  1. Please take your Bibles and open them up this morning again to the book of Psalms.

  2. We've been walking our way through several of the Psalms this summer and we've come to Psalm

  3. ! chapter 37 this morning. If you don't have a copy of God's Word with you, if you didn't bring one,

  4. that's okay. We have them in the seat backs nearby and feel free to make use of that. Our text is

  5. Psalm! chapter 37. It is another Psalm of David and when you've found that, let's stand in honor of

  6. the reading of God's Word this morning. Psalm! chapter 37.

  7. David writes,

  8. Fret not yourself because of evildoers. Be not envious of wrongdoers, for they will soon fade like grass and

  9. wither like the green herb. Trust in the Lord and do good. Dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.

  10. Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the

  11. Lord. Trust in Him and He will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and your

  12. justice as the noonday. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him. Fret not yourself over

  13. the one who prospers in His way, over the man who carries out evil devices. Refrain from anger and

  14. forsake wrath. Fret not yourself. It tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those

  15. who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land. In just a little while the wicked will be no more.

  16. Though you look carefully at His place, He will not be there. But the meek shall inherit the land

  17. and delight themselves in abundant peace. The wicked plots against the righteous and gnashes

  18. his teeth at Him. But the Lord laughs at the wicked, for He sees that His day is coming.

  19. The wicked draw the sword and bend their bows to bring down the poor and the needy,

  20. to slay those whose way is upright. Their sword shall enter their own heart and their bows shall be

  21. broken. Better is the little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked. For the arms of

  22. the wicked shall be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous. The Lord knows the days of the

  23. blameless and their heritage will remain forever. They are not put to shame in evil times. In the days

  24. of famine they shall have abundance, but the wicked will perish. The enemies of the Lord are like the glory

  25. of the pastures. They vanish like smoke. They vanish away. The wicked borrows but does not pay back. But the

  26. righteous is generous and gives. For those blessed by the Lord shall inherit the land, but those cursed

  27. by Him shall be cut off. The steps of a man are established by the Lord when he delights in his way.

  28. Though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds His hand.

  29. I have been young and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or His children begging

  30. for bread. He is ever lending generously and His children become a blessing. Turn away from evil

  31. and do good. So shall you dwell forever. For the Lord loves justice. He will not forsake His saints.

  32. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off. The righteous shall

  33. inherit the land and dwell upon it forever. The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom and His tongue

  34. speaks justice. The law of His God is in His heart. His steps do not slip. The wicked watches for the

  35. righteous and seeks to put him to death. The Lord will not abandon him to his power or let him be

  36. condemned when he is brought to trial. Wait for the Lord and keep His way, and He will exalt you to

  37. inherit the land. You will look on when the wicked are cut off. I have seen a wicked, ruthless man

  38. spreading himself like a green laurel tree, but he passed away, and behold, he was no more. Though I

  39. sought him, he could not be found. Mark the blameless and behold the upright, for there is a future for the

  40. man of peace, but transgressors shall be altogether destroyed. The future of the wicked shall be cut off.

  41. The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord. He is their stronghold in times of trouble.

  42. The Lord helps them and delivers them. He delivers them from the wicked and saves them because they

  43. take refuge in Him. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  44. Father, we pray as we just sang, God, would you show us Christ?

  45. Would you reveal your glory through the preaching of your word this morning? We ask in Jesus' name.

  46. Amen. You may be seated.

  47. One of my favorite games to play as a kid was the game of life. Have you ever played the game of life?

  48. If you've played the game, then you know that you quite literally work your way through many of life's

  49. important milestones. You get an education, you get your first job, you get married, you have kids,

  50. and you work your way all the way through the winding turns until you get to the end of the game and you

  51. retire. And the point of the game is whoever stacks up the most money by the end of the game

  52. wins the game of life. Imagine playing the game of life with someone who has no regard whatsoever for

  53. the rules of the game. So you take a few turns and after a while you realize when nobody is looking,

  54. when they think you're not looking, they slip a couple extra hundreds out of the bank and into

  55. their money pile. And when it comes time for them to pick their career, they stack the cards in their

  56. favor so they make sure that they get the highest paying job in the game. And when they spin the wheel,

  57. they make certain that they only land on all the good tiles. And if they do accidentally land on

  58. something bad, well, they just blame the wheel and they spin again. Meanwhile, there you are trying

  59. your very best, playing the game according to the rules. And yet you are struggling to get by. It's

  60. totally unfair. And their little car is cruising their way through the game of life while your little

  61. car is struggling, moving at a snail's pace, paying off your debts, following all the rules. You

  62. would probably be frustrated playing that game, wouldn't you? In fact, you would probably at

  63. some point wonder, where in the world is mom or dad? Don't they care that the rules are being broken?

  64. And won't they come and set things right and make certain that things are played by the rules? This

  65. isn't how it should be. And yet sadly, this unfair experience is oftentimes not just a game. For many,

  66. this is how real life goes. You may have experienced some of this frustration yourself in your own life.

