  1. Amen.

  2. And so our text this morning is not going to be Psalm 37.

  3. If you read ahead, that's awesome.

  4. You'll be very prepared for next week.

  5. But this morning, our text is Romans chapter 6, verses 1 through 14.

    Romans 6:1–14

  6. And so please, if you would, take your Bibles.

  7. Let's open them up to Romans chapter 6, verses 1 through 14.

    Romans 6:1–14

  8. And when you found that, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's word this morning.

  9. Paul writes,

  10. Now, if we have died with Christ,

  11. we believe that we will also live with Him.

  12. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again.

  13. Death no longer has dominion over Him.

  14. For the death He died, He died to sin once for all.

  15. But the life He lives, He lives to God.

  16. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

  17. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body to make you obey its passions.

  18. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness,

  19. but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life,

  20. and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.

  21. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law, but under grace.

  22. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  23. Would you pray with me once more?

  24. Father, we have a tremendous gospel to unpack and to understand and to rejoice in this morning.

  25. And so we pray, Father, would that gospel be clear?

  26. And would you empower the preaching of your word by your spirit,

  27. for the good of your people, and for the glory of your name?

  28. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  29. Amen.

  30. Amen.

  31. You may be seated.

  32. Next month, Amanda and I will get to celebrate 14 years of marriage.

  33. That doesn't sound like a lot.

  34. Maybe to some of you, maybe to others of you, it does sound like a lot.

  35. Now, I know for Amanda, that's an incredible achievement.

  36. But 14 years is coming up, and so about this time each year,

  37. I start to think about this incredible gift of marriage.

  38. And I remember the beginning and the walking down the aisle.

  39. I remember the pronouncement of man and wife and the presence of many witnesses.

  40. I remember that weird feeling of having a ring on my finger for the very first time.

  41. And then I remember just kind of getting used to the fact that we are actually married.

  42. It's not just my life anymore.

  43. It's our life.

  44. It's not just my plans.

  45. Now we're bound up together.

  46. It's our plans.

  47. And as I consider all that God has done over 14 years,

  48. I just marvel at the fact that I have this incredible union to celebrate with my wife.

  49. You know, it's no accident that the Apostle Paul tells us in another book, Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  50. that this marriage idea is actually a picture of the gospel.

  51. John Murray says,

  52. John Murray says it like this.

  53. He says,

  54. Union with Christ is the central truth of the whole doctrine of salvation.

  55. It is not simply a step in the application of redemption.

  56. Rather, it underlies every step.

  57. Church, there are few doctrines as beautiful and as vital for us to understand as our union with Christ.

  58. And it's to this union that Paul points us here in Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  59. And it's that union with Christ that the ordinances of baptism and the Lord's Supper so beautifully represent to us.

  60. And so this morning, we're going to examine this idea, this doctrine of our union with Christ.

  61. And we'll look at it together in three stages this morning.

  62. This will be our outline if you're taking notes.

  63. First, think with me about entering the union.

  64. Entering the union.

  65. And Paul takes us back to the beginning of our union with Christ here in verses 1 through 11 as you look at Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  66. He spent the first five chapters of Romans exalting the grace of God in the gospel of Christ.

  67. He delivered first the terribly bad news that all of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  68. He delivered the bad news that all of us are by nature under His wrath.

  69. And so all of us by nature are deserving of hell.

  70. And all of us by nature are enemies of God.

  71. Every last one of us, he says, whether Jew or Greek, rich or poor, Democrat or Republican,

  72. all in all or Mount Pleasant, Clemson or South Carolina,

  73. all of us by nature are under this curse of sin.

  74. That's the bad news, Romans 1 through 5.

  75. But then he gives us the glorious good news, he tells us,

  76. that God has provided the way of salvation for sinners like us

  77. in sending Jesus Christ.

  78. That He has fulfilled the law by His own perfect life.

  79. He has lived the life that we should have lived but failed.

  80. He has died the death that we should have died in our place as a substitute for sinners.

  81. And now He lives and reigns and rules and resurrection power over all the forces of sin and death and the devil.

  82. This is the good news.

  83. God has provided the way of salvation for sinners in His Son, Jesus Christ.

  84. There is a way for sinners like us to be declared righteous in the sight of God.

  85. Simply by putting our faith in Jesus.

  86. That's Romans 1 through 5.

  87. But now by the time we get to chapter 6, Paul, he senses an objection here.

  88. If the gospel is all about magnifying God's grace, and it is.

  89. If the gospel is all about the praise of His glorious grace towards sinners, and it is.

  90. If you cannot earn your salvation by what you do.

  91. If your righteousness matters not at all, and Christ's righteousness is all that matters.

  92. Then here's a question, Paul.

  93. Why does it matter how we live?

  94. Why does it matter what we do?

  95. Why not just keep on sinning?

  96. Because, Paul, if I understand you rightly,

  97. if I just keep on sinning, and then God shows me grace,

  98. and then God gets the glory,

  99. then we all win, right?

  100. Right?

  101. Paul says, by no means.

  102. Why?

  103. Because if you are a Christian,

  104. then you are now united to Christ.

  105. The moment you put your faith in Jesus,

  106. you have now entered into this brand new reality.

  107. You are no longer dead in sin.

  108. Paul says, you are now alive to God in Christ.

  109. To say it another way,

  110. you are no longer alive towards sin and dead towards God.

  111. You are now dead towards sin and alive towards God.

  112. Why?

  113. Because Jesus is dead to sin, and you're in Him.

  114. And Jesus has risen and is now alive towards God,

  115. and you are in Him.

