  1. Well, would you please take your Bibles this morning and open them up one last time to the book of Psalms for the summer school is back in session.

  2. The boys are back in school, which means we are preparing to depart from the Psalms once more and we'll be somewhere else next week.

  3. But one more Sunday this morning in the book of Psalms, Psalm chapter 39.

    Psalms 39 chapter mention

  4. If you don't have a Bible of your own, you can use one in the seat back nearby.

  5. We provide those for you to make it easy for you.

  6. But you do need a Bible open.

  7. I want you to have your eyes on God's word even as you hear it from my mouth.

  8. So Psalm chapter 39, when you've found that, let's stand in honor of the reading of God's word this morning.

    Psalms 39 chapter mention

  9. This is the Psalm of David.

  10. He says, I said, I will guard my ways that I may not sin with my tongue.

  11. I will guard my mouth with a muzzle.

  12. So long as the wicked are in my presence.

  13. I was mute and silent.

  14. I held my peace to no avail and my distress grew worse.

  15. My heart became hot within me.

  16. As I mused, the fire burned and then I spoke with my tongue.

  17. Oh Lord, make me know my end.

  18. And what is the measure of my days?

  19. Let me know how fleeting I am.

  20. Behold, you have made my days a few hand breaths.

  21. And my lifetime is as nothing before you.

  22. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath.

  23. Surely a man goes about as a shadow.

  24. Surely for nothing they are in turmoil.

  25. Man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather.

  26. And now, oh Lord, for what do I wait?

  27. My hope is in you.

  28. Deliver me from all my transgressions.

  29. Do not make me the scorn of the fool.

  30. I am mute.

  31. I do not open my mouth.

  32. For it is you who have done it.

  33. Remove your stroke from me.

  34. I am spent by the hostility of your hand.

  35. When you discipline a man with rebukes for sin,

  36. you consume like a moth what is dear to him.

  37. Surely all mankind is a mere breath.

  38. Hear my prayer, oh Lord, and give ear to my cry.

  39. Hold not your peace at my tears.

  40. For I am a sojourner with you, a guest like all my fathers.

  41. Look away from me that I may smile again before I depart and am no more.

  42. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  43. Father God, we pray once more, would you speak through the preaching of your word?

  44. Would you show us Christ and draw our hearts to him in faith?

  45. We pray in Jesus' name.

  46. Amen.

  47. You may be seated.

  48. I love to hear missionary stories,

  49. and I was reminded this week of the story of the missionary C.T. Stud.

  50. C.T. Stud.

  51. He was a missionary back in the 1800s.

  52. He had just about everything going for him.

  53. He was born into a wealthy family.

  54. He quickly became a star cricket player

  55. and was world-renowned for one of the best cricket players in the British Empire.

  56. But when he heard the gospel and put his faith in Jesus at the age of 18,

  57. everything changed for C.T. Stud.

  58. His priorities changed.

  59. His perspective on what a successful life looked like changed.

  60. His vision of life and success changed.

  61. And he was one of what we call the Cambridge Seven,

  62. who left behind their elite status to go and follow Hudson Taylor to China as missionaries in 1885.

  63. The life that C.T. Stud.

  64. chose is worlds apart from the life that he left and the life that he could have had.

  65. And just to give you an example of this,

  66. two years later in 1887,

  67. he received an inheritance in the sum of $125,000,

  68. which in today's money doesn't seem like that can buy too much, right?

  69. But in today's economy, that would be well over $4 million today.

  70. And what did C.T. Stud do?

  71. He gave most of it away for the cause of missions and the spread of the gospel.

  72. He gave away this successful future, this promising life,

  73. in order to face all sorts of struggles overseas.

  74. He faced chronic asthma.

  75. He lived in poverty.

  76. He dealt with heart issues and disease.

  77. He ate a diet that was mostly just wet rice.

  78. And he and his wife were constantly sick, constantly ill.

  79. They had to send their children back over to England.

  80. They lived separated from them so that they could have a good education there.

  81. They voluntarily lived in hostile climates,

  82. in hostile territories, with hostile people,

  83. and houses made out of mud.