  67. Your non-believing neighbors who do not follow the Lord, do not profess faith in Christ, do not seek

  68. to obey his law. They are seeming to have life on easy mode while you face trial after trial after trial

  69. your co-worker lies and cheats his way into yet another promotion while you just keep your head

  70. down and quietly do your job and no one seems to notice. Why is it so? And you may be prone to wonder,

  71. well, where is God in all of this? Does he not see how unfair this is? Will he not step in and make this

  72. right? Does he not care that the wicked seem to succeed while the righteous seem to struggle?

  73. This is the tension that David is dealing with in Psalm chapter 37. He wrestles with this tension

    Psalms 37 chapter mention

  74. of the success of the wicked and the struggle of the righteous. But in the end, he calls all of God's

  75. people to lift up our head from the game for just a minute, take a step back and remember the confidence

  76. that we have in our good God and the promises that he's made to us in Christ. Here's the main idea for us

  77. this morning in Psalm chapter 37 is this. God's promised future produces present faithfulness

    Psalms 37 chapter mention

  78. despite our present frustration. And the Psalm, as you may have noticed, as I read is long as 40 verses

  79. long and it's actually an acrostic poem in the Hebrew. It's one of several in the book of Psalms.

  80. It is a wisdom Psalm and you may have noticed that it, it kind of reads a little bit more like the book

  81. of Proverbs than it does like a Psalm. And in fact, several of these verses, the first verse is quoted

  82. verbatim in the book of Proverbs in Proverbs 24 verse 19. This is family wisdom that's passed down

    Proverbs 24:19

  83. from King David to King Solomon and now down to us this morning. And so because this is a wisdom Psalm

  84. and because it is an acrostic poem, it's not really progressing linearly like many of the texts do. It

  85. doesn't go in a straight line from verse 1 to verse 40. And so we're not going to walk straight

  86. through it like we ordinarily would in a more linear text. Rather, we're going to take it in three

  87. clear themes. Now, hopefully you heard, as I read through the Psalm, three clear movements that we

  88. see here in Psalm 37. Again, we're going to see our present frustration, our promised future,

  89. and our patient faithfulness. This will be our outline this morning. If you're taking notes,

  90. our present frustration, our promised future, and our patient faithfulness. First, let's consider

  91. our present frustration. This Psalm, like many of the Psalms, it again, it makes this clear distinction

  92. to us between these two groups of people. There are the righteous and there are the wicked. Two groups

  93. of people, every single person in the world, every single person in this room belongs to one or the

  94. other of these two groups. You either are counted righteous by faith in Christ. That's the only way

  95. to be in this group. Or you are by nature, default, you are in this category of the wicked. There's no

  96. neutral. There's no third category. There's nowhere in between. Two groups of people, the righteous or

  97. the wicked. And that wickedness is seen, David shows us, in the fruit and all sorts of bad fruit in a

  98. person's life. David calls them evildoers, wrongdoers in verse one. He says that they plot against the

  99. righteous. In verse 12, they gnash their teeth at them. They draw the sword. They bend their bows to

  100. bring down the poor and the needy and to slay those whose way is upright. Apparently, these wicked

  101. people, they are plotting and scheming ways to destroy the righteous. They're not indifferent

  102. towards the righteous. They don't ignore the righteous. They are antagonistic. They get ahead

  103. by putting the righteous ones down. Verse 32 says, the wicked watches for the righteous and seeks to put

  104. him to death. We recently finished going through the book of Genesis. Don't you remember? In the Garden of

  105. Eden, this is the ongoing conflict ever since the Garden of Eden between that seed of the woman and the

  106. seed of the serpent. This is ongoing enmity between those who belong to the enemy, that great serpent

  107. Satan, and those who belong to the Lord. Ultimately, those who belong to Christ. Church, we have to remember that

  108. we are not in peacetime. We are in wartime. And Satan and all who belong to him are presently waging war

  109. against all who belong to the Lord. Just last week in Nigeria, you may have seen this, the Fulani people

  110. attacked the village of Neridon in Nigeria, targeting, especially, specifically targeting Christians. I mean, this was not a

  111. random attack. They went from house to house shooting and ultimately killed 30 professing Christians.

  112. Eleven of them were children. The youngest was three years old. Church, it's hard for us to fathom that

  113. sort of hardship and persecution here where we live. I mean, my goodness, in Allendal and Mount Pleasant,

  114. we can hardly even wrap our minds around this, but this is very real and is happening to our

  115. brothers and sisters throughout the world, even right now. And what's worse, those who gave an

  116. interview afterwards, they said that the local police refused to come in time to help.

  117. Our brother Sampson in Ghana is still on the run for his life. His church is still scattered. His people

  118. are still being hunted and they have made appeal after appeal after appeal to every form of authority

  119. that they can think of, and yet every form of authority has turned them a blind eye to their

  120. struggles and their persecutors. Get away with it. Why is this so? Do you ever get frustrated by this?

  121. How the wicked just seem to succeed and they get away with whatever they want to do while the righteous

  122. struggle? How is it fair that so many false prosperity gospel teachers are living in luxury and abundance,

  123. while so many gospel preaching church planters are struggling to make ends meet? How is that fair?