  116. And so now you are dead to sin and alive to God in Christ.

  117. This is what it means to be a Christian.

  118. It means you have now entered into this breathtaking union with King Jesus.

  119. I am sure you realize,

  120. and if you haven't realized this yet,

  121. you will realize it soon enough.

  122. It is a recipe for disaster when a married man keeps on living like he is single.

  123. That will not last.

  124. Not for long.

  125. You have entered into a new reality,

  126. a new union,

  127. a new identity.

  128. You're not single anymore,

  129. so stop acting like it.

  130. Paul says,

  131. neither are you, Christian.

  132. Keep on sinning?

  133. What are you talking about?

  134. You have entered into a new union with Christ.

  135. Stop thinking,

  136. and stop acting,

  137. and stop living like you're still single and dead in your sin.

  138. Spurgeon says it like this.

  139. He says,

  140. you are one with Christ.

  141. The same blood that flows in His veins now flows in yours.

  142. You are part of His body,

  143. of His flesh,

  144. and of His bones.

  145. Here's what this means, church.

  146. God has performed a miracle in you, Christian.

  147. He has taken what was dead

  148. and has now made it alive.

  149. He has taken what was His enemy

  150. and has now adopted you into His own family

  151. as His own son or His own daughter.

  152. He's taken what was separated from Him

  153. and under His wrath

  154. and now has united you to Himself

  155. and placed you under infinite grace and blessing in Christ.

  156. And that brand new reality, Paul says,

  157. is pictured in baptism.

  158. Now, I want you to notice just a few things here

  159. that Paul shows us about this ordinance,

  160. this sign of baptism.

  161. For one, notice here,

  162. baptism pictures our union with Christ.

  163. Baptism portrays visibly our union with Christ.

  164. This is what he says in verse 3.

  165. Do you not know

  166. that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus

  167. were baptized into His death?

  168. We were therefore buried with Him

  169. by baptism into death

  170. in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead

  171. by the glory of the Father,

  172. we too might walk in newness of life.

  173. And the question is,

  174. well, Paul,

  175. what kind of baptism are you talking about here?

  176. Are you talking about water baptism

  177. like what we're about to do out here?

  178. Or are you talking about spirit baptism,

  179. meaning conversion?

  180. And the answer is both.

  181. Not because that water baptism saves you,

  182. it doesn't,

  183. but because that water baptism

  184. is almost shorthand

  185. for the entire reality of salvation.

  186. Your baptism, water baptism,

  187. is like the wedding ring on my finger.

  188. This ring does not make me married.

  189. A single man can go buy a wedding ring

  190. and slip it onto his finger.

  191. That does not make him married.

  192. But this ring on my finger

  193. is shorthand for the entire message of marriage.

  194. It is shorthand for all the glorious benefits

  195. of this union with my spouse.

  196. And so you can say things like,

  197. put a ring on it.

  198. Beyonce, if you like it,

  199. you should have put a ring on it.

  200. And we know what you mean.

  201. You're not just talking about the ring, are you?

  202. Right?

  203. You're talking about

  204. all the glorious benefits of marriage.

  205. Paul uses baptism in the same way.

  206. Baptism is a visible sign,

  207. shorthand,

  208. for a believer's union with Christ.

  209. You are buried with Him.

  210. You are raised with Him.

  211. The old is gone.

  212. The new has come.

  213. It visibly represents

  214. what God has done

  215. in the heart of a believer.

  216. Which is why, notice,

  217. this is why baptism is for believers only.

  218. Baptism is not an engagement ring.

  219. It is a wedding ring.

  220. Baptism is not a symbol of promises made

  221. that may or may not come true in time.

  222. That have not yet come to pass.

  223. Baptism is a symbol of promises realized.

  224. This is where we take a different path

  225. from our Presbyterian friends

  226. who we love very much

  227. and appreciate deeply.

  228. But just think about Paul's argument here

  229. in Romans 6 with me.

  230. In what sense could any of this be said

  231. of a non-believer

  232. or an infant?

  233. An infant has not yet died to sin.

  234. They have not yet received

  235. new resurrection life.

  236. They are not yet freed from sin's power.

  237. Not until by God's grace

  238. they put their faith in Jesus

  239. and are actually united to Him.

  240. And then,

  241. in obedience to Christ's command,

  242. then,

  243. we symbolize that union with Christ

  244. in the waters of baptism.

  245. In the Great Commission,

  246. what does it say?

  247. Jesus commands all His disciples,

  248. go and make disciples of all nations,

  249. baptizing them,

  250. the disciples,

  251. those who hear the Gospel

  252. and respond in faith.

  253. And so,

  254. when we baptize someone,

  255. as we're preparing to do today,

  256. we're not saying,

  257. gee,

  258. I hope that God saves you.

  259. we are saying,

  260. we believe that He has.

  261. And we believe that

  262. you are united to Christ by faith.

  263. We believe that

  264. you have been buried with Him

  265. and now you have been raised with Him.

  266. And so,

  267. we're going to represent that visibly

  268. through the waters of baptism.

  269. And notice here,

  270. final point before we move on.

  271. You notice I say we.

  272. We.

  273. We are doing this.

  274. Who is the we?

  275. One more key here.

  276. Notice that He instinctively connects

  277. baptism with the local church.

  278. Remember who He's talking to here

  279. in this book of Romans?

  280. He is not just talking to

  281. disconnected,

  282. isolated,

  283. lone ranger Christian

  284. who happens to be passing through Rome

  285. at the time.

  286. Who is He talking to?

  287. He is talking to

  288. an organized,

  289. recognizable,

  290. local church

  291. of Jesus Christ.

