542. and only in Christ

  543. that we see

  544. the full expression

  545. of this psalm

  546. most clearly.

  547. The Gospel of John

  548. most clearly,

  549. probably more clearly

  550. than anywhere else,

  551. sheds light

  552. on the language

  553. of this psalm.

  554. In fact,

  555. I've often wondered

  556. if John was reading

  557. Psalm 36

  558. as he composed

  559. his Gospel.

  560. Because it's there

  561. in the Gospel of John

  562. that Jesus says,

  563. I am the light

  564. of the world.

  565. It is by His light

  566. that we see light.

  567. It is there in John

  568. that Jesus meets

  569. with a Samaritan woman

  570. and invites her,

  571. ask me

  572. and I will give you

  573. living water.

  574. He says there in John,

  575. whoever believes in me

  576. as Scripture has said,

  577. out of His heart

  578. will flow rivers

  579. of living water.

  580. Church,

  581. ultimately,

  582. the steadfast love

  583. of God

  584. is shown towards

  585. His people

  586. in Christ.

  587. And no matter

  588. how dark

  589. the world around us

  590. gets,

  591. we take comfort

  592. to know we are

  593. safe and sheltered

  594. in Christ.

  595. Not only from

  596. the schemes of the enemy,

  597. but even from

  598. the wrath of God

  599. against our own sin.

  600. Why?

  601. Because as ugly

  602. and dark

  603. and wicked

  604. of a picture

  605. of our own sin

  606. as we see

  607. in this song,

  608. Christ Jesus,

  609. the perfect Son of God

  610. became sin for us

  611. so that in Him

  612. we might become

  613. the very righteousness

  614. of God.

  615. Jesus Christ

  616. bore the wrath

  617. of God

  618. against our sin

  619. and as God's

  620. righteous judgment

  621. fell upon Him

  622. in our place,

  623. it says,

  624. darkness covered

  625. the face of the earth.

  626. the very darkness

  627. that David describes

  628. here in verses 1-4

  629. reached its peak

  630. at the cross of Christ

  631. as the light

  632. of the world

  633. was slain.

  634. But we praise God

  635. that the darkness

  636. could not hold Him.

  637. He has risen

  638. from the grave

  639. in victory

  640. over the darkness,

  641. victory over our sin,

  642. victory over the enemy,

  643. and victory over the grave.

  644. Christian,

  645. our comfort

  646. and our confidence

  647. in the face of darkness

  648. is the all-satisfying

  649. glory of Christ.

  650. Because of this,

  651. third and finally,

  652. we are compelled

  653. to express

  654. our desires to Him.

  655. Look there to verses

  656. 10-12

  657. and would you just

  658. notice here

  659. up to this point

  660. David has asked

  661. for nothing.

  662. He's just examined

  663. the wickedness

  664. and he has extolled

  665. the glory of God.

  666. But now in light

  667. of all of this,

  668. David prays verse 10,

  669. continue your steadfast love

  670. to those who know you

  671. and your righteousness

  672. to the upright of heart.

  673. In other words,

  674. God,

  675. would you be who you are

  676. to those who are yours?

  677. Your steadfast love

  678. is so great,

  679. your righteousness

  680. is so precious,

  681. would you just cover

  682. your people with it

  683. and guard them with it

  684. and comfort us

  685. with your steadfast love

  686. and faithfulness?

  687. And also,

  688. would you,

  689. verse 11,

  690. let not the foot

  691. of arrogance

  692. come upon me

  693. nor the hand

  694. of the wicked

  695. drive me away.

  696. There the evildoers

  697. lie fallen,

  698. they are thrust down

  699. unable to rise.

  700. Again,

  701. we're reminded

  702. of the radical distinction

  703. between the righteous

  704. and the wicked.

  705. James Hamilton

  706. summarizes it perfectly.

  707. He says,

  708. the wicked worship sin

  709. with its fleeting pleasure

  710. and lasting regret,

  711. and in the end,

  712. they gain eternal destruction.

  713. The righteous worship God

  714. with His lofty love

  715. and rooted righteousness,

  716. and in the end,

  717. they drink from the fountain

  718. of life

  719. and ever bask

  720. in His light.

  721. Church,

  722. this is the certain end

  723. of all things.

  724. This is the light

  725. at the end of the tunnel.

  726. You remember our question?

  727. Where do we look

  728. when the darkness

  729. is overwhelming?

  730. Here's your answer,

  731. church.

  732. You look

  733. to the light

  734. of the world,

  735. Jesus Christ.

  736. If you are overwhelmed

  737. by evil in our world,

  738. take heart.

  739. Nothing can separate you

  740. from the covenant love

  741. of God

  742. for you in Christ Jesus.

  743. In fact,

  744. He says,

  745. I have overcome

  746. the world.

  747. If you are discouraged

  748. by the battle

  749. with sin

  750. in your own heart,

  751. take heart.

  752. If you are in Christ,

  753. God is faithful.

  754. He will complete

  755. the good work

  756. He began in you.

  757. Indeed,

  758. His own perfect righteousness

  759. is yours

  760. by faith in Christ.

  761. If you are facing

  762. the fierce attacks

  763. and temptations

  764. and accusations

  765. of the enemy,

  766. take heart.

  767. Christ Jesus

  768. also has been tempted

  769. and tried

  770. in every way

  771. as we are,

  772. yet without sin.

  773. He also endured

  774. the darkness

  775. of this world

  776. so that He might

  777. bring us

  778. out of darkness

  779. and into His

  780. marvelous light.

  781. And if you are

  782. longing for real,

  783. lasting satisfaction

  784. for your soul,

  785. church,

  786. remember that

  787. one day soon

  788. and very soon,

  789. Christ Jesus

  790. will return.

  791. And He will

  792. banish the darkness

  793. forever.

  794. And He will be

  795. our everlasting light.

  796. And all His people

  797. will drop to their knees

  798. and drink from the river

  799. of His everlasting delights

  800. throughout all eternity.

  801. But until that day comes,

  802. church,

  803. guess what?

  804. You can begin feasting

  805. on His goodness

  806. right now.

  807. So if you are thirsty

  808. today, friend,

  809. come to the waters.

  810. If you are empty,

  811. friend,

  812. come to the feast.

  813. If you are terrified

  814. of the dark,

  815. would you turn

  816. to the light

  817. of the world

  818. and take refuge

  819. in the shadow

  820. of His wings?

  821. And would you consider Him

  822. and would you treasure Him

  823. in your heart?

  824. Would you express

  825. the desires of your heart

  826. to Him

  827. and entrust

  828. your very life

  829. to Him?

  830. He is faithful

  831. and He is good.

  832. Let's pray.

  833. Father,

  834. would you show us,

  835. God,

  836. that you are

  837. the all-satisfying

  838. source of joy

  839. for which we were made?

  840. God,

  841. would you show us

  842. the fleeting pleasures

  843. and destructive end

  844. of sin

  845. that we might repent

  846. and put our faith

  847. entirely in Christ

  848. and satisfy our soul

  849. in Him?

  850. And we pray,

  851. Lord Jesus,

  852. would you come quickly

  853. and put an end

  854. to the darkness

  855. and usher in the age

  856. of eternal joys

  857. in your presence?

  858. We pray in Jesus' name.

  859. Amen.