  124. This is the frustration that we often face here in a fallen world. And then you add to it the confusion

  125. that we feel because God's word often paints a different picture than what we see in front of

  126. our eyes, doesn't it? And don't you remember what God said in Psalm chapter one? Blessed is the man who

  127. walks not according to the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat

  128. of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the Lord. And on his law, he meditates day and night.

  129. In all that he does, it says he prospers. And yet, what do we see with our eyes? It's the wicked who seem to be blessed.

  130. It's the wicked who seem to prosper. It's the wicked who have the money and the comfort and the luxury.

  131. And it's the wicked who get ahead while the righteous fall behind. Everything seems to be upside down.

  132. It's frustrating. It's frustrating. And to play by the rules and yet to constantly feel like you're falling behind.

  133. Church, look how David calls us to respond here in verse one.

  134. He says, fret not yourself because of evildoers.

  135. Be not envious of wrongdoers.

  136. Fret not yourself because of evildoers.

  137. He says in verse seven, fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,

  138. over the man who carries out evil devices.

  139. He says in verse eight, fret not yourself.

  140. It tends only to evil.

  141. This word fret, it essentially means anger not.

  142. Don't get yourself so angry and so anxious and so agitated,

  143. so bothered over the wicked and their success.

  144. Don't fixate on it so that you get so hot under the collar and bothered by it.

  145. The Christian standard Bible translates it,

  146. don't be agitated by the evildoers.

  147. Church, when you see the injustice done to our brothers and sisters throughout the world,

  148. do you fret?

  149. Or do you envy their success?

  150. And when you jump onto social media and you see the luxurious life of a non-believer,

  151. are you tempted to envy?

  152. When you see a clip like what I saw this week of Tom Brady sailing down the river on his $12 million yacht,

  153. right, not a care in the world,

  154. are you ever prone to think,

  155. man, that would be nice to have what he has?

  156. David says,

  157. be not envious of wrongdoers.

  158. But church,

  159. how in the world is that type of response possible?

  160. How in the world is that even possible?

  161. How can we look on at the success of the wicked here

  162. and not get upset?

  163. And how can we look at what they have

  164. and not be envious

  165. and wish that that were us and not them?

  166. Well, David tells us,

  167. second,

  168. he says,

  169. fix your eyes on our promised future.

  170. Fix your eyes

  171. on our promised future.

  172. I know that it is frustrating

  173. to play a losing game.

  174. I am more competitive than most.

  175. I promise you.

  176. I guarantee you,

  177. I'm more competitive than you.

  178. How would you feel, though,

  179. if you knew that in the end,

  180. church,

  181. that you won

  182. and the wicked lose?

  183. How would it change things for you

  184. to know with certainty

  185. that the end of the game

  186. has already been decided?

  187. That whatever twists and turns

  188. life takes you here and now,

  189. it does not ultimately matter

  190. because soon and very soon

  191. the game will be over

  192. and you will have won.

  193. How would it change things

  194. for you to know

  195. that the success of the wicked

  196. is short-lived

  197. and momentary?

  198. Your suffering,

  199. the suffering of the righteous

  200. is also short-lived

  201. and momentary.

  202. Christian,

  203. don't you realize

  204. this is the advantage

  205. that we have here and now?

  206. This ought to radically transform

  207. the way we go through our life.

  208. We don't know

  209. when this will happen,

  210. but we know with certainty

  211. because the Lord has told us

  212. what will happen

  213. soon and very soon.

  214. The Lord Jesus will return

  215. and He will make

  216. all things right.

  217. We've seen that there are

  218. two very different groups

  219. of people in the world,

  220. but here,

  221. David points us to now

  222. the radically different future

  223. for these two groups of people.

  224. The radically different future

  225. for the wicked

  226. and for the righteous.

  227. Let's think first

  228. about the future

  229. of the wicked.

  230. David says that

  231. the wicked person

  232. who lives this luxurious life

  233. here and now,

  234. verse 2,

  235. he says,

  236. they will soon fade

  237. like the grass

  238. and wither

  239. like the green herb.

  240. Church,

  241. right now,

  242. the wicked are watered

  243. and fed

  244. and nourished

  245. by the common grace

  246. blessings of the Lord.

  247. But what happens

  248. when those common grace

  249. blessings are removed

  250. and all that's left

  251. is the scorching heat

  252. of God's wrath

  253. against the wicked?

  254. He says that wicked person

  255. who lives in open rebellion

  256. against the Lord

  257. and seems to get away with it

  258. here and now,

  259. who seems to have it all together,

  260. who seems to have no worries

  261. in this life,

  262. verse 20,

  263. says like smoke,

  264. they vanish away.

  265. Just like that.

  266. The wicked seem like

  267. they're rooted

  268. and stable now,

  269. like nothing can shake them.

  270. But David says

  271. in verse 35,

  272. I have seen

  273. the wicked,

  274. ruthless man

  275. spreading himself

  276. like a green laurel tree,

  277. rooted

  278. and stable

  279. and strong

  280. and secure.

  281. And yet,

  282. what does he say?

  283. They passed away.

  284. And behold,

  285. he was no more.

  286. Though I sought him,

  287. he could not be found.