  292. One that has elders

  293. and deacons

  294. and members

  295. and they know

  296. who is the church

  297. and who is just passing through.

  298. Why?

  299. Because the normal assumption

  300. of the New Testament

  301. is that

  302. if you have been united

  303. to Christ,

  304. then you will have

  305. that vertical union

  306. recognized

  307. and affirmed

  308. horizontally

  309. by Christ's people,

  310. the church.

  311. This is what we,

  312. together,

  313. church,

  314. do in baptism.

  315. In baptism,

  316. the individual says,

  317. I'm a Christian

  318. and the church says,

  319. yes you are,

  320. we agree.

  321. We affirm that.

  322. The individual says,

  323. I want to walk with Jesus

  324. and the church

  325. collectively says,

  326. yes,

  327. we're going to do that with you.

  328. We're going to link arms with you.

  329. We're going to do that together.

  330. To be baptized

  331. is to say,

  332. I am a part of the body

  333. and then for the body

  334. to say,

  335. yes you are,

  336. you're a part of us.

  337. And again,

  338. church,

  339. I am so excited this morning

  340. that we get to hear

  341. the testimonies

  342. from Carl

  343. and then from Savannah

  344. and then we go outside

  345. and we get to symbolize

  346. their entrance

  347. into this union

  348. with Jesus

  349. but then we don't just

  350. send them off

  351. to go figure it out

  352. on their own.

  353. At the very same time,

  354. we get to welcome them

  355. formally,

  356. officially

  357. into membership

  358. of this local body

  359. of Christ.

  360. What a gift that is.

  361. Baptism,

  362. like a wedding ceremony

  363. is the one time

  364. initial pronouncement

  365. of your union

  366. with Christ

  367. in the presence

  368. of many witnesses.

  369. But of course,

  370. we also need

  371. regular reminders

  372. of this union.

  373. So the second stage here

  374. that we'll consider,

  375. second,

  376. Paul says,

  377. consider the union.

  378. Second is,

  379. considering the union.

  380. And it's just amazing to me

  381. how Paul does this.

  382. And this is,

  383. this is the hardest part

  384. of preaching.

  385. He lays out

  386. all of this

  387. glorious,

  388. big picture,

  389. gospel truth

  390. of our union

  391. with Christ.

  392. He gives the church

  393. in Rome

  394. all of the gospel doctrine

  395. that they could possibly handle.

  396. And then,

  397. he gives these specific,

  398. clear to the point,

  399. practical commands.

  400. These aren't just ideas.

  401. These ideas are meant

  402. to shape our lives.

  403. Right doctrine

  404. ought to produce

  405. right living.

  406. And so he says,

  407. by way of inference,

  408. remember the objection,

  409. don't keep on sinning

  410. that grace may abound.

  411. Christian,

  412. live as you are

  413. in Christ.

  414. Consider this union

  415. with Him.

  416. And he gives us

  417. a couple of images

  418. to help us

  419. understand what that means.

  420. The first image here

  421. is,

  422. it's death to life.

  423. He says,

  424. we have been baptized,

  425. buried with Him

  426. in baptism,

  427. raised to walk

  428. in newness of life.

  429. That's a command.

  430. He says,

  431. walk as someone

  432. who has been raised

  433. to new life.

  434. And so the first image here

  435. is death to life.

  436. He gives us a second here

  437. in verses 5 through 11.

  438. And here,

  439. the image is

  440. slavery to freedom.

  441. Look there at verse 5.

  442. He says,

  443. for if we have been

  444. united with Him

  445. in a death like His,

  446. we shall certainly

  447. be united with Him

  448. in a resurrection like His.

  449. We know that our old self

  450. was crucified with Him

  451. in order that the body

  452. of sin might be brought

  453. to nothing

  454. so that we would

  455. no longer be enslaved

  456. to sin.

  457. For one who has died

  458. has been set free

  459. from sin.

  460. See,

  461. the bad news is

  462. you were dead.

  463. The good news is

  464. Christ has died

  465. in your place.

  466. And you've died in Him.

  467. The bad news is

  468. you were enslaved to sin.

  469. But the good news is

  470. Christ has now shattered

  471. those chains of sin

  472. for all who are united

  473. to Him by faith.

  474. If you are in Christ

  475. by faith,

  476. if you are united

  477. to Him,

  478. Christian,

  479. you are free

  480. from slavery to sin.

  481. This is almost unbelievable,

  482. isn't it?

  483. Do you understand

  484. non-believer

  485. that you are not free?

  486. That you are

  487. enslaved

  488. to the powers of sin?

  489. And do you understand,

  490. believer,

  491. Christian,

  492. that you are now

  493. free

  494. from the power of sin?

  495. Yes,

  496. of course,

  497. you will still wrestle

  498. with the presence of sin

  499. in and around you.

  500. You will wrestle

  501. with indwelling sin

  502. in you.

  503. All of us do.

  504. You will feel the pain

  505. that sin causes

  506. and brings against you

  507. in your life.

  508. We all do.

  509. But the difference now

  510. is you are no longer

  511. enslaved

  512. to the power

  513. of sin

  514. over you.

  515. The presence

  516. and the pain

  517. and the persistence

  518. of sin

  519. are all there,

  520. but His power

  521. over you

  522. is no more.

  523. You are,

  524. as He says

  525. in 2 Corinthians 5.17,

  526. you are a new creation

  527. in Christ.

  528. The old is gone,

  529. behold,

  530. the new has come.

  531. Christ is alive,

  532. you are alive

  533. in Him.

  534. Christ is victorious

  535. over sin,

  536. you are victorious

  537. over sin

  538. in Him.