  84. It was a far cry from the life of luxury that could have been for C.T. Stud.

  85. And you wonder, what in the world can motivate someone to live like that?

  86. C.T. wrote a poem at the end of his life in 1931.

  87. By this time, he was in the Congo, again, doing mission work.

  88. He was battling the illness that would eventually take him out.

  89. And in this poem is the constant refrain that helps us understand his motivation.

  90. He says this,

  91. Only one life will soon be passed.

  92. Only what's done for Christ will last.

  93. Only one life will soon be passed.

  94. Only what's done for Christ will last.

  95. C.T. had learned the lesson that David asked God to teach him here in Psalm 39.

  96. He learned the bad news that life here in a fallen world is hard.

  97. And we experience this, don't we?

  98. And we deal with issues.

  99. We deal with stress.

  100. We deal with sickness.

  101. We deal with sacrifice.

  102. The life in a fallen world is hard,

  103. especially if you want to live faithfully to Christ.

  104. But he also learned the good news that this present life,

  105. with all of its hardship,

  106. with all of its suffering,

  107. with all of this weight of sin,

  108. and this present life is a passing moment in the scheme of eternity.

  109. Soon and very soon,

  110. our God will come and transform this world,

  111. and we who know Christ will be with him forever.

  112. Church, that truth ought to shape the way that we go about our lives here and now.

  113. Amen?

  114. David, here in Psalm 39,

  115. he is dealing with the weight and the difficulty of living in a fallen world.

  116. He's dealing with some of these same tensions that you and I deal with here in a fallen world.

  117. And he gives us three strategies for life in a fallen world.

  118. This will be our outline if you're taking notes.

  119. Three strategies for life in a fallen world.

  120. The first strategy he gives us,

  121. guard your tongue.

  122. Guard your tongue.

  123. Look there with me to verse 1.

  124. Here, it's like David is having a flashback.

  125. He's remembering a time of intense suffering.

  126. We don't know exactly what was going on here.

  127. It could be when Saul was still occupying the throne,

  128. and David faced intense persecution then.

  129. It could be when his own son Absalom rebelled against him.

  130. You could draw from a number of instances in David's life.

  131. But David is thinking back,

  132. and he's recalling this time of suffering,

  133. and he remembers a commitment that he made to himself.

  134. Look there at verse 1.

  135. He says,

  136. I said,

  137. I will guard my ways that I may not sin with my tongue.

  138. And I will guard my mouth with a muzzle,

  139. so long as the wicked are in my presence.

  140. David commits in this moment of suffering

  141. to keep a close guard on his tongue.

  142. And he gives us two clear reasons why.

  143. They're in verse 1.

  144. The first reason, for one,

  145. and maybe the most obvious reason,

  146. he says he's going to guard his tongue,

  147. guard his ways,

  148. so that he doesn't sin with his tongue.

  149. Now David hits on something very important here,

  150. doesn't he?

  151. He understands how easy it is for us to sin with our speech.

  152. David understands that our words have incredible power,

  153. more power than any weapon on the earth.

  154. Our words can build up or they can tear down.

  155. Our words can lead one another into truth,

  156. or they can lead one another into destruction and deception.

  157. Our words can make someone feel like they are worthy,

  158. and like they can just go do anything.

  159. We can build one another up and encourage one another in that way,

  160. or our words can make one another feel worthless,

  161. and like we can't do anything.

  162. Our tongues, our words can speak in ways that honor the Lord,

  163. as they were made to do,

  164. or they can speak in ways that dishonor the Lord,

  165. as we often do here on this side of the fall.

  166. Church, when we're pressed,

  167. and when we're under distress,

  168. when we're suffering,

  169. I think it's an all-too-common occurrence

  170. that we fail to keep a guard over our mouth,

  171. don't we?

  172. And we're tempted to grumble,

  173. and to complain when we don't get our way.

  174. We're tempted to speak foolishly,

  175. and to speak quickly,

  176. and to speak rashly.

  177. Do we realize that like David,

  178. we don't have to say everything that we think?

  179. You can, like David,

  180. put a metaphorical muzzle over your mouth

  181. if you're worried that something might come out sinfully,

  182. if you don't.

  183. You know, this is wise.

  184. This is practical wisdom here for living in a fallen world.

  185. We ought to, as God's people,

  186. be very careful with our words.

  187. In the New Testament, the book of James,

  188. he says something very similar, doesn't he?