  288. And we should remember

  289. that the appearance

  290. of stability

  291. and security

  292. and success

  293. that the wicked have

  294. here and now,

  295. it is all momentary

  296. and fading

  297. in light of eternity.

  298. It simply will not last.

  299. In fact,

  300. you ask,

  301. where is God

  302. in all of this?

  303. David tells us

  304. the Lord is not absent.

  305. He's not ambivalent.

  306. He's not indifferent.

  307. He's not ignorant

  308. of what's happening

  309. in his world.

  310. Rather,

  311. verse 13,

  312. it says,

  313. while the wicked

  314. plot against the righteous,

  315. the Lord laughs

  316. at the wicked.

  317. Why?

  318. For he sees

  319. that his day

  320. is coming.

  321. Yes,

  322. everything is upside down

  323. right now.

  324. But again,

  325. church,

  326. one day soon,

  327. our God

  328. will come

  329. and make it

  330. right.

  331. we confess this

  332. in our statement

  333. of faith

  334. and what we profess

  335. to believe together

  336. as a church.

  337. We say,

  338. we believe

  339. that the end of the world

  340. is quickly approaching,

  341. that at the last day,

  342. Christ will descend

  343. from heaven

  344. in glory

  345. and raise the dead,

  346. both righteous

  347. and the wicked,

  348. from the grave

  349. to final judgment.

  350. A solemn separation

  351. will then take place,

  352. which will fix forever

  353. the final state of men

  354. on principles

  355. of righteousness.

  356. The wicked

  357. will be adjudged

  358. to endless

  359. conscious punishment

  360. in hell.

  361. Those belonging

  362. to Christ

  363. will have eternal life

  364. in the new heavens

  365. and the new earth

  366. and will dwell forever

  367. with God

  368. in righteousness,

  369. peace,

  370. and joy

  371. to the glory

  372. of God.

  373. These are sobering

  374. words,

  375. aren't they,

  376. church?

  377. It is not fun

  378. and it is not popular

  379. to talk about

  380. the reality of hell.

  381. In fact,

  382. several popular

  383. Bible teachers,

  384. public figures,

  385. have recently come out

  386. denying the reality

  387. of a true,

  388. eternal place

  389. of torment

  390. for the wicked.

  391. The truth is unpopular,

  392. but friend,

  393. we're not wiser than God.

  394. Paul tells us

  395. in 1 Thessalonians 1.9,

  396. they,

  397. the wicked,

  398. will suffer

  399. the punishment

  400. of eternal destruction

  401. away

  402. from the presence

  403. of the Lord

  404. and away

  405. from the glory

  406. of His might.

  407. Jesus Himself

  408. tells us

  409. in Matthew 25,

  410. 46,

  411. and these,

  412. the wicked,

  413. will go away

  414. into eternal punishment,

  415. but the righteous

  416. to eternal life.

  417. Do you see

  418. the radically

  419. different destination

  420. here between these

  421. radically different

  422. groups of people?

  423. The righteous

  424. will look to the place

  425. where the wicked

  426. stood,

  427. harassing God's people,

  428. living in common

  429. grace blessings

  430. while denying

  431. the God

  432. who made them,

  433. and in that day

  434. they will be

  435. no more.

  436. Ask yourself,

  437. why would I envy

  438. that person?

  439. Why would I want

  440. what they have?

  441. Why would I fret

  442. over their success

  443. here and now?

  444. It's going to be

  445. gone like that,

  446. like smoke in the air.

  447. It'll vanish.

  448. It'll go away

  449. like in an instant.

  450. Why would I envy

  451. that person?

  452. Church,

  453. we shouldn't envy them

  454. and we shouldn't

  455. fret over them.

  456. You know our response?

  457. It should be

  458. we should have

  459. compassion on them.

  460. We should long

  461. for them

  462. to come to know

  463. the grace of the

  464. Lord Jesus Christ

  465. as we have.

  466. We should pray

  467. for them

  468. that the Lord

  469. would be gracious

  470. to them

  471. as He's been to us.

  472. We should pursue

  473. them with the

  474. gospel of Christ.

  475. We should call

  476. them to repentance

  477. and to faith in Jesus.

  478. But we should

  479. never,

  480. ever,

  481. envy them.

  482. If we're prone

  483. to fret

  484. or envy the wicked,

  485. we should know

  486. that our frustration

  487. here and now,

  488. it often stems

  489. from a lack

  490. of eternal

  491. perspective.

  492. That's the future

  493. for the wicked.

  494. Look,

  495. look at what David

  496. says about the future

  497. for the righteous.

  498. Five times

  499. here in Psalm 37,

  500. five times,

  501. David assures us

  502. the righteous

  503. will inherit

  504. the land.

  505. Did you hear that

  506. promise repeated?

  507. Verse 9,

  508. the evildoers

  509. shall be cut off,

  510. but those who

  511. wait for the Lord

  512. shall inherit

  513. the land.

  514. Verse 11,

  515. the meek

  516. shall inherit

  517. the land

  518. and delight

  519. themselves

  520. in abundant

  521. peace.

  522. Verse 22,

  523. those blessed

  524. by the Lord

  525. shall inherit

  526. the land,

  527. but those cursed

  528. by Him

  529. shall be cut off.