  539. This is what He says

  540. in verse 8.

  541. If we have died

  542. with Christ,

  543. we believe

  544. we also will live

  545. with Him.

  546. And we know

  547. that Christ,

  548. being raised from the dead,

  549. will never die again.

  550. Death no longer

  551. has dominion over Him.

  552. For the death

  553. He died to sin

  554. once for all,

  555. but the life He lives,

  556. He lives to God.

  557. Friend,

  558. this is what it means

  559. to be united

  560. to Jesus.

  561. When you get married,

  562. it's no longer

  563. just your wife's problems.

  564. Guess what?

  565. Now they're your problems too.

  566. Amen!

  567. It's no longer

  568. just your debt.

  569. Now this is our debt.

  570. This is our balance sheet

  571. together.

  572. There's this blending

  573. of lives

  574. that happens

  575. in a healthy marriage.

  576. Paul says

  577. this is exactly

  578. what happens

  579. when you're united

  580. with Christ

  581. by faith.

  582. His death,

  583. guess what?

  584. That's yours.

  585. His life,

  586. guess what?

  587. That's yours.

  588. His freedom,

  589. guess what?

  590. That's yours,

  591. Christian.

  592. His victory

  593. over sin,

  594. guess what?

  595. It is yours.

  596. apart from Him

  597. before you were

  598. united to Him,

  599. you were a slave

  600. to sin,

  601. but now,

  602. praise God,

  603. sin has no more power

  604. over you,

  605. Christian,

  606. than it does

  607. over Christ,

  608. Jesus Himself.

  609. So Christian,

  610. live as you are

  611. in Christ.

  612. Christ.

  613. This is what Paul

  614. calls us to.

  615. Our problem

  616. is that we're so quick

  617. to forget this

  618. reality-shaping union

  619. with King Jesus.

  620. And we're just saying,

  621. didn't we,

  622. prone to wonder,

  623. Lord,

  624. I feel it,

  625. prone to leave

  626. the God I love.

  627. So what do we need

  628. to do,

  629. church?

  630. Paul commands us

  631. in verse 11.

  632. So you also

  633. must consider yourselves

  634. dead to sin

  635. and alive to God

  636. in Christ Jesus.

  637. Jesus.

  638. Consider yourself

  639. dead

  640. and consider yourself

  641. alive.

  642. Consider the union

  643. and consider

  644. what it means.

  645. Consider yourself,

  646. reckon yourself

  647. to be who you are

  648. in Christ.

  649. Consider yourself

  650. to be dead to sin.

  651. Consider yourself

  652. to be alive in Christ.

  653. Consider yourself

  654. to be free

  655. from sin's enslavement

  656. and consider yourself

  657. to be victorious

  658. over it in Christ.

  659. And this isn't just

  660. think about it,

  661. although that's part of it.

  662. This is,

  663. let this truth

  664. shape your very identity.

  665. Drop your maiden name.

  666. Wear your ring proudly.

  667. Consider yourself

  668. united to King Jesus.

  669. Stop living as a slave.

  670. Start living as a free man

  671. in Christ.

  672. A free woman

  673. in Christ.

  674. Christian,

  675. do you understand

  676. if you're in Christ

  677. by faith,

  678. this is objectively

  679. true of you.

  680. It means you are now

  681. spirit indwelt,

  682. reborn,

  683. made new,

  684. set free.

  685. This is good news.

  686. Paul says,

  687. let this gospel

  688. shape your very identity.

  689. Would you consider yourself

  690. dead to sin

  691. and alive to God

  692. in Christ?

  693. In church,

  694. there is more application

  695. here than we have time

  696. in the week

  697. to apply to us,

  698. but we'll give you a few.

  699. Consider yourself

  700. dead to sin

  701. and alive to God.

  702. How?

  703. By saturating your mind

  704. with God's word,

  705. not with the world.

  706. Do not be conformed

  707. to the patterns

  708. of this world,

  709. he tells us

  710. in chapter 12,

  711. but be transformed

  712. by the renewal

  713. of your mind.

  714. How?

  715. Saturate your mind

  716. with God's word

  717. in Holy Scripture.

  718. Consider yourself

  719. dead to sin

  720. and alive to God.

  721. How?

  722. By praying

  723. without ceasing

  724. and enjoying

  725. this union

  726. with your God.

  727. Abide in me,

  728. he says.

  729. He invites you,

  730. Christian.

  731. Come to him.

  732. Speak to him.

  733. Bear your soul to him.

  734. You'll be heard

  735. and received in Christ.

  736. Consider yourself

  737. dead to sin

  738. by killing

  739. any lingering sin

  740. in your heart.

  741. Put off the old man

  742. and put on the new man

  743. in Christ.

  744. Be killing sin

  745. or sin will be killing you,

  746. John Owen tells us.

  747. Consider yourself

  748. alive to God

  749. by seeking to satisfy

  750. your heart in him,

  751. by treasuring him

  752. above all else,

  753. by feasting

  754. on the abundance

  755. of his steadfast love.

  756. for you in Christ,

  757. by fixing your mind's eye

  758. on his return

  759. and the promise

  760. of eternal joy

  761. with him

  762. in that time,

  763. in that day

  764. when sin's presence,

  765. sin's pain,

  766. sin's persistence

  767. and sin's power

  768. are gone.

  769. Consider yourself

  770. dead to sin

  771. and alive to God

  772. by joining yourself

  773. meaningfully

  774. with your local church

  775. community

  776. in pursuit of Christ

  777. together.

  778. but you know

  779. one way

  780. that we

  781. consider

  782. this glorious

  783. union together

  784. as a church?