  189. In James chapter 3,

    James 3 chapter mention

  190. he says,

  191. how great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire.

  192. He's talking about your tongue.

  193. The tongue is a fire,

  194. a world of unrighteousness.

  195. The tongue is set among our members,

  196. staining the whole body,

  197. setting on fire the entire course of life,

  198. and set on fire by hell.

  199. For every kind of beast and bird,

  200. of reptile and sea creature,

  201. can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind.

  202. But listen to this.

  203. But no human being can tame the tongue.

  204. It is a restless evil,

  205. full of deadly poison.

  206. With it we bless our Lord and Father,

  207. and with it we curse people

  208. who are made in the likeness of God.

  209. From the same mouth come blessing

  210. and cursing.

  211. My brothers,

  212. these things ought not to be so.

  213. Have you experienced this in your own life?

  214. Do you ever wrestle with what comes out of your mouth?

  215. You wish you didn't say that thing that you just said?

  216. David knows he is in danger of sinning with his tongue.

  217. And so he says,

  218. I'm going to keep silent.

  219. It is better for him and for us, church,

  220. to suffer in silence rather than for us to speak

  221. and to sin against the Lord with our tongue.

  222. That's the first reason.

  223. The second reason,

  224. he says he will guard his mouth with a muzzle

  225. because he is in the presence of the wicked.

  226. See that in verse 1.

  227. Now think about that for a minute.

  228. This is God-centered wisdom here for David.

  229. Why does he not want to speak sinfully?

  230. He says that he is in the presence of the wicked.

  231. Well, why does that matter?

  232. It's because he does not want to give the wicked

  233. any reason to rob God of the glory that he's due.

  234. David's not just thinking about himself

  235. and defending himself

  236. and speaking that word that he's talking back

  237. and speaking against those accusations

  238. that are coming against him.

  239. He's not just speaking about himself,

  240. thinking about himself.

  241. He is thinking ultimately about the glory of God.

  242. What would these wicked people say

  243. if they heard God's anointed covenant king

  244. just grumbling and whining about his life?

  245. What would they say

  246. if they hear God's anointed king

  247. complaining about what God has brought into his life

  248. by his hand of providence?

  249. You can imagine how they'd run wild with that.

  250. What would they say about God?

  251. How would David's foolish words

  252. commend God's goodness to the wicked?

  253. We have to realize that God's opponents,

  254. even if we don't think that they care at all

  255. about what we say when we are in our best day

  256. talking about the goodness of God,

  257. we can be sure that they are listening

  258. when we grumble and complain.

  259. And they will take that and run wild with that

  260. to rob God of the glory that he's due.

  261. David is resolved, as we should be,

  262. to only speak in ways that magnify the glory of God

  263. in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  264. Church, I confess to you,

  265. this is incredibly difficult.

  266. Isn't it?

  267. Am I alone in that?

  268. Church, I confess,

  269. I think about the ways this week,

  270. and you take inventory of this week,

  271. the ways that I have spoken to my family,

  272. to others around me,

  273. the words that I thought that I should speak in my head,

  274. but it's hard to rein it back in.

  275. This is incredibly hard.

  276. But church, God will give you grace.

  277. You can speak in ways that honor the Lord.

  278. I want you to try it with me this week

  279. as we look ahead to Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.

  280. Take inventory of your speech.

  281. Speak carefully and intentionally

  282. to only speak in ways

  283. that magnify the glory of God.

  284. And church, would you pray for his help?

  285. Because we need it.

  286. David is determined to muzzle his mouth,

  287. but we see in verse 2,

  288. that determination only lasts so long, doesn't it?

  289. Verse 2, he says,

  290. I was mute and silent,

  291. but I held my peace to no avail.

  292. My distress grew worse.

  293. My heart became hot within me,

  294. and I mused, and the fire burned.

  295. It's like this image.

  296. You see an image of a volcano here?

  297. It is bubbling and gurgling under the surface.

  298. You've probably felt this very thing before.

  299. In your mind, you're telling yourself,

  300. don't say it.

  301. Don't say it.

  302. Don't say it, right?

  303. And you can cover up your mouth if you want,

  304. but at some point,

  305. that just kind of burst its way out.