  530. Verse 29,

  531. the righteous

  532. shall inherit

  533. the land

  534. and dwell upon

  535. it forever.

  536. Verse 34,

  537. wait for the Lord

  538. and keep His way

  539. and He will exalt

  540. you to inherit

  541. the land.

  542. You will look on

  543. when the wicked

  544. are cut off.

  545. David holds out

  546. this hope

  547. for God's people.

  548. He assures

  549. his people,

  550. yes,

  551. it may look bleak

  552. now,

  553. but the righteous

  554. look ahead

  555. to God's promises.

  556. The righteous

  557. remember,

  558. God has promised

  559. this time

  560. and this place

  561. when you will be

  562. with me

  563. in the land.

  564. This land promise

  565. we know for Israel,

  566. that's much more

  567. than just a piece

  568. of property.

  569. This was the hope

  570. of God's people.

  571. This was their hope.

  572. This was a place

  573. like a new Eden.

  574. It was a place

  575. where God's people

  576. would again dwell

  577. with God,

  578. where He would be

  579. their God

  580. and they would be

  581. His people,

  582. where they would

  583. worship Him together,

  584. where they would have

  585. peace from their enemies.

  586. David says,

  587. the wicked

  588. will not be there,

  589. but the righteous

  590. and the meek

  591. will inherit

  592. the land.

  593. But church,

  594. of course,

  595. we know

  596. this land promise

  597. is ultimately

  598. fulfilled

  599. in the new Eden

  600. to come,

  601. the new heavens

  602. and the new earth

  603. and not just a patch

  604. of land

  605. in the Middle East,

  606. but all the world

  607. renewed

  608. and restored

  609. for all of God's people.

  610. This is our hope

  611. in Christ.

  612. A place

  613. in a day

  614. where there is

  615. no sin,

  616. where the wicked

  617. are no more,

  618. where all of God's people

  619. can dwell with Him

  620. forever,

  621. where He will be

  622. our God

  623. and we will be

  624. His people.

  625. This is what John saw

  626. in Revelation 21.

  627. He says,

  628. I saw a new heaven

  629. and a new earth

  630. for the first heaven

  631. and the first earth

  632. had passed away

  633. and the sea

  634. was no more.

  635. And I saw

  636. the holy city,

  637. New Jerusalem,

  638. coming down

  639. out of heaven

  640. from God,

  641. prepared as a bride

  642. adorned for her husband.

  643. And I heard

  644. a loud voice

  645. from the throne

  646. saying,

  647. Behold,

  648. the dwelling place

  649. of God

  650. is with man.

  651. He will dwell

  652. with them

  653. and they will be

  654. His people

  655. and God Himself

  656. will be with them

  657. as their God.

  658. He will wipe away

  659. every tear

  660. from their eyes

  661. and death

  662. shall be no more.

  663. neither shall there

  664. be mourning

  665. nor crying

  666. nor pain

  667. anymore

  668. for the former

  669. things have

  670. passed away.

  671. Church,

  672. this is our

  673. future in Christ.

  674. Can't you endure

  675. a little suffering

  676. here

  677. to know

  678. that that day

  679. is coming soon?

  680. Friend,

  681. if you are

  682. still

  683. amongst

  684. the wicked,

  685. if you have

  686. not yet

  687. put your faith

  688. in Christ,

  689. the call

  690. here is clear.

  691. The response

  692. of this passage

  693. for the wicked

  694. is turn from

  695. your sin

  696. and put your

  697. faith in Christ

  698. and you too

  699. will have

  700. this confident

  701. future ahead

  702. of you.

  703. And the response

  704. of the righteous

  705. is to respond

  706. here and now

  707. until that day

  708. with patient

  709. faithfulness.

  710. this is what

  711. we see in our

  712. third and final

  713. point this

  714. morning.

  715. Third,

  716. in light of

  717. all of this,

  718. in light of

  719. this glorious

  720. promise that we

  721. have ahead of

  722. us,

  723. third,

  724. we are called

  725. to patient

  726. faithfulness

  727. here and now.

  728. Again,

  729. if you knew

  730. that at the

  731. end of this

  732. game,

  733. while the

  734. cheater sat

  735. and counted

  736. up his

  737. money,

  738. at some

  739. point,

  740. dad is

  741. going to

  742. come,

  743. he's going

  744. to take

  745. away

  746. everything

  747. that he's

  748. gained,

  749. he's going

  750. to hand

  751. it to you,

  752. he's going

  753. to pick up

  754. your little

  755. car,

  756. he's going

  757. to bring

  758. it all

  759. the way

  760. safely to

  761. the finish

  762. line,

  763. he's going

  764. to declare

  765. you the

  766. winner and

  767. him the

  768. loser,

  769. how would

  770. that transform

  771. the way

  772. you go

  773. through life?

  774. You could

  775. play this

  776. game with

  777. a smile,

  778. knowing that

  779. no matter

  780. what happens,

  781. the end

  782. is secure.

  783. Our

  784. promised

  785. future

  786. ought to

  787. produce

  788. present

  789. faithfulness

  790. despite

  791. our present

  792. frustration.