  785. We consider

  786. ourselves

  787. dead to sin

  788. and alive

  789. to God

  790. by partaking

  791. of communion

  792. together.

  793. Have you ever

  794. thought about it

  795. this way?

  796. What is communion?

  797. Communion

  798. is a

  799. visible,

  800. tangible

  801. reminder

  802. of the gospel

  803. of Christ.

  804. It shows us

  805. visibly before our eyes.

  806. We hold it

  807. in our very hands

  808. what Christ has done

  809. in shedding

  810. his blood

  811. and breaking

  812. of his flesh.

  813. And it's a sign

  814. of our unity

  815. both to Christ

  816. vertically

  817. and also

  818. horizontally

  819. to Christ's people.

  820. Paul says

  821. in 1 Corinthians 10

  822. because there is

  823. one bread

  824. we who are many

  825. are one body

  826. for we all

  827. partake of the

  828. one bread.

  829. Church this is

  830. a family meal

  831. for those

  832. who have been

  833. united to Christ

  834. and to one

  835. another.

  836. Baptism

  837. is the one

  838. time entrance

  839. and communion

  840. is the ongoing

  841. reminder

  842. of our union

  843. with Christ.

  844. Baptism

  845. is putting

  846. on the

  847. team jersey

  848. and communion

  849. is the regular

  850. team practice.

  851. Baptism

  852. is the wedding

  853. ceremony

  854. and communion

  855. is the anniversary

  856. getaway

  857. or the weekend

  858. date night.

  859. It is a

  860. regular

  861. ongoing

  862. reminder

  863. of our union

  864. with Christ

  865. and our unity

  866. together

  867. as a body

  868. which is why

  869. again

  870. these two signs

  871. are so

  872. interconnected.

  873. Baptism

  874. looks back

  875. at the beginning

  876. of our union

  877. but communion

  878. feeds us

  879. along the way.

  880. It's a family

  881. meal

  882. where every

  883. baptized believer

  884. gets to come

  885. and remember

  886. and feast

  887. on what God

  888. has done

  889. for us

  890. in Christ.