  306. And there's no getting it back.

  307. It's rumbling here inside of David.

  308. It's hot like fire,

  309. and then he speaks,

  310. but it may surprise you to see

  311. what he says and who he says it to.

  312. He doesn't speak horizontally to the wicked at all,

  313. does he?

  314. He doesn't lash out at them.

  315. No, when he speaks,

  316. he speaks vertically,

  317. directly to God.

  318. And what he says to God may surprise you.

  319. He doesn't complain about the wicked.

  320. He doesn't wish evil on them even,

  321. not at this point.

  322. Rather,

  323. he asks God to give him the grace of a new perspective.

  324. This is the second strategy here.

  325. Second,

  326. measure your days.

  327. Measure your days.

  328. What does David pray in verse four?

  329. Look there with me.

  330. He says,

  331. Oh Lord,

  332. make me know my end.

  333. And what is the measure of my days?

  334. Let me know how fleeting I am.

  335. Now that is a strange prayer,

  336. isn't it?

  337. David wants to know how long he has to endure life in this fallen world.

  338. God,

  339. when will all this be over?

  340. How long do I have?

  341. Are we talking about one year of this suffering here?

  342. Are we talking about two years?

  343. Are we talking about 20?

  344. Are we talking about 30?

  345. What is it?

  346. If I can maybe see the light at the end of the tunnel here,

  347. maybe I can press on a little bit further.

  348. He asks God to show him,

  349. to impress upon his heart,

  350. the reality of how short life really is.

  351. He says,

  352. Behold,

  353. you have made my days a few hand breaths.

  354. You know what a hand breath is?

  355. You look at your hand.

  356. A hand breath is the width of your hand,

  357. the four fingers across.

  358. Everybody has different size hands.

  359. Some of your hands are bigger than others.

  360. When you shake Treg's hand,

  361. your hand gets lost.

  362. You hold somebody else's hand,

  363. a baby's hand,

  364. you realize how small that hand is.

  365. When David says,

  366. it's just a few hand breaths stacked together,

  367. you realize how short that really is,

  368. don't you?

  369. David says his days are just a few hand breaths.

  370. He says,

  371. My lifetime is as nothing before you.

  372. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath.

  373. He speaks like we read in Ecclesiastes,

  374. doesn't he?

  375. Vanity of vanities.

  376. All is vanity.

  377. This life is short as a breath.

  378. How many breaths have you taken this morning?

  379. Do you think about your next breath?

  380. You breathe in.

  381. You hold it as long as you can.

  382. You breathe out.

  383. David says in comparison with eternity,

  384. in comparison with our infinite God,

  385. who has no beginning and has no end,

  386. as long as our life may seem here,

  387. especially in times of suffering,

  388. it seems like we can't even get to the next day.

  389. David says this life is just a mere breath.

  390. The fact is, church,

  391. you and I will not live forever.

  392. I don't want to be overly morbid with you this morning.

  393. You and I will not live forever.

  394. You are not guaranteed to make it to the end of this sermon.

  395. You are not guaranteed to come back here next week.

  396. You are not guaranteed to leave here and go to lunch.

  397. You don't know how long you have.

  398. And again, when you zoom out of your present life

  399. and you look in the scheme of eternity,

  400. what is this life?

  401. If you have 70, 80, 90 years,

  402. my grandmother is about to turn 99.

  403. That's an old life, right?

  404. Long life.

  405. Not in the scheme of eternity.

  406. It's a breath.

  407. And it's gone.

  408. How would it change things for you

  409. to think and to know how short your time really is?

  410. Church, there is wisdom to be gained

  411. from measuring your days.

  412. Now, depending on where you stand with the Lord,

  413. you're going to hear that fact very differently, aren't you?

  414. You're going to hear that truth very differently.

  415. The non-believer, those who are outside of Christ,

  416. those who have not put their faith in Christ,

  417. they cannot take comfort in this.

  418. The perspective of the non-believer is,

  419. well, you only live once, right?

  420. So eat and drink and be merry,

  421. for tomorrow you die.

  422. You live it up.

  423. And all you have is this life.

  424. It's this short window

  425. to have as much pleasure as you can in this life.

  426. And then it's done.

  427. There's no hope beyond the grave for the non-believer.

  428. So you gather up as much wealth as you can

  429. and you enjoy as much pleasure as you can.