  793. David calls

  794. us to

  795. several

  796. practical

  797. responses

  798. here in

  799. this

  800. psalm.

  801. It is

  802. so full

  803. of

  804. imperatives

  805. and commands

  806. for us,

  807. directing us

  808. what to

  809. do.

  810. I just

  811. want to

  812. group them.

  813. I want us

  814. to think

  815. in five

  816. categories

  817. here as

  818. we close

  819. by way

  820. of response.

  821. The first,

  822. protect

  823. your heart.

  824. Protect

  825. your heart.

  826. In other

  827. words,

  828. do not

  829. join them

  830. in their

  831. game.

  832. when you

  833. see the

  834. success

  835. of the

  836. wicked

  837. Christian,

  838. do not

  839. fret,

  840. do not

  841. envy,

  842. he says

  843. in verse

  844. 1.

  845. Do not

  846. be

  847. wrathful,

  848. do not

  849. be angry,

  850. he says

  851. in verse

  852. 8.

  853. Do not

  854. be tempted

  855. to join

  856. in with

  857. them,

  858. and they're

  859. evil,

  860. he says

  861. in verse

  862. 27.

  863. You're

  864. going to

  865. feel

  866. tempted

  867. from

  868. time

  869. to

  870. time

  871. to

  872. wish

  873. that

  874. you

  875. had

  876. what

  877. they

  878. have.

  879. Right?

  880. But remember

  881. the promise,

  882. church.

  883. Remember

  884. what lies

  885. ahead of

  886. you.

  887. Remember

  888. that this

  889. present

  890. moment

  891. will be

  892. over

  893. before

  894. you

  895. know

  896. it,

  897. and so

  898. protect

  899. your

  900. heart

  901. from

  902. envy.

  903. The

  904. second,

  905. put your

  906. trust

  907. entirely

  908. in the

  909. Lord.

  910. Put

  911. your

  912. trust

  913. entirely

  914. in the

  915. Lord.

  916. Fix

  917. your

  918. eyes

  919. on our

  920. great

  921. and

  922. sovereign

  923. God.

  924. And

  925. remember

  926. who

  927. is

  928. in

  929. charge

  930. of

  931. this

  932. world

  933. even

  934. when

  935. things

  936. look

  937. bleak.

  938. So

  939. David

  940. says,

  941. trust

  942. in the

  943. Lord.

  944. Verse

  945. three,

  946. do you

  947. trust

  948. him?

  949. Do you

  950. trust

  951. him to

  952. do

  953. what's

  954. right?

  955. Do

  956. you

  957. trust

  958. him

  959. that

  960. he's

  961. in

  962. control?

  963. Do

  964. you

  965. trust

  966. him

  967. to

  968. bring

  969. justice

  970. in

  971. the

  972. end?

  973. Delight

  974. yourself

  975. in

  976. the

  977. Lord.

  978. Verse

  979. four,

  980. and

  981. he

  982. will

  983. give

  984. you

  985. the

  986. desires

  987. of

  988. your

  989. heart.

  990. Commit

  991. your

  992. way

  993. to

  994. the

  995. Lord.

  996. Trust

  997. him

  998. and

  999. he

  1000. will

  1001. act.

  1002. You

  1003. know,

  1004. the

  1005. wicked

  1006. take

  1007. this

  1008. as

  1009. a

  1010. prosperity

  1011. promise.

  1012. If I

  1013. just

  1014. delight

  1015. in

  1016. him

  1017. enough,

  1018. I'll

  1019. get

  1020. whatever

  1021. I

  1022. want,

  1023. right?

  1024. But

  1025. the

  1026. righteous

  1027. know

  1028. better.

  1029. We

  1030. know

  1031. that

  1032. the

  1033. Lord

  1034. himself

  1035. is

  1036. the

  1037. greatest

  1038. treasure

  1039. in

  1040. all

  1041. the

  1042. world,

  1043. far

  1044. better

  1045. than

  1046. riches,

  1047. far

  1048. better

  1049. than

  1050. luxury,

  1051. far

  1052. better

  1053. than

  1054. momentary

  1055. success.

  1056. We

  1057. know

  1058. Psalm

  1059. 1611

  1060. in

  1061. his

  1062. presence

  1063. there

  1064. is

  1065. fullness

  1066. of

  1067. joy.

  1068. At

  1069. his

  1070. right

  1071. hand

  1072. are

  1073. pleasures

  1074. forever

  1075. more.

  1076. So the

  1077. call to

  1078. God's

  1079. people

  1080. here and

  1081. now,

  1082. delight

  1083. yourself

  1084. in

  1085. him.

  1086. Trust

  1087. in

  1088. him.

  1089. Commit

  1090. yourself

  1091. to

  1092. him and

  1093. one day

  1094. soon

  1095. he will

  1096. bring

  1097. you

  1098. into

  1099. the

  1100. land

  1101. to

  1102. be

  1103. with

  1104. him

  1105. forever.

  1106. Do you

  1107. delight

  1108. in

  1109. him?

  1110. Third

  1111. category,

  1112. David

  1113. calls us

  1114. to

  1115. pursue

  1116. what

  1117. is

  1118. good.