  891. Christian

  892. when you

  893. come to

  894. the table

  895. you feed

  896. on Christ

  897. by faith

  898. and you

  899. remember

  900. you remember

  901. his body

  902. broken for you

  903. and his

  904. blood shed

  905. for you

  906. the blood

  907. of the new

  908. covenant

  909. shed for the

  910. forgiveness

  911. of your sins

  912. you eat

  913. and you

  914. drink

  915. in faith

  916. and you

  917. consider

  918. yourself

  919. in him

  920. dead

  921. to sin

  922. and alive

  923. to God

  924. and again

  925. what a gift

  926. church

  927. and we get

  928. to celebrate

  929. this together

  930. this morning

  931. if you're a

  932. baptized believer

  933. you're welcome

  934. to come

  935. and remember

  936. what God

  937. has done

  938. in bringing

  939. you from

  940. death to life

  941. and freeing

  942. you from

  943. slavery to

  944. sin

  945. would you

  946. come

  947. this morning

  948. and consider

  949. yourself

  950. dead to

  951. sin

  952. and alive

  953. to God

  954. in Christ

  955. praise God

  956. but then

  957. church

  958. we see

  959. third

  960. Paul directs

  961. us

  962. to living

  963. in the

  964. union

  965. living

  966. in the

  967. union

  968. the big

  969. moment

  970. of the

  971. wedding

  972. ceremony

  973. and the

  974. honeymoon

  975. is over

  976. and then

  977. what happens

  978. you come

  979. back home

  980. and what

  981. then

  982. the

  983. anniversary

  984. celebration

  985. is great

  986. you get

  987. to reflect

  988. on your

  989. love for

  990. one another

  991. express

  992. your love

  993. to one

  994. another

  995. but what's

  996. next

  997. what's

  998. after that

  999. what's

  1000. next

  1001. is daily

  1002. faithfulness

  1003. daily

  1004. enjoyment

  1005. of living

  1006. faithfully

  1007. in the

  1008. union

  1009. God

  1010. has given

  1011. you

  1012. and this

  1013. is what

  1014. Paul shows

  1015. us in

  1016. verses 12

  1017. through 14

  1018. now we're

  1019. about to

  1020. go and

  1021. eat and

  1022. drink

  1023. symbolically

  1024. the body

  1025. and the

  1026. blood of

  1027. Christ

  1028. we're about

  1029. to go

  1030. and feast

  1031. on the

  1032. promises

  1033. of the

  1034. gospel

  1035. by faith

  1036. but then

  1037. we're

  1038. going to

  1039. leave

  1040. and we're

  1041. going to

  1042. start a

  1043. new week

  1044. we're

  1045. going to

  1046. go

  1047. baptize

  1048. Carl

  1049. and Savannah

  1050. but then

  1051. they're

  1052. going to

  1053. dry off

  1054. and they're

  1055. going to

  1056. change their

  1057. clothes

  1058. they're going

  1059. to drive

  1060. back home

  1061. and then

  1062. normal life

  1063. starts again

  1064. Monday is

  1065. right around

  1066. the corner

  1067. what does

  1068. all of this

  1069. mean when you

  1070. get up and

  1071. go to work

  1072. tomorrow

  1073. everything has

  1074. changed but at

  1075. the same time

  1076. it all just

  1077. looks the

  1078. same

  1079. what does

  1080. it look

  1081. like

  1082. to live

  1083. every day

  1084. in this

  1085. union

  1086. with Christ

  1087. Paul tells

  1088. us in

  1089. verse 12

  1090. let not

  1091. sin

  1092. therefore

  1093. reign

  1094. in your

  1095. mortal body

  1096. to make

  1097. you obey

  1098. its passions

  1099. let not

  1100. sin

  1101. therefore

  1102. reign

  1103. in your

  1104. mortal body

  1105. to make

  1106. you obey

  1107. its passions

  1108. what does it

  1109. look like

  1110. tomorrow

  1111. church

  1112. it looks

  1113. like

  1114. war

  1115. Paul says

  1116. refuse it

  1117. do not

  1118. let it

  1119. reign

  1120. it wants

  1121. to

  1122. there is

  1123. now and

  1124. will be

  1125. until the

  1126. day you

  1127. die or

  1128. Christ

  1129. returns

  1130. a battle

  1131. for your

  1132. heart

  1133. a battle

  1134. for the

  1135. throne

  1136. sin has

  1137. been

  1138. effectively

  1139. dethroned

  1140. but it

  1141. constantly

  1142. is trying

  1143. to sneak

  1144. its way

  1145. back

  1146. on

  1147. Paul says

  1148. don't

  1149. let it

  1150. reign

  1151. Christian

  1152. don't

  1153. let it

  1154. make you

  1155. obey

  1156. its

  1157. passions

  1158. Christian

  1159. don't

  1160. go eat

  1161. this bread

  1162. and drink

  1163. this cup

  1164. and go

  1165. into the

  1166. water

  1167. and come

  1168. up out

  1169. of the

  1170. water

  1171. and then

  1172. go out

  1173. of here

  1174. and live

  1175. like you're

  1176. still enslaved

  1177. to sin

  1178. don't

  1179. present your

  1180. members

  1181. he says

  1182. in verse

  1183. 13

  1184. to sin

  1185. as instruments

  1186. for unrighteousness

  1187. but present

  1188. yourselves to

  1189. God as

  1190. those who

  1191. have been

  1192. brought from

  1193. death to

  1194. life

  1195. and your

  1196. members to

  1197. God as

  1198. instruments

  1199. for righteousness

  1200. for sin

  1201. will have

  1202. no dominion

  1203. over you

  1204. since you

  1205. are not

  1206. under law

  1207. but under

  1208. grace

  1209. here we go

  1210. back to this

  1211. grace again

  1212. this grace

  1213. remember the

  1214. keep on

  1215. sinning

  1216. objection

  1217. Paul says

  1218. this grace

  1219. being under

  1220. grace

  1221. if you truly

  1222. understand it

  1223. it should not

  1224. lead you to

  1225. give yourself

  1226. over to sin

  1227. but rather to

  1228. freely

  1229. and fully

  1230. give yourself

  1231. to God

  1232. and there is

  1233. no in between

  1234. how do I live

  1235. in this union

  1236. with Christ

  1237. what does it

  1238. look like