  430. You go see and you go do as much as you can.

  431. You have a bucket list that you want to check off

  432. before you kick the bucket.

  433. The non-believer hears this reminder

  434. how short life is,

  435. how brief our time is,

  436. and that response in their heart is one of fear.

  437. Don't talk to me about that.

  438. They respond with this urgency to live it up

  439. before the bell rings,

  440. before the believer.

  441. The shortness of our time here, church,

  442. is a great comfort for us.

  443. David is like a runner.

  444. He's running and he's rounding the turn

  445. and the people around him are shouting,

  446. there's just one more lap.

  447. You got this.

  448. You can do this.

  449. And he's yelling at them saying,

  450. well, tell me how much longer I have.

  451. How much more do I have to endure?

  452. When can my lungs get a break

  453. and get some oxygen here?

  454. For David and for the believer,

  455. the shortness of our life gives us hope.

  456. We are looking forwards to a time

  457. when we no longer have to deal with suffering.

  458. When we no longer have to deal with the wicked men

  459. and their schemes against us.

  460. We no longer have to deal with our own sin

  461. and the discipline of God in our life.

  462. We don't have to muzzle our mouths anymore

  463. because we won't have to worry about something sinful

  464. coming out of it.

  465. We won't have to worry about how the wicked men around us

  466. will take what we say.

  467. For the Christian,

  468. the shortness of this life

  469. is a great comfort ahead of us.

  470. I've shared before about our friend Holly,

  471. who is now with the Lord.

  472. You all remember Holly?

  473. But before she died,

  474. she was in the hospital very sick

  475. and I went to go speak with her

  476. and we read scripture together

  477. and we prayed together

  478. and we talked about death together

  479. and because she is a Christian,

  480. we talked about what lay ahead of her

  481. after her death.

  482. And afterwards,

  483. I think I've shared this with you before,

  484. I bumped into the doctor

  485. who was there in the room with us

  486. and he said,

  487. you know,

  488. we try not to use that D word too often around here.

  489. Makes people a little bit uncomfortable.

  490. And I said,

  491. sir,

  492. Miss Holly is a Christian

  493. and she is not afraid of death.

  494. We talk about death all the time.

  495. You come to our church,

  496. come on,

  497. we'll tell you about death, right?

  498. And we'll tell you about the hope

  499. that God's people have beyond the grave.

  500. It's not an enemy for us anymore.

  501. Christ has risen.

  502. from the grave.

  503. So for us,

  504. for her,

  505. for David,

  506. death is not the end of her joy.

  507. It's the end of her suffering.

  508. It's not the exit from her best days.

  509. It is the entrance to her best days

  510. in the presence of God

  511. for the rest of eternity.

  512. The believer hears this reminder.

  513. This life is short.

  514. This life is short.

  515. And they take heart

  516. that this light

  517. and momentary affliction

  518. is preparing for you

  519. an eternal weight of glory

  520. beyond all comparison

  521. as we look not to the things

  522. that are seen

  523. which are hard, right?

  524. As we look not to the things

  525. that are seen

  526. which are painful in the present,

  527. but to the things

  528. that are unseen

  529. that God has in store for us

  530. in glory.

  531. Church,

  532. this is the key to endurance.

  533. And this is the key

  534. to faithful obedience

  535. in this life.

  536. Do you need the strength

  537. to endure a little suffering

  538. here and now?

  539. Remember,

  540. this life is short.

  541. Christ is coming soon.

  542. And do you need motivation

  543. to keep on running

  544. faithfully,

  545. to obey,

  546. to lay it all out

  547. and run the race

  548. that's set before you?

  549. Christian,

  550. remember,

  551. this life is short.

  552. Christ is coming soon.

  553. Only one life

  554. will soon be passed.

  555. Only what's done

  556. for Christ will last.

  557. Church,

  558. the good news of the gospel

  559. is that Jesus Christ

  560. has conquered the grave

  561. to give us hope

  562. beyond our suffering.

  563. And so,

  564. it's because of this

  565. that we respond

  566. third,

  567. like David,

  568. third strategy here,

  569. by hoping in God.

  570. This is the third strategy

  571. he gives us

  572. for life in a fallen world.

  573. He says,

  574. hope in God.

  575. David says in verse 7,

  576. And now, O Lord,

  577. for what do I wait?