  1119. Pursue

  1120. what

  1121. is

  1122. good.

  1123. One

  1124. of

  1125. the

  1126. common

  1127. mistakes

  1128. that we

  1129. can

  1130. easily

  1131. walk

  1132. into

  1133. because

  1134. we

  1135. know

  1136. what

  1137. the

  1138. future

  1139. holds

  1140. is

  1141. that

  1142. might

  1143. lead

  1144. us

  1145. to

  1146. passivity.

  1147. We

  1148. know

  1149. what's

  1150. going

  1151. to

  1152. happen

  1153. anyway.

  1154. God

  1155. is

  1156. going

  1157. to

  1158. come.

  1159. He's

  1160. going

  1161. to

  1162. set

  1163. things

  1164. right.

  1165. We'll

  1166. be

  1167. with

  1168. him

  1169. soon.

  1170. Why

  1171. not

  1172. just

  1173. sit

  1174. back

  1175. on

  1176. our

  1177. hands

  1178. and

  1179. wait?

  1180. I

  1181. love

  1182. that

  1183. David

  1184. no

  1185. believer

  1186. do

  1187. good.

  1188. Verse

  1189. 3

  1190. Dwell

  1191. in

  1192. the

  1193. land.

  1194. Befriend

  1195. faithfulness.

  1196. Lend

  1197. generously

  1198. and

  1199. give.

  1200. He

  1201. says

  1202. verse

  1203. 21

  1204. Utter

  1205. wisdom.

  1206. Speak

  1207. justice.

  1208. He

  1209. says

  1210. verse

  1211. 30

  1212. In

  1213. other

  1214. words,

  1215. Christian,

  1216. we are

  1217. called

  1218. to be

  1219. active

  1220. in

  1221. pursuing

  1222. good

  1223. here

  1224. and

  1225. now

  1226. while

  1227. we

  1228. wait

  1229. for

  1230. the

  1231. Lord

  1232. to

  1233. come.

  1234. We

  1235. don't

  1236. just

  1237. sit

  1238. back

  1239. on

  1240. our

  1241. hands

  1242. and

  1243. do

  1244. nothing.

  1245. We

  1246. pursue

  1247. good.

  1248. We love

  1249. our

  1250. neighbor

  1251. as

  1252. ourselves.

  1253. We put

  1254. our hands

  1255. and our

  1256. feet

  1257. and our

  1258. mouths

  1259. to the

  1261. of

  1262. righteousness.

  1263. The

  1264. certain

  1265. future

  1266. that we

  1267. have

  1268. ahead of

  1269. us

  1270. ought to

  1271. produce

  1272. in us

  1273. a radical

  1274. commitment

  1275. to live

  1276. for the

  1277. glory of

  1278. God

  1279. and the

  1280. good of

  1281. our

  1282. neighbor

  1283. here

  1284. and

  1285. now.

  1286. Are we

  1287. doing

  1288. this,

  1289. church?

  1290. Does

  1291. your

  1292. future

  1293. hope

  1294. shape

  1295. the

  1296. way

  1297. you

  1298. speak?

  1299. Does

  1300. your

  1301. future

  1302. hope

  1303. shape

  1304. the

  1305. way

  1306. you

  1307. think

  1308. about

  1309. money?

  1310. Does

  1311. your

  1312. future

  1313. hope

  1314. shape

  1315. the

  1316. way

  1317. you

  1319. about

  1320. the

  1321. way

  1322. that

  1323. you

  1324. live?

  1325. Pursue

  1326. good.

  1327. Fourth

  1328. category

  1329. David

  1330. calls us

  1331. practice

  1332. patient

  1333. endurance.

  1334. Practice

  1335. patient

  1336. endurance.

  1337. Here's a

  1338. difficult

  1339. one.

  1340. Be

  1341. still

  1342. he says

  1343. verse

  1344. 7.

  1345. Be

  1346. still

  1347. before

  1348. the

  1349. Lord.

  1350. Wait

  1351. patiently

  1352. for

  1353. him.

  1354. Wait

  1355. for the

  1356. Lord

  1357. and keep

  1358. his way

  1359. he says

  1360. in verse

  1361. 34.

  1362. Don't

  1363. feel a

  1364. need

  1365. to act

  1366. on every

  1367. impulse

  1368. to right

  1369. every

  1370. wrong

  1371. and take

  1372. every matter

  1373. into your

  1374. own

  1375. hands.

  1376. Rather

  1377. he calls

  1378. us

  1379. verse

  1380. 11

  1381. be

  1382. meek.

  1383. Would

  1384. you

  1385. describe

  1386. yourself

  1387. as

  1388. meek?

  1389. Would

  1390. others

  1391. describe

  1392. you

  1393. as

  1394. meek?

  1395. The

  1396. kingdom

  1397. of

  1398. God

  1399. does

  1400. not

  1401. belong

  1402. to

  1403. those

  1404. who

  1405. are

  1406. strong

  1407. and

  1408. prideful

  1409. and

  1410. can

  1411. take

  1412. care

  1413. of

  1414. every

  1415. problem

  1416. that

  1417. comes

  1418. their

  1419. way

  1420. in

  1421. their

  1422. own

  1423. strength.