  1239. it looks like

  1240. love the Lord

  1241. your God

  1242. with all

  1243. your heart

  1244. and all

  1245. your soul

  1246. and all

  1247. your mind

  1248. and all

  1249. your strength

  1250. and love

  1251. your neighbor

  1252. as yourself

  1253. as Jesus

  1254. did

  1255. it looks like

  1256. all the

  1257. members of

  1258. your body

  1259. your mind

  1260. your eyes

  1261. your ears

  1262. your mouth

  1263. your hands

  1264. and your feet

  1265. your heart

  1266. and your soul

  1267. all of it

  1268. has now been

  1269. set free

  1270. from sin

  1271. and made

  1272. alive by the

  1273. spirit

  1274. so Paul

  1275. says don't

  1276. offer any

  1277. of them up

  1278. as instruments

  1279. to sin

  1280. rather give

  1281. yourself

  1282. wholly

  1283. to God

  1284. this

  1285. is the

  1286. daily

  1287. life

  1288. in union

  1289. with Christ

  1290. as you abide

  1291. in him

  1292. and bear much

  1293. fruit each

  1294. and every day

  1295. you're asking

  1296. God

  1297. God how can I

  1298. use my lips

  1299. to glorify you

  1300. today

  1301. God how can I

  1302. let what comes

  1303. into my ears

  1304. be honoring

  1305. to you today

  1306. God would you

  1307. guide my thoughts

  1308. and lead them

  1309. to be honoring

  1310. to you today

  1311. I don't want

  1312. to set my mind

  1313. on anything

  1314. that's false

  1315. I want to set

  1316. my mind

  1317. above where

  1318. Christ is

  1319. seated at the

  1320. right hand

  1321. of God

  1322. God would you

  1323. allow me to

  1324. set my hands

  1325. and my feet

  1326. today in ways

  1327. that are honoring

  1328. and pleasing

  1329. to you

  1330. not to tear

  1331. down but to

  1332. build up

  1333. God would you

  1334. would you allow

  1335. me to treasure

  1336. you above all

  1337. else in my

  1338. heart today

  1339. would you remove

  1340. any false joy

  1341. any false

  1342. treasure

  1343. any false

  1344. delight far

  1345. from me

  1346. and satisfy

  1347. my heart

  1348. this morning

  1349. in your

  1350. unfailing love

  1351. God would you

  1352. do that

  1353. this is what

  1354. it looks like

  1355. to live

  1356. daily in your

  1357. union with

  1358. Christ

  1359. the ordinances

  1360. of baptism

  1361. and the

  1362. Lord's Supper

  1363. church

  1364. they are

  1365. beautiful

  1366. pictures

  1367. of our

  1368. union

  1369. with Christ

  1370. but I want

  1371. to make it

  1372. clear to you

  1373. as we close

  1374. they are not

  1375. just empty

  1376. religious

  1377. rituals

  1378. they both

  1379. demonstrate

  1380. and demand

  1381. new life

  1382. in Christ

  1383. do not

  1384. partake

  1385. of these

  1386. elements

  1387. if you have

  1388. no intention

  1389. of living out

  1390. what they

  1391. represent

  1392. if you have

  1393. been baptized

  1394. and if you

  1395. take communion

  1396. what you're

  1397. saying

  1398. church

  1399. is I

  1400. am in

  1401. Christ

  1402. sin has

  1403. no dominion

  1404. over me

  1405. how can

  1406. we who

  1407. have died

  1408. to sin

  1409. still live

  1410. in it

  1411. Paul gives

  1412. this exact

  1413. warning

  1414. clearly in

  1415. Romans

  1416. in 1st

  1417. Corinthians

  1418. chapter 10

  1419. he warns

  1420. the Corinthians

  1421. that simply

  1422. partaking

  1423. of these

  1424. signs

  1425. apart from

  1426. genuine

  1427. faith

  1428. and genuine

  1429. repentance

  1430. it means

  1431. absolutely

  1432. nothing

  1433. for you

  1434. in fact

  1435. it may

  1436. be

  1437. it may

  1438. mean

  1439. trouble

  1440. for you

  1441. listen to

  1442. this warning

  1443. from 1st

  1444. Corinthians

  1445. 10

  1446. he says

  1447. for I do

  1448. not want

  1449. you to be

  1450. unaware

  1451. brothers

  1452. that our

  1453. fathers

  1454. were all

  1455. under the

  1456. cloud

  1457. and all

  1458. passed

  1459. through the

  1460. sea

  1461. all were

  1462. baptized

  1463. into

  1464. Moses

  1465. in the

  1466. cloud

  1467. and in

  1468. the

  1469. sea

  1470. do you

  1471. hear

  1472. there

  1473. a

  1474. picture

  1475. of

  1476. baptism

  1477. all

  1478. of them

  1479. were

  1480. baptized

  1481. as it

  1482. were

  1483. rescued

  1484. out of

  1485. slavery

  1486. in

  1487. Egypt

  1488. brought

  1489. into

  1490. freedom

  1491. through

  1492. the

  1493. waters

  1494. of

  1495. the

  1496. red

  1497. sea

  1498. do you

  1499. see

  1500. an

  1501. image

  1502. of

  1503. baptism

  1504. he

  1505. goes

  1506. on

  1507. and all

  1508. ate

  1509. the

  1510. same

  1511. spiritual

  1512. food

  1513. and all

  1514. drank

  1515. the

  1516. same

  1517. spiritual

  1518. drink

  1519. for

  1520. they

  1521. drank

  1522. from

  1523. the

  1524. spiritual

  1525. rock

  1526. that

  1527. followed

  1528. them

  1529. and the

  1530. rock

  1531. was

  1532. Christ

  1533. there's

  1534. a

  1535. sermon

  1536. for

  1537. another

  1538. day

  1539. do you

  1540. hear

  1541. there

  1542. a

  1543. picture

  1544. of

  1545. communion

  1546. this

  1547. redeemed

  1548. !

  1549. community

  1550. who

  1551. all

  1552. of

  1553. them

  1554. brought

  1555. out of

  1556. slavery

  1557. all

  1558. of

  1559. them

  1560. baptized

  1561. as it

  1562. were

  1563. through

  1564. the

  1565. waters

  1566. all

  1567. of

  1568. them

  1569. now

  1570. called

  1571. to be

  1572. God's

  1573. people

  1574. God

  1575. sustained

  1576. them

  1577. with

  1578. this

  1579. spiritual

  1580. food

  1581. on

  1582. their

  1583. way

  1584. to

  1585. the

  1586. promised

  1587. land

  1588. does that

  1589. sound

  1590. like

  1591. us?