  578. My hope is in you.

  579. My hope is in you.

  580. And so he prays.

  581. He prays,

  582. deliver me from

  583. all my transgressions.

  584. Now,

  585. notice how he starts there.

  586. Notice how he starts there.

  587. Yes,

  588. there are external enemies.

  589. There always are.

  590. But David realizes

  591. he is a sinner

  592. in need of deliverance.

  593. Yes,

  594. there are wicked men

  595. around him.

  596. But David recognizes

  597. the first enemy

  598. he's got to deal with

  599. is his own sin.

  600. He has fallen short

  601. of the glory of God.

  602. He needs deliverance

  603. from his own sin.

  604. And Christian,

  605. I ask you,

  606. when is the last time

  607. you called out to God

  608. for deliverance

  609. from your sin?

  610. Nonbeliever,

  611. that may be the first time

  612. you call out to God

  613. for deliverance

  614. from your sin.

  615. Do you groan

  616. as you wait

  617. for the redemption

  618. of your bodies?

  619. Do you long

  620. to be freed

  621. from this body

  622. of death

  623. with all its

  624. sin-twisted desires

  625. and thoughts

  626. that come streaming

  627. out of your mouth?

  628. Do you long

  629. to be freed

  630. from a time

  631. when you have

  632. to muzzle your mouth

  633. so you don't have

  634. to pour out wickedness?

  635. Call out to him,

  636. God,

  637. would you deliver

  638. me from evil?

  639. David prays,

  640. do not make me

  641. the scorn

  642. of the fool.

  643. God,

  644. keep me

  645. from being the fool.

  646. God,

  647. keep me

  648. from the foolishness

  649. of other wicked men.

  650. Keep me

  651. from earning scorn

  652. from others

  653. and thereby leading

  654. them to scorn you.

  655. Church,

  656. do you pray,

  657. Lord,

  658. keep me

  659. from temptation?

  660. Keep me

  661. from wandering

  662. into foolishness,

  663. not for my sake,

  664. but for your sake,

  665. God,

  666. not for my reputation,

  667. but for your reputation,

  668. not for my glory,

  669. but for your glory,

  670. for the praise

  671. of your name.

  672. He prays,

  673. God,

  674. would you remove

  675. your hand of discipline

  676. from me?

  677. He gives another reason

  678. for his silence

  679. there in verse 9.

  680. You see it?

  681. He says,

  682. I am mute.

  683. I do not open

  684. my mouth,

  685. for it is you

  686. who have done it.

  687. He sees this

  688. suffering

  689. and this affliction

  690. ultimately

  691. as the discipline

  692. of God.

  693. And so he prays,

  694. God,

  695. would you remove

  696. your hand of discipline

  697. from me?

  698. Remove your stroke

  699. from me.

  700. I am spent

  701. by the hostility

  702. of your hand.

  703. When you discipline

  704. a man with rebukes

  705. for sin,

  706. he says,

  707. you can assume

  708. like a moth

  709. what is dear to him.

  710. Surely all mankind

  711. is a mere breath.

  712. When God's children

  713. find themselves

  714. running after

  715. false gods

  716. and setting their hearts

  717. on the joys

  718. of this life

  719. ultimately

  720. and not on the Lord

  721. ultimately,

  722. guess what God

  723. is kind enough to do?

  724. He is kind enough

  725. to take it away.

  726. David says,

  727. God has consumed

  728. like a moth

  729. what is dear to him.

  730. This is the severe,

  731. merciful,

  732. hard,

  733. but loving discipline

  734. of our God.

  735. He does this

  736. not to us

  737. to afflict us

  738. but for us

  739. to train us

  740. to train our hearts

  741. to love him

  742. and to delight ourselves

  743. into him

  744. and not the cotton candy

  745. pleasures of this life.

  746. We should ask,

  747. friend,

  748. is there anything

  749. in your life

  750. that your heart

  751. is so consumed with

  752. that if God

  753. were to

  754. eat it up

  755. like a moth

  756. you would just

  757. be completely undone?

  758. Ask it another way.

  759. Is there anything

  760. that without it

  761. life would not

  762. be worth living?