  1424. Rather

  1425. what

  1426. does

  1427. verse

  1428. 11

  1429. teach

  1430. us?

  1431. The

  1432. meek

  1433. shall

  1434. inherit

  1435. the

  1436. land.

  1437. And

  1438. don't

  1439. you

  1440. know

  1441. again

  1442. Jesus

  1443. quotes

  1444. this

  1445. verse

  1446. in the

  1447. sermon

  1448. on the

  1449. mount.

  1450. We

  1451. read it

  1452. this

  1453. morning.

  1454. Again

  1455. transforming

  1456. this

  1457. for us

  1458. so that

  1459. we

  1460. see

  1461. this

  1462. promise

  1463. is not

  1464. just

  1465. the

  1466. land.

  1467. Rather

  1468. what does

  1469. he say?

  1470. the

  1471. meek

  1472. shall

  1473. inherit

  1474. the

  1475. earth.

  1476. Are

  1477. you

  1478. meek?

  1479. Fifth

  1480. and

  1481. final

  1482. category

  1483. David

  1484. says

  1485. Christian

  1486. pay

  1487. attention

  1488. to

  1489. the

  1490. righteous.

  1491. Pay

  1492. attention

  1493. to the

  1494. righteous.

  1495. David

  1496. reflects

  1497. back as

  1498. an old

  1499. man

  1500. in

  1501. verse

  1502. 25.

  1503. He

  1504. looks

  1505. out

  1506. and he

  1507. says

  1508. I

  1509. have

  1510. been

  1511. young

  1512. and

  1513. now

  1514. I'm

  1515. old

  1516. yet

  1517. I

  1518. have

  1519. not

  1520. seen

  1521. the

  1522. righteous

  1523. forsaken

  1524. or his

  1525. children

  1526. begging

  1527. for

  1528. bread

  1529. and

  1530. so

  1531. verse

  1532. 37

  1533. he

  1534. says

  1535. mark

  1536. the

  1537. blameless

  1538. and

  1539. behold

  1540. the

  1541. upright

  1542. mark

  1543. the

  1544. blameless

  1545. and

  1546. behold

  1547. the

  1548. upright

  1549. we

  1550. have

  1551. a

  1552. choice

  1553. what

  1554. we

  1555. pay

  1556. attention

  1557. to

  1558. don't

  1559. we

  1560. we

  1561. have

  1562. a

  1563. choice

  1564. what

  1565. we

  1566. set

  1567. our

  1568. eyes

  1569. on

  1570. and

  1571. the

  1572. temptation

  1573. is

  1574. to

  1575. pay

  1576. attention

  1577. to

  1578. this

  1579. successful

  1580. wicked

  1581. man

  1582. but

  1583. haven't

  1584. we

  1585. seen

  1586. this

  1587. lens

  1588. only

  1589. to

  1590. frustration

  1591. the

  1592. world

  1593. lifts

  1594. up

  1595. and

  1596. pays

  1597. attention

  1598. to

  1599. the

  1600. successful

  1601. wicked

  1602. man

  1603. instead

  1604. Christian

  1605. we're

  1606. called

  1607. to

  1608. pay

  1609. attention

  1610. and

  1611. learn

  1612. from

  1613. those

  1614. whose

  1615. life

  1616. although

  1617. it

  1618. may

  1620. the

  1621. flash

  1622. and

  1623. the

  1624. glamour

  1632. deems

  1633. worthy

  1639. marked

  1640. by

  1641. steady

  1642. faithfulness

  1643. to

  1644. the

  1645. Lord

  1646. their

  1647. life

  1648. is marked

  1649. by

  1650. meekness

  1651. do you

  1652. have

  1653. anyone

  1654. like that

  1655. in your

  1656. life

  1657. I think

  1658. it would

  1659. be

  1660. to our

  1661. benefit

  1662. if each

  1663. and every

  1664. one of

  1665. us took

  1666. our eyes

  1667. off of

  1668. the

  1669. temporary

  1670. success

  1671. of the

  1672. wicked

  1673. and instead

  1674. fixed

  1675. our eyes

  1676. on the

  1677. eternal

  1678. promises

  1679. to the

  1680. meek

  1681. and the

  1682. righteous

  1683. and

  1684. friend

  1685. no one

  1686. has

  1687. embodied

  1688. this

  1689. more

  1690. than

  1691. King

  1692. Jesus

  1693. King

  1694. David

  1695. experienced

  1696. the

  1697. frustration

  1698. that we

  1699. often feel

  1700. struggling

  1701. in

  1702. righteousness

  1703. while the

  1704. wicked

  1710. nobody

  1711. knew

  1712. this

  1715. than

  1716. King

  1717. Jesus

  1718. Jesus

  1719. Christ

  1720. is

  1721. the

  1722. righteous

  1723. man

  1724. who

  1743. who

  1744. never

  1745. once

  1746. fretted

  1747. over

  1748. their

  1750. who

  1751. completely

  1753. totally

  1754. entrusted

  1756. to

  1757. God