  1592. He

  1593. reminded

  1594. them

  1595. constantly

  1596. of

  1597. his

  1598. care

  1599. and

  1600. his

  1601. provision

  1602. for

  1603. them

  1604. he

  1605. reminded

  1606. them

  1607. constantly

  1608. of

  1609. his

  1610. faithfulness

  1611. to

  1612. them

  1613. that

  1614. they

  1615. were

  1616. his

  1617. people

  1618. and

  1619. he

  1620. was

  1621. his

  1622. God

  1623. and

  1624. yet

  1625. he

  1626. goes

  1627. on

  1628. nevertheless

  1629. with

  1630. most

  1631. of

  1632. them

  1633. God

  1634. was

  1635. not

  1636. pleased

  1637. for

  1638. they

  1639. were

  1640. overthrown

  1641. in

  1642. the

  1643. wilderness

  1644. here's

  1645. the

  1646. point

  1647. these

  1648. ordinances

  1649. are

  1650. incredible

  1651. signs of

  1652. God's

  1653. gift of

  1654. grace

  1655. in the

  1656. gospel

  1657. of

  1658. Christ

  1659. they

  1660. are

  1661. visible

  1662. and

  1663. tangible

  1664. expressions

  1665. of our

  1666. union

  1667. with

  1668. Jesus

  1669. but

  1670. again

  1671. church

  1672. apart

  1673. from

  1674. real

  1675. repentance

  1676. and

  1677. apart

  1678. from

  1679. real

  1680. faith

  1681. they

  1682. are

  1683. empty

  1684. so

  1685. Paul

  1686. says

  1687. these

  1688. things

  1689. took

  1690. place

  1691. as

  1692. examples

  1693. for

  1694. us

  1695. that

  1696. we

  1697. might

  1698. not

  1699. desire

  1700. evil

  1701. as

  1702. they

  1703. did

  1704. do

  1705. not

  1706. be

  1707. idolaters

  1708. as

  1709. some

  1710. of

  1711. them

  1712. were

  1713. as

  1714. it

  1715. is

  1716. written

  1717. the

  1718. people

  1719. sat

  1720. down

  1721. to

  1722. eat

  1723. and

  1724. drink

  1725. and

  1726. rose

  1727. up

  1728. to

  1729. play

  1730. so

  1731. we

  1732. must

  1733. not

  1734. indulge

  1735. in

  1736. sexual

  1737. immorality

  1738. as

  1739. some

  1740. of

  1741. them

  1742. did

  1743. and

  1744. 23,000

  1745. fell

  1746. in a

  1747. single

  1748. day

  1749. we

  1750. must

  1751. not

  1752. put

  1753. Christ

  1754. to

  1755. the

  1756. test

  1757. as

  1758. some

  1759. of

  1760. them

  1761. did

  1762. and

  1763. were

  1764. destroyed

  1765. by

  1766. serpents

  1767. nor

  1768. grumble

  1769. as

  1770. some

  1771. of

  1772. them

  1773. did

  1774. and

  1775. were

  1776. destroyed

  1777. by

  1778. the

  1779. destroyer

  1780. now

  1781. these

  1782. things

  1783. happened

  1784. to

  1785. them

  1786. as

  1787. an

  1788. example

  1789. but

  1790. they

  1791. were

  1792. written

  1793. down

  1794. for

  1795. our

  1796. instruction

  1797. on

  1798. whom

  1799. the

  1800. end

  1801. of

  1802. the

  1803. ages

  1804. has

  1805. come

  1806. church

  1807. they

  1808. are

  1809. written

  1810. down

  1811. for

  1812. us

  1813. for

  1814. us

  1815. as we

  1816. come

  1817. to

  1818. the

  1819. table

  1820. for

  1821. us

  1822. as we

  1823. go

  1824. down

  1825. into

  1826. the

  1827. waters

  1828. of

  1829. baptism

  1830. for

  1831. us

  1832. as we

  1833. reflect

  1834. on

  1835. our

  1836. precious

  1837. union

  1838. with

  1839. Jesus

  1840. Christ

  1841. friend

  1842. have

  1843. you

  1844. been

  1845. united

  1846. to

  1847. Christ

  1848. by

  1849. faith

  1850. have

  1851. you

  1852. been

  1853. united

  1854. with

  1855. him

  1856. in

  1857. his

  1858. death

  1859. to

  1860. sin

  1861. and

  1862. his

  1863. life

  1864. to

  1865. God

  1866. do

  1867. you

  1868. live

  1869. now

  1870. in

  1871. resurrection

  1872. victory

  1873. over

  1874. sin

  1875. have

  1876. you

  1877. entered

  1878. into

  1879. that

  1880. union

  1881. if

  1882. not

  1883. then

  1884. friend

  1885. what

  1886. would

  1887. keep

  1888. you

  1889. from

  1890. coming

  1891. to

  1892. Christ

  1893. this

  1894. very

  1895. morning

  1896. and

  1897. calling

  1898. out

  1899. to

  1900. him

  1901. in

  1902. faith

  1903. and

  1904. if

  1905. so

  1906. Christian

  1907. consider

  1908. yourself

  1909. dead

  1910. to

  1911. sin

  1912. and

  1913. alive

  1914. to

  1915. God

  1916. in

  1917. Christ

  1918. live

  1919. in

  1920. the

  1921. union

  1922. God

  1923. has

  1924. purchased

  1925. for

  1926. you

  1927. in

  1928. the

  1929. gospel

  1930. of

  1931. Christ

  1932. let's

  1933. pray

  1934. father

  1935. God

  1936. we

  1937. praise

  1938. you

  1939. for

  1940. this

  1941. unfathomable

  1942. grace

  1943. that you've

  1944. given

  1945. us

  1946. in

  1947. Christ

  1948. that

  1949. all

  1950. who

  1951. come

  1952. to

  1953. King

  1954. Jesus

  1955. by

  1956. faith

  1957. you

  1958. have

  1959. removed

  1960. our

  1961. sins

  1962. from

  1963. us

  1964. as far

  1965. as

  1966. the

  1967. east

  1968. is

  1969. from

  1970. the

  1971. west

  1972. you

  1973. have

  1974. made

  1975. us

  1976. new

  1977. in

  1978. Christ

  1979. you've

  1980. given

  1981. us

  1982. a very

  1983. new

  1984. identity

  1985. Lord

  1986. we're

  1987. no

  1988. longer

  1989. dead

  1990. we're

  1991. alive

  1992. we're

  1993. no

  1994. longer

  1995. slaves

  1996. we're

  1997. free

  1998. we pray

  1999. father

  2000. that we

  2001. would

  2002. live

  2003. in

  2004. this

  2005. union

  2006. that

  2007. you've

  2008. given

  2009. us

  2010. in

  2011. Christ

  2012. we

  2013. praise

  2014. you

  2015. now

  2016. that

  2017. we

  2018. get

  2019. to

  2020. see

  2021. it

  2022. represented

  2023. in

  2024. the

  2025. waters

  2026. of

  2027. baptism

  2028. and

  2029. in

  2030. the

  2031. Lord's

  2032. supper

  2033. would

  2034. you

  2035. feed

  2036. us

  2037. by

  2038. faith

  2039. as

  2040. we

  2041. partake

  2042. of

  2043. these

  2044. elements

  2045. we pray

  2046. in

  2047. Jesus

  2048. name

  2049. amen