  763. If you can find

  764. an answer

  765. to those questions

  766. that's not rooted

  767. in the Lord,

  768. you may have just

  769. identified an idol

  770. in your heart

  771. and it's wise

  772. for you to pray

  773. with David,

  774. God,

  775. would you deliver me

  776. from my own sin

  777. and then remove

  778. your hand of discipline

  779. from me

  780. that I might delight

  781. in you

  782. and then rightly

  783. enjoy your good gifts?

  784. Augustine,

  785. he says,

  786. our heart is restless

  787. until it finds

  788. its rest in thee.

  789. David prays

  790. for relief

  791. but look at this.

  792. David also prays

  793. for joy.

  794. Look at verse 12.

  795. He says,

  796. hear my prayer,

  797. O Lord,

  798. and give ear

  799. to my cry.

  800. Hold not your peace

  801. at my tears

  802. for I am a sojourner

  803. with you.

  804. I am a guest

  805. like all my fathers.

  806. Look away from me

  807. that I may smile again

  808. before I depart

  809. and am no more.

  810. In other words,

  811. he says,

  812. I don't belong here.

  813. I'm a sojourner.

  814. I'm a citizen

  815. of the kingdom of God.

  816. I'm not like

  817. these wicked men

  818. whose entire life

  819. and whose entire identity

  820. is right here,

  821. whose entire treasure

  822. is here

  823. and things that rust

  824. and fade.

  825. I am headed

  826. for the kingdom

  827. but even so,

  828. God,

  829. would you relieve me

  830. of this hand

  831. of discipline

  832. so that I can have

  833. some joy

  834. here and now

  835. before I die?

  836. It's not a bad thing

  837. to pray like that,

  838. church.

  839. It is true,

  840. yes,

  841. we will suffer.

  842. It's also true

  843. there is much joy

  844. to be had

  845. here and now.

  846. It's true

  847. that our treasure

  848. is in heaven

  849. but it's also true,

  850. guess what,

  851. we can enjoy

  852. in right perspective,

  853. we can enjoy

  854. God's gifts to us

  855. here and now.

  856. It's true,

  857. yes,

  858. this world

  859. is quickly passing,

  860. this life

  861. will soon be passed

  862. but it is also true

  863. that when we have

  864. this eternal perspective

  865. and when our hope

  866. is in him,

  867. we of all people

  868. ought to be marked

  869. by unshakable joy

  870. in this life.

  871. That sort of hope,

  872. church,

  873. that sort of joy,

  874. that is compelling.

  875. How do we explain

  876. a joy

  877. and a satisfaction

  878. that is not anchored

  879. to our circumstances

  880. in life?

  881. How can we explain

  882. a heart satisfaction

  883. that doesn't get rattled

  884. when things get rough

  885. in your life?

  886. That demands

  887. an explanation

  888. and when the non-believing world

  889. sees that in you,

  890. you have the opportunity

  891. to say,

  892. I have this joy

  893. because I have set

  894. my hope in Jesus

  895. because it is only

  896. in Jesus

  897. that this prayer

  898. of verses 7 through 13

  899. can be prayed

  900. with confidence.

  901. It is Jesus

  902. who,

  903. like David,

  904. silenced his mouth

  905. in the presence

  906. of the wicked,

  907. who,

  908. like a lamb

  909. before its shearers

  910. was silent,

  911. so he opened

  912. not his mouth,

  913. who did not take vengeance

  914. into his own hands

  915. but entrusted himself

  916. completely to the Lord,

  917. not looking at

  918. the temporary relief

  919. from his suffering

  920. but at the eternal

  921. weight of glory

  922. that lay beyond.

  923. It is Jesus

  924. who knew all too well

  925. the shortness

  926. and the frailty

  927. of this life

  928. whose earthly life

  929. was cut short

  930. at age 33.

  931. You know,

  932. we would call that

  933. a tragically short life,

  934. wouldn't we?

  935. Just a breath

  936. but it was no tragic accident.

  937. This was the eternal plan

  938. of God

  939. to redeem us

  940. from the vanity of life

  941. and the struggle

  942. of a life

  943. in a fallen world.

  944. Friend,

  945. if you want to be lifted

  946. out of despair,

  947. out of the hopelessness

  948. and the struggle

  949. of living in a fallen world,

  950. the only hope

  951. is to look

  952. to Jesus

  953. and to call out

  954. to him

  955. and to trust

  956. in him

  957. and to delight

  958. yourself in him

  959. and to look forward

  960. to the day

  961. when he will come

  962. again to transform

  963. this world

  964. and usher in

  965. the age to come.

  966. He says,

  967. behold,

  968. I am making

  969. all things new.

  970. In that day

  971. he will not ignore

  972. our tears.

  973. He will wipe away

  974. every one of them

  975. from our eyes.

  976. Friend,

  977. that day

  978. is coming soon.

  979. That day

  980. is coming soon.

  981. And then we will see

  982. just how light

  983. and momentary

  984. this present affliction is.

  985. How worth it

  986. faithfully suffering

  987. for his glory was.

  988. I referenced the poem

  989. from C.T. Studd

  990. and I think it's worth

  991. hearing in full

  992. as we close.

  993. He writes,

  994. two little lines

  995. I heard one day

  996. traveling along

  997. life's busy way.

  998. bringing conviction

  999. to my heart

  1000. and from my mind

  1001. would not depart.

  1002. Only one life

  1003. will soon be passed.

  1004. Only what's done

  1005. for Christ will last.

  1006. Only one life,

  1007. yes,

  1008. only one.

  1009. Soon will its fleeting

  1010. hours be done.

  1011. Then in that day

  1012. my Lord to meet

  1013. and stand

  1014. before his judgment seat.

  1015. Only one life

  1016. will soon be passed.

  1017. Only what's done

  1018. for Christ will last.

  1019. Only one life

  1020. the still small voice

  1021. gently pleads

  1022. for a better choice.

  1023. Bidding me selfish aims

  1024. to leave

  1025. and to God's

  1026. holy will

  1027. to cleave.

  1028. Only one life

  1029. will soon be passed.

  1030. Only what's done

  1031. for Christ

  1032. will last.

  1033. Only one life

  1034. a few brief years.

  1035. Each with its burdens,

  1036. hopes,

  1037. and fears.

  1038. Each with its clays

  1039. I must fulfill

  1040. living for self

  1041. or in his will.

  1042. Only one life

  1043. will soon be passed.

  1044. Only what's done

  1045. for Christ

  1046. will last.

  1047. When this bright world

  1048. would tempt me sore,

  1049. when Satan would

  1050. a victory score,

  1051. when self would

1052. seek to have its way,

  1053. then help me,

  1054. Lord,

  1055. with joy to say,

  1056. Only one life

  1057. will soon be passed.

  1058. Only what's done

  1059. for Christ

  1060. will last.

  1061. Give me,

  1062. Father,

  1063. a purpose deep.

  1064. In joy or sorrow

  1065. thy word to keep,

  1066. faithful and true

  1067. whatever the strife,

  1068. pleasing thee

  1069. in my daily life,

  1070. only one life

  1071. will soon be passed.

  1072. Only what's done

  1073. for Christ

  1074. will last.

  1075. Oh,

  1076. let my love

  1077. with fervor burn

  1078. and from the world

  1079. now let me turn,

  1080. living for thee

  1081. and thee alone,

  1082. bringing thee pleasure

  1083. on thy throne.

  1084. Only one life

  1085. will soon be passed.

  1086. Only what's done

  1087. for Christ

  1088. will last.

  1089. Only one life,

  1090. yes,

  1091. only one.

  1092. Now let me say

  1093. thy will be done.

  1094. And when at last

  1095. I'll hear the call,

  1096. I know I'll say

1097. it was worth it all.

  1098. Only one life

  1099. will soon be passed.

  1100. Only what's done

  1101. for Christ

  1102. will last.

  1103. Father,

  1104. we pray,

  1105. would we live

  1106. this life

  1107. in view

  1108. of eternity?

  1109. Would we recognize

  1110. the shortness

  1111. of our days?

  1112. Would you teach us

  1113. to measure our days

  1114. that we may gain

  1115. a heart of wisdom?

  1116. Lord,

  1117. would you show us,

  1118. Father,

  1119. that there is only

  1120. one life

  1121. and it will soon

  1122. be passed.

  1123. Would you motivate us

  1124. and strengthen us

  1125. by your spirit

  1126. to live for ways

  1127. that will last

  1128. into eternity?

1129. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  1130. Amen.

  1131. Amen.
